One of the very best parts of my job is introducing people to Saint Joseph Academy. Although we have been educating the young women of Greater Cleveland for more than 120 years, some folks have never been on campus before. I like to have people visit during the school day because that is the very best time to visit! If you could join us, here is what you would encounter.

You would see energy, enthusiasm and eagerness on the part of the student body. You would see an engaged faculty, challenging and encouraging the students to do their best.

You would see a staff of committed individuals in areas like finance and advancement and admissions and facilities, all there “for the girls.”

Visitors frequently comment on how happy the students are. How easily they relate to their teachers. How friendly they are as they greet our visitors and share something about their experience at SJA. We pop into Chinese class where the students are reciting an ancient poem – in Mandarin, of course. In Graphic Design, the students explore new software programs to create artwork. The Pre-engineering students are constructing bridges. The Theology students speak about their faith in a new way, especially the juniors who have just returned from their three-day Kairos retreat. Students in English class see the works of William Shakespeare come alive with the help of actors from the Great Lakes Theatre Festival. With more than 100 classes to choose from this year, the possibilities are seemingly endless.

Recruiters from more than 60 different colleges have been on campus this fall, and they all comment on the outgoing nature of our young women. Guest speakers remark on the openness of the students to learning and the confidence they have to ask questions. These characteristics are some of the benefits of being in a single gender environment.

When you visit during the school day you would also feel a spirit, a sense of belonging. As we have learned so well from our sponsoring Sisters of the Congregation of St. Joseph, all are welcome!

Our theme this school year is “Serving the Dear Neighbor,” a practice at the very core of the spirituality of the Congregation of St. Joseph. The students and adults alike are engaged in giving service to every kind of neighbor without distinction, as you will see in the pages that follow. We are proud of the 45 seniors who have been commissioned as Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist, a service to the SJA community and also their home parishes. Speaking out for the unborn or preparing meals for women in a shelter are other examples of how our students are “serving the dear neighbor.” Being a caring community where every kind of girl is welcomed is also part of who we are. And if you want to attend a liturgy with great music and singing and an engaged congregation, come to one of our all school masses. You will see 669 respectful young women attentive to the Word of God and eager to receive the Body and Blood of Christ.

Senior Awarded Coveted Spot in NASA Online Program

W

hen senior Ashleigh Robertson logged into her e-mail account one day in early September, her heart skipped a beat when she saw that one was from NASA. When she opened it, she couldn’t believe her eyes.

“I yelled out, ‘Mom, you might want to come here a second and read this e-mail!’” said Ashleigh. The e-mail was notifying Ashleigh that she had won a coveted spot

in the national “INSPIRE Online Learning Community” offered through NASA. INSPIRE, which stands for Interdisciplinary National Science Project Incorporating Research and Education Experience, invites a select number of students nationally to interact with peers, NASA experts, and education specialists 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Participants have a series of assignments to complete, earning points both for mastering the topics as well as the timeline in which the work is done.

Ashleigh heard about INSPIRE through the College Counseling office last Spring.

The program is open to all students in grades 9 through 12 who are interested in science, technology, engineering and mathematics – or STEM – careers.

Ashleigh, who wants to attend either Niagara University or Saint Louis University, fits the bill! “I want to study mathematics and education, possibly majoring in mathematics,” she said. “If I really enjoy INSPIRE, I may end up looking at a career with NASA!”

New Microbiology/Zoology Course Offers Unique Opportunities New this year is a course that offers a unique and exciting opportunity for girls interested in science and zoology … and all the challenging career opportunities within those studies!

The new Microbiology/Zoology class first involves studying the structure and function of micro-organisms, followed by the study of zoology, said science teacher Valerie Sanfilippo, who is handling the microbiology portion of the class. “The students are studying the many manifestations and causes of infectious diseases,” she shared.

The zoology portion involves the classification of organisms, comparative embryology and studying the biology that deals with animals and animal life, including the study of the structure, physiology, development and classification of animals, explained science teacher Maureen Becker, who is teaching the zoology side of the class.

“This class is a lot more hands-on and interactive then I expected. Playing with the

different types of bacteria was a really interesting experience!” shared Emma Ryan ’12.

“I took this class because I hope to do something in the medical field. The interactive aspects have prepared me well for the future,” said Celine Mangan ’12.

World Languages Department Embraces Technology The languages being taught may go back to the dawn of the spoken word, but the World Languages Department is definitely in the 21st century. Teachers and students are embracing technology to help students master the intricacies of Chinese, French, Spanish and Latin.

This integration of old and new is being accomplished by taking advantage of the many online programs that enhance learning a new language, said World Languages Department Chair Holly Ushiroda. Those programs include, for example, Chinese

students practicing to speak the language via Vocaroo.com, or memorize vocabulary words at Quizlet.com.

Spanish teacher Alison Morgan’s students have access to a wealth of online support and practice activities through their textbook.

Students in Spanish III and AP Spanish are using Schoology for online discussions, and both Spanish and French courses use Yabla.com and other Internet sites that allow students to hear a variety of native language speakers.

“Schoology is one of my favorite parts of Spanish class. It pushes me to be informed about world issues. SJA is preparing me to stand out as a well-informed student both in and outside the classroom,” said Julie Simo ’12, who is taking Honors Spanish II. When Honors Spanish III was studying the culture of bullfighting in Spain, the class went online to the Schoology Blog. “It enabled me to see everyone’s perspective.

