I am at my wits end trying to work out how to handle a situation on my golf course which happens often.

When I am golfing with my husband and there are two groups on the tee-box, we are often invited to tee off first which is appreciated.

However, the male players in the other group are silent while my husband hits his tee shot but predictably start talking when I walk to the tee to address my ball.

It happened just this morning, silence for my husband teeing off but two guys started talking loudly in the middle of my back swing. I am wondering how other readers would react to this situation and if they have found a solution?

I will admit I was so angry today that I said to my husband the next time it happens I am going to say something to the men but would prefer to remain polite while getting my point across.

I am sure many women have come across this situation on the golf course. I find it particularly annoying as it can often ruin your tee shot although I am pleased to say today, I went on to

make my par despite the terrible shot due to the men chatting loudly.

I am a decent golfer and feel incensed that men cannot give the women the respect they deserve on the course.

I really enjoy the magazine.

Regards

Thank you, Reece, for your letter. I totally concur that it is a common courtesy to remain quiet when anyone is teeing off or playing any shot for that matter. I don’t however believe that this is a male/female issue but rather an unfortunate coincidence.

Perhaps a polite reminder that their talking is putting you off your tee shot could work. Alternatively, you could ask them directly why they feel it’s acceptable to talk while you tee off but not your husband.

Regards

Part 1 - How to perfect the basic chip

HOW TO PERFECT THE BASIC CHIP

If you want to improve your short game, here are a few tips to take to heart.

We will cover the basic setup and the five impact factors to turn your game around.

Setup

When setting up for a basic chip you need to focus on the following points:

1. Weight distribution.

When you address the ball, you need to position yourself so that +/-70% of your weight is on your front leg and the other 30% of your weight on your back leg.

2. Hand position.

Make sure your hands are pressed forward, in line with your left thigh (right handed golfers). You must keep your left arm and wrist straight during the shot. You should feel like your arms are riding along with your chest as you take the club back and follow through.

3. Ball position.

A big question that is asked is, where should the ball be positioned for a chip shot? This should either be in the middle or slightly forward in your stance.

4. Body position.

To correct your body position, make sure that your feet, hips and shoulders are aiming slightly left of your target (your landing zone/ hole), because of your hands being pressed towards your left thigh the clubface should be slightly open.

Always make sure your legs and hips are still

and stable throughout maintain a basic

5. IMPACT FACTORS when you hit

Now that we chipping, let’s can change your see if you could

FACTORS (Where is the ball going to go hit it?)

have covered the basic setup for let’s have a look at five impact factors, which your whole golf game (what you should could hit pause just before impact):

Path

swing path for a basic chip would be

When you use this swing path you should clubhead move outside of the target line to the the takeaway and backswing. An swing describes a path that a golf club is impacts the ball. When you swing from you are setting yourself up to be able to golf ball more.

2. The Angle of

Attack

Angle of Attack is the direction at which the club head is moving when it hits the ball. This means you are either hitting up on the ball, or hitting down on the ball.

A simple explanation - Angle means club direction. Attack means when contact with the ball. of attack

on the ball means that you have a steep attack. If your angle of attack is too steep, you distance because your shot will in most cases

When you hit a shallow chip shot, you are hitting up on the ball which can result in the ball coming low off the face or even thinning it, which results in a low trajectory.

3. Centredness of strike

There are 3 different strike points on a golf ball, namely, centre, heel and toe.

For maximum distance control and accuracy when chipping, we would always like to be striking the ball out the middle of the clubface, or as close to it as possible.

4. Club Face Alignment

Square to Target – try to keep the clubface aiming at your target on impact.

5. Speed

A common mistake that most amateur golfers make is using and changing the speed of their swing in order to control the distance. In chipping you want to keep a nice smooth and rhythmic swing to control the other 4 impact factors. Your distance control will come from the length of your swing and not the speed of it.

We hope this first part of our six part series will help you improve your short game as we go more in-depth in the next few issues.

