West Point, 1830. In the early hours of a gray winter morning, a cadet is found dead. But after the body arrives at the morgue, tragedy becomes savagery when it’s discovered that the young man’s heart has been skillfully removed. Fearing irreparable damage to the fledgling military academy, its leaders turn to a local detective, Augustus Landor (Christian Bale), to solve the murder. Stymied by the cadets’ code of silence, Landor enlists the help of one of their own to pursue the case, an eccentric cadet with a disdain for the rigors of the military and a penchant for poetry — a young man named Edgar Allan Poe (Harry Melling).

Are you ready to ‘unretire’?

HAVE you recently retired but are now thinking of going back to work?

If so, you aren’t alone, as many people are choosing to “unretire.” But if you do reenter the workforce in some capacity, what opportunities might be available to you? And how will your renewed employment affect your financial outlook?

For starters, though, what reasons might motivate you to go back to work? For many people, the primary cause has been inflation, which has presented a huge challenge to retirees living on a fixed income. In addition, the volatile financial market of 2022 caused many people’s investment portfolios to decline in value — a real problem for retirees who needed to start selling investments to supplement their income.

But non-financial factors could also be driving you to unretire. Like other retirees, you may miss the chance to use your work experience to engage with the world, and you may miss the social interactions as well.

In any case, if you do decide to rejoin the working world in some fashion, you may have several options. For example, if you enjoyed the work you did for your former employer, you might want to see if you could go back on a part-time basis. Or you could use your skills to join the “gig” economy by doing some consulting or freelance work in your former industry. You might also consider going to work for a nonprofit organization, as many of these groups lost employees during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic and are now facing labor shortages.

Going back to work, even part time, can improve your cash flow, which helps cover

the cost of regular expenses. Furthermore, the added income can possibly help you delay or reduce withdrawals from your investment accounts. And it’s important to increase the longevity of these accounts considering you may spend two, or even three, decades in retirement. (Once you turn 72, however, you will have to start withdrawing certain amounts from your 401(k) and traditional IRA.) But your earnings can affect another source of your retirement income — your Social Security benefits.

If you return to work before your “full” retirement age, which is likely between 66 and 67, the Social Security earnings limit in 2023 is $21,240. For each $2 earned over that amount, Social Security will deduct $1 from benefits. If you reach your full retirement age in 2023, the earnings limit is $56,520; Social Security will deduct $1 from your benefits for each $3 earned over this amount until the month you turn your full retirement age. But in all future years after you’ve reached your full retirement age, you can earn as much as you want without losing any benefits. Social Security will then recalculate your payments to give you credit for the months your benefits were reduced or withheld due to your excess earnings. Be aware, though, that your earned income can

potentially result in higher taxes on your Social Security benefits at any age.

Returning to work can be rewarding, both financially and emotionally. And you may get more out of the experience when you’re aware of the issues involved. 

WINTER HIKE

LA MILAGROSA AND AGUA CALIENTE CANYON TRAIL LOOP

Length- 6.1 mile loop | Elevation gain- 1,215 ft | Difficulty- Moderate Milagrosa is translated to “the miraculous” in spanish. Which is actually a perfect description for this canyon. The most common route to take is the 6-mile loop that crosses both La Milagrosa and Agua Caliente Canyon. To complete the loop hikers must ascend two ridges. But don’t get discouraged about the ridges, you will not be disappointed at the views. There are often pools of water that can be found throughout the boulder washes. If you feel up to it, try to enjoy this hike near sunset. The colors off the rocks are amazing. Even hiking in the cooler weather here in Southern Arizona, always hike prepared. Have water, a snack and wear proper footwear.

Directions:

From Tucson, follow Speedway Boulevard east then turn left on Wilmot Road. After 0.5 miles it turns into Tanque Verde Road. Continue another 1.7 miles then turn left on Catalina Highway. Follow it for 3.7 miles then turn right on Snyder Road. Follow it for 1.3 miles then follow Avenida De Suzenu to its intersection with Horsehead Road. Park on the side of the road and look for the gate.

JANUARY

• January 3, 4 - Quadrantids Meteor Shower. The Quadrantids is an above average shower, with up to 40 meteors per hour at its peak. It is thought to be produced by dust grains left behind by an extinct comet known as 2003 EH1, which was discovered in 2003. The shower runs annually from January 1-5. It peaks this year on the night of the 3rd and morning of the 4th. This year the nearly full moon will block out most of the fainter meteors. But if you are patient you may still be able to catch a few good ones. Best viewing will be from a dark location after midnight. Meteors will radiate from the constellation Bootes, but can appear anywhere in the sky.