We are given the time to think about it and discuss it,” said Madeline Miller ’14.

“As we continue to prepare students to use their language skills and make connections with diverse cultures, we will continue to incorporate technologies that support student learning,” said Ushiroda.

Letter from the Principal

Blessings Plentiful, Increased Focus on Rigorous Academics Continues We at SJA are blessed that the Sisters of the Congregation of St. Joseph provide the Academy with such a deep spirituality. The Maxims of the Little Institute are part of the founding of the CSJs in France. The words are particularly apropos for high schoolers experiencing that time in their lives when they truly “put aside your old self … so that you can put on the new,” (Eph. 4:22-24). This change is evident everywhere.

In the short time they’ve been walking our halls, I can already see the difference in the freshman. This is truly their home now. At the other end of the experience, our seniors are starting the emotional and physical separation from their soon-to-be alma mater.

College acceptances are landing in mailboxes and ceremonies celebrating their transition from student to graduate have begun. Not so incidentally, these changes are happening

side-by-side the bustle of area eighth graders arriving for open house and shadowing classes with a current student.

All of this activity is taking place against the dramatic backdrop of the leaves on our campus snapping to attention with shades of oranges, yellows and reds as they make their last grand appearance before bowing to the pressure of wind, rain and snowflakes.

The constant in all this drama is that life is constantly changing.

This summer, the faculty read the book “Focus” by Michael Schmoker. We all chatted online throughout the summer about what our focus should be at SJA, and how we can maintain that focus. SJA students need to be ready to excel at college and conquer the challenges of the 21st century. That means an increasing and more rigorous academic focus.

We are rewriting our curriculum to match the “common core” national standards, as well as the new standards by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. Our technology education continues to grow. A new cart of Macbooks has become available

to students, and teachers are taking advantage of the many online programs to augment classroom instruction. I see the students benefitting from this new approach as I read online discussions between classes, or watch a science class use online materials from University of California Berkeley. Our PreEngineering class has just finished building bridges (literally) and our girls worked with the Saint Edward’s Robotics team to build a T-shirt shooting cannon.

Academically, I am so proud of all our students. But I am also in awe of their Christlike example to one another. In what other school do the juniors cheer the seniors when they just lost to them in a competition?

Or the seniors spend a day welcoming the freshmen? It is the charism of the Sisters of the Congregation of St. Joseph that continues to influence Saint Joseph Academy. It is truly a great day to be at SJA! Sursum corda!

Cleveland Institute of Art Trip Revealed Career Opportunities

E

ighteen art, graphic design and photography students were able to explore potential careers and talk to professional artists and designers, thanks to a fall field trip to the Cleveland Institute of Art. The trip was part of a program called “NEXT: A Pre-College Program at Cleveland Institute of Art for Living + Design,” said Visual and Performing Arts chair Shelly Ahern, who accompanied the students to the CIA. Students also attended two workshops of their choice. Topics included Animation, Biomedical Art, Digital Arts, Game Design, Glass, Photography/Video, Ceramics, Illustration, Digital Drawing, Fiber+Materials, and Printmaking/Enamel.

Students were impressed by a panel discussion on art careers with five CIA graduates working in the fields of Industrial Design, Photography and Digital Media, Jewelry and Metals, and Sculpture.

Three Seniors Receive National Merit Honors

T

hree seniors are the recipients of coveted national academic awards. Kara Hurley was named a 2011-12 Semifinalist and Rose Urankar a Commended Scholar in the 57th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. In addition, Rachel Rivera has been selected a 2011-12 National Hispanic Recognition Program Scholar.

As a National Merit Semifinalist, Kara was competing with 1.5 million students from 22,000 high schools who took the PSAT/NMSQT, the initial screen for National Merit semifinalists. She is in the running for one of the 2,500 National Merit $2,500 scholarships, as well as corporate-sponsored and college-sponsored merit scholarships. All scholarships will be awarded next spring. Kara lives in Berea, is a graduate of Incarnate Word Academy, and is the daughter of Corinne and John Hurley.

She hopes to attend Harvard University or Columbia University and study history and political science. Her extracurricular activities include being co-captain of the cross country

team, National Honor Society president and a member of the SJA track team.

Rose was named a Commended Scholar in the National Merit program, an honor that puts her in the top 5 percent of the students who entered the competition.

Rose lives in Cleveland, is a graduate of St. William (now Sts. Robert and William) and is the daughter of Terri Zupancic and Stanley Urankar. She hopes to attend either the University of Notre Dame or Georgetown University and study Spanish, business and marketing. In addition to high academics, Rose is a member of our acclaimed a capella group Cecilia’s Song, has had roles in both “The Boy Friend” and “Godspell” school productions, and volunteered this past summer at SJA’s acting and singing camp for elementary-age girls.

As a National Hispanic Recognition scholar, Rachel was honored from a pool of more than 235,000 students who took the PSAT/NMSQT test and identified themselves as Hispanic/Latino. Students with GPAs of 3.5 or higher are designated as scholars.

Rachel lives in Fairview Park, graduated from St. Angela Merici and is the daughter of Miguel and Ann Waters Rivera ’83.

