– Pope Saint John Paul II Dear Alumnae, Parents and Friends of Saint Joseph Academy, Spring has definitely sprung on Rocky River Drive!

The warmer weather has students spilling outside: lunching on the Scholars’ Porch, photographing the change of season for their Digital Photography class, practicing lacrosse on Rawlings Field and sharing time with friends while sitting in the Adirondack chairs on our beautiful campus. In a blink, the school year will be over.

What a year it has been to date, one filled with many special opportunities for our school community! It isn’t every day that you get to meet a Hollywood legend, and it was something very special to spend time with Tom Hanks in December.

Senior Jonae Williams represented herself and Saint Joseph Academy so well that day. Those of us lucky enough to spend time with the legendary actor (including me!) won’t soon forget that special opportunity. Junior Marisleysis Gonzalez had the incredible opportunity to witness multiple surgeries dressed in hospital scrubs during her Junior Professional Shadow experience. More than sixty students and a dozen faculty members had amazing opportunities to travel during spring break to places like Milan, Paris, Barcelona, South Carolina and New Orleans on five different trips. Other students had the opportunity to travel to our nation’s capital to be a voice for the voiceless at the annual March for Life on a cold January morning. Students interested in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, mathematics) enjoyed opportunities to work with professionals in these fields. You can read about these amazing opportunities in the pages of this magazine. All the while, our students are gifted to be surrounded by committed adults who believe in them and model the charism of the Sisters of the Congregation of St. Joseph – “that all may be one.” Oh, it is indeed a good time to be a Jaguar!

I count myself immensely blessed to be among the young women of Saint Joseph Academy and the adult community dedicated to their success. In this world today, marked by division and partisanship, I am surrounded by hope: hope for the future of our world that these 725 young women embody. We are forming women of unifying love: women who will serve the dear neighbor without distinction, who will act with empathetic justice, who will commit to emerging wisdom through their lifelong learning, and who will be guided by personal integrity.

English philosopher Bernard Williams once said, “The day the Lord created hope was probably the same day he created Spring.” This spring, the young women of Saint Joseph Academy fill me with hope. Thank you for the support you provide, so that we can offer these important opportunities to our students.

Jonae Williams ’17 Interviews Tom Hanks

I

n December, 13 students attended an event at Tri-C Community College featuring two-time Academy Award® winner Tom Hanks. The “Behind the Camera” event was sponsored by the Greater Cleveland Film Commission. Tom Hanks, who began his professional acting career in Northeast Ohio with the Great Lakes Theater (formerly Great Lakes Shakespeare Festival), shared his journey and advice for pursuing a career, both in front and behind the camera.

Tom Hanks has a unique tie to Saint Joseph Academy. Distinguished Alumna Mary Fournier Bill ’42, also a former Saint Joseph Academy Drama teacher, was the first full-time employee for the Great Lakes Shakespeare Theater. She created grants to underwrite youth tickets, and she went on to become the Managing Director. It was here she met young Tom Hanks, with whom she remained in contact until her passing.

demonstrating her articulation and poise at a local speaker event, Jonae impressed event attendee, Ivan Schwarz, President of the Greater Cleveland Film Commission (a co-producer with Hanks on Band of Brothers). Mr. Schwarz invited Jonae to serve as the moderator. Jonae held a one-on-one discussion with Hanks in front of nearly 800 students from 58 Northeast Ohio high schools and colleges. Hanks shared thoughts about his role as the voice of Woody in the Toy Story movie franchise, keeping his privacy in Hollywood and what he’s reading.

Questions were submitted in advance by students.

“The day came to interview Tom Hanks, and I was nervous,” shared Jonae Williams ’17. “When I met him, I went in for a handshake, but he gave me a hug. He asked about my plans for the future. It was both nerve-wracking and amazing at the same time. I learned a valuable lesson from this experience: Always show your best side because you never know who is watching and what opportunities will arise.”

President Mrs. Mary Ann CorriganDavis ’71 stated, “Jonae Williams was so poised while interviewing Tom Hanks. We are all so proud of her! Afterwards, Jonae was joined by the 12 other Saint Joseph Academy students backstage. I so enjoyed seeing them interact with this famous actor. It was an experience they will long remember!”

While backstage, students from the Academy asked Tom Hanks to

reenact the social media challenge “Andy’s Coming!” from Toy Story, and he eagerly agreed. The challenge is where a person merely yells “Andy’s coming!” and everyone in the room who is in motion acts lifeless and drops to the ground, like the toys in Toy Story. The Academy’s “Andy’s Coming!” challenge went viral on social media.

Olivia Heidorf ’17, who was among the group of students who attended the event, shared: “It was a surreal experience. For Mr. Hanks to address us as students was inspiring. He empowered us by reminiscing on the times he sat in our chairs and how we all have the tools to pursue our dreams.

He is larger than life and is a testament to the capability of true talent. He is truly a genuine man. I am amazed I was able to attend, and it was done all because of the resources at Saint Joseph Academy.”

