Dear Friends and Colleagues, The 2017–18 academic year was filled with the same excellence in student achievement, faculty accomplishment, and institutional success that are hallmarks of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC). The events, programs, and achievements chronicled in this annual report underscore SAIC’s continued place as a world leader in educating the artists, designers, and scholars who shape our shared society for the better.

Among the most notable triumphs was the successful end of Beautiful/Work: The Campaign for SAIC, which raised $55.2 million for student scholarships, faculty support, and other programming. Exceeding its goal by more than 10 percent, our first-ever School-only fundraising campaign allows SAIC to continue to attract and train the world’s leading thinkers and makers.

It created eight faculty endowments and, for students, 39 new endowed scholarship funds, accounting for more than half of the campaign’s total.

This includes new merit scholarships that will cover the full cost of tuition for 10 graduate students, and nearly 90 Chicago Public Schools students are now able to pursue an undergraduate education.

Supporting students and faculty also buoys the vital conversations SAIC initiates in the public sphere. For example, the School, in partnership with the University of Chicago, commissioned the exhibition Dimensions of Citizenship for the US Pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale. The exhibition, which included SAIC faculty and alums among the curatorial team and exhibitors, explored how the built environment shapes our notions of what it means to be a citizen. This ambitious and timely exhibition, which Curbed called “a profound, urgent entreaty and a faint but persistent signal of hope,” is just one example of how SAIC contributed to our shared society last year.

Our influence was also marked by significant undertakings, prestigious awards, and remarkable milestones. On campus, we renovated the historic Columbus Drive Building; we received a Higher Education Civic Engagement Award as well as, for the fourth year in a row, the Higher Education Excellence in Diversity Award; and our student wellness programming was featured on NBC’s Today Show. Our faculty were recognized with grants and fellowships from the Graham, the 3Arts, and the Robert Rauschenberg foundations and prizes including the Berlin Prize, the Meier Achievement Award, and the Artadia Award. SAIC remains one of the top Fulbright producing art-and-design schools, and Trevor Paglen (MFA 2002) received a MacArthur Fellowship.

As you read the stories included in this Year in Review, you will understand the talent we marshal and community we build on campus and beyond. We will draw upon this community—including our newly appointed Dean of Faculty Martin Berger and Chair of the Board of Governors Anita K. Sinha—as we begin to work on NEXT: SAIC Strategic Plan. Written last year, it included input from more than 1,700 faculty, staff, students, and board members and established how we will make SAIC’s future as fruitful as any of our past 152 years.

ANITA K. SINHA TOOK HELM OF SAIC’S BOARD OF GOVERNORS SAIC’s Board of Governors elected Anita K. Sinha to serve as its new chair.

Sinha and her husband, Prabhakant Sinha, are longtime supporters of SAIC and the Art Institute of Chicago. She is the first woman to occupy the position and succeeded Cary D. McMillan as the leader of SAIC’s Board of Governors.

SAIC WELCOMED 13 NEW FULL-TIME FACULTY MEMBERS SAIC welcomed 13 new faculty members in the 2018–19 academic year.

In the last two years, six of the new full-time faculty members were former part-time faculty. The new faculty members, who teach in six departments across the School, include: Julietta Cheung (Contemporary Practices), Hương Ngô (Contemporary Practices), Marie Hermann (Ceramics), Salvador Jiménez-Flores (Ceramics), Jade Yumang (Fiber and Material Studies), Danielle Andress (Fiber and Material Studies), Kirin WachterGrene (Liberal Arts), Suma Ikeuchi (Liberal Arts), Ryan Edwards (Liberal Arts), Jeremy Biles (Liberal Arts), Maura Frana (Visual Communication Design), Piotr Michura (Visual Communication Design), and Mike Cloud (Painting and Drawing).

NEXT: SAIC STRATEGIC PLAN More than 1,700 students, faculty, staff, board members, alums, and friends of SAIC participated in feedback and listening sessions throughout the year to arrive at NEXT: SAIC Strategic Plan, which was crafted by the Strategic Planning Visioning Committee. NEXT will guide collective efforts during the implementation phase of the plan, beginning in the 2018–19 academic year.

SAIC STUDENT TOOK FIRST PRIZE AT BOSCH HACKATHON SAIC student Ravina Puri (BFA 2018) and her teammates from DePaul University took home first prize at the Bosch Urban Mobility Hackathon.

The team won for their concept called GOcery, which uses technology to address food deserts.

Beautiful/Work: The Campaign for SAIC raised $55.2 million to ensure that SAIC attracts the most talented students and faculty, offers innovative and creative programming, and remains a world leader in art-anddesign education throughout the 21st century and beyond.

