a habit of EXCELLENCE

Habit ~ Latin and Old French

A settled or regular tendency or practice that is hard to give up and becomes more than just a norm. An automatic reaction to the situation at hand.

Over the last 61 years, thousands of Saint Joseph Men have laid the foundation for every student to come. All are guided by the virtues of Father André Coindre and the Brothers of the Sacred Heart, including formation, faith and service. Thousands of hours are spent focused on growth inside and outside the classroom, so the task at hand becomes more than just the norm. It becomes a tendency. A practice. A habit.

The Saint Joseph Habit of Excellence was built as a model for growth. A tradition that few get to experience. But, once you do, life as you know it is gone and your future becomes limitless.

Leadership

A Letter From the President

Dear

Saint Joe’s Community,

Believe it or not we are more than halfway through yet another successful school year. Where has the time gone? Over the course of the academic year I have been filled with pride and joy by the recognition and accomplishments achieved by our Saint Joseph Falcons. Our classrooms are filled with students pushing the limits of academic excellence. Our clubs continue to bring home awards, while our athletic programs earn division and conference championships, with dreams of statewide titles in the not too distant future. I could not be more proud of our young men.

While our students deserve a great deal of credit for these honors, they wouldn’t be where they are without the dedication of our Principal, Anne Rivera, and our Partners in Mission. They strive for excellence on a daily basis and it shows in the results.

The theme of the 2022 Annual Report is “The Habit of Excellence.” Back in 1961, when Saint Joe’s was founded by the Brothers of the Sacred Heart, excellence was the primary goal. Since then, we have taken that value from a goal and turned it into a habit. This publication contains just a few examples of the Saint Joseph Habit of Excellence. Some of the highlights in our report include:

25 Years of Brotherhood - Brother Gary Humes, S.C. has been a part of Saint Joseph history for more than 19 years. After getting his start in Metuchen back in the 1990s, Brother Gary returned to campus in 2014 and continues to place his mark on every student on campus. Brother Gary recently celebrated the 25th anniversary of his initial vows.

Falcons in the Military - Saint Joe’s has a rich history of sending our best and brightest on to military service. We spoke with three Falcons from the Classes of 2018, 2022 and 2023 about how their Saint Joseph journey to excellence took them to leadership opportunities in the military.

Young Alumni Giving - A commitment to giving back is one of the core formation lessons taught to Saint Joe’s students from the time they step foot onto campus during their freshman year. Once our students graduate, many continue to support the school in a variety of ways. We met with four recent graduates and discussed their commitment to supporting Saint Joe’s now and into the future.

Remembering the Past With the Future - Major parts of our past are remembered each year when scholarships are awarded by friends and family of Falcons past to young men just starting their Saint Joe’s journey. The Thomas “Pops” Ryan Scholarship memorializes a former Partner in Mission who made an impact on generations of Falcons.

I firmly believe that there is no better high school in New Jersey for young men than Saint Joseph. As you review the articles and information found in this Annual Report, I ask you to think back to your time or your son’s time at Saint Joe’s and recount the impact the journey to excellence had on you or your son. Our alumni and parents set the foundation for today’s students. Without you the Habit of Excellence would still just be a goal. Today, it is a lifestyle.

Gratefully,

25 Years of Service to the Brothers

From the moment any freshman walks onto the campus of Saint Joseph High School, they are immediately faced with the challenge of fulfilling the legacy set forth by the Brothers of the Sacred Heart and Father André Coindre.

As students settle into the riggers of student life at Saint Joe’s, one man stands above the rest as a teacher, motivator, confidant and mentor. That man is Brother Gary Humes, S.C.

“The start of any Saint Joe’s journey begins with Brother Gary,” Jack Pollota ‘23 said. “He is a motivator throughout the Saint Joseph campus and continues to shine the light on other students and administrators.”

Brother Gary has called Saint Joe’s home for over ten years, where he has proven to be more than just a teacher. His unconditional, loving self-gift has inspired countless young men who have walked the halls of Saint Joe’s.