She hopes to attend the University of Rachel Rivera Notre Dame and study biochemistry. Her extracurricular activities include being in the Saint Edward High School Marching Band and Concert Band.

‘Game’ Demystifies Stock Market for Students Thanks to an innovative and challenging program sponsored by the University of Cincinnati’s Economic Center, 11 students in Peggy Casselberry’s Accounting class are gaining practical knowledge of the perils and

rewards of the stock market. The program is called SMG™ (Stock Market Game) Ohio.

It is an interactive, online simulation that promotes critical thinking, collaboration, financial literacy and decision making. It is

the only stock market simulation sponsored by the New York Stock Exchange.

The Accounting class was divided into five teams, each with an investment “budget” of $100,000. Teams invested in four stocks on the NYSE and NASDAQ, purchasing at least 100 shares of each stock.

Serving the Dear Neighbor Students Participate in Rally, “Day of Silent Solidarity”

Staff, Faculty Spend Day ‘Serving the Dear Neighbor’

Members of the Catholic Schools for Peace and Justice club don’t just sit and talk about their beliefs… they take action. In October, some 20 members of the group traveled downtown to attend Mass at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist and march to Public Square in support of “Respect Life” month. At the rally, which was also attended by students from 13 other schools in the Cleveland diocese, senior Constance Samuels was one of a dozen speakers addressing the crowd about the sanctity of life.

Faculty and staff members spent a day in October in an All-Adult Retreat, proving that this year’s theme of service applies to everyone and not just students. With a focus on serving at agencies with CSJ connections, teams worked at Providence House (founded by Hope Greener, CSJ), the West Side Catholic Center (founded

by Kathleen Kilbane, CSJ), the St. Augustine Hunger Center (where Corita Ambro CSJ ’53 has ministered for more than 40 years) and the Women’s Outreach Center at Franklin Circle, the newest CSJ-sponsored ministry. Other

teams worked at the Cleveland Food Bank, Laura’s Home, St. Augustine Health Campus and Ennis Court, an assisted living and skilled nursing home in Lakewood.

“Our activities included visiting residents, helping prepare food, even painting and cleaning if that’s what was needed,” said Dean of Women Marie Ciolek, who helped coordinate the day.

Returning to SJA after a day of work, participants reflected on what the day meant, and listened to further words of inspiration from Marietta Starrie CSJ ’49, the CSJ “Sister on Campus” for SJA. Sr. Marietta visits the school twice a week, providing spiritual counsel to students and faculty.

Prayer and Presence Partnership Is Spiritual Boost for Students, CSJs

Members of the SJA community and the Congregation of St. Joseph are joining spiritual forces again this year for the Prayer and Presence ministry. The Prayer and Presence Partner program pairs each grade at the Academy with two CSJ Sisters who pray for them and share the spirit of charism throughout the year in various ways.

Also providing spiritual counsel to students, faculty and staff is Marietta Starrie CSJ ’49, the “Sister on Campus.”

She came out of retirement to perform this service, visiting the campus several times a week and attending numerous school functions, making sure that all the spiritual needs of the school are met.

Students Lend Helping Hand at Laura’s Home

A

s an example of “Serving the Dear Neighbor,” a group of students are preparing and serving meals three times a month at Laura’s Home, an emergency shelter for women, continuing a program that began in March 2009. The experience has been invaluable for students to see people coping with life’s hardships, said CORE Ministry teacher Renee Brickman ’91. She and fellow CORE Ministry teacher Dan Guion accompany the girls on the visits.

“Some of the residents may be homeless, with others may have experienced domestic violence,” said Caitlin Logue ’15. “It’s an honor to help them out.”

“Students are able to interact with the women and children who reside there and gain an awareness of people in need. It helps them understand that although some people struggle in life with poverty and abuse, we are all the same,” said Brickman.

An overflow crowd of parents, students, faculty and staff filled The Academy Center to celebrate the commissioning in mid-September of 45 seniors as Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist.

The students can now distribute Communion at all school Masses, as well as in their home parishes.

“We are so proud of their Christian witness and service to their ‘dear neighbor,’” said President Mary Ann Corrigan-Davis ’71.

“Unity” Campout Addresses Issues of Racism, Prejudice

Braving early October’s sometimes cold and capricious weather, seven students from the leadership organization Unity participated in an overnight High School Camping Retreat at Camp Wise in Chardon sponsored by The Diversity Center of Northeast Ohio.

The theme of the weekend was the idea of being an “ally,” said math teacher and Unity club moderator Suzanne Smiley-Rozic, who also slept out at the retreat. “To be an ally is to be the person who stands up to those who bully people because of their gender identity or sexual orientation, or any thing that might make them different,” said Smiley-Rozic.

“The ‘Unity’ Club and this campout have helped all of us feel more empathy and compassion,” said Terri Echols ’13.

Student Was Guest Speaker at Hispanic Leadership Meeting This summer, Maritza Linares ’12 had the honor of speaking at a graduation event of the Hispanic Alliance Leadership Development Initiative (HALDI). She was invited to the luncheon by Lorraine Vega, Senior Vice President, Corporate Philanthropy, KeyBank Foundation. Maritza shared

Speakers Inspire Students to be 21st Century Leaders “Women Leading in the 21st Century,” a course using women business leaders to give students added understanding of theories of leadership, as well as expose them to impressive female leaders in Northeast Ohio, has had a series of illustrious and knowledgeable women visitors so far this year.

