John 17:21 We speak about “serving the dear neighbor without distinction,” a key aspect of the charism of the Congregation of St. Joseph. Much like the lawyer questioned Jesus in the parable of the Good Samaritan, we ask ourselves “who is our neighbor?”

The young women of Saint Joseph Academy – both current students and young alumnae – know that our neighbor includes everyone. Whether on campus, across the city of Cleveland, or around the world, they reach across every distinction, embracing diversity and breaking down barriers, to be one with others.

Read their stories in the pages that follow and you will see this mission in action.

Learn about the Facing History and Ourselves class, where history is viewed through the lens of Catholic social teaching. See how current students make service come alive. Be inspired by the stories of young alumnae helping immigrants, healing the sick and building bridges – both literally and among cultures. These young women are living the charism, thereby extending the influence and impact of the Congregation of St. Joseph.

It was just in late June that the city of Cleveland shared total joy and unity. I never would have imagined that winning a basketball championship would bring so many people together as one. All ages, colors, faiths, genders, national origins, races united together for the Cavaliers Game 7 victory celebration and then the biggest parade seen in Cleveland in decades!

This warm feeling of unity stayed with me for days, but that joy has been replaced by great sadness as I write this, after the unthinkable violence that has erupted in our country and around the globe. Such terrible loss of life makes my heart ache.

How can we use the lessons we teach our students, or learned ourselves here at the Academy, to bring about a more peaceful and unified world? How can we use our voices, our presence, our prayers to serve the dear neighbor without distinction, to bring about reconciliation and unity?

Rita Petruziello, CSJ ’58 took action. Sister Rita mobilized a grass roots effort that brought together thousands of people for the “Circle the City with Love” event on Sunday, July 17th on the eve of the Republican National Convention held in Cleveland. It was a silent statement of prayer for oneness and love in our times. “By standing in unity and intentional silence, we will embody the power of love that brings peace and justice to our city, our country and our world at this important moment in our city’s history, “said Sister Rita.

May we be aware of our neighbor and share the love the world so desperately needs.

Facing History and Ourselves Course Builds Principled Reasoning Skills

W

hen guest lecturer Mark SwaimFox met with a classroom of 32 seniors on their last day of school, he was humbled by the brilliant, bold and empathetic women he met. As the Director of the Cleveland office of the non-profit Facing History and Ourselves, an international educational and professional development organization, Mr. Swaim-Fox’s position brings him to a number of high schools in the area. However, he couldn’t help but notice that there was something special about the students he met at Saint Joseph Academy.

Mr. Swaim-Fox visited the pilot course, “Facing History: Identity and Membership in American Society.”

The class was cotaught by CORE Ministry faculty member Cathy Lanning Knittel ’67 and Social Studies faculty member Mr. Cathy Lanning Knittel ’67 Nick Roaldi. Mrs. Knittel and Mr. Roaldi created a classroom atmosphere that prompted reflection, critical thinking and open dialogue. The success of the course during the spring semester Nick Roaldi means it is slated to return to SJA for the 2016-2017 school year.

The course at Saint Joseph Academy is a natural extension of the school’s curriculum, incorporating the Facing History and Ourselves organization’s core mission to “engage students of diverse backgrounds in an examination of racism, prejudice and anti-Semitism in order to promote the development of a more humane and informed citizenry.” Using this pedagogy, the course blends history with Catholic social justice. Explained Mrs. Knittel, “This course is full of ways to make our Catholic faith come alive – make it real.” Specifically, the Facing History students explored complex cultural issues of immigration, gender roles, race, poverty and education.

This is the first time the CORE

Ministry and Social Studies departments joined together to create a compelling and comprehensive course on moralitybased citizenship. In addition to their joint classroom time, the course is taught in a blended format comprised of independent study time and a digital meeting space on Google Classroom. The students watched documentaries, read current event articles and discussed significant community issues. Mr. Swaim-Fox said, “time and time again the students talked about the space the teachers created – how they honored their [students] voice and allowed them to disagree and form their own opinions.”

“This class is entirely made up of seniors and this is by design,” explained Mrs. Knittel. “These young women are cognitively and psychologically at a point where they can talk about these issues seriously – and they need to.”

The class was privileged to learn from guest speakers Natalie Leek-Nelson ’85, President and CEO of the crisis nursery Providence House, Kathleen M. Ryan SND, Director of the Diocese of Cleveland Social Action Office, and educators from the Facing History office.

Highlights of the course also included writing “Stop the Hate Essay” submissions for the Maltz Museum of Jewish History and taking an educational tour of Cleveland.

Principal Jeff Sutliff also saw the benefits of the course, and how it exemplified the active learning that occurs in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme (MYP). “Facing History

directly supports the desire of Saint Joseph Academy to create IB learners through its emphasis on critical thinking, principled decision making and active citizenship,” he said. “It molds students into young women who are committed to fostering the development of a more peaceful, just and unified world.”

On the last day of the semester, the young women were charged with the task of presenting an “Exploration of Cleveland’s Identity Past, Present and Future” cumulative report. Students tackled real and raw issues in Cleveland like public education, urban sprawl, crime violence, genocide and realities for women. The students shared their findings through videos, recorded interviews, original photos, stories and research in a capstone presentation delivered to Mr. Swaim-Fox. As each senior shared her goals in shaping the future of Cleveland, Mr. Swaim-Fox couldn’t help but notice the transformation that occurred in these young women throughout the course of the semester. Mr. Swaim-Fox said, “I tried to push them to talk about the hard things in the class, and they were great in their responses. It was clear they are leaving that class empowered and changed as young women.”

