Some ‘did-you-knows’ about estate plans

IF you’ve done any estate planning, or even if you’re just familiar with it, you probably know the basics — that is, a comprehensive estate plan can help you pass on assets to your family while also achieving other goals, such as designating someone to take care of your affairs if you become unable to do so. But you may not know about some other estate-planning issues that could prove important in your life:

• Power of attorney for students – Children heading off to college may be considered legal adults in many states. Consequently, you, as a parent, may not have any control over medical treatment if your child faces a sudden, serious illness or is involved in an accident. Instead, a doctor who doesn’t know your child or your family may decide on a course of action of which you might not approve. To help prevent this, you may want to have your college student sign a medical power of attorney form, which will allow you to make decisions on your child’s behalf if doctors don’t think your child can make those choices. You might also want to combine the medical power of attorney with an advance health care directive or living will, which lets you specify actions you do or don’t want to happen. In any case, consult with your legal advisor before taking any of these steps.

• Community property versus common law –Not all states treat married couples’ possessions equally. If you live in a community property state, the property you acquire during your marriage is generally considered to be owned in equal halves by each spouse, with some

exceptions. But if you live in a common law state, the property you obtain while you’re married is not automatically owned by both spouses. In these states, if you buy some property, you own it, unless you decide to put it in the name of yourself and your spouse.

This doesn’t necessarily mean, however, that your spouse has no rights, because common law states typically have rules that guard surviving spouses from being disinherited. But here’s the key point: If you move from a community property state to a common law state, or vice versa, you might not want to assume that your and your spouse’s property ownership situations will remain the same. Consequently, if you do move, you may want to consult an estateplanning attorney in your new state to determine where you stand.

• Pet trusts – You always strive to take good care of your pets. But what might happen to them if you become incapacitated in some way? Unless you have a close family member or friend who’s willing to take over care for your pet, you might want to consider setting up a pet trust, which can take effect either during your lifetime or after you pass away. A trustee typically will make payments to the caregiver you’ve designated for your pet, with payments continuing for the pet’s lifetime or a set number of years. Again, an estateplanning attorney can help you with

this arrangement.

Estate planning certainly involves the bigpicture issue of leaving a legacy to the next generation. But the issues we’ve discussed can also be meaningful to you, so you’ll want to address them properly. 

ALAMO CANYON BATHTUB TANK LOOP

Type: Day Hike | Distance: 3.2 miles | Route: Loop | Difficulty: Easy

This is a very popular trail for hikers, runners and walkers. You will definitely not be alone out here. This is probably one of the best times to visit the trails. It is spring and the desert is blooming. There are several creeks, and with the snow melting from the higher elevation there is a good chance you will see some water flow.

Although the weather is just beautiful out, some of our desert friends have woken up from a long winter's nap. Alway be aware of your surroundings. Be sure to take plenty of water and maybe even a snack and enjoy the beautiful Arizona Desert.

This trail is not listed on the park map but it starts at the same trailhead as Romero Ruins. It was a great hike up to the canyon and waterfall. It is a great trail for wildflower viewing in early spring. Once past the falls there are several other paths and it’s easy to make a wrong turn. Once you’ve made the descent with a mile to go the trail is easy to follow.

Driving directions:

Head North on Campbell. Take a Left on River Dr. Take a Right on Oracle Rd. Turn Right into Catalina State Park. The parking is the second pull thru on the left, the trail starts across the road.

• April 6 - Full Moon. The Moon will be located on the opposite side of the Earth as the Sun and its face will be fully illuminated. This phase occurs at 04:37 UTC. This full moon was known by early Native American tribes as the Pink Moon because it marked the appearance of the moss pink, or wild ground phlox, which is one of the first spring flowers. This moon has also been known as the Sprouting Grass Moon, the Growing Moon, and the Egg Moon. Many coastal tribes called it the Fish Moon because this was the time that the shad swam upstream to spawn.

• April 11 - Mercury at Greatest Eastern Elongation. The planet Mercury reaches greatest eastern elongation of 19.5 degrees from the Sun. This is the best time to view Mercury since it will be at its highest point above the horizon in the evening sky. Look for the planet low in the western sky just after sunset.

