A Letter from our President Spring is here, and the club is starting to get busy. We had two significant dining events in April – both huge successes! On Easter Sunday, the club served over 400 members and guests. We heard from several members that it was an amazing and memorable experience. I personally pulled into the club to play golf and was greeted with the sight of an adorable group of young children hunting for easter eggs on the North lawn. It warmed my heart seeing all the families enjoy the holiday at Sahalee. The PNGA & PGA Hall of Fame Banquet on April 23rd hosted nearly 200. It was a wonderful night for Sahalee, as we were roundly praised for our rich history and gracious hospitality. The highlight of course was Marcus King’s induction into the Hall of Fame. Marcus’ 3 decades of service was celebrated by all – especially the five tables of Sahalee members and staff in attendance. It was the kind of night that helped us all realize how lucky we are to be at Sahalee, where our impact is throughout the golfing world. Congratulations to Marcus, and to Justin’s team for hosting such a world-class event! Past Business The primary focus in April was the communication of the recent updates to Course Access policies. With the Board approval at the end of March, we communicated the changes and the ‘why’ behind them. You can find the details on the Sahalee website portal. In the end, we are trying to solve the problem of reduced availability and access to our treasured course in prime time. The policies approved were designed to help create some capacity and limit a bit of demand in those peak windows. As you will read from Bryan below, it seems to be having the desired effect. More than a few members have commented that the course seems to be in better shape than ever before. Charlie and his team have done a great job with aerification, despite many weather challenges. You will also notice our new Yeti cooler stands and trash receptacles – providing a highly-upgraded feel to the previous metal baskets. It’s all a part of our desire to upgrade the club’s experience, amenities and appeal for members and guests. Also this month, we welcome 3 new members to the club. They all came highly recommended, and we look forward to you meeting them and them meeting you. All are excited about starting their memberships. When you see someone at the club who you don’t recognize, stick out your hand with a warm Sahalee greeting and make a new friend! With the sun starting to make a more frequent appearance, we have several inquiries for membership at all levels. History suggests the most effective way to attract new members who fit into the Sahalee culture is through member referrals. Please consider your friends, colleagues, and family as prospective members who may looking for an active golf and social scene. An ideal opportunity is to invite them on June 5th in our annual Guest Day. It is the perfect combination of competition and fun for prospective members. At our April Board meeting, we reviewed the club’s financial performance through the first quarter of 2022. We are slightly ahead of budget for the first 3 months of 2022 ($107.9k ahead in Net Operating Profit and $177.9k ahead in Net Profit). Q1 actual results showed a Net Operating Loss of $137.1k and a Net Gain of $28.7k. Also, typically, the slower months early and late in the year result in small losses while the peak summer season brings in more business and better financial results. Continued on next page:
A Letter from our President During Q1 we have had some delayed expenses that we plan to occur later in the year –so that created a small improvement in Q1 but will be a drag on financials later this year. Marcus and his team have done a nice job making decisions now to adjust to financial shifts that have occurred since setting the budget back in November (e.g., bunker renovation costs higher, more club-owned memberships than we had anticipated). You should know that the Board is providing the right level of oversight and guidance while Marcus and his team are acting as good financial stewards of member dues and capital dollars. Here’s a quick summary of Sahalee’s first quarter 2022 financial performance:
Note: numbers may not add perfectly due to rounding:
New Business Looking forward, we are working with the Finance Committee, Siemon (our wonderful Controller) and Marcus to fine-tune our financial forecasting process. This will enable the club to have a better grasp on multiple outcomes as financial trends shift throughout the year. Additionally, the Golf Committee is working at the request of our Director of Golf to consider ways to improve pace of play. Pace of play can often be a hot button at private clubs – especially during peak times. The committee is looking at ways to make it easier for all of us to have a more consistent experience in terms of time to complete a round. Here’s to warming weather, decreasing rain, and amazing experiences with acquaintances old and new. Warmly, Scott Heydon Club President