Nazareth Library Receives Top Award From the State of Ohio

T

he Nazareth Library has always strived to stay on the forefront of learning – including incorporating more technology-driven resources than ever before into its collection. Now the state of Ohio is recognizing these efforts, awarding the library its Ohio Educational Library Media Association (OELMA) Outstanding Individual Library Award. The Nazareth Library is the only library in the state to receive this honor, which recognizes an exceptional building-level library program, its integration into the school’s curriculum and its ability to connect with the needs of the school’s wide array of learners.

Through Nazareth Library’s vast resources, students have been able to conduct research and take classes that would not have been possible only a few short years ago. This year, Library Chair Rebecca Synk and Instructional Librarian Meagan Fowler collaboratively taught an independent studies class on the history of WWI. They also spearheaded four-year research units for a variety of classes such as AP English 2

Language and Composition to ensure students have experience using databases before they go to college. The library is also vital to the success of the 1:1 technology program. While still offering traditional books, it also provides eBooks for classroom reading and leisure, multiple college-level databases and more.

One of the largest initiatives in recent years has been Sursum Libros, a program that encourages students to read for enjoyment. Those students who read 600 or more pages per quarter become eligible for dress down days, pizza parties and other prizes. Mrs. Synk said that the program has had a positive impact on the school community, with more students reading outside the classroom.

“We want to promote literacy beyond the classroom and encourage students to be lifelong learners and readers,” said Mrs. Synk.

giving students choice and responsibility.”

The library’s philosophy of giving students more freedom when it comes to reading has inspired a new format for the 2016-17 summer reading initiative, one that focuses more on reading level and style.

Principal Jeff Sutliff highlighted the accomplishments and dedication of Mrs. Synk and Mrs. Fowler in their nomination letter.

“Our teacher librarians are of the highest professional caliber. They have worked tirelessly to be leaders within our school community and encourage a lifelong love of reading. We are extremely blessed to have such a dedicated and innovative team of librarians.”

Mrs. Synk and Mrs. Fowler along with Library Assistant Lou Ann Wensink will be presented with the award at OELMA’s Annual Conference in Columbus, OH this October.

he Nazareth Library at Saint Joseph Academy continues to play a vital role in how we acquire knowledge, create community and develop empathy.

These are three of the key aspects of the educational mission of Saint Joseph Academy, providing the necessary context and resources for learning. In keeping with the spirit of the Congregation of St. Joseph, our library also always provides a welcoming and inclusive environment for our students.

Libraries and school librarians have evolved a great deal in the past few decades, but they continue to liberate and empower people by promoting reading, research and critical literacy. As Saint Joseph Academy begins to implement the International Baccalaureate Middle Year Programme (IB MYP), librarians will support more student-centered, inquiry-based learning.

Because we now live in a world where we

have instant access to incalculable levels of both information and misinformation, our librarians perform the vital role of teaching students how to research with effectiveness and integrity.

Through Sursum Libros, our various book clubs and the summer reading program, the Nazareth Library promotes and spreads the pure joy and intellectual engagement that comes from reading good books. Fundamental to these programs is the crucial element of student choice.

While we learn from reading the required texts, we only reach our full potential when have freedom in how we engage with the world and learn to think for ourselves.

A comprehensive study by the U.S. Department of Education confirms the value of independent reading: “The amount of free reading done outside of school has consistently been found to relate to growth in vocabulary, reading comprehension, verbal fluency, and general information.

tests in all subject areas, and have greater content knowledge than those who do not.”

Our librarians’ desire to promote exploration and student inquiry put them at the forefront of academic initiatives that keep the Academy vibrant. Their skill with technology and organization ensures that our 1:1 Chromebook program runs effectively. As experienced archivists, our librarians also lead courses where students partner with professional archivists from the Congregation of St. Joseph and Baldwin Wallace University to analyze historical documents and artifacts.

All of the excellent work that takes place in our library earned our librarians and students a special recognition from the Ohio Educational Library Media Association (OELMA) as the Outstanding Individual School Library in Ohio. We couldn’t be prouder.

Robotics Team Wins State Championship!

In May, two teams of students (one with freshmen and sophomores, the second with juniors and seniors) participated in the inaugural PenOhio Northeast Ohio Regional High School Writing Team Championships. The tournament marked the first time that Ohio high schools took part in an interscholastic writing competition. The “JV,” or freshmen and sophomore team, won first place in the contest, competing against writers from four counties representing 39 high schools. In addition, sophomore Hannah Glaser took second place in the individual JV category.

hree Saint Joseph Academy students teamed up with students from St. Edward High School to participate – and take home the top prize – in the Ohio FRC State Championship in robotics. Only the top teams in the state are invited to participate in this premier competition. ¡Olé! Spain Trip Offers Cultural Education

Whether they’re across the Atlantic Ocean learning about another county’s culture, or in the classroom participating in a global web conference to learn about history-making space events, Saint Joseph Academy students continue to learn from experiences on an international scale. Through programs like these and others, Saint Joseph Academy strives to instill a boundless curiosity in our students that helps them develop into caring risk-takers and communicators who will create a more advanced and harmonious world.

n March, forty students accompanied by chaperones visited the northern half of Spain for a nine day educational excursion that included art, culture and religion. The

trip was designed to help the young women experience other cultures, gain an appreciation for global perspectives and ultimately become more internationally minded.

While in Madrid, the young women participated in a guided tour of Las Ventas Bullring and watched a flamenco dance show. The group also visited the Museo del Prado, home to paintings by Francisco Goya, Diego Velázquez and El Greco, and learned how to cook traditional paella.

