Sahuarita Food Bank & Community Resource Center: Nourishing the Community

This February, the Sahuarita Food Bank & Community Resource Center (SFB-CRC) moved into its new home, just over a year after breaking ground. The project was completed after years of preparation, fundraising, and community support, and now provides them a crucial new space out of which to serve even more families in need.

The Community Resource Center’s mission is to provide support to strengthen families, health/nutrition programs, and many workshops and training programs to help people learn new job skills and get employment; with the ultimate goal being economic and family well-being. Founded in 2009, the Sahuarita Food Bank served over 10,000 individuals last year, with over 50,000 visits. Food Bank visitors received over 1,300,000 pounds of food.

Thanks to the opening of its new space, the team is able to also provide area families resources for family support, health/nutrition, and workforce development programs. For more information about the classes offered, visit https://www.sahuaritafoodbank.org/ book-online.

Board President Penny Pestle shared: “We have been incredibly fortunate to have the support of so many in the greater Sahuarita and Green Valley area.” She shared how local volunteers and donors continue to be so generous with their time, their contributions, and as continuing sources of food donations.

Over the last year thanks to the support of the community, the Sahuarita Food Bank was also able to work with the team at Rancho Sahuarita on Neighbor-to-Neighbor Sahuarita. As part of the program, each participating household collects one or two non-perishable food items as part of their weekly shopping trip and saves them for regular Saturday collection events. The food bank then picks up the food for distribution to their visitors.

Pestle continued: “The community of Rancho Sahuarita has partnered with us on this important program that has engaged residents in donating non-perishable food on specially-scheduled Saturdays. Lora Nastase has a team of Rancho Sahuarita residents who have helped organize this program, along with Kelly Kyper and Sigi Sanchez from Rancho Sahuarita. We are very grateful to them!”

“This commitment to feed those who struggle to have enough to eat makes a real difference. Thank you to all who have participated.” To find out more information about Neighbor-to-Neighbor Sahuarita or how to get involved, residents can reach out to the organizers for more details at 520-207-7730. 