Performing Arts Programs Continue to Flourish L-R: Seniors Alyssa Kissel, Carol Hall, Jenna Prahst and Maya Cundiff

T

he Performing Arts programs continue to flourish. This academic year, 230 students are currently enrolled in the Performing Arts program, partaking in 21 different courses with three teachers, which puts the participating average at 30 percent of the student body. “Music affects everyone’s life in some shape, form or capacity every day. Classes in the performing arts feed into the other classes students may take, which help enhance their skill set,” observed Performing Arts-Vocal Music Department Chair Miss Kathleen Cooper.

The evidence is high: through a six-year period, the jazz band has grown from 12 to 40 student musicians, and the orchestra has grown from 0 to 20 student musicians under the direction of Performing Arts-Instrumental Music Director Mr. David Mumford.

The results include honors such as The Academy Chorale singing at the Cleveland Cavaliers game in December, Fairview Hospital’s ‘Trees of Hope,’ Great Lakes Theater, Severance Hall, a Cleveland Monsters game and a Cleveland Indians game (just to highlight a few). The OMEA (Ohio Music Education Association) competitions recognize the talent and dedication of these students, which have resulted in 21 musicians receiving Superior (the highest rating) and Outstanding ratings 2

in the OMEA District 4 contest. The Academy Chorale received a Superior Rating at the Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) District 4 Adjudicated Event. This is the highest rating and qualifies them to go to the State Large Group Competition.

Students also have the opportunities to participate in cultural activities via field trips, which enhance the curriculum and inspire students. In January, the Senior class traveled to Severance Hall for a performance by the Cleveland Orchestra. The annual Severance field trip for Seniors is integral to Saint Joseph Academy’s efforts to create lifelong appreciation of the arts and the world-class cultural institutions our region provides.

The Band and Orchestra held its Winter Concert in January, which featured the Orchestra, Jazz Band and Concert Band.

Each school year, Saint Joseph Academy also hosts two productions directed by Drama Director Ms. Anne Chriszt.

“Our performing arts program is accessible to all students: from beginners to career musicians. We meet students at their level and abilities. This allows us to work with all students equally, not just with students that come to us with experience or especially gifted. The performing arts program offers music in many forms: jazz,

art song, pop, Broadway, classical and more.

Students are able to experience a diverse repertoire,” shared Miss Cooper.

“Many students become musically involved outside of Saint Joseph Academy as well. We encourage our students to audition for groups such as the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Chorus and try to keep them aware of extracurricular opportunities that may be a good fit for them,” stated Miss Cooper. This encouragement has resulted in four students Maya Cundiff ’17 (sister of Kendra Cundiff ’16), Elise Scullin ’17, Hannah Rutkowski ’19 and Emma Rosberil ’20 being selected to sing with the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Chorus, three students (Jocelyn Perkins ’18, Emily Austin ’20 and Julia Ham ’18) accepted into the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Honors Choir, Allison Sheehan ’18 was accepted into the West Shore Chorale Honors Choir and Liz Forrey ’17 (sister of Samantha Forrey ’15) won the Cleveland Youth Wind Symphony Concerto Competition.

“Experiencing art in all its forms teaches students to take time and be thorough in how they observe the world,” shared Principal Mr. Jeff Sutliff. “This attention to detail is invaluable in the development of critical thinking skills, which can be applied to other course work.”

New Assistant Principal Shares Passion for Supporting Students and Teachers

Student Marches in Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade On Thanksgiving Day, Natalie Bauman ’18 marched in the Colorguard with the Macy’s Great American Marching Band, comprised of 225 students from every state. The Colorguard interprets the music that the marching band is playing via the synchronized work of flags. Natalie also founded the Saint Joseph Academy Winter Guard Club two years ago.

“I began the audition process a year ago,” she shared. “It included a series of video auditions to show basic skills and selfchoreography, as well as a written portion.”

I

t is midway through Assistant Principal Miss Megan Gaffney’s first year at Saint Joseph Academy, and she has been diligent in supporting both teachers and students at the Academy.

“It is an honor to have joined the Saint Joseph Academy community as the Assistant Principal,” shared Miss Gaffney. “As the Assistant Principal, I am involved with supporting the teachers and helping students in their academic pursuits, especially those who are having difficulty in the classroom.”

Miss Gaffney received her Bachelor of Arts from John Carroll University and a Master in Educational Administration from Kent State University. She has served in a wide range of leadership capacities at Seton Catholic School in Hudson, Ohio, and taught social studies, reading and religion since 2007. Active in the high school youth ministry at St. Mary Catholic Church in Hudson, she was the recipient of the Hudson Community First Youth Advocate Award in 2013. In addition, Miss Gaffney coached high school and middle school girls’ lacrosse as well as swimming at a club level.