Brother Daniel St. Jacques, S.C., though new to Saint Joe’s, has been a part of Brother Gary’s life for a long time, dating back to their time together in New Orleans. He sees the Saint Joe’s pride that Brother Gary carries around with him each day.

“Gary was always a very excited and passionate person,” Brother Dan said. “Now being a Brother alongside him at Saint Joe’s, I see him even more happy to just be around campus. Anyone from any grade level can come in and say ‘hi’ to him in his classroom. He remembers everyone’s name and loves being a part of this campus.”

In early November 2022, Saint Joseph High School honored Brother Gary for the 25th anniversary of his initial orders to the Brothers of Sacred Heart following mass on All Saints Day. Several students spoke about their relationship with their favorite teacher, coach and mentor, which surprised Saint Joseph High School President John G. Nolan, Jr.

“I had no idea of how great an impact Brother Gary has on his students beyond teaching freshman religion,” Nolan said. “To hear those young men share their personal reflections of Brother Gary was truly heartwarming. The impact he has on his students translates to the culture of brotherhood we see and experience everyday on our campus.”

Brother Gary represents the true character of a Brother of the Sacred Heart as well as a true brother of our school.

“He is a daily reminder to me of what the Brothers of the Sacred Heart expect from all Partners in Mission, to provide an outstanding faith-based education to our students in a caring environment,” Nolan said. “Brother Gary is a blessing and invaluable asset to the Saint Joseph community.”

Ask any member of the Saint Joseph community and they will tell you that Brother Gary has impacted this campus so much. He is a true leader on the journey to excellence for everyone.

Jayden Hunter is a senior at Saint Joseph High School. He is a member of the Advanced Journalism class and plans on studying communications in college.

The bond of Saint Joseph brothers is like no other. Whether it’s in the hallways, a classroom or on a playing field, the sense of connection is felt amongst every member of the exclusive community. For Christian Consales ‘18, Aidan Pierce ‘22, Charles Algier ‘23 and a troop of other past and current Falcons, the connection extends beyond the Saint Joseph High School campus and into another exclusive brotherhood - the United States Military.

Consales, Pierce and Algier all had military service aspirations prior to high school and knew that a strong academic and leadership foundation would be needed to attain their goals. Saint Joe’s provided those opportunities and more, leading to full scholarships to prestigious colleges/universities and United States service academies.

Consales said the competitive nature of academic programs at Saint Joe’s drives students to be successful inside and outside the classroom. This allowed him to always work towards his service goal and led to him being accepted to Indiana University on an ROTC scholarship.

academics, and life as a cadet, I feel Saint Joe’s helped prepare me for that.”

Consales, Pierce and Algier are the latest in a long line of Falcons that have gone on to the Armed Forces. Algier is one of two members of the Class of 2023 that was accepted to a military academy. His classmate, Michael Alvarez ‘23, committed to run cross country at the United States Military Academy at West Point. Algier will also be joining Varad Donwad ‘22 at the Naval Academy. Kody Robinson ‘21 and John Smolenski ‘22 attend the United States Merchant Marine Academy.

For Pierce, the challenges inside the classroom helped prepare him for the rigors of college at Virginia Tech as a ROTC Corps Cadet.

“Through a strong academic program, Saint Joe’s helped me prepare for the rigor of a military academy,” United States Naval Academy commit Algier said. “From AP courses to other advanced level academics, I have been able to consume
information that I will be working on in college to prepare for my future career in the military.”
“With the sense of brotherhood, there is a friendly level of competition that drives us to exceed,” Consales said. “We want to drive Saint Joe’s forward in a positive direction. The rigors of a strong academic program and the competition inside the classroom drives us to succeed.”
“Academics were a challenge at Saint Joe’s,” Pierce said. “I had to put in a lot of hard work and long hours to get the grades I wanted. Especially now as I’m in the Corps. as a cadet, having to balance my time,

The Next Generation of Giving

Saint Joseph High School has a rich history shaping the men of tomorrow. This is made possible through the generous donations of parents, friends of the school, and especially alumni. While some might assume that Falcons who have gone through the curriculum wait until later in life to give back, many young alumni begin their philanthropy early because of the strong sense of community and ties to the brotherhood.

