Finishing my first year as president of Saint Francis High School in the middle of a pandemic was unlike any other end-of-year I have experienced as an educator. However, it has been a deeply humbling and moving experience to witness the strength and resilience of our students and the entire Saint Francis community, the commitment and passion of our educators and the grace and empathy of our families. I have been inspired by the many ways in which our students and educators have adapted and innovated. I have watched in wonder and admiration as our Lancer family has built our school spirit and engagement and has continued to support those in need in our larger community. And in every moment, I have been gratefully reminded of the many supporters of our school community whose generosity lifts our spirits and fills us with confidence for our future.

ur Annual Report traditionally reflects upon the past academic year and shares the contributions of our wonderful donors and accomplishments of our students and educators. As I write this year’s introduction, I’m reminded that this past year has brought many unique challenges to all of us, along with many blessings. What began for Saint Francis as remote-only learning last March due to the pandemic has broadened this fall to a phased reopening including classes, co-curricular activities, athletic workouts and even a Senior Retreat on our beloved campus. And yet, with all of the changes we continue to make to keep our students safe and healthy, our educational mission and focus remains the same: to build a school community formed in faith, committed to academic excellence and focused on the love and care of each Saint Francis student.

In these pages, we showcase this palpable spirit of generosity that makes Catholic education possible at Saint Francis High School, profiling supporters ranging from a longtime alumni donor to parents whose children or grandchildren have graduated. More than ever, we are aware that each gift and every individual is having a lasting impact on our mission of forming Holy Cross women and men for years to come. We look forward to a not-so-distant future when we can return to in-person events like the President’s Celebration where we recognize individuals for their philanthropic leadership of our school, and we eagerly anticipate welcoming you back to campus. The SF Edge Educators Award is given to two employees who have been employed at Saint Francis for seven years or less and have exceeded expectations and made valuable contributions to the school community.

The Sr. Mercedes O’Connor, C.S.C. Mission Award recognizes an employee who is wholly committed to the mission and vision of the school. This award honors a former administrator, academic advisor and guidance counselor at Holy Cross and Saint Francis high schools who was an advocate for girls education and a mentor to women educators.

Board of Directors

e are deeply indebted to the dedicated leaders on the Saint Francis High School Board of Directors. The individual and collective counsel, expertise and devotion to the school’s Holy Cross traditions and innovative vision enable the school to fully embrace the promise of a Saint Francis education. In 2020-21, we welcomed two new members to the Board of Directors.

Mark Fernandez ’89 Mr. Fernandez is a partner at Ernst & Young, a global accounting and professional services firm where he provides business advisory services for high-tech companies ranging from early stage venture-backed companies to multinational corporations. He has a B.S. in business administration from California Polytechnic State University and is a long-standing member of the Accounting Advisory Board for the Cal Poly Orfalea College of Business. Mr. Fernandez and his wife, Cara, reside in Saratoga with their two daughters, Gianna ’21 and Giulia ’23.

Fr. Brendan McGuire Fr. McGuire is pastor of St. Simon Parish in Los Altos and joined the Board of Directors in December 2019. He was ordained a priest in 2000 and holds a B.A. and M.A. in theology from St. Patrick’s Seminary and University. A native of Ireland and the youngest of 12 children, he also holds an undergraduate degree in electronic engineering and a master’s degree in computer science and math from Trinity College, Dublin. In addition, he attended the Executive Program at the Stanford University Graduate School of Business. He was pastor and vicar general of special projects at Holy Spirit Parish and School and was involved in many diocesanwide education projects including co-founding the Drexel Schools System, a collaborative network of Catholic elementary schools. The author of four books on Sunday homilies, Fr. McGuire also co-founded St. Joseph Financial Services, a finance and accounting resource for nonprofit governance.

