This year marks a special anniversary for Saint Joseph Academy, as we commemorate 120 years since the founding of our great school! Yes, 120 years of excellence in the education of women. Twelve decades. Six score. However you count it, this is a milestone worth celebrating!

The Sisters of the Congregation of St. Joseph have been supporting the education of women for over three centuries. Since the founding of the Congregation in 1650 in Le Puy, France, the Sisters have improved opportunities for women. In those early years, the Sisters taught the women of that war-ravaged region lace making, so they could learn a trade to support themselves and their children.

When the United States was still a relatively new nation, the Sisters of St. Joseph left France in 1836 at the invitation of the bishop in St. Louis. The Sisters again began by teaching, including Native American children who had become deaf after suffering from the measles. Wherever the Lord called these women of faith, they responded. The Sisters traveled up the Mississippi River and eventually spread across the United States.

The Sisters first arrived in Northeast Ohio in 1872 near Painesville. It wasn’t long after that date when they settled in Cleveland. The doors of Saint Joseph Academy were first opened in the year 1890. Thousands of women have benefited from the education provided by the Sisters of the Congregation of St. Joseph and the laywomen and men who have worked alongside them over the past 120 years.

At the very heart of the education provided at Saint Joseph Academy has been the faith formation of its students. The curriculum has certainly changed over the years, but growing and maturing in one’s personal relationship with Christ Jesus has remained steadfast. Women have been educated not for the sake of knowledge alone, but so that these women could in turn make their families, their communities, the Church and the world a more just place. As we say in our mission statement, a Saint Joseph Academy education “…inspires compassionate leadership and service in our global society.”

Some may take for granted the education of women, living as we do in the 21st century United States. Not us. We learned first hand about girls and women being denied educational opportunities in areas of Pakistan and Afghanistan when best selling author Greg Mortenson visited Saint Joseph Academy at the start of this school year. Our students were eager to help build a school, raising thousands of dollars to help support the education of girls and women in those regions.

People familiar with the graduates of Saint Joseph Academy know the truth of the proverb that says, “when you educate a girl, you educate a community,” because women are always sharing their education with others. That’s what the women of Saint Joseph Academy have done for the past 120 years. We look forward to continuing this important work for another 120 years!

Professional Learning Communities in Action at SJA By: Audrey C. Menard, Principal One strategy that schools can use to realize high levels of student learning is called the Professional Learning Community (PLC). There is abundant research that supports the efficacy of this work.

While the skills of the individual teacher matter with regard to student learning, a school’s focus on individual teacher growth does not ensure organizational growth. A mistake many schools make is to limit their focus on individual professional development.

Effective leaders focus on developing the culture and the collective capacity of the organization. Student achievement gains and other benefits are influenced by organizational characteristics beyond the skills of individual staff. Wide ranging research shows a welldesigned system filled with ordinary people can achieve stunning performance levels. Saint Joseph Academy began developing PLCs this school year to enable the building of the collective capacity of collaborative teams of teachers.

What is a PLC exactly? Richard DuFour and Robert Eaker first defined the ethos of a PLC in the following way: “Educators are committed to working collaboratively in ongoing processes of collective inquiry and action research in order to achieve better results for the students they serve. To this end, the educators of the school create shared mission, vision, values and goals. They work in collaborative teams focused on learning. They collectively inquire about best practice and current reality. They are action oriented and experiment. They are committed to continuous improvement. They are results oriented.”

There are three big ideas for a PLC. First, learning is accepted as the fundamental purpose of the school and so all educational practices must be examined in light of their impact on learning. When teachers meet, they keep at the forefront four critical questions. What is it we expect our students to learn? How will we know when they have learned it? How will we respond when they don’t learn? How will we respond when they already know it? The result is a shift of focus from teachers and teaching to students and learning.

The second big idea involves the essential nature of the

collaborative culture. There exists a commitment to working together to achieve a collective purpose and work is done collaboratively in teams. In a ten year study by McLaughlin and Talbert, they found that whenever they identified an effective school or an effective department within a school, without exception the school or department had been a part of a collaborative professional learning community. When teachers collaborate, schools see gains in student achievement, higher quality solutions to problems, increased confidence among all staff, teachers supporting one another’s strengths and accommodating weaknesses, an ability to test new ideas, more support for new teachers, and an expanded pool of ideas, materials, and methods.

Finally, assessment is the norm and it is used to determine school effectiveness on the basis of results rather than intentions.

Results-driven education judges success not by the courses students take or grades they receive, but by what they actually know and can do as a result of their time in school. Teachers focus on results in two ways. First, they look at data to identify students who need more time and support for learning. Second, teachers identify strategies to improve upon both their individual and collective ability to teach specific essential skills and concepts. In teams, teachers use data to establish goals. They monitor their progress and modify goals accordingly.

At SJA, we have seen some amazing work already come out of this PLC strategy. This edition of UPDATE features the results of projects designed and implemented by teams of teachers. The teachers have collaborated both within their departments and across department boundaries. Students are engaged in learning at a higher level. They are making connections rather than merely memorizing concepts. The teachers are energized and capacity building. There is a wonderful buzz about the building.

Collaborative Project Creates a Buzz on Colony Collapse Disorder Have you noticed that there are fewer bees flying around? Over the past few years, farmers, bee keepers and scientists have seen an alarming decline in honey bee colonies and are working to discover the cause.

Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD) could have overwhelming results for the human population who rely heavily on our buzzing friends to pollinate.