The group then travelled to smaller cities dotting the northern coast of Spain, including visits to the Alcazar in Segovia, a gothic cathedral in Burgos and the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao. The group

journeyed along the coast of the Bay of Biscay to San Sebastian, where they were given a guided tour of the city’s oldest and best landmarks to learn about the area’s history. Ending their journey in Barcelona, the international travelers enjoyed visiting and attending Easter Sunday Mass at La Sagrada Familia Cathedral, as well as a tour of the Camp Nou Stadium, home of the famous soccer club FC Barcelona.

Global Web Conference Provides Insights Into Space Mission

I

n April, eighteen students participated in a global web conference with engineers on the Rosetta Mission team from the German Aerospace Center, along with students from Egypt, Greece, Italy, Namibia, Poland and Spain. SJA Cleveland and Baton Rouge “Serve Together” Again This past Easter break, twelve Cleveland SJA students traveled to Louisiana on a service trip with their counterparts from St. Joseph’s Academy in Baton Rouge.

The students participated in the H.O.P.E. (Hands-On Preservation Experience) Project in which volunteers work in historic national parks. They cleaned, restored and secured headstones in Chalmette National Cemetery, which includes graves of soldiers who died fighting in the Civil War and the War of 1812. Sara Girard ’17 was featured in a local Baton Rouge TV news segment talking about the project. “To quote Audrey Hepburn, we have two hands,” said Sara. “One is to serve others and one is to serve ourselves; but I found that when you serve others, it brings a sense of joy and fulfillment, an achievement that you can’t find anywhere else.”

Butterfield ’16, Bailey Slattery ’16 (sister of Amanda Slattery ’06), Honor Fournier ’17, and Kaylyn Johnson ’17 collaboratively created a video as part of the conference application process, resulting in Saint Joseph Academy being the only high school to represent the Western Hemisphere.

Alumna Valentina Samodelov Lommatsch ’04 (sister of Sophia Samodelov ’06) works at the German Aerospace Center and was one of the presenters for the conference. Math/ Engineering faculty member John Lesko inspired Ms. Lommatsch to pursue two engineering degrees at The Ohio State University. Ms. Lommatsch and her colleagues discussed the implementation, mission and findings of the Rosetta Mission, which in 2004 launched the first-ever space

probe designed to land on a comet. After ten years in orbit, the probe reached the comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. A landing device named Philae touched down on the comet six months later. The mission is scheduled to end in September 2016.

“It was an amazing opportunity to be connected to so many other schools around the world at one time, and to learn about a mission that is still currently active,” said Greta Noeth ’17. “It was very encouraging to see an alumna involved with a mission after graduating such a short time ago.

Participating in the conference also helped give me more insight into the variety of projects on which someone in the aerospace field may work. I definitely think it would be cool to work on something being sent into space in the future.”

The students from the two schools have been coming together since 2011 to serve the dear neighbor in an ongoing mission program called “Serve Together.”

The group also worked together to help the Baton Rouge community by resurfacing a parking lot, helping at a food bank, and cleaning and organizing a church facility.

Health Sciences Honors Program Seniors Present Their Accomplishments

I

n May, Health Sciences Honors Program seniors presented their individual portfolios, including a summary of clinical hours. The final presentations are a vital part of the program, which strives to prepare young women for a life of compassionate leadership and service

in healthcare professions.

Students in the program completed one of two pathways, Gold or Purple.

Fourteen seniors completed the Gold Pathway that prepares students for success in a health sciences career that begins right after college graduation. The

KeyBank Event Highlights Finance Career Opportunities In April, twelve juniors accompanied by Math teacher Jill Satanek Garlock ’92, participated in the KeyBank Women’s Network at the KeyBank headquarters in downtown Cleveland. This was the second year that Saint Joseph Academy students were invited to the event.

KeyBank executives provided an overview of their disciplines to help students understand the range of careers within finance, a field where women are underrepresented. They also enjoyed a tour of the offices, including the trading floor. Students who attended the event will also be given consideration in the future for summer internships where they will have hands-on project experience and network with management and other professionals.

Purple Pathway prepares students for an education that extends past college towards a doctoral degree. The Purple Pathway was completed by seniors Sara Koussa (sister of Jiana Koussa ’13 and Bella Koussa ’14), Kathleen Loftus (sister of Maureen Loftus ’14, daughter of Maureen Sweeny-Loftus ’80, granddaughter of Bride Ann Sweeney ’50), Caroline Kilbane (sister of Elizabeth Kilbane ’18) and Lauren Krivanek. Graduates of the Purple Pathway presented to members of the Health Science Honors Program Advisory Board, including Dr. Frederick Frost, P’10 and ’15; Dr. Debbie Ghazoul-Mills ’79, P’13 and ’14; Dr. Kelly Hancock, P’17, all of the Cleveland Clinic; Dr. Amy Carruthers, P’18, of University Hospitals and Dr. Michael Gallagher, P’04 and ’09 (brother of Colleen Gallagher Thomas ’82) of Westpark Dental Associates.

Students from these pathways are continuing their health science education at prestigious colleges and universities across the Midwest.

Empty Bowls Project Provides 11,000 Meals for the Community When senior Emily Hanes heard about the Empty Bowls Project and how it benefited the Greater Cleveland Food Bank, she knew she could make a difference. Alongside Art teacher Terise Janca ’93, Emily coordinated the crafting of more than 100 hand painted bowls by SJA ceramics students. The bowls Emily Hanes ‘16 were filled with soup donated by local restaurants and Sharon Wolf of the Saint Joseph Academy Dining Hall, raising more than $1,400.