A Letter from our Director of Golf The phrase “April showers bring May flowers” is a popular saying used during the month of April to remind us of warmer and drier days in our future. For the past 2 years, La Nina has firmly been in control of our weather here in Western Washington, and our temperatures have been running well below average this spring. Despite some of the challenges from Mother Nature, the golf course is in fabulous shape and the work that our Agronomy team has completed following aerification is paying dividends. Golf activity at the Club is steadily increasing, and we are excited to get our 2022 golf calendar fully underway. Throughout April, our social golf scene kicked off on Sunday, April 24 and we had 32 total players tee it up on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. It was a fabulous way to kickoff this initiative in tandem with our Social Committee. Following golf, the teams enjoyed food and drinks, in a truly lively atmosphere. Moreover, it was great to see the array of golfers and playing abilities that participated, and we are looking forward to continuing this momentum with our May Twilight golf on Friday, May 20. Our SWD opened their season with 40 ladies playing a 9-hole scramble from the family tees. Many of the ladies asked if they could play from the family tees every round! Yes, driving par 4 greens and getting to par 5 holes in two shots is a lot of fun! To round out the month, the SMD hosted their Chapman event with nearly 50 teams participating. Everyone braved the elements to start the day, but persevered and were awarded with a beautiful final nine. Our Gross Champions this year with an impressive 2 under par 70 was George Glauser and Shawn Kelly, while our Net Champions of Aiden Waine and John Tinkham combined for a net 64.6. Looking ahead to our golf schedule, our preeminent net stroke play event, The President’s Cup, will be hosted for both Divisions on Saturday, May 14. This is our first endeavor at combining both divisions for this Championship, and we look forward to a great day of golf and Sahalee camaraderie. Our Men’s Division will also host their PGA Championship event the following week on Saturday, May 21. This coincides with the PGA of America Championship contested that same weekend at Southern Hills Country Club outside Tulsa. Our Sahalee members will test their individual mettle with the Sunday hole locations from the 1998 PGA Championship contested here at Sahalee. On the Instructional scene, my team has been active working on the lesson tee! Our summer “scoring series” started with the flatstick in April, and we will pivot to chipping this month. In June, we will head to the beach and get in the bunkers in June. These scoring series clinics area designed to help you improve your short game and learn how to lower your score. Laura and I will be tackling a “new golfer” clinic series at the beginning of the month, and Laura has also been busy helping a group of dedicated golfers improve their club speed this spring. If anyone in your family is interested in learning the game, or would like to get reconnected with golf, our new golfer series is a perfect fit. Not to be missed, our junior golfers are having a blast with our PGA Junior League. Ryan and Jacob have been leading these teams, and we look forward to seeing their growth and development throughout the spring. Our junior golf scene at the Club will continue to ramp up over the summer months with weekly junior development, and our weeklong summer camp activities. If you are interested in any of the junior or “big kids” (aka adult) group instruction, please see us in the golf shop. We are excited to work with you and help improve your game. Speaking of improving your game, I am going to put in a “pitch” for setting a time aside to meet with one of the Golf Professionals to check your bag. Just this past month, I spent time with two different members that helped them better understand their equipment. Originally coming to check out a new driver, we discovered that their existing driver simply needed tweaked, and instantly picked up 12 yards by making sure the head was in the proper configuration for their swing. A second member came in for a wedge fitting, and we discovered the lie angles of his irons were incorrect. After making the adjustments to his existing iron set, he’s now playing some of his best golf. With our Trackman technology at the Club, we bring the gold standard of golf club and golf ball performance to you. It is worth the time to seek out this information to help you play your best! Despite many supply-chain issues we are managing (who isn’t?), we have some exciting new amenities to let you know about. During your next visit at the Club, please take note of the beautiful new waste and recycle containers that are around the clubhouse and on the golf course. These beautiful wooden pieces match our new Yeti enclosures to create a consistent feel throughout the campus. Our containers feature labels designating the waste and recycle sides, and I encourage everyone to think about sustainability and help us with our recycling initiatives around the Club. Please recycle when and where you can, as these choices will help our future generations! This month we will have two new faces join our team in golf operations this summer from the PGM Program at UNLV. These interns will be working primarily with our outside services operation, but they will also be helping the golf professional team with our summer junior golf programming. Sam Irvine comes to us from Sacramento, California, and Drew Romaine is a local product from Maple Valley. Sam will begin on May 12, and Drew will hit the ground running on May 18. Please extend these two a warm Sahalee welcome upon their arrival. I’ll leave off this month with some insightful data from PGA Tour Shotlink over the ’20-’22 seasons. From 140 – 159 yards in the fairway, the best players in the world hit the green 79% of the time to a back pin, and 71% of the time to a front pin. From 160 – 179 yards, PGA Tour players hit the green 74% of the time to a back pin, and 61% of the time to a front pin. I share this information because there is a valuable lesson to be learned here! When the pin is up front – consider adding a few yards to get to the middle of the green. Most golfers under club when approaching a front pin and could benefit by playing to the green centers! Try it during your next round of golf, and see if it makes a difference for your game. See you at the Club! Fairways and Greens, Bryan
