Avoid becoming ‘burden’ on grown children

HERE’S an interesting statistic: Some 72% of retirees say one of their biggest fears is becoming a burden on their families, according to a 2021 survey by Age Wave and Edward Jones. Both before and during retirement, what steps can you take to avoid burdening your loved ones in the future?

Here are a few suggestions:

• Build your retirement savings. The greater your financial resources, the less likely it becomes that you’d ever have to count on your grown children for financial support. You may have access to a 401(k) or similar retirement plan at work, so take advantage of it. Even with an employer-sponsored plan, you also may be eligible to contribute to an IRA. In addition to offering a variety of investment options, a 401(k) and IRA provide potential tax advantages. And once you do retire, be careful about how much you withdraw each year from your retirement plans and other investments.

• Plan for health care costs. Once you are retired, health care costs will be a significant expense. You may have Medicare, but you'll also want to consider your need for supplemental health insurance to cover traditional medical costs. And you’ll want to consider another potential healthrelated expense: long-term care. You may never need the services of a home health aide or a stay in a nursing home, but no one can predict the future.

Medicare does not cover most costs for longterm care, which can be quite high. In 2021, the annual national median cost for a private room in a nursing home was over $108,000, while the

median cost for a full-time home health aide was nearly $62,000, according to a survey by Genworth, an insurance company. You may want to consult with a financial professional on strategies for protecting yourself from these costs.

• Create necessary legal documents. If something were to happen to you, and you didn’t have the appropriate legal documents in place, your loved ones could be placed in a bind, both financially and emotionally. That’s why it’s a good idea to create documents such as a durable financial power of attorney, which lets you name someone to manage your finances if you became incapacitated, and a durable power of attorney for health care, which allows someone to make medical decisions on your behalf if you can’t make them yourself. You’ll want to work with a legal professional to develop the documents appropriate for your needs.

• Evaluate your housing needs. As you enter retirement, you may want to evaluate your living situation. Could you downsize to a smaller home, or perhaps a condominium or apartment? Not only might you save money with such a move, but you could also end up relieving your grown children of the responsibilities and hassles involved in clearing out and selling your home should you become unable to do so yourself during the later years of your retirement.

By taking these measures, along with

others, you can go a long way toward maintaining your independence and putting yourself in a place where you won’t burden your grown children. And that’s a good place to be. 

Meritage Homes and Operation Homefront Welcome Veteran Family to a Mortgage-Free Home in Rancho Sahuarita

ON Friday, October 28th, 2022, team members of Meritage Homes and Operation Homefront, joined by local officials and community representatives, came together to recognize a deserving military family, and awarded them the keys to a brand new, energy-efficient mortgage-free Meritage Home in Rancho Sahuarita.

Army Sgt. Charles Haney and his family received the keys to their new house, located in the Enclave at Entrada Del Rio neighborhood by Meritage Homes. An official key ceremony was held to welcome the family home, and included special remarks from Phillippe Lord, Chief Executive Officer, Meritage Homes; Andre Hawkins, Chief Financial Officer, Operation Homefront; Jeff Grobstein, Meritage Division President; Elliot Mann, Meritage West Region President; Mayor Tom Murphy of Sahuarita and Jeremy Sharpe, Managing Partner of Rancho Sahuarita.

Army Sgt. Charles Haney medically retired from the military in 2009 after five years of service, including a deployment to Iraq. The Haney family were given the keys to a nearly 2,400 square-foot, four-bedroom home located in Entrada Del Rio.

Haney shared: “I’m proud to have served in the military. It’s wonderful to see organizations like Operation Homefront and builders like Meritage recognizing veterans and their families. This home means so much to me and my family. It will help ensure my children have the opportunity at a better life and brighter future.”

According to Meritage Homes, this is the ninth year that the homebuilder has built and donated a new home to Operation Homefront’s Permanent Homes for Veterans (PHV) program. Through this program, Operation Homefront has placed more than 700 deserving military families in mortgage-free homes.

“We are so excited to welcome the Haney

family to the Rancho Sahuarita community. Rancho Sahuarita was founded on the vision of being a place for families to create a better life, and we are so thrilled that we can welcome such a deserving family to our community, and hope they will be able to do just that,” said Jeremy Sharpe, Managing Partner of Rancho Sahuarita.

Tom Murphy, Mayor of Sahuarita also commented: “Being a veteran myself, it is such an honor to have Sgt. Haney and his family join our community, and makes it extra special. We are so grateful for their service, and it is a privilege to be able to welcome them home.”

