It has been a joy to see our Holy Cross charism lived out on campus, in every class, activity and event. It has been a true blessing to see our school come together at Mass and rallies, gather in the Quad between classes and sing the Alma Mater after games. Our students share a genuine commitment to hospitality and care, embracing every member of our community and seeking what is good for one another. I have witnessed our students demonstrating faith-filled responses to God’s call for them: hearing their personal reflections at Wednesday flagpole prayer, seeing them lead retreats and service projects and being inspired by the myriad activities that showcase their creative gifts. Our talented and dedicated educators, many of whom are alumni themselves, instill a remarkable pride and love of learning that is truly unique to Saint Francis.

here have been so many ways in which my family and I have been welcomed to Saint Francis High School, and we are so grateful for the many kindnesses extended on our behalf in support of our transition back to the Bay Area. Every opportunity to attend welcome receptions, student events and community gatherings has given me a sense of why this school community is special. There is a spirit in this place that is both welcoming and inspiring, and it is a daily reminder that I am blessed to have the opportunity to serve at Saint Francis.

Our school community has a compelling vision for the future of Saint Francis and for Catholic schools across the country. Holy Cross education has always affirmed the need to innovate and explore on behalf of our students’ growth, and we are uniquely situated in this time and place to lead on behalf of a new generation of students. Our academic and co-curricular programs are growing so that our students will benefit before they even step on campus as freshmen. We are creating new opportunities for student leadership beyond campus and are continuing to expand the ways we bring the world to our school every day. I’m excited about the work that awaits us: to carry on the tradition of outstanding Holy Cross education that pervades every fiber of our daily life on campus and to help animate an exciting vision of how Saint Francis will shape the future of Catholic education. It is work that will require the commitment of every member of our community, and we look forward to your partnership as we advance our school’s mission and vision. Thanks to all of you who have introduced yourselves in my first few months and have shared with me your love of our school. If we’ve not met yet, I hope you’ll stop by to say hello when you’re on campus. It’s an exciting time to be at Saint Francis! Why do you donate to Saint Francis? Saint Francis was our partner in educating the hearts and minds of our three children over a span of 13 years. And we have three grandchildren, and our nephew and six cousins are Lancers! We contribute to make Saint Francis the best it can be and help where and when we can. By helping a little here or there, every family can help support the school.

What was a meaningful part of school life for you? Sports were a huge part of our life at Saint Francis. Field hockey winning its first WCAL and CCS championships are at the top of the list, and Tim never missed a baseball game!

Why is being involved at Saint Francis so important to you? It’s a passion of mine because my family’s been so entrenched in the school since the 1960s. My dad built a lot of the original buildings of the school, and I’ve taken down some buildings that he built. It’s been a neat thing within my family to continue supporting the school and making sure the facilities serve the school’s needs.

What was a special drama production to work on? My favorite show to do was Cabaret during my daughter’s senior year in 2008. We turned Raskob Gym [before the theater was built] into a cabaret theater. It was amazing! Several audience members sat at cabaret tables and became part of the show.

You serve at Saint Francis and volunteer with many boards and nonprofits in the area. How are you successful at what you do? I like to make sure things can happen, even when things get difficult. With a background as a civil engineer, I have the ability to look at something, identify a problem, come up with a solution and implement it until I get success. Whether you’re coaching or you’re on a board, there’s a structured approach to solving different issues. It’s not always one size fits all.

What do you hope to inspire in others? Give treasure and talent. Sometimes it goes beyond writing checks. Giving back is what we should be doing. If everybody was involved in their community, we’d have a much better world.

Moreau Leadership Award

The Moreau Leadership Award is presented to an employee who is retiring from Saint Francis after 25 or more years of service, who has enriched the culture of the school and whose work has made the school a better place.

