May 1782 - John McElroy, founder of St. John’s Literary Institution, was born in Euniskillen, Ireland. He immigrated to America at the age of twenty-one, settling first in Baltimore, Maryland, and then in Washington, D.C., where he entered the Jesuit Order at Georgetown. Circa 1803 -1810- The large, elegant mansion later known as Prospect Hall and the future site of St. John’s Literary Institution was constructed on

1829-

Red Hill in Frederick, Maryland Father McElroy founded Saint John's on 2nd Street in Frederick, Maryland. He also founded the first free school for black children in Washington D.C. and founded Boston College in 1865. The Charter of St. John's Literary Institution was obtained from Maryland State Legislature in 1829.

1915-

St. John's Literary Institution became coeducational, with the School Sisters of Notre Dame helping staff the parish school.

1958-

The Archdiocese of Baltimore bought Prospect Hall and St. John's Literary Institution moved grades 9 to 12 from the downtown Frederick location to the acquired building. The School Sisters of Notre Dame were no longer able to staff the school, so a group of dedicated parents and parishioners pooled their energies and resources to keep the school open. Through their dedication, St. John's remained open as the first independent, Catholic School in Maryland. Prospect Hall Mansion was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. A Sesquicentennial Celebration Ball was held for St. John's Literary Institution.

St. John's Literary Institution at Prospect Hall was renamed Saint John's

Catholic Prep in anticipation of relocating the school a few miles away to Buckeystown, Maryland. You are reading this yearbook and might be thinking these first couple pages are fairly boring! Believe it or not...someday, in years to come when you read this again, you will appreciate knowing the history of the school and the Prospect Hall Mansion!

Do you recognize this? It is one of the windows above the doors of the mansion. They are called an elliptical fanlights and are original to the building. They are very unusual because they are the Federal style of architecture and the mansion is built in the Greek Revival style.

They were extremely expensive and only the very wealthy had them in their homes. They were a huge status symbol of the time!

George Washington's wife Martha was a widow with children when he married her. Her daughter was married to Daniel Dulaney's

son, the first owner of the estate. Washington visited the Dulaney family during the Revolutionary War and was given the horse named Blueskin that he rode during the war. Washington loved Blueskin so much that, when the war ended, he returned him so he

could live out his days in the pasture where he had been born. It has long been told that Blueskin is buried in the front yard of the mansion! Legend has it that Blueskin's spirit wanders the grounds every year on George Washington's birthday! Painting Of George Washington and Blueskin

Agnes served at the Prospect Hall estate as a

setvant girl soon after the American Revolution.

It was discovered that Christopher Dulaney, the

son of the owner, Daniel Dulaney the younger,

engaged in an affair with Agnes. Dulaney's parents

were outraged, as it was extremely taboo for a man

of privilege to associate with a lowly housemaid.

Dulaney's mother was particularly angry and as a

result, she sent Christopher to France. Meanwhile, Agnes pleaded her innocence, but to no avail. Mrs.

Dulaney had Agnes buried alive in the wall that now separates the faculty room and the president's office. Ever since, the ghost of Agnes has been seen in Prospect Hall and numerous cases of

unexplained activity have been reported.

As we sit to write this letter we cannot help but first recognize the graduating Class of 2010. It is especially special for Mr. Cosentino because

like you, he began his time here at Saint John’s four years ago. As principal, it truly has been an honor to watch the senior class grow and mature into fine young men and women.

Dr. Campbell has had the

privilege to have this year with the seniors and the opportunity to witness all their wonderful attributes. We are so blessed to have such an incredible student body, faculty and staff that make our school community so great! Reflecting on this past year, it seems so appropriate to focus on the history of Prospect Hall. This building has so many rich stories and many

of them have been experiences that students and teachers have made while being here. We hope as you look through this yearbook, you will be reminded of fond memories and look forward to adding to the history of our school. In closing we would like to thank Mrs. Corr and the entire yearbook staff for all of their hard work and dedication that they have put in to this endeavor. Seniors, please know that we will miss you and that we look forward to your visits back to us as Saint John’s alumnus!