John Collier Survey

CLUB CERTIFICATION AND THE OLYMPIC GAMES

Following the publication of the sixteenth John Collier Annual Survey in March, during August 210 golf clubs throughout South Africa were accredited with GOLD, SILVER or BRONZE good governance and environmental compliance level certification through the John Collier Survey.

All these clubs should be applauded, especially Blair Atholl Golf and Equestrian Estate for its achievement in becoming South Africa’s TOP CLUB.

Three factors underpin the achievement by all the clubs.

First, for showing compliance in terms of the governance principles of King IV.

Second, in that the survey shows that the clubs appreciate that none of them is an island, and for demonstrating the understanding that they are under scrutiny in all forms, and at all times.

The third and last factor, would be the acknowledgement that the legislative and compliance landscape is continually changing, and the need for appropriate measures to be put in place to manage this change.

One of our roles at JCS, is also to try and look around the corner in order to anticipate future risk.

In July 2024, Paris will host the Olympic Games, and while it is a wonderful exhibition of world sport, in preparation for these games, the IOC is setting new sustainability standards for the sporting world, including standards for golf, in order to help significantly reduce environmental impacts.

South African golfers will be representing the country in Paris, and importantly South Africa as a member of the International Olympic Movement, are bound to comply with the Olympic charter, policies, procedures and standards.

We should therefore, not be surprised to see these new standards percolating down through the South African golfing administrative structures to golf clubs, in the form of much stronger environmental compliance standards, and a requirement for clubs to pay more attention to good governance.

JAKE WHITE PRAISES PROACTIVE VODACOM ORIGINS OF GOLF SERIES

Elevating the profile of women’s sport has ticked all the boxes for the Blue Bulls rugby union, and Jake White, their Director of Rugby, expects it to do the same for the Sunshine Tour.

In August, the Sunshine Ladies Tour professionals were in the field alongside their Sunshine Tour male counterparts, making history by competing for the same R2 million prize money in the year’s first Vodacom Origins of Golf series tournament at Zebula Country Club.

White played in the two-day Vodacom Origins of Golf Pro-Am at Zebula, in which four of the Sunshine Ladies Tour professionals also played, and he said the success of the Bulls Daisies rugby team

in the Women’s Premier Division showed what can be achieved when resources and opportunity are given to sportswomen.

The unbeaten Bulls Daisies have enjoyed 11 consecutive bonus point wins as they head into the playoffs in rampant form. The Bulls union made the groundbreaking decision at the start of the season to employ the first fully-professional, contracted women’s squad in South African rugby, and White said they are reaping the benefits from this boutique group of rugby stars.

“What women’s rugby has done for the continued on page 14...

Bulls brand has been fantastic. They haven’t come close to losing and the team is so transformed, giving even players from the Eastern Cape tremendous opportunity. As the first professional women’s team in the country, they are so far ahead of everyone else and we want to make sure we stay ahead. It’s so nice to be at a union which is proactive and not reactive,” White said.

Playing in pro-ams provides the 2007 Rugby World Cup winning coach, ever the student of what makes top-class sports stars tick, to not only enjoy his love of golf and get his competitive juices flowing, but also enjoy the interaction with professionals to see what lessons he can use for his day job at Loftus Versfeld.

“Golf has been very kind to me over the last couple of years and I’m playing nicely. I also get to meet all these young golfers and it’s like coaching rugby players. Golf is also a really tough job and the margins are so small. I played here with a good pro in CJ du Plessis, who has won out here. Professional golf is pressure at its highest. In golf, if you don’t have a sponsor, how do you go to tournaments, pay for hotels, flights? For golfers, if they don’t make cuts, they don’t earn. It’s a different sort of pressure for them,” White, who plays off a nine handicap, said.