Additionally, our educators and administration want to spend their entire career at Saint Francis. “The most rewarding aspect of my time on the Saint Francis Board was being able to contribute to the service mission of the school through the Institutional Advancement Committee and getting to know my fellow Board members. The shared vision of faith, social justice and academic innovation is refreshing and a model of secondary education. I was inspired by the collective passion of the administration, faculty and Board that holds the Saint Francis family in such intentional regard. There are no issues that cannot be solved, no challenges that cannot be surpassed with collaborative mindshare. “[During the pandemic] I felt privileged to be a part of the leadership that had to weigh considerations around virtual learning and [its] operations and budget. It was a time of serious deliberation and learning and careful communication in a transparent way [that showed] our commitment to students’ learning and outcomes.”

“Serving on the Board taught me that the Lancer community is extremely supportive and very committed to Holy Cross and Catholic education, with a focus on educating the whole student, academically and spiritually, regardless of ethnicity or background. As chair of the Saint Francis President Search Committee, I worked very closely with many of the faculty, staff and administrators and the Brothers of Holy Cross. We were fortunate to find Jason, who is a great fit for Saint Francis. “Not really knowing what will come your way each day [during the pandemic] makes it very difficult to plan. Being creative, open-minded and very flexible are key. Saint Francis is doing a great job working through the challenges while always keeping the health of the students and community at the forefront of all its decisions.”

aint Francis High School maintains a high level of fiscal responsibility of its funds, which are monitored by the school administration, managed by the Business Office and governed through policies approved by the Board of Directors. The annual budgeting process is led by the Finance Committee of the Board of Directors with the support of the president and the Business Office. This process results in an annual budget that is approved by the Board of Directors as well as the Corporate Board of Directors of the Brothers of Holy Cross, which oversees and sponsors Saint Francis. The school is audited annually by an independent accounting firm.

Impact of Tuition Assistance In spring 2020, the financial situations for many incoming and current families changed as the pandemic brought economic instability and work changes. Saint Francis met these new financial needs swiftly and compassionately. Here are several of the heartfelt messages of gratitude we received. Letter from the Principal

eflecting back on the 2019-20 school year, I know I am not alone in feeling like we experienced two school years in the span of nine months. As I write this message eight months into the COVID-19 pandemic, recalling the many events, celebrations and accomplishments of our students here on campus brings a great deal of nostalgia as we navigate a very different school year. However, it is in recounting these many moments of grace and joy that I am reminded of how fortunate I am to be part of the Saint Francis community; a community that has continued to develop young people with hope to bring even in these unprecedented times.

Indeed, it is the passion, innovation, spirit and leadership of our students that has brought great hope to our community — whether together in person or simply in spirit. Last year, our Girls Who Code club held the Adahacks hackathon, where they mentored and engaged young women from all around the Bay Area, an event they successfully replicated 100 percent virtually this past August. Likewise, our student leaders held our first-ever official TEDxSaintFrancis event last February and are hard at work now planning for our next one, reimagining a range of scenarios but ultimately placing the student experience at the forefront of their efforts. The accomplishments of our many Lancer student-athletes reflect the hard work and dedication of so many of our students. We will not take for granted again the opportunity to compete together and to cheer on our Lancers in the gym, on the pitch or field or in the pool, and we are so proud of their hard work and dedication, in particular in these past several months. The story of the 2019-20 school year is one of resilience, with our community demonstrating time and again its commitment to ensuring our students have every resource available to ensure their success. I am grateful beyond words to all of those who continue to support our mission to educate young people to completeness. Thank you for all you do for our Saint Francis community. Go Lancers! Letter from the Executive Director of Institutional Advancement

ratitude. After such a strange, unpredictable, turbulent and often troubling year, gratitude is the word that comes to mind as I review the list of donors who continued to support Saint Francis High School through the 2019-20 year. Of course, the 2019-20 year started normally enough, with Friday night football games in the fall and a festive Christmas at Our House celebration in December 2019. But everything changed in early 2020 as word came of the coronavirus spreading rapidly through communities nationwide and worldwide. In March, Saint Francis pivoted to remote learning, and we have all been working to adapt to an ever-changing landscape ever since. In the midst of all this, and natural disasters and social and political unrest as well, the Saint Francis community not only held fast, but stepped up to support those in need. Our #GivingTuesdayNow campaign last May generated $328,000 in new gifts and pledges to support students, educators and families in this trying time, effectively tripling the support we had traditionally seen for giving day efforts in prior years. What a remarkable testament to the generosity and caring of our community for one another.