“The Saint Joe’s brotherhood is men of the past, present, and future coming together to do their best work in a community that wants that,” Anthony Altobelli ‘21 said. “It’s a community that’s not typically found in other academic settings.”

Learning from the caring nature of the Brothers, students take to heart the importance of helping others. Young

alumni credit Saint Joe’s for their current successes, and give back to the school to provide those same life experiences to a younger generation.

“Saint Joe’s changed my outlook on life,” Michael Altobelli ‘22 said. “From the Trenton JusticeworX trip my freshman year to being a Kairos retreat leader my senior year, it was the little life lessons along the way that formed me into who I am today.”

The young alumni who give back, many of whom are still in college, credit these opportunities as an integral part of the Saint Joseph experience, and wish to assist their current Falcon brothers.

“The programs that are funded by alumni, such

as scholarships and JusticeworX, are great,” Jeffrey Lance ‘21 said. “Being someone who went on JusticeworX, I don’t want students to miss out on that experience and that journey because of financial reasons.”

Giving back and “paying it forward” are ideas imparted on students in a strong education with Catholic values.

“I have a brother in eighth grade who is going to Saint Joe’s next year. Giving back helps him and others like him to have more opportunities,” Brady Patterson ‘21 said. “Anyone that went to Saint Joe’s is part of the brotherhood, and being able to help someone

8 | ANNUAL REPORT 2022

that is younger than me is something I would love to do.”

The generosity of young alumni is a vital part of what allows Saint Joe’s to continue to thrive in its mission. Regardless of the size of the donation, every contribution to causes such as the Saint Joseph Annual Fund go a long way. Despite the many costs associated with life in college, the philanthropic spirit remains alive and well.

“Even though I am at a time in my life where there are a lot of expenses, whether it’s $5, $10, or $100, any amount helps,” Michael Altobelli ‘22 said. “If you’re looking back and deciding to give back, think of all the times that we had: times at lunch, times after school playing basketball, you’re helping someone get the same experience that we did.”

The Brothers Helping Brothers

When the Brothers of the Sacred Heart were founded in 1821 by Father André Coindre, their mission surrounded the education of youth who were at their “weakest” and “most deprived state.” Over 200 years later, that vocation is still prevalent on the Saint Joseph High School campus.

Scott Hunter ‘94 was the second of four Hunter brothers to attend Saint Joe’s in the 1990s. Growing up in a Catholic family where religious education was top of mind for his mother, Maria, the whole family attended Immaculate Conception School in Spotswood.

“Catholic education was something my mom instilled in us,” Scott Hunter said. “It was very important to us to continue that trend in high school.”

Scott’s older brother, Michael ‘92, led the way to Saint Joe’s for

the Hunter brothers. Scott followed a few years later during his junior year after transferring from another local Catholic school, a decision he believed was the best one he ever made.

“The first day of school I remember I felt like I had been there all along,” Scott said. “I immediately fit in and it was like home after the first day.”

The financial burden was not lost on the Hunter family. When it became too much, Maria Hunter scheduled a meeting with Saint Joe’s Principal Brother Ronald Cairns, S.C., fully intending on taking her sons out of the school. However, Brother Ronald did not let that happen.

“My mom told Brother Ronald that she didn’t think her other boys would be able to come because financially it wasn’t feasible,” Scott Hunter said. “Brother Ron said to her, ‘You

Scott Hunter ‘94 with his Falcon peers.

send your boys and don’t worry about the rest.’ I don’t know how much assistance was received. I suspect it was significant. I do know that the Hunter Boys received financial assistance to attend Saint Joe’s.”

