Letter from Jake Henry Jr., President and Chief Executive Officer When trying to organize my thoughts for this letter, I found myself caught between two important themes: internal gratitude and external reassurance. I will do my best to cover both of these topics.

First I would like to take another opportunity to thank the women and men of Saint Francis Health System for their commitment and dedication to serving our patients and our community during this time of need. Over the past several months I have been extremely conscious that I never miss an opportunity to say thank you to our staff. Many people have learned new skills and set new goals for themselves during this time of social distancing—increasing the frequency of intentional words and acts of gratitude is one of my pandemic promises.

To the communities we serve and to our patients—we are here for you. Our commitment to high-quality care in a safe and healing environment has always been a priority and that pledge has not wavered. Throughout the region, there are Saint Francis Health System points of care ready to welcome you and partner with you to improve or maintain your health. A theme you will notice through several of the articles in this issue of Presence is the increasing number of ways for you to connect with the care you need from the name you trust. Whether you seek care virtually from your home or in person at a clinic, we are committed to providing the excellent patient experience and quality that is expected from our brand.

Initially our virtual care program was focused on primary care—through E-Visits and Video Visits. Now, we have expanded virtual access to our services and specialties in every way that we can. Saint Francis has always had an eye toward the future and growth of our virtual offerings is something that will continue for many years to come.

A foundational pillar of our virtual health program is that it is truly our program. All E-Visits and Video Visits offered by Saint Francis are provided by Saint Francis providers through either the Warren Clinic or through Laureate Psychiatric Clinic and Hospital. As eastern Oklahoma’s only locally owned and governed health system, providing care for Oklahomans by Oklahomans is our pledge—and has been since 1960.

Heartfelt Thanks for Vinita EMS and First Responders September 9th was a special day at Saint Francis Hospital Vinita...and a perfect opportunity to honor some very special people within the community.

On that particular Wednesday afternoon, staff members at Saint Francis Hospital Vinita gathered outside of the facility for a “drive-up” event. As EMS and first responders—including police, fire, ambulance, sheriff— began arriving at the hospital, they were each provided a delicious meal as heartfelt expressions of appreciation for serving the people of their community.

All in all, it was a day of friends and neighbors taking time out to recognize their fellow community partners—and personally thanking them for a job well done.

Looking for Healthcare?

Whether you choose an in-person physician visit or access virtual care from home, Warren Clinic and Laureate offer more ways for patients to access the healthcare services they need during the era of COVID-19.

Judging by the tens of thousands of patients who have already opted to utilize Warren Clinic Virtual Care to access primary care, specialty and urgent care services since March of this year, it’s safe to say that virtual health services have become part of our new normal.

While the direction of healthcare was already set on a trajectory towards advanced digital and expanded virtual health services across the board, the era of COVID-19 accelerated all of that.

Saint Francis and Warren Clinic have implemented video visits for patients to provide safe, efficient and convenient methods to get the care they need.

“At Saint Francis, we are blessed to have an administrative team and technology services that have already made great progress in the development of virtual health,” says Dr. Dana Davis, medical director of Urgent Care at the Warren Clinic Springer Building. “It’s been wonderful to see how the community has embraced the ease of virtual care, and more recently Urgent Care video visits. Patients of all ages really love it and we’ve received nothing but very positive feedback.”

Providing Care During COVID-19 Over the past several months, virtual care has been highly utilized by those with suspected cases of COVID-19. As the pandemic continues, and with flu season quickly approaching, video visits serve as a safe way for a patient to triage their symptoms, get an order for testing and further medical guidance.

“We have found video visits are effective in accessing patients who are exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms and directing them to where they need to be to receive appropriate care. What’s more, we’ve discovered that seeing patients who may have COVID-19 by video (rather than coming to an actual urgent care facility) goes a long way in lessening the likelihood of exposure to others,” says Dr. Davis.