SJA students participated in an exciting collaborative project combining Ms. DiCello’s and Ms. Terise Janca’s ’93 Art classes, Ms. Nora Kelly’s ’01 Environmental Processes class and Mrs. Kalnay’s Digital Photography class. The project began with the school book selection, The Secret Life of Bees

by Sue Monk Kidd, and culminated in an art installation in the Academy Center. “The main objective of the collaboration was for students to understand the severity of CCD through the medium of art” according to Ms. DiCello. Students were responsible for creating a three dimensional bee out of clay, studying the phenomenon of CCD and reporting on how society can help in the effort to save the bees.

Julie Wheeler ’10 said, “I never realized how much we really depend on bees. They pollinate one-third of our food and without them, we would lose important products that we use in our daily lives.”

Students agreed that the hardest part of the project was having patience to create a realistic bee with wings and legs using clay. Hannah Flanagan ’10 said, “We really enjoyed working together on our bees and helping each other out.” Over 100 ceramic bees in various stages of colony collapse, along with photographs and research information provided by the students of the Environmental Processes and Digital Photography classes, were hung inside the Academy Center.

Ms. DiCello, chairperson of the art department said, “It’s awesome to collaborate with students and teachers who are ambitious and curious about creating artwork to discover something new.” Grainne Mangan ’10 commented, “I thoroughly enjoyed creating my bee and learning about CCD. I really hope that this project raises awareness about Colony Collapse Disorder.”

Students Win Awards for Art Congratulations to six art students who have won awards for their artistic talents. Three students were recognized by the Cleveland Institute of Art for their outstanding, creative talents. Under the direction of art teacher Ms. DiCello, junior Kaylie Simpson ’11 and freshmen Katie Dorow ’13 won Gold Key awards and junior Deirdre Heffernan ’11 won a Silver Key award. Ms. DiCello said, “I am really impressed with how our students constantly explore techniques and push the boundaries of creative thinking. Katie Dorow’s self-portrait was titled “Contemplation,” Deirdre Heffernan’s print was titled “Color Field,” and Kaylie Simpson’s wire sculpture titled “Catnap,” is a three-dimensional piece.”

In addition, three students received awards for their poster designs in a program sponsored by the Community West Foundation, Cleveland Clinic and Fairview Hospital. The purpose of the posters was to highlight a message about skin cancer and the hazards of tanning beds, which are very popular with young adults. Students receiving awards were Grainne Mangan ’10, Mikayla Liston ’13 and Brianna Dombo ’13.

Johanna Orozco Shares Her Story “Dating violence among teenagers has become an increasingly growing issue in our communities,” said Tim Boehnlein, Deputy Director of the Domestic Violence Center of Greater Cleveland, as he addressed the students of Saint Joseph Academy to amplify

the importance of this issue, Johanna Orozco shared her story. After being shot in the face by her boyfriend nearly three years ago, she removed every mirror in her house. She called herself a monster, was angry at God and “hated every man that walked the Earth.”

Today, she is a beautiful, smart, sweet young woman who is healing, accepting herself and inspiring young women to stop being victims.

Ms. Orozco and Mr. Boehnlein came to the Academy to share her story and educate young women about the dangers of dating and domestic violence. Students and faculty were captivated by how her once loving relationship turned abusive and violent.

Like many victims, Johanna became isolated from her family and friends as her abusive relationship escalated. Her case brought public attention to the severity of dating and domestic violence and how to build healthy relationships.

Dating violence is non-discriminatory,

crossing all ethnic, socio-economic groups and education levels. Ms. Orozcos’ story was inspirational and students learned the definition of abuse, what a healthy relationship should be like and what to do if they find themselves suffering from abuse.

Students had the opportunity to ask Ms. Orozco questions after she told her story.

Hands flew in the air trying to understand how she could move on from such tragedy.

But she has. She now spends her days educating young people about what not to do and how to help themselves if in an abusive relationship. Boehnlein said, “What an amazing young woman. Each time she speaks to a group of students, I know she makes a difference. I hear them ask questions and see them talking to each other so I know they are getting the message.”

In closing, Johanna said, “If my message helps one girl or boy, I am happy to have told my story. Don’t be a victim.”

SJA and St. Ed’s Students Lead Robotics Competition A collaborative team of twelve Saint Joseph Academy students and twelve St. Edward High School students came together to share, teach and have fun with engineering.

Sixth grade students from Incarnate Word Academy and St. Christopher elementary school came to Saint Joseph Academy to take part in the 1st annual Lego Robotics competition. St. Edward teachers Ms. Mary Ellen Scott ’76 and Mr. Matt Falk and SJA teacher Mr. Dave Weiss worked with teams of students from both schools to use Legos building blocks to develop computer operated robots that could play soccer, and to promote technology and engineering.

First, the teams of 6th graders built a robot with a pre-determined number of Legos and decorated it. They then added motion and sound using their programming knowledge and their lap top computers.

Once robots were completed, they competed in a

“robot soccer game” on fields in the Academy Center. The engineering students from Saint Joseph Academy and St. Edward High School assisted the teams in their efforts. Teams played to win! Mr. Weiss commented, “I see lots of smiles and hear lots of cheering so that means they’re having fun while learning.” He continued, “This is the first year we’ve tried to collaborate with another school on an event like this. It was interesting to see the boys and girls from SJA and St. Ed’s work together. They had very different ideas and really came up with a great program for the grade school students.”

competition. Ms. Scott, who mentors robotics students, said, “The team of St. Ed’s and SJA did a great job executing the competition. Events like this allow us to foster a student’s interest in engineering.”

Abby Kayser ’11 said, “The kids were so great and it was fun for us to share in their success and see them learn about engineering and technology.”

