UNTIL MAR 2018 Exhibition: Glitter, Glitz and Glamour The Avenue of Stars has partnered with renowned movie poster artist Yuen Tai-yung to create an exhibition featuring 24 caricatures of movie stars and singers. Mr Yuen was recently presented with the ‘Professional Achievement Award’ at the Hong Kong Film Awards for his contribution to Hong Kong cinema. See the likes of Bruce Lee, Leslie Cheung, Anita Mui, and Angelina Jolie displayed in caricature form. The art works will be on show from now until March next year. NOV 3-12 Hong Kong International Literary Festival This year’s festival features a diverse lineup of writers, encompassing fiction, thrillers, poetry and live storytelling among others. There will be events with literary stars such as Carol Ann Duffy, Amy Tan and Ian Rankin. Hong Kong writers and themes, including the 20th anniversary of Hong Kong’s return to China, will also be specially showcased to promote local talent on an international scale. NOV 3 A Culinary Evening with the National Culinary Team of Denmark Discover how the National Culinary Team of Denmark prepares for competitions such as the Culinary Olympic Games and World Championships, how new dishes are developed and more. Hong Kong Spartan Race

One of the world’s most famous obstacle course races, a Spartan Race is designed to push contestants to their limits. We have been assured that “there will be fire, mud, water, barbed wire, and occasionally Hell on Earth”. The race will be split into the 13km Spartan Super with up to 29 obstacles and the 6km Spartan Sprint with up to 23 obstacles; there will also be kids’ race categories with distances split by age group. Tickets range from $480 for the Open Junior Race to $1,180 for the Elite Spartan Super; spectator only tickets are also available at $50 with limited spots.

NOV 5 A Plastic Ocean - A Film To Make A Difference A Plastic Ocean is a feature-length adventure documentary that brings to light the consequences of our global disposable lifestyle.

The documentary chronicles journalist Craig Leeson’s discovery of plastic waste in the midst of a search for the elusive blue whale. Leeson teams up with diver Tanya Streeter and an international team of scientists and researchers as they travel to twenty locations around

NOV 6-10 Box of Hope Box of Hope is an annual charity project which provides basic amenities to underprivileged children in Asia, donated by Hong Kong school children and local organisations. SwimRun #1: Ma On Shan

First of its kind in Hong Kong, SwimRun is a Swedish originated multiple-stage race which involves racers swimming and running across over a cross-country race course. NOV 25-30 Exhibition: Jade Jungle, Crimson City Sai Kung local Sammy Jane Freeman is holding a solo photography exhibition. Despite only being 21, Freeman has trained in New York and has since travelled extensively while focusing on surfing photography in areas such as California, South Africa, Bali, and Australia. This new exhibition however is entirely based around Hong Kong, with plenty of shots of Sai Kung. Opening night will be 6-8:30pm on November 25, and refreshments will be provided. His family has organised a fundraiser for two charities, Perthes Association and Sailability, to raise awareness of the disease. DEC 2-3 Hong Kong 24-Hour Race 2017 Every 24 hours, 5,500 people across the globe fall victim to slavery. Anyone can be a part of a youth-led anti-slavery movement by joining this 24-hour run and advocating for freedom. The

he Hong Kong International Literary Festival (HKILF) is an annual event held over 10 days, featuring established and emerging writers from around the world in a programme that includes discussions, literary lunches and dinners, workshops, lectures, debates, book signings, and readings.

The Festival celebrates creative writing in English and emphasises writing with an Asian connection, featuring both established and emerging authors and includes works in translation, literary fiction and nonfiction, poetry and scriptwriting. Amy Tan: Where the Past Begins Amy Tan returns to the childhood memories that formed the emotional nucleus of her beloved novels in her memoir, Where the Past Begins - due for release in October.

Duncan Clark will lead Tan in a conversation about her life as a writer, her craft and the origins of her creative impulse. 7-8:30pm, Wang Gungwu Theatre, Graduate House, University of Hong Kong. $125.

Xu Xi: From Fiction to Nonfiction Often described as a “transnational” or “third-culture” author, Xu Xi—Indonesian-Chinese, HK-raised, USeducated—writes with first-hand knowledge of the insider-outsider’s experience in Hong Kong.

Carol Ann Duffy and John Sampson Much-loved British Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy brings her 14-year-long collaboration with court musician John Sampson to the HKILF. Duffy will read from her Collected Poems, comprising works from The World’s Wife, Rapture and The Bees, whilst Sampson plays an array of fascinating period and modern instruments. This delightful interplay of thoughtprovoking poetry and exuberant music will make for a unique evening not to be missed.

City of Protest Join Hong Kong-based lawyer and writer Antony Dapiran for an in-depth conversation on his book, City of Protest, which was released earlier this year as part of the Penguin Hong Kong series. In City of Protest, Dapiran illuminates the cultural and structural forces behind Hong Kong’s public protests, placing 2014’s Occupy Movement and 2016’s “Fishball Riots” in Mong Kok in a broader historical context. Narrated by Natasha Khan.

Clockenflap returns to Hong Kong Clockenflap, the city’s biggest annual music and arts festival, will grace the Central Harbourfront from November 17-19. This year’s 10th anniversary edition will have three British headliners: Kaiser Chiefs, Massive Attack and The Prodigy. Other acts include US indie band the Dandy Warhols, Canadian indie star Feist,

Danish singer-songwriter MØ, LA rapper KID INK, reunited Hong Kong alternative pop band Fan Hung A, world-music act Tinariwen, Korean R&B/hip hop star Dean, and American DJ and producer Matthew Dear. Massive Attack are set to close the festival with their only performance in Southeast Asia this year. This will be the

second year Clockenflap is being staged on the Central Harbourfront. The festival was moved to the site last year after being staged for five years at the West Kowloon Cultural District site.

Walk the Wall for charity Walk the Wall, a charity fundraiser run by International China Concern (ICC), will be returning to Hong Kong on December 2 for its 10th anniversary. The walk will be held across multiple countries including Australia, Canada, US, UK and more. “The walk starts at Quarry Bay, just off of Kings Road, walks up into the mountains and finishes at Tai Tam Reservoir”, says Peter Maize, CEO of ICC. “The fundraiser is open to everyone and any age. If you can’t make the whole nine kilometres it’s no problem.

Bring your dogs on the day too.” Last year’s event saw 100 people take part, “We’re hoping to get 500 people to do the walk this time round.”