As we enter 2021 and continue to wrestle with the pandemic, there is light on the horizon. We all hope to be back on campus full-time in the coming weeks and see a return to normalcy sometime this year. In the meantime, as we look back at the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2020, I cannot help but be heartened by all of you who have made gifts to support our mission of providing a high-quality, Holy Cross-centered education to our students. On Dec. 3, 2019, Saint Francis participated in #GivingTuesday, taking to social media to encourage the school’s alumni, parents and friends to make a gift on that day. Saint Francis followed up with #GivingTuesdayNow on May 5, 2020, when the school pivoted to remote instruction and many families experienced financial hardships during the shutdown. The amount raised that day — $328,000 — stands as a record for a Saint Francis giving day and was a remarkable endeavor.

MICHELE BARNETT GASKILL, Parent of Briana ’21 and Kayla ’23 One of Michele Barnett Gaskill’s guiding principles as a Catholic is to give sacrificially. She regularly organizes volunteer events that serve homeless and low-income families and has served as a Girl Scout leader for more than a decade. Ever since her daughters Briana ’21 and Kayla ’23 joined Saint Francis, Michele has been an enthusiastic supporter of the school and has enjoyed giving back in a multitude of ways. She is often behind the scenes and attending many school events, and she faithfully contributes financially so that Saint Francis can continue in its commitment to provide a Holy Cross education to its students. “I am delighted that a majority of the fundraising events that I donate to at Saint Francis support tuition assistance,” Michele says. “I have always believed that Saint Francis High School offers the best education in the Bay Area, and I am glad to be a part of sharing that opportunity with others.” Kayla ’23, Michele and Briana ’21 Gaskill

As a result of her philanthropy, Michele says she has grown as an individual. She has stretched herself to give and volunteer at higher levels. As a parent, she is aware of her responsibility to her children and other Saint Francis students as a community volunteer. “It is important for us to mentor our next generation of community leaders and volunteers, our students. The best way to do that is to lead by example,” says Michele. “The children are more aware of the service they are doing in the world, and as young adults they are forming who they are, who they want to be, and who they will be as adults. They are watching and listening and are looking to us as examples to follow.” Just as her daughters are striving to be Holy Cross women, Michele also has incorporated the BRIC [Bring hope, Respect others, Inspire integrity, Celebrate family] values into all aspects of her life and grown spiritually through her Saint Francis service and support. Meaningful relationships and experiences have contributed to making Saint Francis a great community for the Gaskill family. “As a parent, what I love most about Saint Francis is that my daughters love the experiences they have had. Their joy is my joy. We have always felt that the people of Saint Francis are like family, and Saint Francis has always felt like home,” she says. For Michele, giving back is an intrinsic conviction and in sharing her time, talent and treasure, she is someone who makes life a little brighter for those in her community. “God has blessed me, and I have lived a blessed life,” she says. “I wish to share those blessings with others.”