• January 6 - Full Moon. The Moon will be located on the opposite side of the Earth as the Sun and its face will be fully illuminated. This phase occurs at 23:09 UTC. This full moon was known by early Native American tribes as the Wolf Moon

because this was the time of year when hungry wolf packs howled outside their camps. This moon has also been known as the Old Moon and the Moon After Yule.

• January 21 - New Moon. The Moon will be located on the same side of the Earth as the Sun and will not be visible in the night sky. This phase occurs at 20:55 UTC. This is the best time of the month to observe faint objects such as galaxies and star clusters because there is no moonlight to interfere.

• January 30 - Mercury at Greatest Western Elongation. The planet Mercury reaches greatest western elongation of 25 degrees from the Sun. This is the best time to view Mercury since it will be at its highest point above the horizon in the morning sky. Look for the planet low in the eastern sky just before sunrise.

THE SEASON OF GIVING

Residents of Sahuarita Give Back to Those in Need

The holiday season is one filled with the spirit of giving, and is filled with plenty of opportunities to help others. Residents of Sahuarita take advantage of those opportunities in a big way each year, giving of their time, resources and talents to help those in need in a variety of ways.

In Rancho Sahuarita, residents had the opportunity all season long and at a special “Brunch with Santa” event to donate toys benefitting Toys of Tots. The generosity of the residents resulted the donation of over 100 new toys, which will be distributed to children throughout Southern Arizona. At the community’s Holiday Spectacular event, those in attendance were asked to bring donations of non-perishable food items for the Sahuarita

Food Bank, and over 127 pounds of food was collected from this event alone.

Residents in Rancho Resort are also very generous each year, through their efforts for various drives and resident clubs. This year alone, at the community’s December Drive for the Sahuarita Food Bank, an incredible $7600 in monetary donations was collected.

One of the resident clubs, the Sassy Sewers, also made and donated 6 premature baby crocheted outfits, 4 crocheted baby blankets, 12 quilts (adult and child sized), and 14 baby

and toddler sized blankets to the Ronald McDonald House. The Vets Club at Rancho Resort also organized a collection for Toys for Tots throughout the month of December.

Other collections and drives throughout Sahuarita gave area residents the opportunity to give back, at local businesses and at churches and other organizations throughout town. With so many opportunities to get involved and to help those in need, it is easy to see why residents of Sahuarita embrace this season of giving each year.

The Polar Bear Plunge

HAVE YOU CONSIDERED TAKING THE PLUNGE?

What is the plunge you ask? Well the Polar Bear Plunge originally started as the Polar Bear Swim. It was in 1920, a Greek immigrant to Canada named Peter Pantages would swim the English Bay year round. On January 1, 1920, Pantages encouraged a few of his buddies to take a dip in the frigid Vancouver waters with him. The group became known as the Polar Bear Swim Club. The Polar Bear Swim club has been active since 1920 and they would typically have 1,000 to 2,000 registered participants. There was a record 2,128 people who plunged into English Bay in 2000. It’s even estimated that 10,000 people come to observe. Pantages died in 1971, however the tradition he began on New Year’s Day lives on. The Polar Bear Plunge caught on with thousands around the world.

Although Pantages’ club became world wide, it has become more than just a day to jump in freezing cold water. In Canada the Polar Bear Plunge is held on New Year’s Day to celebrate the New Year. In the United States, the Plunges are held to raise money for charitable organizations at different times throughout the year. There are many states that host plunges, such as; Seattle, Colorado, New York, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Minnesota and Maryland.

The Polar Bear Plunge event in Maryland, is the largest plunge held in the United States. It is held annually at Sandy Point State Park, and money is raised for the Special Olympics. It is sponsored by the Maryland State Police. In 2007, their “Plungapalooza” raised $2.2 million dollars and had 7,400 participants. In 2008, they had 12,000 participants.

In 1998, Long Beach, New York began hosting a plunge on Super Bowl Sunday to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Since 1960, in the Netherlands every New Year’s Day about 10,000 people have dived into the icy cold sea water at Scheveningen, a Dutch beach resort town. There are 89 locations on beaches and in lakes for the nearly 30,000 participants to partake in the “Nieuwjaarsduik” (New Year’s Dive). In 1998, Unox, a Unilever food brand often associated with winter, adopted the Nieuwjaarduik and it is the tradition of the participants to wear Unox branded winter caps and gloves.

What would it take for you to participate in a Polar Plunge?