KNOW YOUR GOLF CLUB’S GENERAL MANAGER

Albert Clack - Club General ManagerRandpark Club

1. You have been in the Management and Hospitality industry for a long time, what made you choose this career?

I have been in the hospitality industry for just over 20 years now. I originally thought about becoming a chef but transitioned to management whilst studying. I enjoy creating a space where people can relax, unwind and build relationships. Through this journey I ended up in the golf industry and just fell in love with it.

2. Who has been your Biggest Mentor?

There is just so many to mention, I try and make a point to learn something from everyone. Where I need help, I generally migrate to people that are specialists in the subject who demonstrate an unwavering passion and knowledge. These last few years have been a tremendous learning curve and the support and guidance of the members of the General & Finance Committee has played a major part in my current successes achieved. A special word of thanks must go to Keith Jacobs, Chairman of the

Finance Committee who constantly challenges me to be better at everything I set out to do.

3. Describe a typical workday for you at Randpark?

Each day of the week has its own set of actions required. First thing in the morning, I confirm what my day looks like and what I must achieve by the end of the day. I generally arrive at work just after 7am after dropping my daughter at school. I go for a walk around the clubhouse, driving range and golf ops area where I get to engage with members and my team and highlight any areas of concern that require urgent action. I like to have a coffee with the greenkeeper during this time and catch up on news and feedback from the golf courses. From there, it is administration work, meetings and dealing with correspondence.

Midday, I take a breather, assess the morning achievements, and prioritize what requires urgent attention and what else remains for

the balance of the day. If time permits, I start preparations for the following day. From 16h30 to 17h30 / 18h00 you will find me walking through the Terrace bar and Baobab bar engaging with our club members and enquiring about their day, getting feedback from them on their golf experience at the club - course and clubhouse.

4. What are your biggest challenges with Randpark having two 18-hole championship golf courses and such a large membership base?

At Randpark Club we have 118 hectares of ground and a 4-story clubhouse. Keeping the facilities in pristine condition, whilst working within the budget we have set, is probably the biggest challenge we as a team face on a day-today basis.

5. With consumers already being careful on how they spend their money these days, what is your plan to attract people to Randpark?

We have recently partnered with Virgin Active Padel Club where they will be installing 4 double courts. Padel is one of the fastest growing sports and there is a massive demand from our community and members. I believe the addition of this new sport will give additional value to being a member of Randpark Club and further attract people to our club. Randpark Club is known for being social and Padel will form a key attraction for families and young professionals.

6. In your opinion, what factors contribute to excellent customer service and keeping your standards at such high levels?

Consistency is probably one of the biggest drivers for spend now, and ensuring you deliver and exceed your members’ and visitor’s expectations. Having the right people in the right positions and surrounding yourself with a team that can take service to the next level is

vitally important. This year we are really focusing on training and improving our team culture. Your team needs to feel part of the process and celebrate small wins as much as possible. Engaging with members and listening to their feedback is also a great way to understand the mood of your membership and what areas need a little bit more attention.

7. Do you still have short & long term goals? Absolutely, personally I am busy with my CCM through CMASA, which I aim to complete in the next 2 years. After this I am toying with agronomy or accounting, I suppose I have a bit of time to decide what’s next.

8. What do you enjoy doing in your free time? Spending time with my family outdoors, hiking and camping.

9. Do you still get time to play a round of golf?

I try and make a point to play once a month in our Mixed Open at the club, the rest of the time it’s my job to ensure everything runs as it should and our members and visitors get to experience 2 great golf courses in Johannesburg.

HUGE GLOBAL REWARDS FOR SUNSHINE TOUR PROS THIS SUMMER

The Sunshine Tour has announced a summer of world-class international golf that includes six co-sanctioned tournaments and their prime positioning within the newly announced Global Swing schedule of the DP World Tour, offering even greater opportunities and incentives. The Sunshine Tour also confirmed an increase in its minimum prize money throughout the other tournaments on its 2023/24 schedule.