Roberta Chisam

Science teacher, Environmental Club moderator, head girls cross-country coach, assistant girls track coach Years of Service: 33 In the classroom or out, Mrs. Chisam is a true Holy Cross educator who helps students reach their full potential. Extremely passionate about the life sciences, the environment and sustainability, she teaches students how to cultivate a sound relationship with our planet. She exposes students to the world around them, whether she is taking them to the far-flung locales of Fiji, Costa Rica or Iceland or simply bringing them to the Quad. A legend in the track and crosscountry communities, Mrs. Chisam was recognized this past spring by the CCS Athletic Directors Association with the Distinguished Service Award.

Len Christensen

English and social studies teacher, head freshman football coach Years of Service: 40 Renowned for his passion for language and the arts, Mr. Christensen cultivated the same in his students in his English and social studies classes. The longtime moderator of the Shakespeare Club, he brought students to Ashland and the Berkeley Rep. As head coach for the freshman football team, he set the tone for the players’ effort, teamwork and sportsmanship. Mr. Christensen served as English Department chair, moderator of the senior class, Key Club and NHS and as representative and chair of the Faculty Staff Communications Committee because of his passion for making working conditions even better for colleagues.

Sally Holden

Freshman counselor, Teen Awareness Program moderator Years of Service: 24 Ms. Holden has the gift of connecting with students. She is caring and genuine, and students sense her authenticity right away, trusting her with their personal issues. For the past six years, she has been a freshman counselor to 220 students. With many upper-class students sharing with her how they have adjusted to Saint Francis, Ms. Holden bears witness to the biggest amount of change in students during the four years. She has served as a college counselor, social studies and English teacher and as moderator for Chess Club, Interact Club, Teen Awareness Program and Women’s Club.

Mike Mitchell

Math teacher, assistant freshman football coach Years of Service: 44 The quintessential Holy Cross teacher and coach, Mr. Mitchell instilled confidence in students nervous about math. He had a storied 14-year career as the head varsity football coach before his unprecedented move to coaching the freshman team. His first CCS football championship after starting the season 0-6 and then winning seven in a row is legendary, as is the intensity and integrity he brought to and inspired in all his players. Additionally, he served as baseball coach for 20 years, PE teacher, weight room coordinator and intramurals director.

Myron Nessan

Octavio “Aki” Rodriguez

Throughout his Saint Francis career, Mr. Nessan worked with the administrators to support an environment that enables teachers to do what they do best — inspire students. He is committed to keeping tuition affordable for families and has witnessed firsthand the impact of tuition assistance on students and their families. One of his favorite memories is the 2018 President’s Dinner when a former tuition assistance recipient addressed the audience in her Air Force “whites” and spoke about how grateful she was to the Sobrato family for funding her Saint Francis education with their endowed fund.

Truly everyone has benefited from Mr. Rodriguez’s gentle, giving presence on campus. Head custodian since 2010, he embodies the custodial staff’s pride in keeping the campus spotless, taking care of each building as if it were his own home. Mr. Rodriguez enjoys the company of the students, and they, in return, have a deep respect for him. Teachers and staff enjoy bantering with him, and the Brothers have always shared an enduring friendship with him, particularly those who took Mr. Rodriguez under their wings when he started at Saint Francis and didn’t speak English.

Margaret Miller

Dean of students, Spanish teacher Years of Service: 37 As a Holy Cross educator and dean of students, Ms. Miller uses her gift of understanding teenagers to embrace each day as a new opportunity to make a difference in the life of a young person. Her curiosity, zeal for life and passion for supporting teens extends to helping parents in navigating relationships with their children, serving as an excellent resource for new teachers and even driving her 1969 Cadillac to start the senior parade. Ms. Miller has served as director of guidance and counseling, attendance coordinator and moderator of AFS/International Club, the sophomore class and Lace Up Stand Up.

The SF Edge Educators Award is given to two employees who have been employed at Saint Francis for seven years or less and have exceeded expectations and made valuable contributions to the school community.

The Sr. Mercedes O’Connor, C.S.C. Mission Award recognizes an employee who is wholly committed to the mission and vision of the school. This award honors a former administrator, academic advisor and guidance counselor at Holy Cross and Saint Francis high schools who was an advocate for girls education and a mentor to women educators.

e are delighted to welcome three new members – one alumna, one former Saint Francis administrator and a current parent – to the Saint Francis High School Board of Directors.

