PHOTOGRAPHY DEPARTMENT CATALOG 2019-2020

Our dear colleague, Lewis Toby, has recently retired after twenty-eight years of service for the Photography Department. Lewis is the rare practitioner capable of bridging the gap between fine arts and commercial photographic practice. During his time at SAIC, Lewis developed the curriculum for our lighting classes and tirelessly championed the establishment of our professional lighting studios. Lewis is known for his technical wit, ability to demystify difficult processes, expertise in black and white, large format, and editorial photography, and above all, for his infectious passion for the photographic medium. We are and will remain indebted to him for his service to this department and wish him the best in all future endeavors.

Self Portrait, 2011

What makes a photograph worth looking at? Or put differently, what makes a good photograph? You will spend (or have spent) four years of your life spinning around this question, so I figure it’s a question worth asking point blank. What makes you want to look at something for more than a second? I’m not asking this question for an answer but rather, to have it sit in your mind. I’ve spent the past two semesters continually surprised, dumbfounded, stilled, expanded and moved by the experimentation, excitement and depth of work I’ve seen coming out of SAIC photo students. The will to understand the world (which I too often forget is one of the many purposes of art) through the impulse to look at, talk about, and think about photographs is an impulse that can be both insurmountably brave and incredibly selfish. We spend our days distilling life into flat surfaces, we also spend our days asking ourselves what it means to be alive. It starts simply. There was the kid who spent a semester showing us his father so that he could see himself. Another student whose financial woes became institutional critique. The person whose own body led our class through a map of trauma in their state. Another whose disparate selves opened up a treasure trove of questions around race and family. One more whose tics and obsessions became a larger question about learned habits, and left the class with the question, should one replace one obsession (or addiction maybe) with another? And yet another student whose questions around performance and movement and its occasional conflict with the impermeable stillness of photography, still have me breathless. And others whose impulses to investigate the structure and the purpose of light (without which nothing would be seen) through the creation of photographs has allowed me to remember photography’s importance, its magic, its Sisyphean tick. This is a catalog of your work. It’s what your classmates are doing, what your friends are doing, what your lovers are doing. It’s what the kid you’ve had a class with every semester but don’t know that well is doing. It’s what you’ve critiqued in class and loved or could care less about. It’s a catalog of what the revolving cast of people you sit next to day after day and walk past month after month for four years are thinking about, dreaming about, wishing for, and mostly, just trying to understand. Inside this catalog are your concerns, your questions, your fears and your successes. Inside this catalog is you. So, I’ll return to the question. What makes a photograph good? What makes a photograph worth looking at? I believe by looking at the work in this catalog you’ll be able to see how you’ve answered this question for yourselves. With all my love, Sasha Phyars-Burgess Visiting Artist 2019-2020