Need-based financial assistance, like what the Hunter family received, is a core pillar of Saint Joseph High School and the Brothers of the Sacred Heart. During the 2021/2022 school year, $869,000 in scholarships and need-based assistance was awarded to current Saint Joe’s students, providing opportunities to families that could not afford tuition.

Because of the experience that the Hunter family received over 30 years ago, Scott Hunter makes it a priority to give back to the school that set him up for success as a financial advisor.

“It’s a place I feel made a permanent impact on my life, not just from an educational standpoint, but kind of who I am as a person,” Scott Hunter said. “The friendships I formed, I thought it was a completely unique place. I always felt indebted to the school. Even if they didn’t help me financially, I would still be giving in a major way. I always felt they helped us out in a time when we needed help and now I’m in a position where I can help to the extent that I do.”

A Legacy Continued

Generations of the past never truly disappear at Saint Joseph High School. This is especially the case for Thomas “Pops” Ryan, whose memorial scholarship has created a trail of opportunity for incoming freshmen every year.

Thomas “Pops” Ryan began his career as an English and Drama teacher at Saint Joe’s during the school’s early years in the mid-1960s. With each passing class, he grew to become one of the most beloved figures to walk the halls.

“My dad had a huge heart,” Thomas Ryan ‘72 said. “He loved Catholic education.

Once he started here, he ate, drank, and slept Saint Joe’s.”

Many students will recall his unique way of blending story telling, observation, and even humor into the way he taught his classroom.

“He had a special way to connect to his students,” Mike Mulqueen ‘72, a former coworker of “Pops”, said. “He was like everyone’s dad, concerned about his students as people, yet, he could joke around with the boys, being the professional all the time.”

“Pops” passed away in 1988, and he was one of the few laymen to receive the

great honor of being buried in the Saint Joe’s cemetery.

After his passing, the Ryan Family wanted to keep the spirit of his mission alive by creating a memorial scholarship in his name. This scholarship allows for future Falcons in need to be able to afford a life changing education like “Pops” gave to his students.

“The scholarship is about what he represented for Saint Joe’s,” Ryan said. “It’s what he tried to instill, a love for Catholic education, and tradition, the handing down of what he taught. It allows some students who need financial assistance to get it.”

12 | ANNUAL REPORT 2022

Thomas

As “Pops” impacted more students with each passing year in his classes, he is able to live on at Saint Joseph High School by assisting families to afford the Catholic education he held so close to his heart. The “Pops” Ryan scholarship is awarded to an incoming freshman and is renewable for the next three years if they remain in good standing with the school.

Funding a Need Assisting Formation Through Donations

One of the many advantages of a Saint Joseph education is a student’s ability to carve their own path forward through personalized course selection and a myriad of extracurricular activities.

One of the most popular extracurricular activities is Saint Joe’s award-winning Robotics team.

Founded in 2005, Robotics has grown from just a handful of students to its current roster of more than 60 members. The program is offered as both a club and a for-credit co-curricular activity, which allows students of all class years and interest levels to participate.

Joshua Oliveira ‘23, the captain of the Robotics team, believes the program’s popularity is due in large part to the array of disciplines needed to be successful, including engineering, mathematics and technology.

“Robotics fosters students’ critical thinking and problem-solving skills while developing a wide range of practical skills,” Oliveira said. “It gives students the opportunity to learn and grow, in areas not often covered in the classroom, and builds essential skills for success in the 21st century.”

According to co-moderator Mary Hutnick P ‘14/‘16, the Robotics Team is one of the most unique programs on campus, which provides students the opportunity to grow and try new things.

“We need students who can program, do electronics, pneumatics, CAD design, carpentry skills to build practice fields, writing essays for awards, good communication skills for judging presentations, creating videos as well as brochures,” Hutnick said. “Being able to think outside the box is often the best skill of all. The Robotics team fosters a growth mindset that can be used way beyond Saint Joe’s campus.”

