Prep Co-Curricular Clubs and Activities
LENT TERM 2025
St. Edmund’s offers pupils a wide range of co-curricular clubs and activities. These may be sporting, artistic, dramatic, creative, musical or cultural in nature and are led by our energetic and committed teaching staff.
The choice of clubs varies each term and pupils are encouraged to be involved in a broad range of activities to explore new opportunities and try new things.
All clubs and activities are open to both boys and girls unless otherwise indicated.

ART AND DESIGN
Art Club (Forms 5 & 8)
Art Club is an opportunity for pupils to have fun whilst also learning new skills. Each term, there is a different project which may be based upon painting skills, crafts or sculpture. Past projects have included self-portraits using clay, stained ‘glass’ panels and still life paintings.
DANCE AND DRAMA
Street Dance* (Forms 5 & 6)
Run by Miss Danni of the Lannoy School of Performing Arts. Street Dance is a style of dance that started in America with funk and jazz dance and encompasses a broad range of styles including popping, locking, breakdance and commercial dance. Our street dance classes encourage pupils to be creative and find their own voice within new and exciting choreography. St. Edmund’s pupils absolutely LOVE this class and it is attended by as many boys as it is girls.
Production Rehearsals (Forms 7 & 8)
For children taking part in a school production, Production Rehearsals take place after school and gives children value time to rehearse with the Drama and Music departments.
Showcase (Forms 7 & 8)
Specifically designed for our talented Forms 7 and 8 pupils, this anticipated event to be held in the Summer term promises to be a delightful evening filled with a diverse array of musical performances, dramatic scenes, and expressive dances, all highlighting the unique abilities and creative passions of our pupils.
Rehearsals for this Showcase will commence at the start of the Lent term, providing ample time for our young performers to refine their craft. These sessions will offer ng an enriching environment for collaboration and artistic growth. The culmination of their hard work will be showcased in a performance scheduled for early in the Summer term, an occasion sure to be filled with excitement and pride .
ENRICHMENT
Chess Club (Forms 5 & 8)
Chess Club is run throughout the year with sessions on Tuesdays in the Michaelmas term aimed specifically at beginners, with Thursday sessions offered to more proficient pupils who just want to play against a variety of opponents.
Each session begins with a teaching aspect looking at topics such as; ‘how the pieces move’, ‘castling, hanging pieces’, ‘defending’, ‘basic opening’s and ‘end games’. Pupils then have time to play each other.
In the Lent term we run the St. Edmund’s Chess Championships and in the Summer term, both sessions (Tuesdays and Thursdays) are available to pupils of all ages and abilities on the proviso that they have a registered account with Chess.com. This does not need to be the paid for premium version but can be the basic free version.
Pupils will have the option to play virtually against bots or on-line live matches and will also have the opportunity to play on the physical boards.
Coding Club
(Forms 5 & 8)
At Coding Club, we make learning about computers super fun! So, if you’re excited about any of these awesome topics, come join us. It’s like a journey into the digital world, where you become a computer whiz while having a ton of fun with your friends. Don’t miss out – let’s code, create, and explore together.
Crochet Club (Forms 6
- 8)
Crochet Club gives pupils a place of tranquility, peace and refuge. It allows them to learn a skill that provides them with a sense of purpose, whether that’s understanding how to do a double crochet or how to piece together a toy animal!
Dungeons & Dragons (Forms 7 & 8)
Dungeons & Dragons is a fantasy roleplaying game which has become a hugely popular mainstream hobby in recent years. It is an immersive game which offers players an opportunity to act out a character and journey through imaginary adventures narrated by a Dungeon Master. Not only does it encourage imagination, it also develops collaboration and problem-solving skills as the players have to work together to overcome traps, fight monsters and navigate social encounters with non-player characters (NPCs).
Jewellery Making Club (Forms 7 & 8)
Pupils can relax and get creative by making earrings, bracelets, and necklaces in a calm and chilled atmosphere. It’s the perfect way to unwind, make something special for Christmas or thoughtful gifts for loved ones – all while supporting health and wellbeing.
Journalism Club (Forms 7 & 8)
Journalism Club provides pupils with the opportunity to try a variety of skills. This could be copywriting, editing, photography, and interviewing. Pupils work together on topics for that term; they are taught to be bold with their questioning, creative with their writing and collaborative with their team to get the job done.