A live singer will be performing on the day and stalls will be set up selling food and snacks.

ICC has been helping abandoned children in China for 25 years, “We have 350 children under our care, most of the children who were abandoned are disabled. We’re trying to prevent abandonment by working and assisting parents with disabled children to provide the care their children needs.”

All the money raised from the walk will goes towards the projects in China and pays for their operations, the food for the children and the caregivers. ICC currently has three centres, one in Henan and two in Hunan.

A film to make a difference

Long-term camping in the grey A public campsite in Sai Kung West Country Park is suspected of having been occupied by some people for nearly a year. It is suspected that the tents are the same ones that were found at the other campsite in the park, Wan Tsai South Campsite, two years ago.

It is believed that the alleged occupiers have moved to their current location after the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department closed the Wan Tsai South Campsite from November to December last year to conduct maintenance work. The Country Parks and Special Areas Regulations do not stipulate how long campers are allowed to stay in a public campsite as long as their tents are set up in the designated areas. Many of the worries relate to lax and sometimes illegal campfires, as well as the sanitary conditions in the overwhelmed toilet facilities.

Outward Bound Hong Kong are hosting a screening of ‘A Plastic Ocean’ at Hong Kong Academy Theatre on November 5.

‘A Plastic Ocean’ is a new feature-length documentary following journalist Craig Leeson, free diver Tanya Streeter, and an international team of scientists as they travel to twenty locations over four years to document the state of our oceans as they become increasingly impacted by plastic pollution. The documentary seeks to bring to light the consequences of our global disposable lifestyle on both humans and wildlife, and also puts forth working solutions that can be put into immediate effect.

‘A Plastic Ocean’ will be shown at no charge, on a first come first served basis until tickets run out or an hour before the screening starts - there’s no excuse for us to not learn about the harm we deal to our oceans and how we can rectify it.

Public to be given access to Clearwater Bay Golf and Country Club From Oct 30 to 5 November, the public will be given rare access to the Clearwater Bay Golf and Country Club for the PGA Tour Open. As well as giving golf enthusiasts an opportunity to see top players, it is also a charity event that raised $1.5 million last year for World Vision.

Last year, Australian Daniel Nisbet duked it out with American Alex Kang to win the 72-hole tournament. The Clearwater Bay Golf and Country Club was established in 1982 and is an 18-hole course divided into two parts: the Highland Nine and the Ocean Nine. In October 2015, the club hosted the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship, a tournament won by Chinese teenager Jin Cheng. As a result of the victory, Jin went on to play in the 2016 Masters Tournament at the Augusta National Golf Club.

Descendants of space silkworms donated

A dozen silkworms whose parents took a spin around the planet have been donated to a Hong Kong secondary school. Six of the silkworms were taken on the Shenzhou-11 spacecraft, China’s sixth manned space mission and its longest to date, which saw two astronauts, Jin Haipeng and Chen Dong, spend 30 days orbiting in the Tiangong-2 space laboratory.

The school’s silkworm project was accepted by China’s space programme after it won the 2015 space experiment design competition organised

by Hong Kong’s Home Affairs Bureau and the China Manned Space Agency. The out-of-thisworld experiment to study how the silkworms transformed in a weightless environment was suggested by pupils at Christian and Missionary Alliance Sun Kei Secondary School in Tseung Kwan O. The astronauts donated the descendants of these “space silkworms” to the school, who will study them to see if the favourable variation will be inherited.

The professional mountain biker talks to Eric Ho about his road to winning a bronze medal at the Asian Olympic Games I was born in an army hospital in Swindon UK, my father’s side of the family were from Newcastle Upon Tyne, whereas my mother is Hong Kong Chinese. My parents met when my father was with the British Army. He loved Hong Kong so much he decided to raise our family here but I spent a few years studying in the UK. I loved being multicultural growing up and participating in both Chinese and English festivals.

My father would join me biking and my mother just requested I wear all my safety gear. Some of my Chinese friends actually had their bikes thrown away by their parents as they thought it affected their studying.

I was raised in Sham Tseng Village, and ended up living in Tuen Mun where all my riding friends are. I moved to Sai Kung about 5 years ago as most of my family live here and after getting married my wife and I decided it was a great outdoor place to raise our children.

Aged 11, my father bought me my first mountain bike for Christmas and the rest, as they say, is history.

I was into all types of sports and represented my school in everything. I held inter school records for 400 and 800 metre sprints, won cross country races and played football for a Hong Kong Premier League team.

After school I raced rally cars in the China National series for the Shanghai Volkswagen Team before becoming a mountain biker for the Hong Kong National Team.

My father played a big role in my life, being a role model, mentor, coach and my brother. He was a marathon runner for the British

pedal to the medal in the Dual Slalom in the Asian Mountain Biking Championships and riding off the Macau Tower on a bunjee jump for charity for the Red Cross.

I have many other proud moments including multiple Hong Kong championships but achieving a double in Guangzou earlier this year in a downmall race was one of my personal best highlights.

I usually race the Hong Kong local mountain bike series plus some China races. Once or twice a year I go to Chiangmai, Thailand as there is a big mountain bike park there. But my favourite has to be training and doing the local annual races in Whistler, Canada.

I am currently a Trek Bicycle Hong Kong Team rider and all my bikes are Trek bikes. I ride my Trek emonda road bike for training and my race bikes are the Trek Session 9.9 OCLV Carbon and the Slash 9.9 Race Shop Limited 29er. These would still have been my personal pick even if I had to pay out my own pocket. For beginners I recommend a bike from the Trek Marlin range.

The best piece of advice I was given was from my father. He said this when I was young, it is also quoted by my mountain biking Idol Shaun Palmer, ‘Nothing is impossible, if you put your mind to it you can do anything’

My father and I like to do morning rides up to the Radio Tower on Chuk Yeung Road and then through some trails back down Po Lo Che Road and down to old Sai Kung for a coffee. For someone looking to get into mountain biking, my tip would be to find some biking friends and meet people in a local bike shops or groups.

Both my son, Adam, and my daughter, Emma, have been around bikes and sports since babies. I learnt to ride two wheels at 2.5 years old but Adam actually pipped me at about 2 years and 2 months, with Emma riding two wheels at the same age as I did. Having a family has been amazing, my wife has been supportive and my children love the outdoors. I will continue to race as long as I can but my children will be the next chapter in my life - they currently ride motocross, go carts, mountain bikes, wakeboard and love the Sai Kung seaside.