Turf Talk with Charlie
With Rhododendrons and Azaleas blooming across the golf course(s), spring is finally in the air! As meteorologists predicted, we experienced an unusually wet and cold start to our year with numerous frosty and frozen days stretching all the way into April. I certainly can’t say we’re out of the woods yet, but Sahalee’s turf care team is excited for more sunny and warm days to showcase our course(s) as we begin our primary golf season. As course and weather conditions improve, Sahalee is always at its busiest from May through September. With this busy season on the horizon, it is an ideal time to refocus on those practices that can help keep our course(s) at their best. As a reminder, please note the following: 1. Repair all ball-marks left on the putting surface from your shot as well as one additional 2. Replace or fill all divots taken in the fairways, tees and rough 3. Follow approved cart rules for each day (Carts on Paths or 90 degrees) depending on course conditions In addition to these on-course courtesies, please see the below illustration on proper divot taking technique on our natural grass driving range tee. The preferred method (left) of taking divots in a linear pattern has been proven by the USGA to reduce the amount of turf removed by almost 50%. By following this technique, you can help our turf care team maintain the best possible turfgrass surface for practice. The natural grass range tee will be available Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays throughout the summer season, and your help to maintain it is greatly appreciated! Poa annua vs. Ryegrass One agronomic quality of Sahalee is that we have two primary turf species—annual bluegrass (Poa annua) and perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne).Although both turf species perform well in the PNW climate, they have different characteristics and applications.Poa, our dominant species, covers the entirety of our greens surfaces as well as the majority of our fairways, tees and rough. Ryegrass alternatively, is primarily used for overseeding and divot repairs on our course(s).The reason that ryegrass is necessary is because the biodiversity within the Poa annua species has largely prevented Poa annua seed and sod from being commercially produced. In the absence of accessible Poa seed, ryegrass is the highest performing alternative to overseed thin or damaged areas and fill divots on the course(s). This, however, does present some challenges because of the differences between Poa annua and perennial ryegrass. Poa annua tends to be lower growing, while ryegrass grows more vertically in bunch-type formations. This is especially troublesome for playability around our greens where delicate shots are required. See pictures... (ryegrass is the darker colored and taller grass) Over the upcoming weeks, our turf care team will utilize several practices to reduce the ryegrass population immediately in front of and around our greens to improve turf uniformity for chip and pitch shots. One thing that our members can do to help in this effort is to avoid filling divots with our sand and seed mix in the immediate vicinity of the greens (with 10 yards). Instead, simply replace or step-down divots near greens and our turf care team will perform additional repairs where necessary without the use of ryegrass seed. Over time, this effort should help us increase our Poa annua uniformity near greens and reduce these challenging lies. See you on the course! Charlie Schauwecker Golf Course Superintendent
Lessons and Tips with Ryan Have you ever been fit for a putter? When we think about golf club fitting, generally our thoughts instantly turn to drivers and irons, but what about your putter? Given the importance of putting and how roughly 40% of our shots are putts, it makes sense that a putter fitting should be the first club rather than the last club we think about getting fit too. Fitting for a driver and irons with no ball ‘data’ would be crazy, so why is it OK for a putter fitting? Did you know the optimal launch angle for a putt is between 0.75 – 2 degrees? Enter the Quintic Ball Roll system, the launch monitor for putting! There are 5 key parameters important to a putter and ball performance in a fitting: 1. face rotation 2. face angle 3. impact ball speed 4. launch angle 5. zero skid Now think of the build aspects of a putter that can vary in a fitting to affect these parameters: putter head shape, alignment features, offset, total weight, length, lie angle, loft, grip, hosel type, and putter face material. By getting a proper putting fitting, you can improve the consistency of your putting and short game. Through the collection of Quintic data, I can then accurately and scientifically start to adjust an existing putter OR fit you into a putter that improves ball performance. We now have a putter loft/lie machine to measure and bend the loft and lie angle of a putter. This is a key tool needed for a proper fitting and analysis. Connect with me to analyze your putter today and make more putts this season! Get fit for a putter in May or June with me and receive 10% off any putter including stock and special order.