DANNA AND BRAD LEAHY, Parents of Michael ’19 and Elizabeth ’22 From Holy Cross values to academics, co-curricular and leadership opportunities, Danna and Brad Leahy love how their children Michael ’19 and Elizabeth ’22 have blossomed as individuals, in part because of the education they received at Saint Francis. They saw how Michael broadened his perspective when he participated in the Houston immersion to provide hurricane relief, and they credit the Saint Francis athletics program for molding their son’s character with valuable life lessons. Similarly, Elizabeth is honing her leadership skills as a mentor to freshmen with the Family Club and is working with the Board of Directors as an ambassador to give the Board a student’s perspective on Saint Francis. “Saint Francis gives them a sense of belonging,” says Brad. “Not only do they get a good education, but it has taught them to be good people.” Danna, Michael ’19, Brad and Elizabeth ’22 Leahy

Just as the Leahy children have found a home at Saint Francis, Danna and Brad similarly have built connections within the parent community. Their philosophy is that parents should step into their own Saint Francis community in parallel fashion to their children. Whether Danna and Brad are working alongside volunteers to create school social events or attending athletic events and cheering on the Lancers with other families, they say their lives as parents have been deepened by their connections with school parents they otherwise would not have known. As an appreciation for the family they’ve found at Saint Francis, giving back to the school is a natural extension of what it means to be part of the community. “I grew up in Catholic school communities, and I have reaped a lot of benefits through my education,” says Danna, who also served as the Saint Francis Women’s Club president for two years. “These communities are enriched by

the volunteer participation, the parents’ involvement and the donors. I would like to continue that life cycle.” The Leahy family has benefited from many meaningful opportunities at Saint Francis, and Danna and Brad are doing their part to ensure these experiences continue for future families. Their generosity includes financial support to Saint Francis. They encourage other parents to consider how they can stretch themselves because in doing so, the entire community benefits. “If everybody does what’s reasonably equitable for their particular means, that compounds across the board. It may not be an equal amount for everybody; it’s just an equal contribution on what’s possible,” says Danna. “It might be that your contribution is not monetary at all and is strictly time. But we’re only as rich as that contribution.”

LANCER PROFILE IN GIVING

LINDA PONCETTA, Saint Francis Past Parent and Grandparent There are two things that Linda Poncetta values about her family’s Lancer experience: the foundation in faith they received; and the personal connections the Poncettas have made within the Lancer community. “I will forever be indebted,” she says. While Linda Poncetta’s children and grandchildren have long graduated from Saint Francis, the school is never far from her thoughts. She continues to support the school financially because she is grateful for how the Lancers in her family were shaped by their Saint Francis education. “They all graduated with a good sense of values. I believe in the people who are there. The teachers that my kids and grandkids learned from were stellar people,” says Linda. Linda, Molly ’94 and the late Stan Poncetta

Linda and her late husband Stan were introduced to Saint Francis when their son Greg was preparing to enter high school at a time when the local public schools were facing cuts, and they knew Saint Francis would be spared. Greg graduated in 1986, followed by his sister Molly in 1994. The grandchildren that followed are Taylor Poncetta ’14, who was an alumni intern during the 2018-19 school year, Aidan Olander ’15 and Andrew Olander ’17. Linda remembers being warmly welcomed on campus whenever she came to volunteer with Campus Ministry or to support Lancer athletics, in particular soccer and volleyball games. Whether she was reconnecting with familiar faces like longtime teacher and coach (now retired) Barry Ivers ’64 and former principal Patty Tennant, or she sees now how her children and grandchildren still have tight friendships with their Lancer teammates, her recollections of Saint Francis often involve specific individuals.

“I think Saint Francis instills [the importance of lifelong connections] in the kids and families,” she said. In order to give other students the opportunity to experience a Lancer education and to enjoy all the positives that her family has enjoyed, Linda directs her gifts to support the tuition assistance program at Saint Francis. She lives by the words “where much is given, much is required,” and they guide her philanthropic efforts. “I’ve been very fortunate to be able to be generous. There’s no shortage of places that need or can use help, but you have to pick and choose,” she says. “I would rather give a larger amount than having it dribble in. As long as I live, I can see myself supporting Saint Francis.”

