President's Message from Scott
Experiences are what great country clubs are all about, and Sahalee had a lot of them in August Last month we held two unforgettable Member-Member tournaments (with associated off-course fun), the Club Championships (congratulations to Ben Minyard and Kim Santiago!), the Solheim Cup, and the SWD Fall Field Day. Additionally, Team Sahalee put on three fabulous outside events hosting Costco, the JPW Foundation, and the KPMG Pro-Am featuring Mariah Stackhouse. Feedback from all these events has been stupendous. Off the golf course, Sahalee hosted a variety of non-golf events, as well as an inaugural “Milkshake Club” and a well-received Yoga session. Expect to see more of these non-golf activities throughout the winter. These past two months have been filled with tremendous experiences for Sahalee members and visitors alike. Those experiences take a lot of planning and hard work to execute. The Sahalee team, led by Leslie, Bryan, and Charlie, has done a tremendous job in providing us with an amazing championship golf course, fabulous meals, and making sure we all have a great time. Thank you all for your hard work and caring!
August Past Business
Part of the strategy we developed in January was to add membership categories while reducing our reliance on 500 Proprietary Memberships (currently at 470). The additional categories and members help to support our F&B operations and increase hours of service, while simultaneously reducing compaction on the golf course The result will be more balanced economics with better greater golf course access We are starting to see results already, with total rounds slightly down and available tee times increasing in prime times (as I discussed in last month’s article)
On the membership front, our Membership Committee and Membership Director Deann Anderson have been busy! Their productive August resulted in 17 new members Our Social Membership category is now full, with a wait list of nine Dining Members waiting to upgrade. We also welcomed our first three National Members, with two past Board members returning to Sahalee and an Anchorage Alaska resident. The “Fall in Love with Sahalee” promotion resulted in nine new members joining to preview Sahalee through April 30th. Please welcome all our new members and look forward to them all falling in love with our high heavenly grounds.
Please welcome these members when you see them around Sahalee:
-Two new Proprietary Members: Yongsik Yoon and family and John Plott who converted from Junior Executive Membership.
-Three new family Dining Members: The Conklin family, the Gill Family, and the Pierce family.
-Three new National Members: David Feeney, Richard Teders, and Jack Calabrese (past President).
-Nine new Preview Members including three Spousal Golf Members: Vu Nguyen, Michael Clark, Cathy Ohashi & William Lu, Michael Richerson, Dave Wilner, Ken Miller, Daniel Berlin, Mauro & Emma Castro, and Won Suh & Jooyeong Moon
Also, the Board approved my nomination of Dawn Naye as Chair of the Board Nominating Committee Traditionally, the most-recent past President has filled this very important role. Identifying the most qualified Sahalee members who have the time and experience to serve the Club and the overall membership is a critical task. Thank you for leading this important Committee, Dawn! Agreeing to serve on the Committee (and approved by the Board of Directors) are Brian Selby, Jeannine Gibson, Jeff Tomlinson, and Michael Nanakul). Thank you all for contributing!
September Business
A few items of note planned for September:
1) Deann will be inviting all Sahalee residents and hosting interested parties who want to learn all about Sahalee in two receptions at the club. The goal is to (re)introduce Sahalee to our neighborhood residents who may not be fully familiar with all the Club has to offer. We’ve had significant changes over the last 4 years (clubhouse renovations upgrades to golf course, and new membership offerings, new team members) so hosting information sessions makes sense. It’s this type of outreach that makes the full Board a supporter of our new proactive approach to membership awareness.
2) A second Junior Executive Information session will be held to connect with those Jr Executive Members who could not make the first session on short notice
And of course, we have the return of the Sahalee Players Championship on this weekend, September 10th and 11th While at the Club today, there was considerable buzz as many of the collegiate teams’ athletes found their way to the club, practiced, and prepared for their first experience with the High Heavenly Grounds of Sahalee. For those who haven’t seen the transformation of the past 2 days, the Club looks fantastic, with flags of each school displayed on the drive up and at the practice tee, SPC tee signs and tee markers on South-North course tees, and a fantast “W” painted on our front lawn. This promises to one of the very best collegiate fields in amateur golf in the country. A lot of effort has gone into making this a very special event. Well over 100 Sahalee members are contributing their time to volunteer for this event. Thank you for helping to elevate Sahalee’s stature even further as we fulfill our founding vision of regularly hosting major tournaments. The festivities kick off Friday, September 8th at 4:00pm with fun exhibition activities by the players – you won’t want to miss it!
