STRETCH, STRENGTHEN, & SIP WINE TASTING NIGHT

President's Message from Scott

July was an inspiring month with lots of amazing activities: Senior Club Championship, Men’s and Women’s Invitationals, the Putting Championship, and plenty of dining events (Prime Rib Night, Mongolian Grill Night, Pasta Night, Live Music Night, and more) Both marquee Invitational events were held with rave reviews from members and guests alike I think all will agree, Charlie and the Agronomy Team have the golf course in amazing condition I have heard several members comment on how “it’s never been this good” and I would agree Dozens of the guests who visited Sahalee during the Men’s and Women’s Invitationals, many commented on the dramatically improved feel of the course, facilities, and food & beverage quality Many improvements have been introduced over the previous twelve months It is not as easy to notice for those that are playing the course and dining with us on a regular basis But for those who haven’t been here in some time…. WOW!!!

July Past Business

The Board reviewed June and first half 2023 financial results which were below our original budget. Year to date, the club is slightly behind the original budget by a small amount (1 0% of revenues) Initiated last year, the leadership team continues the quarterly forecasting process projecting out the balance of 2023 with any new information and assumptions Based on this forecast, the club currently projects 2023 to finish with a small loss (about 0 3% of revenues) versus a small profit that was budgeted late in 2022 Initiation fees, however, are significantly behind plan While the club will again exceed $1M in initiation fees in 2023, because the new membership category process took longer than we originally planned, initiation fees will fall short of plan As a reminder, initiation fees go towards capital expenditures To be prudent, the team has halted new capital projects for Q2 and Q3.

We are now a few months removed from the new membership category introductions. The Board is carefully monitoring our progress with membership every month and making adjustments based on recommendations from Committees along the way. On the positive, we now have a waitlist for our Social Membership. We have also added 30 new Dining Members beyond those previous Social Members who opted to convert to Dining. We have also welcomed 16 Proprietary Members through August 1st. This matches all of 2022 total but is trending shy of our original plan for the year of 36. Some members expressed fear that the golf course and driving range would be full with new member additions. Bryan will address the numbers more specifically, but so far, that has very clearly NOT happened. As I type my message Thursday evening, Saturday’s tee-sheet has plenty of opportunities to enjoy Sahalee’s High Heavenly Ground - even on a Saturday in peak summer conditions:

Sahalee’s National Membership has had limited interest and so far, hasn’t taken off as expected. Part of this takes time for word to get out. The KPMG Championship should help in this regard. I encourage all members to let their friends and colleagues from across the country know about this new offer. While several Sahalee alumni have expressed interest, so far they have been reluctant to sign up. To ease the transition, this month the Board approved a recommendation from the Membership Committee whereby Sahalee Alumni who left the club after January 1, 2021, can signup as a National Member without paying a new Initiation Fee. Additionally, future resigning Proprietary Members can opt-in to the National Membership without an additional Initiation Fee – after their membership has sold. In both situations, members must meet the National Member qualifications, be in good standing, and go through the new member vetting process. And of course, there is a limited supply of available National Memberships.

To further build the Proprietary Membership pipeline, the Board also approved this month a “Fall in Love with Sahalee” promotional program at the recommendation of the Membership Committee. This program is very similar in nature to the “Trial Membership” offered many years ago. It will provide an opportunity for prospective members to try out Sahalee from September 1 through April 30th – paying a non-refundable $5,000 deposit as well as Proprietary Member monthly dues and F&B minimums When they Fall in Love with Sahalee, they can apply their $5,000 deposit towards a full-proprietary membership (assuming availability)

Please welcome these members when you see them around Sahalee:

Two new Proprietary Members: Robert Richmond and Dr James Wang and his wife Simone and family

Three new Junior Executive Members: Chris Lanoue, Deok Choi and Sun Min Chung, and Byn Rhee and spouse

Joohyn Lee

Three new family Dining Members: Oh family, Akella/Baker Family and Tyndell family.