I will either stay in Hong Kong to coach and teach the next generation my skills or immigrate to Canada or Japan. The situation in Hong Kong has become more unforeseeable and both Canada and Japan seem like a better ‘outdoor’ environment to raise my children. Have you tried applying or organising schooling for kids in Hong Kong?

I am also a head coach and director, alongside my partner coach ‘Chewy’, at Rider Learning. Our company goes to schools and teaches children how to balance on two wheels with balance bikes, training wheels are a thing of the past.

ost conversations down at the pub tend to be forgotten after a few drinks and a night of sleep, but a group of Sai Kung men stayed true to their words and together with the help of a local photographer and graphic designer, made the naked calendar Tools with Tools to help raise funds for two of their chosen charities, The Movember Foundation and Catherine’s Puppies.

The calendar has been 6 weeks in the making and as the name suggests involves using various tools creatively positioned to cover the models’ dignity. “It was a pub conversation gone wrong that we decided to go ahead with to raise some money”, said Stuart Wadsworth who helped organise the project. “We’re a bunch of middle-aged men from Sai Kung, including several prominent restaurant owners, that decided to put together a charity calendar”.

Hopefully with the talent on show each month, it’s going to be a bestseller!

When asked who these prominent restaurant owners were, Wadsworth replied, “Sing Lai from Jaspas, Nathan Fleck from Cena before he left and Doug Marshall from Cava.”

“I was quite nervous to be honest but having persuaded everyone else to help out I couldn’t back out,” said Wadsworth. “We had a big family barbecue at my house along Tai Mong Tsai road and ran across the road to an AFCD barbecue site for the photo shoot,

hoping to avoid any 94 buses full of girl guides driving past.”

Andrew Gulliver who features in the calendar said, “It was my first time involved in something like this and if we can make this an annual event it won’t be the last.

Having an excellent photographer helped to take your mind off exactly what it was we were doing. Lots of laughing helped too. The photos were fantastic and the layout is very professionally done. I think people who knew what we were doing will be pleasantly surprised. But definitely not aroused!”

Paul Coyne, another model featured in the calendar, adds, “You’re taking all your clothes off in a public space, standing in front of a guy with a camera. Even drunk it wasn’t an easy thing to do.”

The photo shoot was Gabriel Dalton’s first as a photographer and proved to be challenging in more ways than one, “At first I found it a little uncomfortable taking the

pin-up boys photos but as I got through the shoot I was a little more relaxed. The most embarrassing moment for me was having to take photos of my manager Sing from Jaspas.”

I think people who knew what we were doing will be pleasantly suprised. But defintely not aroused

Graphic designer Nikki Stones was in charge of design, “As soon as Mr February said they were fundraising for Movember, I couldn’t say no. It’s a charity close to my heart as I have lost both my grandad and one of my best friends, who didn’t reach his 30th birthday, to prostate and testicular cancer. So for this reason, the fact I like puppies, plus a couple of Gin and Tonics later, I agreed to put the calendar together and I’m so glad I did. I think the calendar has come together really well. Hopefully with the talent on show each month, it’s going to be a bestseller.

We reached out to Catherine Lumsden, founder of Catherine’s Puppies, for her comments on the calendar, “Absolutely ridiculous yet tremendous. Those were my thoughts when I saw it, my eyes were teary with laughter. I would like to personally thank, with all my heart, all of the individuals involved in the calendar and I hope lots of people will buy one”. A launch party will be held at Sai Kung square on November 4, 5-8pm, come along to meet the models and some of the puppies the raised money will go towards helping.

500 copies of the calendar have been ordered but stocks are not expected to last, “Sai Kung is such a good community that we expect to sell all of these and hope to do extra print runs,” said Wadsworth. The calendar will be available to purchase at Cava, Cena, Jaspas, Butcher King, Kidnapped Book Shop, Sai Kung Sunday Markets, the Hive pop up market, Sunday morning at the Stingrays, The Picture House and online at toolswithtools.asia

Tai Wan Village

Jennifer Lee ventures to the village voted best in Sai Kung

T

he smell of the sea greets visitors to Tai Wan Village the minute they arrive. And with good reason. Slivers of the brilliant blue - or bottle green, depending on the weather - sea peek through between the row of two-storey houses that stand across the street, giving a tantalising taste of the beach that is only a little ways down. This village on the edge of Sai Kung Country Park joins Sai Wan, Ham Tin Wan and Tung Wan in forming part of Tai Long Wan and is about 90 minutes walk along the MacLehose Trail from Pak Tam Au. Originally inhabited by the Hakka people, it is now called home by both expatriates and locals. Recently, the village was voted ‘Best Sai Kung Village’ in our Readers’ Choice Awards, with many voters citing the friendly people, social community and the canoe club further down the road.

A tantalising taste of the beach that is only a little ways down The entrance to this residential village is flanked by three signs. One is for Tai Wan Village on the left, near a shop called ‘Mr Wong’s The Dong’ that sells beers, wines, juices and soft drinks, and a bus stop for routes 94, 96R, 99, 99R and 299X. The other side of the entrance has two signs - for Nam A and Wo Liu villages. Going just by the signs, first time visitors might wonder whether they’ve come to the right place. But fear not, because you have.

Past the entrance, the road into Tai Wan Village goes in two directions. One road winds to the left and leads deeper into wooded undergrowth. The other road goes between two houses that are far enough apart to allow cars to pass. To the left is a sandy-coloured ancestral hall for Sai Kung’s Ho family with a red, gold and burgundy interior. That’s not all

this part of the village has in store - stone steps lead up to houses that lie tucked into the hill above the hall and almost hidden by trees.

If you liked the sneak preview of the sea that you got as you walked in or up to the village, you’re in luck. A better view of the sea awaits those who take the left road and venture through the trees and a set of houses that were originally hidden from the street by trees and the houses in front of it. The road then peters off into a trail that leads into scrubby undergrowth.

But this route still has a surprise in store. This road forks to the right, and those who venture that way will be greeted by an explosion of red this building features a courtyard that leads into another ancestral hall.

The road that leads to the right is sandwiched by a white building with vertical aqua stripes that greets people as they enter the village, and a house that is barely visible behind trees, fences almost obscured by flora, and a rather ominous-looking black gate. It then opens up into a square bordered by houses, one of which is perched higher than the others and only accessible via a tall flight of stairs.