Distance: 3.6 miles | Elevation gain: 666 ft | Route: Loop | Time: 1 hour and 44 minutes

This is the month that the leaves shall begin changing for the beautiful fall season. This is an easy hike to enjoy with or without children. The Bear Wallow Trail is a popular hiking trail, and although it only takes about 2 hours to complete, you can take your time and make the most of your environment. What more can you ask for with cooler weather and beautiful scenery? You can bring along your furry friends too, but they need to remain on a leash.

Directions: From Tucson, take I-10 east 81 miles. Turn right (south) on AZ 186 and continue for 23 miles. Turn left (east) on AZ 181 toward Chiricahua National Monument, drive 4 miles, then turn right (south) on FR 42. Continue up Pinery Canyon 12 miles to FR 42D. Drive about 2.5 miles to the Rustler Park Campground. Access these trails via the Crest Trail about 2.5 miles from the campground. See Crest Trail #270 (Barfoot Lookout to Wilderness Boundary) narrative. Forest Roads 42 and 42D are gravel roads suitable for passenger vehicles. Open from April through November, they are not plowed and are usually closed following early or late season snowstorms. These roads are rough and dusty and may be muddy and slick after a rain.

NOVEMBER

• November 4, 5 - Taurids Meteor Shower. The Taurids is a long-running minor meteor shower producing only about 5-10 meteors per hour. It is unusual in that it consists of two separate streams. The first is produced by dust grains left behind by Asteroid 2004 TG10. The second stream is produced by debris left behind by Comet 2P Encke. The shower runs annually from September 7 to December 10. It peaks this year on the night of November 4. This year the nearly full moon will block out all but the brightest meteors. But if you are patient, you may still be able to catch a few good ones. Best viewing will be just after midnight from a dark location far away from city lights. Meteors will radiate from the constellation Taurus, but can appear anywhere in the sky.

• November 8 - Full Moon. The Moon will be located on the opposite side of the Earth as the Sun and its face will be fully illuminated. This phase occurs at 11:03 UTC. This full moon was known by early Native American tribes as the Beaver Moon because this was the time of year to set the beaver traps before the swamps and rivers froze. It has also been known as the Frosty Moon and the Dark Moon.

• November 8 - Total Lunar Eclipse. A total lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes completely through the Earth's dark shadow, or umbra. During this type of eclipse, the Moon will gradually get darker and then take on a rusty or blood red

color. The eclipse will be visible throughout eastern Russia, Japan, Australia, the Pacific Ocean, and parts of western and central North America.

• November 9 - Uranus at Opposition. The blue-green planet will be at its closest approach to Earth and its face will be fully illuminated by the Sun. It will be brighter than any other time of the year and will be visible all night long. This is the best time to view Uranus. Due to its distance, it will only appear as a tiny blue-green dot in all but the most powerful telescopes.

• November 17, 18 - Leonids Meteor Shower. The Leonids is an average shower, producing an average of up to 15 meteors per hour at its peak. This shower is unique in that it has a cyclonic peak about every 33 years where hundreds of meteors per hour can be seen. That last of these occurred in 2001. The Leonids is produced by dust grains left behind by comet Tempel-Tuttle, which was discovered in 1865. The shower runs annually from November 6-30. It peaks this year on the night of the 17th and morning of the 18th. The second quarter moon will block many of the fainter meteors this year. But the Leonids can be unpredictable so there is still potential for a good show. Best viewing will be from a dark location after midnight. Meteors will radiate from the constellation Leo, but can appear anywhere in the sky.

DIY FACIAL CARE

Sun spots and age spots are one of the most annoying signs of aging. Anyone else regretting their time in the sun this summer?

It’s never too late to get serious about wearing sunscreen, and you can also take steps to reduce hyperpigmentation and reverse the signs of sun damage on your face. The perfect pampering ingredient? Pumpkin.

Pumpkin is an excellent exfoliator. Its fruit enzymes and alpha-hydroxy acids [source] slough off the dead skin that leads to a dull complexion, leaving you with a brighter, glowing complexion.

Pumpkin is rich in vitamin A, the anti-aging ingredient you’ll find in retinol products [source]. That makes pumpkin perfect for a face mask that lightens age spots and evens out skin tone.

You’ll also get a dose of vitamin C and beta-carotene with pumpkin, both of which support collagen production to improve skin tone and texture.

INGREDIENTS:

2 tablespoons pumpkin puree

1 teaspoon white sugar

1 teaspoon lemon juice

DIRECTIONS:

Mix ingredients in a small bowl. Apply an even layer to clean skin. Let it sit for 10 minutes. Then using your fingers, massage the mask into the skin using small circular motions. Rinse with warm water and pat dry. Use once a week.

