Dear Alumnae, Parents/Guardians and Friends of Saint Joseph Academy, In this busy world in which we live, we often rush from activity to activity, taking little time for reflection. Summertime provides the opportunity to take a step back and reflect on the accomplishments of the past school year, to take a breath before preparing for the new year to come.

By all accounts, the 2017-18 was a banner year for Saint Joseph Academy and our students! Enrollment was once again at full capacity with 723 students from over 40 zip codes. Academic achievements included nine National Merit Scholars, 25 Seniors completing the Health Sciences Honors Program and seven seniors winning the national grand prize for the Lexus Eco Challenge. Our young women excelled in robotics competitions, in the Ohio Music Education Association vocal and instrumental music competitions, won the PenOhio writing competition, won visual arts contests and earned awards in Model United Nations conferences, both locally and internationally. The Jaguar athletics teams, now competing in 16 sports, returned to the Final Four in volleyball, the national rowing championships and the state finals in swimming, cross country and track and field.

But have we achieved our spiritual goals? How did we answer our call to mission, to be women of unifying love? Have we lived the charism of the Congregation of St. Joseph, that “all may be one”?

Measuring success in mission is not as easy as calculating a grade point average, but I would argue that it is more important. Many schools have strong academic, athletic and arts programs like us. What sets Saint Joseph Academy apart is our commitment to living the mission and instilling our core values in each young woman entrusted to our care.

We call this our “Character of a Saint Joseph Academy Graduate” statement, and it reads “In the tradition of the Congregation of St. Joseph, the graduate of Saint Joseph Academy is a woman who lives Unifying Love through Empathetic Justice, Service to the Dear Neighbor without Distinction, Personal Integrity and Emerging Wisdom.”

During this past school year, our focus was Empathetic Justice: “Devoted to doing justice with compassion and respect for others, she (the Saint Joseph Academy student/ graduate) works for systemic change to bring about global equality.”

Yes, we can count the 29,000+ hours of service our students performed, but what is behind that number? It is in the students’ reflections that the power of unifying love and empathetic justice is revealed. When they spent time with people afflicted with dementia, they empathized with those who often suffered in silence. When they traveled to Appalachia or the Dominican Republic and even urban Cleveland, they are one with the residents, building personal relationships. When they spoke out against injustice and violence, they worked toward systemic change in our country.

When they attended one of the 19 retreats offered this year, they deepened their relationship with God. When so many of our young alumnae continue to exhibit oneness in relationships with God, others and the Earth, they are truly living out the mission of Saint Joseph Academy. As I reflect these are the achievements that warm my heart and remind me that we are indeed doing God’s work.

PenOhio Competitor Takes Home First Place Writers competed in three rounds of impromptu writing and creating narratives in response to a prompt provided in each round. Each of the writers qualified for the State competition by scoring in the top 50 percent in January’s Regional competition.

Grace Thomas ’19 took home first place in the Varsity division, outscoring 85 of the best high school writers in the state.

even students competed at the inaugural PenOhio High School State Championship at The College of Wooster.

PenOhio is a high school writing league comprised of public, private and parochial

schools across the state. The competition allows students an outlet to see significant literary talent “praised, inspired and rewarded.” PenOhio offers competition and opportunity for scholarships.

The team was coached by Instructional Coach Mrs. Keri Grady and Student Support Services Mrs. Becky Goede McNulty ’96. Congratulations, Grace and the entire PenOhio team!

Students Take Top Honors in Ohio K-12 Chinese Essay Contest Four students took top honors for the 2018 Ohio K-12 Chinese Essay Contest awards among the 9-12 grade group on Saturday, April 21.

The Ohio K-12 Chinese Essay Contest is an annual competition for high school, middle school and elementary school students from all over the state. Students compete by either composing an essay or giving a speech in Chinese on a selected topic. Chinese language experts serve as judges and prizes are awarded at the end of the competitions.

Sivven Oung ’19 won first place in the speech and essay contest taking place at Cleveland State University. Sivven is an international student from Cambodia, speaking Cambodian at home, not Chinese. Placing second in the essay competition were Abby Votaw ’18 and Reagan Bushok ’20, and in third place was Natalie Quellos ’18.

The students competed against others studying Chinese language throughout many districts across Ohio. Competitors were given a prompt and instructed to hand write an essay in the Chinese language.

Saint Joseph Academy students were able to achieve the first place prize, both second place prizes and one of three third place prizes. Congratulations Sivven, Abby, Reagan and Natalie!

Twenty-Five Health Sciences Honors Program Seniors Complete Capstone Presentations

n April, twenty-five Health Sciences Honors Program Seniors who completed the Purple and Gold Pathways presented their individual portfolios. The final presentations highlight lessons learned, clinical hours, what the student hopes to study in college. These presentations are a vital component of the program, which strives to prepare young women for a life of compassionate leadership and service in healthcare professions. Students in the program completed one of two programs, Gold or Purple. The Gold Pathway prepares students for success in a health sciences career that begins directly after college graduation. The Purple Pathway prepares students for an education extending past college toward a doctoral degree.

PRINCIPAL’S CORNER: The defining aspect of the character of a Saint Joseph Academy graduate is that she is a woman of unifying love. Through her unifying love, she demonstrates empathy, wisdom, integrity and service to the dear neighbor without distinction. She does not set herself apart, rather she is “one with” the dear neighbor. She understands that how we do things is as important as what we do.

Through the charism of the Congregation of St. Joseph, she brings God’s all permeating love to the world through the quality of her presence to others, with others. Rather than exalt herself, she empties herself through love as Jesus did, “that all may be one.”