The campus of Saint John's Catholic Prep was buried under nearly 4 feet of snow with drifts that climbed much higher! Mr. Catalani and the facilities staff worked for days to get the school ready for students to return! Finding a place for all of the snow was no easy task, so, 10 foot piles were scattered around! This was definitely a major event and another chapter in the history of the school and the Prospect Hall property.

Frederick was virtually a ghost town for days after the storms. There was so much snow and no easy solution for it's removal! It was eventually trucked out

of the city and placed in huge piles at Harry Grove Stadium!

Ski Club is an organization that orchestrates numerous trips to Ski Liberty, Whitetail and Ski Roundtop in Pennsylvania. Students purchase discounted night club cards which allow students to ski at night at these specific resorts. ‘Did you know... On a Saturday in October, forty students, parents, alumni and friends gathered to clean up the garden area in front of the mansion. We were all shocked by the discovery of a huge brick cross buried by years of dirt and covered with grass. It is believed to have been constructed nearly 30 years ago! We also found and unearthed two stone pathways. It was sucha feeling of accomplishment for those that worked to bring the garden back to life!

Twice this year, the Red Cross Club sponsored a Blood Drive to encourage

teachers and students 16 years and older to donate blood to help people in our area.

Just one pint of blood can save up ike) three ‘ lives. Each event has been a huge success!

Nikki Teasley of the WNBA's Atlanta Dream, isa 1997 graduate of Saint John's *!

That year, she received the High School Player of the Year Award. Teasley went on to play at the University of North Carolina. She was named the 1998 ACC Rookie of the Year and is still UNC’s all-time assists leader with 728.

Selected by the Portland Fire in the first round (fifth overall) of the 2002 WNBA Draft, she

The Saint John's cheerleading squad had a great season

filled with plenty of smiles and spirit. Captain Alyssa Pennington and Co-captains Allie Oliverio and Sarah Luqman led the squad to the best it could be this year. Coach Nina Krauss will be missed next year as this was

her last season coaching. "I have had a great time coaching these girls the past three years and will miss them and the excitement of the Friday night football games.” The cheerleaders bring lots of energy to the football and basketball games and really get the fans excited about the games!

The Saint John’s Catholic

Prep Varsity Football team, in their first move back to the MIAA B Conference since 2007, made great strides in an incredibly demanding conference. The Vikings were competitive in all conference games this year, leading conference powers Boys Latin and

Archbishop Curley into the 4th quarter. The Vikings lost six games this year by a combined total of 14 points. Veteran starters continued

to master their positions and new starters and team members made great progress throughout the season. The Vikings look to be even more competitive next year, returning the bulk of their production from this year’s team.

The SJCP Boys’ Cross Country Team had a very exciting season. As a team, the men beat every

team in the MIAA B Conference at least once! They finished the season with an impressive record of 20 wins — 4 losses. The

men are looking forward to many more exciting seasons to

come! The SJCP Girls’ Cross

Country Team had a fun and surprisingly successful season. The ladies numbered only six,

and sseveralmembers were new to the sport. Despite this, as a team, the ladies beat 11 teams at

the IAAM B Conference Championships finishing the season with a record of 22 wins — to losses. At the MD/DC State

Private Schools Championship, the girls brought home the Small School State Championship Trophy! Congratulations girls!

The SJCP Girls' Soccer team

completed a very successful season with a 14-5 record, which included an 8-1 first

place league record. The team won the Maryland

Independent Private School Tournament with a thrilling victory over rival St. Maria Goretti. The Girls’ Soccer team

also went undefeated at home in league play. This is only the 3rd time this has happened in Saint John's Girls’ Soccer

history! The team defeated Garrison Forest and Roland Park in the playoffs with goals coming from five different players and outstanding play in the midfield and defense. The team returned to the finals for the first time since 2004

where they met 2nd seeded Bryn Mawr. In a tough game,

Bryn Mawr won 3-0 but the girls battled hard. The future looks extremely bright for the lady Vikings!

During the 2009 season, the

Saint John’s Varsity Volleyball team demonstrated that hard

work and dedication lead to improvement and victory. Each player improved their skills significantly and played an important role in contributing

to the team’s successes. Every match, the players came out with intensity to play, making each game enthralling for both the players and the spectators. The team was able to overcome various hardships throughout the season. The Vikings were able to fight their way to the second round of playoffs, but

In a very eventful season, SJCP Boys'

Soccer grew to 17 players strong. Each player was committed to putting in the work to make the team the best it could be. This season's team fell victim to inconsistency

and injury but, none the less, the guys were able to persevere and achieve

the goal set in the preseason ...making it to the playoffs! The team was lead by the four strong senior players. The quality of this young team creates excitement

for the future of the Boys’ Soccer program.