Molly McDonald ’83

Jim began his education career at Saint Francis as a teacher and an administrator before serving as the school’s first lay principal in 1989 and the first lay president in 1992 and, in 2018, as executive administrator in support of acting president Fr. Tony Mancuso. CEO of ESGI, a K-12 assessment company, Jim has held executivelevel positions in both startups and established educational content publishing companies, including Pearson and Harcourt, and has served as CEO of Adaptive Curriculum, Epsilon and Harcourt Connected Learning. Jim is a board member of Sadlier Publishers in New York.

Angela is the chief executive of Montalvo Arts Center, a multidisciplinary arts center and artist residency located in Saratoga. Her leadership and vision have significantly enhanced the center’s collaborations, budget, audience and community outreach. She is the former executive director of the Community School of Music and Arts (CSMA) in Mountain View. She has received numerous awards, among them the 2005 Fundraiser of the Year for Silicon Valley by the Association of Fundraising Professionals and inclusion in Silicon Valley’s 100 Women of Influence for 2012 by the Silicon Valley/San Jose Business Journal. Angela is the parent of Lily ’23, Jake and Emily ’16.

Molly is the chief of staff to Santa Clara University President Kevin F. O’Brien, S.J. Her responsibilities include advising the president, managing staff, budget, administration, policies and procedures. At Santa Clara, Molly served as assistant vice president for human resources. She also was general counsel, chancellor and director of human resources for the Diocese of Monterey. Her philanthropic leadership includes serving as vice president of the Board of Directors for Sacred Heart Community Service in San Jose and past chair of the St. Christopher School Advisory Board. Molly received a J.D. from Santa Clara University School of Law and a B.A. from Loyola Marymount University. She and her husband reside in Willow Glen with their teenage son.

Letter from the Principal

hen I look back at my first year as principal, I am filled with immense gratitude for the opportunity to serve this great school as well as excitement at the chance to build upon the strong foundations and traditions that I experienced here during my high school years. In 2018-19, our students truly embodied our school’s vision of developing leaders of impact rooted in faith and service, demonstrating the determination and capacity to truly shape the future of our world.

Our Lancer students took transformational leadership to the next level in 2018-19, initiating our Common Ground student forums to dialogue about important issues facing our world and challenging our community members to be the problem-solvers of the future. Many of our students elevated and expanded on these topics in our second annual SF Talks TED-style event, which officially transitions to become TEDxSaintFrancis this year. Student voice and leadership were evident across our campus, as students came together to celebrate our unique and diverse Holy Cross family throughout the school year. Nurturing a burgeoning spirit of innovation, we launched our inaugural Lancer Tank events featuring pitches from our Entrepreneurship and Design Thinking for Justice students to a panel of CEOs and industry leaders in Silicon Valley. As students learned how to develop a business plan and marketing strategies, they also were tasked with generating products with a social impact — leveraging the tenets of Catholic social teaching to design for good. Additionally, student leaders from our Ignite Youth Group elevated student engagement in our Campus Ministry program, hosting the Jesus Reframed retreat and Evening of Hope and Healing in addition to planning all school liturgies. Students from Girls Who Code and the Programming Club organized daylong hackathons and invited young people to devise creative solutions for pressing social problems. Across all disciplines, our programs continue to offer opportunities for students to engage further with their subjects and receive critical life lessons whether they’re learning in the classroom, on the field or onstage. Saint Francis is proud to be at the forefront of developing the thought leaders of the future whose passion and commitment to justice brings us great hope in an increasingly complex world. As a San Jose native and husband of a Saint Francis alumna, I knew of and deeply respected this institution when I joined the team in July of this year, but my appreciation for the traditions and values of Saint Francis has grown every day since.

It is due to the support of so many parents, grandparents, alumni, teachers and community members that Saint Francis can continue to offer a unique experience for students, one rooted in faith and tradition but also committed to innovation and possibility. From our hundreds of athletic and arts events, to our traditions like Christmas At Our House, to speaking in classes and mentoring students, there is a place for everyone to meaningfully impact the lives of our students through financial contributions, volunteerism and participation.