This house - and the one to its right - mark the end of the village, with the road between them leading up Nam A and Wo Liu villages.

Police blotter Sai Kung Divisional Commandor Daniel Tsang reports on the recent cases

- On October 6, the police found a suspicious

male and several tents set up in the hillside near Pak Kong, but the terrain was difficult and the male managed to escape. Later in the day, some stolen property was found which included watches, laptops, and cash. Victims who previously reported stolen property have been contacted to identify the items.

- There were seven reported incidents of fallen trees during the typhoon signal No 8. There was also one reported case of car front damage, and one reported dangerous sign board as a possible hazard.

- 20 tourists from mainland China reported

being stranded on Sharp Island while camping during the signal No 8 typhoon, prompting a rescue mission to bring them back.

- A search and rescue was sparked when a

male took two Russian female tourists on a

hike but failed to return home as his mother had expected. The search continued until the early hours of the morning before the police were informed the trio had returned safely.

- A village house on Hoi Pong Road was

broken into and burgled in broad daylight. The perpetrator made off with $26,600 worth of property which included jewelleries, electronic devices and cash. The homeowners were away during the incident, only to return in the early evening to find their living room window prised open. The police have reason to believe the culprit is someone within the community.

- On October 10, a 101M minibus caught on

fire whilst taking on passengers at the minibus terminus. Queuers first noticed the smoke and raised the alarm. The vehicle was evacuated successfully with no casualties. Investigations suggest it is likely there was a foreign object caught inside the vehicle which let to the fire.

- Around 9pm on October 2, a local couple who had been consuming alcohol were involved in a brawl along Man Nin Street. It was assumed that they had initiated a staring or verbal incident, which prompted three other members of the public to react physically.

From its humble beginings used by teens to post selfies with quick filters, the app has become

fame and opening up oppurtunities which were not presented before. I sit down with four individuals from Sai Kung and find out the story behind their Instagram account and the tips and tricks they used along the way.

...was born and raised in Hong Kong. Although not a photographer by profession, Sunny sees photography as an art of observation. He captures moments of everyday life from perspective of a local and believes that everyone should appreciate and find beautiful aesthetics hidden in their hometown.

What is your Instagram about?

Most of my work is based on street photography but I also take portraits. I wouldn’t say I have a fixed style or theme, rather I photograph whatever it is that interests me.

When did you start your Instagram account?

I started my Instagram account around three years ago, which was also around the same time I started dabbling in photography.

What made you join Instagram?

At the time I wanted to improve my photography quality and skills. Instagram was a way for me to get more reviews and feedback on my work from a wide range of people - helping me improve as a photographer.

How did you grow your Instagram following?

I found the most growth when I get featured by other Instagram accounts. These accounts repost other people’s photographs which makes it easier for people easy to find you. But for those feature accounts to find you in the first

place, you have to add their relevant hashtags, they often have these written in their bio.

What camera do you currently use?

What motivates you to go outside and take photographs?

Are there any apps/software you use to edit your process your images?

I want to capture all the special moments which happen on the streets in Hong Kong.

What is your favourite location to Instagram?

Sham Shui Po and Sheung Wan are my favourite places. Around these areas there are many old streets, shops and views which showcases another side of Hong Kong. You will be astonished by the old building designs, it’s so beautiful.

What do you look for when taking a photograph?

I take huge inspiration from the late Chinese photographer Fan Ho. He was a master at capturing light and shadow and these are things I also seek when I’m out shooting. Sometimes, humorous moments happen on the streets and I like to capture these too.

How do you capture those perfect moments on the street?

Patience is key. Just wait.

Has Instagram changed or affected your photography?

Sure, you will see a lot of great work from other photographers on Instagram and that motivates me to continue taking nice photos like them.

I’ve also made some great friends on Instagram after joining Instagram meetups.

You also take a lot of portraits, how do you find models to shoot with?

The models I go shoot with are my friends, some might be a friend of a friend.

Best tip for beginner photographers?

Bring your camera everywhere you go. You never know what you might come across.

Initially influenced by my dad’s love for trying new things, our entire family has always been easily excited by anything food-related. We especially love steak and durian - rarely in that combination though.

How long have you lived in Sai Kung?

I’ve been living in Sai Kung since I was 5 years old, which is why I feel so strongly about this beautiful side of Hong Kong that I am proud to call home. Since August 2017, I’ve been based in Singapore to pursue my MBA at INSEAD.

For those who don’t follow you, what is your Instagram all about?

My Instagram is all about inspiring people on all things food - whether it’s trying a new cuisine, restaurant or cooking a new dish, there’s so much variety out there that I would love to share with everyone. It makes me happy to infect people with the love for good food and even to trigger people’s cravings at midnight with a photo of a juicy steak.

How did the name lolleroll come about?

I laugh a lot. But since “lol” had become so overused, I started quoting variations: lols, lulz, lollers... lolleroll. I wish there was a deeper meaning to it, but it’s really purely for fun and I guess that just represents me.

When did you start using Instagram?

I’ve been using Instagram for many years, though it only started to become ‘all about food’ about three and a half years ago.

I personally feel that quality of photos is extremely important. Instagram is all about visual content and a good quality photo can go a long way in enticing people to try the dish that’s featured, or repeatedly grabbing their attention to eventually remember your account.

When did you notice your Instagram following starting to gain traction?

My Instagram started to gain traction when I started posting more regularly, as I started eating out more and trying new restaurants more

regularly. My photos became more searchable via hashtags and geotags, while some restaurants and food accounts also started reposting my content, which helped me build more followers.

How do you find all the incredible food you feature on your account?

At the start, the food I featured was simply whatever I encountered throughout the week.

But with more and more new restaurants opening up, I have become more selective.

I usually do research by looking at photos and reading reviews on different channels.

Instagram is my favourite channel. It’s time consuming to scroll through, but gives you the most authentic information.

Have you had any awkward moments whilst instagramming in a restaurant?

When I’m dining with friends I’ve just met, I try my best to keep my camera in my bag… But when the dishes look too good, I tough out the judgmental looks and whip out my camera.

The moment people demonstrate shock and embarrassment that I’m using a proper camera to photograph food on the table (without

Most Instagrammable food place in Sai Kung?