London & France I magine, visiting the Eiffel Tower, Big Ben, Parliament, the Louvre – what a wonderful way for a group of SJA students to spend ten days! With a packed itinerary, 26 young ladies were able to experience the sights and sounds of London and France on a whirlwind tour. Little sleep and buckets of rain at times didn’t stop them from seeing the beautiful sites and experiencing the history and rich culture of Europe. Some stopping points included: Buckingham Palace, Piccadilly Circus, Arc de Triomphe, the beaches of Normandy, a speedy ride in the Chunnel to Paris on the Eurostar Train and a river cruise on the Seine.

“It was an amazing trip,” commented senior Terri Slivka. “We saw so much in a really short period of time. It was enlightening to see first hand so many of the things that we’ve studied in school, especially the military cemetery at Normandy. I will never forget it.” Chaperone and SJA teacher Ms. Molly Krist said, “It is really nice to see these young girls soak in all of the history and architecture. Their expressions were priceless.”

Crepes, bangers and mash (sausage and mashed potatoes) and traditional fish and chips were some of the favorites among London eateries and quaint, French brasseries. Touring London and France was an experience of a lifetime. Magnifique!

Academy Signs Sister School Agreement with Chinese School Saint Joseph Academy recently hosted nine teachers from in Qingdao Number Two Middle School in Qingdao, China. This was the second time that teachers from this school visited SJA. The teachers came to the Academy to observe teaching methods in a variety of disciplines. “With our sister school agreement, our hope is to exchange ideas on teacher training, collaborate on language teaching methods and to establish exchange programs for students and teachers between Saint Joseph Academy and Qingdao Number Two Middle School. This agreement will allow us to collaborate on a wide range of learning initiatives and make our program one of the best in the area,” said Principal Audrey Menard.

Qingdao Number Two Middle School is the Chinese equivalent to a U.S. High School serving 16-19 year old students. The school has about 3,000 students and there are 55 students per class. Students attend classes six days a week with a class day of around 10 hours, which includes time for

study and athletics.

This year, the teachers met with faculty member Mrs. Xuan Liu, and visited her Honors Chinese 3 and Honors Chinese 4 classes. Mrs. Liu grew up in Nanjing, China and received her undergraduate degree at Xiao Zhuang Normal University in Nanjing. She recently graduated with her Master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction Design from Cleveland State University.

The nine faculty members who attended the forum teach English, Chinese, politics, history and physics. The delegation is led by Mr. Dai Gongjin who teaches English and is the Director of the English Department at the school.

During their visit, the Chinese teachers also met with many of the students and answered a number of their questions. Mr. Gongjin responded, “This is what we are trying to achieve in schools in China, more conversation and questions between teachers and students.

The SJA basketball teams wrapped up another season. Under the coaching direction of Interim Coach Marianne Mangan, the Varsity team finished with an 11-10 record. Highlighting the season was a near upset of Midpark in the Sectional Final game and an overtime win against state-ranked Strongsville. This very tenacious team was lead by Most Valuable Player and four year letter winner Maggie Berry, who received a scholarship to play at Walsh University in Canton joining her sister, Katie Berry ’08. Maggie and Genna

Capasso ’10 were also named to the Greater Cleveland Basketball All Star Team. Genna and fellow senior Ashley Serrano received CoCoaches’ Awards and the Defensive Award went to Grainne Mangan ’10. Coach Mangan commented, “Beyond pure talent, this team was dedicated and put their heart into every game. Win or lose, these girls played with spirit.”

Sophomore Emma Tilow was the team’s Most Improved Player while junior Alex Austin received the Best Rebounder Award. Alex also was named Cleveland Plain Dealer Player of the Week. Special mention went to senior Hannah Flanagan who received the Saint Joseph medal for team spirit. Other strong seniors were Maureen Bole, Mary Jo Reddy, Gabriella Kreuz, and Julie DeLong. The team was also balanced by the strong presence of juniors Farrell O’Malley, Megan Seaman and Mackenzie Dunn, and sophomores Rachel Schwind and Celine Mangan. Junior Nikki Carpenter cheered on her teammates as she was sidelined with shoulder surgery. Special mention also goes to junior Mackenzie Dunn for receiving the junior varsity Leadership Award after battling back from an ACL injury last year.

Junior Varsity Coach Dave Clarke finished the season with an 18-1 record and Freshmen Coach Bill Strong ended with a 17-3 record.

Thank you to all the coaches who worked hard throughout the season to take the Jaguars to victory.

Swimming & Diving: The swimming and diving program at Saint Joseph Academy made quite a splash this year. Swimmers improved tremendously breaking seven school records! The team earned a second place finish at the Perry Invitational and a 4th place finish at the North Olmsted Eagle Open. Four year letter winners Ashley Horton ’10 and Angela Neff ’10 demonstrated strong leadership skills and continuously encouraged the team. Swimming Coach Stephanie Markeley said, “It’s nice to see the team pull together and cheer each other on.

Their continued dedication in the off-season will set them up for a successful 2011 season.”

Juniors India Munday and Jessica Walsh-Frazier and sophomores Grace Harter and Emma Ryan set a school record in the 200 Medley Relay that finished 5th at the Northeast Ohio Sectional Meet. Munday, Ryan, Walsh-Frazier and sophomore Laura Kalynchuk also set new school records in the 200 and 400 Freestyle Relays. The team finished off the year with 17 personal best times at the sectional meet and had one district qualifier, Emma Ryan. Emma finished 10th in backstroke with a school record time of 102.34 and 15th in butterfly with a school record of 100.58 at Northeast Ohio District meet. At the awards ceremony, sophomore Nadia Swit earned the “Most Improved” by dropping nearly 8 seconds in her 50 free. India Munday earned the “Coaches Award”

aint Joseph Academy continues the spirit of the Sisters of the Congregation of St. Joseph in many ways; through the ministry of prayer and presence, daily prayer, Mass and sacraments throughout the school year and through a number of faculty and staff members who are lay Associates of the Congregation.

