Nancy graduated with her Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from John Carroll University, where she was involved in many campus organizations, including Middle Eastern Student Association, Intramural Soccer, Cross Country, Pre-Health Club, Environmental Issues Group, Students for Social Justice and volunteered with several nonprofits. Nancy continues to serve the dear neighbor without distinction through her volunteer work tutoring underprivileged children at inner city schools, specifically in math and science. She believes that every child has the power to change the world. She recently took a job in Clearwater, Florida as a Lead Chemist and Microbiologist for Liquid-Vet (“Cool Pet” Holistics) formulating liquid vitamins for pets.

She encourages her students to participate as confident, forthright and courageous leaders. She revised Trinity High School’s curriculum for physical education classes to include units on self-defense, yoga, mindfulness, biking and swimming. In addition to teaching a full schedule of classes and serving as department head, Erin has taken on responsibility for numerous extracurricular activities.

She has been Head Advisor to the Ski and Snowboard Club, Assistant Coach for the Girls’ and Boys’ Cross Country team, served on the school’s concussion committee, assisted with the girls’ basketball team, drill team tryouts and musicals. She advises Advanced Physical Education students participating in the MetroHealth Teen Brain Health Competition, which involves creating videos to educate fellow students on subjects affecting mental health. Through curriculum development and energetic engagement in school activities, Erin is creating a positive and inspirational learning environment for her students at Trinity High School.

What Would You Tell Your Twelfth Grade Self?

“Develop an appreciation for meeting all kinds of people. Travel. Network. Have faith that great things are yet to come. Be persistent. Be a woman of your word. Be able to identify when you aren’t being appreciated and move on —whether it be a relationship or a job — and always remember to be good to your family, friends and yourself.”

This program caters to children with a vision problem that impacts their learning in some way. This therapy allows students to learn more efficiently and teaches them coping mechanisms to enhance their learning. As an initiative to support pediatric eye care, she tests children to determine if they have a visual information processing disorder. Identifying this issue early on in life allows her to assist students in their learning journey.

The Vision Therapy Program at Red Bank Eye also assists the elderly, stroke victims and those with previous traumatic brain injuries. In her free time, Katherine is committed to her Ukrainian heritage, serving on the Ukrainian Scouting Camp as an executive board member and has planned and participated in missions trips to Haiti to focus on eye health.

What Would You Tell Your Twelfth Grade Self?

“Always remember to stay true to yourself because that is when you are the happiest. In a world filled with so many outside influences and pressures from social media, it is easy to try to please others and go with what is ‘cool’ or ‘popular.’ Always remember that you know in your heart what is the right thing for you to do.”

At Saint Joseph Academy, every student volunteers their time to help serve the dear neighbor and Rachel is no exception.

Taking that mission to heart after graduation, she went to Biloxi, Mississippi to help with post-Hurricane Katrina relief efforts.

After earning her Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Rachel went on a medical mission trip to India and later volunteered her time for three weeks to teach children medical information in Bali, Indonesia. Volunteering is important to her because she believes it allows individuals to gain a better understanding of another person’s life while also getting to help an individual or community. As a registered nurse, Rachel takes care of people from all walks of life without hesitation and practices empathetic justice. In addition to working 12+ hour days, Rachel is currently pursuing a Master of Science in Nursing with hopes to become an adult/gerontology nurse practitioner. There is no limit for her when it comes to taking care of her community.

What Would You Tell an Eighth Grade Girl About Saint Joseph Academy?

“There’s a real community built around Saint Joseph Academy. There is always, always someone to support you, no matter what you’re going through—if it’s related to schoolwork, sports, extracurriculars or something else entirely. Everyone is very welcoming and accepting, even if you’re a little bit different or into niche stuff, if you’re awkward, an introvert or feel like you’ll never fit in—it doesn’t matter. Saint Joseph Academy is there for you. The community will love you through it.”

She currently serves in the juvenile division of the court and works closely with the special population of minor defendants.

Diagnosed with colorectal cancer shortly after graduating with her second Master’s degree, Darcy organized her network into the largest team in Cleveland’s Undy RunWalk for Colon Cancer, raising more than $15,000 for the cause. She also joined the board of the Colorectal Cancer Alliance’s Never 2 Young Campaign, where she is able to use her research and communication skills to contribute to a cause that affects her intimately. Through her work and involvement all conducted while undergoing treatment, Darcy is a change agent. Darcy’s relationships are influenced by love for others, a reverence for shared experiences and a respect for different perspectives, all values enhanced from her time at Saint Joseph Academy.

“Saint Joseph Academy is a great high school because of the female-driven education. As I’ve gotten older, I truly realize the value in having been educated in a female environment. From the faculty to the students, being constantly surrounded by supportive and intelligent women will help you realize your own voice and value. Saint Joseph Academy fostered an environment of open-dialogue where young women were free to voice their passions and complaints, without judgment.”