August Business

A few items of note planned for August:

1) The PGA will be at Sahalee this coming week to begin detailed planning for the 2024 Championship. As a reminder, the exclusive Member-only window for tickets and volunteer positions will close soon with public access opening on September 12th.

2) A second Junior Executive Information session will be held to connect with those Jr. Executive Members who could not make the first session on short notice.

3) As discussed in the informational sessions held earlier this year, the Membership Committee is considering addressing structural changes to the Senior and Jr. Executive Memberships based on input from those members. Obviously, if there are significant financial implications, the Finance Committee will need to provide their input on the recommendation The Board of Directors looks forward to hearing and reviewing their recommendations

There is a lot of final planning underway to prepare the club for the Sahalee Player’s Championship on September 9th and 10th The collective team, driven largely by UW Boosters has been able to secure the needed funds from outside sources to make this truly one of the best collegiate events in the U S Members will be shocked at how professional this tournament will look and feel I’m also proud to share that with a significant boost from employer matching funds, the Sahalee Board Members have personally contributed $25,000 to the Championship. I wish to thank the Board members individually for their tireless support in this tournament and club and now for their financial contribution. Here’s to another incredible month with Member-Member tournaments and plenty of other great activities for the entire family. I hope to see you soon at the club!

Sincerely,

The Sahalee family warmly welcomes our new Golf Members!

Monthly Message from Leslie Ludlow, GM/COO

Dear Sahalee Family,

WOW! What a fantastic month July rounded out to be! While it is by far and away the busiest month of the year, the team blew just about everything out of the park with homerun after homerun On the topic of homeruns, the first major win of the month was with Major League Baseball’s outing the Monday of All-Star Week the morning of the homerun derby

That tournament set off what felt like an entire month of positive feedback coming in the direction of every department of the Club. Attendees at each event we hosted including the SWD Invitational, the Senior Club Championship, American Cancer Society, Social Putting Championship, Wine Tasting Night and finishing out with the SMD Invitational ALL had rave reviews of the course, the golf operations, and the F&B offerings In a month that didn’t offer any breathing room, every team member stepped up and showed what Team Sahalee can do together

Now that we are just over midway through the year, the financial picture is becoming much more in focus. Currently, we are pacing slightly behind plan with a projected revenue miss of .3% behind budget. One of the biggest factors in our projections is a miss in membership dues revenues. While the plan was on the aggressive side, we also got a later than projected start to initiatives. To date in 2023, we have sold 69 unique memberships plus another 39 upgrades across all categories. Even with these fantastic numbers, we are still trailing our membership plan by roughly $12,000 per month. This figure is included in the aforementioned total projected YE miss.

To mitigate our misses, we are cutting costs where appropriate and tracking labor closely. That said, the BIGGEST thing we can do is drive membership. Deann has taken a very proactive outreach approach, executing on sales & marketing plans that have been mostly new to Sahalee. While this has certainly shown traction, our number one source for new members is our current members. We have an incredible referral program this year that significantly incentivizes members for ALL joining referrals, including the possibility of not paying dues for a year! Special kudos to Karishma Kiri who has had SEVEN referrals join to date!!!

There is an added incentive for Proprietary referrals where by 10% of the initiation fee paid is credited to the referring member This is currently a $5,000 bonus for referring a Proprietary Member! If every one of our members found just one person to join any one of our fantastic membership opportunities, we would have a waitlist of people wanting to belong in every single category So, who might you know that would enjoy life more with us here at the High Heavenly Ground?

On Saturday, July 29th the entire Sahalee team enjoyed a celebration together to honor the Team Members of the Quarter. We enjoyed time together at an all-team breakfast where smiles and laughs were abundant, with camaraderie felt by all. The focal point of the morning was revealing the Team Members of the Quarters. One team member from each department of F&B, Golf, and Agronomy is selected as the Team Member of the Quarter by a secret ballot and vote of the Leadership team. The winners receive a certificate, a personal letter from me, and $250 in cash. A big congratulations to Laura Kraft- Golf, Kristin Soltero- F&B, and Humberto Maradiaga- Agronomy. Be sure to give them a high five the next time you see them!