“The Associate movement within the sisters of Saint Joseph has roots in the early days of the Congregation when lay people worked along with the Sisters in what were called the Confraternities of Mercy,” according to Carol O’Reilly Hughes ’53 Co-Director of the Associate program in Cleveland. After Vatican II , with its emphasis on the role of the Laity in the Church and the mandate to religious orders to “study their roots” many orders, including the Sisters of St. Joseph, began to look at the possibility of lay associates. They saw it as a way to share their lives and mission with Christians not called to a vowed life.

The program was proposed and initiated here in Cleveland between 1976 and 1978. The call of the Associate is to live the CSJ charism of unifying love within the parameters of their life in the world.

They are nurses, teachers, shop workers, parents, and lawyers. Some volunteer in CSJ ministries, others are employed at centers and by ministries. There are at present 500-plus Associates in the Congregation, 85 of whom are in Cleveland and 12 who work at Saint Joseph Academy.

At Saint Joseph Academy, the Associates are teachers, administrators and staff members.

“I believe that it is important to have the presence of the charism of the Congregation in Saint Joseph Academy. The Associates bring this charism. We try to bring the spirit of the Congregation and the Gospel values to the workplace,” remarked Grace Gutoskey Ogonek ’80, a theology teacher and Associate.

Carol Hughes said, “It is important to have a continued presence of the Congregation among the students. Long gone are the days with Sisters in every classroom. While the Sisters are involved at SJA with their ministry of Prayer and Presence, the daily interaction with Associates working at SJA, whether from a teacher or staff member, is a constant connection with the Congregation and a blessing for both the students and the Associates.”

The Walk of

the Roses 2010

Most every Saint Joseph Academy graduate remembers the excitement of her graduation day and especially carrying her bouquet of red roses. This tradition will continue for the Class of 2010, as family, friends, alumnae, and SJA neighbors line Rocky River Drive to cheer for these young women on their big day.

In addition, we will also honor the Class of 1950 on the occasion of their 60th anniversary year of their graduation. These alumnae have been invited to “Ride With the Roses” in “Lolly the Trolley.” They did not have a chance to walk for their graduation because they graduated from St. John’s Cathedral in 1950.

Having Faith in the Future Some people call it giving back and some refer to it as paying forward.

Whatever you call it, Barbara Kahoun ’53 wants to be certain that, upon her death, her alma mater, will be remembered in her will.

Barbara grew up in Lakewood and was registered to enter Saint Therese Academy when the school closed its doors in June of 1949. Her dilemma was resolved after meeting with Sr. Saint Ann, CSJ and enrolling at Saint Joseph Academy, a decision she never regretted. The business curriculum which she chose served her well.

As an only child, Barbara’s parents encouraged her to attend Ursuline College but she and eight other members of her class were recruited by the Federal Reserve Bank. The desire to apply the skills that she had learned led Barbara to accept the position immediately upon graduation. She moved up the ranks and became the personal secretary to president of the Federal Reserve Bank, Karen Horn. When Ms. Horn became the chairman and CEO at Bank One, Barbara joined her there. She remained working at Bank One until her father’s illness necessitated her early retirement.

Barbara has always been involved. Being active at the school, she has been impressed with the continued accomplishments of the teachers and challenging programs offered to today’s students like the many technology courses. Barbara is equally thrilled by the enthusiastic participation of the students in the varied extra-curricular activities offered at the school. The planned gift Barbara has made to the Academy through her will assures continued educational opportunities for more young women into the future.

Twelve seniors complete four years as Assertiveness Trainers

Students Shine on Stage

Students shined in the spotlight as they won numerous acting awards at local competitions. At the prestigious city-wide English Speaking Union Regional Shakespeare Competition, Saint Joseph Academy representative junior Tricia O’Toole came in first runner-up! In the contest students were judged on acting, oratory and memory skills as they recited Shakespeare scenes and sonnets.

Tony Brown, the Cleveland Plain Dealer theater critic and one of the finalist judges, told Tricia that she gave an incredible performance.

Over the last four years, twelve very dedicated seniors; Becca Armbruster, Amanda Drapac-Novotny, Maddie Gonnella, Ashley Horton, Julie Jensen, Kara Kuykendall, Holly Lovey, Maureen Martin, Rachele Morino, Kathe Pocker, Samantha Schulte, and Ellen Wallenhorst have quietly made their mark in a very big way at a number of diocesan elementary schools.

Through role-playing and interactive discussion with the audience, the Assertiveness Training Team has helped nearly 1,500 fifth grade students learn the difference between assertive, aggressive and passive behavior. The program focuses on developing skills including positive decision-making, how to react to others who encourage poor choices, and speaking

in an assertive manner. The program also addresses bullying, labeling, stereotyping, and other negative behaviors that lead to an increase in the incidents of violence in both school and community. The response of the young students has always been positive as they enjoy interacting with our students and report that the skills learned have been extremely helpful.

As trainers, the Saint Joseph Academy students have presented the program at schools including Our Lady of Angels, St. Ambrose, St. Raphael, St. Joseph in Avon Lake and Lakewood Catholic Academy, to name a few.

They also trained a new group of SJA students to take over the reins next year.

Tricia O’Toole Tricia’s coaches, Mrs. Mel Kupchik and Mrs. Ruth Rowe Holden ’99 worked with her since September and can vouch for her incredible hard work and talent. “We are so immensely proud of her that we could burst!” said Mrs. Kupchik.