For patient Maura Guten, CEO of Tulsa’s Child Abuse Network, the ability to access a virtual urgent care visit was a game changer for her and her family. In

late August, during a busy week at the Children’s Advocacy Center, she began to develop some upper respiratory symptoms and a headache. Knowing these were signs of a possible coronavirus infection, she knew she needed to distance herself from others and quarantine at home. “I was able to work remotely, but I wasn’t able to parent virtually. The convenience of being able to have an urgent care visit between work calls and caring for my kids was fantastic.”

“When I logged on, I was surprised and comforted to immediately recognize the doctor on the other end of the call. It’s reassuring to know that the person I’m seeing is part of the health system I’ve been going to for most of my life,” Guten added, “Warren Clinic had access to my medical history through MyChart. The doctor evaluated my symptoms, quickly ordered lab testing and provided a care plan and instructions.”

It’s not only safety, but convenience that is drawing more and more patients to seek virtual care services—

especially Warren Clinic Urgent Care. Recent statistics cited by the Saint Francis Institute for Emerging Technologies indicated that more than 70,000 video visits have taken place since implementation of the program this year.

That adds up to a lot of time and miles saved for many patients traveling to and from appointments.

“Depending on their health status or condition, most patients still should be seen in person, but for minor or acute concerns, Warren Clinic Virtual Urgent Care enables us to take care of our patients as if we were in the same room with them,” says Dr. Davis. “There’s a wide array of symptoms that can be actively accessed through Video Visits, such as examining a patient’s throat; monitoring breathing patterns or inspecting skin tones.”

“At Warren Clinic, we anticipate great things on the horizon with this platform of care. By year-end, we plan to expand even further by providing 24/7 access to our urgent care services,” said Dr. Davis.

“When that happens, it means no matter where you live in Oklahoma, patients will soon be able to access Warren Clinic Urgent Care anytime, day or night.”

Laureate Psychiatric Clinic and Hospital:

Virtual Care Services for Behavioral Health

In the earliest days of COVID-19, Laureate experienced an immediate uptick in face-to-face patient visits.

Then, as the pandemic wore on and fears of leaving home became more pronounced, an abrupt decrease in patient visits ensued. To the Laureate team, this clearly indicated their patients’ fears and concerns about leaving home were preventing them from receiving the treatment they desperately needed.

“We knew above all else, we had to meet our patients’ needs,” said Brandon Keppner, executive director, Laureate Psychiatric Clinic and Hospital. “So, we moved as quickly as possible to put the pieces in place to provide a virtual style of care, (e.g., video visits). Thankfully, the majority of our patients responded well to this—and for those who struggled, we accommodated their needs as safely and effectively as possible. In many instances, patients who were initially unsure about video visits are now quite comfortable with this type of care.”

When Laureate first began offering video visits, about 75 percent of its outpatient visits were conducted virtually—which more recently have been holding steady at about 60 percent.

“Our patients seem to really appreciate having this option. Generally, we’ve found that whether a patient prefers a video visit—or to meet in person— depends entirely on that individual, and on the type of work we are doing with them,” Keppner said. “For the past 10 to 12 years, I’ve heard talk about a virtual

healthcare trend in behavioral health. It never really took hold because of specific rules and requirements—which were recently loosened due to COVID-19. My hope is that we can continue to provide virtual care—particularly during these unsettled times—for patients throughout the area.”

As with most everything else this year, the upcoming flu season will be viewed through a lens of concern with COVID-19 still in our midst.

The prospect of having these viruses circulating at the same time, one currently without a vaccine and very similar in symptoms, is weighing heavily on the minds of healthcare providers everywhere. It will take a concerted effort on everyone’s part to mitigate what could potentially be a challenging situation.

To reduce the impact on our communities, hospitals and healthcare systems, doctors agree that it’s imperative that everyone older than six months of age gets a flu vaccination as recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

“Influenza and COVID-19 share many overlapping symptoms, making it difficult to discern between one another,” said Dr. Debra Murray, epidemiologist and medical director of Saint Francis Infection Control Services.