The six Sunshine Tour and DP World Tour co-sanctioned tournaments will begin with the Joburg Open at Houghton Golf Club from 23-26 November 2023, followed by the Investec South African Open at Blair Atholl Golf and Equestrian Estate from 30 November to 3 December 2023, the Alfred Dunhill Championship at Leopard Creek from 7-10 December 2023, the AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open at the spectacular new La Réserve Golf Links from 14-17 December 2023, the SDC Championship (venue to be confirmed) from 29 February to 3 March 2024 and the Jonsson Workwear Open (venue to be confirmed) from 7-10 March 2024.

In addition to the current four European Challenge Tour events on the Sunshine Tour schedule, these six co-sanctioned tournaments will form part of the DP World Tour’s new Global Swing structure of its schedule which was announced today. The Global Swing will consist of an Opening Swing, International Swing, Asian Swing, European Swing and Closing Swing.

The first four co-sanctioned tournaments (the Joburg Open, Investec South African Open, Alfred Dunhill Championship and AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open) will fall under the Opening Swing. The SDC Championship and the

Jonsson Workwear Open will be grouped together with the International Swing.

Each Swing will have its own Order of Merit, with the leading professional at the conclusion of each Swing winning an extra $200 000 and, if already a member of the DP World Tour, an invitation into the DP World Tour’s next scheduled Rolex Series tournament and a spot in each of the DP World Tour’s Back Nine series of nine tournaments.

Upon the culmination of the Global Swing, the leading 10 professionals on the Race to Dubai Rankings will share in a $1 million bonus pool.

“This is going to be a summer unrivalled international golf on Sunshine Tour fairways, with world-class fields competing on some of our best golf courses and for major new incentives,” said Thomas Abt, Commissioner of the Sunshine Tour.

“Our alliance with the DP World Tour means we can keep strengthening the global pathway that the Sunshine Tour offers, and these new incentives will further boost our fields and offer immense value to our co-sanctioned events. With our tournaments forming part of both the Opening Swing and International Swing, it’s a double opportunity for our members to benefit from these opportunities.”

The Tour will also continue its tribute to the South African golf legacy of Gary Player, with the Gary and Vivienne Player Challenge and the Gary and Vivienne Player Invitational tournaments featuring prominently on its schedule in the build-up to the co-sanctioned events.

There are further incentives for the leading professionals at the end of this season.

The Sunshine Tour’s Order of Merit points ranking will now be known as the Order of Merit delivered by The Courier Guy, and the top three professionals at the end of the season will receive an added bonus, with R500

000 going to the first-place finisher, followed by R200 000 for second and R100 000 for third place. This will be on top of their season’s earnings.

Golf fans will be able to keep monitoring the progress of the top three vying for honours, with the leading three professionals set to have the official Order of Merit delivered by The Courier Guy logo displayed next to their names throughout the season on the official SuperSport broadcasts, while their caddies will also wear bibs displaying the logo and their players’ positions of first, second or third on the ranking.

SUNSHINE TOUR CELEBRATES GARY PLAYER’S LEGACY

Gary Player’s legacy within South African golf and that of his late wife Vivienne and their philanthropic efforts were celebrated on the Sunshine Tour at the Gary and Vivienne Player Challenge, which teed off at White River Country Club at the end of August.

The 54-hole tournament forms part of a strong tribute over the next few months on Player’s significant role within the South African game.

The winner (not available at the time of going to print) of the R2-million tournament as well as the next leading 26 professionals in the field will all secure a place in the prestigious Gary and Vivienne Player Invitational at Sun City in November, where a collection of

professional golfers, celebrities, sports stars and business leaders will come together to raise funds for The Gary and Vivienne Player Foundation.

And the Nedbank Golf Challenge, also played in November, will celebrate Player’s role in the launching of this iconic tournament.

“Vivienne and I were together for 72 years. I was blessed with the most wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She passed away in my arms, and her last words to me were, ‘Please make sure you keep our foundation going for these young children’,” said Player.