The famous pineapple bun from Sai Kung cafe is not only epic in taste, but also in looks. MONI stand is another instagrammable favourite - this vinyl records coffee shop is hidden in an alley, hipster-ish and their flat whites and cappuccinos are amazing.

I also love that people come to me for food recommendations, which gives me a chance to connect to even more new people.

What are your future plans?

My dream is to start my own ‘thing’: a coffee shop. But for now, I’m still working on my career and hence the MBA I’m currently pursuing.

How to achieve great flat lays?

I’m definitely still practicing my flat lays. But I think the key is good lighting to avoid shadows, one to two relevant props and some contrast in colours.

What are some top tips for people looking to up their foodgram game?

Have an eye for good lighting, take the time/ effort to clean up the table and post the foods you genuinely love.

I wanted a place to keep all my memories and Instagram was perfect for this. So I began treating it like a diary for my yoga journey.

How many photos does it take to get the perfect one?

It typically takes three to four pictures before I get the one which I then post on Instagram.

The most it would probably take is around 10 pictures.

How has Instagram helped you?

I’m not entirely sure myself, but maybe it has given me more motivation to do better and be better as a yoga teacher and ballroom dancer. Instagram has also opened me up to photography and I now enjoy taking beautiful pictures.

What oppurtunities have you found through your Instagram?

I’ve managed to get some free products as a result of my Instagram. Things I typically receive include make-up products and sportswear. But I wouldn’t say it has led to more yoga students nor more recognition as a ballroom dancer.

Are there any challenges or responsibilities to having such a large following?

Yes. The biggest challenge is that it’s hard to keep the Instagram account active for my followers. I try to post pictures every day but this obviously requires a lot of content which can take a lot of effort and time.

Although it’s a digital platform, it’s important to just be yourself. Besides that, add many hashtags, and like and leave comments on other people’s Instagram.

When did you start using Instagram?

I’ve been on Instagram since 2013 with a personal account but chopsticksontheloose actually began around 2 years ago. My partner and I started the account together when we began travelling and wanted a way to document our journey for our friends and family to follow along - it became our travel diary.

What is your Instagram all about?

Our Instagram is all about the travel and adventures we experience. Exploring Hong Kong has also become a big part of our account as we moved here just after we left the UK. We settled in Sai Kung to rediscover our family roots while travelling the rest of Asia.

Why the name chopsticksontheloose?

‘Chopsticks’ represents our Chinese background, whilst ‘on the loose’ refers to us dropping our stable lifestyle in the UK to travel and experience life abroad.

Pros and cons with running a joint Instagram account?

The best thing is we get to bounce creativity off each other - like they say, two heads are better than one. We also travel together alot so it saves us doing the work twice and makes things easier

Who takes the pictures?

We both do – typically the photos with one person in will be taken by the other. For times we both want to be in the shot, we set up a tripod. For landscape shots, we usually take turns with the camera to accommodate our different perspectives.

Fujifilm X-T1, with three different lenses: 35mm

f/2, 10-24mm f/4, and a 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6.

What apps or software do you use to edit your images?

A combination of Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop on the computer and the app Snapseed on the phone.

Do you think people are starting to live their lives through lenses?

I think social media plays a big part in the way lots of people live their lives - whether good or bad depends on each individual. What everyone using any social media should remember is that we only typically see the highlight reel of the story. I love to take photos of sunrises as they make for pretty images, but what my followers don’t see is the alarm clock ringing at 4am so I can haul myself out of bed and set off to take the photograph.

Any tips for anyone wanting to start an Instagram account on travel?

Be prepared for many early mornings and many late nights. These are generally the best times to visit places before tourists swarm the place.

Also, don’t create photographs for validation or to be known. These things come naturally to people who do what they love.

he intense pressure students experience whilst going through the Hong Kong Education system has been a hot topic for 2017. When I first arrived in Hong Kong, it surprised me to learn that even children as young as 2 are sometimes expected to undergo interviews.

But HK Forest Adventures, a forest school focused on outdoor-based learning, are hoping to break the mould - allowing kids to be just what they are, kids.

Their campus is located on the hillsides of Ma On Shan just a few minutes walk from Tai Shui Hang MTR station. On my visit, I simply followed the bright green signs as they lead me through Tai Shui Hang Village. It was obvious I was going the correct direction as the sound of children’s play and laughter gradually got louder.

who could not sit still in class, “After observing a battle of will - between the teacher and the toddler, it dawned on me that maybe the reason this little boy could not sit still was not that he was naughty but rather he was never designed to sit still at this age. I have heard of Forest Kindergartens in Europe and I wondered if it could work here too? So I approached a few parents with toddlers and asked them if they would join me in an eight-week program

What I witnessed during those first few weeks was nothing short of miraculous. I couldn’t believe how quick Hong Kong kids responded to nature - it was like a fish to water. In no time they were picking up sticks, throwing stones and looking for worms. After the first eight weeks the parents asked if we can run for another eight weeks, so eight weeks became 16, and 16 became 32, and that’s how we started”, said Strydom.

The classrooms at HK Forest Adventures aren’t limited within the confines of walls but instead utilizes the surrounding nature. On my campus tour, I’m guided past a colourfully constructed playground which I’m told was helped constructed by the children, a garden full of growing vegetables, a children’s zip-line and finally to the teachers and children playing down in the stream.

Strydom explains the reason he believes it is important to let the children play, “We don’t teach Phonics, math, Mandarin or even English for that matter. However what we do teach is how to climb trees, how to find worms, how to make mud cupcakes and how to play in the water and climb over rocks. Most of what we do and focus on will never be seen.

Our programs are based on helping children achieve their developmental milestones and most of that development happens inside the brain. Our programs hope to boost sensory and motor development. Even the simplest act of walking on uneven surfaces helps toddlers develop their pre-reading skills. Play is essential for a child’s sensory and motor development. The cold hard truth is that when you compare today’s children to past generations, they just can’t keep up. Children are getting weaker, less resilient and less imaginative. They’re having trouble paying

attention in school, experiencing difficulty controlling emotions and having trouble safely navigating their environment - play helps with all of that”.

Leading the class was Marnick Van Eslander, a teacher and conservationist who has been passionate about nature and wildlife since childhood. “We bring kids into nature and look for fishes, frogs, fireflies and more. If they don’t have a good experience with nature when they’re younger, they won’t look after it when they’re older”, said Van Eslander. “What we want to step away from is the traditional education system in Hong Kong. There’s so much pressure that they don’t have the time to be a kid anymore.” Strydom adds, “I have never tried to set out to change or replace schools. All I hope is to better prepare kids to have a successful, fulfilling and positive school experience. I want to delay the inevitable. My hope is that I can have them play just a little longer. Play prepare kids for school. Play is the work of children.”