“Through this class, students are developing skills needed to influence both the local and global community for the common good,” said Social Studies teacher Jessica Novotny. Methods to get that message across include showing real-life examples of management and leadership principles, discussing ethics and the role of ethics in leadership and life, and examining human relations and self-awareness.

Students also learn to develop both oral and written communication skills, and to start using more critical thinking with problem solving and decision making.

“If women – or anyone, for that matter – want to be successful in life, they have to realize that anything is possible through hard work,” said Dr. Miles. Effort, in conjunction with building good working relationships and being flexible with your life choices, will ensure success, she shared.

Her parting words perhaps were the most telling: “I have found that the harder I work, the luckier I get,” said Dr. Miles.

her perspective on leadership and what Cleveland Latino leaders could do for Latino high school students.

“It was a great honor to be asked to share my thoughts,” said Maritza, who first met Mrs. Vega last spring at a special luncheon with the school’s Latina students to discuss how to succeed in business and life.

Maritza is putting her leadership skills to practice by starting a Hispanic Heritage Club. Open to all SJA students, the club will help girls learn how to succeed at their life’s pursuits, regardless of any obstacles.

Three SJA Students Excelled in ArtWorks Program Three SJA students had the honor of being accepted this past summer into ArtWorks, the only multi-disciplinary arts-based job training program for high school students in Northeast Ohio. A unique aspect of ArtWorks is that it helps students develop practical skills in their fields that can be used in the workplace.

Students participating were: Allison Dykes ’13, in painting; Mary Kate McCafferty ’12, architecture, daughter of Ellen Woods McCafferty ’80; and Kaleigh Tuck-Macalla ’13, vocal performance.

“ArtWorks was an incredible experience,” said Kaleigh. “I loved every second and learned so much.”

Added Mary Kate, “I feel so honored to have been chosen to participate in ArtWorks. The experience was invaluable as I follow my dream of becoming an architect.”

Juniors Honored in Upperclass Induction, Ring Ceremony

Shanghai Exchange Student Loves SJA! Her favorite subject is French I and her favorite food by far is a hotdog with ketchup – temporarily replacing her previous favorite food, sushi!

It’s all part of a new life for junior Shelley Chen, who arrived in the United States in August from her home in Shanghai, China for a year at SJA as an exchange student. The experience so far has been both interesting Shelley Chen and exciting!

“I am very happy that I am here at this school,” said Shelley, who lives with Erin Bator ’13 and her family in Bay Village.

“Everything is so different!”

Shelley found SJA through Youth For Understanding, an international educational exchange organization. Her preference was a school in the United States, and Saint Joseph Academy seemed to be a perfect fit. She will be here her entire junior year, returning to Shanghai next June.

In addition to enjoying the academics, Shelley has made many new friends among the students. “I have met a lot of new friends,” she shared. “I loved the Pride Bowl and the bonfire.” to Saint Joseph Academy, Shelley!

The 165 members of the Class of 2013 were officially inducted into the upperclass in a ceremony at the beginning of the school year that included songs, laughter, a moving speech

by College Counselor Maria Mueller and – of course – the distribution of class rings.

“It’s amazing how quickly the last two years have gone by,” said Ginny Sullivan ’13, speaking for her class. “Now we are in the ‘big girl’ seats!”

The class rings were blessed by Sr. Jane Ockuly CSJ ’57 and Sr. Donna Hawk CSJ N’60, the Prayer and Presence Partners for the Class of 2013.

Graduate Helps African Villagers Get Access to Drinkable Water

hannon Tomek ’08 loved the engineering classes at SJA so much that she went on to study civil engineering at the University of Dayton.

This past summer, Tomek managed to merge the ideals of “serving the dear neighbor” learned at SJA with her growing knowledge in her chosen career. Through the university’s ETHOS (Engineers in Technical Humanitarian Opportunities of Service) program, Shannon and two other volunteers traveled to Cameroon, Africa, for 10 weeks to help officials in the city of Buea and the village of M’muock start the process of getting potable water to residents.

Such civil engineering projects are vital for Cameroon, a country located in the northwest area of Africa near the Ivory Coast. “Running water is a scarcity in this country,” explained Shannon.

Living and working in Cameroon is an experience Shannon will not soon forget.

“My first impression was that it was very noisy, very chaotic,” she shared. “There’s a lot of honking and beeping, but I found out that in Cameroon, that’s their way of communicating, saying something like ‘Hey! I’m passing you!’ ” The experience also gave her a deeper understanding of engineering and how it can be used to increase quality of life.

She’s not sure if she will be traveling back to Cameroon with ETHOS next year to finish the project. “I’m graduating and it will depend if I have a job or not,” said Shannon, laughing.

Regardless, she knows her work will ultimately result in hundreds of people having access to healthy drinking water.

Not bad for a summer’s work!

Teacher Has Shakespearean Adventure in London!

It was a “to be” instead of a “not to be” summer of note for CORE ministry teacher Ruth Rowe Holden ’99 as she attended classes and performances during an exciting three-week workshop at The Globe Theatre in London, thanks to a British Universities Summer School scholarship from the Cleveland branch of the English Speaking Union (ESU). Titled “Teaching Shakespeare Through Performance,” the elite group of teachers was an international gathering that included only 18 Americans. Holden was chosen for the scholarship because she has coached SJA students in the Shakespearean Competition for six years.