Additionally, students won numerous awards at the 2010 Cleveland Theatre Conference One Act Festival. The following students were recognized for their performances: Gold Medals were awarded to Emily Terry ’11 and Kay Rommel ’11. Samantha Kaleal ’11 and Alexa Jones ’11 received Silver Medals. Alexa also received awards for Readers Theater, Monologue and a Beck Center Recognition. Melissa Kaleal ’11 was awarded the Bronze medal and Julie Gill ’10 received recognition for her monologue and recognition from the Great Lakes Theater. The students were under the direction of parent Mrs. Maryann Nagel.

Samantha Schulte ’10 Wins An Entrepreneurship Scholarship from Ohio Northern University

SJA Reaches Out to Support Edna House

In February, Samantha Schulte ‘10 competed is thrilled for her achievement. This was a great effort while balancing her school work in the CEO (Collegiate Entrepreneurship and the obvious demands of this program.”

Organization) Inaugural High School Congratulations, Sam! Competition. Ohio Northern University established a new entrepreneurship scholarship competition for high school students titled, “Create Ideas that Change Our World.” Students entered to win scholarships to Ohio Northern by proposing innovative solutions that improve society, improve human health care, utilize technology to improve lives, or create new businesses and jobs.

Sam presented her project of “RFID and your Health” surrounding a program of Wii Get Fit. Her project was an effort to work with 5th grade students to teach healthy exercise habits using RFID technology to transport the Wii game data to a school computer for educational re-enforcement of the exercise habits.

At the end of the presentations, Sam was awarded a $2,000 renewable scholarship to Ohio Northern University. Associate Principal Barbara Kilker said, “Sam is a great young woman and everyone at the Academy

In the spirit of this school year’s theme to “reach out” to others, the students, faculty and staff showed their love for our “dear neighbor” and collected canned food and non-perishable food items for Edna House, a shelter that provides a safe, sober living environment for women. It helps support and educate them to live a life free from alcohol dependency.

A van filled with hundreds of food items was delivered to the women’s shelter.

The appeal to assist Edna House came from the Congregation of St. Joseph’s justice committee and the students at SJA responded full force in showing their love and commitment. Mrs. Maureen Fallon Adler ‘79 and Ms. Renee Brickman Kaster ’91 along with the

Saint Joseph Academy alumnae gathered together at the Academy Center on Saturday, February 13th for the annual Alumnae Basketball game. Eighteen former students ran the court as teams of odd and even graduation years. While it was competitive, the final score was 31-21. (Odds won...again!) Great fun was had by all!

members of SJA’s Catholic Students for Peace and Justice Group coordinated this collection and were thrilled with the results.

Sophomore Mallory Gleske said, “It was amazing to see how many people cared enough to bring in so much food.”

Edna House receives no government funding and relies upon private donations such as those from Saint Joseph Academy in order to provide for the over thirty women assisted at this shelter.

Alumnae Spotlight:

2010 Distinguished Alumnae

This year, 2010, is the twenty-year anniversary of the first Alumnae Hall of Fame held in 1990. Also this year we are announcing the new SJA Athletic Hall of Fame which will have its first induction in 2011. To eliminate any confusion, this event will now take on the name Distinguished Alumnae Awards. Cremonies for both groups will take place in alternating years.We are proud of the five women who have been selected to be honored with Distinguished Alumnae Awards for 2010.

Sister Jeanne Knoerle ’45 Nearly 60 years after her first teaching job, Sister Jeanne Knoerle remains an educator.

Although officially retired, she volunteers at the White Violet Center for Eco-Justice, a ministry of the Sisters of Providence that teaches the importance of ecological sustainability. As part of her work there, Jeanne leads Our Green Valley Alliance for Sustainability. Comprised of local government, schools, hospitals and other groups, the organization’s mission is to draw attention to caring for the environment.

Jeanne’s early dedication to education began at Saint Joseph Academy and continued after graduating in 1949 with a bachelor’s degree in drama and journalism from Terre Haute, Ind.-based St. Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMW), the country’s oldest Catholic liberal arts college for women. Shortly afterwards, she entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Providence at St. Mary-of-the-Woods.

Jeanne’s love for academia is evident personally and

professionally. She went on to earn two master’s degrees and a doctorate. She has spent her entire working life either teaching or in administration, including varied roles at SMW, such as chairing the journalism department and dually serving as an associate professor of Asian studies and as assistant to the president.

In 1968, Jeanne assumed the presidency of SMW, a post she held for 15 years. One of her most significant contributions was instituting the Women’s External Degree program, a long-distance learning curriculum that continues as one of the college’s most successful programs.

After retiring, Jeanne spent ten years at The Lilly Endowment in Indianapolis, overseeing millions of dollars in grants to colleges, theological schools, dioceses and social service agencies.

Although she moved away from Cleveland long ago, many happy memories, especially of SJA, still reside here. “I’m very moved,” she says of her Distinguished Alumna Award. “I have had many nice things in my life, and I count this as one of the nicest.”

Katherine (Kay) Lockwood Allen, Esq. ’51 Kay Allen believes that to those who have been given much, much is expected in return – that talents were meant to be shared. And she’s lived her life accordingly.

Along with Joseph, her husband of 54 years, Kay raised seven children. As a mother, she demonstrated by example the importance of giving and serving, teaching and learning. She’s proud that all of her children and grandchildren are involved in some type of volunteer service activity.

Kay started out as a teacher, graduating from Ursuline College in 1955 with a bachelor’s degree in education. Once her youngest child started school, she went on to obtain a master’s degree in information technology from Case Western Reserve University.