“I think that this small act of holding a fundraiser could really have the potential to make a great change in our community,” shared Emily. “I chose to support the Greater Cleveland Food Bank because I know how far they can stretch a dollar. One dollar provides eight meals!

With the money we’ve raised, we’ll be providing more than 11,000 meals.”

Feeding Ronald McDonald House Families For more than 26 years, Saint Joseph Academy has raised money through the collection of pop tabs, which in turn has provided more than 1,600 individual meals for Ronald McDonald House (RMH). RMH offers housing and meals free of charge to families with a child who is seriously ill and being treated in a local hospital. This year, students collected enough pop tabs to raise nearly $300 for RMH. Six purple wheelbarrows filled with pop tabs had a total weight of nearly 700 pounds!

Academy Chorale Performs at Sing Out! Benefit In June, The Academy Chorale and President Mary Ann Corrigan-Davis ’71 participated in the Cleveland Rape Crisis Center Sing Out! benefit at Severance Hall. Mrs. CorriganDavis was a member of the Sing Out! Chorale and Distinguished Alumna Linda Kane ’75 was a co-chair of the event. The bi-annual chorale benefit performance brings awareness to sexual assault and shows support for survivors. The Academy Chorale’s rendition of Til It Happens to You was one of the many highlights of the evening. The night’s performances raised more than $450,000 to benefit the Cleveland Rape Crisis Center‘s mission to increase education of rape and sexual assault, help survivors heal and advocate for change in our community.

Spring Musical Little Shop of Horrors Earns Performance Awards Members of the theater department performed the popular musical Little Shop of Horrors – a humorous tale of murder, love and a talking plant – this spring, and several performers received recognition at the citywide Dazzle Awards, sponsored by Playhouse Square. Four year Saint Joseph Academy cast member Ken Ernst of St. Edward High School (son of Donna Corrigan Ernst ’80, brother of Emmy Ernst ’14) was nominated for Best Supporting Actor in this new awards program for high school students.

Musical Performances Delight at ’Touch of Classical’ Spring Concert Musicians in the String Orchestra and Concert Band, as well as members of The Academy Chorale and the Handbell Ensemble, wowed the audience during the spring concert: A Touch of Classical. Featured selections included an original composition by Molly Stofko ’16, along with instrumental arrangements from Phantom of the Opera, Star Wars: The Force Awakens and music from Downton Abbey. A rousing rendition of King Cotton by John Phillip Sousa topped off the night.

Celebrates Jaguar Spirit From hallway decorating contests to friendly games and competitive events, Paws for Pride once again helped Saint Joseph Academy students spread school spirit. Students did an amazing job of transforming the school’s hallways into themed areas to represent their respective grades. While the Juniors took first place in the hallway decorations, the Freshmen won first place for their skit and the Senior class was crowned Paws for Pride champions!

O

nce again, Saint Joseph Academy faculty and staff are keeping the school on the forefront of educational trends and are receiving recognition nationally for their accomplishments.

Spreading Wellness Dean of Women Marie Ciolek and Health Sciences Honors Program Coordinator Kelly Gallagher ’09 presented at a symposium this spring at The Madeira School in McLean, VA through the National Coalition of Girls’ Schools (NCGS). The conference focused on “Developing Leadership through Wellness and Mindfulness,” a topic that is second nature for Ms. Ciolek and Ms. Gallagher.

The two organized and administered the new Wellness Curriculum, which requires students to participate in physical and spiritual activities. Each month there are various classes or activities that not only allow students to fulfill their requirement but also reinforce the importance of a healthy, spiritual life. Options include: Zumba classes, weekly reflections, daily prayer, attending speaker series and special events, and completing online coursework.

During the conference, Ms. Ciolek and Ms. Gallagher’s presentation – “WholeStudent Wellness to Promote Lifelong Self-Care” – shared why the team created the Wellness Curriculum, how it was

implemented and what they hope to change for the future. “Since wellness curriculums are new to most schools, it was good to learn what others are doing and see that we’re ahead of the game,” said Ms. Gallagher. “It was also a great opportunity to promote Saint Joseph Academy on a national scale.”

MIT & Makerspace Math Teacher John Lesko played an integral role in creating and developing SJA’s innovative Makerspace program – a project that inspires students to learn about technology and encourages them to

develop their skills. Now Mr. Lesko has taken his Makerspace knowledge to the next level by participating in a 3-day course at the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) called, “Creating and Maintaining Safe and Productive Makerspaces that Matter to Students.” He was the only high school teacher invited to participate.

successful Makerspaces at major universities around the world, emphasizing the importance of Makerspaces at the high school level. Lectures and activities also promoted the idea of building a maker community within the school, something that Mr. Lesko has already seen beginning at SJA. “There was a time when high schools didn’t have a computer lab or Smart Boards,” said Mr. Lesko. “Makerspaces are just the next step in the technological advancement of education. They offer the best of what’s new in modern technology along with the best of traditional education: practical hands-on experience.”

Art in Action Art teachers Terise Janca ’93 and Tammy Sparks presented at the Ohio Art Education Association (OAEA) Professional Development Conference in November, sharing information on how SJA’s Art Department helps students gain in-depth knowledge of their art studies and strengthens their creative skills.

Ms. Janca discussed, “So You Want to Flip Your Classroom?” — the concept of “flipping” the focus of classroom time to items like demonstrations and student interactions, and moving quizzes and tests outside of normal school hours and online.

Ms. Sparks shared what she learned teaching Advanced Placement Studio Art at SJA. As a result, other art teachers across the country are using her syllabus and original curriculum to develop AP art programs.