Lego Club (Forms 5 & 6)
Lego Club is a place for children to come and switch off from the school day and immerse themselves into the world of Lego. The children create some wonderful models - from stables for their horses to full spaceships! We have created Lego Club to ensure there is space for children to go to that is away from the playground if they need it.
Maths Challenge Club (Forms 7
& 8)
Recommended for anyone who enjoys maths and wants to push themselves a bit further. The Maths Challenge Club is a competition organised by www.UKMT.org.uk , which focuses on intriguing math questions and problem-solving. In the club, pupils practice questions from past competitions and collaborate to discover elegant solutions to these problems. Pupils have one hour to solve 25 questions, although typically around 10 correct answers will earn them a certificate. Bronze, silver and gold certificates will be awarded to those who perform sufficiently well.
Touch Typing (Forms 5 - 8)
At St. Ed’s, we believe Touch Typing is an essential life skill. We use English Type which is an online programme which uses a unique colour coding to teach and improve typing skills. The programme builds muscle memory and ensures good progress.
Warhammer
(Forms 5 - 8)
Warhammer Club is dedicated to the tabletop war games produced by Games workshop. Pupils build, paint and play with armies set in the fantasy and sci-fi worlds of Warhammer. Most club sessions are dominated by what participants call ‘the hobby’, the building and painting of the various infantry, tanks, and monsters but pupils also take part in casual games, senior run leagues and painting competitions. Many pupils have a favourite faction they play for years and enjoy the rich backstory shared across magazines, books and videos.
Pupils can purchase Warhammer direct from Warhammer stores and online but free starters are given to us as a registered Warhammer Alliance school. Community paints and brushes are available to help pupils get started.
MUSIC
Chapel Choir (Forms 5 - 8)
AUDITION
For dedicated singers in Forms 5 to 8, the Chapel Choir performs at school services, special events, and external engagements. Through auditions, pupils demonstrate their commitment and musicality, receiving professional vocal coaching and performance opportunities that enrich their singing journey.
M:Tech Club (Forms 5 & 6)
Music Technology (MTech) invites students in Forms 3 to 6 to dive into the world of digital music creation and production. Using modern software and tools, participants learn to compose, edit, and produce tracks while exploring the technical and creative aspects of music-making.
Music Therapy (Forms 5 - 8)
INVITATION ONLY
Music Therapy provides a safe, nurturing environment where students in Forms 5 to 8 use music to explore emotions, build confidence, and develop social skills. program supports wellbeing through creativity and the power of musical expression.
Orchestra (Forms 5 - 8)
Orchestra Club invites Intermediate to Advanced instrumentalists in Forms 5 to 8 to collaborate on diverse repertoire spanning classical, film, and popular music. Weekly rehearsals focus on ensemble skills, musicality, and performance readiness for concerts and school events.
Rock Band (Forms 5 - 8)
Younger rock enthusiasts in Forms 5 to 8 can unleash their creativity and learn to work as a band in this exciting club. Students experiment with popular music styles, developing performance techniques while building confidence and camaraderie.
Show Choir (Forms 5 - 8)
The Show Choir offers pupils in Forms 5 to 8 the chance to combine vocal performance for repertoire from popular music and musical theatre. This ensemble is perfect for those who enjoy contemporary and musical theatre styles, providing an outlet for creativity, selfexpression, and teamwork.
SPORT AND OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES
Astro Games (Form 5)
Open to children of all abilities who are keen to participate in sport, this will be an active club for pupils who are looking to burn some energy!
Boys’ Football
(Forms 6 - 8)
All abilities welcome! Boys will have the opportunity to develop their technical and tactical skills in a fun and engaging environment.
Boys’ Hockey
(Forms 6 - 8)
This club is aimed predominantly at those children who wish to apply the skills learnt in lessons to structured match play.
Boys’ Rugby (Forms 6 - 8)
This club will look to develop the structural and handling skills of the rugby teams, looking at attacking play and how to create space. It is open to all abilities and will be split into Prep and Senior School sessions.
Boys’ Team Games (Form 5)
Open to boys of all abilities who are keen to participate in sport. This club will look at the full range of sports that pupils usually play for matches but also some different sports such as handball and Tchoukball.
Girls’ Football (Forms 5 - 8)
During Girls’ Football Club, the girls learn to develop and hone their skills. Match play is greatly encouraged during which there are great opportunities to socialise with other girls in different year groups and develop friendships. There are plenty of opportunities for girls to improve tactically as well as technically.