Later she attended Cleveland Marshall School of Law at Cleveland State University and became a practicing attorney in Ohio in 1995.

For the last 12 years, Kay has put her legal background to use by serving as a Guardian Ad Litem for abused, neglected and 14

abandoned children in Broward County, Fla., where she and Joe moved in 1996. This pro bono work allows her to partner with the court system to guide decisions about children’s futures. She has found it rewarding to see the positive difference that she makes in their lives.

Kay counts her years at SJA among her happiest memories. She classifies her teachers as superb role models who provided a solid academic education. Her high school experience instilled in her the sense of obligation to always perform her best, and to see the kinship of Christ in one’s neighbor.

“To receive this award is indeed an honor,” she says. “I am still in a state of shock, but I am truly humbled and gratified by this recognition.”

Cathy Lanning Knittel ’67 Cathy Knittel calls herself a “Joe’s girl” – and with good reason.

Cathy and SJA have been intertwined her entire life. Three generations of Cathy’s family have attended the school, and she has taught theology here for a collective 22 years.

Her longtime involvement with SJA underscores a deeply rooted commitment to Catholic education. She considers it part of the fiber of her being, guiding both her career and how she raised her children - Matthew, Peter and Mary Therese ’97 - with her husband of 37 years, Dr. Gregory Knittel, a faculty member at St. Ignatius High School for over three decades.

Cathy always wanted to be a high school teacher, and she credits the CSJs as being influential in that pursuit. She was also fortunate to have learned from many other “school people” over the years - those who really loved teaching and sacrificed a lot to do innovative work.

Her own devotion to teaching has been equally inspirational.

Cathy’s nomination describes her as a teacher who “motivates her students with the vision, desire and need to affect the world at large with the skills, knowledge and values they learned at SJA.” She is very active in Catholic Schools for Peace and Justice (CSPJ), an organization she helped found. The group is a joint effort among the area’s 22 diocesan Catholic high schools to work collaboratively on social justice initiatives.

In 1991 – prior to returning to full-time teaching – Cathy become SJA’s Alumnae Director. She helped to bring alumnae together to raise money for the construction of the Academy Center.

Cathy admits that whatever she’s involved in, she always thinks of how it will impact SJA. “People use the word ‘family,’ but that is what SJA means to me,” she says. “The place deserves to live in perpetuity because it always has and continues to do such good work,”- like developing outstanding individuals such as Cathy Knittel.

Maureen Brady Johnson ’69 Maureen Johnson can honestly say she found her life’s calling in high school. And she credits her teachers at SJA as profoundly influencing the person she ultimately became. “Going to St. Joe’s empowered me. I never thought I wasn’t capable of doing something just because I was a woman,” she recalls.

Maureen has wonderful memories of drama club and speech class, maintains friendships with classmates, and gained a lifelong muse in the form of Mrs. Mary Fournier Bill ’42, the school’s then-drama director, who inspired Maureen to pursue her passion for playwriting and directing.

Maureen graduated from Ursuline College in 1973 with a bachelor’s degree in drama, English and education and taught at Nazareth Academy before staying home to raise her family. She and her husband of 34 years, Mark, have four children: Erin, Allison, Juliet and Sean.

A part-time position directing musicals at Lake Ridge Academy in Elyria, Ohio turned into a 26-year career. Maureen retired from

the school in 2006 as its full-time theatre teacher.

One of her proudest professional achievements while at Lake Ridge was being invited with her students to perform at the Edinburgh International Fringe Festival in Scotland.

After that, she went on to teach writing and theatre at Lakewood Catholic Academy for two years, retiring in 2008. This past February, she received the Distinguished Educator Alumnae Award from Ursuline College.

Maureen calls receiving the Distinguished Alumnae Award one of the greatest honors she’s ever received: “St. Joe’s made me the person I am today, and I feel a great responsibility to live up to this award; to honor my parents, who sacrificed to give me this education; to pay tribute to my teachers, who challenged me spiritually to be the educator and writer I am today; and to thank my classmates for their abiding friendship that sustains me even to this day.”

Linda M. Quinn, Ph.D. ’79 “If not us, then who? If not now, when?

And if not for God, why?”

Those are the questions that have shaped Linda Quinn’s personal philosophy on service to others. Nurtured by her parents and reinforced by her years at SJA, volunteering is a way of life for her.

A gifted mathematician specializing in statistics, Linda is an assistant professor of mathematics at Cleveland State University as well as a self-employed statistician. She regularly donates her time and services to her alma mater, parish, children’s school, and the Cleveland diocese. She is very active in her professional organization, the American Statistical Association (ASA), having held numerous positions in the Cleveland chapter and at the national level, and chairing the ASA Statistics Poster Competition for grades K-12 since 1998. Her nomination notes that Linda spends many hours helping others because she has a talent which she shares easily.

Linda has a long-standing involvement with SJA’s math club

– giving presentations, supporting activities, and chaperoning out-of-town field trips. She’s even taught a few classes at SJA. “Being a visible role model for women in mathematics is important to me,” she says. Encouragement from her own math teachers at SJA – Mary Ann Fischer ’66, Margie Raub-Hunt and Don Kostell helped fuel her desire to continue in math. In fact, Linda went on to earn three master’s degrees and a doctorate in Urban Education with a specialization in Leadership and lifelong learning.

In recent years, Linda has dedicated efforts toward improving Catholic education, which she views as having three essential elements: excellence, dignity and connectedness.

It’s the basis for how she has taught and assessed students.

But those aspects of dignity and connectedness have also been particularly meaningful to Linda during one of her finest moments: adopting her two sons, Matt and Jacob, from Moscow in 2002.