Kristen uses her talents to create something clients look for and then navigates the expectations to help others. Through exploration of various facets at Saint Joseph Academy, Kristen had the freedom and flexibility to explore her passion, which built a foundation for her career. Her pursuit for growth was certainly encouraged and nurtured at Saint Joseph Academy.

ACHIEVEMENTS • Certified Montana Master Naturalist • Service Member, Jesuit Volunteer Corps • Editorial Board Member, Camas Magazine Claire learns, works and lives in a way that reflects her core belief set, taking her causes to heart to by learning ways to correct environmental and human injustices. Serving the dear neighbor took Claire to Montana as a part of the Jesuit Volunteer Corps. Once she arrived, Claire immersed herself in service, working with women and children who had survived domestic abuse. In her own home, she embraces the idea of a sustainable community. She and her roommates work to cut out unnecessary consumption and challenge one another to uphold their commitment to the environment, using only what is necessary and recyclable. Currently, Claire is completing two graduate degrees, one in Environmental Studies with a focus on educating other about the natural world, and a master’s in Public Administration. She is truly an example of being one with creation.

“Be flexible and open – oftentimes there are great opportunities in life you just can’t plan for! I’ve found that it’s important to be open to new experiences that aren’t part of my original plan; these are moments where I learn and grow the most.”

ACHIEVEMENTS • NYC Leadership Academy Awards: Aspiring Principal, ETS Recognition of Excellence, Accomplished Rating as a Classroom Teacher • Co-Founder, Open Your Heart Foundation • V olunteer, Koninia Retreats Krystle became an educator to help young children achieve the same goals she gained through her time at Saint Joseph Academy.

Prior to landing in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District (CSMD) as a special education teacher, Krystle started her career at a charter school. She currently serves as the head principal at Clara E. Westropp Elementary School and is one of the youngest head principals in the district. Krystle completed a rigorous program called the Aspiring Principals program offered

by CMSD. Krystle uses her leadership to inspire the faculty, staff and students to build a great cultural foundation. She touches the lives of her students on a daily basis. Krystle co-founded Open Your Heart Foundation with another alumna to honor the sacrifices their mothers, who have since passed away, made for them to attend Saint Joseph Academy, their high school of choice.

ACHIEVEMENTS • Inducted into Sigma Zeta National Science and Mathematics Honor Society • V olunteer, Project Purple Through her involvement with many service projects and active participation in leadership at Saint Joseph Academy, Therese was able to develop important skill sets, characteristics and values that have served her greatly in her post-graduate life and continue to resonate in her career. She has taken initiative in her profession by electing to be a voice for her patients.

She goes above and beyond to work with patients, doctors and insurers to determine what the best options are for each individual and how to best approach their care plan. Therese is able to effectively communicate with her team and managers what the growing issues are among prescription problems, patient needs and industry trends. Through her character of empathetic justice, personal integrity and emerging wisdom, Therese is slowly making strides in systemic change within her field. In 2008, Therese’s father, also a pharmacist, passed away from pancreatic cancer. To honor his memory, Therese began volunteering for Project Purple, a non-profit organization whose focus is to raise awareness, support patients and their families and fund research efforts.

What Would You Tell an Eighth Grade Girl About Saint Joseph Academy?

“There is not one single thing that can describe the positive experience and memories you will have of Saint Joseph Academy. The Academy is far beyond a great education; it is a community where no matter who you are, there is a place for you. You will be pushed academically, but also to grow personally through retreats, theology classes, clubs and the many athletic opportunities. You will automatically be a sister to anyone who has graduated from Saint Joseph Academy. The relationships you will build with your teachers will impact you for the rest of your life.”

The connections she makes at work shine, highlighting why Laura is the epitome of a relationship builder. Laura volunteers her time through Project Citizenship and the Neighborhood Business Initiative, doing pro bono work through her law firm. Laura loves being able to give back to her community. The idea of helping people achieve their dreams – whether that’s becoming a citizen or starting a business – really inspires her to do what she can to help them reach their goals.

What Would You Tell Your Twelfth Grade Self?

“Don’t worry if you have no idea what you want to do with your life. A lot of things change in your 20s, and if you would have told my 18 year old self that I would be doing the things I am doing today, I would have never believed it. You will meet people throughout the next 10 years that will change the course of your life while opening you up to new interests and passions at the same time. It’s easy at 18 to think you have it all figured out, but I encourage you to just sit back, try new things, say yes to every opportunity that comes your way, open yourself up to new experiences and be open-minded to what life has to offer. You’ll be surprised how far you can go.”