“Only after I arrived in London did I realize that the theme for their theatre season was ‘The Word is God,’ which featured a lecture series focusing on various translations of the Bible and the connections between Shakespeare’s plays and Scripture stories!” she said.

Workshop attendees had master classes in movement, voice, Shakespearean text, period costumes, period music, period dance and Elizabethan education. At the end of the workshop, attendees performed scenes from Much Ado About Nothing.

“Next summer, I hope to offer a Shakespeare workshop to grade-school students and am looking forward to getting to use more of the tools that I learned over the summer!”

Varsity Soccer – Continuing the five-year plan to strengthen its schedule and become one of Northeast Ohio’s premier high school programs, Varsity finished 2011-12 with an 8-5-4 record. Nicole Mikolcic ’13 (named to the 2nd Team of the Greater Cleveland Soccer Coaches Association) led the scoring with 26 goals and four assists. Alison DeCrane ’14 scored four goals and four assists, Amanda Burns ’15 scored three goals and four assists and Jackie Harter ’15 had three goals and one assist. Captain Sarah Reinhold ’12 had 105 saves in goal. Over the past three years, seniors Jessica Hippler, Abby Leigh, Laura Mayer, Kelsi McCafferty, Lauren Rave and Sarah Reinhold have a record of 28 wins, 9 losses and 11 ties. Soccer is coached by David Leigh, husband of Donna Steiger Leigh ’76, father of Amanda ’06 and Abby ’12.

was filled with ups and downs and many new faces. The 42-member team, under the guidance of science teacher and coach Fred Kieser, celebrated trophy-winning meets early, including a second-place, openingseason performance at Berkshire, and a narrow second-place finish at Villa Angela - Saint Joseph. The Junior Varsity team excelled in its meets, and Varsity relied on a pack attack to score. Three runners who excelled this year are seniors Jessica Sirchen and Mary Kate Chambers and sophomore Rachel McGuire.

A program-first occurred this fall for the team as SJA hosted its first-ever home meet and senior night in the Metroparks Rocky River Reservation.

Golf – The Jaguar Golf Team

finished the season strongly despite a 5-11 match play record and won over Rocky River and Bay High Schools in the final match of the season. In tournament play, the Jaguars gained valuable experience at some of the best golf courses in Ohio. These included: Canterbury, Westwood, Silver Lake, Rosemount and The Legacy, where the Jaguar Golf Team finished sixth at the Sectional Tournament. Freshman standout Kaitlin Rose ’15 qualified and advanced to the State Qualifier at The Legends of Massillon. The Golf Team was coached by Joe Battaglia, father of Katie ’13.

Varsity Volleyball – Crew – During its first-ever Fall season,

the Rowing Club set the bar high. On September 17, the athletes – with head coach Rob Zdankewiecz – raced in front of a home crowd at The Head of the Cuyahoga race.

The novice 8+ team of Maggie Sudetic ’13, Hannah Smith ’14, Karen McGraw ’13, Angelina Morales ’13, Kayla Moore ’14, Casey

Sudetic ’13, Jennifer Bajorek ’12, Maggie Bishop ’13 and coxswain Nina Ripich ’14 won the event with a time of 20:25, a full minute and sixteen seconds ahead of Toledo’s St. Ursula Academy. The second novice 8+, competing in the same event, rowed a competitive race to finish seventh of 10 entries. In the second race for the Jaguars was the women’s junior novice 4+ with 11 crews racing, the Jaguars’ first 4+ team took the silver medal with a time of 21:47. The second novice 4+ boat finished in seventh place and the third 4+ boat took eighth.

Two weeks later, the Jaguar Crew traveled to Orchard Lake, Michigan, for the Head of the Orchard, Round the Apple Regatta. Despite cold temperatures and a wind-shortened course, the first novice 8+ team (Maggie Sudetic ’13, Hannah Smith ’14, Karen McGraw ’13, Angelina Morales ’13, Audrey Rieman ’15, Kayla Moore ’14, Casey Sudetic ’13, Jennifer Bajorek ’12 and coxswain Nina Ripich ’14) won its second gold medal, 36 seconds ahead of Detroit Boat Club. The second novice 8+ finished fifth out of 8 entries. As the windy conditions picked up throughout the morning, the novice 4+ races were canceled.

The team’s third and final regatta took place in October in Columbus, Ohio. The Speakmon Memorial Regatta fielded the largest and toughest competition for the fall season. With 23 entries in the Women’s Novice 8+ Event, the Jaguars’ first novice 8+ finished fourth behind crews from Westerville Rowing Club, Dublin Crew and Detroit Boat Club. The second novice 8+ finished eighteenth. In the Women’s Novice 4+ event, the first 4+ team of Maggie Sudetic ’13, Hannah Smith ’14, Karen McGraw ’13, Angelina Morales ’13 and coxswain Nina Ripich ’14 took gold, only 0.14 seconds ahead of Dublin Crew. The second and third 4+’s rowed competitive races finishing ninth and twentieth respectively out of 24 boats.