“One of the most rewarding parts of my job at Saint Joseph Academy is working with

the teachers, especially the new ones. It is wonderful to see how they transform throughout the school year to be an active member in the Saint Joseph Academy community,” recalled Miss Gaffney. “I also enjoy working with students, and I love when students stop in my office to say hello and to share their success, both in and out of the classroom. To help myself get acquainted with the community, I went on the Towpath Retreat with Seniors at the beginning of the academic year, which helped me become more familiar with students, faculty and the culture of Saint Joseph Academy.”

Miss Gaffney’s goals are to continue to develop the International Baccalaureate® (IB) Middle Years Programme (IB MYP), maintain the Academy’s Catholic and Congregation of St. Joseph identity, as well as continue to cultivate relationships with teachers, students and parents.

“Miss Gaffney has demonstrated throughout her career that she is missiondriven, hardworking and highly intelligent.

She understands that strong relationships are fundamental to everything we do. We are blessed to have her join our community,” shared Principal Mr. Jeff Sutliff.

Because members of the band come from every state, their only full-group practice time was intensive sessions throughout the week leading up to the parade. The group performed as they marched in the parade and at Herald Square, which is televised.

“My favorite part of the week was marching in the parade,” shared Natalie. “There are no words to explain the feeling of walking through the streets of New York under the huge balloons and beside spectators from all over the world! It was an experience I will never forget.”

PRINCIPAL’S CORNER: “The work of today is the history of tomorrow, and we are its makers.”

– Juliette Gordon Low When the six women who later became the Sisters of St. Joseph gathered in 17th century France, they set out with the support of Father Jean-Pierre Médaille, SJ, to serve the dear neighbor by doing any work of which women were capable. These first Sisters embraced the art and business of lacemaking because it was the primary industry of the small city of Le Puyen-Velay where they lived. They taught other women how to make lace so they could become more financially self-sufficient, and Father Medaille called their plans for a religious community “a little design.”

Part of the beauty of lace is how from inspiration, effort, technique and tools, “a little design” springs forth – a beautiful, functional work of art based on 4

mathematical principles and patterns. In a similar way, “the little design” of these six Sisters continues to spring forth through the international work of the Congregation of St. Joseph, including Saint Joseph Academy.

Walking through Saint Joseph Academy, I am reminded of these lace-making Sisters of St. Joseph in Le Puy-en-Velay. Like the sisters, our students draw on inspiration, apply what they know and offer up their work in service to the “dear neighbor.” Applying principles of mathematics, art, design, entrepreneurship, collaboration and technology, they are spinning beautiful and functional work of their own in our Makerspace.

For example, in an introductory Engineering class, students reprogram inexpensive electronic toys for use by children with disabilities, providing a cost-effective alternative to custom-made toys. One art student designed and created fabric covers for the machines that dispense intravenous medicine to children, making the machine less intimidating for the patients.

Visitors to the Academy often remark

on how confident and comfortable students are with the vast array of educational technologies at hand. A Saint Joseph Academy student of today has lived her whole life in a world connected by the Internet and powered by computers. She is as familiar with a Chromebook laptop as her parents were with textbooks and three-ring binders. On a daily basis, she uses technology to access and organize information, collaborate and communicate in ways that prior generations could only dream. Observing the students of Saint Joseph Academy, one looks forward to a future where the creative capacities of young women have been fully leveraged with educational and career opportunities.

Our students are making a world where the definition of “any work of which women are capable” includes careers in science, engineering, medicine, art and design, while the virtue of “service to the dear neighbor” endures.

STEAM-Related Courses on the Rise

Emily Sonby ’18 increases weight on her group’s retaining wall

S

aint Joseph Academy continues to expand its STEAM-related course offerings to provide a wide range of learning opportunities for our young women. Single gender education helps students focus and excel because “girls’ schools create a culture of achievement in which academic progress is of great importance, and the discovery and development of a girls’ individual potential is paramount,” states the National Coalition of Girls Schools (NCGS). Education in an all-girls environment, such as Saint Joseph Academy, gives young women a boost in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) because there are no barriers to learning. The focus is on achieving their full potential.

“We recognize that an emphasis on STEAM curriculum is vital in today’s hightechnology, global economy. For the young women at our school, we continue to create courses of study to help them succeed in science, technology, health sciences, the arts and mathematics during their four years at Saint Joseph Academy and beyond,” shared Principal Mr. Jeff Sutliff.

Students are inspired to take lessons learned in the classroom and integrate technology, a major proponent utilized at the Academy. The Makerspace, a hands-

on innovation area, enables students to experiment and apply learning from multiple subjects – such as designing artwork on computers to producing engineering prototypes on a 3-D (three-dimensional) printer. Graphic Design II classes used the equipment to create their own clocks.

“Students are given specifications, mechanisms and the clock hands,” stated Visual Arts Department Chair Mrs. Beth Pleban. “More than half of the class opted to make a nontraditional clock. Some used the laser cutter to make a 3-D design while others etched their design. The Makerspace is a large component of the work students are creating because of the Adobe graphic software used in their Graphic Design classes.”