Playing in nature, there are times when safety can be of concern, but the teachers at HK Forest Adventures are well prepared, Van Eslander explains, “All staff are first aid trained and will undergo a course specific for the outdoors. For us safety comes first.

The classes are kept to a maximum of 24 children with six teachers who either speak Cantonese or English. “Although we don’t teach language directly, we continuously expose children to both language at all times.

NIBBLES Floating restaurant closes down After 15 years of operation, Star Seafood Floating Restaurant in Sha Tin, formerly and more famously known as Treasure Floating Restaurant, is closing. What has been billed as the largest dim sum restaurant in Hong Kong will become even bigger. The new owner, Club One, specializes in one-stop wedding services and plans to turn the floating restaurant into the city’s largest banquet hall with 300 tables.

F

inding the right home can sometimes seem like a battle of compromises, often between location and size. But this property located in The Portofino, a luxury development in Clearwater Bay, seems to tick both boxes. The four-storey 3,708 squarefoot house is just a convenient 10 minute drive from Hang Hau MTR station yet also enjoys a full sea view over Sheung Sze Wan. The owners of the house have been living here for over 10 years, originally relocating from Hong Kong Island due to a desire for a change in scenery and to seek a property of better value for their money. With four bedrooms, a swimming pool, rooftop terrace and enough parking space outside for two vehicles it’s hard to argue otherwise.

Despite its relatively large size, the home wastes little space. Step through the front entrance and it immediately opens up to the spacious living room. Floor-to-ceiling windows adorn one side which not only provides a

The tall ceiling, around 14 inches, has also been maximised by ditching dangling light fixtures for recessed ones. The homeowners prefered a more modern minimalist style and have gone with a neutral colour palette of white, black, grey and brown to create a look which doesn’t distract from the outside view.

home & living style design because they wanted to maximise the space and create a sense of a much larger room. Stepping into the next room, it was refreshing to see a generously sized kitchen, something very rare in Hong Kong homes as this is typically the first place sacrificed.

The four bedrooms, three of which are ensuites, are all split between the different floors but each still benefits from large windows, lots of natural light and great views. The lowest floor houses the entertainment room which connects down to the patio with plenty of space for sun loungers and a swimming pool - perfect for entertaining guests. But if this wasn’t enough, the house also has a rooftop terrace with panoramic views over the sea.

Bend it like the Spaniards

Jennifer Lee finds out more about Creative Secondary School’s football tour to Spain

T

his year’s Hong Kong School’s football season had an early start for some students from Creative Secondary School. 10 students, ranging from Form 1 to Form 4 and ages 11 to 15, marked the beginning of the season with a football tour. “We thought it’d be nice to do a tour, get more people involved and get them excited about football - not just playing but going somewhere else and playing high-level football,” said coach and teacher Paul Stanley, who was put in charge of the team last year.

So when the chance came via Gredos San Diego Schools (GSD), he and fellow teacher Samantha Bevan took the opportunity to take the students on a 12-day trip through Spain involving football, sightseeing and cultural immersion. “It was a chance to get in a few fixtures and training to get our football teams up and running before the Hong Kong football

season started,” said Stanley.

But why Spain? “We got together with the students to decide whether they wanted to go to Spain or England”, said Stanley.

“Their consensus was that Spain would be the place to go.” Spain’s reputation as a football powerhouse certainly helped sway the decision. “Being European champions, some of the best players play there - they have a reputation for excellence,” Stanley continued.

“Many of the students support Real Madrid and Barcelona, so I know a lot of them were excited.”

The students played a few friendly fixtures against GSD Sports Club football team and GSD Moratalaz, winning 1-0 and losing 4-2.

Christopher So was man of the match in the first game, scoring the winning goal against the GSD Sports Club football team; and Justin Chan was selected as man of the match for the the second game. The students also got the chance to watch some football. For some of them, the two matches they saw - Chelsea vs Athletico Madrid and Real Madrid vs Espanyol - were a chance to see their idols in action. “We couldn’t have chosen better games to go to,” Stanley said. “When Chelsea scored the last winning goal, the mood was just electric. We even got to see Ronaldo, it was fantastic.”

“It was a once in a lifetime opportunity and a highly educational trip - I think we all enjoyed it very much. There was an excellent blend of football, culture and food, and we also got to experience school life in Spain in both Madrid and Barcelona,” said student Rosie Woodman of the trip.

So what’s next for the school’s football team? According to Stanley, they hope to aim for bigger and better things. “Seeing the development of the players over a short period of time was amazing. We aim to make it bigger next year - it was really successful,” Stanley tells us. “We’re eager to show the parents and students the clips of our time there. We’re hoping to build and take full squads out next year. It was such a positive experience, and we’d love to do it again. Taking two teams would be brilliant.”

Ng Tung Chai Waterfalls Tara Smyth beats the heat in Tai Mo Shan

T

his year has seen scorching temperatures and record rainfall across the region. Getting out on the hiking trails these last few months has been no mean feat, even for the hardiest of trail hikers.

One solution is to find a trail that either regularly crosses streams, or leads you to rock pools and waterfalls for a cooling-off dip. Enter Ng Tung Chai Waterfall Path, over on the North side of Tai Mo Shan. Not only are the pools refreshing, pristine and crystal clear, but the waterfalls that feed them are breathtaking.

Taking the most direct route, you will need to get yourself to Ng Tung Chai Road off Lam Kam Road (a little east of Kadoorie Farm & Botanic Garden). If you are driving, there is a small car park half way up this road—this might get busy at weekends.

You will see signs for “waterfalls” periodically placed along Ng Tung Chai Road. Continue up for about 700 metres before reaching the trailhead. Once on the trail you will come across a temple, named Man Tak Garden, on your right within a few minutes. I have never seen it open and therefore never been able to explore what is behind the confines of its ornate walls and gate, but it seems like a tranquil place set in a stunning location.

Just one minute after the temple you will come across a small water catchment with a nice waterfall flowing into it. Compared with what is to come, this pool is tiny and not worth the stop for a dip. Having said that, I did manage to squeeze myself, and 10 Scouts, into this little catchment on one occasion—just for the fun of it!