Started five years ago, the first-ever School-only fundraising campaign, closed on June 30, 2018, exceeding its $50 million goal by 10 percent, raising $55.2 million. Through the generosity of more than 2,100 alums, friends, parents, faculty, board members, and staff, Beautiful/Work established more than 30 new endowed scholarship funds to support students and created eight faculty endowments. Nearly 90 Chicago Public Schools students are able to pursue higher education with the help of scholarships and financial assistance. Beautiful/Work continues to support the very people who reimagine our city and the world through their creative talent, entrepreneurial energy, and cultural leadership. n

Inaugural Smith-Buonanno Family Director of Contemporary Practices Dawn Gavin leads SAIC’s first-year program

When Dawn Gavin arrived at SAIC in 2017 as the Smith-Buonanno Family Director of Contemporary Practices, she fired up a red teapot in her office every afternoon and invited faculty from her department to join her for tea and Tunnocks Caramel Wafer biscuits from her hometown of Uddingston, Scotland, just outside of Glasgow. In these unscheduled, informal conversations, Gavin says she learned valuable information that helped her mentor faculty, match team-teaching partners, and get to know the Contemporary Practices department, which offers introductory research and studio classes for firstyear undergraduate students.

As the first Smith-Buonanno Family Director of Contemporary Practices, Gavin’s position is supported by a generous gift from Board of Governors member Linda Smith Buonanno and her husband Vincent Buonanno, whose daughter is an alum of SAIC. The gift helped strengthen the School’s foundation program with this new leadership position. Gavin was the perfect fit. She came to SAIC from Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle where she was chair of Visual Arts and oversaw the Department of Arts and the Foundations Program.

Gavin has always had an affinity for first-year students. “They’re the students who change you the most. There’s that immediacy of what they don’t know they know,” she says. “They come in with the expectation of being changed and altered, so that’s a really dynamic place to be with students.”

Gavin’s service at the School has been exemplary. After her first year, she was appointed interim dean of undergraduate studies for two years. While serving in this temporary role, Gavin retains her directorship and her involvement with SAIC’s first-year students.

“I’m still amazed that in the first week of Contemporary Practices classes, the work displayed in the hallway is just fantastic,” says Gavin. Commenting on the high-quality of work she sees so early in students’ education, she adds, “It feels like people have had their wheels held off the ground. All of a sudden, you drop it, and they take off at speed.” n

SAIC RAISED $620,000 AT BEAUTIFUL/NIGHT AUCTION AND BENEFIT SAIC raised $620,000 at Beautiful/Night, its first faculty and alum art auction and benefit. Proceeds from the auction contributed to the Beautiful/ Work Scholarship Fund as part of Beautiful/Work: The Campaign for SAIC. MARTIN BERGER NAMED SAIC’S DEAN OF FACULTY AND VICE PRESIDENT OF ACADEMIC AFFAIRS Martin Berger joined SAIC on August 1, 2018, as the new dean of faculty and vice president of academic affairs. Berger came to the School from the University of California, Santa Cruz. His academic work has a particular focus on the construction of gender and race, which is well-suited to SAIC’s ongoing diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts described in NEXT: SAIC Strategic Plan.

SAIC ALUMS NAMED FULBRIGHT FELLOWS Six recent alums were awarded 2018 US Fulbright Fellowships—the most ever awarded to SAIC community members in a single year. The 2018 Fulbright Fellows include Mohammad Omar Aziz (BFA 2006), Catalina Bode (BFA 2018), Christalena Hughmanick (MFA 2012), Rosabel Kurth (BFA 2017), Marina Leybishkis (MFA 2017), and William Wiebe (MFA 2018).

INSTITUTE FOR CURATORIAL RESEARCH AND PRACTICE NAMED FACULTY FELLOWS SAIC named Daniel Eisenberg, professor in the Film, Video, New Media, and Animation and Visual and Critical Studies departments, and Ellen Rothenberg, adjunct professor in Fiber and Material Studies, as the inaugural joint faculty research fellows of its Institute for Curatorial Research and Practice.

TREVOR PAGLEN RECEIVED 2017 MACARTHUR “GENIUS” GRANT The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation named artist and alum Trevor Paglen (MFA 2002) as one of its 24 MacArthur Fellows for 2017.

Paglen is a conceptual artist and geographer whose work makes the invisible operations of military and corporate power visible to everyday citizens. The MacArthur Fellowship is a “no strings attached” award in support of people, not projects. Each fellowship comes with a stipend of $625,000 distributed over five years. Paglen is the second member of the SAIC community to receive a “genius” grant. Professor in the School’s Photography department LaToya Ruby Frazier received the honor in 2015.