Sincerely,
Scott Heydon

Monthly Message from Leslie Ludlow, GM/COO
Dear Sahalee Club Family,
It is almost hard to believe that we are now in the month of September! It seems like we were just kicking off season and then in a fast, but furious blink, here we are on the precipice of winding down for the Fall “offseason ” Before we dive into what lies ahead for the balance of 2023, I’d like to take a minute to appreciate what ended up being an absolutely incredible final month to the heart of the season
As great as July was, from a member experience perspective, August turned out even better with several marquee events going off without a hitch! On the Member Golf Tournament front, we named new Club Champions for both the men and the women Congratulations to Kim Santiago and Ben Minyard for the 2023 title! Both Member Member events resulted in nothing but incredible feedback on all components of the tournaments- Food & Beverage, Golf & Agronomy In addition to those 3 major events, we also mixed in (3) outside events including hosting a Pro-Am featuring Mariah Stackhouse, the SWD Solheim Cup and SWD Fall Field Day, that latter of which was hailed by some as potentially “the best women’s event EVER at Sahalee ”
In August on the F&B front, the team also executed excellence on multiple private member events among all the aforementioned tournaments. Once again, this outside event revenue significantly exceeded budget, which is key in controlling food costs as well aids in offsetting some of our fixed labor expenses. Adding to everything else already packed in one month, we had not one, but TWO Live Music Nights, Wine Tasting, Milkshake Club, Yoga, Prime Rib Night, Mongolian Grill….. and hosted the PGA for a week! Huge high fives to the F&B team in the month of August for providing SO many opportunities for members to enjoy the Club and by all accounts with several emails of glowing feedback, killed it along the way!
Reflecting on this whirlwind of a summer, there is no shortage of appreciation to share with the Sahalee Team. A common refrain across the Club all season long was a song of praise for the golf course conditions, which seemed to be in unison that they were some of the best in recent memory. Charlie, Pat, and their team did an EXEPTIONAL job this entire summer in creating and maintaining the Championship level course that Sahalee is known for across the country. It cannot be overstated what a gift Sahalee has in our Director of Agronomy!
I think it might be surprising for many to learn that the Golf Team executed over 160 organized golf functions this year. This is in addition to the daily work required for a 27-hole course facility, lessons, and let’s not forget hosting raters, members of the media, building out a caddie program and more!
Bryan and now, with the addition of Caleb this season, along with the entire golf team have been able to elevate every tournament we hosted this year as well as the day-to-day operation to the premier golf experience worthy of the incredible Championship Course we are so lucky to call ours! When Major League Baseball was here in June, their Tournament Director remarked that “Sahalee has set the gold standard as far as their tournament is concerned ” This is in relation to last year’s tournament for MLB being hosted at Riviera Country Club This same feedback was echoed in tournament after tournament this year. It would not be hyperbole to say that we have not only one of the best Directors of Golf in the business, but easily the best duo in the PNW and possibly in the country.
While there were some bumps in the early part of the season in food & beverage directly following the exit of our Director, the team found their footing in Mid-June and never looked back. What the food & beverage team, led by Alexa, Adrian, Caden, Karen, Remy and Sarah were able to accomplish is awe-inspiring. Every tournament this summer, both internal and external, was on point from the food, to décor, room sets, service execution and innovative beverage offerings. In addition to the events, many favorite specialty dining nights were served throughout the season, weekly fresh sheets, live music & wine nights, expanded hours from years past, dozens of private events, 3 menu rotations since the start of the year and so much more. This is not to say everything was perfect, but between the amount of activity and not having a key role of the team filled, what they were able to do this summer was nothing short of EXCEPTIONAL!
This has also been an incredible season for Membership being led by Deann. With the support from the Membership Committee and Board, the momentum behind membership sales has been very different from years past at Sahalee. Since her arrival in February and with new membership category offerings becoming available as of May, we have welcomed nearly 100 NEW membership families, with 17 of those coming in the past 30 days. Leading the month was 9 new members (with 3 spouses) joining our new “Fall in Love” with Sahalee Preview Membership. The overall success in membership this year is a product of great new membership offerings, but also of a very concentrated strategic outreach effort to truly engage the market and Sahalee Community We are looking forward to a very active offseason in sales as we expand our social programming calendar, as well as food & beverage offerings
Of course, this great season would not have been possible without YOU, the Membership, participating in the events, dining at the Club and referring your friends to become part of our family One of the key phrases that we have been using across the Club this year is, “if we build it, they will come!” Thank you for coming out this season, for trying an event that you may not have participated in before, for bringing your friends to dine with us, for packing out every specialty dining night and for your support during a season whereby there were a lot of new faces that had never seen a full season at Sahalee before.