Volleyball, coached by Mike Mileti, had a terrific season, ending with 17-7, the best record in the history of SJA volleyball!

the Pickerington Invitational in Columbus, placing fourth at the Magnificat showcase, beating the undefeated Avon Eagles, defeating Amherst and putting up a great fight against Magnificat, taking them to 5 games in a tense, two-hour match.

Varsity Tennis – Under head coach Dan

Mitoff, Varsity had a strong season, finishing with a conference record good enough for a third-place finish in a nine-team league. Varsity had a 10-10 season record, including a 4-4 conference record in their United States Tennis Association division. The Jaguars played a strong schedule that included four of the top 10 teams in the state. Key wins throughout the season included a 3-2 victory over Walsh Jesuit and a 4-1 victory over Rocky River. SJA also had a pair of 3-2 wins over Beaumont.

Leading the way for the Jaguars was No. 1 singles player Liz Wagner ’12, who played many of the top area players. Wagner finished with eight wins against strong competition, including key victories over Walsh Jesuit, Hudson, Triway, and Rocky River. Missy Drapac ’14 finished with the best record on the team at 13-8 playing No. 3 singles and was the only player to contribute an individual victory in all ten of the team’s wins.

For career totals, Allie Zubkowicz ’12 tallied 638 kills and holds the record as the all-time kills leader, Breanna Terlop ’12 is the second all-time assist leader with 1,468 assists. She also holds the record for service points in a career with 431, and the record holder in aces with 87. Breanna was also named The Plain Dealer Player of the Week this season. Hannah Smith ’12 is the all-time dig leader with 941 digs and she stands second in service points with 350, and third in aces with 58.

Alumnae S po t lig ht : Leaders in T Maureen Baddour Moses ‘67

Maureen Baddour Moses discovered art therapy while exploring continuing education options after her children had reached high school and college age.

The field appealed to her for two reasons.

It brought together the areas of learning that Maureen was most passionate about – the creative arts and the sciences. It also allowed her the opportunity to merge her own gifts and talents and, as a result, help others understand theirs, a responsibility of social

consciousness instilled in her by the Sisters of the Congregation of St. Joseph while an SJA student.

“I have always understood from my SJA education that we have a duty to contribute our own talents toward a better world,” she says.

Maureen graduated from Marygrove College in Detroit, Mich., in 1971 with a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry and biology. After raising her children, she enrolled at Cleveland State University to complete course work in art and psychology in order to gain admission to the Master of Arts in Art Therapy program at Ursuline College. She graduated from Ursuline in 1999.

Today she is a board-certified, registered art therapist with an independent practice. She has worked for a variety of agencies over the last 12 years and serves as an adjunct professor at Ursuline for its Master of Art Therapy clinical program. She also is a professional clay artist and sells and displays her work in galleries and juried art shows throughout the city.

Maureen credits the many courageous people with whom she has worked for influencing her career path. “These people have faced tremendous life crises and yet found the strength and courage to continue on and to live the fullest lives possible,” she

marvels. “The power of art to heal is truly tremendous, and they have found some of that strength through insights gained in our art therapy sessions. I am honored to be able to bring that gift into their lives.”

She has been married to Dr. Joseph Moses for 39 years and lives in Westlake. They have two sons, Joe and Jon, and two daughters, Chrissy and Annie – all of whom are grown and living fulfilling personal and professional lives in Cleveland and in California. The couple also has four grandsons.

Maureen was the first of five sisters to graduate from SJA; her sisters are Patrice Baddour Lorence ’69, Mary Baddour ’72, Teresa Baddour Hooper ’80 and Karen Baddour Orgrinc ’88. The family holds their alma mater in high esteem. “We believe deeply in the school’s mission to educate and inspire women to be caring and socially conscious leaders for our world,” she explains.

To honor the excellent education she received at SJA, Maureen and her husband established an endowed scholarship at the school to be awarded annually to a deserving student.

In her leisure time, Maureen enjoys spending time with her grandchildren, playing golf, traveling, visiting museums and reading.

Christine Smajdek Schulte N’80 Accounting was her original career choice – until Christine Smajdek Schulte realized she was unable to picture herself doing that kind of work every day. An aunt who was a nurse at St. Vincent Charity Hospital steered her in a new direction when she encouraged Christine to volunteer there while going to college.

This exposure to health care, combined with a personal stint in physical therapy for a knee injury, put Christine on a new path.

She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in physical therapy from Cleveland State University in 1986 and took a position as a staff therapist at St. Vincent. She worked there four years before transferring to 14

Christine’s work in health care has presented many opportunities over the years. After completing her Master in Business Administration in 2006, she was asked by Marymount’s chief executive officer to introduce a “Patients First” initiative hospital-wide. Her challenge was to educate all employees about patientcentered care – the initial effort in bringing this type of patient-focus to The Cleveland Clinic’s regional hospitals.

The journey led Christine to work with Barbara Jean Sever, OSU ’64 at Ursuline College. The college provided space for

Ellen Woods McCafferty, M.A. CCC/SLP, acknowledges that growing up in a large Irish family in a West Side Catholic neighborhood influenced her choice of profession — speech-language pathology. It also provided some early on-the-job training.

“I was the tenth child in a family of twelve, so patience was a virtue formed out of necessity, particularly considering I have seven brothers,” she says, half-jokingly.