The world, and our country especially, needs women of unifying love right now.

We need listening hearts to hear the voices of those who can’t speak for themselves.

We need listening hearts to bring people together in union, in community. We need listening hearts to hear and understand the pain and fear in the words of other people, even when it is very difficult, even when other people use words of hate and fear that we find injudicious, offensive and repulsive.

For it is in the darkness that the light of the charism of the Congregation of St. Joseph shines brightest. Born in the 1600s in a small dark kitchen in Le Puy-enVelay, France, a small group of women huddled around the warmth and light from the embers in a fireplace. Through their unifying love they started a movement that brought light to the darkness in the lives of the sick, the hungry and the orphaned.

Reborn and reignited through the leadership of Mother St. John Fontbonne in the ashes of the French Revolution, the light could not be extinguished even by years of warfare and the Reign of Terror. And now, at a time when the world has so much material wealth and abundance but so much spiritual

poverty, we need that light of unifying love just as much as before.

The world depends on our students and their character as women of unifying love. We believe in them because we have witnessed the miracles of who they are every day: their thousands of hours of service to the dear neighbor without distinction, their creativity and the beautiful art they make, the thoughtful discussions they have with one another and the love they have for one another –even when they don’t always agree with one another. They demonstrate the “Character of a Saint Joseph Academy Graduate.” They are women of unifying love. They are the light of the world. In the words of Sr. Juanita Shealey, CSJ: they are “the generation that will get it right.”

Zoology and Microbiology Students Tour Research Labs at Cleveland Museum of Natural History

I

n April, students in Science Department Chair Mrs. Valerie Sanflippo’s Zoology/Microbiology classes spent time at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. The students toured the vertebrae and invertebrate research labs. Dr. Gavin Svenson, Curator and Head of Invertebrate Zoology, showed the group collections in research taking place at the museum and advised how to become a laboratory volunteer.

The Department of Invertebrate Zoology is devoted to the study and curation of its collection of insects and mollusks (including mussels, clams, snails, limpets and other related organisms). The department is currently home to the largest collection of praying mantises in the Western Hemisphere, with more than 14,000 specimens. The scientists have built internationally recognized research programs supported by the National Science Foundation and students were eager to learn from them.

The students also explored the museum and spent time in the Perkins Wildlife Exhibit. “We started our Zoology unit in class, where we learned about the evolution of species. It was interesting to see the research conducted to imagine the future of species and what that will hold,” shared Ally Sheehan ’18.

Students Win ‘Wildlife Forever State-Fish’ Art Contest

Alumna Shares Research of the Reintroduction of Wolves

Renee Senft ’18 (sister of Isabella Senft ’16) was named a first place winner for the State of Ohio in the Wildlife Forever State-Fish Art Contest. Claire Kapitan ’20 (granddaughter of Mary Zimmerman Kapitan ’54) won second place and Libby Poole ’19 was recognized in third place. I

n April, students in Science teacher Mrs. Maureen Becker’s classes listened to a presentation by Mallory Fahey ’15 on the reintroduction of wolves in Colorado.

She is currently studying Animal Behavior, Ecology and Conservation and Environmental Studies at Canisius College in Buffalo, New York and is an active member in the Ambassadors for Conservation group at Canisius College. This group compiled research for the question: “Should we reintroduce wolves in Colorado?”

Ms. Fahey shared the advantages, such as benefits for the ecosystem, which has been proven with the successful reintroduction of wolves in Yellowstone National Park. She also shared disadvantages, including the threat to ranchers and tourism, given that wolves and humans compete with each other.

She is passionate about her studies and credits Saint Joseph Academy for instilling her passion. “Taking environmental science at Saint Joseph Academy inspired me to want to study this topic,” she shared with the class.

“The Ambassadors for Conservation support the reintroduction of wolves to Colorado.

We went to Colorado and Wyoming for a week and a half to compile research,” shared Ms. Fahey. “We interviewed people on both sides of the issue and traveled to Rocky Mountain National Park and Yellowstone National Park. We are in the process of filming a documentary to discuss the advantages of reintroduction.”

discovered knowledge and created a “learning portfolio” contest entry. The student-artists created an original horizontal art illustration of any state-fish on the official state-fish list. The artists were required to write an essay relating to their chosen fish species, its behavior, habitat or conservation issues and needs.

Seven outstanding athlete Seniors signed NCAA National Letters of Intent on National Signing Day on Thursday, May 10, joining four of their classmates who signed in the fall.

Regina Baldado will attend Queens University of Charlotte, where she will play rugby. Molly Dever (sister of Bridget Dever ’15) will join Bowling Green State University’s basketball team. Natalie Larkman signed with John Carroll University to pole vault with their track and field team. Brittany Miller will enroll at Gannon University to compete on their diving team.

Julie Panstares (granddaughter of Coletta Kahl Mulloy ’64) will attend Bucknell University, where she will use her talents on the rowing team. Kathleen DeCarlo will attend Notre Dame College to play on their basketball team. Maggie Wagner (daughter of Karen Lee Wagner ’83) will continue her career as a dual-athlete at Walsh University on their soccer and track & field teams. Student Performers Dazzle in Aida

I

n this year’s production of the annual spring musical, Aida, our students, along with young men from Saint Ignatius and Holy Name high schools, delivered a stellar performance of the 19th-century inspired show. The musical ran two weekends in April, telling the forbidden love story of an Egyptian captain and Nubian princess. During the show, songs were performed such as “Elaborate Lives,” “Gods Love Nubia” and “Strongest Suit,” by Sir Elton John and Tim Rice, composer and lyricist of the Disneyproduced number.