As we look forward to the fall and winter, it is our intention to continue to try new concepts, events, and offerings. We are going to continue to push ourselves to explore different ideas to enhance all members’ experiences at Sahalee. Will everything be a homerun? Probably not. Will we find some great new additions to the calendar or enhancements to current favorites? Absolutely. As an example, last week we announced a Luxury Wine Tasting- it sold out in a matter of hours. We are hopeful that more of the events follow this same trend as we start to move away from the activity on the course and into the clubhouse with the changes of the season.
Our goal is not necessarily perfection as it is not realistic nor achievable (a 54 has never been shot on Tour for a reason), but it is to get better and go “lower” every time we get out on the course. We acknowledge that there will be bogeys along the way, but this team is striving to have far more circles than squares on the scorecard at the end of the year I think that goal is being achieved as we have made the turn and are in the final stretch on the back With more members now removing their names from the resignation list than are adding to it monthly, signs seem to indicate that this momentum is being felt across the entire Club
It is and will continue to be a process, however, in reflecting upon this season it feels like the Pride in Sahalee continues to gain more and more steam as each month passes This weekend with the return of the Sahalee Players Championship is just the exclamation point on a great season of which this entire Club should be so incredibly proud!
Cheers!

Letter From Bryan Nicholson, PGA Director of Golf
Wow, what a great summer we’ve had at the Club, and I’ve heard from many members that it has been the best they’ve seen at the Club! We’ve enjoyed some fabulous golf course conditions over the past few months, and it’s a reminder of how we continue to define the finest golf experience in the Northwest! Our golf calendar has been very busy throughout August, and we enjoyed some fantastic events at the Club Now, as we turn the corner from summer to fall, we still have many fun reasons to keep those clubs nearby. Throughout this summer it has been so much fun to see families enjoy the Club together, and it’s a reminder to all of us that at its very core, golf brings us all together.
Let’s take a step back and reflect upon the month of August, and recap some of the events and acknowledge our Champions. The Men’s Member-Member was played the final week of the month, and the 132-player field enjoyed near perfect conditions throughout the weekend. The Final 9 was filled with 12 total groups (24 teams) vying for the top honors! In the finals, Jean-Francois Desgagne and Chris LaFreniere got off to a hot start and kept the petal to the metal. With an opening birdie on 8 North, LaFreniere then made a birdie (net eagle) on the second hole and the tandem was quickly 3 under par. Through the middle of the finals, Jeff Tomlinson and Jeff Ratzlaff gave it their very best to make a charge, but they couldn’t keep pace with Desgagne and LaFreniere. The duo recorded three more net birdies on 4 – 6 North to finish at six under par and win by 2.5 shots over Ratzlaff and Tomlinson. The victory for Desgagne and LaFreniere was their first Member-Member title and capped an incredible week to celebrate a fabulous summer of golf activity at the High Heavenly Ground!
Championship Week at the Club featured three contests hosted together for the second time at the Club The Men’s, Women’s and Junior Club Championship featured some fabulous matches! A 27-hole final exam was all that was between four players and the respective titles for our Men’s and Women’s Club Championship Ben Minyard and Ben Garrett duked it out for the Men’s title, while Kim Santiago and Tomoko Ratzlaff went toe-totoe once in the Women’s Championship
The Men’s Club Championship started with Ben Minyard getting off to a blazing start against Ben Garrett being 5 up after 7 holes. After a phenomenal up and down on 8 East by Garrett to save par, and a two putt bogey on 9 East, Garrett clawed his way back to being only three down heading into the final 18 holes. On the South 9, Garrett would continue his steady play to claw back into the match, and ultimately pulled the match on 8 all square after 13 holes. On 5 south, Minyard dialed a mid-iron below the hole to 3 feet and converted the birdie to retake the lead. After another birdie on 8 South (17th)
Minyard took the lead for good, and ultimately wouldn’t relinquish his hold on the title. Playing the final 9 with steady iron play, Minyard ultimately wore-down Garrett 5 & 3 to take his first Club Championship!