Students in Math teacher Mr. Christopher Kenny’s Honors Geometry class were paired together for a parallel lines city project to complete in the Makerspace.

“Students designed a city street map in the CorelDraw program. After they designed the street map, they engraved their city maps on wood,” explained Mr. Kenny.

“After the maps were engraved, the students added three-dimensional buildings designed in the Makerspace to various street corners on their maps. Because of this assignment, students were able to connect engineering to mathematics.”

With the help of the international organization Transportation YOU, Engineering students in Mr. John Lesko’s Honors Topics in Pre-Engineering and Programming class had a two-week unit on transportation engineering, taught by instructors from the Women’s Transportation Seminar (WTS) International, including Structural Engineer Lisa Abraham Hoekenga ’00.

The students built two small-scale mechanically stabilized earth walls (MSEW), walls which were created with different reinforcement strategies and loaded them to failure. With this assignment, students learned to explain the function of a retaining wall, describe how a mechanically reinforced wall is constructed, recognize the lateral stresses that are caused by an applied vertical force, describe forces acting against a wall and understand that reinforcing soil strengthens it.

“The national average for females majoring in Engineering in college is 1.6 percent. At Saint Joseph Academy, we have 14 Seniors who will be majoring in Engineering in college,” shared Science teacher Mrs. Mary Ellen Foley Scott ’76.

“That is 8.4 percent of the Class of 2017, so Saint Joseph Academy has girls majoring in Engineering at more than five times the national average.”

‘Untangled’ Presentation Helps Parents Navigate Daughters’ Pivotal Adolescent Years

S

aint Joseph Academy School Counselor Mrs. Adriane Hicks and Instructional Coach Mrs. Kerry Grady thought Dr. Lisa Damour’s message about raising teenage daughters would resonate with Saint Joseph Academy parents. Therefore, in February, they

brought a special presentation to the Academy featuring the New York Times best-selling author Lisa Damour, Ph.D., entitled “Untangled: Guiding Teenage Girls Through the Seven Transitions in Adulthood.” Dr. Damour’s discussion highlighted developmental transitions that turn girls into grown-ups and how parents can form a happier, healthier relationship with daughters during their teenage years.

Dr. Damour’s spoke about the seven phases of adolescence. Dr. Damour provided valuable insights, such as “teenagers pull away in increments;” when discussing popularity of their peers, encouraging parents and guardians to ask their daughter, “Is this person popular like people like her or popular because people are scared of her?”Dr. Damour shared that teenagers are not addicted to technology, they are addicted to each other. Dr. Damour encouraged parents to have a sense of humor about themselves, “otherwise, it is really difficult to parent a teenager.” She also encouraged attendees to not be alarmed by teenage emotions, rather, be a listening ear for their daughter.

Named National Merit Scholarship Finalist Margaret “Maggie” Seikel ’17 (daughter of Shannon Hughes Seikel ’85) has advanced to the Finals for the National Merit Scholarship competition!

Maggie met the requirements to advance to the finals of the National Merit Scholarship Program competition, which includes maintaining an outstanding academic record throughout high school, an endorsement by her high school principal and earning an SAT score confirming an earlier performance on the qualifying test.

The National Merit Finalists will be considered for the National Merit Scholarships to be offered in 2017, and the scholarship awards were announced in the beginning of March.

While still undecided, Maggie has been formally accepted to the honors programs at Georgetown University and The Ohio State University.

Saint Joseph Academy UPDATE

Students Help Others in New Orleans Twelve students spent their spring break in New Orleans, Louisiana to live the CSJ charism and to experience the culture of the city. The students, accompanied by three chaperones participated in “weaving one heart” service projects for the week.

The group stayed at the Church of the Annunciation in the Broadmoor neighborhood of New Orleans. Activities included helping clear the grounds at Church of the Annunciation, preparing for the Church of the Annunciation’s 173rd Anniversary celebration dinner and serving at the Love and Action Food Bank. In the evenings, students explored the historic parts of the city.

Students spent one day with our sister school, Saint Joseph’s Academy in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, to shadow students, tour their campus and enjoy a Louisiana style cookout.

“There are two things that stand out for students,” shared Miss Pungitore.

“First, they are shocked when they see how much recovery still is needed in New Orleans because of Hurricane Katrina.

It has been almost twelve years, and there is still so much work that needs to be done to return the area to its normal state. The second piece is that students are immersed in the culture – the food, language, architecture and more. This is unlike any service trip they have ever experienced.”

Mitchell is a former anchor and national correspondent for CBS News.

Mitchell asked Mary Ann Corrigan-Davis questions about her upbringing, her career, her legacy and her faith.

“The biggest reason I wanted the job of President of Saint Joseph Academy was because I wanted to give back to a place that gave so much to me,” shared Mrs. Corrigan-Davis.

Students Provide Voices for the Marginalized in March for Life Rally In the annual “March for Life” in Washington, D.C. in January, more than 30 students attended the event, where individuals gathered in prayer and unity.