Ms. Sparks noted that the collaborative experience helps enhance the effectiveness of the art education for everyone. “[The content of our presentations] reflects positively on our school and leadership,” she said. “It shows that we are leading the art community in these areas.”

Perhaps Mrs. Ogonek will be most remembered by many students and alumnae for her countless hours of Christian service. She has led over 30 Kairos retreats for Juniors over the years. That’s an amazing outpouring of love – on God’s time” shared Mrs. Corrigan-Davis.

Although Mrs. Ogonek is looking forward to spending more time with her grandchildren, she will miss the SJA community which had a positive impact on her life. “It is the people – students and adults – who make SJA a great place to be,” said Ms. Ogonek. “My life has truly been blessed with the opportunity to work with a special community who truly cares about each other and the students we have been called to serve each year.”

She has accepted the position of Principal at Archbishop Hoban High School in Akron, OH effective July 1. Although Ms. Hanson will miss SJA, she is very excited for this new opportunity.

“It has been wonderful working with the SJA faculty on classroom instruction,” said Ms. Hanson. “Simply talking to them about best practices, instruction strategies and students has been energizing and fun. Our teachers want great things for our students.”

Dennis Cushing Honored with Sursum Corda Award Mathematics teacher Dennis Cushing received the Sursum Corda Award this year, recognizing the positive influence he has had on his students and the SJA community. The distinction is given to a full-time faculty member who exemplifies the Saint Joseph Academy mission and the charism of the Congregation of St. Joseph. Mr. Cushing’s peers recognized him as a compassionate teacher – someone who participates in the life of Saint Joseph Academy outside the classroom. In addition to teaching students critical mathematical skills, he encourages them to grow based on Christian ideals and to act with integrity by modeling Christian behavior.

Going into his sixth year as a faculty member, Mr. Cushing has contributed to all aspects of a Saint Joseph Academy education. He has chaperoned service trips to Kermit, WV and Louisville, KY, regularly cheers on Jaguar athletes at sporting events, and plays the guitar at school masses. Mr. Cushing is an outstanding example of values-based living and learning for his daughter Cady Cushing ’19 and the rest of the students at Saint Joseph Academy.

Spring Sports Rugby Wins First National Title and 6th State Championship!

What an amazing season for Jaguar Rugby!

Coming off a near-perfect season, the team not only won the state title for the sixth time, they won their first national title!

The Jaguars brought home their first national title after a 29-14 victory over Summit High School Rugby from Lindenwood University in St. Louis, MO. They advanced to the finals after competitive wins over Kahuku Rugby from Hawaii and longtime rival Divine Savior Holy Angels (DSHA) from Wisconsin. Tries from Becky Sullivan ’16, Rachel Kean (2) ’16, Frankie Burns ’19 (sister of Amanda Burns ’15), Yassmine Valentine ’17 (sister of Tayler Valentine ’15), and two conversion kicks by Regina Baldado ’18 sealed the Jaguar’s victory after an intense 80 minutes of play. Kean walked away with the MVP medal from the championship game and the game ball from her team.

“When that final whistle [blew], it honestly did not feel real,” Kean said. “All of this didn’t really feel real until we returned home.”

The team efforts were led by Head Coach Jaime Cleary, who started the Rugby program in 2007 as a club team. “When the Rugby program first began, our team lost every game,” said Mrs. Cleary. “Now we’ve won the state championship six of the last seven years and are national champions. We had a hard route, and we’ve shown that we are for real.”

In May, Jaguar Rugby was featured on WKYC’s “Biggest Winners” segment, hosted

by John Anderson, calling them a team on a “hot streak” and wishing them good luck at the State Championships.

Six days after the national title, SJA rolled to a 66-5 victory in the state semifinal over Brunswick High School.

In the championship game against Lakewood on June 3, the Jaguars posted a state championship four-peat with a 54-7 victory. It marked four straight titles in four years for seniors Kean and Mary Hirzel.

Softball Finishes Season as Sectional Champs A new coaching staff and training techniques brought a new competitive approach to the softball team this year.

After a fall and winter of open gyms and training, the Jaguars hit the field running when the spring season hit.

Lead by first year head coach Dale Dawson, the Varsity team finished the season as Sectional Champions, with Seniors Allison Kwan, Hannah Hill and Elizabeth Enovitch leading the team on and off the field. Mallory Ambrosio ’18 proved to be a powerhouse pitcher, pitching in all 28 games. The team stole a total of 113 bases out of 118 attempts, with Enovitch earning 39. Sydnie Whitaker ’17 (sister of Logan Whitaker ’19) dominated offensively, hitting four homeruns and batting .472.

The Jaguar Navy started off the season strong with two first place finishes, two second place finishes and three third place finishes at the Dillon Lake Sprints. The Jaguars then went on to race at the Hoover Regatta, where the Varsity 8+ came in second in the finals. JV8+ and Novice 8+ were first overall; Varsity 4+, JV 4+ and Novice 4+ finished third overall. The crew traveled to the Dammrich Rowing Center in Illinois for a dual meet against Loyola Academy where first place finishes were earned by the 2V8+, N8+, 2N8+, 3V4+ and N4+.

The Jaguars had a demanding presence competing against 47 different schools at the Midwest Scholastic Rowing Championship in Nashport, OH. Nine of the 11 entries advanced to the finals, with first place

semifinal finishes from the F8+, N4+ and J8+.

Midwest Championships were won in the J8+, 2V4+ and N4+. Silver medals were awarded to the F8+ and 3V8+. The V8+, J8+ and F8+ boats qualified to compete at the Scholastic Rowing Association of America (SRAA) National Championship. The Jaguars finished second overall in girls’ team points, earning them a banner in the Academy Center.