The Academy’s rendition of the musical resulted in several student nominations to the Dazzle Awards, an awards program modeled after the Tony Awards® to inspire excellence in high school musical theatre. Olivia Martinez ’19, Aaleah Krone ’19, Maggie Glanc ’21 and Eve Jurinski ’21 were nominated as student performers.

“The music is very challenging and the students met that challenge head on.

They worked for countless Saint Joseph Academy cast members of Aida hours learning the complex harmonies of the songs and creating their diverse characters,” shared Drama Director Mrs. Anne Chriszt-Ising. “This show was not just challenging for the cast but for the crew as well. We had a team of student designers that created the set. From lighting, to sound, to costumes, I am so proud of what our stage crew accomplished.”

Talented Student-Musicians Create Magical and Delightful Moments in Spring Performances Parents, students, faculty and friends of Saint Joseph Academy enjoyed two annual spring performances: April’s “A Touch of Classical” and May’s “Jazz and Cabaret Night” featuring the String Orchestra, Concert Band, Handbell Ensemble, Jazz Band, Advanced Choir, Show Choir and The Academy Chorale.

At “A Touch of Classical Concert,” highlights included: “Symphony No. 25,” by Mozart (used in the movie Amadeus), “Hungarian Dance” by Brahms, “March Slav” by Tchaikovsky, “Second Suite in F” by Holst and a Disney movie medley. The evening concluded with John Phillip Sousa’s “The Invincible Eagle.”

In May, Jazz and Cabaret Night stole the stage with instrumental selections including “Georgia” by Hoagy Carmichael, “The Pink Panther” by Henry Mancini and several hit songs. Vocal selections included “This is Me,” “Seize the Day” and “Java Jive.” At the conclusion, graduating Seniors received special recognition in their last Saint Joseph Academy concert.

Students Learn from Accordion World Champion Students in Vocal Music Department Chair Ms. Kathleen Cooper’s Introduction to Accordion class learned from Cory Pesaturo, three-time World Champion in Digital Accordion, Acoustic Accordion and Jazz Accordion. No one else has ever held this record. At 15, he was the youngest individual to win the United States National Accordion Championship and at 16, he became the youngest accordion soloist to

perform with an orchestra. Mr. Pesaturo is a graduate of the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, where he was the first musician ever to major and graduate in the accordion.

Students were excited to discover their accordion class is likely the only one of its kind offered in a United States high school. The class had either been learning the accordion one or both semesters. “The Accordion class was a brain-child of Principal Mr. Jeff Sutliff and myself. He encouraged me to create a class and take advantage of a unique skill students would not have the chance to learn anywhere else. It is accessible to all students, even students that have never had a music class before. It is also a versatile instrument and found in many cultures, making it ideal for playing a variety of styles and studying world music,” shared Miss Cooper.

The class performed their music for Mr. Pesaturo and he was able to give feedback to help students become stronger accordionists. The students were delighted to learn from someone who has had success in the accordion world.

Paws for Pride 2018 Showcases Amazing School Spirit!

The walls of Saint Joseph Academy shook on May 4 from the cheering and singing of the Paws for Pride activities.

The day was filled with friendly competition, Jaguar spirit and plenty of fun as the Freshmen, Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors competed with class skits, hallway decorating contests and more.

Prom 2018: A Night to Remember Prom 2018 was filled with memories to last a lifetime. Seniors danced the night away by the waterfront at Windows on the River on Saturday, May 19. The venue offered an unforgettable backdrop for students and their dates. Before making their way to the West Bank of the Flats, many paused for a photo opportunity at the Academy. The Class of 2018 didn’t let a little rain damper their spirits for a memorable Prom night.

SERVICE IN ACTION Life-Changing Experiences for Kermit Kids

A

s part of a summer of “practicing empathetic justice,” students and chaperones went beyond traveling to Kermit, WV to run summer camps and repair homes in the tiny Appalachian town, as Saint Joseph Academy’s students have for the past seven years. This year, the Academy invited 16 children from Kermit to Cleveland for the second time since the program began.

The visit impacted not only the guests from Kermit, but also chaperones and students.

“My favorite part was the opportunity to show the children parts of my life and my city, since they shared so much with me last year,” shared Abbie Helmer ’19 (sister of Clare Helmer ’17), who participated in last year’s trip to Kermit. “This experience opened my eyes to the differences between Kermit and Cleveland. I was made aware by the simple things we encountered as a group, such as teaching children how to ride an escalator.”

Kermit is home to ABLE (Affirming, Believing, Learning and Empowering) Families, a nonprofit faith-based agency founded in 1995 by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Wheeling.

“Throughout this visit, I learned to be grateful for what I have.

Many of these children don’t have much but still overwhelm the people around them with unconditional love and happiness. Their visit impacted my faith by seeing how God works through each child’s life on a daily basis,” shared Carol Creter ’20. “Many of the children have gone through a tremendous amount of heartache, but they still have faith in God and that made me step back to reflect on my own spiritual walk.”

In early June, it was time for the trip of a lifetime for the Kermit children! Most had never been out of their small town and were grateful to see what a big city like Cleveland had in store for them.

The children, ages 5-15, experienced a whirlwind of adventures.

They traveled to popular Cleveland venues, including the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo and Rainforest, Cleveland Museum of Natural History, Cleveland Museum of Art, Little Italy, Great Lakes Science Center and of course, Mitchell’s Ice Cream. They were also able to attend a Cleveland Indians game and Edgewater LIVE. “We were told they had never seen a downtown skyline, a baseball game or swam at the beach, so seeing their excitement while traveling to those places in Cleveland was truly heartwarming,” shared Riley Drellishak ’19.