A few minutes later you will arrive at a fork in the path, an information board and a sign saying “Tai Mo Shan Country Park”. The right hand fork will take you all the way up to Tai Mo Shan, bypassing all the waterfalls. Ignore this path and take the trail sign-posted “Tai Mo Shan via Waterfalls”.

Here the trail becomes steeper and a touch more challenging. It’s a no-go for toddlers and young children who are partial to a good whinge and whine. For the inexperienced hiker it may seem tough, but it is not impossible and the rewards are worth the effort. Wear proper training shoes and do not be tempted to tackle this trail in Crocs, TEVAs or flip-flops.

You will reach the first waterfall, unsurprisingly named “Bottom Fall”, after around 15 minutes of climbing. Duck off the path to the left (at the signpost) for 20 metres or so to reach the pool and the fall. This fall and pool alone

are worth the journey—the spot is so stunning and secluded that you may wish to stay here for the rest of the day and not bother with the rest.

However, there is bigger and better to come, so after a dip and a snack here, do consider making the effort to continue up.

“Middle Fall” is close by—less than 10 minutes—and is another beautiful spot. Again it might be tempting to kick back and spend the rest of the day here. The waterfall is mesmerizing.

The path gets steeper and narrower from here on, so if your kids are moaning beyond

don’t go chasing... acceptable levels then stay where you are and enjoy. If, however, the kids are chomping at the bit to continue up, hit the trail again and brace yourselves—the best is yet to come!

Take it slowly; take regular, short rest stops if you need to; and do take care to watch your footing. The irregularly stepped path is steep and narrow in places. Here would be a good place to advise your kids to face forward and walk in single file, whilst hiking on tricky paths.

After about 30 minutes you will reach the “Main Fall” and here is where your reward awaits. A large pool fed by a single, narrow, 30 metre waterfall—perfect for swimming and fairly shallow so good for the kids too. The pool is also great for dogs. The stones that lie on the bottom of this shallow pool offer a striking mosaic of colours and shapes in the sunshine.

Large boulders around the pool allow you to take up residence for a few hours, enjoy a picnic and forget the stresses and strains of your normal life back in the big city.

There is one more fall, a little further up, called “Scatter Fall” but, the last time I visited, a landslip had made the path a little precarious in parts. Having experienced the aforementioned three falls and their pools already, continuing up to Scatter Fall could be worth it for hardy hikers, but it’s not a necessity for the average family.

Fall, turn around and head back down to Lam Kam Road when you are done. Take care with

your footing—going downhill can be just as hard, if not harder, as going uphill—and enjoy the views laid out before you, which you would not have seen on the way up.

ood news. The government is to take the call for improved walkability seriously. The Transport Department has invited proposals for a Consultancy Study on Enhancing Walkability.

Two related studies will be commissioned simultaneously: the Feasibility Study on Pedestrian Connectivity from Wan Chai to Sheung Wan in Hong Kong Island North; and the Review of Assessment Mechanism for Hillside Escalator Links and Elevator Systems.

The opening of the invitation opening sets out the vision.

“Reducing traffic congestion and promoting walking form a virtuous cycle: the more people walk, the less the traffic is congested.

Furthermore, Hong Kong people are becoming more health conscious and aspire to a low carbon lifestyle. With an aging population, improved walking environments can better cater for the non-vehicular needs of the elderly to commute and integrate into the community.

As a free mode of travel, walking and, more importantly, a good walking environment, are also the cornerstones of a socially equitable society.”

Importantly, the government has recognized the need to update the Transport Planning and Design Manual and the Hong Kong Planning Standards and Guidelines. This is long overdue. We are dramatically lagging behind London and New York. The study recognizes that both cities have made enormous

improvements in favour of pedestrians over the last two decades. The invitation requires the consultants to formulate a new transport planning framework and to take reference from the Street Design Manual formulated under Mayor Bloomberg in New York City, and the UK Government’s Manual for Streets (1 and 2), which reflect the latest thinking in transport planning, street design and public spaces.

The studies will take into account our ageing population and hilly terrain, looking into personal mobility devices as well as escalators and elevators. Most interesting will be the showcases.

The consultants are asked to select two areas to demonstrate the new ideas. I hope that one of the areas will be Central–Admiralty, as it is one of the most complicated areas to work with. Get it right here, and Hong Kong can export its ideas not just to the rest of the city, but to other hyper-dense Asian cities too.

“How do I dog-proof my apartment?”

ne of my favourite walks I like to go on with my dog Pipi is up Ma On Shan (Saddle Hill). The trek up to the top might not be the most relaxing Sai Kung walk but with good directions this trail is bound to be enjoyable for you and your dog. I prefer to start my outing along Sai Sha Road and finish with a nice decline leading into Sai Kung town. This trail is dog-friendly, but make sure to bring plenty water for both you and your dog as there are no shops along the way. The best part about bringing your dog to the top of Saddle Hill are the great photos you’re bound to take.

For those who live slightly further away, take a taxi to Kei Ling Ha Lo Wai. Bus 99, 99R and 299X can also take you here but do remember that dogs are not allowed on. After alighting at Kei Ling Ha Lo Wai, continue walking along Sai Sha Road so that you’re walking away from the barbecue pit area. Keep on the left and soon you’ll notice a set of stairs leading up the hillside, head up these and once you’ve located a sign towards Ngong Ping you’re already on your way. Keep heading towards Ngong Ping until you see a cross road and sign letting you know you’re now on MacLehose Trail Stage 4. Take the right path going towards Wong Chuk Yeung and it will take you to the summit point (Trigonometric Point). There are a few junctions to be wary of but just stick to MacLehose Trail Stage 4 and the marked signs and you’ll be on track. From the top you’ll have a panoramic view of Sai Kung town - the hardest parts are now over. When you’ve taken enough selfies, head down the opposite direction of where you came up, still following the MacLehose trail, and follow signs leading into Sai Kung. This will take you behind Ngong Ping, but it will be worth your time to head out onto the Ngong Ping hillside for an even closer look of Sai Kung below. Head Ma On Shan down the final set of stairs into Tai Shui Tseng and make your way back into town via Po Lo Che.

Consider why you want to dog proof your apartment. New pups should be trained for some time so they can learn what is good behavior and what is not—they simply have no idea.