“We became a forever family with all its challenges, victories and love. Now, it is my privilege to pass on my faith to my sons,” Linda says. Saint Joseph Academy UPDATE Spring 2010 15

Captain Colleen Gallagher-Thomas ’82 USN Leads Haitian Humanitarian Effort From the moment the Navy hospital ship USS Comfort arrived in Haiti on January 20, 2010, one-week following the massive earthquake that destroyed much of the area, Navy Captain Colleen Gallagher-Thomas ’82 a Nurse Practitioner knew this mission was different. Gallagher said, “It was unbelievable destruction, all the buildings in rubble, and the sadness on the people’s faces, their silent suffering.”

At the height of their efforts, the crew was treating one patient every six to nine minutes, with 10 operating rooms running nonstop.

By the time the ship sailed for home on March 10, 2010, the crew of the USS Comfort had treated 871 patients and delivered 9 babies.

After graduating from Saint Joseph Academy in 1982, Captain Gallagher-Thomas attended Villanova University where she received her nursing degree in 1986. She joined the Navy shortly after graduation. Captain GallagherThomas later earned an MA in Public Health from the University of Hawaii and an MA in Nursing from Georgetown University.

Captain Gallagher-Thomas currently lives in Annapolis, Maryland, with her husband Greg Thomas and has three children.

Upon her return to the United States she said that from her experience in Haiti, “I will try to impress on my children how thankful Americans should be for living in the land of plenty and to always remember how we can help others.”

Lasting Memories for two Members of the Class of 1934 It was a special day at Saint Joseph Academy as the school celebrated Lucille Ursem ’34 Day. Ms. Ursem is currently living at the Welsh Home and receiving care through Harbor Light Hospice. “When I received a call from hospice saying that Lucille’s wish was to come back to SJA we had to make it happen,” said Mary Ann Fischer ’66 Director of Alumnae. Lucille toured the school and enjoyed seeing many of the students. A special lunch with a former classmate Eileen McGorray Barrett ’34 was arranged and they were entertained by Cecilia’s Song, Saint Joseph Academy’s acclaimed a cappella choir.

“When the choir sang the Alma Mater, Mrs. Barrett reached over and they held hands and sang along,” said Mary Ann Fischer.

After graduating from Saint Joseph Academy, Ms. Ursem went on to study at the Spencerian School later known as Dyke College.

After working in business for many years, she began volunteering at St. John’s Hospital and continued to do so until her health declined.

Over the years she volunteered more than 14,000 hours.

“She has also supported Saint Joseph Academy for many years.

Whether it was attending reunions or other events, supporting the annual fund or any number of things, Lucille was always involved,” responded Mary Ann Fischer. Lucille’s brother Clarence said, “She always loved Saint Joseph Academy and has 80 years of fond memories.”

When asked what she would tell the students of today, she replied quickly, “make the most of the opportunities you have here at Saint Joseph Academy and appreciate this wonderful gift.” Her classmate Mrs. Barrett said she would tell them, “make lots of friends!”

Beyonds Alumnae

Catherine Pinkerton, CSJ ’39 was honored for her twenty-five years of service as a lobbyist for NETWORK – A National Catholic Social Justice Lobby. Catherine’s co-workers at NETWORK hosted over one hundred people who came to honor Catherine and her work. Catherine’s plans now include moving back to Cleveland to pursue new avenues of service.

1940s

Jeanne Knoerle SP ’45, former President and Co-Chancellor of Saint Mary-of-theWoods College in Terra Haute, IN, who was honored as one of SJA’s Distinguished Alumnae, surprised the audience when she announced that the college will offer a renewable $11,000 scholarship to any Saint Joseph Academy graduate who is admitted and enrolls at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College. The scholarship was established by the college to honor Sr. Jeanne.

Donna Hawk, CSJ N’60 recently received the Sr. Kathleen Kilbane, CSJ Walk in Faith Award from the West Side Catholic Center.

This award recognizes Sr. Donna as a person who continues to advance and support the mission of the West Side Catholic Center in faith-filled exceptional ways.

Kathleen Duffy Adamle ’66, a Kent State University professor of nursing, is the founder of Dogs on Campus Pet Therapy Program at KSU. Kathleen researched the benefits of pet visits to college students living in residence halls, copyrighted her 20

program, and trademarked the logo that advertises it. She has published her research in the Journal of American College Health, and her program was recently featured in the Akron Beacon Journal. Kathleen also owns dogs that are certified as national search dogs and are part of the Geauga County Sheriff ’s K-9 unit.

Barb Fuhs ’69 was one of more than thirty residents from the southwest suburbs of Cleveland who graduated from Southwest General Health Center’s Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program, which included two and a half months of training. CERT training is designed to prepare people to help themselves, their families, and their neighbors in the event of a catastrophic disaster.

Maureen Brady Johnson ’69 was recently selected by the Ursuline-St. John College Alumnae Association for the 2010 Distinguished Alumnae Educator Award.

This award honors education alumnae from Ursuline College or St. John College who have advanced the profession through education, practice, or research.

1970s

Mary Gonosey Nicolan ’72 is a published book author and will host a twenty-six minute talk show on Christian radio in Las Vegas, Nevada. Topics to be discussed will include items from her new book regarding what people need to know about health care and related topics.

Eileen Mangan Stull ’74 was recently elected Irish Woman of the Year, in view of her dedication to the goals and functions of the Irish American Society. Eileen is currently the principal at Louisa May Alcott Elementary School in Cleveland.

Mary Jordan ’79, a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist, was one of five locals of Irish heritage honored for high achievement in her chosen endeavor with the Walks of Life Award, sponsored by the Irish American Archives Society. The annual awards dinner was held at Windows on the River on February 25, 2010.