To continue our mission of service, students had the opportunity to impact even more children during the two trips to Kermit scheduled later in the summer!

Saint Joseph Academy UPDATE

Saint Joseph Academy held its first American Sign Language (ASL) mass in April. The Academy is the first school in the Diocese of Cleveland to invite Father Joseph D. McNulty of St. Augustine Church and Diocesan Deaf Apostolate to celebrate in a signed mass.

CarrieAnne Pataky ’20 has been instrumental in founding the Sign Language Club offered at the Academy and works with children who are deaf or have hearing disabilities as a camp counselor for St. Augustine. “I was raised with ASL; both of my parents are deaf and I have several family members who are deaf or hard of hearing. I helped plan the signing mass. I encouraged members of the deaf community who are also St. Augustine parishioners to attend this special mass,” she shared. “The goal of the mass was to expose students to ASL and show what I experience on a daily basis.”

Part of the mass was signed by CarrieAnne, and adults from the St. Augustine community signed as well. Sr. Corita Ambro, CSJ ’53 attended mass and signed along with the sign language interpreter and students of the ASL Club, who signed as they sang throughout the mass.

Engineering Students Support Local Special Needs Families

S

tudents in Science teacher Mr. Bryce Ormiston’s Introduction to Pre-Engineering class put what they learned in class into practice by bringing toys to life to be used by the nonprofit organization, RePlay for Kids.

Students soldered activation switches and 3D printed objects for toys to hold these new activation switches. The modifications allow the toys to be used by special needs children through RePlay for Kids. The organization repairs devices and adapts a wide range of battery operated toys for use by children with disabilities who may have limited resources.

“We are modifying toys and buttons so the child can use the activation switch, which will plug into any toy universally.

We had to rewire by soldering the switch for the mechanism’s battery. I think each child will be thrilled to have this device.

Parents will also benefit from this activation switch because they know their child plays differently than others, so it will be a relief for them to see a device specifically designed for their special needs child,” shared Kiara Hoefsmit ’18.

Pop Tabs Help Support Ronald McDonald House of Cleveland Families With more than 400 pounds of pop tabs collected, Saint Joseph Academy raised nearly $200 for hospitalized children and their families at the Cleveland Ronald McDonald House.

Key Club members presented the pop tabs to the Ronald McDonald House in purple wheelbarrows and were honored with the “Top School Pull Tab Donors” award on behalf of Saint Joseph Academy.

Congratulations to the entire student body for their donations and efforts. Saint Joseph Academy is proud to support the Ronald McDonald House for more than 28 years.

ith their white gowns perfectly pressed and a bouquet of 12 red roses in hand, the 167 members of the Class of 2018 processed down Rocky River Drive to Our Lady of Angels Church for commencement on Tuesday, May 30. The class upheld the traditional “Walk of the Roses,” led

by President Mary Ann Corrigan- Davis ’71 and commencement speaker and Saint Joseph Academy Distinguished Alumna Daria Roebuck ’75.

Ms. Roebuck is the Retired Vice President of Human Resources, ERICO International Corporation, and now serves on Cleveland State University’s Foundation Board of Directors, as Executive in Residence and Chair of the Visiting Committee for the Monte Ahuja College of Business.

Ms. Roebuck encouraged students in their future endeavors by sharing advice that applied to her world travels with ERICO International Corporation: “I learned to blend in at the Academy; I experienced firsthand it isn’t just an all-girls school, it’s an all kinds of girls school. Blending in is about collaboration, whether it is with college study groups, sports team, project work teams or working across generations, genders or cultures. Always carry-on clothes when you travel; learn eight to ten words in each language; know when to kiss, bow and shake hands in each culture; know what to bring when visiting each country and eat the local cuisine.” Ms. Roebuck also voiced, “If you blend in and lean in, you will stand out, as a woman, as a friend and as a leader.”

Valedictorian Ingrid Cheung ’18 will be attending Northwestern University in the fall, where she received a full scholarship through the QuestBridge National College Match. She plans on pursuing a double-major in Biomedical Engineering and Asian Languages and Cultures, with a minor in Chemistry. During her years at Saint Joseph Academy, Ingrid was a 2017 LookUp To Cleveland Graduate and she completed the Purple Pathway of the Health Sciences Honors Program. She was a member of the Chinese Club, Environmental Concerns of Students (ECOS), Healthcare Professional

Ingrid served as a Peer Tutor, Academy Ambassador and was in the National Honor Society. She also volunteered at Fairview Hospital and the Cleveland Public Library. Ingrid also received the Four Year Subject Award in both Mathematics and Science. She is a National Merit Commended Scholar and recipient of High Honors and the Ohio Honors Diploma.

Grace Grove ’18 (sister of Annie Grove ’14), the class Salutatorian and Student Address Speaker, will be attending Michigan State University. During her years at Saint Joseph Academy, she interned with NASA, was a member of the Robotics Team, volunteered at St. Augustine’s Hunger Center and the Greater Cleveland Food Bank. Grace’s passion is music and she played in two swing bands outside of school, the Swing Time Big Band and The Stokes Legacy Big Band. Grace is a member of the National Honor Society and a recipient of High Honors and Ohio Honors Diploma.

