Technology has advanced at a rapid pace over the last couple of decades, and the recent pandemic has been a catalyst for forcing people to adopt a digital model of working in a short period of time. In terms of architecture, technology plays a vast role in determining the outcome of the building – with regards to the material, physical behaviour, form, comfort, and sustainability of the architecture, and many of these things are already quite widespread in practice and are being innovated every day. But have these advances and innovations reflected in the Architectural Education practice?

The ICON-BEST (International Conference on Built Environment, Science and Technology) Conference is a platform to discuss the advances that technology has a role to play in the future of architectural practice. The objective of Ethos, since 2002, has been to nurture and empower the future of Architectural practice, i.e. current students of architecture. Over the past 18 years, we have had experiences in curating and executing various events, competitions, courses, campaigns, and extra-curricular activities for students and young professionals of the ACED Fraternity (Architecture, Construction, Engineering, and Design).

The state of Architectural education has been rapidly growing to catch up to the current advances in technology, but the traditional methods and tools of education on campus are still very much the same as they were decades ago. With the onset of e-learning and online classrooms becoming the mainstream, the tools of teaching and learning are going digital, and this can be seen as a disadvantage to many. But it is not to be ignored that this also opens up a plethora of untapped possibilities, some of which we will discuss in terms of blended learning, allowance of self-paced education, guided approaches to design competitions and access to resources that are not limited by physical boundaries.

SMART HABITAT FOUNDATION

CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE FOR ART, ARCHITECTURE & HUMAN SETTLEMENTS

MESSAGE

Architecture mostly looks upon the design processes and its innovation, while the study of architecture mostly revolves around design studios. In today’s global and dynamic architecture with ocean of new innovative materials, we need to look beyond core architecture and attain a comprehensive understanding of various elements of applied architecture and inculcate them into a more holistic architectural design approach.

Realizing the need to create a platform where there can be a serious dialogue between the academics and the practice in the field of Art and Architecture and creating sustainable smart human settlement, an eminent group of professionals, Prof. Charanjit Singh Shah, Ar. Gurpreet Singh Shah and Prabhpreet Singh Shah; have established the SMART HABITAT FOUNDATION which is fully supported technically, financially and administratively by M/s. Creative Group with complete infrastructure conference hall, pre-functional hall, display centre, studio, library and other academic and administrative facilities by creating the same at S-21, Hargovind Enclave, Main Chhatarpur, New Delhi 110074. Smart Habitat Foundation is a center of excellence in pursuit of Art - Architecture - Urban Planning - Transport - Infrastructure to support educational excellence and promote interaction between practicing architects and budding students of architecture, in order to bridge the gap between architects, practitioners, academicians and students, promoting an all-round holistic understanding and learning of the noble profession of architecture.

The realm of architecture is full of ambiguities where subjectivity plays a major role in design feasibility. After five years of intensive architectural education when one enter into the professional on-site field work, the academic background of conscious sustainable design approach often fades away under the influence of commercial and political influences. On the other hand academicians, isolated in their shells, stay unaware of the contemporary technologies and materials which lead to lack of interest and passion amongst the young generation of architects. This disconnect is currently ruining the urban fabric of our cities and at Smart Habitat Foundation we take the initiative to the best of our ability to bridge this gap and build a better pathway for a glorious tomorrow.

INDIAN GREEN BUILDING COUNCIL

MESSAGE

Greetings from CII IGBC !!

The 18th edition of Green Building Congress was inaugurated by Shri M Venkaiah Naidu, Honourable Vice President of India, who encouraged all stakeholders to embrace green measures and also suggested that Governments and Urban Local Bodies can offer tax incentives to catalyse the green building movement.

“India does not choose between environment and development; we firmly believe these two are not contrary but complementary to each other, and together make development process holistic, sustainable and resilient. With green built environment as an underlying basis, we are striving to enhance our construction capabilities for affordable housing and building houses as per varied geographical conditions of different parts of the country. The role of institutions such as IGBC in the construction and certification of ‘Green Buildings’, at par with global standards, acquires a critical importance in reducing carbon footprint.

Shri Narendra Modi, Honorable Prime Minister of India, with an inspirational leadership at the helm, the goal of greening the built environment is of paramount importance for each one of us in IGBC In the year 2020 the disruption caused due to the pandemic pushed us even harder towards the National goal. With the support of all stakeholders, India today stands tall with 771 billion sq ft of green building footprint from over 6222 projects.

The ICON-BEST (International Conference on Built Environment, Science and Technology) - a platform to discuss the advancement in Green and sustainable building and various Green Building technologies which has a major role to play in the present and future of architectural and designing of any built environment.