Like every other school activity, the students on the Robotics team need to get creative each season to continue their successful run of robots. Each year, the program spends upwards of $20,000 to cover the cost of tournament entry fees, transportation and the actual robot build. While the team raises some money from holding their own middle school-aged tournaments, the bulk of the funding comes from the support of Robotics families and sponsorship opportunities.

One of the team’s goals has always been to design and build as many parts of the robot in the makerspace as possible. When you tour the Robotics Makerspace, you’ll see wood and metal pieces on tables, electrical wires and batteries in a constant state of construction and the previous year’s robot in the practice area where students are tinkering with the coding as the new bot is being built. One type of equipment that was desperately needed were 3D printers, which, if acquired, would allow for more pieces to be homemade, rather than purchased from pre-fabricators. This would also afford the team more room for trial and error

The robotics team requires skills in many different disciplines: from math to physics to technology and coding.

as prototype parts can be created and then tweaked to fit the final design.

John Shibles ‘65 has always been a forward thinker. From his success in the real estate industry to his collection of antique cars, Shibles knows a good investment when he sees one. During his annual visit to campus on the first day of school, he took a tour of the Robotics Makerspace and immediately could see the future potential of the program with the right equipment and technology.

“Nothing was operating at the time, but I could see the potential for what was happening,” Shibles said. “I thought that this was a program that made sense because of the technology that we live with today.”

When Shibles found out that financial support was needed to take the program to the next level, he jumped at the opportunity.

“Robotics is something that I think if it existed when I was a student, I would have been involved in it,” he said. “It’s an area that is of great interest to me and I think you can just see the kids having fun.”

With Shibles’ donation, the Robotics Team was able to purchase two 3D printers, as well as make other functional changes to the Makerspace, including proper organization and other fabrication machines. According to Oliveira, the new tools and organized space will help the program continue to deliver on its goal of “cultivating a collaborative learning environment.”

“This year, we 3D printed our wheel hubs, urethane molds, and intake housing, which has greatly improved our robot’s performance,” Oliveira said. “More importantly however, these new printers have given the team more creative freedom in how we design and

build our robot, while giving students a new opportunity to learn and grow. We can’t thank Mr. Shibles enough for his support.”

Why Do You Support Saint Joe’s?

“Formation.”

This single word can effectively describe the entirety of the Saint Joseph High School experience.

Across any given year, hundreds of alumni pass through the halls and reminisce about their times spent on campus.

“Saint Joe’s made me who I am in life.” These powerful words have been shared countless times from alumni spanning 61 years.

We owe this to the Founder of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart, Father André Coindre. His recognition of the importance of education and a strong moral code in forming a solid foundation for success regardless of means, created this supportive environment to learn and express your talents. The mantra to mirror the heart of Jesus goes a long

way as a life-guide regardless of your faith background.

Stanley Baldyga came to realize the true power of Saint Joe’s during a visit to campus on a sunny day in October 2021. Looking for a way to leave a lasting legacy, Stanley visited Saint Joe’s at the suggestion of his son, Thomas ‘78.

He wanted to find a way to contribute to the Saint Joseph community in memory of his late wife Dolores. Stanley and Dolores were very proud to have sent their only son, Thomas ‘78, to become a Falcon.

While touring campus in his military hat, many students stopped to thank Stanley for his service. Soon thereafter, while discussing the latest Saint Joe’s news, Stanley decided to make his contribution towards the award-winning academics that have prepared students for life since 1961. Through his gift, Saint Joe’s was able to outfit a classroom with a

new Dell electronic smart board that would provide thorough educational experiences for current and future students. A dogwood tree was also dedicated in front of the school in Dolores’ memory, creating a lasting legacy at Saint Joe’s.

Stanley Baldyga’s gift is just one way to support Saint Joe’s. In addition to giving your time or expertise to support current projects at the school, you can plan ahead without feeling a shift in your budget. There are so many ways to give and save at the same time.