“It could be very possible and detrimental if a person got both the flu and COVID-19.

We don’t know exactly how that would play out, which is why we highly recommend getting the flu vaccine this year.”

Even with the ongoing situation of COVID-19 this season, flu prevention measures remain the same at Saint Francis Health System.

“While we’re learning more each day about COVID-19, we have decades of research at our disposal in regards to flu prevention, including modeling and tracking it’s impact in other countries,” said Dr. Murray. “Our flu prevention measures remain consistent and we will continue to coordinate in the best way to get vaccinations out to the community.”

“This year the community flu vaccination efforts, led by Warren Clinic, will be different with drive-thru vaccination services with social distancing and universal masking in place,” said Dr. Lance King, medical director of Warren Clinic. “Saint Francis Health System also has the goal of one hundred percent vaccination among its employees to provide the best, safest coverage as healthcare providers.”

DIFFERENCES AND SIMILARITIES BETWEEN FLU AND COVID-19 COVID-19 and the flu are both contagious respiratory illnesses caused by different viruses—and symptoms of each are so very similar.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), if you are showing symptoms of either the flu or COVID-19, it's important to contact your physician for triage, lab test orders and care guidance.

While the efficacy of flu vaccination may vary from year to year, based on the circulation of various strains of influenza, the overall impact on the nation’s healthcare system is significant. In a time where COVID-19 has already taxed and overwhelmed healthcare providers, helping ease that pressure by simply getting a flu shot is one way the public can support front line workers.

“The CDC recommends everyone get a flu shot in October if possible,” said Dr. King. “The reasoning behind this is that we cannot predict exactly when the virus will arrive and early distribution will allow people to build antibodies to influenza which can remain effective up to five or six months later.”

If you are unsure of your health status in regards to getting the flu vaccine, speak with your primary care physician. There are different vaccination options available, with each providing valuable coverage during a flu season. For example, the intranasal vaccine is indicated only for healthy persons ages 2 through 49.

“Egg allergy is no longer a contraindication to getting a flu shot,” said Dr. Murray.

“Pregnant women and people who are immunocompromised especially need the flu shot, they just should not get the live attenuated (intranasal) vaccine.”

“The most important message is that the flu vaccine is really for overall public health.”

Certainly the concern of a “twindemic” this flu season has healthcare providers planning early for the fall and winter.

However, there is a glimmer of hope to the moment, which are the current pandemic safety and hygiene measures already in place for COVID-19.

Wearing a mask, washing your hands frequently as well as cleaning highly used surfaces and practicing social distancing could contribute to lessening the severity of this year’s flu cases.

“There are reports coming in from health experts in the southern hemisphere where the flu seems to be having less of an impact than previous years. They think it’s secondary to people practicing social distancing, masking and more robust hygiene because of the pandemic,” said Dr. Murray.

That’s a good thing. One that we should all continue to be vigilant about each day.

For the staff at the Saint Francis Cancer Center, the process of providing the best patient care begins with listening.

Not only is it listening to the patient’s needs—but what patients and their families want as well.

Listening is also the basis for how Saint Francis continues to grow and build as the region’s leading healthcare system. It’s part of the vision behind the current expansion of the Saint Francis Cancer Center. It’s patient-inspired and driven.

“After reviewing patient feedback as well as industry best practices, we learned that cancer patients and their families would like to have most of their treatment services performed at one location,” said Nancy Thomas, director of oncology services. “When we acquired this facility near 51st and Garnett, moving our oncology services under one roof was part of our long-term strategic planning goals.”

For patients and their families, having all of these key services in one location means an enhanced level of convenience and continuity of care in a warm, welcoming environment.