Preventing the development of misbehavior is much easier than stopping established misdeeds! Training a dog to happily stay in a ‘cage’ or a ‘den’ when you are out is well worth the effort. It keeps them safe as well as out of trouble. Chewing, digging, scratching and inappropriate toileting are some of the major ‘crimes’ dogs commit especially when they are bored! Being starved of an enriched environment, lacking social play/mates or being endlessly left alone can lead to these unwanted behaviors.

“My dog keeps pulling on the lead when we go for walks. How do I stop this?”

Pulling on the lead is a very unpleasant experience. Though easier to prevent by training when young, stopping pulling can still be achieved in an older dog. Your dog needs to learn that the reward of walking forward only happens with a loose lead. If your dog pulls on the lead you must stop walking and wait for them to come back. It will take time and patience; rewarding your dog with treats when they come back will hasten the training process. Head halters and harnesses can also be useful. These can be bought at most vet clinics or good pet stores but take care to fit them properly so not to cause damage.

“My dog breathes heavily for a long time after a run in the park, what should I do?”

My recommendation is based on better being ‘safe than sorry’. Take your dog to your vet for a physical exam.

This problem of ‘respiratory distress’ may be caused by something simple like your dog being unfit, or overweight, or the environment—it may be too warm for your dog to run around, or perhaps they are so excited by having playmates that play becomes excessive and they get ‘out of puff’. On the other hand, there could be some underlying pathology going on which only your vet can detect after a full physical check-up. Your vet may recommend further tests if he or she suspects an internal problem.

In the garden

H

ave this year’s flowers and vegetables not gone your way? This might just be your lucky month. November arrives with cooler weather but it might not always feel like it as temperatures can seesaw from 12 °C (56 °F) to 29 °C (84 °F). But November has the perfect weather to try and recoup losses if things haven’t gone your way this year. And even if the gardening gods have decided to bless you with their favour, there’s still a lot to do before winter comes. It’s time to pull out your long sleeves as you get ready to do some triage and preparatory work.

If it hasn’t been done already, now is the time to make a second sowing of any annuals that have failed. Any coleus propagates should stand over the winter.

It’s also time to prepare some plants to stand for the winter. Any tender-leaved plants, such as fittonias, panadnus veitchii, peperomias and arthuriums, should now be taken out of the elements and into the most sheltered positions. If possible, they should be put under glass.

Speaking of annuals, even if they are doing well this year, it’s no time to relax - many will still require potting. Liliums ordered earlier from Japan should have arrived and will need potting. Narcissus tazetta, or Chinese sacred lily, also requires potting. Remember, though, that they need to be potted and planted in beds. Carnations can be potted as well - but pot them individually into four-inch pots.

November is also the time to try and rescue any vegetables that didn’t take during the first planting in October – or, if you got lucky then, to try for more.

Remember to tie up lettuce before you blanch them. In the summer, lettuce plants will never be big enough to tie up. But with November’s cooler weather, they’ll finally be big enough for this to be done. This month is also the time to plant your celery, potatoes, cabbages, cauliflower, endive and kohlrabi.

For those who planted beds of celery and potatoes, now is the moment of truth, because it’s time to earth them up and see how they did.

Stormy weather What a year eh! We’ve survived more typhoons than usual, hotter weather than usual and, I confidently predict that the coming winter will also prove to be unlike previous winters. And yet the reality of climate change continues to be a matter of controversy. All this matters in a place like Sai Kung where, thank goodness, we are not confined to the kind of Hong Kong existence experienced by a great many people who rarely venture down to street level as they dive underground for the MTR or glide upwards towards shopping malls and walkways. The external environment therefore simply passes them by. This kind of life would not suit me, nor, I suspect would it suit most readers of this magazine. Therefore I have resolved to stop complaining about the weather because the more extreme it becomes the more interesting it becomes. I notice vegetation growing faster, colours deepening and yes, it can be in equal parts exciting and destructive – thankfully however the level of destruction can be handled, at least I hope so.

Sai Kung’s cinematic heritage It’s good news to learn that the old Steamers bar has been transformed into a pub named The Picture House. This is a nod to Sai Kung history because it stands on the corner of a building which used to be a cinema that opened in 1958, a time when residents had a very long journey if they wished to leave the peninsula and go into town. It is hard to pin down when the cinema closed but it was sometime in the 1970s when many other Hong Kong cinemas were also shutting their doors. After the closure the auditorium was transformed into a restaurant and subsequently shops were developed on the ground floor level. If you look very carefully at the building it is just about possible to recognise an edifice that once served as a cinema.

While we are on the subject it is worth recalling that Sai Kung and adjoining districts were once the heart of the local film industry.

Most people know about the iconic Shaw Brothers Studios in Clearwater Bay, which opened its doors in 1961 and ceased its film making business in the 1990s but fewer people are aware of the nearby Clearwater Bay Studio, which preceded the Shaw Brothers Studio by two years and remains in operation as a facilities

house and studio space for a variety of production companies.

Travel south towards Diamond Hill and you will no longer see any remnants of this areas’ once flourishing film industry. Not only was it home to the famous Golden Studios but also to Cathay Asia Film and a veritable host of production houses making films in Cantonese, Mandarin, Chiuchow and even Hoklo. It was truly a hub of film making with a mass of small specialist operators supporting the bigger studios. As is the way in Hong Kong this glorious history has largely been expunged from the record.

Nowadays Sai Kung residents wishing to go the cinema need to embark on quite a journey to get there and when they do they generally find a poor choice of films and a choice of less than appetising auditoria. However there is a singular exception to this rule, which is the rather underused Metorplex at the Kowloon Bay International Trade and Exhibition Centre. A big plus for car owning Sai Kung residents is that parking is free for patrons. Lamentably public transport users are less well served as a journey from Sai Kung requires at least one change of buses or a complicated bus ride, plus MTR, plus mini-bus combination.

All you need is a boat Work will soon begin on the renovation of two small local public piers as part of the government’s grandiosely named Pier Improvement Programme.

Ten piers are earmarked for this scheme, including the two in Sai Kung. Both of them are located in extremely interesting places. The Leung Shuen Wan village pier is situated in a part of High Island which was transformed by the building of the reservoir.

The centre point of the village is its Tin Hau Temple.

This is well worth a visit as is the Kau Sai Village pier, forget about the better known golf course in these parts and take time out to visit the renovated Hung Shing Temple, a rewarding experience. Now all you need is a boat to get you there.