“People from across the nation with various backgrounds gathered to be a voice for the voiceless. The March for Life stands for those who are the most forgotten and marginalized in our world today,” shared Riley Justice ’17.

Cultural Trips Provide Global Perspective and Cultural Appreciation

I

n March, forty-nine students and seven faculty embarked on a ten-day journey across Italy. The group started in Milan and then went on to visit the famous cities of Venice, Florence, Verona, Rome, Sorrento and Pompeii. Some of the landmarks they visited included St. Mark’s Square, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi, the Trevi Fountain, Vatican museums, the Sistine Chapel, St. Peter’s Basilica and the Colosseum. The group celebrated Italian Mass at Il Duomo Basilica.

“I decided to go on the trip to France because I’ve taken French since elementary school, and I have always wanted to see the Eiffel Tower and walk the hallways of Versailles,” – Molly Powers ’18 (daughter of Maureen Smith Powers ’83, sister of Callie Powers ’12, Grace Powers ’14 and granddaughter of Margaret Ames Smith ’49).

“I loved seeing all of the history because some of the buildings were more than 800 years old. With this trip, we were able to experience all of Italy in ten days. It was an experience I will never forget,” – Catherine (Cat) Gallagher ’17 Students get a behind the scenes look at Rungis Market outside Paris, the world’s largest wholesale market for fresh produce.

Seventeen girls and three faculty members set out for Paris, France during spring break. This trip had many opportunities to learn about and explore France, including visiting Champs Elysees, the Opera House, Loire Valley, the Louvre, Normandy, the D-Day Museum and the Eiffel Tower. Students also took a French cooking class. It was a jam-packed ten days traveling through the cities of France – so much to much to do with so little time!

Opens Worlds of Opportunity

E

ach spring, the Junior class experiences the real world of prospective careers, thanks to our Junior Professional Shadowing program. During the three-day experience, coordinated by College Counselors Ms. Susan Emmerich and Ms. Maria Mueller, Juniors spend time with a sponsor in a potential career or passion of their choice. This year, more than 170 Juniors were paired with a variety of professionals, including marine biologists, structural engineers, lawyers and forensic examiners.

Students keep journals detailing their experiences and sentiments on the professionals observed. This career exploration helps students decide vocations of interest or hone in their post-secondary education selections as they begin their college search process.

Here are some highlights from the 2017 Junior Professional Shadowing experience.

Elizabeth Maxwell

Elizabeth spent her Junior Professional Shadowing experience at the Greater Cleveland Aquarium.

“Ever since I was young, I have been interested in nature and marine life,” shared Elizabeth. “I have always wanted to be a marine biologist. I want to be able to focus on diving and marine biology so that I will be able to interact with the animals.

For my Junior Professional Shadowing experience, I prepared food for the aquatic life.

While we did this, I had the opportunity to touch a jellyfish and a stingray.

When I went behind the scenes, I saw a pregnant stingray and how they filter the water so they can reuse it. We studied animal enrichment, which is encouraging normal or wild behaviors. We observed tortoises putting balls in the tortoise habitat which had food in it. We also observed enrichment with the octopus by putting a crab inside a hamster ball and watched the octopus open the hamster ball and then eat the crab.”

Joslyn shadowed a Structural Engineer at Michael Baker International, Cuyahoga County Department of Public Works and HDR, Inc. Her mentor was Structural Engineer Lisa Abraham Hoekenga ’00. “Structural engineers are responsible for designing, constructing and overseeing projects involving buildings, roads, bridges and other structures. The industries in civil engineering are airports, bridges, buildings, coastal and marine, energy and power, environmental, geotechnical, offshores and public health.”

“Before my Junior Professional Shadowing experience, I knew I wanted to go into the field of civil engineering, but I never knew how broad the field was,” shared Joslyn Muñiz ’18. “When I shadowed, I had the opportunity to go to a work site which made me realize I want to be a constructional civil engineer when I grow up. I want to be in the field and hang from a bridge by ropes. Shadowing a structural engineer made me appreciate everything they design for the community to be safe.

I want to be a civil engineer but not just any civil engineer – I want to be the civil engineer that makes a difference in a small way. I want to keep people safe in the community without anyone even realizing it. I want to be the civil engineer that has a purpose. I will be the civil engineer of the future. My Junior Professional Shadowing experience was one of the best I have ever had in my life.

I am thankful to Saint Joseph Academy, Lisa Abraham Hoekenga ’00 and the structural engineers I met because of this experience. They have reassured me that I will be the female civil engineer of the future and make a difference in my community.”

Esther Ngemba

Esther had the opportunity to shadow Maura O’Donnell-McCarthy, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Cleveland Council on World Affairs (CCWA). Esther’s experience was unique because she was born in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and in 2006, her family was forced to become refugees because of the war. Her family lived in Uganda in a refugee camp for five years.