Rosetta Geraci Rowbottom N’79, a physician at University Hospital, recently received the 2010 Pride Award for an organization from the Parma Area Chamber of Commerce on behalf of the Parma Health Ministry. Rosetta founded the Parma Health Ministry in 1995 to provide health care services at no cost to those who have no medical insurance and who are not eligible for government assistance.

“Celebrate the Academy” Roaring Twenties a Huge Success

I

n the spirit of the Roaring Twenties, over 400 friends celebrated the continued success of Saint Joseph Academy. This year’s event netted over $180,000 to support academic initiatives and scholarships. Academy President Mary Ann Corrigan-Davis ’71 commented, “Celebrate the Academy” is a joyful evening filled with energy. Seeing people’s commitment to the school is inspiring. I was especially grateful for the hard work and dedication of our Board member Barb Peris Draves mother of Morgan Draves ’12, who really took a leadership role in making this night a success.”

A highlight of the event was honoring Susanne and Gerald Schroer, recipients of the Medaille Shield award for their outstanding generosity and support of Saint Joseph Academy. Sue and Jerry founded the Gerald F. and Susanne F. Schroer Family Foundation in 1995. Each year the foundation gives five percent of its value to education in the urban community, including Saint Joseph Academy. The Schroers have sponsored the “Sursum Corda” award given each year to a faculty member who exemplifies the Saint Joseph Academy mission and the charism of the Congregation of Saint Joseph.

SummerCamps Sports Camps Soccer

Basketball

Keep your existing soccer skills fresh and learn some new ones while having fun with SJA soccer players and Head Coach David Leigh!

The camp will focus on improving dribbling, passing, receiving, and shooting for all skill levels from beginner to advanced travel & club players. Camp will include attacking and finishing drills in a fun, educational format. Return to your local fall soccer team with sharpened skills and tips on how to make yourself a more valuable player! All girls will need to bring a water bottle, soccer ball, and wear shin guards.

Join SJA coaches and players to improve your basketball skills! This camp focuses on individual fundamental skills of ballhandling, shooting, passing, rebounding, and team strategies. Instruction will be mixed with exciting games, drills, contests, prizes, and spirit!

For years, Saint Joseph Academy has provided a musical theatre camp that creates a great showcase for all levels of talent. This summer is no exception, as we produce a Broadway style musical revue, starring YOU! The camp will highlight each girl’s individual strengths; no audition or past experience is required. Get ready to sing, dance and defy gravity! This camp is directed by Kevin Joseph Kelly and Jordan Cooper, both of whom just produced the smash SJA hit “Suessical” in the fall of 2009. Maximum of 30 students per camp. Campers will receive a DVD of the final performance.

Spanish Camp Spanish Camp at SJA is an action-packed week of fun and learning! Learn about the language, heritage, and traditions of Spanish-speaking countries and join a tribe: the Aztecs, Mayans, or Incas. Participate in Spanish language and cultural activities, including games, art projects, songs, and dancing. By the end of the week, campers will have a vocabulary of over 100 words. No previous knowledge of Spanish is required to participate. Taught by SJA’s Spanish teacher, Mr. Garcia, a native of Mexico, and his wife, Mrs. García.

Digital Music Mixing

Students will use Mixcraft Multi-Track Recording Studio to create a personalized mix of custom sounds, including precise loops from pre-recorded songs, in a variety of musical styles. You’ll have all the necessary tools you need for pre-mixing, mixing down and creating your own professional DJ mixes, choosing from an expansive library of instruments and sounds.

Summerstage

Campers participate in writing, producing, and performing in an original show which will be presented for family and friends on the final day of camp. Although girls learn about all different aspects of theater, Summerstage is more than just a theater camp. It is a place to grow, make friends, and feel good about yourself! Our main goal is for girls to gain confidence and have a positive experience.

Summerstage is conducted by Mrs. Mel Kupchik, moderator of our Drama Club. Mrs. Kupchik has over 30 years of experience in all aspects of theater and has directed productions at Saint Joseph Academy since 1996. Maximum of 30 campers. Campers should bring a snack and a drink.

Creating Scrapbooks and Other Keepsakes Turn an old shoebox full of photographs into a beautiful album full of precious memories. Learn scrapbooking techniques to create artwork with your photos. Projects include creating such keepsakes as an illustrated journal, a photo frame, a decorated family tree, and others. There will be tips on how to take better photographs and how to preserve them. Campers should bring 20–50 photographs on the first day to use in projects. All other materials are provided, including a 12”x12” album.

Digital Fashion Design Students will explore many aspects of fashion design, including styles, trends, and couture, and have the opportunity to take a design from concept to construction.

See your fashion ideas come to life using computer tools and software such as Graphire drawing tablets, Microsoft PhotoStudio and Paint, Moviemaker and PhotoStory 3 for Windows. You can showcase your designs with a narrated and/or musical slideshow of your portfolio to take home on a CD and participate in a duct tape fashion competition! This program is designed to teach entrepreneurship and product development.

Grand Reunion 2010

Mark Your Calendars for Friday, October 8, Saturday, October 9, and Sunday, October 10, 2010.

Friday night there will be a get together at SJA for the classes of 1995, 2000, and 2005.

Saturday night there will be a dinner for all SJA reunion classes ending in “5” or “0” at the Cleveland Yachting Club.

Sunday there will be a brunch at SJA for the classes of 1935, 1940, 1945, 1950, 1955, and 1960 at 10:00am.

At noon, there will be a Mass at the school for all the SJA reunion classes and their families, followed by light refreshments and Open House.