Golf
Club* (Forms 5 - 8)
Steve Clay is the Professional at Blackmoor Golf Club where he has been “The Pro” for 32 years. He not only coaches golf to all ages and abilities, but also runs a well-stocked Pro Shop and is heavily involved with the organisation of everything “Golf” at the club.
He has been teaching and introducing the game of golf to pupils one day a week at St. Edmund’s for the past 24 years. During this time, he has set 100’s of children on the right path and the correct fundamentals that will enable them to enjoy this great game all their lives.
Girls Netball
(Forms 6 - 8)
This club will develop the skills learnt during games lessons such as shooting, intercepting, and applying to match play.
Judo*
(Forms 5 - 8)
Judo is a popular club here at St. Edmunds. It is a fun sport, an art, a discipline, a recreational or social activity, a fitness programme, a means of self-defence or combat, and a way of life. Our resident Judo Teacher ’Martin Rance’, who represents ProCoach Judo, has been delivering judo tuition to St. Edmund’s pupils for the past twenty years as part of our co-curricular programme.
Gymnastics
(Forms 5 - 8)
For budding gymnastics, pupils can refine their gymnastic skills and techniques. There will be a focus on developing a higher level of floor skills.
Shred Club* (Forms 5 - 8)
B1KE offers industry leading MTB coaching at St. Edmund’s; using their very own mini-bikepark facility - complete with berms, rollers and progressive jumps. During Shred sessions pupils work on the ‘Core Skills’ required to successfully navigate the modern MTB world, no matter the ability level or age. Run Club (Forms 5 - 8)
Children at St. Ed’s learn, develop and achieve great things from running - to qualifying for County or even Regional cross-country. ALL abilities are welcome.
In Run Club you will expect to learn about how to demonstrate an effective, running specific warm up, develop technique through drills, pacing yourself, interval training, speed and endurance training all while having fun!
Sports Culture (Forms 6 - 8)
Sports Culture focuses on the different sports that are favoured around the world and allows pupils to learn about the different rules and tactics. These include a range of sports such as American Football, Kabaddi and Australian Rules among others.
Sports Scholar Training
(Forms 7 & 8)
INVITATION
These sessions are an opportunity for our Sports Scholars to access specialist coaching as well as one-toone tuition. The training will improve core skills, speed, agility and cardiovascular fitness.
Swim Squad – Beginners,
Swimming Lessons*
(Forms 5 - 8)
Taught by Mrs Batten, children will learn and develop key swimming skills, as well as build water confidence.
Intermediate and Advanced (Forms 5 - 8)
During beginner’s swim squad, pupils will enhance their basic swimming skills and will be coached in the various skills required to compete and improve their swimming style and technique.
In the Intermediate squad, pupils will develop their strokes and learn the complexities of breathing, turning and diving.
Advanced swim squad will teach swimmers how to read sets and learn independently.
All swimmers are assessed when they join a squad to ensure they are in the correct squad according to their swimming ability.
Tennis Club* (Forms 5
- 8)
Go Tennis provides tennis coaching for St. Edmund’s pupils in Forms 3 to 11. Sessions take place at Grayshott Tennis Club during the allocated games session on Fridays during term time and are taken by LTA qualified coaches. Forms 5 to 8 have a maximum of 12 children per group and lessons are structured to ensure that tennis is taught using the correct balls, rackets and on court sizes that are suitable for the age of the player. Lessons will cover technique and tactical aspects of tennis through drills, games and match practice. Wide Games (Form 5)
Wide Games is an exciting and dynamic afternoon sports club. Designed for boys and girls who love to stay active, this club offers the perfect opportunity to explore a wide range of sports and physical activities in a fun, flexible, and supportive environment.
Each session allows children to participate in a variety of sports, from team games like netball and football to individual activities such as tennis, athletics, and even unique wide games like capture the flag and relay challenges. The aim is to give each child the freedom to try different sports, develop new skills, and enjoy the thrill of both competitive and recreational play.
The Wide Games club is perfect for children who enjoy variety and flexibility – no two sessions are ever the same! Whether they are looking to improve their skills in a favourite sport or try something completely new, every child will have the chance to explore different games, work as part of a team, and have a great time.
Ultimate Frisbee (Form 5)
Ultimate Frisbee is a fun noncontact, self-refereed team sport played with a flying disc frisbee.
Woodland Games (Forms 6
- 8)
This will be a high energy club which will include different woodland tagging games such as 40/40, Sardines, Capture the Flag, Predator and more!
