PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE FROM NORMAN CHEUK This is my first Tom Tom as Board President, following in the footsteps of Scott Heydon, and I am excited for the year ahead.

I want to take a moment to recognize the significant amount of time, effort, and energy Scott has put in over the last two years as Club President. Whether in driving significant updates to our bylaws, championing the adoption of new membership categories, or welcoming back the Sahalee Players Championship, Scott led with humility and grace in making Sahalee a better place for all of us. I couldn’t be more appreciative of his service to the club.

First, the golf.

2024 will be a big year for golf, both for Sahalee and the greater Puget Sound region.

In June, we will host the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, marking the return of major championship golf to the PNW and an opportunity to re-introduce the world to our updated and outstanding course. I couldn’t be happier that Sahalee has been chosen a second time to host this prestigious championship. The Championship Tournament Director, Tyler Dion, has been working closely with the Sahalee KPMG executive committee and the PGA to make this a stellar event that we can all be proud of.

I’ve heard from many fellow members who are excited about the KPMG. It’s not often that we get to watch the top women professionals play our home course. As a club that voted overwhelmingly in favor of hosting the event, I want to ask you to be generous with your time as a volunteer and your dollars as you consider buying tickets.

These areas are the most important factors for a successful Championship. Thank you in advance for your support.

After a summer of great golf and member events, the Sahalee Player’s Championship will return in September. This is a signature Sahalee event in partnership with the University of Washington is fast becoming one of the nation’s top college golf tournaments. This will be a great opportunity to welcome back the top amateur men’s golfers and to witness elite collegiate competition.

Secondly, I’d like to share what your Board is currently working on as well as our activities and priorities for the year ahead.

Looking Forward At the end of January, the Board held its annual retreat, at which we did a deep dive into our long-term goals for the Club and key strategies for achieving them. The Board met here in Seattle for 3-days and you’ll hear more from me about these goals, but as a “teaser” we were focused on the future…Sahalee 2030.

A Board priority this year, in partnership with our General Manager/COO, Leslie Ludlow, is to continue improving the consistency and quality of our dining program. We have received lots of very helpful feedback from members and staff. We understand that dining is a critical area of opportunity and an amenity that Club members value highly. In working with Leslie, I am aware that significant progress is already being made in improving the dining experience. I am confident that we will be able to restore what we all as members expect from our club.

Jacob Metcalf Dear Sahalee Members, The course is open, and we are glad to have you back. In 2024, we're making significant strides in the kitchen, focusing on cleanliness, health, safety, improved ingredients, techniques, and elevated plate presentation. I'm thrilled about the ongoing changes and excited about what's to come.

I bring a wealth of experience from various fields to enhance your dining experience. Growing up in Ketchikan, Alaska, I am well-acquainted with preparing top-level fish dishes from the Pacific. As a certified butcher, I can also handle in-house meat fabrication and aging. Over my 19 years in professional kitchens, I've had the privilege of working with renowned chefs like Shannon Galusha, Scott Simpson, Sean Langan, Cameo McRoberts, and Kathy Casey.

Cooking has been my passion from day one. I enjoy creating diverse dishes by combining flavors and techniques from around the globe, all while appreciating simple classic comfort food. My goal is to bring this experience and passion to you, the members.

We strive for perfection, understanding how difficult it is to attain. I believe in cooking with love and having fun in the process. A joyful team directly translates to exceptional service and quality, leading to memorable experiences. I'm open to suggestions, value feedback, and look forward to meeting each of you in the coming months.

LETTER FROM PGA DIRECTOR OF GOLF

Bryan Nicholson I hope all our Sahalee families enjoyed a safe, healthy, and energizing holiday season! Squarely into the throes of this New Year, we are eagerly looking ahead to this exciting new season!

What an incredible time to be a member of our Sahalee community. This will be a historic year at the Club, as we welcome the golf world back to the High Heavenly Ground by hosting our 4th major, the Women’s PGA Championship. Coupled with inviting back the top men’s collegiate golf programs for the 26th edition of the Sahalee Players Championship later this summer, the year will feature strong and stellar competition on our fairways. These impressive championships coincide with a robust member golf event calendar that features events and opportunities to connect with your club in so many other ways. I’m excited just writing about this, and I look forward to diligently working with our teams to cultivate the very best golf experience of the Northwest!