Claire Forrestal ’18 was the recipient of the Phi Beta Kappa award. In the fall, she will be attending The Ohio State University. Claire was Student Council President, played rugby and soccer, volunteered for Youth Challenge, a member of Model United Nations (UN), Mock Trial Club, National Honor Society and Environmental Concern of Students (ECOS) Club, served on the board of the Photography Club and as a Conflict Mediator. She was instrumental in coordinating the Academy’s peaceful silent stand against gun violence on National Walkout Day. Claire is a recipient of High Honors and Ohio Honors Diploma. Her classmates voted to honor her with the “Outstanding Senior” Award.

After the diplomas were conferred, the class stood and sang the hymn “Joseph, Father.” Keeping with tradition, the graduates then faced each other and sang a heartfelt rendition of “The Lord Bless You and Keep You.” Congratulations, Class of 2018! Sursum corda!

Class of 2018 Students Accepted into 125 Colleges and Universities The 167 Seniors gathered at the College Acceptance Wall to announce and ceremonially place a Jaguar paw print sticker on the college of their choice on May 1, National College Decision Day. This acknowledgement of college choices signaled another step of the Seniors’ journeys to graduation.

The Class of 2018 was accepted into 125 colleges and universities this year, with the most popular choices being The Ohio State University, John Carroll University, Kent State University, Loyola University Chicago, Ohio University and University of Cincinnati. Other prestigious choices included The American University of Paris, Kenyon College, New York University, Rochester Institute of Technology and Washington University in St. Louis.

The Academy is proud of our Seniors as they continue their education after graduation. 68 percent earned a total of $17.1 million in merit-based awards.

Spring Sports Crew Places Two Boats in Top Ten at National Rowing Championships The crew team faced adverse weather conditions which shortened its spring season but still came away with a terrific season.

The highlight of the season was the Jaguar Navy sending a pair of boats to the SRAA National Championships in New Jersey.

The Varsity 4+ (Anya Zurawski ’20, Margaret Grant ’19, Sarah Houser ’19, Julie Panstares ’18 (granddaughter of Coletta Kahl Mulloy ’64) and coxswain Katie Hinton ’19) won their opening heat by two seconds over Langley Crew (McLean, VA) and progressed directly to the Semifinals. In the Semifinal, crew raced a hard-fought race, finishing fifth and progressing to the Petite Final later in the day. In their Petite Final, the Varsity 4+ had a great last race of the year, finishing fourth in the event and tenth in the country.

School (Rosemont, PA). The Lightweight 4+ had another second place finish in the Semifinals, finishing four seconds behind Merion Mercy Academy (Merion Station, PA). In the first National Championship final for any Saint Joseph Academy Lightweight Boat, the crew had a solid race, finishing fifth overall in the country.

The week before at the Midwest Championships, the Jaguars finished with 140 points to trail just New Trier, IL (248) and Skyline, MI (163). The Academy had six boats take home silver medals while one

boat captured a bronze medal.

The Jaguars competed against 50 of the top teams in the region. Despite having a shortened season due to inclement weather, the Jaguars came into the championship ready to race. After the qualifying time trials and Semifinals, the crew qualified 13 of its 14 entries and had all 47 athletes racing in the Grand Finals.

During the season, the Jaguars also captured the team title at the Laddie Cup in Orchard Lake, MI. Congratulations, Jaguar Navy, on an amazing season!

Track & Field Has Numerous Highlights, Competes at States The track & field program had a strong season with several noteworthy performances in 2018. The Jaguars took home the North Coast League Title in its first year of competition. The Academy tallied 151 points to top Archbishop Hoban High School, Walsh Jesuit High School, Beaumont School, Padua Franciscan High School, Lake Catholic High School and NDCL. Bergen ’61) won three events, finished second in another one and was named the North Coast League’s MVP for her efforts.

A few weeks later, the team finished as the OHSAA District Runner-Up. Emma Pesicka ’19 won a District championship in the shot put and also advanced in the discus. Sydney Seymour ’18 and Annie Allen ’20 both advanced to Regionals in the 1600 meter run and 3200 meter run and were also members of the 4x800 relay team, along with Maggie Wagner ’18 (daughter of Karen Lee Wagner P’83) and Amanda Keim ’20, that advanced to Regionals.

Mia Crayton-Prioleau ’19 (long jump) and Natalie Larkman ’18 (pole vault) were also Regional qualifiers. Eight Jaguar athletes advanced to Regionals.

At Regionals, the 4x800 relay team finished in third place to advance to the State meet. In addition, Annie Allen ’20 (1600 meter run) and Sydney Seymour ’18 (3200 meter run) each advanced to the State meet in their individual event. At the State meet, both Annie and Sydney set Academy records. Sydney shattered her own school record in the 3200 meter run with a time of 10:45.56 to finish seventh overall. Annie also set a personal record and school record with a time of 5:00.06 to finish ninth overall. Way to go, Jaguars, on a successful season!

Softball Program Posts 17 Wins

Rugby Advances to State Semifinals

The softball program was a young team in 2018 but still had a very successful season.

The Varsity Jaguars featured two Seniors, Ronain Heath (daughter of Kerrie Carrocia Heath ’88 and sister of Jordan Heath ’17) and Mallory Ambrosio, along with a solid group of underclassmen.

The Jaguars finished their season with a loss in the OHSAA District Semifinals to the North Royalton Bears. For the second straight season, the Jaguars knocked off the Strongsville Mustangs in the Sectional final round to advance to Districts.

For the second straight season, Ronain Heath ’18 earned Honorable Mention AllOhio while also being named to the All-District first team. Also earning All-District awards were Andrea Horrocks ’19 and Maya Johnson ’21 (sister of Kaylyn Johnson ’17) who received Honorable Mention status. Congratulations on a winning season, Jaguars!