The Saint Francis Cancer Center provides a single point of care for the following services: • office with medical oncology team; • nurse navigator team; • radiation oncology and therapy; • chemotherapy/immunotherapy; • laboratory; • imaging, PET and CT;

• outpatient pharmacy; • oncology rehabilitation (physical, occupational and speech therapies as well as a lymphedema clinic); • access to genetic services; • dietitian/nutrition planning; • outpatient palliative care; • support groups; and • social services.

“The first phase of the expansion was to build out and move radiation oncology from Saint Francis Hospital to this facility,” said Thomas. “This transition was completed in February of this year.

Now, we’re moving into the renovation

stage of the existing facility building which we hope to have completed by early 2022.”

Improving the Patient’s Journey through Care Equally important to having all of our services in one location, was the thoughtful consideration that has gone into the construction and renovation of the facility. In addition to housing the latest, most advanced oncology equipment, the expanded Saint Francis Cancer Center features an enhanced patient journey and resources with an eye toward patient comfort.

“There’s really a focus on the simplification of care and helping create a patient experience that’s calming and conducive to their treatment,” said Dr. Vicki Baker, medical oncologist with Warren Clinic.

The expanded space has a new pathway design that allows patients to get from one appointment to the next with greater ease. “Not only will their journey be familiar each time, they’ll also see familiar faces,” continued Dr. Baker. “They will see the same nurses, oncologists and staff. That’s important to patients so they can focus on their care.”

Bringing the Team Closer Together The expansion also allows for greater collaboration between the medical oncology staff. “Cancer care requires a team approach. From tumor boards to interacting with radiation oncologists and medical oncologists, surgeons, it all provides a broader picture of the patient,” said Dr. Chelsea Thomas, medical oncologist. “Being under one roof will make collaboration between the different specialties even better than it is now. We can discuss best treatment options and share different ideas.”

SAINT FRANCIS CANCER CENTER “It really provides more patientcentered care,” continued Dr. Thomas. “Communication is such a huge part of medicine. You can only succeed with your team. Fortunately, Saint Francis has great leadership that helps bring everything together.”

When it comes to bringing everything together, that includes caring for patients’ spiritual wellbeing, too. The health system’s mission is to extend the presence and healing ministry of Christ.

This ambition is also at the heart of the Saint Francis Cancer Center expansion.

“At Saint Francis, the mission is really lived out. It’s a ministry at work,” said infusion nurse Treatha Rayford, RN, OCN®. “I’m grateful and look forward

to having the opportunity to serve patients every day. I get a chance to share the love of Christ and pray with them, if desired, allowing them to share what’s on their hearts.”

As the expansion and renovations near completion, the Saint Francis Cancer Center will serve more patients throughout the community and beyond, serving as a beacon of hope for those battling against such a challenging disease.

“This has always been our goal,” said Thomas. “And this facility will allow us even greater opportunities to provide more patients with excellence in clinical and personalized care in an even more supportive, convenient and nurturing environment.”

RADIATION ONCOLOGY MAKES ITS NEW HOME AT THE

SAINT FRANCIS CANCER CENTER

There are few medical disciplines as precise and nuanced as radiation oncology. Every treatment is unique to each patient, each time. As variables change, so does the plan.

“With respect to the individual patient, that’s one of the wonders of radiation oncology. With the exception of a small, handful of medications, there aren’t many drugs with doses that are custom calculated in their delivery to you in your unique situation,” said Dr. Charles E. Stewart, radiation oncologist. “We use energy to kill cancer cells. We can adjust how fast we administer it, where we target, how big the radiation field is, the dose size and the time intervals. We base the radiation treatment on a patient’s body at the time of treatment.”

It’s a process that demands teamwork.

Working closely within their own department, as well as with medical oncologists and surgeons, gives Dr. Stewart and his colleague Dr. Stephen Sack that opportunity for greater insight into a particular patient’s overall care and circumstance. Communication is 20

paramount to providing the appropriate treatment plan.

As part of the ongoing effort for increased clinical knowledge and understanding, the radiation oncology team participates in several multidisciplinary conferences with other physicians each week.