The end of July signals Sahalee rounding second base and heading into third as the heart of the season. In baseball/softball, doubles and homeruns are far easier to hit than triples because you really need to sprint that additional 60/90 feet to get from second to third after already pushing hard through the first two bases. Such is the case as we look at August. While there is so much behind us in June & July by way of holidays, member social programming, major tournaments, and outside events, there is still a VERY big month ahead.

In August, we have both of our Member Member Tournaments, Club Championship week, Raven’s Camp, Solheim Cup, TWO live music nights, Wine Tasting, and Prime Rib Night as well as hosting the PGA for a week, several private member celebrations and two outside tournaments. As a former athlete, I can tell you when you are trying to leg out that extra base, hearing the crowd cheer you on gives you a little extra burst of energy. So, if you experience one of our fantastic team members doing a great job or providing you with exceptional service, let them know. I can guarantee that they are working hard to make your experience as wonderful as possible, hearing your appreciation will give them that additional push to make it to third base!

As always, please continue to let us know how we can make your experience even better for you, your family, your guests, and your friends! July was a fantastic month, and we are looking forward to carrying all the fantastic momentum that has been created to help propel Sahalee to an incredible August!

Cheers!

Sips at Sahalee

Sahalee Members,

I wanted to share with you the spread in a local real estate magazine done on the Sips at Sahalee event in June. You will find it on pages 43 & 44. This is a great example of an advertorial where we can share information about the Club without crossing the line in advertising for memberships. While there was a cost to the event itself, this spread was at no cost to the Club.

We will be continuing to leverage these types of opportunities throughout the fall and spring to spread awareness in the local community as well as National platforms as they become available.

GREAT job to both Deann and Sarah for organizing such a great event! Deann further doubling down on getting this published just shows why she is so FANTASTIC at what she does!

Letter From Bryan Nicholson, PGA Director of Golf

Normally, I would start an August article talking about the “dog days” of summer. However, thus far in 2023, we have certainly been blessed to have an incredible stretch of glorious spring and summer weather which has made the golf course simply phenomenal to enjoy. Please don’t tell the rest of the country about our neck of the woods while they are sweltering in the summer heat. For once, we don’t have much to chirp about in the weather department, and the condition of the course is simply fantastic as a result.

What an incredible month we’ve just finished at the Club, and I’m incredibly proud of the entire Sahalee team for their dedication and execution throughout this very busy time.On the heels of the annual Men’s Invitational, the energy and excitement throughout the entire month has been palpable with our members and invited guests. From the Men’s Chapman, Men’s & Women’s Invitationals, and our annual Putting Championship, we have delivered a terrific month of member competitions. In addition to the member events, the Sahalee team has executed two highly successful large non-member events with the MLB All-Star Golf Classic, and the Washington Golf Classic supporting the American Cancer Society. The comments from the MLB Executives were extraordinary about their partnership with Sahalee, and they were raving about the amazing day to showcase the best of golf and service in the Northwest!

A special congratulations to our Invitational Champions from this past month! Our 2023 Women's Invitational, "Partners in Crime" was an absolute smash! We were thrilled to have such a great group of ladies together for incredible weather, stellar golf, and the camaraderie of great friends Congratulations to Ericka Nash and Cheryl Breidenbach for capturing the NET title, and Sue Ursino and Jane Harris for their fine play to win the GROSS title At the Men’s Invitational, it was back-to-back for Nelson Yu and his partner George Neffner Only 3 teams of the 20 in the Kent Martin Final 9 were able to score below a net 40, with only Yu and Neffner breaking par Well played to all our Champions!

