September 2018 Dear Friends of Saint Joseph Academy, We are deeply grateful for our many blessings. The 2017-2018 school year marks another year of extraordinary achievements for Saint Joseph Academy. Our students continue to excel in service to the dear neighbor, academics, the fine arts and athletics. Our faculty and staff are committed to the triumphs of our young women and our alumnae are making an impact in their communities both professionally and through service. Our students are called to become women of unifying love. This past year we all committed to “Practice Empathetic Justice,” one of the characteristics of this love. Students, faculty and staff worked for systematic change to bring global equality in ways big and small, by being devoted to doing justice with compassion and respect for others. A Sophomore organized the first mass at a high school in the Cleveland diocese that was celebrated in American Sign Language. Students in Engineering created puzzles in the Makerspace innovation lab for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia to stimulate memory muscles, and then shared time with residents of a memory care facility. This summer, 13 Saint Joseph Academy students embarked on a service trip to the Dominican Republic. While on this service trip, they painted a total of 29 houses and taught 100 young children at a community vacation bible school. Several of these students also spent three days volunteering in a medical clinic, shadowing registered nurses, pharmacists and nurse practitioners where they interacted with more than 300 patients. This past year, students completed over 29,000 hours of service to the dear neighbor. Enrollment was again extremely strong, with 723 students from more than 60 zip codes. We celebrated the academic achievements of our students, including nine National Merit Scholars. Twenty-five Seniors completed the Health Sciences Honors Program and seven Seniors won the national grand prize for the Lexus Eco Challenge. Students excelled in the Ohio Music Education Association vocal and instrumental musical competitions and won visual arts contests. More than 35% of the student body participated in the performing arts programs. Our Jaguars made a repeat visit to the Final Four in volleyball, placed two crew boats in the top ten at the National Championship Regatta and won the District championship in basketball. This past year, 51% of the student body participated on a team in 16 different sports, with an average GPA of 3.64. We also were recognized as “Best School Spirit” by the local news. All of these achievements could not happen without your generosity and commitment to our great school. We are so grateful for the partnership with our Sisters of the Congregation of St. Joseph, faculty and staff, parents, alumnae and friends. Thank you for continuing to provide the support necessary to offer the quality Catholic education that enables our young women to thrive. In some attempt to express that profound gratitude, I am trying to help other young women to experience the same lifechanging gifts in their lives through being able to receive an education at Saint Joseph Academy. In June I completed my 30th year of teaching and working at Saint Joseph Academy, which affords me a unique perspective. It enables me to witness first-hand that this “pearl of great price” – a top-quality, Catholic education through the lens and continued influence and support of the Congregation of St. Joseph, carries into the present day in new and exciting ways while still very much grounded in that foundation.
