Are you afraid of outliving your money?

Do you worry about running out of money during your retirement years? If so, how can you help prevent this from happening?

In the first place, if you have this type of fear, you’re far from alone. Consider this: 58% of retirement savers from all age groups, including current retirees, say that outliving their assets is their greatest retirement fear, according to a study by Cerulli Associates, a financial services research organization.

This type of fear can certainly affect your quality of life when you retire. Still, there’s no need to panic – because you can take steps to help prevent the running-out-of-money scenario.

Here are a few to consider:

• Know how much you’ll need during retirement. You need to get a clear picture, or at least as good an estimate as possible, of how much money you’ll need to support your retirement lifestyle. Once you do retire, some costs, such as transportation or other work-related expenses, might go down, while others – medical expenses, in particular – will likely go up. The fear of running out of money, like many fears, is caused largely by what you don’t know, so having a good sense of how much you’ll need in retirement can help reduce your anxieties.

• Build financial resources before retirement. You’re probably at your peak earning capacity in the years close to your retirement, so consider contributing as much as you can afford to your IRA and 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan.

• Maximize your Social Security payments. You can start collecting Social Security as early as 62, but your monthly benefits will be larger if you can afford to wait until your full retirement age,

• Re-enter the workforce. Going back to work in some capacity is one way to possibly help build retirement resources and delay taking Social Security. If you have a particular area of expertise, and you enjoyed the work you did, you might be able to go back to it on a part-time basis or do some consulting. You could boost your cash flow, and potentially extend your contributions to an IRA and to an employer’s retirement plan.

• Cut costs during retirement. Possibly the biggest cost-cutting measure is downsizing – are you willing and able to move to a less expensive area or scale down your current living space? Of course, this is an emotional decision, as well as a financial one, and downsizing isn’t for everyone, but it might be something to at least consider. As for the lesser ways of reducing expenses, take advantage of senior discounts, which are offered in many areas, including entertainment, public transportation, restaurants and retail establishments. And look for other opportunities, such as cutting out streaming services you don’t use.

• Look for more income from your investments. As you get closer to retirement, and even when you do retire, you might want to adjust your investment portfolio to provide you with more incomeproducing opportunities. However,

even as a retiree, you’ll want some growth potential in your investments to help keep you ahead of inflation.

Ultimately, the more you can bolster your financial security before and during retirement, the less fear you may have of outliving your money.

ARIZONA

Tips for a Safe Hike in August:

1. Start Early: Begin your hike at dawn to avoid the peak heat of the day. Temperatures rise quickly, so the earlier you start, the better.

2. Hydrate: Drink plenty of water before, during, and after your hike. Bring more water than you think you'll need—at least 1 liter per hour of hiking.

3. Wear Sun Protection: Wear a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen with a high SPF. Lightweight, long-sleeved shirts and pants can help protect your skin from the sun.

4. Know the Signs of Heat Illness: Be aware of the symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, including dizziness, nausea, and confusion. If you or someone in your group experiences these symptoms, stop immediately, find shade, and hydrate.

5. Bring Snacks: Pack high-energy snacks like trail mix, energy bars, and fruits to maintain energy levels.

6. Check the Weather: August is monsoon season in Tucson. Check the weather forecast for thunderstorms and flash flood warnings. Avoid hiking if storms are predicted.

7. Tell Someone: Let someone know your hiking plans, including your start time, trail choice, and estimated return time.

8. Know Your Limits: Choose a trail that matches your fitness level and experience. Don't push yourself too hard in the heat.

Recommended Trail: Madera Canyon Nature Trail

Location: Madera Canyon is located about 45 minutes south of Tucson in the Santa Rita Mountains.

AUGUST 2024

Here are some highlighted celestial events and objects to observe in the night sky during August 2024:

• August 4 - New Moon. The Moon will be located on the same side of the Earth as the Sun and will not be visible in the night sky. This phase occurs at 11:15 UTC. This is the best time of the month to observe faint objects such as galaxies and star clusters because there is no moonlight to interfere.

• August 12, 13 - Perseids Meteor Shower. The Perseids is one of the best meteor showers to observe, producing up to 60 meteors per hour at its peak. It is produced by comet Swift-Tuttle, which was discovered in 1862. The Perseids are famous for producing a large number of bright meteors. The shower runs annually from July 17 to August 24. It peaks this year on the night of August 11 and the morning of August 12. The first quarter moon will block out some of the fainter meteors in the early evening. But the Moon will set shortly after midnight leaving dark skies for what could be an excellent early morning show. The

Trail Information:

• Distance: 2 miles round trip.

• Difficulty: Easy to moderate.

• Elevation Gain: Approximately 200 feet.

• Trail Highlights:

o This shaded trail follows Madera Creek, offering cooler temperatures and beautiful scenery.

o The trail is well-maintained and suitable for families and hikers of all skill levels.

o There are numerous bird-watching opportunities, as Madera Canyon is a popular spot for bird enthusiasts.

Additional Safety Tips:

• Monsoon Awareness: If you hear thunder or see lightning, turn back immediately and seek shelter. Flash floods can occur suddenly during monsoon season.

• Emergency Kit: Carry a basic first aid kit, a whistle, a flashlight, and a multi-tool.