“I thought those were the worst years of my life, but now I know those years were the best and the most formative,” Esther said. “They made me who I am today.”

“The general focus of this career (at the CCWA) is to educate the Cleveland community about world issues and help people become more knowledgeable about foreign cultures, global issues and international relations,” Esther said. “The CWWA is a non-profit and their mission is to inspire engagement in international affairs through education, citizen diplomacy and public dialogue. The organization also brings speakers to Cleveland to discuss foreign policy.”

“During my Shadowing experience, I attended a video conference with the Manager of Programming, who works remotely from Dusseldorf, Germany. I gave my refugee presentation (which Esther had presented to more than 100 teenagers in the fall at the Ohio Conference Fall Youth Event) to the CCWA staff and interns. They asked many questions and I compared my refugee experience with others’ experiences.”

“Before Junior Professional Shadowing, I thought this career would be very interesting and would include getting involved in foreign policy,” shared Esther. “After this experience, I learned I may be interested in another career because I realized that I like working with people and helping provide for others’ physical needs more than setting policy.”

Hannah decided to complete her Junior Professional Shadowing at Nordson Corporation, where she spent her time focusing on finance.

“It was interesting to see how the finance and communications sides of business work together,” she said.

“Both departments need each other to run smoothly.”

“I really enjoyed seeing how the Nordson Foundation works and how the foundation focuses mostly on education and education-centered non-profits. I had the opportunity to meet with the Student Outreach Manager who told me her responsibilities in selecting students for Nordson scholarships, but discussed my interests and helped me narrow down my majors and careers would best suit my personality.”

“This Junior Professional Shadowing experience allowed me to learn about a career in nonprofit work as well as work in politics,” Hannah shared.

“Learning about these careers made me realize that I want to go into either politics or nonprofit work, potentially both depending on where life takes me. I hope to study political science in college, potentially with a minor in business or something business-related.”

Marisleysis spent her Junior Professional Shadowing experience with a cardiothoracic surgeon at the Cleveland Clinic.

Marisleysis spent her time in surgery.

“I put on scrubs, a mask and hair net. I was escorted into the operating room,” she shared. “The surgeon and his team were performing a septal myectomy, a surgical procedure performed to reduce septum and fixes shortness of breath in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), a cryomate procedure (freezing certain parts of the heart to fix a irregular heart beat) and a left atrial appendage. I was told to stand next to the resident doctor and was in awe, as I saw a chest open, with the patient’s heart beating right in front of my eyes! It was intense but incredible. The surgeon asked me if I had taken an anatomy class at Saint Joseph Academy, and I told him I had. It was nice to understand what they were explaining to me, such as different parts of the heart.”

“I also had a chance to see a sternotomy and thoracotomy, an aortic valve replacement, a double lung transplant (which was amazing to see the lungs arrive in a cooler and everyone was working very quickly), a Fontan procedure (a pediatric procedure) for a two-year-old girl and a mitral valve repair.”

“With this experience, I learned how the staff prepares a patient, that the staff is truly a teaching staff, and I felt so much more educated in the past three days than I have ever been,” shared Marisleysis. “I had the best time. I could not thank my sponsors enough for this opportunity because I saw so many procedures and how they worked. I hope to become a surgeon one day.”

Winter Sports BASKETBALL The Jaguars basketball program had a very successful 2016-17 season. The Varsity basketball team, playing one of the toughest schedules in the area, was ranked in the top 10 of the Cleveland.com poll for the entire season. Highlights included a pair of wins over Magnificat, capturing the tournament title at the Walsh Jesuit holiday tournament, and wins over Lakewood, Padua, Hoban, Brunswick, Avon and North Royalton.

The Jaguars also had two great experiences that took place in January. The team played in the first-ever girls basketball game at the prestigious “Flyin’ To The Hoop Tournament” in Kettering, Ohio, where they played the twotime State champions from Kettering Alter High School. They also had the opportunity to play at Quicken Loans Arena prior to a Cleveland Cavaliers game, where they beat Louisville High School 47-39.

Saint Joseph Academy earned the top

seed in the District tournament and earned a bye in the Sectional semifinal round.

The Jaguars topped Lincoln West in the Sectional final before falling to Medina in the District semifinal.

The Jaguars were led by the strong play of Seniors Colleen Drellishak (daughter of Kathleen Fox Drellishak ’81), Claire Orsagos (daughter of Jacqueline Aftoora N’78) and Ellen Vichill. Colleen Neitzel ’18 was one of five players (Claire Orsagos ’17, Bre Coleman ’18, Molly Neitzel ’19 and Colleen Drellishak ’17) to earn honorable mention all-district awards.

Colleen Neitzel ’18 led the Jaguars in scoring and rebounding this year with 10.3 points per game and 8.8 rebounds per contest. Congratulations to the Jaguars on a successful season!

SWIMMING The swimming and diving team had a strong season led by Maddy Kelly ’20. Maddy came into her first high school swim season with high expectations and set six school records, won Sectional and District titles, and became the first Jaguar swimmer to qualify to the State Meet under the current OHSAA format. What an amazing season!