The F8+ and J8+ returned to Nashport, OH for the SRAA National Championship.

Both boats advanced to the semifinals, where the F8+ earned a rank of 12th in the nation. The J8+ moved up to the grand final and had a photo finish that resulted in a silver medal.

The track and field team capped off a competitive season with a strong showing at the post season meets. The team placed 4th in districts, with Monica Hahn ’16 (daughter of Patricia Hayes Hahn ’89, sister of Meghan Hahn ’17) taking the title in the 300H for the second year in a row. The team’s efforts qualified eight Jaguars for the regional meet and five for state. Timmia Crayton-Prioleau ’19, Monica Hahn ’16, Haley Morgan ’19 (granddaughter of Marlene Manik Bergen ’61), Kye Williams ’16 and Lauren Zawie ’17 represented the Jaguars at state in the 4x200, 4x100 and 300H. First Lacrosse Season Finished Strong The inaugural lacrosse season proved to be a great start for the Jaguars newest athletic program.

Captains Clare Tirpak ’16 (sister of Maria Tirpak ’15 and Mollie Tirpak ’19, granddaughter of Sheila McDonald McNally ’55), Molly Chambers ’17 (daughter of Michele Haas Ljubi ’80, sister of Colleen Chambers ’12) and Kristin Nauman ’18 (sister of Jessica Nauman ’18) led the team’s 43 members with enthusiasm and determination. The Varsity team had commanding wins over Avon High School and Beaumont School, while JV won its game against Wadsworth High School.

Ella Calleri ’19 was named McDonald’s Student Athlete of the Week for WEWS NewsChannel 5.

According to the Ohio High School Athletic Association, girls’ lacrosse will become an OHSAAsanctioned sport in spring 2017, the same time that lacrosse will transition into a varsity sport at SJA. The future looks bright for Jaguar lacrosse!

ith their white gowns perfectly pressed and a bouquet of 12 red roses in hand, the 159 members of the Class of 2016 made their way down Rocky River Drive to Our Lady of Angels Church for commencement on Tuesday, May 31. The class upheld the traditional “Walk of the Roses,” led by President Mary Ann Corrigan- Davis ’71 and Commencement speaker Mary Ann Fischer ’66, a Distinguished Alumna and an Associate member of the Congregation of St. Joseph who retired last June after 45 years of service to SJA. Ms. Fischer’s advice to the class was simple, but impactful. She complemented the students’ passion for serving the dear neighbor and encouraged them to continue to share their generous spirits with the world.

“Having a generous spirit means you look for ways to share yourself – your time, your talents, your energy – with the dear neighbor – that is, anyone you encounter in your dayto-day life,” said Mrs. Fischer. “To paraphrase Pablo Picasso…Discover your gifts…and give them away. You

will not be diminished by doing so, rather by giving, you will be enriched,” she encouraged.

Valedictorian Kathleen Loftus (sister of Maureen Loftus ’14, daughter of Maureen SweeneyLoftus ’80, granddaughter of Bride Ann Sweeney Gallagher ’50), will be attending the College of Wooster in the fall and has been admitted into an accelerated three-year undergraduate program with a guaranteed seat in the School of Dental Medicine at Case Western Reserve University.

During her time at SJA, she was an Academy Ambassador, the secretary and treasurer for the National Honor Society and a member of the volleyball, lacrosse and cross country teams. Kathleen was a recipient of the Ohio Honors Diploma, completed the Purple Pathway in the Health Sciences Honors Program and went on a mission trip to the Dominican Republic.

Jessica Spirnak, the class Salutatorian, will be attending Duquesne University in the fall.

During her years at SJA, she was

an Ambassador, served as an editor on the yearbook committee and a member of the St. Ignatius Flag Core. Jessica was also a member of the National Honor Society, a recipient of the Ohio Honors Diploma, and an Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist.

Emily Schuetz (daughter of Paula Schuetz, math teacher and CSJ Associate) was the recipient of the Phi Beta Kappa award. In the fall, Emily will be attending the University of Toledo to study bioengineering. While at SJA, she was a member of jazz band, concert band and stage crew, serving as stage manager for five SJA productions. She was also a member of the National Honor Society and a recipient of the Ohio Honors Diploma.

After the diplomas were handed out, the class stood and sang “Joseph, Father.” Keeping with tradition, the graduates then faced each other and sang a heartfelt rendition of “The Lord Bless You and Keep You.” Congratulations, Class of 2016! Sursum corda!

Class of 2016 Students Accepted into More Than 100 Colleges/Universities May 2 marked a big step forward for the members of the Class of 2016 as the graduating seniors gathered at the College Acceptances Wall and ceremonially placed a Jaguar paw sticker on their college of choice. The event was in conjunction with National College Decision Day. The Class of 2016 was accepted into 112 colleges/ universities, with the popular choices being The Ohio State University, John Carroll University, Miami University and Cleveland State University. Other notable choices included Tufts, Marquette, Syracuse and Case Western Reserve Kendra Cundiff ‘16 Universities. In addition, through her continued work in the health communication field, Rebecca has raised more than $150,000 to support the creation of several campaigns to promote health in rural and medically underserved communities. Most recently, Rebecca was part of a team that received a $100,000 National Institutes of Health grant to create a social media campaign targeting living kidney donations among Native American tribes. Caroline’s journey of helping others has taken her across the Midwest. Her concern for others has been shown throughout her professional life, beginning when she worked at the Cleveland Clinic as the Assistant to the Director of Education and Research.

Her compassion and calling to “pay it forward” are evident in everything she touches, including her efforts to plan the American Heart Association “Go Red for Women” events in Chicago.