For more information on unique ways to give to Saint Joe’s, please contact Nancy Alfano, Director of Advancement, by email at nalfano@stjoes.org or by phone at 732-549-7600 x208

A Letter From the Board

On behalf of Saint Joseph’s High School Board of Directors, I want to thank all Alumni, Parents, Partners in Mission and most of all our students for truly building on the Habit of Excellence this past year and going forward. By definition, a habit is a regular tendency or practice that is hard to give up. To say we have a habit of excellence also means that we as a board will never give up our pursuit of excellence for our school and community.

The Saint Joseph’s Habit of Excellence manifests itself in many ways. For example, our award winning Robotics Program, founded in 2005, has grown from five members to over 60. Through the generous help of John Shibles ’65, new 3D printers were purchased to allow for the fabrication of robotic parts in house, creating a new learning and design opportunity that didn’t previously exist.

I, along with several other Board members, had the opportunity to attend Brother Gary Humes S.C.’s 25th anniversary celebration attended by the entire student body and Brother Ronald Hingle S.C., Provincial for the U.S. Province of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart. What was most profound were the students who spoke about Brother Gary and the positive impact and mentorship Brother has had on them in their own development of excellence.

Scott Hunter ’94 and his brothers attended Saint Joe’s in the 1980’s and 90’s. While their family could not afford the tuition, the Brothers stayed true to finding a way to support those families who desire a Saint Joe’s education but struggled financially to make it happen. 30 years later, the Hunter family contributes to the Saint Joseph Annual Fund specifically for need-based financial assistance to help Falcons of tomorrow have the same excellent experience that they had in their time at school.

Older established scholarships, like the Thomas “Pops” Ryan Memorial Scholarship, continue to help students today, while brand new scholarships like the Brother Aldric Smith S.C. Memorial Scholarship, established in 2022 through a generous gift from Steve and Elaine Pozycki ‘69, ensure new opportunities for students going forward.

The entire Saint Joe’s community is proud of all of our graduates who have distinguished themselves with Military Service. Some of the most recent are Christian Consoles ’18 who received an ROTC Scholarship to Indiana and is now a lieutenant in the Army. Aiden Pierce ’22 attends Virginia Tech on an ROTC Scholarship and Charles Algier ’23 will attend the United States Naval Academy after Saint Joe’s. All three of these men attribute the Saint Joe’s brotherhood for their commitment to leadership and excellence. Thank you, gentlemen, for your service to our country.

Our Habit of Excellence is translating into more donors and greater donations to our mission. Last year 1,579 alumni donated to Saint Joe’s – a 17 percent increase from the previous year. The number of gifts was up 19.7 percent, and the total raised by our development efforts is up 14 percent to $934,578.

Academically, athletically, and in all phases of student life, because of your hard work and generous support, our school is as well positioned for excellence as perhaps any time in its history. Our increasing enrollment is a testament to the reality that more and more young men want to develop the “Habit” by attending Saint Joe’s. Once again, on behalf of your Board of Directors a sincere thank you for your continued support.

Sincerely,

The Saint Joseph Annual Fund provides the school with valuable financial resources that help us to support the day-to-day operations of the school. The continued support of this fund allows our School Leadership to maintain the integrity of our facilities, state-of-the-art technology, and programs that help to provide the best possible educational experience for our young men.

Through your generosity, we can provide:

• Academic Scholarships and Need-Based Financial Assistance

• Programs that support the “Saint Joe’s Difference”

• Formation Days – a program that addresses nontraditional educational subjects

• S.T.R.E.A.M. vs S.T.E.M.— A unique differentiator that adds Religion and the Arts to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics

• “Makerspace” for Robotics

• Competitive tuition and fees

• Partners in Mission (Faculty and Staff), the majority of whom have advanced degrees, who provide the academic excellence that prepares our students for life beyond Saint Joe’s

We thank the individuals listed on the following pages who have contributed to this fund and provide the financial support that allows us to continue our mission to the young men of Saint Joseph*