According to radiation oncology dietitian, Valerie Allison, the move has consolidated many appointments for patients, improving their overall experience and care.

However, it is the department's recent move from Saint Francis Hospital to the newly expanded Saint Francis Cancer Center that will prove to be strategically important to specific patient education. “When it comes to collaboratively treating patients with complex issues, having your partners in treatment in close proximity facilitates conversations around care. Being together under one roof leads to a more dynamic and responsive system to meet individual patient needs,” said Dr. Stewart.

“Personally, I’m able to meet patients where they are,” said Allison. “I work closely with Lindsay Rehm, a nurse navigator, every week to check in on patients’ progress and concerns, helping them become nutritionally sound to handle their treatment better.”

The move also provides their department with a number of upgrades to help deliver the latest treatment.

footprints, including our new linear accelerators, as well as larger patient rooms to administer treatment,” Dr. Stewart said. “It’s not so limiting, and there’s room to grow.”

“We have new treatment tables that allow us to pitch, roll and yaw,” continued Dr. Stewart. “They allow us to make necessary adjustments, providing additional flexibility in working with patients.”

The new facility is an outward reflection of the health system’s internal commitment to patient care. Which is to say, with or without all of the bells and whistles, it’s the radiation oncology team that really make the difference.

“The best quality of the department is our team of individuals: physicists, dosimetrists,

nurses, nurse navigators and front desk personnel. They are all emotionally warm and receptive. There’s just an excellence of care in all they do,” said Dr. Stewart.

“We are fortunate to have people who are intellectually agile and committed to doing what’s right even if that takes more effort.

That’s the key to practicing oncology at Saint Francis.”

It’s a department without borders or barriers. Just a singular focus on providing total care for those they are serving and healing.

“I fell in love with how radiation oncology builds relationships with other providers to pull it all together for their patients,” said Lindsay Rehm, RN, OCN®, radiation oncology nurse navigator. “As a nurse navigator, I help coordinate the patients’

journey. From scheduling appointments to identifying resources to answering questions—I organize all the components of care. I’m an advocate for the patient, minimizing any burdens or obstacles. It’s a role that Saint Francis, and Radiation Oncology in particular, really supports.”

In terms of breast cancer, Warren Clinic plastic and reconstructive surgeons, Dr. Kevin Kunkel, Dr. Wyatt Ho and Dr. Timothy Browne specialize in breast reconstruction surgery, a procedure which builds a new breast or restores a breast to near normal shape after breast cancer surgery.

“Once the best and most effective plan has been established, we meet with the patient to make sure they understand every aspect of their treatment and what to expect going forward,” Dr. Johnson says. “I think everyone on our treatment team would agree that the opportunity to educate and really talk at length with our patients is one of the most rewarding things we do.

Essentially, we are here to guide our patients through this journey to the other side so they can resume their wonderful lives.”

Genetically speaking “Rewarding” is a word that also crops up when Lori Carpenter describes her job as the health system’s genetic counselor.

“Educating, talking with and simply being there for patients are by far some of the most rewarding parts of my job,” she says.

To say Carpenter’s domain is complex is an understatement. To say she feels she is

exactly where she belongs, is as well. The overall goal of genetic counseling is not only risk assessment, but also to explain cause/inheritance of a disorder, availability of testing, prognosis and management/ treatment options. As the only genetic counselor in all of eastern Oklahoma, she says she is thankful to be at Saint Francis and accessible to patients.

“I so appreciate Saint Francis’ commitment to providing patients with this level of comprehensive cancer care. Yes, genetics are complicated—which is why having the opportunity to sit down face-to-face and one-on-one with my patients is important,” Carpenter says. “Our mission is to determine why a person developed cancer at an early age, or why they have such a strong family history of cancer in the first place. We ask ourselves other questions too such as, ‘what else do we need to be proactive about in this person’s screening?’ and ‘who else in the family would benefit by knowing this information?’”