The rugby program finished its season with a loss in the State Semifinals this year, ending a remarkable streak of five straight State Championships. The Jaguars once again played a challenging Regional schedule as 10 of the Academy’s 17 opponents this season were from outside the state of Ohio. The Jaguars finished 9-8 on the season highlighted by their third place finish at the Midwest Tournament.

Lacrosse Advances in OHSAA Tournament

In just its third year of existence, the lacrosse program has made a name for itself. The Jaguars won six games in 2016 and seven games last year. This year the Jaguars finished their season 13-4 highlighted by an 11-9 win over Magnificat in the OHSAA Regional Tournament. The Academy also posted impressive wins over Toledo St. Ursula, Bay High School, Gilmour Academy, Strongsville High School and Westlake High School. The team’s captains, Kristin Nauman ’18, Anna Fricker ’18 (sister of Emily Fricker ’09), Isabella Mastroianni ’18 and Lucy Casper ’18, worked tirelessly to motivate the team both on and off the field.

The Jaguars were led by Ella Calleri ’19 who was selected to the All-Region Second Team while Emily Langel ’20 (daughter of Judy Knis Langel ’88 and granddaughter of Joy Bejbl Knis ’56) earned Honorable Mention All-Region recognition. Ella Calleri led the Jaguars with a single-season record 68 goals while Emily Langel set a school record with 16 assists on the season. Ella scored her 150th career goal this season while Emily went over the 50 career goal mark. Goalie Danielle Smith ’18 was outstanding as well, finishing with 346 career saves over three seasons. Way to go, Lacrosse, on a record-setting season!

Erin is committed to nurturing and inspiring wellness in body, mind and spiritual activities. At Trinity High School, she revised the curriculum for Senior Physical Education classes to include units on self-defense, yoga, mindfulness, biking and swimming.

In addition to teaching a full schedule of classes and serving as department head, Erin was the Head Advisor to the Ski and Snowboard Club, Assistant Coach for the Girls’ and Boys’ Cross Country team, served on the school’s concussion committee, assisted with the girls’ basketball team, drill team tryouts and musicals. She advised Advanced Physical Education students participating in the MetroHealth Teen Brain Health Competition, which involves creating videos to educate fellow students on subjects affecting mental health. Erin has served as the Dance Presidential Chairperson and Vice Chairperson for the Ohio Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (OAHPERD).

Katherine specializes in Pediatric Optometry and founded her practice’s Vision Therapy program, the only program of its kind in Monmouth County, New Jersey. This program caters to children with vision problems that impact their learning in some way. This therapy allows students to learn more efficiently and teaches them coping mechanisms to enhance their learning. As an initiative to support pediatric eye care, she tests children to determine if they have a visual information processing disorder. Identifying this issue early on in life allows her to assist patients in their learning journey. The Vision Therapy Program at Red Bank Eye also assists the elderly, stroke victims and those with traumatic brain injuries. Her professional memberships include the American Optometric Association, College of Optometrists in Vision Development and Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity. In her free time, Katherine is committed to her Ukrainian heritage, serving on the Ukrainian Scouting Camp as an executive board member and has planned and participated in missions trips to Haiti to focus on eye health.

Technology is a high-pay, rapid-growth industry where women and minorities are dramatically underrepresented, and Tori has made it her personal mission to make sure that no one is left behind. She strives to mentor others with grace and compassion. In the time Tori has been a professional programmer, she has become an outstanding leader with Hyland Software. She is a volunteer instructor for the Hy-Tech Club, serves as a coordinator and speaker for the Hyland Women in Tech conference and is a conference speaker for the Heartifacts Conference. Taking that mission to heart after graduation, she went to Biloxi, Mississippi to help with post-Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. After earning her Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Rachel served as a medical missions volunteer on a trip to India with Sewa International. She later volunteered with International Volunteer HQ on a three-week trip to teach children medical information in Bali, Indonesia. As a registered nurse, she takes care of people from all walks of life without hesitation and practices empathetic justice. In addition to working 12+ hour days, Rachel is currently pursuing a Master of Science in Nursing with hopes to become an adult/gerontology nurse practitioner.

Darcy is a natural leader who has received many accolades. While at John Carroll University, she received the Richard W. Clancy Outstanding Senior English Major award and was recognized for the Second Highest MFAT Score. In 2016, Darcy was honored with the Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching. In recent years, she has turned her challenging cancer diagnosis into becoming a champion for colon cancer patients. Diagnosed with colorectal cancer shortly after graduating with her second Master’s degree, Darcy organized her network into the largest team in Cleveland’s Undy RunWalk for Colon Cancer, raising more than $15,000 for the cause.

She served as the Keynote Speaker for the 2017 Cleveland Undy RunWalk Survivor Ceremony. Darcy also joined the board of the Colorectal Cancer Alliance’s Never 2 Young Campaign, where she is able to use her research and communication skills to contribute to a cause that affects her intimately. Through her work and involvement all conducted while undergoing treatment, Darcy is a change agent.