Even at a young age, Ellen had an interest in working with special-needs children, especially those who had difficulty expressing

themselves. Two of her childhood friends were neighbors with Down Syndrome. One of them primarily used gestures and word approximations to communicate. He also used some basic American Sign Language (ASL), which sparked Ellen’s interest in learning it. As a teenager, she volunteered at “Camp Happiness,” a summer day camp operated by Catholic Charities for children with special needs. Working there gave her some real-world experience.

Ellen graduated Cum Laude with a Master of Arts in Speech and Language Pathology from Cleveland State University in 1991. CSU also designated her as Clinician of the Year. She accepted a position with Lakewood City Schools that same year and has worked there ever since.

In 1992, Ellen was awarded a Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC), the highest credentials offered by the American SpeechLanguage-Hearing Association (ASHA). She has made many valued contributions to her profession through the years, including coauthoring a book of lesson plans for speech pathologists. Last year, she was awarded a grant to fund a project titled “Shared Voices at Horace Mann Elementary School.” This project provides communication systems

called Taptotalk in which special-needs students use the recorded voices of their peers to communicate and read aloud.

Ellen and her husband of 23 years, Dennis McCafferty, live in Cleveland with their three children: Patrick, a freshman at Saint Ignatius; Seamus, a sixth grader at Our Lady of Angels School (OLA); and Mary Kate, a senior at SJA. Having her daughter attend her alma mater brings back fond memories for Ellen.

She vividly recalls the camaraderie she shared with classmates, many of whom remain friends to this day. “I felt so welcome, loved and secure at SJA, and with my daughter there now, I still feel at home,” she says.

Ellen even produced a webpage for members of the Class of ’80 to keep in touch, and is working on an initiative for increasing donations to the school’s annual fund.

In her leisure time, Ellen is busily involved with her parish. She has served as director, president and secretary of OLA’s fine arts council, directing two musicals in recent years – “Annie” and “Beauty and the Beast.” She also manages two booths at the annual parish festival and volunteers at the parish fish fry, which her husband runs.

After 20 years with Marymount – most recently as an Administrative Director of Multiple Ancillary Services – Christine accepted a position last December as Director of Outpatient Rehab and transferred to The Cleveland Clinic Rehabilitation and Sports Therapy.

She credits her time at Nazareth Academy with nurturing an ability to handle change. According to Christine, the only “constant” in healthcare is change, and

Nazareth provided great preparation for that environment, especially as it transitioned from an all-girls school to the now co-ed Holy Name High School.

She recalls school days filled with friendships and fun. “I am blessed to have friends from high school still in my life today — Val Skiba Tocci N’80, Kathy Gilbert Brocklehurst N’80, Anne Halloran Rossoll N’80 and Karen Matwijiw Pokrandt N’80,” says Christine.

She became acquainted with sister school SJA when her daughter Samantha Schulte ’10 enrolled. “It was great to share some of the same traditions with Sam and watch her

develop the same lasting relationships with her friends,” she reflects. “It was also special to share these experiences with my mother, Barbara Palinchik Smajdek ’48.”

Christine was recently asked to serve on SJA’s alumnae board. “I’m enjoying the connection and am proud to be a Nazareth representative sandwiched between a mom and a daughter who are SJA alumnae,” she says.

She and her husband of 25 years, Richard Schulte, live in Parma. Daughter Sam is a second-year pharmacy student at Ohio Northern University. Her son Drew is a senior at Marietta College, majoring in International Leadership and Spanish.

G rand R eunion Lots of laughter and cries of “You look great!�

1945 were the hallmarks of the Grand Reunion festivities for the Saint Joseph Academy classes of 1936, 1941, 1946, 1951, 1956, 1961, 1966, 1971, 1976, 1981, 1986, 1991, 1996, 2001 and 2006 the weekend of October 7-9, 2011. Friday night, an informal get-together took place for the young alumae from the classes of 1996, 2001 and 2006. These classmates had the opportunity to reconnect, tour the school and pose for class photos. Saturday night, a formal dinner took place at the Westwood Country Club.

Finally, a brunch was held on Sunday morning for the classes of 1936, 1941, 1946, 1951, 1956 and 1961, lovingly called the Golden Girls for having graduated 50 or more years ago. Following brunch, Mass was held in the Auditorium for all alumna and their families, followed by light refreshments and tours of the school. CSJs joining in the fun included past principals Catherine Pinkerton (Mary Pius), Patricia Finn (Marilyn) and Kathleen Carey.

It is Better to Give and Receive

When John and Colleen Conway Cooney sat down to discuss how they could best support Saint Joseph Academy, they immediately thought of a Charitable Gift Annuity. John is an attorney who served as a member and chairman of the Board of Directors for the school. Colleen grew up on the east side of Cleveland and has served as an Appellate Judge for Cuyahoga County since 2001.

Colleen serves on the CSJ Ministries board as well. They have lived in the West Park area for some time and appreciate the jewel Saint Joseph Academy is to the neighborhood.

Colleen’s father, James P. Conway, was a highly respected estate planning officer for many institutions in Cleveland area. The Charitable Gift Annuity was his most frequently recommended gift of choice for individuals wishing to support various causes and institutions because of its generous return to the donor and its tax advantages. John and Colleen’s own knowledge of the law and her father’s example led them to establish a Charitable Gift Annuity for Saint Joseph Academy.