Calm reassurance Radiologist Dr. Brooke Caldwell is Saint Francis Health System’s dedicated specialist in breast health. She says any way you look at it, having an annual mammogram is definitely the best shot at maintaining breast

health. “For the women who get annual screenings and in the instances where we do find a breast cancer that is under 14 millimeters (equivalent to a half-inch), statistics show that 99% of those women are treated successfully,” Dr. Caldwell says. “The more advanced and precise our screening technology becomes, the more cancer we are able to detect—and we consider it our duty to find it all.”

Dr. Caldwell, who joined Saint Francis’ team just this past April, is unique in that she has specialized exclusively in breast radiology for the past 30 years. “As soon as I began studying the field of radiology—and more specifically breast radiology—I had no doubt it was the ideal specialty for me,” she says. “And, as soon as I joined the Saint

Francis breast health team earlier this year, I had a similar feeling. I am so proud to be at Saint Francis and to be a part of this amazing team.”

Eboni’s Story One patient's journey through breast cancer diagnosis and treatment

It was an October morning in 2017, and as far back as 32-yearold Eboni could recall, she had been in the habit of doing breast self-exams. Yet, this day was different. On this particular day, she felt a lump in her left breast.

“Of course, you know exactly what you’re checking for when you do a self-exam; but you don’t necessarily want to find it,” she says. So, Eboni decided to keep about her routine for the next few days—that is, until she got the nerve up to check it again.

“Yep, the lump was still there. I guess I’d been in denial because I kept telling myself it was probably just a swollen lymph node,” she says.

God’s Work A few days later, Eboni and her sister were out and about in their hometown of McAlester, when something caught her eye.

“As we drove by an area church, we noticed something unusual. The church was having a huge health fair that day and offering free health exams—tests ranging from blood pressure and thyroid checks, to breast exams,” Eboni says. “I’m a religious person and if that wasn’t God’s work to put us on that road and at that place that day, I don’t know what is!”

What followed is what she had suspected all along—and then some. “A doctor at the health fair examined me and found not one, but two lumps in my left breast. They recommended I follow up with a doctor as soon as possible. There was no denying it now; so, my next step was to make an appointment at Warren Clinic McAlester,” she says.

After a mammogram, an ultrasound examination and finally a biopsy performed by radiologists and other doctors at the local Warren Clinic, Eboni headed home to await a call from the physician.

“Sooner than I expected, a Warren Clinic nurse navigator named Sharon called me at home to give me the results. She was so considerate and kind when she confirmed a breast cancer diagnosis. Even though I pretty much knew it, I was in shock to hear this news. Sharon was so patient and caring as she answered all of my immediate questions. Then she helped me set up my first appointment with Warren Clinic breast surgeon, Dr. Chad Johnson—and, speaking of ‘God’ moments, I believe this was another one,” she says.

“Something drew me in from the first moment I walked into the Saint Francis breast surgeons’ office in Tulsa. It felt so peaceful—I just knew it was where I was supposed to be. Dr. Johnson and the entire staff were so kind and accommodating to me and my family members who came with me on those first visits. Dr. Johnson had said, ‘Bring everyone you want to! We’ll be covering a lot of information—so the more ears, the better!’ I really appreciated that because we are talkers and, believe me, we asked a ton of questions,” Eboni says.

The Treatment Plan

Looking Back

After Eboni’s diagnosis and biopsy in October 2017, a computerized axial tomography (CAT) scan and prognosis of treatment soon followed. Then, on December 15, 2017, her treatment began with her first round of chemotherapy— the first of what would be a total of 13 rounds altogether.

Today, as Eboni reflects on her overall experience, certain snapshots come to light—for instance, the day she grabbed some clippers and asked her husband, Kevin, to please shave off all of her hair.

“It’s what I wanted to do since my hair was falling out anyway. But, what stands out in my mind is when Kevin was finished, he looked at me and told me I was beautiful,” she says.