Claire learns, works and lives in a way that reflects her core belief set, taking her causes to heart by learning ways to correct environmental and human injustices. Serving the dear neighbor took Claire to Montana as a service member with the Jesuit Volunteer Corps. Once she arrived, Claire immersed herself in service, working with women and children who had survived domestic abuse. Claire is a certified Montana Master Naturalist and in her own home, she embraces the idea of living in a sustainable community. She and her roommates work to eliminate unnecessary consumption and challenge one another to uphold

their commitment to the environment, using only what is necessary and recyclable. Claire is an editorial board member for Camas Magazine. She is currently completing two graduate degrees, one in Environmental Studies, with a focus on educating others about the natural world, and another in Public Administration. Therese has taken initiative in her profession by electing to be a voice for her patients. Therese goes above and beyond to work with patients, doctors and insurers to determine what the best options are for each individual and how to best approach their care plan. She is able to effectively communicate with her team and managers what the growing issues are among prescription problems, patient needs and industry trends. Through her character of empathetic justice, personal integrity and emerging wisdom, Therese is slowly making strides in systemic change within her field. In 2008, Therese’s father, also a pharmacist, passed away from pancreatic cancer. To honor his memory, Therese began volunteering for Project Purple, a nonprofit organization whose focus is to raise awareness, support patients and their families and fund research efforts.

She currently serves the head principal at Clara E. Westropp Elementary School and is one of the youngest head principals in the district. Krystle completed a rigorous program called the Aspiring Principals program offered by CMSD. Through her work as a Research Assistant at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU), in coordination with the Ohio Alliance to End Sexual Violence and the CWRU Begun Center for Violence Prevention Research and Education, Maggie applies her background as an advocate in the non-profit sector. She uses her skills to process sensitive data, inform the public about sexual assault and domestic violence, and secure the funding and resources to ensure that the most vulnerable and marginalized populations see justice. In Clare’s work as an Occupational Therapist, she shows empathetic care for those she serves. Clare’s heart for helping others doesn’t stop in her career; she volunteers her time to several organizations including Camp TimberNook and Gigi’s Playhouse. In addition to volunteering and working full-time, Clare also works part-time at the Harrison Center for Children, providing her services on an outpatient basis to promote increased independence. During her time at Xavier University, Clare volunteered her time and resources to provide occupational therapy services for individuals in Guatemala. Maureen Wolf ’09 Third Grade Teacher, Avon Heritage Elementary Bachelor of Science in Child and Family Studies, Ohio University Master of Arts in Education – Licensed Intervention Specialist (Mild/Moderate Educational Needs) and Early Child Education, Baldwin Wallace University Resident of Rocky River, OH

Maureen’s compassion for others has led her to volunteer her time to make the dreams of children with life-threatening illnesses come true as a Wish Maker volunteer for Make-A-Wish Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana. While earning her graduate degree, Maureen volunteered with Youth Challenge and learned American Sign Language through evening classes. She showcases compassionate leadership in her classroom as a third grade teacher, spending countless hours after school helping students with homework and counseling them on their problems. Maureen is not only a teacher to these students but a mother, nurse, therapist and friend.

She encourages her students to consider becoming scientists and engineers through her “Engineering Hour” initiative each week. Veteran teachers have applauded Maureen on her ideas implemented into the classroom and empathy for her students.

”25 Under 35“ Honoree Leads Students and Alumnae in Service This summer, 15 Saint Joseph Academy women, both alumnae and current students, had the opportunity to all work together at St. Augustine Rainbow Camp in Tremont. Friends at 20th Annual Scholarship Luncheon Support Students

A

lumnae, friends and Academy supporters enjoyed an afternoon together in early May for the annual Spring Scholarship Luncheon at Westwood Country Club. The afternoon included a reflection from student speaker Molly Powers ’18 (daughter of Maureen Smith Powers ’83,

granddaughter of Margaret Ames Smith ’49, sister of Callie ’12 and Grace Powers ’14), who spoke about her time and lifelong connection to Saint Joseph Academy and the alumnae community. Net proceeds from the luncheon totaled almost $15,000 to the Scholarship Fund.

he Tax Cuts and Jobs Act make significant changes in tax rates and

deductions. Fortunately, provisions in the new tax code impact charitable giving in favorable ways for our friends and supporters who will continue to enjoy important tax benefits.

We encourage you to contact your advisors to help identify opportunities or to answer any questions you may have relating to your specific tax situation.

Increase charitable gifts to benefit from itemizing deductions.

If the total of your itemized deductions is going to be close to the new higher standard deduction amount, consider giving a little more to Saint Joseph Academy so your charitable deduction helps you exceed the standard deduction amount and you can receive the tax benefits of itemizing.

Make gifts of appreciated securities. You can still save capitalgain taxes by giving appreciated securities owned for more than a year, a key part of tax law that has not changed.

Make retirement plan gifts. A simple and smart way to support our mission is to designate Saint Joseph Academy as beneficiary of a retirement plan. While loved ones are subject to paying income tax on retirement plan gifts they may receive, charities are not. Thus, you can help your loved ones save taxes by giving them other assets and gifting retirement plan assets to Saint Joseph Academy.

Make an IRA rollover gift. The tax-free IRA Charitable Rollover allows donors age 70 1/2 or over to directly transfer up to $100,000 each year to Saint Joseph Academy and count it towards their required minimum distribution. Although there is not tax deduction, the distribution is excluded from income for federal tax purposes.

Make a gift that costs nothing now. A bequest in a will or trust continues to be a way to make a significant gift that costs nothing now. There are many ways to design a bequest in order to best meet family priorities and support Saint Joseph Academy.

Three Families Host Golf Outings to Support Students Through Endowed Scholarships The 8th Annual Rosie Sandoval “Swing By” Golf Scramble and Dinner is being held on Saturday, September 1, at the Hickory Nut Golf Course and Royal Crest Golf Course in Columbia Station. The event starts at noon. The Sandoval family honors the memory of their mother Rosemary Henry Sandoval ’54 by adding the proceeds to the endowed memorial scholarship established in her name. In addition to a day on the golf course, participants will also enjoy a dinner provided by Rosemary’s son, Ricardo Sandoval, chef/owner of Fat Cats Restaurant in Tremont.