WASHINGTON CENTER HONORED SAIC WITH 2017 HIGHER EDUCATION CIVIC ENGAGEMENT AWARD SAIC was honored with the 2017 Higher Education Civic Engagement Award from the Washington Center. The School was selected for its leadership and innovation in civic engagement and was presented with the award during the Washington Center’s annual awards luncheon in Washington, DC, at the National Press Club on October 2.

HEED AWARD RECOGNIZED SCHOOL’S COMMITMENT TO DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION For the fourth year in a row, SAIC received the Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award from INSIGHT into Diversity magazine, a national honor recognizing US colleges and universities that demonstrate an outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion. As a recipient, the School was featured in the November 2017 issue of the magazine.

CHRIS BRADLEY WON MEIER ACHIEVEMENT AWARD Chris Bradley (MFA 2010), an alum currently teaching in the School’s Contemporary Practices and Sculpture departments, was one of four recipients of the Meier Achievement Award, a $40,000 cash prize from the Helen Coburn Meier and Tim Meier Charitable Foundation for the Arts given to midcareer artists.

Former scholarship recipients on the impact of giving

When students graduate from SAIC, they leave with more than a diploma. Students who were scholarship recipients often leave with a desire to give back to their communities.

From allowing them to attend one of the most prestigious art schools in the United States to providing travel to places like India, the support that scholarships and fellowships offered to five recent graduates was critical to their success at SAIC and continues to influence their practices. These five alums share how the scholarships they received continue to impact and inspire them.

Describe your current creative or professional practice.

What did receiving a travel fellowship mean to you?

I teach art at the City Colleges of Chicago. Teaching has been wonderful. It always shows you what you don’t know. It doesn’t matter how long you’ve been studying something, to be able to teach it is to know it even better.

What was really wonderful about my experience in India is that it reminded me how familiar it felt for me to be in an unfamiliar place, since I grew up in many different countries. It also reignited the importance of travel as a way to research in my practice.

Describe your current creative or professional practice.

I perform as a drag queen under the name Irregular Girl. Drag is something that I think is a total sum of all the things I learned at SAIC, from performance skills to fibers skills that I acquired making costumes. My work is about my experience as a trans woman, and it’s all about joy and celebration and a comeuppance of what my identity

is as a trans woman. It’s meant to elicit laughter because I think the best way that I found to experience and live through trauma is to laugh at it.

What did receiving a scholarship mean to you?

It’s what allowed me to pursue a career and to prove to myself that art is something worth pursuing.

Describe your current creative or professional practice.

What did receiving a scholarship mean to you?

I work for the Chicago Public Library as a cyber navigator, teaching people digital skills. A lot of it leans toward social work, helping people write emails or job

Education is the one thing that can never be taken away from me. It is the best thing I have ever received.

I’m represented by Rule Gallery in Denver, and I’ll have my first solo show with them in 2019. I’m also working on an artist book about Trinidad and Tobago, where I was born. I recently received a Vermont

Studio Center Fellowship, where I’m hoping to work on the book among other projects.

What did receiving a scholarship mean to you?

I think artists are all self-doubters.

I create work, and I always think it’s never good enough, so I try harder and harder. When you get recognition for work, it’s an affirmation, in a way, to say, “Keep going. Believe in yourself.”

Describe your current creative or professional practice.

What did receiving a fellowship mean to you?

I’ve been focused on developing, uncovering, and proliferating novel solutions to the critical circumstances humans have generated, specifically with the future of plastics and corporate creativity regarding sustainable material technology.

It allowed me to relax and focus.

There was a shared value system that was communicated at SAIC, and I was allowed to expand my work to its full potential. n

PRESIDENT ELISSA TENNY RECOGNIZED AS ONE OF CRAIN’S CHICAGO BUSINESS’ NOTABLE WOMEN IN EDUCATION President Elissa Tenny was recognized as one of “Chicago’s Notable Women in Education 2018” in Crain’s Chicago Business for serving with distinction for decades.

COLUMBUS DRIVE BUILDING RENOVATION COMPLETED Four years ago, SAIC began a modernization of the entire 142,000 squarefoot Columbus Drive Building. Renovations completed in fall 2017 include new educational spaces converted from the School’s former auditorium, restoration of the first-floor stairwell to its original 1976 design, a new atrium traversing the second and third floors, and new and improved energy-efficient lighting and fully modernized HVAC and sprinkler systems.

AMY PLEASANT AND PHILLIP CHEN NAMED 2018 GUGGENHEIM FELLOWS Two alums, Amy Pleasant (BFA 1994) and Phillip Chen (MFA 1979), were named 2018 Guggenheim Fellows by the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. Appointed on the basis of prior achievement and exceptional promise, the successful candidates were chosen from a group of almost 3,000 applicants in the foundation’s 94th competition.