“Following the chemotherapy treatments, I finally had the opportunity to ring the bell on April 9, 2018. Then, on May 22, 2018, I received a double mastectomy with reconstructive surgery,” she says. “Today, I am happy to say I am doing very well and so grateful for all of the wonderful, compassionate care I received throughout every step of this journey.”

Or—early in her diagnosis when her young son pulled her aside and said he knew she was sick but wanted to know “the name of it.” Eboni says her son is an old soul and even though he was only four years old at the time, he needed to know the truth.

“Once he did, his eyes got real big and he told me he was glad I had finally said it. He also said if the rest of the family had to go through this, he needed to know too—so he could go through it with us.”

When asked what she might say to someone else embarking on a similar journey, Eboni answers without hesitation. “I’d tell them to focus on what they have, rather than what they don’t have,” she says. “I’d also encourage them to take it day to day and not project ahead—because nobody knows what’s ahead except God. And to let God be their comfort because whether or not you realize it, He’s always by your side.”

In the Here and Now Eboni continues: “Then and now, I am so thankful for my family for being there and supporting me through this—and also for Warren Clinic McAlester and Saint Francis.

I can’t imagine ever going anywhere else.

Every single person I encountered during my experience at Saint Francis was so nice. The doctors, nurses, staff members— everyone! And I love the way the health system is all connected and that people who live here in McAlester—or in other communities in the area—are able to receive the amazing healthcare.”

New Breast Center Provides Streamlined Continuity of Care Since Saint Francis Hospital Muskogee’s new breast center officially opened in October, residents of Muskogee—as well those in neighboring communities—are benefiting from much easier access to the health system’s comprehensive breast health services.

“The location of our new breast center is conveniently located on-site in the newly renamed Xavier Building directly in front of Saint Francis Hospital Muskogee—as opposed to its previous location on our East campus,” says Nora Rosenke, manager, Oncology and Breast Center, Saint Francis Hospital Muskogee. “Patients are quickly realizing how much easier it now is for them to get their mammograms here. And if additional testing is required, we can quickly get it scheduled and send them to our radiologist down the hall—rather than five miles down the road.”

Room to Grow The doctors and staff members at the Saint Francis Hospital Muskogee Breast Center are elated about the opening of their new facility—and also about how it will continue to enhance their patients’ care well into

the future. The new breast center currently features two mammography units—with plenty of room to add a third unit in the near future.

Advanced Diagnostic and Screening Technology In addition to mammography units, Saint Francis Hospital Muskogee Breast Center is also equipped with other advanced diagnostic and screening devices including breast MRI and ultrasound (for women with dense breast tissue), as well as Automated Breast Volume Scanner (ABVS), which aids physicians in detecting breast cancer in certain patients.

“We are extremely excited that area patients can now receive Saint Francis breast health services in such a streamlined and accessible manner,” Rosenke says.

“In addition to serving people who live in Muskogee, we also believe the new Saint Francis Hospital Muskogee Breast Center will serve as a regional resource and a more convenient option for folks living in nearby rural communities.”

Is Walking or Running Right for You?

Fall is upon us with the promise of crisp, cool days on the horizon. If you haven’t already, now might be the perfect time to give running or walking a try. Both activities provide many health benefits, as well as opportunities to enjoy plenty of fresh air and the great outdoors— a welcome antidote we all can appreciate, particularly during COVID-19.

It’s a given that walking and running are two convenient modes of physical activity that don’t require much more than a great pair of athletic shoes. All one needs to do is grab those sneakers and head out the door. But have you ever wondered how walking measures up to running in terms of health benefit?

All Things Being Equal “First of all, people who don’t like to run should feel no shame because both walking and running involve movement and mobility that are good for our joints.

Both of these weight-bearing activities help to cycle the joint fluid through—in effect, cleaning out some of the inflammatory mediators that can develop into arthritis.