• April 20 - New Moon. The Moon will be located on the same side of the Earth as the Sun and will not be visible in the night sky. This phase occurs at 04:15 UTC. This is the best time of the month to observe faint objects such as galaxies and star

clusters because there is no moonlight to interfere.

• April 20 - Hybrid Solar Eclipse. A hybrid solar eclipse occurs when the Moon is almost too close to the Earth to completely block the Sun. This type of eclipse will appear as a total eclipse to some parts of the world and will appear annular to others. The eclipse path will begin in the southern Indian Ocean and move across parts of western Australia and southern Indonesia.

• April 22, 23 - Lyrids Meteor Shower. The Lyrids is an average shower, usually producing about 20 meteors per hour at its peak. It is produced by dust particles left behind by comet C/1861 G1 Thatcher, which was discovered in 1861. The shower runs annually from April 16-25. It peaks this year on the night of the night of the 22nd and morning of the 23rd. These meteors can sometimes produce bright dust trails that last for several seconds. The thin crescent moon will set early in the evening leaving dark skies for what should be an excellent show. Best viewing will be from a dark location after midnight. Meteors will radiate from the constellation Lyra, but can appear anywhere in the sky.

Mask

If you are a Native to Southern Arizona this is a must try mask. Hot, dry climates can be very unforgiving on the skin. Olive oil naturally keeps skin hydrated and softens the skin. Avocado is also great at helping the skin stay hydrated and is great for sensitive skin to calm inflammation. Mango boosts collagen production on the skin, helps to restore skin elasticity and also helps prevent wrinkle formation. Honey naturally moisturizes and hydrates the skin.

Ingredients:

2 tbsp Honey

2 tbsp Avocado

2 tbsp Olive Oil

1 mashed Mango

Directions: Mix all of the ingredients in a bowl. Apply to the face. Leave the mask on for 15-20 minutes. Rinse with cool water and pat dry.

The Tradition of Easter Bread

Many holiday breads are meant to celebrate the end of a fast, to symbolize an offering, or to invite good luck for the year ahead. In other contexts, breads aren’t symbolic as much as traditional, baked as a reminder of family and togetherness and celebration.

Easter and Good Friday inspire a particularly rich array of festive breads to honor the occasion. Colomba di Pasqua originated somewhere in the Lombardy region of Italy. It’s an enriched bread with a sugar-nut syrup coating served on Easter. The loaves are shaped like a dove to symbolize peace. In Russia, many families eat kulich on Easter. It’s a tall, narrow, enriched bread made with candied citrus peel, almonds, and saffron. The top is traditionally inscribed with symbols meaning “Christ is risen.” Tsoureki is a Greek Easter bread that’s often braided and sprinkled with nuts. It’s served with Easter eggs dyed red to symbolize the blood of Christ. Croatians celebrate Easter with a cake-like sweet bread called pinca or sirnica that is enriched with

butter and eggs. The loaf can be shaped into a round and decorated with a cross or braided and formed into a wreath.

In Great Britain, sweet currant-filled buns decorated with a cross—and aptly named hot cross buns—are traditionally prepared for Good Friday. The custom dates back at least to the Middle Ages, and some still insist that baking hot cross buns on Good Friday will protect a home from all sorts of calamities

during the upcoming year, including fire and bad luck. During the 1500s, when a law prohibited the sale of hot cross buns except on Good Friday, Christmas, and for burials, people made hot cross buns at home to get by.

Portuguese Sweet Bread has traveled the globe; it has taken hold where larger populations of Portuguese immigrants settled, including Hawaii and New England. Called folar in Portuguese, and it is traditionally made during Easter. There is a savory variation called folar de Chaves, which is stuffed with ham, linguiça, and salpicão.

These loaves are just a sample of some of the rich bread traditions associated with Easter. When it comes to the holidays, bread has played an important role in holiday meals across many different cultures and traditions. Modernist Bread includes a number of recipes for different traditional holiday breads, including Colomba di Pasqua as well as Portuguese Sweet Bread.