Last month, I foreshadowed some of our departmental operations goals for the 2024 season. I’d like to take this opportunity to share some of those with the Sahalee membership, so that you will see our commitment to continuous improvement while refining the golf experience at the Club. In 2023, 75% of our membership participated in at least one golf event throughout the season. In 2024, we are working to improve this to 80%member participation at the Club. Keep in mind that just three seasons ago we were below 60%-member engagement in golf events. This is an important goal for the Golf Committee and the staff to achieve because it’s a direct reflection upon the diversity and type of events on our golf calendar (competitive and social), the desire for our membership to connect with others at the club, and the level of execution in which the events operate.

In 2024, my team is developing a robust golf instruction program that will invite everyone to think about improving their game in the new season. This year, we are introducing Operations 36 to our programming, and I’m very excited to integrate this within our team. This proven developmental program has had tremendous success on a national level at many peer facilities and focuses on golfer development.

Through skill progression and on-course performance, students will achieve success by scoring 36 or less for 9 holes. This program is an outstanding way to introduce someone to the game of golf or help to refine player skills. We will be using Operations 36 both for junior golfers and for adult programming. In addition to Operations 36, we have several other group instructional platforms that I’m very excited about and we will soon be sharing with you. From women’s clinics, short game clinics, speed training, and full swing efforts, there is an opportunity for everyone to connect with our tremendous team of PGA Professionals at Sahalee.

On the retail front, we are buzzing as a team with being recognized for our efforts through the PGA of America (Western Washington Private Facility of the Year) and being awarded the Platinum Award (Top 100 Golf Shops) from the Association of Golf Merchandisers. In 2024, we are already starting a campaign to recognize member birthdays with additional discount opportunities in the golf shop! Further, the team is working together on several special trunk show opportunities to connect you with the best brands in the world of golf. The team will also be very active on social media (Instagram @shopsahalee) with information and updates on all things that are ongoing inside the golf shop throughout the year. We will have everything to make you look great both on and off the course!

This upcoming year, the golf professional team will be hosting multiple member golf trips both domestically and internationally. These opportunities to travel together with fellow friends or family from the Club create memories that will last a lifetime. Our destinations in 2024 include Bandon Dunes and the home of golf in Scotland. Both “links” golf destinations are a different style of golf than we play everyday with our Parkland style home course. I look forward to sharing the heritage of the game with over 40 members later this summer with our journey across the pond. These member trips are an amazing opportunity to share your love of the game with peers, and you almost always connect with someone you may not know as well, ultimately making friends for a lifetime. My team is already working on 2025 opportunities which will include a trip to Ireland and a tropical destination, so please stay tuned for more information later this year.

In 2024, we will be furthering our efforts with sustainability, and we will aim to reduce the use of plastics around the club. We currently offer bottled water in single use bottles in multiple locations throughout the club. In the coming months, we will be working to reduce our dependence of bottled water and encouraging members to consider using a reusable and refillable vessel for drinking water from our water dispensers. These units are currently inside the clubhouse and on the golf course near our restroom facilities. More information on this transition and program will be released very soon, but this is a substantial initiative that will help us to reduce the significant amount of plastic waste that we currently experience daily at the Club.

We are actively working on a comprehensive “Sahalee Golf Guide” that will contain all the information for the new season, including instructional programming, tournament & event calendars, junior golf programming, retail programming, and other exciting pieces of information. We will share this in a PDF with the membership in March!

I’m already brimming with excitement thinking about this 2024 season, and my team and I look forward to serving you!

Next up to host the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, Sahalee Country Club!

2024 is our year, and I am elated to lead Sahalee’s fourth Major Championship. Here are some updates on the immense progress we’ve made: Volunteers: Last month I asked you to consider helping with several key roles, with a special focus on the opportunity we have to own the Marshal positions on the 1st and 18th holes of the Championship. If you have yet to register to be part of the Sahalee Marshal Hole Program, please click HERE . Thank you, Sahalee, for stepping up to the challenge – we are on the cusp of filling these prestigious roles!

In December, we surpassed the 700-volunteer mark. Thanks to the efforts of Bryan and Leslie, we also secured all the necessary local club commitments to fill the remaining Marshal holes.

As a result, we expect to be near 900 within the next 45 days once all local clubs have their members register. That puts us on track for our goal of 1,100 volunteers.

Hospitality Sales: We are above 70% of our corporate hospitality goal, with only a few experiences remaining.

There is only one all-inclusive VIP table for the week in the Runyan Room, and 3 open groups in the Pro-Am. If you, or someone you know, is considering one of these experiences, the time to act is now. I do not expect it to last past early February. Marketing & Promotions: You will start to see promotional efforts for the Championship kick off in the local market soon. The PGA’s PR partner will be working with local media, social media, and area sports organizations to promote our championship. Additionally, Bryan and I will be doing some speaking engagements for the Bellevue and Sammamish Chambers of Commerce. If you are a part of a business organization like these, we would love to give a presentation about the Championship.