At the state meet, Maddy Kelly ’20 competed in the 50 freestyle preliminaries and qualified for the consolation finals of the 100 backstroke after her 13th place finish in the preliminaries with a time of 57.41. She was 5th seed in the consolation final but swam a great race to win the consolation final, which placed her 9th overall in the event, with a time of 56.54. This came after she set a sectional record to win the 50 freestyle at Sectionals and also won the District meet in the 50 freestyle.

The Jaguars had eight team members advance to the District meet at Bowling Green, led by Rachel Strick ’17. The Jaguars had three relay teams qualify for the District meet: 200 medley relay – Maddy Kelly ’20, Paola CamachoColon ’19, Rachel Strick ’17 and Ally Sheehan ’18

INDOOR TRACK & FIELD This winter’s indoor track and field season was highlighted by a large team, many new athletes, great individual improvement and two athletes qualifying for the State indoor meet.

Indoor track and field, in its second year as a varsity sport, competed in six meets, including four in the Northeast Ohio Indoor Track League held at the SPIRE Academy in Geneva. 55 Jaguars competed every other week against other schools from Northeast Ohio. Leading the way was the undefeated Emma Pesicka ’19 in the shot put. She won all three regular season contests and the all-star meet. Also competing well were Lauren Zawie ’17 in sprints and Jessica Wrenn ’17 in hurdles and long jump.

(sister of Alessia Saul ’14), Olivia Battistoni ’17, Amanda Keim ’20, Annie Allen ’20, Grace Kelley ’19 (sister of Margaret Kelley ’14) and Meghan Hahn ’17 (daughter of Patricia Hayes Hahn ’89 and sister of Monica Hahn ’16) provided great depth in that area. Sophomores Madison Wilson (sister of Samantha Zogheib ’11), Julia McNamara (granddaughter of Mary Jo Flannery Karcher ’63) and Sam Burke were all outstanding in the throws.

Other valuable contributors were Molly Corrigan ’19 in sprints and hurdles, Maura Jordan ’20 in sprints and long jump, Riley Drellishak ’19 in hurdles and high jump, and Natalie Larkman ’18 in the pole vault. Perhaps the most improved athlete was mid-distance runner Olivia Fallon ’19, who set personal records in the 800 and 1600m runs.

Two athletes earned the right to compete in the Indoor State Meet. Jessica Wrenn ’17 competed in the triple jump and Emma Pesicka ’19 competed in the shot put. To qualify, athletes had to be one of the top 18 declared athletes in all of Division I. Congratulations, Jaguars!

The event – attended this year by more than 475 friends of the Academy – is a crucial fundraiser for scholarships and academic initiatives. A new record – nearly $260,000 net – was raised, thanks to the generosity of the Saint Joseph Academy community. This record includes the Support-A-Student Appeal, which far surpassed our goal, raising more than $91,000!

In addition, Distinguished Alumna Award recipient Daria Roebuck ’75 (see story below) and Medaille Shield recipient, the Robert and Loretta Arth Cleary ’40 Family, were honored for truly embodying the Saint Joseph Academy spirit and mission. Loretta held a lifelong devotion to her alma mater, and she and Bob generously supported Saint Joseph Academy throughout the years, including a bequest in Bob’s estate plans to help families facing unforeseen financial crises. The Robert J. and Loretta Arth Cleary ’40 Guardian Angel Fund has assisted a total of 77 students and their families to date.

Bob’s sister and brother-in-law, Marie and Harrington Glidden, were also benevolent patrons of Saint Joseph Academy. Like the Clearys, the Gliddens were deeply charitable toward Catholic institutions. Bob and Marie started the J. Harrington and Marie E. Glidden Foundation to ensure the family’s estate would continue to support Catholic

establishments. The Cleary children continue this legacy of support today, and we thank the Cleary Family for their generous commitment to Saint Joseph Academy!

We would also like to give a special thank you to parents and event chairs John and Andrea Ham P’18, Michael and Lisa Adkins Lonsway ’84, P’18, and Patrick and Camille Sheehan P’18.

Daria Roebuck ’75 2017 Distinguished Alumna Daria Roebuck ’75 was honored at “Celebrate the Academy” as Saint Joseph Academy’s 2017 Distinguished Alumna. It is well-deserved recognition.

After her father passed away while a student, Daria used the money she earned working to fund her final two years at Saint Joseph Academy. It was the first of many instances in Daria’s life where her work ethic and tenacity served her well.

“I realized I was not entitled to my Catholic education, and I felt fortunate to be able to continue attending Saint Joseph Academy,” she recalls.

Daria found Saint Joseph Academy’s diversity of the student population to be an attractive feature. It was an environment where she learned to listen to others and respect differences – qualities that would greatly help in her future field of human resources. She credits her business instructor, Ms. Helen Delaney ’54†, as a

major influence.