This month, we have another busy stretch at the High Heavenly Ground! We will crown our new Men’s, Women’s, and Junior Club Champions, Men’s, and Women’s Member-Member Champions, and also host our SWD Fall Field Day! Participation from across our entire membership in our golf events remains very solid, but if you have not yet participated in a golf event at the Club this year, please consider joining us for one of these great gatherings. I think you’ll find that the member camaraderie is exceptional and is a lot of fun! Our Sahalee Player’s Championship is just around the corner, and we will have much more to publicize about this event as we approach the relaunch of this event from September 8th – 10th. We have an incredible field that is going to assemble for this Championship, including the US Junior Amateur Champion, several players in the Top 10 of PGA Tour U, and multiple players ranked inside the Top 50 amateur golfers in the world. Our golf course will be in spectacular condition to host this Championship, and we look forward to challenging these top ranked golfers. As a reminder, the individual champion will receive a PGA Tour exemption to the Fortinet Classic at Silverado outside Napa that same week!

We are still in need of some volunteers throughout the weekend of September 9th & 10th and currently have the following positions open:

• Saturday AM Round – 8 Ball Spotters

• Saturday AM Round – 24 Standard Bearers

• Saturday PM Round – 18 Ball Spotters

• Saturday PM Round – 24 Standard Bearers

• Sunday AM Round – 12 Ball Spotters

• Sunday PM Round – 24 Standard Bearers

This is a great opportunity to be up close to some of the best amateur golfers in the world. If you have any interest, we kindly ask that you click on the link below to register or drop Kim Shek & myself a friendly email with the time and position you would be interested in helping us with.

Shifting gears, I thought I would share an answer to the question about “taking your game on the road. ”Can you go on a different course and play well? There are a lot of golfers that generally think the more difficult your home course, the easier it will be to take your game on the road and play somewhere else. Through the GHIN system, and Arcoss Golf, we can track this information!

To evaluate how golfers performed on average, score differentials were used for the subset of golfers that played a minimum of 30 rounds annually. Differentials are calculated using attributes about the course, such as slope and rating. For example, if you shot an 81 from the back tee at Sahalee, and a 78 from the 6000-yard tees at Jackson Park, that 81 is a MUCH better score even though it is 3 shots higher. Using the differential as a measure of performance will allow us to control that difference in difficulty.

Upon review of all the statistical data:

• Golfers that play at an easy home course have a harder time taking their game on the road

• Golfers that play at a difficult home course have an easier time taking their game on the road

• The better the player, the more likely they will be able to successfully take their game elsewhere

I'm not suggesting how to pick your next partner for next year’s member/guest, but I would strongly encourage you to find someone with a bogus handicap….such as a 15 handicap that can play like a 3. Just kidding. :) The way the numbers shake out, your best partner will be someone that plays at a very difficult home course AND has a lower handicap. They are much more likely to be able to take their game on the road from the numbers!

Get out and enjoy this beautiful summer weather and our fabulous golf course! See you on the 1st tee!

SPC Update

The Sahalee Players Championship (SPC) is the Men’s College event that Sahalee will be hosting on an annual basis starting in September 2023. Co-Hosted by UW Men’s Golf and Sahalee, the SPC will be one of the best fields in College Golf. The 2023 field includes Arizona, Arizona State, Duke, Illinois, Oklahoma State, Pepperdine, Stanford, Texas, USC, Wake Forest, Texas Tech, and Washington

TOURNAMENT SCHEDULE:

Friday, September 8th – Official Tournament Practice Round for Teams, and Opening Ceremony Event (Open to Members and Volunteers)

Saturday, September 9th – First and Second Round Competition – All day Sunday, September 10th – Final Round Competition

Tournament Update – Countdown to September 2023

The SPC is just over 1 month away! Below are some highlights as the tournament approaches:

1. PGA Tour Event exemption to the Individual winner of the 2023 SPC. The top Individual player from the 72 players competing at the SPC this year will complete their round on Sunday and take a flight to Northern California as a participant in the 2023 Fortinet Championship on the PGA Tour. This elevates the SPC as one of only 3 NCAA tournaments that offer a professional exemption to the winner

2 Volunteers – We still need a few Walking Scorers, Standard Bearers, Forecaddies For general Volunteer questions or interest, please contact Kim Shek. Volunteers will receive a uniform and select other benefits during the tournament in addition to the opportunity to meet and get up close and personal with the players.