KRUYSWIJK BREAKS THROUGH ON CHALLENGE TOUR

Jacques Kruyswijk birdied his final two holes to claim a maiden European Challenge Tour title at the Dormy Open. Round four in Sweden was cancelled due to the weather conditions, meaning the tournament would be decided after 54 holes.

The South African was one of a number of competitors who returned to Askersunds Golfklubb on the Sunday to complete their third rounds after play was suspended due to heavy rain on the Saturday.

With just three holes left to complete, the 30-year-old was two strokes behind overnight leader Aron Zemmer. But after the Italian dropped two strokes, Kruyswijk finished par-birdie-birdie to claim the title by two shots as he signed

for a four under par 63 and a nine under total.

“Ecstatic. That’s the only word I can think of,” said Kruyswijk. “It’s been a long week for all of the players. We’ve had so much rain, the course was flooded and last night I knew I had some work to do, I was prepared to play 20 holes. I was thinking to just get into the clubhouse with a score but I played 17 fantastically and played 18 unbelievably. I’m very happy with my finish.”

“A three-time winner on the Sunshine Tour, with his last victory coming just a fortnight ago at the Vodacom Origins of Golf at Zebula, Kruyswijk has now set his sights on a return to the DP World Tour at the end of the season.

WHY TOUR ROOKIE ERIC COLE DROVE OVERNIGHT TO PLAY (AND WIN) A MINI-TOUR EVENT

But it’s perhaps a $20,000 winner’s check that means the most.

In a golf season that has been anything but conventional, Cole took one of the year’s most unconventional journeys – an overnight 480-mile drive from Connecticut to western Pennsylvania to play (and win) the final Frank B. Fuhrer Jr. Invitational, an event that once kept his career afloat.

After finishing T24 at the Travelers, his 10th straight week on TOUR, Cole embarked on a seven-anda-half-hour journey to play the Frank B. Fuhrer Jr. Invitational, a mini-tour event with significance that dates to his time in golf’s hinterlands.

Back in 2014, Fuhrer Jr. gave Cole a spot in the field. At the time, Cole was a struggling mini-tour player without much status to speak of. He paid the tournament entry fee on a credit card. He won. The $40,000 winner’s check provided a catalyst for his professional career. He paid off the entry fee and suddenly had a cushion for subsequent entry fees and the typical expenses of a mini-tour pro. Essentially, it allowed him to keep going. This marked the final edition of the event. Cole had played it every year since, and he was intent on seeing the streak through.

“Mr. Fuhrer passed away last year … this was the last year of his tournament, so I felt like it was a really important thing for me to be there and play in it,” Cole said. “It was cool to be part of the last edition of his tournament. To be there, one, and then to win the last edition of his tournament was awesome.”

MACNAB, MISTRY AND STREICHER NAMED FOR 2023 WATC

GolfRSA was delighted to announce that the country’s three top-ranked amateurs Caitlyn Macnab, Kajal Mistry and Megan Streicher will represent South Africa in the 2023 World Amateur Team Championships in Abu Dhabi in October.

The 30th women’s championship, which will be contested by 36 countries, will be played from 25-28 October.

The event will be played at Abu Dhabi Golf Club’s National Course, marking the first time that the World Amateur Team Championships will be played in the Middle East.

Streicher will be making her debut following a breakout first season at the University of North Carolina.

The Boland golfer not only led the Tar Heels with 14 rounds under par – six more than any other player on the team – but her stroke average of 73.33 was the seventh lowest by a Tar Heel in a season, and the lowest ever by a first-year student.

The former SA Women’s Stroke Play champion was the best finisher on the team in four of the last five tournaments of the season, and she brought that form home during the summer break to win the Individual Competition at the GolfRSA 72-Hole Women’s Team Championship in May. Macnab and Mistry return for duty

a third successive time. The pair finished in 15th position in France playing alongside Bobbi Brown, matching the result they achieved in their debut with Kaleigh Telfer in the 2018 edition in Ireland.