“She pushed me to excel, and she believed in me,” Daria recalls.

Daria graduated from Cleveland State University with a bachelor’s degree in business administration and embarked on a 35-year career as a human resources professional. She spent 20 years as vice president of human resources at ERICO International Corporation, where she was responsible for human resources activity in 30 different countries. She retired from ERICO in 2015 and redirected her resources to her passion: serving her dear neighbor.

“I don’t take for granted how fortunate I’ve been,” she said.

Both of Daria’s alma maters are beneficiaries of her generosity. She routinely gives of both her time and treasure to Saint Joseph Academy. She served on the Board of Directors from 2007 to 2013.

Guests were invited to volunteer to host a student for her Junior Professional Shadow Experience or to speak to students in a women’s leadership class. The event netted more than $40,000 for the scholarship fund.

I also know how important it is and how much the girls love it here. I think it is my obligation to carry on and make a difference in a young woman’s life.”

ur dear Sr. Kathleen Carey, CSJ ’49 (formerly known as Sr. Mary Terrence), passed away on December 21. Sister Kathleen was such a big part of Saint Joseph Academy for many years – as a student, teacher, interim principal, alumnae director and chief cheerleader for our dear alma mater. She loved everyone and everyone loved Sister Kathleen!

May she rest in peace.

In 2013, “The Sr. Kathleen Carey, CSJ ’49 Endowed Scholarship” was established to honor Sr. Kathleen, providing tuition assistance for a young woman with a demonstrated financial need at Saint Joseph Academy. The scholarship ensures that Sr. Kathleen will have an impact on Saint Joseph Academy in perpetuity. Contributions are always welcome to honor Sr. Kathleen’s legacy.

Beyonds Alumnae

1960s

Dolores Dussault Schafer N’61, after attending a lecture by world renowned artist/ sculptor Don Drumm, authored a short story book about the artist entitled Don Drumm: The Sculptor-Designer Craftsman. The Don Drumm Gallery and Studio is located in Akron, Ohio and just recently celebrated its 45th Anniversary. In addition to her writing, Dolores recently retired as a Medical Office Practice Manager, with a career in the medical field of more than 30 years.

1970s

Michelle Tesar Barrentine N’74 completed a one-year Master of Leadership Development from St. Mary-of-the-Woods College in Indiana, which is also her undergraduate alma mater. She finished her work in August of 2016 and walked to receive her diploma in December 2016.

Linda Quinn, PhD ’79 was selected by the Faculty Affairs Committee as the recipient of the 2016 College of Sciences and Health Professions Jearl D. Walker Outstanding Teaching Award. The Jearl D. Walker Outstanding Teaching Award is intended to honor those whose teaching at Cleveland State University (CSU) and other contributions to education and pedagogy are recognized as exceptionally strong. Linda is currently a Senior College Lecturer at CSU.

1980s

Eileen Luna ’87 recently relocated to Albuquerque, New Mexico to study Psychology at the University of New Mexico and to prepare for a master’s degree in Counseling.

2000s

Laura Schlecht ’02 has been promoted to Vice President of HL Group’s Consumer/ Lifestyle Division. HL Group was recently named The Most Powerful Public Relations Firm in America by The New York Observer.

She has been employed at HL Group for almost four years. Since graduating from Fordham University, Laura has been living in New York City.

Marie Dantio Robinson ’06 is a doctor of Veterinary Medicine and recently completed the first year of a three-year neurology residency program.

Jazmin Bailey ’07 is the morning news anchor on the WESH 2 News Sunrise newscast, the NBC affiliate in Orlando, Florida. Prior to joining Jazmin Bailey WESH, she was the anchor and producer of the weekday morning newscast at WHSV-TV in Harrisonburg, Virginia. Jazmin was also a producer for WILX-TV in Lansing, Michigan. She is an alumna of Michigan State University.

Kadryn Goodwin McPherson ’07 married Martin McPherson on October 1, 2016.

Elizabeth Gaertner ’08 recently completed 35 hours of training and observation to become a volunteer with the Crisis Text Line.

The organization provides 24/7 support and information to anyone in any type of crisis.

2010s

Emily Alberty ’11 recently graduated from Cleveland State University with a master’s degree in PreK-12 Literacy Curriculum Instruction and Development and PreK-12 Reading Endorsement. She is a bilingual pre-kindergarten teacher in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District.

Kristina Jackson ’12 graduated from the University of Cincinnati, B.S. Biology/ Biological Sciences and is currently working as Quality Assurance at Nestlé Professional.

Julie Colaianni ’13 is a Senior at Case Western Reserve University studying Communication Sciences and Disorders who hopes to pursue a doctorate degree in audiology. She serves as Case Western Reserve University’s chapter President of the National Student Speech Language and Hearing Association (NSSLHA).

Julie played volleyball for Case Western Reserve University for three years, where she was a member of the historic team that qualified for the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championships for the second time in the school’s history and claimed its first-ever NCAA Tournament victory.