3. Sponsorship Update – There are sponsorship opportunities available for the SPC, that include logo promotion, golf experience with the SPC players, private hospitality suites, and a private golf outing at Sahalee. Additionally, for those of you who are UW fans/boosters or Tyee members – you can contribute to the SPC via the UW and have your contributions count towards Tyee points. If you or your company (or any company you know) are interested in Sponsorship opportunities with the SPC - please contact Chris Grusz, or Bryan Nicholson.

2018 was a phenomenal year for the SPC. Our defending Champion was future PGA Tour star Sahith Theegala. Unfortunately for Sahith, he was nursing an injury during the summer college offseason and was unable to defend his championship. However, the field in 2018 had many high profile and highly ranked players including a superstar incoming freshman to the University of Texas – Cole Hammer, and a young Australian - Min Woo Lee. Cole was a high school phenom after qualifying for the US Open at Chambers Bay as a 15-year-old. Min Woo, whose sister is top 10 ranked women’s superstar Minjee Lee, had a great amateur resume including a near miss as a 17-year-old at the 2017 SPC. Min Woo had the spotlight on him upon arriving at the High Heavenly Ground, and we were all curious to see how he would handle the press, attention, etc. He was fantastic in how he held himself with everyone at the event. His charisma was obvious to all those who spent time with him that week, but he left the crowd in awe with two feats: 1) During the Long Drive Championship – hitting multiple drives off the back fence of the Practice Range from a mat on the edge of the patio (See picture), and 2) His “Stingers”! Little did we know back then that his “Stinger” 4 irons would become shots that to this day are still viewed thousands of times on YouTube (look up Min Woo Lee Stinger at Sahalee!). Min Woo has since moved on to an incredible professional career, and what looks like many majors in his future at the youthful age of 24. He has won two Rolex Series events on the DP World Tour, had 3 top 10’s in majors and is currently ranked #45 in the World.

Which future superstars will you see at the SPC this year?

Of the participating schools, the makeup of players likely to be playing this year at Sahalee will be:

• 2 Players who competed in this year’s Open Championship at Royal Liverpool, and 6 players that competed in the US Open at LACC

• 12 Players who are currently ranked top 100 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking

• Teams attending the SPC have 22 of the top 100 ranked players in the NCAA Individual rankings from last year.

• 10 of the 12 teams participating in the SPC this year finished the year ranked in the top 30.

Mark your calendars for the SPC in early September… it is going to be amazing! Thanks for reading and hope to see you all spectating or volunteering with the SPC.

Sincerely,

KPMG Women’s PGA Player Spotlight

This month, we are profiling the hottest player in professional golf, 29-year-old Celine Boutier from France! Boutier started playing golf at an early age of just 7 years old, and her love of the game led to a collegiate scholarship at Duke University. During her amateur career, Boutier helped the Blue Devils win a National Championship in 2014, while becoming the NCAA player of the Year. In 2015, she was ranked as the #1 Amateur golfer in the world for most of the year, and then later turned Pro following graduation in the summer of 2016.

The journey to the LPGA Tour went through the developmental tours for Celine. In 2017, Boutier captured two wins on the Symetra Tour as well as eight top-10 finishes to secure her LPGA Tour Card. Boutier also played several events on the Ladies European Tour in the early part of her professional career, winning the Sanya Ladies Open. Over her career, she has amassed 13 professional victories on various worldwide tours.

Currently, the #3 ranked player in the world, and a lock to play in her third Solheim Cup later this year, Celine won her first major at the Evian Championship by six strokes over Brooke Henderson last month. What made the victory extra special for Celine is that the Evian is contested annually in her home country of France On the heels of the Evian victory, Celine won the Women’s Scottish Open for her third LPGA Tour victory just this season! With over $2 million in earnings and 6 top-10 finishes this year, Celine is having a season to remember. Celine is one to keep your eye on here at Sahalee next June!

Learn to Curve the Golf Ball Ryan Benzel

In my newest video, I talk about Learning to Curve the golf ball. This can be a simple process to learn with a little time and effort on the practice tee. You will also find this extremely helpful when navigating the trees around Sahalee!