KPMG WOMEN’S PGA PLAYER SPOTLIGHT

ur countdown to the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship is now just 5 short months away! As we continue our road to this major championship, player introductions with some of the top ranked players in the field continues!

This month, we are pleased to bring you a profile of Atthaya Thitikul! Atthaya started her golf journey in her home country of Thailand where she was born, and at 6 years old when her father presented her the choice: golf or tennis.

After some research via YouTube, she chose to learn the game of golf, and thus, her athletic success story was born!

As an amateur golfer, Atthaya made her first appearance in an LPGA tournament in 2017 at the young age of 14. That same year, she got her first win at the Ladies European Thailand Championship via the European Tour making her the youngest person ever to win a professional golf tour event at 14 years, 4 months and 19 days old. She continued to play in professional events as an amateur through 2019 gathering several successes and ultimately earned the #1 spot in the Women’s World Amateur Golf Rankings. Playing professionally since 2020, Attaya has won 15 professional tournaments globally!

Thitikul has had a stellar last few months, and is currently ranked 9th in the Rolex World Golf Rankings!

While Atthaya did not compete in the 2016 KPMG at Sahalee, she’s already been spotted playing a practice round and working on her game here at the High Heavenly Ground this past summer. We look forward to welcoming her back and cheering her on this upcoming June!

2024 is upon us, and hopefully our winter weather is in our rear view mirror and we can look forward to Spring and the start of golf season. I encourage all members to use the early months of the new year to improve your golf game.

This Spring, we can find an aspect of your golf game you can improve before our core season arrives. This may be in your full swing, chipping/pitching, bunker play, putting, or your on course approach, having a goal to improve just ONE aspect of your game is very achievable.

Together, we can use our Swing Room and video capabilities to work on your full swing, we can get out and improve your wedges, or we can really dive into improving your putting in the Swing Room using Quintic Ball Roll. Lessons and coaching can bring you more enjoyment with your golf game and more purpose to your practice.

TURF TALK

February Turf Talk Through the first month of the 2024 season, the Agronomy team has been hard at work executing projects and preparing for what will be a very exciting year on the course(s) at Sahalee Country Club. A deep freeze in the PNW closed the golf course(s) for 10 consecutive days during the middle part of January, but with now longer days and warmer temperatures it feels as though we are moving in the right direction as we reach the midpoint of winter at Sahalee.

Declining and Hazardous Tree Removals In January, Sahalee’s contracted arborists worked to identify and remove approximately 25 dead and declining trees throughout the golf course(s) and property. These declining trees exhibited basal rot and extensive defoliation, increasing their likelihood of losing limbs or falling at unexpected times. Following the removal of these hazardous trees, stump grinding and returfing was performed to restore all affected areas.

The firewood rounds from these tree removals are stored along the right side of the driving range and are available for members to take as they please.

Timber Feature Restoration Throughout the golf course(s), wooden fixtures including staircases, cart path curbing, and retaining walls exhibited varying stages of disrepair entering this winter. As part of the Agronomy team’s efforts to beautify the campus and eliminate safety concerns entering the 2024 season, the restoration of these features is an ongoing project. Areas completed include the removal of the retaining wall at 1 North tee, the replacement of the cart path curb at 1 North green, and the rebuild of the stairway at 2 North tee.

Next up is restoration of the retaining wall around the forward tee on 8 North and refurbishment of the (2) staircases at 8 South tee.

Ready To Go For 2024 One of the things we’re most excited about this year is our Agronomy team which has added multiple turfgrass students and young golf course management professionals to work alongside our experienced turf care team in the 2024 season. For many, the 2024 Women’s PGA Championship will be their first professional major at Sahalee while others on our team will be participating in their fourth major here. I personally could not be more excited to be a part of this team as we begin another historic year at Sahalee!

SWD Captain Julie Reid The Women of Sahalee gathered in mid-December for a Holiday luncheon. It was great to connect with women we haven't seen in a while, including some women who are cherished past members. Sue Allison even led us in a Christmas Carol. Thanks to all who participated.

We continue with our indoor simulator sessions on Thursdays from 4:00-6:00. It is a fun evening, and possibly a little bit humbling for some of us, but the fun dominates.

These sessions will continue during the temporary closure of the club.

Please look for an email from the Pro Shop with instructions on signing up.

The sessions are limited to a maximum of 8, so make sure you sign up early.

The golf calendar for 2024 has been published. With the KPMG and the SPC being held this year, some of the event dates have been accelerated, so make sure you mark all of the SWD events on your calendar now so you don't miss out.