• Buddy System: Hike with a friend or in a group for added safety.

Directions to Madera Canyon:

• From Tucson, take I-19 south to exit 63 (Continental Road).

• Turn east on Continental Road and follow the signs for Madera Canyon.

• Continue on Madera Canyon Road to the trailhead parking area. By choosing a shaded trail like Madera Canyon and following these safety tips, you can enjoy a safe and enjoyable hike in Tucson during the hot month of August.

best viewing will be from a dark location after midnight. Meteors will radiate from the constellation Perseus but can appear anywhere in the sky.

• August 19 - Full Moon, Blue Moon. The Moon will be located on the opposite side of the Earth as the Sun and its face will be fully illuminated. This phase occurs at 18:27 UTC. This full moon was known by early Native American tribes as the Sturgeon Moon because the large sturgeon fish of the Great Lakes and other major lakes were more easily caught at this time of year. This moon has also been known as the Green Corn Moon and the Grain Moon. Since this is the third of four full moons in this season, it is known as a blue moon. This rare calendar event only happens once every few years, giving rise to the term, “once in a blue moon.” There are normally only three full moons in each season of the year. But since full moons occur every 29.53 days, occasionally a season will contain 4 full moons. The extra full moon of the season is known as a blue moon. Blue moons occur on average once every 2.7 years.

Superintendent Dr. Valenzuela addresses past success and upcoming school year

Families: During the short weeks of summer, I like to take a little time to reflect upon the successes of the past year and look forward to the goals of the upcoming year.

By many accounts, the recently completed 2023-24 school year was marked by many successes. Our approximately 460 high school graduates in the Class of ‘24 earned over $16,000,000 in postsecondary education scholarships, which was an all-time high! Over 20 students received the new Pima First - Sahuarita WINS! Scholarship, covering two(2) years of full tuition at Pima Community College. The cumulative savings of dual enrollment college credits earned by our students in the last four years is approximately $2,000,000, in corresponding tuition costs at the State universities. We had two of our amazing faculty members, Rebecca Oravec (Wrightson Ridge K-8 School) and Clare Contreras (Sahuarita Primary School), named Top 5 and Top 10 Finalists, respectively, in the prestigious Arizona Teacher of the Year program. The Sahuarita NJROTC program was named Unit of the Year among Area 20 which covers five States in the western USA. The Walden Grove HS Girls Soccer team earned an Arizona State Championship. Also in the athletics arena, the Sahuarita HS wrestling team achieved its third consecutive Arizona State Championship. The Walden Grove HS Team earned second place in the US Academic Decathlon Championships in Pittsburgh last April. All Sahuarita USD schools received excellent or good marks on the State Academic Accountability Report Card. Indeed, we have much to celebrate and be proud of as a community.

previous level, or below.

The forthcoming year brings much reason for hope, optimism and excitement. Last fall, our generous community overwhelmingly passed a $50,000,000 bond program to invest in all of our school facilities. Additionally, we have pursued and successfully received $11,000,000 in School Facilities Oversight Board (SFOB) funding, specifically to meet capacity needs at Walden Grove High School. Already,

meaningful outcomes have been achieved. For example, we have installed 411 new, state of the art Verkada digital security cameras, on all school and District properties, in support of our safety directions and objectives. Also in the area of safety, we have completed the strategic installation of ballistic and riot resistant glass products. Furthermore, this summer, our construction and architect partners are hard at work completing a complete renovation of the field and track at Sahuarita HS and Walden Grove HS. This includes a new 3D Astro Turf synthetic field and modern track and field surfaces. This project is anticipated to be completed in time for the upcoming football and marching band seasons. This upcoming year, we will commence tackling the next projects, including the Walden Grove building additions, field lighting improvements, painting and flooring objectives, and playground improvements at multiple school sites, followed by the construction of new classroom space at the Early Childhood Center, Wrightson Ridge K-8 School, and the new Performing Arts Center! Finally, I must mention that, as pledged, these projects are being delivered to the community while maintaining the school-specific tax rate at the

In partnership with the Town of Sahuarita, we will be bringing our fourth School Resource Officer (SRO) to support our safety and student support goals. Welcome, Ofc. Gwaltney! In our District Office, Mrs. Darlene Robinson will be assuming the position of Assistant Superintendent for Education Services. I’m also pleased to share that our dedicated Information Technology Services team has deployed over 5,500 new Chromebooks and corresponding charging stations, achieving a goal of having each classroom reach a 1:1 device to student ratio. This was only possible through a combination of the resourceful efforts of our dedicated professionals who sought out Federal eRate funding, combined with the generosity of our local community, through the bond program. These devices are an integral part of delivering an excellent education for the world of today and tomorrow. We will continue our strong commitment to professional development, including comprehensive training on effective behavioral assessments and support to students, and the effective integration of new technology, including Artificial Intelligence (AI).

I’m so proud of what we have accomplished, and even more excited about what we are going to do in the future. As always, it is our special spirit of community and teamwork that will continue to produce the attainment of transformational results in the advancement of our mission of student success. Like every great team, we will pursue excellence, share positive energy, work hard, sacrifice, serve, and remain focused on our common goal, the success of each and every student. And, together, we will continue to make a difference!

I look forward to seeing you around campus real soon!

Sincerely,