She is now at the Cleveland Clinic as Program Coordinator in Emergency Management, where she works to implement emergency procedures. Caroline works diligently to ensure Fairview Hospital, and the surrounding community, are safe. Through her personal life, Caroline has become a dedicated lector and Eucharistic Minister, while also advocating for her son’s special needs, in the local PTA and in her church.

Working with children to realize their educational potential has always been a dream of Kelly’s, and since her time at SJA, she has made that dream into a reality. She started with her work in Tanzania, where she taught as a guest in the local village’s public school. From there, Kelly made her way to Phoenix, AZ, as a member of the Teach for America Corps, where she spearheaded a revision of a school district’s curriculum, resulting in a class average of 1.5 years reading growth and 92 percent mastery on the mandated mathematics final exam. Kelly was the regional site manager for Jumpstart in Philadelphia, a program that pairs college students with young, underprivileged children to improve their literacy. She currently works as the Director of Programs for Teach for America. Besides her dedication to teaching, Kelly has volunteered for a number of charitable activities such as working in an orphanage for AIDS-stricken infants in Africa, working on a Navajo reservation in Arizona, and a soup kitchen and food bank in Philadelphia.

Through her work as a doctor, Rachel has demonstrated the values of empathy, intellectual rigor, and creativity. More specifically, she has demonstrated her investment in the advancement of women’s health and the promotion of this cause – both professionally and in the community. She is a member of the American Medical Women’s Association (AMWA), a testament to her commitment to supporting women’s health initiatives. Rachel has invested her time in women’s issues since the beginning of college. In addition, she has been involved in the research and writing of numerous scholarly articles published in esteemed medical journals and magazines. She hopes that through organizations such as AMWA and increased awareness of women’s health issues, more women will be interested in entering the medical field. A natural leader, she is the Executive Editor of the Cleveland State Law Review, is a Law Justice Scholarship Recipient, and was named Cleveland State Law Review Associate of the Year (2014-2015). As a freelance music educator, Laura works with many children around the Cleveland area, teaching them about respect, courtesy and patience through violin lessons. In her spare time, she volunteers with the North Olmsted Arts Commission and facilitates art performances at community events, bringing in talent through her connections since her appointment in 2014. Laura co-wrote and implemented the Read to the Beat curriculum for the Cleveland Public Library, which strengthens the literacy skills of preschoolers who are at risk for falling behind. She has also used her talents to provide support at SJA for the Performing Arts programs.

Sophia became passionate about environmental issues through her service work at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo while she attended SJA. At Oberlin College she lived and worked in the Oberlin Student Co-operative Association, a student-run organization promoting co-operative living and sustainable farming. Sophia completed a tour with the Peace Corps in Guinea, Africa, where she organized and implemented a malaria education and mosquito net repair bike tour that continues to reach 600 Guineans. She created a 20-member beekeeping cooperative to work with communities to establish profitable beekeeping techniques and will be conducting research with the Save the Elephants organization.

“Women live longer and tend to marry older spouses, making them three times as likely as men to be widowed at 65. Approximately 84 percent of custodial parents are women.

Women who are parents of young children need to plan for the continued care of those children if something unforeseen should happen. In addition, the majority of children caring for aging parents are women. Finally, women control three-fourths of the financial wealth in the United States. It is important for women to get sound investment, charitable giving and tax planning advice.”

Make a Tax-Free Gift With Your IRA If you are 70 ½ or older, the IRS has a special opportunity for you to lower your tax rate – and give back to Saint Joseph Academy.

In 2016, the federal government made the IRA Charitable Rollover a permanent part of the tax code. What does that mean for you? Upon turning 70 ½, individuals are required to accept minimum distributions from their IRAs. Not only is this income considered taxable, but, as such, it will also make a portion of your Social Security benefits taxable – increasing your taxes and, perhaps your tax rate as well.

If you donate some or all of your IRA distributions to Saint Joseph Academy, it will reduce your adjusted gross income and subsequent tax liability. However, it’s important to make these distributions DIRECTLY to Saint Joseph Academy from your IRA account. If you accept the distribution and then donate it to the Academy, you will lose the tax saving benefit. Also note, because these direct donations lower your taxable income, they cannot be claimed as charitable donations.

Annual Scholarship Luncheon Reunites Friends, Celebrates Saint Joseph Academy

lumnae, friends and SJA supporters enjoyed an afternoon together in early May for the annual Spring Scholarship Luncheon at the Westwood Country Club.

Joanne Klimak ’71 recently graduated from The College of New Jersey with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. Joanne is an artist and mentor.

Rose Tyburski DiCenso N’71, a retired middle school teacher, has been a volunteer with the Colorado Division of Wildlife for the past 25 years. Rose presents to school children, counsels teachers about getting children outdoors, monitors bluebird boxes, captures and transports injured wild animals, and for the past 4 years has been monitoring raptors as part of a research project.

Patricia Gallagher Shields ’72 was recently inducted into the Defense Logistics Agency Hall of Fame in Columbus, Ohio. Pat worked for the Department of Defense for 35 years, the last 29 years being at the Defense Supply Center of Columbus.

Adrienne Flave N’76 recently retired after 40 years of service with the Federal Government, the last several years with the Department of Justice.

Since retiring, she has traveled the United States and Europe, and recently volunteered with the City of Cleveland, welcoming visitors to the Republican National Convention. Adrienne lives in the Washington, D.C. area, but plans to return to Cleveland in the future.

Maura Naylon Schroeder ’84 has worked for the Cleveland Cavaliers for over 20 years, currently as the Operations Team Manager.