The Lisa Hagan Berry ’81 Memorial Golf Outing, benefiting The Lisa Hagan Berry ’81 Endowed Memorial Scholarship, is being held on Saturday, September 8 at the Springvale Golf Course in North Olmsted. The two-person scramble will begin with a shotgun start, followed by a delicious dinner. The Lisa Hagan Berry ’81 Endowed Scholarship was established to continue Lisa’s commitment to education, the value of family and aiding those in need.

The Harky Open, a four-person scramble, is also being held on Saturday, September 8 at Bob-O-Link Golf Course in Avon. This event is produced by the family of Marge McNeeley Harkness ’60, in memory of her husband, Tom. Proceeds support the Marge McNeeley Harkness ’60 and Tom Harkness Memorial Endowed Scholarship, which supports students who are daughters of firefighters. The event begins with a shotgun start and concludes with a clambake and steak dinner.

1960s

Shirley Rieker N’64 recently published a non-fiction book, What About Me? A Caregiver’s Journey To Surviving Alzheimer’s, which has been reviewed in the Sun Newspaper by Sam Boyer and the Helping Hands, published by the Hands Foundation, a newspaper designed for senior citizens in Medina County.

Jeanne Gallagher ’69 has joined the Xavier Society for the Blind Advisory Group to help select content for their publications in braille and audio, to advise them on the best use of technology and potential new initiatives. She is also a braille client of Xavier Society for the Blind. Jeanne received her undergraduate degree in Music Literature at St. Mary’s College, Notre Dame and received a Master of Music in Performance from Kent State University.

Her musical expertise led her to positions in the Cleveland Women’s Orchestra and Cleveland Philharmonic. Jeanne is a member of St. Patrick’s Parish choir and serves as the music minister for the charismatic prayer group at Our Lady of Angels Church.

Rebecca Dessoffy Bennett ’91 was recently featured in Attorney at Law magazine as the Attorney of the Month. The article featured how Rebecca’s education at Saint Joseph Academy inspired her to achieve her dreams.

As a member of Saint Joseph Academy’s Board of Directors, she has seen firsthand how the Academy has shaped her legal career.

Sue Leek Biggs ’86 (sister of Natalie LeekNelson ’85 and mother of Mara Biggs ’10) was named the Assistant Superintendent for the Diocese of Cleveland Office of Catechetical Formation and Education.

Mary Patricia Norton Rhea ’87 recently led her family’s business, Norton Industries, Inc., to win a Weatherhead 100 Award. This award was established in 1988 to celebrate Northeast Ohio’s spirit of entrepreneurship and those companies leading the way.

Jordan Biagini ’08 married Chris O’Neil on May 19, 2018 in Akron, Ohio.

Beth Gaertner ’08 was named Program Director of St. Crispin’s Conference Center and Camp in Seminole, Oklahoma. She is in charge of recruitment and enrollment for summer camp, hiring and training of both staff and counselors, designing and distributing all marketing materials. Beth works directly with the Diocesan Christian

Formation Director to develop Christian formation for summer camp and serves as an Assistant Director to host conference center guests.

Kelly Heilman ’08 is a Ph.D Candidate in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Notre Dame. Her research focuses on the impacts of land use, climate, CO2 changes on both tree drought sensitivity and biome stability of temperate savannas and forests. To complete this research, Kelly uses a combination of historical vegetation datasets, tree ring methods and stable isotope geochemistry. She is taking her research on trees to speak at a conference in Bhutan.

Mary Kate Caja ’13 married Tom Blankenship on May 26, 2018.

Ashley Santora ’14 will be entering the Mercedarian Order in August. The order was founded in Mexico City by the Venerable Maria del Refugio Aguilar in 1910. Today, the Sisters continue to respond to their charism in the Church by providing children and youth with a Christian education in schools and catechetical centers. They also visit the sick and the imprisoned and assist in various parish and diocesan ministries.

Sarah Johanek ’15 is a member of the USA U23 Rowing Team where she won gold competing for Team USA at the World Championships in Poland in July. She was accepted to train at the USRowing National Training Center in Princeton, New Jersey.

Sarah was chosen to compete at the Henley Royal Regatta in London, one of the most wellknown and prestigious Sarah Johanek ’15 regattas in the world.

She is a student-athlete who rows at Rutgers University, where she earned her second straight First Team All-Big Team selection.

Sarah is a rising senior majoring in Public Health.

Fall Open House - Sunday, October 21 Prospective parents/guardians and students are invited to attend Saint Joseph Academy’s Fall Open House on Sunday, October 21, 1-4 p.m.

Student Ambassadors will give tours of the campus and are available to answer questions about the educational and extracurricular opportunities at Saint Joseph Academy. It’s a great opportunity to learn more about our Makerspace, Health Sciences Honors Program, our new Engineering and Design Honors Program or our meet with our faculty and see a demonstration of our Anatomage Table. Saint Joseph Academy UPDATE

• Shadowing begins on September 17 and runs through November 29.

Students should register online.

• High School Placement Test (HSPT): Required for eighth grade students interested in applying for admission to the Class of 2022: • Saturday, October 27 and Saturday, November 3, both tests administered at Saint Joseph Academy. Students may register for the date of their choice. Results from this test will be considered when reviewing student applications for admission and scholarships. The test will also be offered on Saturday, January 5, 2019 for admission consideration only.

• Optional HSPT Preparation Class: Offered by Seeley Test Pros at Saint Joseph Academy on Saturday, September 29.

• Visit Day for 5th, 6th and 7th graders on Friday, October 12.