–
Our Women’s Club Championship featured a rookie in Sahalee competition, Kim Santiago, against a grizzled competitor in Tomoko Ratzlaff This incredible match had several momentum swings throughout the 3 sides Ultimately both players would be tied heading into the final 9 Both players would trade wins on 1 North and 2 North, and then Santiago would take a 1 up lead after making a par on the 23rd hole (5 North) After a second par victory on 6 North, Santiago was 2 up with only 3 to play. Ratzlaff was determined, however, and made an incredible par save from 15 feet on 7 South to cut the lead to just 1. The two players traded pars on the 26th hole (8 North), and Santiago was 1 up with the final hole (9 North) to play. On the final hole, Ratzlaff knocked her 3rd shot to approximately 15 feet, and had an opportunity for birdie. Santiago was in the left greenside bunker in 2 shots, and her bunker shot came out a little thin to the back of the green. Faced with a challenging and slippery downhill chip shot, Santiago nestled the chip to inches from the hole, forcing Ratzlaff to make her putt for birdie. Ratzlaff’s putt missed right of the hole, and Santiago claimed her first Sahalee Club Championship!
Our Junior Club Championship was also contested – and winning our 2023 Sahalee Junior Club Championship for the first time in the Boys 18-Hole Division was Charlie Gorman. Winning the Girls 18-Hole Division was also a first time Champion in Rosalie Halle.
The Women’s Member-Member was played at the beginning of the month, and going into the final round, there was a three-way tie at the top for overall net of the field. After battling on the course, team Rose Crowe and Paula Miller claimed the 2023 Title! Congratulations, ladies!
Early October will continue to be an active month at the High Heavenly Ground Our SMD and SWD Guest Days were pushed back one week to the first week of October (SMD – 10/4, and SWD 10/6) due to the delayed green aeration schedule with the SPC I’ll close this month with a little putting information! One of the most common questions I receive is: It feels like I am three putting from the 30-foot range more than I should be How often should I three putt from that distance?"
Check out the percentages based on your handicap, and I think you’ll be surprised: (Lesson – hit it closer to the hole – and work on speed control to avoid 3 putts!)

SPC Update
After a four-year wait, the Sahalee Players Championship has finally returned!
From 1992 to 2019, the SPC was held 25 times and featured what are now some of the best players in the world. After a brief respite due to the pandemic, in early 2021, Sahalee and UW Men’s Golf collaborated to change the format from an independently-run, individual Amateur event in the summer – to a 12-team NCAA tournament beginning this year. The goal was to have the best Amateur golfers in the world playing Sahalee - now, and in the future. As you will witness at this year’s event
we have succeeded in just that. The SPC will likely be the most competitive field of teams in college golf outside the National Championships. Our course will be in amazing condition, and with elevated rough, tucked pin placements and hard and fast greens. The teams who accepted our invitations are here to see Sahalee at its best and won’t be disappointed.
I encourage each one of you to try to come by the club this weekend to attend the event. The event is a “no ropes” event and admission is free. Bring your friends and family to share the experience! An event like this offers unparalleled access and viewpoints to all the players and action. The clubhouse will be open for all members to enjoy during the event so you can enjoy your regular favorites.
For example:
• There are over 100 Sahalee members volunteering at the SPC.
• There are over 50 other volunteers from outside the club membership.
• The Sahalee BOD was originally pitched on the SPC concept change over 2 years ago.
• Every component of club (Leadership, BOD, Committees, Staff, Golf, F&B, Agronomy, and many others) have played a role in preparing for this event.
• Local Press have picked up this event and have run multiple television and media hits.
• UW Alumni, Boosters and Tyee Club have sponsored this event.
• The Individual Winner of the tournament will play next week on the PGA Tour!

FIELD SUMMARY
You will not see another field in college golf like this - 10 of the 12 teams competing are currently ranked in the NCAA top 25!
PLAYERS TO WATCH
The teams boast an incredible roster of talented individuals from across the globe!
Once again, we hope you can attend this weekend and show your Sahalee Pride. No other club in the Pacific Northwest hosts Championship events like Sahalee! If you have any questions about the event, please call the Pro Shop any time.
Sincerely,
Kevin White SPC Tournament Chair

Learn to Curve the Golf Ball Ryan Benzel
In my newest video, I talk about Learning to Curve the golf ball. This can be a simple process to learn with a little time and effort on the practice tee. You will also find this extremely helpful when navigating the trees around Sahalee!
First, you must identify your TARGET LINE (TL)…the line from your ball to your intended target. Next, you are working to create your START LINE (SL) to be to the right for a draw / left for a fade of your TL. Adjust your body to align parallel to your SL with a clubface still square to your TL. The clubface will be ‘closed’ for a draw and ‘open’ for a fade in relation to your SL. Finally, swing normal to your aligned SL and watch the ball curve!