She has changed the lives of nearly every medical resident that she has worked with for the better. Mary acknowledges that her time at Saint Joseph Academy laid the groundwork for creating the successful, smart, driven, empathetic and loving person that she is today. She believes Saint Joseph Academy helped shape her future.

In her spare time, Erica is a member of the “Adopt A Class” program, adopting fifth and sixth grade classes at John P. Parker Middle School, a Cincinnati school with underrepresented populations, most of whom live below the poverty line. She mentors these students on a regular basis, helping to instill a love of learning and setting goals for the future. Erica is involved in her local church and was selected as one of eight members of a sacred music group, singing in churches in the Cincinnati area.

Angel is not afraid to challenge systems and exhibits courage within her leadership role as a High School Administrator and Program Coordinator for an at-risk girls’ group through Women of Tomorrow. Angel consistently works to extend academic, educational and career-based resources to her students. She advocates and fosters opportunities that give young women access to higher education beyond high school.

Her work within the program also advances development within the framework of transitioning into womanhood.

She devotes herself tirelessly to empathetic justice, instilled in her by her education from Saint Joseph Academy. Through her work as a Research Assistant at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU), in coordination with the Ohio Alliance to End Sexual Violence and the CWRU Begun Center for Violence Prevention Research and Education, Maggie applies her background as an advocate in the non-profit sector. She uses her skills to process sensitive data, inform the public about sexual assault and domestic violence, and secure the funding and resources to ensure that the most vulnerable and marginalized populations see justice. Maggie is currently pursuing a graduate degree in public health while working fulltime, in order to enhance her ability to serve populations that might otherwise go unnoticed.

Abby also takes a strong interest in women’s leadership causes, participating in the Academy’s Women’s Leadership Symposium to help young women connect with professionals and realize new career opportunities. She not only exemplifies compassionate leadership and service in her professional associations, but she also volunteers at Cleveland Clinic Children’s, Velosano, Providence House and Cleveland Food Bank. Since graduation, her nurturing spirit has expanded through her career and volunteer work. At Xavier University Clare focused her academic career on human occupation studies, peace studies and psychology. In her work as an Occupational Therapist, Clare shows empathetic care for those she serves. Clare’s heart for helping others doesn’t stop in her career; she volunteers her time to several organizations including Camp TimberNook and Gigi’s Playhouse to ensure others have the highest possible quality of life. In addition to volunteering and working full-time, Clare also works part-time at the Harrison Center for Children, providing her services on an outpatient basis to promote increased independence.

During her time at Xavier University, Clare volunteered her time and resources to provide occupational therapy services for individuals in Guatemala. Clare uses her passion for service to deepen her relationship with God and others.

Natalie has recognized the need for global connection in her own neighborhood. Through her leadership, she promotes diversity and cultural awareness in her volunteer work with the Lorain International Princess Pageant. As the chairperson, Natalie coaches participating young women to be strong and independent while embracing their ethnic heritage. Inspired by her time at Saint Joseph Academy, Natalie has taken her positive disposition and spirit of a leader into her own classroom. She is grateful to Saint Joseph Academy for giving her the strength to be able to stand for what she believes in and to make a change. Currently, Natalie sits on the schoolwide Positive Behavior Support Team, an initiative that rewards students for positive behavior rather than providing consequences for negative actions. Natalie’s patience, kindness and unifying love have shown through in her career, making her the Educator of the Month two academic years in a row.

Emily quickly rose from student to Senior Systems Engineer at The Ohio State University. She pushed herself out of her comfort zone by publicly speaking in front of more than 10,000 attendees at the ServiceNow Conference, thriving in a male-dominated career and developing her knowledge of new languages in her personal time. Emily was a mentor to aspiring software engineers at The Ohio State University. She recently took a position with ExchangeBase in Cleveland. She credits Saint Joseph Academy for her preparation and support throughout her life and career. Emily’s integrity and dedication shine through every commitment she makes and every task she tackles.

ACHIEVEMENTS • Wish Granter and Volunteer, Make-A-Wish Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana • Volunteer, Y outh Challenge Maureen’s compassion for others has led her to volunteer her time to make the dreams of children with life-threatening illnesses come true as a Wish Maker volunteer at Make-AWish Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana. While earning her graduate degree, Maureen volunteered with Youth Challenge and learned American Sign Language through evening classes. Always portraying the spirit of a leader, Maureen inspires her third grade students to push themselves out of their comfort zone and to show kindness. She showcases compassionate leadership in her classroom as a teacher, spending countless hours after school helping students with homework and counseling them on their problems. Maureen is not only a teacher to these students but a mother, nurse, therapist and friend. She encourages her students to consider becoming scientists and engineers through her “Engineering Hour” initiative each week. Veteran teachers have applauded Maureen on her ideas implemented into the classroom and empathy for her students.