DAN RODRIGUEZ ’66 AND CAROL ABELL RODRIGUEZ ’68 HC As a Lancer, Dan Rodriguez ’66 was known for his school spirit. He was one of the cheerleaders during his senior year, including the head cheerleader during basketball season. Now, even after having relocated to the Northwest for the past three decades, Dan takes pride in being a Lancer and credits his experiences and his classmates for who he has become. His Saint Francis influences include former chaplain Fr. Art Schoenfeld, C.S.C., and Angelo Aguiar, the longtime coach, teacher and administrator with whom Dan fostered a lifelong connection professionally and personally. Dan organizes lunch for his classmates during his quarterly visits to the Bay Area. If the Lancers happen to be playing football or basketball that day, even better. Dan will stop by Mountain View to catch the game. Though he has retired from his position as the executive director of the University of Oregon Alumni Association, Dan keeps an eye out for students from Saint Francis who land in Eugene. LANCER PROFILE IN GIVING

SIMON RAINES, Saint Francis Director of Admissions Longtime Saint Francis educator Simon Raines is a proud papa come every graduation. As the director of admissions for the past eight years, he is in a good position to witness students’ transformations. In the beginning, he sees tentative freshmen who are unsure about their next four years, and at the end of their journey at Saint Francis, he is celebrating them just as much as their families are. “Freshmen have no idea where the road will take them, and in four years, I see them growing and blossoming. That’s my biggest highlight,” he says. “Lancers are incredible students who are people of service and faith and take their studies and their extracurricular interests seriously.” During his 23 years at Saint Francis, Simon has served in many roles in addition to director of admissions: English teacher, director of activities, boys basketball coach and the first coordinator of the Holy Cross Achievers program, a program that focuses on selected first-generation, low-income students from under-represented ethnic groups. Simon loves working with students, families and colleagues at Saint Francis, which is evident in his support to the school. For 17 consecutive years, he has contributed to the school’s tuition assistance program, and it was an easy decision for him and his wife, Daniela, to do so from the start. They are the parents of Jarod ’21, Colin ’23 and Everett, a sixth-grader. “It wasn’t much in the beginning, but it was something we wanted to do. I felt

the school had given so much to me in terms of fulfillment and nourishment,” he says. The Brothers of Holy Cross had a lot to do with Simon’s growth as a person of faith. He sees their handprints on much of his career at Saint Francis, from meeting for the first time Br. Eamon Schaffer, a beloved figure who worked on campus for many decades, to visiting the retired brothers every summer when he took student leaders to Simon and Daniela Raines the Holy Cross Institute in Austin, Texas, for leadership conferences. Simon is thankful to be at Saint Francis and the faith it fosters in its community members. “I have learned so much from the brothers,” he said. “My faith grows stronger because of my job. I’m not sure how many people have the blessing of growing closer to God because of their work.”

Fundraising Events Benefiting Tuition Assistance Each year, Saint Francis hosts several events and activities for our community to gather and advance important school initiatives. For the 2019-20 year, we hosted pre-pandemic, in-person events until March 2020. All in-person events from March until present were canceled or virtual. For the pre-COVID-19 events, we are deeply grateful to those who supported our events by underwriting and participating in them.

Christmas At Our House Raised $85,000 For nearly three decades, this tradition ushers in the holiday spirit for school families and the local community. Guests enjoyed a festive party, an elegant high tea, a stylish gift boutique and dynamic performances by our students.

Scholarship Golf Classic Raised $45,000

Raised $9,000 Enjoying a great day of camaraderie and friendly competition, all golfers and other participants were winners at the Los Altos Golf and Country Club for supporting current and future Saint Francis students.

This night of friendly competition on the Wednesday before the Saint Francis vs. Bellarmine football game raised money to support financial aid for students at both schools.

Capt. Matthew Patrick Manoukian ’01 Memorial Crab Feast Raised $60,000 Saint Francis families and friends enjoyed homemade pastas and fresh crab to support the scholarship that the Manoukian family established in memory of Capt. Matthew Patrick Manoukian ’01 who was killed in the line of duty.