Their reasons included: • The gift will be invested with other funds of the school and their payments will be made automatically according to their desired schedule.

• It pays them, or a named beneficiary, a consistent favorable return, based upon their ages, for the rest of their lives.

• It can be easily set up with a minimum gift of $5,000 cash, a portion of which is tax deductible.

• A portion of each payment is also tax deductible.

• If you fund the CGA with a transfer of stock, you will also avoid any capital gains tax.

• After a lifetime of payments, whatever is left in the annuity will pass to Saint Joseph Academy to support the educational programs of the school and continue to meet the challenges of developing new initiatives.

here are certainly many ways that you can assure the future of Saint Joseph Academy. Obviously, the Annual Fund and participation in fundraising events are vital. But there is an easy way to help the school’s educational and spiritual mission after you are gone – that option is estate planning.

Since no one can be absolutely certain of their wealth or future needs, the following choices are available: Specific Bequest – To give a specific dollar amount to Saint Joseph Academy, the following language is suggested: “I give and bequeath the (sum or description) of my estate to Saint Joseph Academy, Cleveland, Ohio, an Ohio not-for-profit corporation, for its general charitable purposes.”

Residuary Bequest – To designate a portion of your remaining estate, after taxes, expenses, and other debts are paid, the following language is suggested: “I give and bequeath (all or percentage of the rest, remainder and residue) of my estate to Saint Joseph Academy, Cleveland, Ohio, an Ohio not-for-profit corporation, for its general charitable purposes.”

Contingent Bequest – To designate a portion of your estate to Saint Joseph Academy, if your other primary intentions cannot be met, the following language is suggested: “In the event that (my spouse or my children) shall not survive me, then I give and bequeath (sum or description of property) of my estate to Saint Joseph Academy, Cleveland, Ohio, an Ohio not-for-profit corporation, for its general charitable purposes.”

This statement may be signed, dated and added to your will to assure that your wishes be fulfilled. Saint Joseph Academy would like to create an opportunity for alumnae who work in the field of education to come together as a group called Academy Educators. This endeavor was prompted

by Megan Hudson Traum ’92 who met recently with Principal Blake Prewitt, Vice President for Advancement Constance S. Sipple, and Alumnae Director Mary Ann Fischer ’66 to discuss the benefits of such a group. These benefits include creating partnerships between alumnae and SJA for tutoring and shadowing opportunities, creating joint volunteering opportunities, and providing SJA students opportunities to explore careers in education and related fields. St. Therese Alumnae Luncheon

Nazareth Alumnae Enjoy Reminiscing, Good Food

Fifteen graduates of St. Therese Academy spent an afternoon getting re-acquainted – and making new friends! – at a luncheon on September 29. After lunch, the graduates went to the SJA chapel for a Mass officiated by Fr. James Becherer.

Some 86 Nazareth Academy alumnae – including seven Nazareth teachers! -- gathered at the 100th Bomb Group Restaurant on a rainy Sunday in September for an afternoon of camaraderie and memories.

Special recognition was given to members of the Class of 1961 who were celebrating the 50 year anniversary of their graduation.

Sr. Rita Mackert, CSJ ’52 retired after 56 years teaching first grade, with 43 of those years at Sts. Joseph and John School in Strongsville. The school held a reception in her honor to recognize her many years as a valued member of the school community. Sr. Rita will continue to help tutor first and second graders, and help with school liturgies.

Daneen Georgy Warner ’66 has worked as a hospice chaplain at Gentiva Hospice for the past two years. This work is what led her to take her own spiritual journey on the Camino de Santiago, a 2,000 year-old path in northern Spain. The route that Daneen traveled is approximately 500 miles. She walked 350 miles of it alone and received a compostela, or certificate of accomplishment that is given to pilgrims who walk a minimum of 100 km. Daneen is writing a book about her experience.

Ashley Thomas ’02 was sworn in as a fulltime Assistant Prosecutor for Erie County, Ohio, in August of this year.

Leah Baxendale ’03 teaches Spanish at the Montessori High School at University Circle.

Margaret Sweeney Kresser ’03 married Tony Kresser on May 21, 2011 at Our Lady of Angels Church in Cleveland, Ohio. Members of her bridal party included Sandy Abraham ’03, Kate Dunson LaMarca ’03, Jacqueline Gonzales ’03 and Lisa Sanniti ’03. Ashley Nemeh ’06 was the vocalist at Margaret and Tony’s ceremony. Margaret is a law clerk with the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals.

Emily Gehring ’06 graduated from St. Louis University in 2010 with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. She is now a first year law student at ClevelandMarshall College of Law. Molly Baxendale ’07 graduated with honors from John Carroll University. She is now attending Cleveland-Marshall College of Law. Emily Tarr ’07 graduated Summa Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa from the College of Wooster. She is an Account Coordinator at Liggett Stashower.

Teresa Mangan ’09 participated in a bike trip from New York City to Cleveland, through the Appalachian Mountain and Allegheny Mountain ranges. The trip was in preparation for the Golden Gate Bridge to Brooklyn Bridge bike trip that will take place next summer.

Emily Alberty ’11 received the Linda M. Kane ’75 Scholarship for the 2011-2012 school year at Cleveland State University.