She recently participated in all of the festivities celebrating the Cavs as National Champions, including attending the final playoff game and the parade in downtown Cleveland.

2000s

Elizabeth Looney ’02 finished medical school at Northeast Ohio Medical University and is now a resident physician practicing family medicine at MetroHealth.

Caitlin Fetters ’05 recently graduated with a Master of Education from Ohio University and has accepted a position as an Academic Advisor at the University of Rhode Island.

Krista Freeman ’07 recently received the Distinguished Alumni Award from Cleveland State University and is the first award recipient from the CSU Honors College. Krista was also one of Saint Joseph Academy’s 2015 “25 Under 35” honorees.

Elizabeth Hilow ’06 graduated from American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine and is in the pediatrics residency program at Cleveland Clinic.

Brooke Hamilton ’09 recently graduated from the Cleveland-Marshall College of Law, receiving her Juris Doctorate with summa cum laude honors. Brooke is currently preparing to take the Ohio Bar Exam in the near future.

Ashley Kasper ’10, a recent graduate of the College of Pharmacy at the University of Findlay, was matched to her first-choice residency at Cleveland Clinic at the main campus location.

of South Carolina. AmeriCorps Vista is part of the Corporation for National and Community Service, committed to the mission of bringing individuals and communities out of poverty.

Caroline Pallotta ’12 recently graduated magna cum laude from Emerson College in Boston with a degree in Writing, Literature & Publishing.

Caroline has accepted a position as a Managing Editorial Assistant at Simon & Schuster in New York City.

Pearlresia Alexander ’13 is currently a student at Hiram College, majoring in Sociology and minoring in Psychology. Because of a partnership between Hiram College and Case Western Reserve University (CWRU), Pearlresia was able to complete the necessary requirements and apply to CWRU’s Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences for graduate studies. She will receive her Bachelor of Arts in 2017 and will receive her Masters of Science and Social Administration in 2018.

Rita Hanna ’13 was recently part of a group of students, faculty and members of the John Carroll University community who traveled to Guatemala on an immersion trip. The group partnered with International Samaritan to improve the living and learning conditions of the Guatemalan people who face extraordinary struggles. Rita credits her desire to serve the dear neighbor to the spirit of service she developed while a student at Saint Joseph Academy.

SOPHIA WEINMANN ’07 RECEIVES FULBRIGHT GRANT West Park native Sophia Weinmann ’07 received a Fulbright U.S. Student Program grant in Biological Sciences from the U.S Department of State and the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board. Sophia will use the grant to conduct research in Kenya, Africa with Save the Elephants. The Fulbright Program is a premiere international education program designed to bring people of the U.S. and people in countries of need Sophia Weinmann ’07 at Tsavo East together to solve global challenges.

National Park in Kenya While working with Save The Elephants in Kenya, Sophia will conduct thesis research on how changing agricultural practices effect elephants and reduce regional human-elephant conflict. This research will help her complete her anticipated Master of Science in Resource Conservation at the University of Montana. More importantly, the research she conducts will help restore humanwildlife coexistence and advance conservation efforts in Africa.

In Ohio, Sophia volunteers with the Northern Ohio Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Association and the Peace Corps Ohio Refugee and Immigrant Outreach Program. In addition to Ohio, she has served and contributed research to communities in California, Wyoming, Idaho, Montana, Kenya and Guinea, Africa.

Nominate Fellow Jaguars for the 2017 Athletic Hall of Fame Do you know a Jaguar athlete, coach or supporter who should be recognized for their contributions to Saint Joseph Academy athletics? Now through December 2, 2016, nominations are being accepted for the Athletic Hall of Fame. All inductees will be honored at a special ceremony on Saturday, April 22, 2017.

Nominees will be evaluated by the SJA Athletic Hall of Fame committee on their contributions to interscholastic athletics at SJA using the following requirements:

1) ATHLETES: Will become eligible at least 10 years after graduation from SJA. Must be a Saint Joseph Academy varsity letter winner.

LOOKINGAHEAD Nazareth Academy Reunion Luncheon Nazareth Academy alumnae are invited to attend their annual luncheon on Sunday, September 11. This year’s event will be held at the 100th Bomb Group Restaurant on Brookpark Rd. Special recognition will be given to attendees of reunion classes ending in “1” or “6,” especially the Class of 1966 celebrating their 50 year reunion. Invitations will be mailed in August to those alumnae living in the Northeast Ohio area. Grand Reunion/Homecoming Weekend Join fellow classmates as well as other Saint Joseph Academy graduates for the 2016 Grand Reunion, Friday, October 7 through Sunday, October 9, 2016. The weekend includes a Friday night Young Alumnae Get Together for the Classes of 2001, 2006 and 2011. On Saturday, all alumnae and their families are invited to cheer on the JV and Varsity Volleyball teams from the “SJA Alumnae Section” as they take on Amherst High School (11 a.m. start for JV game; approximately 12:30 p.m. start for Varsity). Saturday evening, alumnae from reunion classes ending in “1” or “6” are invited to a special dinner at Saint Joseph Academy. On Sunday, October 9, there will be a special brunch for the “Golden” Classes of 1941, 1946, 1951, 1956, 1961 and 1966 and their spouses. Marge Madness Basketball Tournament The second annual Marge Madness Basketball Tournament will be held this year in the Academy Center on Sunday, November 6 to raise funds for the Maggie Daniels Endowed Memorial Scholarship at Saint Joseph Academy. This fun-filled day consists of 5-on-5 teams, progressing along a bracket until there is a winner. Prizes and contests for participants and fans alike!