Please connect with me if you want to add this to your game or refine what you already know. Email to setup a lesson at ryan.benzel@sahalee.com

Turf Talk with Charlie
August rounded out our summer season on the course(s) with another great month of events and member play. Both the Men’s and Women’s Member-Members were well received with fast and true greens, and the Club Championship midmonth proved to be a great test yielding first time Men’s and Women’s champions. The inaugural NCAA Sahalee Players Championship on September 9th and 10th should prove to be an exciting battle between the game’s top collegiate golfers and our championship course here at Sahalee. Competitors will have to navigate firm greens, challenging pin locations, and deep (4” +) rough as they contend for the title of Sahalee Players Champion!
Fall Aerification
Following a busy summer during which Sahalee hosted countless tournaments, thousands of rounds, and heavy golf course maintenance traffic, aerification each fall is an important process in turfgrass management. Aerification relieves soil compaction caused by golf and maintenance traffic and creates channels for water movement and gas exchange in the turfgrass rootzone The incorporation of sand topdressing during aerification improves soil structure over time resulting in improved drainage, firmer playing surfaces, and healthier turfgrasses Our fall aerification at Sahalee includes a variety of practices across different areas and the anticipated schedule is as follows:
·9/11, 9/12 – Dryject poorly draining fairway areas and tees
·9/13 – 9/15 – Deep verticut and core aerate fairway areas per thatch map
·9/18 – Conventional solid tine greens aerification and heavy sand topdress
·9/19, 9/20 – Solid tine approach aerification and heavy sand topdress
·9/21, 9/22 – Solid tine tee aerification, overseed, and heavy sand topdress
·9/25 – 9/27 – Solid tine fairway aerification, overseed, and heavy sand topdress
·9/25 – 9/29 – Core aerification of all rough grass, overseed rough areas
With fall in the air and the primary golf season winding down, I’d like to commend our excellent turf care staff for an outstanding summer on the golf course(s). Their passion and dedication to Sahalee is on display each and every day with the conditioning, presentation, and stewardship of our championship course(s). Thank you to the team!
See you on the course,
Charlie Director of Agronomy
A Note from our SWD Captain
What a golf season we’ve had in 2023! I think all SWD members will agree we’ve made new friends, welcomed new members and embraced the energy we’ve created!
At our Fall Town Halls and surveys, our members asked for more mixers, and we’ve had 3 of them: Season Opener, Swing Day and Fall Field Day. It’s been great fun and an easy way to meet new people and play together with all handicap levels. On top of that we’ve had Captain’s Cup, Spring Field Day, President’s Cup, Invitational, Member/Member, and Club Championships. Participation has been phenomenal and this 2023 season has roared back to life!
Our final golf event will be on October 6, with Peggy Halbert and Pari Jonwahirachi leading the way with “Aloha from Sahalee”. Usually, each member invites 1 guest, but this year we can invite 3! Many of us have lots of golfing friends who aren’t Sahalee members and this is our chance to show off our club and maybe build potential membership!
Fall Field Day was another big success with “Three Queens and an Ace” theme and innovative fun games, lots of prizes with a leadership team of Mary Love Mattox and Sonja Grusz The Horserace that followed was loads of fun with players and betting spectators following along in carts! Hats off to Laura and the Pro Shop for helping make this and other events so successful
Our Tuesday and Friday/Saturday games will continue through the end of September, thanks to Sally Wallace She has introduced new, fun competitions that are fun for golfers of all levels.
To top off this season, we’re bringing back the Finale Luncheon on October 17th and the awards of “Most Improved Golfer”, “Most Inspirational” and “Greatest Contribution” awards will be revealed. Peggy Halbert, Paula Miller and Fatima Siddiqui are sure to provide a top-notch meal and decorations. Sign-ups will be available soon. Be sure to attend!
See you on the links!

Way to go team for such a fabulous year! Many thanks to my Assistant Captain, Dawn Naye, for filling in and helping with our events. Also a huge thank you to Bryan Nicholson, Ryan Benzel and the wonderful pro shop staff who put on team clinics and provided ongoing help throughout the year.
Our “Sahalee Cup”, with a Solheim Cup format, was a huge success with two teams of eight players going head to head, playing scratch in four nine-hole matches. Congratulations to the “White” team who took the honors this year with a 12-8 win. Hope to see you all at our team dinner on Thursday Sept. 28th. You should all be so proud!