National Pickle Day

NOVEMBER 14, 2022

Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers. A peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked. If Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers, Where's the peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked?

National Pickle Day is on November 14 and it was created to celebrate the pickle as one of the worlds favorite fermented foods. Pickles prove to be preposterously popular with people across the country; the number of pickle-eaters is projected to generate to more than 250 million by 2023. That gives plenty of pretext to position November 14th as prime pickle time!

HISTORY OF NATIONAL PICKLE DAY

The practice of pickling has existed for thousands of years. The process ensured a degree of preservation otherwise impossible in pre-modern conditions and was essential in providing a mobile supply of provisions for travelers as well as a dependable source of nutrition for those living through barren winters. While a diverse set of foods can be pickled, the cucumber emerges as the dominant food that most associate with the idea of both pickling and the word “pickle” itself. Archaeologists believe that the first evidence of pickled cucumbers originates from Tigris river valley civilizations, and the nutritional benefits of the food would go on to be lauded by such historical figures as Cleopatra and Julius Caesar.

With all their popularity in the Old World, pickles would not make their

appearance in North America until 1492. As you may have guessed by the year, the one responsible for their introduction was none other than Christopher Columbus. Pickles were included in sailors’ rations on his expeditions as a means by which to prevent the onset of scurvy. By the mid-17th century, cucumbers bought from Dutch settlers farming in the New York area were pickled and distributed throughout the region. This would lay the foundations for the territory to be the perfect site for the introduction of the kosher dill pickle.

In the period of the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, a large number of Eastern European Jews immigrated to the United States and settled in the New York City area. They brought with them the unique methods that produce kosher dill pickles, and these early iterations of pickles would develop into the now-famous and ever-familiar food available in grocery stores throughout the United States.

Arizona Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AZOMS) to Open in Rancho Sahuarita

ARIZONA Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AZOMS) is proud to announce expansion into the Rancho Sahuarita community. AZOMS is the longest standing oral and maxillofacial surgery practice in Southern Arizona and has been serving the greater Tucson community since 1971. AZOMS is pleased to provide oral surgical care to patients requiring a variety of oral health care needs. AZOMS doctors are board-certified specialists, who provide services such as dental implants, bone grafting, wisdom teeth removal, facial trauma repair, jaw surgery, comprehensive anesthesia services, among other surgical procedures as experts in face, mouth and jaw surgery.

Many people wonder, “What is the difference between my general dentist and a dental specialist such as an oral surgeon?” Oral and maxillofacial surgeons go through an additional 4-6 years of additional surgical training in a hospital-based residency, beyond the 4 years of dental school that a general dentist completes. During this training, oral and maxillofacial surgeons receive training in a broad scope of surgery, including training in trauma, facial cosmetic procedures, complex facial surgical reconstruction, and extensive dental implant and wisdom tooth extraction training. In addition, oral and maxillofacial surgeons receive extensive training in the safe delivery of general anesthesia.

AZOMS’ surgeons, Dr. Nicholas Coles, Dr. Negin Saghafi, Dr. Robert Wood, and Dr. Jerome Holbrook, have several decades of combined experience. The doctors pride themselves on staying current with the latest technological advances in a rapidly evolving specialty. AZOMS has continued to be leaders in the local dental community, providing continuing education to our dental colleagues, and headlining the Tucson Dental Implant Academy, to enhance the education and quality of dental care within the Tucson dental community.

“Same day dental implants” have become a standard procedure at AZOMS. Patient’s come to them with a tooth or teeth that need to be replaced, and quite often dental implants can be placed the same day. This can be as few as one tooth that needs to be replaced, or can be a full set of teeth to be replaced, many times in a single surgical appointment! As dental specialists, the doctors at AZOMS work with your general dentist, to be your dentist’s specialist for any specialized surgical procedures you may need. Each of their offices are equipped with the most advanced technological equipment, including 3D cone beam CT scanners, and intraoral digital scanners.

AZOMS also has a rich history of giving back to the communities which they serve. For each of the past 7 years, AZOMS has provided its annual “second chance” program to provide a full arch dental implant replacement for

individuals who could not otherwise afford such a procedure. AZOMS also provides its “wisdom for wisdom” program to provide prospective college students with free wisdom teeth extractions in order to offset the everincreasing costs of education.

Dr. Coles spoke of programs such as these saying: “We feel it is important to give back to the communities we serve, and we are proud to offer these and other programs to the Southern Arizona communities we serve.”

He also shared about their upcoming opening, inviting area residents to their Community Open House at the new office (located at 16045 S. Rancho Sahuarita Blvd.) on Thursday, November 17th, 2022 from 2:30 – 7:30 p.m. The event is open to the public.
