Watch out for investment scams
WHEN you invest, you’ll find that knowledge is power. The more you know about your investment choices, and who is offering them, the better prepared you’ll be to make good decisions. And this diligence can also help protect you against investment scams.
How widespread is this activity? Consider this: Investment fraud losses totaled more than $4.5 billion in 2023, according to the FBI’s Internet Crime Report.
Here are some common types of scams:
• Cryptocurrency – Not all cryptocurrency offers are scams, but many are. The scammers will contact you via social media, claiming they’ve made a lot of money in crypto and are willing to help you do the same. They may direct you to a website or app to invest, but the “company” taking your money may not even exist, and, after taking your money, may disappear.
• Investment programs – These programs claim to have “proven” strategies that can enable you to get rich by investing in financial products. But these strategies are dubious at best and can cost you thousands of dollars that could otherwise go into an investment plan based on your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon.
• Real estate – Typically, a real estate scam tries to get you to invest in a “world-class” or “luxury” property development, but these properties may take years to build, if they’re built at all. Also, various real estate “seminars” claim they can teach you how to get wealthy by buying and selling real estate, but these programs are expensive and usually worthless.
• Gold and other precious metals – Scammers
who call themselves “rare coins” merchants may try to sell you gold coins, bullion or other types of precious metals, claiming that these assets will always go up in value (which isn’t true) and that “now is the best time to act.” You can find legitimate ways to invest in precious metals, possibly through mutual funds, but you’ll need to determine whether these assets can be an appropriate part of your investment portfolio.
So, how can you avoid these scams? Here ae some suggestions from the Federal Trade Commission:
• Don’t be pushed into snap decisions. Scammers will pressure you to act quickly because “space is limited” in an investment offering or a “special deal” won’t last long. If someone won’t give you time to consider an offer, it’s not worth considering.
• Be suspicious of “risk-free” claims. All investments carry risk, and no variable investments can claim to provide “guaranteed returns.” If an individual or organization downplays the risk of an investment and doesn’t want to provide risk disclosures, just walk away.
• Ask about licensing or registration. Legitimate investment professionals must be registered with the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) and be licensed by your state’s securities regulator before they can sell you any investment product. You can check the status of an individual or firm by using FINRA’s BrokerCheck tool at brokercheck.fina.org.
• Do some research. You can search
online for the name of the company or individual offering you an investment opportunity. By entering terms such as “review,” “scam,” “fraud” or “complaint,” you may well find that other people have experienced problems or been victimized.
To achieve your financial goals, you’ll likely need to invest for decades — so, be wary of scammers who claim to offer a shortcut to success.

Directions to Ventana Canyon Trailhead:

o Follow Ventana Canyon Rd for about 1 mile until you reach the entrance to the Ventana Canyon Resort.

SEPTEMBER 2024
Here are some highlighted celestial events and objects to observe in the night sky during September 2024:
• September 3 - New Moon. The Moon will be located on the same side of the Earth as the Sun and will not be visible in the night sky. This phase occurs at 01:57 UTC. This is the best time of the month to observe faint objects such as galaxies and star clusters because there is no moonlight to interfere.
• September 5 - Mercury at Greatest Western Elongation. The planet Mercury reaches greatest western elongation of 18.1 degrees from the Sun. This is the best time to view Mercury since it will be at its highest point above the horizon in the morning sky. Look for the planet low in the eastern sky just before sunrise.
• September 8 - Saturn at Opposition. The ringed planet will be at its closest approach to Earth and its face will be fully
Trail Directions:
1. Starting the Hike:
o Begin at the Ventana Canyon Trailhead, which is well-marked. The trail starts on the left side of the road, near the parking area.
2. Follow the Trail:
o The trail initially follows a dirt path and gradually ascends into Ventana Canyon. As you hike, you'll be surrounded by lush desert vegetation and views of the canyon walls.
3. Reach the Maiden Pools:
o After about 2 miles, you'll reach the Maiden Pools, which are small but picturesque pools of water. This is a popular spot for a break or to turn around. The pools are most impressive after recent rainfall.
4. Optional Extension - Continue to The Window:
o For a more strenuous hike, continue past the Maiden Pools to "The Window," a large rock formation at the top of the ridge. This adds significant distance and elevation to the hike (approximately 12 miles round trip).
5. Return the Same Way:
o Retrace your steps back to the trailhead to complete the hike.
Tips for a Safe and Enjoyable Hike:
• Water: Bring plenty of water, as there are no water sources along the trail.
• Sun Protection: Wear sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses, as much of the trail is exposed to the sun.
• Footwear: Wear sturdy hiking shoes, as the trail can be rocky and uneven in places.
• Timing: Start early in the day to avoid the heat, especially in the summer.
• Wildlife: Keep an eye out for desert wildlife, including birds, lizards, and possibly even bighorn sheep in the upper elevations.
The Ventana Canyon Trail offers a rewarding experience with beautiful views and a sense of adventure, making it one of Tucson’s favorite hikes!
illuminated by the Sun. It will be brighter than any other time of the year and will be visible all night long. This is the best time to view and photograph Saturn and its moons. A mediumsized or larger telescope will allow you to see Saturn's rings and a few of its brightest moons.
• September 18 - Full Moon, Supermoon. The Moon will be located on the opposite side of the Earth as the Sun and its face will be fully illuminated. This phase occurs at 02:36 UTC. This full moon was known by early Native American tribes as the Corn Moon because the corn is harvested around this time of year. This moon is also known as the Harvest Moon. The Harvest Moon is the full moon that occurs closest to the September equinox each year. This is also the first of three supermoons for 2024. The Moon will be near its closest approach to the Earth and may look slightly larger and brighter than usual.

5. Tea Tree Oil (Optional):
o Antibacterial: Tea tree oil is known for its potent antibacterial properties, making it a great addition for acne-prone skin.