At the heart of Leading with Hope and Zeal, the Saint Francis strategic plan, is nurturing a socioeconomically diverse and inclusive student body. Throughout the school’s history, talented students have received tuition assistance, providing them with the opportunity to fully engage — intellectually, spiritually, emotionally — in the Holy Cross experience. As the cost of living in Silicon Valley continues to skyrocket, so, too, do tuition assistance requests. The Board of Directors has made a commitment to increase the amount of tuition assistance for low- and middle-income families. Tuition assistance is supported through endowment earnings, including from endowed tribute funds, which are established in honor or memory of a loved one, or planned gifts, which is the process of including gifts through financial or estate planning. One-time gifts to support the tuition assistance program are another important way to ensure that a Saint Francis education remains accessible to all qualified students.

What has your SFHS education and experience given you? I’ve learned to value the power of what an education can bring you in life. Because of the great academics, teachers, mentors and resources I had at Saint Francis, I received a full scholarship to play football at the University of Colorado, Boulder. The lifelong friends I made at SFHS supported me throughout my journey of becoming who I am today. Saint Francis football was the greatest experience of them all. Coaches Calcagno, Christensen, Hisatake and the entire coaching staff helped shape me into becoming a better man on and especially off of the field. They always told me that I was representing the team 24/7, and I now take that with me everywhere I go. Saint Francis allowed me to view the work through the importance of community, academics and faith. Coming to school every day, praying and seeing the beautiful campus, I felt the spirit of God there and with all of the faculty. Every student was respectful and kindhearted. And the staff really understood the challenges of student-athletes and were supportive of our dreams of playing at the next level.

God put me in a position with great people who were able to give me the opportunity to receive a higher education. If it wasn’t for the love, support and generosity from Saint Francis, I would not be at the University of Colorado, Boulder. Saint Francis literally changed my life. I was raised by a single mom, don’t have a father figure and a lot of my family don’t make it to college. I am giving hope and inspiration to my younger cousins, who now want to go to Saint Francis! That for me is huge and would not have been possible without the opportunity others gave me. After college, I want to give back to kids who come from a similar background as me and help them pursue higher education. I plan on giving back to the amazing SFHS community. I might even want to come back and be a football coach there one day, because of all the life lessons my coaches taught me.

Fundraising Events Benefiting Tuition Assistance Each year, Saint Francis hosts several events and activities for our community to gather and advance important school initiatives. For the 2018-19 year, we focused our efforts on tuition assistance endowment. We thank those who supported our events by underwriting and participating in them, and we invite everyone to join us next year.

Christmas At Our House Raised $61,000 For nearly three decades, this tradition ushers in the holiday spirit for school families and the local community. Guests enjoyed a festive party, an elegant high tea, a stylish gift boutique and dynamic performances by our students.

Enjoying a great day of camaraderie and friendly competition, all golfers and other participants were winners at the Los Altos Golf and Country Club for supporting current and future Saint Francis students.

Nearly 500 guests attended “Knights in the Caribbean,” enjoying an evening of fine cuisine, signature cocktails, spirited bidding, lively dancing and late-night bites. Guests bid on silent and live auction items for exclusive concert experiences, luxury suites at sporting events and unique vacation getaways.

Matthew Patrick Manoukian ’01 Memorial Crab Feast Raised $53,000 At this sold-out event, families and friends of Saint Francis enjoyed homemade pastas and fresh crab to support the scholarship that the Manoukian family established in memory of their son and brother who was killed in the line of duty. The evening also honored the life and legacy of Jennifer Gonzales Shushereba ’03.

SFHS vs. Bellarmine Alumni and Friends Bocce Ball Tournament Raised $13,000 Celebrating the time-honored rivalry between both schools, this night of friendly competition on the eve of the Saint Francis vs. Bellarmine football game raised money to support financial aid for students at both campuses.