From an orthopedic standpoint, I don’t consider one to be better than the other. It’s just a matter of choosing which appeals to you the most,” says Dr. Andrew Ebert, Warren Clinic orthopedic sports surgeon who specializes in arthroscopic treatment of joint injuries. “And as far as

running is concerned, many assume it will cause damage to their joints. I think it is important for people to know there are no studies to support that. In fact, running may be protective against osteoarthritis and the need for related surgeries. What we do know, however, is that long-term participation in high contact sports such as football and basketball can cause joint damage.”

So here are the obvious differences between running and walking: running is faster, which makes for a higher intensity workout, a more exaggerated increase in heart rate and a greater number of calories burned. Whereas walking is a lower-impact activity that is likely to be a safer and more sustainable option—plus a longer walk can achieve the same calorie burn as running. If you want to ramp up your walking routine, consider walking in different terrain, utilize hills or inclines and pick up the pace. No matter which one is your choice of exercise, walking or running, the point is that they both have tremendous health benefits.

Benefits of Walking and Running: • Helps prevent and manage chronic diseases such as cardiovascular diseases and Type 2 diabetes • Helps promote skeletal health • Aids in increasing blood flow throughout the body • Promotes better, more sound sleep • Supports weight management with current exercise recommendation which for adults is 30 minutes of moderate aerobic activity five days a week; or 20 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity three days a week • Lowers blood pressure and cholesterol levels • Helps relieve stress and enhance mood

Easy Does It If you decide to give running a try, Dr. Ebert offers this word of caution: “It’s important to start out slow and steadily build up your activity level, pace and distance. If you’ve never been a runner before, you don’t want to go out there and try to run five miles right off the bat—because if you do, you’ll be prone to experience overuse injuries most likely in your knees or feet,” he says. “In addition, I recommend checking out a ‘Walk to Run’ program, which can be a great tool and very easy to find online, as well as getting a physical therapist or personal trainer involved as you begin a running program.”

Stay the Course For those who opt to walk, Dr. Ebert suggests the following: “Having a partner or ‘walking buddy’ keeps you on course and accountable. You can set fitness goals together. And of course, there’s always the dog! Take your dog along on your walk, and they will love you all the more,” Dr. Ebert says.

“Then again, there are people who don’t want to hit the pavement at all.

That’s OK, because there are other ways to get a good cardio workout—such as water aerobics, using a stationary bike or elliptical machine. There are so many great options available out there today.”

Listen to Your Body With any fitness program, it’s important to pay attention to any aches or pains you may be experiencing.

“I always tell my patients to listen to their bodies—more specifically to their joints. Whenever you notice pain or swelling, it’s your body trying to tell you something,” Dr. Ebert says. “This may mean it’s time to scale back your routine for a while—or it could mean it’s time for a new pair of athletic shoes. You’d be surprised how many times worn out shoes are the culprit. After all, everything starts with the foot and goes upward. If the foot is having problems, the knee, hip, back can also get out of alignment. The take-home message is this: Regardless of what fitness path you take, it is important to stay active with an exercise you enjoy and at a pace that is right for you.”

Warren Clinic Orthopedic Urgent Care Warren Clinic is pleased to introduce a new option for adult and pediatric patients needing same-day, urgent care for orthopedic issues. The new Warren Clinic Orthopedic Urgent Care opened September 1, and will be staffed by the providers of Warren Clinic Orthopedic Surgery and Sports Medicine. The clinic will be located in the Natalie Medical Building near 65th and Yale in Tulsa.

The specialists at Warren Clinic Orthopedic Urgent Care are able to evaluate, diagnose and treat common orthopedic issues and injuries in adults and children such as: • ankle, foot, hip, shoulder and knee injuries; • muscle pain; • strains and sprains; • painful, swollen or injured joints; • back and neck pain; • fractures; and/or • sports and athletic injuries.

No appointment or referral is needed.

Walk-ins welcome.