Krafty Korner The game of golf is expanding rapidly. While the pandemic has been frustrating in many facets of life, it’s been a tremendous opportunity for the growth of golf around the world. According to the National Golf Foundation, a record number, 3.2 million people, played their first ever round of golf in 2021. That’s almost a million more than the previous record in 2000. Additionally, the number of female golfers has surpassed 6 million for the first time since before 2007 making them the largest growing demographic in golf. Those are some remarkable numbers! We are always looking for ways to grow the game through our programming here at Sahalee. Whether it’s opportunities for adults like our New Golfer Clinic, or opportunities for our youth like PGA Junior League and Junior Golf Camps, we want to help facilitate more golf for all to enjoy. To the avid golfer here at Sahalee, if you see a new member or a beginning golfer, I encourage you to say hello and give them some positive words. This game can be intimidating if you didn’t grow up around it, and any positive reinforcement can help create a new lifetime golfer! A Note from our Women's Division Captain The first Women's Division event is in the books and a big congratulations to Eleanor Devlin, Fatima Siddiqui, Linda Graham, and Trina Kain who were able to edge out Julie Reid, Erika Nash, and Cary Young in the scorecard playoff. Both teams shot an impressive 23 under par! We were very lucky with the weather which had promised plenty of rain but even though it was a little chilly at the start we had a dry day with periodic sunshine. The Captains Cup is underway and the next event is the Presidents Cup on May 14th. June 7th is our Spring Field Day so it's time to get your teams together for what is one of our biggest and most fun events of the year. Dawn Naye and Sharon Dobie are working on organizing the event which will combine competition, good food, fun, and hopefully nothing but sunshine and straight drives. Thanks, Debbie Acton

Our Sahalee Women's Golf Team started the 2022 season off with incredible play by every team member in our first match at Overlake Country Club. We took 11 out of 12 points! Courtney Brown shot a 76 for “Low Gross of the Field”; Grace Wei posted a 78; and Michelle Hood and Soon Kim, both shot a 79. Everyone else was not far behind. Awesome golf! Ryan Benzel and Bryan Nicholson, along with Laura and Wallace, put together preseason clinics, which definitely helped our games! Then, on April 14th, we played our second match at Glendale Country Club. This time our team took all 12 points! Michelle Hood shot a 79 again for "Low Gross of the Field". Our Sub Bracket was led by Jane Fung and Dawn Naye, who took all 3 points. GO SAHALEE!