First, you must identify your TARGET LINE (TL)…the line from your ball to your intended target. Next, you are working to create your START LINE (SL) to be to the right for a draw / left for a fade of your TL. Adjust your body to align parallel to your SL with a clubface still square to your TL. The clubface will be ‘closed’ for a draw and ‘open’ for a fade in relation to your SL. Finally, swing normal to your aligned SL and watch the ball curve!

Please connect with me if you want to add this to your game or refine what you already know. Email to setup a lesson at ryan.benzel@sahalee.com

Turf Talk with Charlie

What a month July was on the golf course(s) at Sahalee! Perfect summer weather with highs in the mid 70’s to mid 80’s and only one day of measurable precipitation produced perfect conditions for numerous tournaments and events. The month was highlighted by our Women’s and Men’s Invitationals both of which had firm and fast conditions for fun and challenging competition. Our dedicated turf care team continues to go above and beyond, and I’d like to congratulate them for showcasing Sahalee’s course(s) at their best in July!

KPMG Countdown

With less than a year to go prior to Sahalee hosting our second KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, golf course and facility preparation is already underway. To present our outstanding course at its very best on the world stage, numerous off-season projects and course detailing will be completed through the upcoming fall, winter, and spring Items to be address include storm-water retention ponds, tee complexes and retaining walls, deteriorating cart path areas, mowing contours, yardage monuments, wood chip areas and landscapes, and many other facility details These improvements will set Sahalee up for a great championship and benefit our members and guests both before and after the 2024 event

SPC and Fall Aerification

With the new Sahalee Players Championship coming up on September 9th and 10th, we are excited to host some of the top collegiate programs in the NCAA featuring many of the top ranked amateurs in the world. This new event will impact our fall aerification schedule which is now set to begin one week later than it has in years past.

Beginning on Monday September 11th, fall aerification this year will take place over three weeks with three closed Mondays on 9/11, 9/18, and 9/25. The projected schedule of events during fall aerification is as follows:

Week 1 (9/11-9/15) – Dryject and verticut select fairway, tee, and approach areas.

Week 2 (9/18-9/22) – Solid tine aerification of greens, approaches, and tees.

Week 3 (9/25-9/29) – Solid tine aerification of fairways and core aerification of all roughs

See you on the course, Charlie

A Note from our SWD Captain

As I write this, we’re busy preparing for our August events. Next up is one of our most attended, “Member/Member” Last year we had 52 playing and we already have 50 signed up so I expect to set another record Paula Miller and Trina Kain have a great event planned for us If you haven’t signed up yet, grab a partner and join in! Need a partner? Call Laura in the Pro Shop and she’ll help find one for you

The Club Championship is also this month, the second of two combined with the Mens and Junior Division and should prove to be a fun 3-day match play event

Captains Cup is the only tournament which spans our entire season Having almost doubled our participants from 2022, it’s exciting to see so many playing The second matches are almost completed, with winners going into their finals in August & September

To finish out August, Mary Love Mattox and Sonja Grusz are conspiring with Laura Kraft to make Fall Field Day a new adventure: 3 Queens and an Ace! Details will be coming out soon and I expect another bursting field of fun for all with some new competitions in store for us.

Our picture wall in the ladies locker room is bursting with 70 smiling faces and a great way to learn names. I’ve received many positive comments and expect to have more pictures completed soon!

See you on the links!

Way to go ladies!

Sahalee Women’s Golf Team News

I have finally decided to add another exercise to my “pre-golf” warmup Tomo Ratzlaff knows how to get her game in shape by doing yoga before her match. Tomo shot a cool 78 at Glen Acres to help bring our team to victory. Michelle Hood was one stroke behind with a 79. Thank you to Karen Ganey, Eleanor Devlin, Jane Fung and Patty Denton who stepped in to fill the team roster. We have one more match before our season finishes in August, and it looks like we will once again bring home the trophy! Sahalee should be proud of their Women’s Golf Team. Great job ladies!