WALTER MASSEY NAMED PRESIDENT EMERITUS At the 2018 Commencement Ceremony, then-Chancellor Walter Massey received his 42nd honorary degree, and Shirley Massey received the Presidential Award of Distinction. In July, Walter Massey was appointed the School’s first president emeritus in honor of his commitment to supporting many of the projects that took root during his presidency.

BERLIN PRIZE 2018 AWARDED TO JESSE BALL Writing Professor Jesse Ball was awarded the Berlin Prize for 2018–19 from the American Academy in Berlin.

SAIC COMMUNITY MEMBERS RECEIVED 3ARTS AWARDS Associate Professor in the Department of Film, Video, New Media, and Animation Tirtza Even and alum Juan-Carlos Perez (BFA 2002) were awarded unrestricted $25,000 grants from 3Arts, a Chicago-based nonprofit advocating for women artists, artists of color, and artists with disabilities.

MAGDALENA MOSKALEWICZ RECEIVED THE 2017 JEAN GOLDMAN BOOK PRIZE Faculty member Magdalena Moskalewicz received the 2017 Jean Goldman Book Prize for her work editing the book, Halka/Haiti 18 48°05”N 72°23’01”W. The annual prize honors an outstanding arts publication by a faculty member and was presented by SAIC President Elissa Tenny and James Rondeau, President and Eloise W. Martin Director of the Art Institute of Chicago.

SAIC’S FACULTY RECEIVE CHICAGO ARTADIA AWARDS Artadia announced Photography Professor Claire Pentecost and Lecturer in the Photography department Rashayla Marie Brown (BFA 2015) as recipients of its 2017 Chicago Artadia Awards, unrestricted, merit-based awards that include $10,000 along with other ongoing benefits.

What does it mean to be a citizen today? This question was at the heart of the US Pavilion’s exhibition at the 2018 Venice Architecture Biennale, one of the most important architectural events in the world. The US State Department selected SAIC and the University of Chicago (UChicago) to commission the exhibition, which highlighted the urgent need for architects and designers to envision citizenship in today’s uncertain landscape. US Pavilion Curators Ann Lui, assistant professor at SAIC; Niall Atkinson, associate professor at UChicago; Mimi Zeiger, an independent critic, editor, curator, and educator; and Associate Curator Iker Gil, lecturer at SAIC, invited architecture and design teams to create seven installations, each exploring a different scale of citizenship. Dimensions of Citizenship and its programs, Citizen Lab and CitizenSHIP, ran through November 2018 and was remounted in Chicago in February 2019.

Jeanne Gang’s (HON 2013) Stone Stories questioned how 500 stones transported from Memphis Landing could become a site of civic memory that represents many citizen voices past and present.

In Ecological Citizens, the landscape architecture firm SCAPE used the Venetian Lagoon as a case study to argue for ecological activism.

Inspired by tactics that African American women used to navigate slavery, Thrival Geographies (In My Mind I See a Line), explored identity and shelter in African American communities.

CHICAGO TORTURE JUSTICE MEMORIAL AWARDED 2017 ROBERT RAUSCHENBERG FOUNDATIONS’ ARTIST AS ACTIVIST FELLOWSHIP Several SAIC community members who are part of the Chicago Torture Justice Memorial (CTJM) cultural collective received the 2017 Artist as Activist fellowship from the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation. Members from the SAIC community include Mary Patten (Film, Video, New Media and Animation, Visual and Critical Studies); and Sarah Ross (Sculpture).

Dear Alums, Parents, and Friends, I am excited to share with you that, as of June 30, 2018, your contributions to Beautiful/Work: The Campaign for SAIC helped us exceed our goal by 10 percent, raising $55.2 million for student scholarships, faculty support, and academic programs.

This past fiscal year (July 1, 2017–June 30, 2018), you and your fellow donors stepped forward in remarkable ways to support the campaign, ensuring that SAIC attracts the most talented students and faculty and continues to offer innovative and creative programming throughout the 21st century and beyond.

I am proud to say that $12.3 million of the contributions came from alums, $23.1 million from board members, $15.8 million from friends of the School, and $4.0 million from parents. Nearly $30 million of the funds raised support student scholarships and fellowships.

Through the magnitude of generosity of more than 2,100 alums, faculty, staff, parents, and friends, Beautiful/Work established more than 30 new endowed scholarship funds to support students. Nearly 90 Chicago Public Schools students are able to pursue higher education with the help of scholarships and financial assistance. Additionally, eight faculty endowments were created to bring today’s leading thinkers and makers to Chicago. All of these gifts make a direct impact on the lives of students and faculty members through the campaign.

By supporting students and faculty, you have ensured that the thinkers and makers who envision a brighter future will shape history and culture for generations to come. Thank you to the donors listed on the following pages for making all of this possible.