Sahalee Players Championship Update The Sahalee Players Championship (SPC) is the Men’s College event that Sahalee will be hosting on an annual basis starting in September 2023. Co-Hosted by UW Men’s Golf, and Sahalee, the SPC will be one of the best fields in College Golf, showcasing the beauty and pure golf course that Sahalee is. The expected field includes: Arizona, Arizona State, Duke, Florida, Illinois, Oklahoma State, Pepperdine, Stanford, Texas, USC, Wake Forest, and Washington. SPC Alumni Scottie Scheffler wins The Masters and is #1 in the World Scottie Scheffler walked the fairways of Sahalee in the summer of 2014 as an 18-year-old recent high school graduate, on his way to play golf for the University of Texas. Despite his being the #2 ranked amateur golfer in the world at the time, he never managed to break par at Sahalee that year and settled for a mid-field finish. He was in good company as Bryson Dechambeau, Xander Schauffele, CT Pan, and Cam Davis were all in the field that year, but none could take home the victory. UW Huskies Win the PAC-12 Championships Aldarra hosted the Pac-12 Conference Tournament last week, and it was an amazing event. I noticed several Sahalee members both spectated and volunteered, and everyone was treated to a great tournament and great golf. Coming into the tournament, Arizona State would have been the favorite, but were somewhat hampered by one of their best players, David Puig (top 20 player in the world) being injured. The Huskies would have also made a great argument for pre-tournament favorites with their #6 team ranking and boasting one of the top players in the country, RJ Manke. Having home course advantage couldn’t hurt either. Rounding out the favorites was perennial golf powerhouse Stanford, who seem to have strong teams every year. For the Individual tournament, it seemed to be a 2-man race between Washington’s Noah Woolsey, and Stanford’s Barclay Brown. Noah had the lead after Day 1, and Barclay had the lead after Day 2. Heading into the final round and in the same pairing, Barclay would keep his lead until a critical mistake on the par 5 11th gave Noah a 3 shot lead. Not giving up, Barclay preceded to birdie 4 holes in a row to keep things very tight. Noah was not taking his foot off the gas throwing a couple birdies on the back nine to extend his lead to 3 shots on the 17th tee. After a nervy double bogey from Noah, the Individual lead was down to one on the 18th, where Noah hit the shot of the tournament, an approach shot from the rough to 9 feet for a comfortable 2 putt for the victory. This is a real nice win for Noah, a 5th year senior, who has given so much to the Husky program over the years. It also caps a huge week for Noah, as the week before, he secured his PGA Tour Canada card via Q-School at the Home Course. Congratulations Noah! In the team competition, as expected, UW, Arizona State, and Stanford were on top during the whole tournament, and the lead never exceeded single digits (this is a very close margin in college golf). At the end of Day 2, the Huskies played the last 2 holes in 6 under whereas their opponents played the same holes in 2 over, leaving the Huskies with a 7-shot lead heading into the final round. As the final round began, at one point, the lead was tied, but the course difficulty started to show its impact, and Arizona State faded back while Stanford showed itself to be UW’s main competition. Once again, the Huskies finished brilliantly in “the gauntlet”, a nickname given to the final 4 holes at Aldarra, finishing with a team 3-shot victory. The celebration was amazing, and the players and coaches deserved all the accolades that came their way! Congratulations Huskies! SPC Tournament Update On Saturday, April 23rd, Sahalee hosted 4 teams who were participating that week at the Pac-12 championships. Arizona State, Arizona, California, and Utah were out on the High Heavenly Ground on an amazing weather day. All the teams loved the course and were very appreciative to have been given the opportunity to play. Arizona and Arizona State will be back in September 2023 to play in the SPC. I had an opportunity to meet and speak with most of the Pac 12 coaches last week. I was picking their brains on how we can make our event as good as it can possibly be. The enthusiasm of the coaches and players whose teams will be at the SPC is extremely high, and the teams that are currently not in our field are asking how they can get an invite to future years. Club leadership and the SPC team are continuing to meet to discuss some advance planning components for the tournament. We intentionally are leaving the UW Men’s team alone as they pursue a national championship on the course. Look for an announcement for an event at Sahalee with UW Men’s team in late June, with the event being held in early Fall. What to Watch: The NCAA Regional Selection Show will be on Golf Channel Wednesday, May 4th. On that show, the Huskies will learn their Regional site and field. There are 6 regional sites that ultimately will make up the field for the National Championships that start Memorial Day long weekend in Scottsdale at Grayhawk.