The SJCP Girls' Basketball program had an amazing year! The JV team had a season full of

accomplishments that included winning the IAAM "C" Division Championship in a thrilling game over Annapolis Area Christian School, 31-27. Finishing with a record of 13-2, the JV squad dominated their competition, winning seven games by

20 points or more! The Varsity Lady Vikings came full circle and won the IAAM "C" Division Championship defeating Park School 50-46 in overtime!

The win capped off a great season that saw the Lady Vikings finish with a 18-7 record. The team was led by senior captains, Jennie Ballenger, Hyatt Keller,

Megan Middeke and Amy Duncan. Newcomer, six foot centers, Jenna Rimel

and Christine Hagan played a major part in the success of the team providing defensive rebounding and shot blocking capabilities. Sophomores Marial Pierce, Katie Barrientos, Alexis Truxillo, Meredith Jones and Brooke Wilson were

part of a defensive unit that wore down opponents all year. Congratulations to the Lady Vikings for winning the 2009-2010 IAAM Championship...

The basketball court saw lots of action during 20009 and 2010!

extremely fulfilling this year. The boys made it to the semifinals of the Greencastle end of season tournament and won a

double over-time thriller at Saint Steven's Saint Agnes.

games. The season was incredibly rainy...weather played a big role and the girls played through rain, snow and even 90 degree weather! Making it to the play-offs and ending with a 5-3 record

made for a good year!

Our team had a building 2009 season. We had a

large group made up of

student athletes from all grades. As a team, we had some tough matches against Key, Glenelg, Baltimore Luthern, and Park. Seniors, Michael

Rodriguez and Brian McDonald provided great

leadership to the young squad. In the end, we

managed to improve and hope to have a great 2010 on the courts!

season was a very successful one for the Saint John's Catholic Prep Vikings. Under the leadership of three strong senior players,

Unfortunately, they came up short, but were very proud of their efforts on the field during the season !

Meghan Conway and Marykate O'Donoghue took a bronze medal. Taylor McDowell broke the school record in the 3200m run. This adds to his school records set earlier in the 5 K, 3 mile and indoor 3200m

run making Taylor the best distance runner in school history! Finally, Laura Kinley brought home the GOLD medal in the 800m run at the A-Conference Championship meet at Calvert Hall. Laura finished this race over 10 meters in front of the next runner! In so doing, Laura broke the school record in the 800m run adding to her previous school records in the 200m and 400m dash

marking her as the best middledistance runner in school history! Everyone on the team made great strides this season and exceeded the expectations of the coaches. The 2010 season looks to be very competitive with the return of some very talented athletes!

New to the team, Kyle Briggs set a sophomore school record in the Long Jump. Dylan Stedman, also new to the team this season, tied a Saint John's school record,

clearing the 5'4" High Jump. The 4x400m Relay Team that beat

both John Carroll and Loyola at Championships consisted of Kyle Briggs, Dylan Stedman, Sean Reilly-Wood and Matt Leiter. The girls side also had many accomplishments and records set as well. Kelly Crowley set asophomore school record in the Long Jump. In addition, all three of the girls Relay Teams

qualified for the A-Conference Championship Meet. The 4x800m Relay was run by Emily Kinley, Faith Jones, Alex Asuncion, and Elizabeth Harraka. The 4x200m included

Marykate O'Donoghue and Isi Izevbigie. Seniors Jesi Breen and Isi Izevbigie led the 4x400m

Relay Team. All members on the Winter Track and Field Team contributed greatly and showed tremendous improvement!

This seasons SJCP Boys' Lacrosse team finished with a final record of 12 and 7. They were led by a very strong and experienced group of

seniors. The team worked extremely hard to achieve

a first round bye in the MIAA play-offs and came up one goal short in the 8 semi-finals. The team had

four players selected as all MIAA players. The boys big wins against Towson Catholic, Baltimore Lutheran, and

Cardinal Gibbons. The