Macnab has distinguished herself as the number one player at Texas Christian University and currently ranks 34th in the World Amateur Golf Rankings. At the end of two years with the Frogs, the Serengeti golfer will start her third year at the University of Mississippi on the Ole Miss golf team.

The Serengeti golfer posted four top-5 finishes in 2022-23, including victory in the season-opening Schooner Fall Classic where she shot 10-under-par 200 and broke the school record for the lowest 54-hole score.

Her consistency not only earned her a second invitation to the prestigious Augusta National Women’s Amateur, where she finished ninth, but also a spot in the International Team at the 2023 Arnold Palmer Cup. Among a long list of accolades, she was named to the All-Big 12 team and earned an All-American honourable mention from the Women’s Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) for a second successive year after leading the Frogs with a stroke average of 71.97.

Mistry, who like Macnab achieved the rare SA Women’s Match Play and Stroke Play calendar double, has earned the nickname “birdie machine” at Arkansas University. She led Razorback Women’s Golf Team with 83 birdies in 10 events during the 2022 | 2023 season. The previous year, she knocked in 112 birdies in 11 tournaments. While pursuing her marketing degree, the Razorbacks No 1 notched season-best top five finishes in the NCAA Palm Beach Regional and the Moon Golf Invitational. She also held the lowest stroke average and best national ranking, which earned her a second successive start in the LPGA Tour’s Walmart NW Arkansas Championship in this year.

SILVER MEDAL THE LATEST IN LONG LIST OF LAMPRECHT ACHIEVEMENTS

to become the fourth South African to win the Amateur Championship.

Only 53 golfers have distinguished themselves as the Leading Amateur in The Open since the Silver Medal was introduced in 1949 and the 22-year-old Lamprecht was humbled to follow notables like José María Olazábal, Sir Michael Bonnalack, Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy.

“I had a look at the list last night, and it’s really nice to be part of history like that and engrave my name into history,” said Lamprecht.

Reigning Amateur Champion Christo Lamprecht added to South Africa’s illustrious history in The Open Championship when he became the country’s first Silver Medal winner in the 151st edition.

Setting records and making history is becoming something of a habit for Lamprecht.

He was just 16 years and 25 days old when became the youngest-ever winner of the South African Amateur Championship at the Humewood Links in 2017 – a record he still owns.

A year later he demonstrated maturity beyond his years at County Lowth to become the youngest champion, and the first foreign winner in the 76-year history of the East of Ireland Amateur Open Championship.

In 2019, Lamprecht and his fellow GolfRSA National Squad members Martin Vorster, Casey Jarvis and Sam Simpson fired a record-setting 41-under par winning total to win the Toyota Junior Golf World Cup in Japan and this year, it was the career-defining performance at Hillside GC where he beat Swiss golfer Ronan Kleu 3 & 2

“Hopefully there are many more to come,” said Lamprecht, the first player to win both The Amateur and the Silver Medal in the same calendar year since Italy’s Matteo Manassero in 2009 and Jin Jeong from South Korea in 2010.

“It has been a week with every bit of emotion felt, coming off a high on Thursday and just not having it the last three days. On Friday afternoon, after I shot 79, I was talking to Stewart Cink. He said he had only led a Major at the end of a round three times. To say I have done already at 22 is pretty cool.

“I am very hard on myself, and any good athlete needs to be, to an extent, but I am finishing the week with a smile. This week has given me a lot of motivation to work harder and keep on grinding. I have seen the next level and I really want to get there now.”

Amateur champion. Silver Medal winner at The Open.

He finished the 2022 | 2023 US collegiate season as the seventh-best amateur in the NCAA Division 1 and he started the week ranked third in official World Amateur Golf Rankings, equalling the highest mark any South African has hit since the rankings were introduced in 2007.

GARY WOODLAND TO UNDERGO BRAIN SURGERY

Gary Woodland has announced on social media that he will undergo surgery on September 18th to remove a lesion from his brain.

Woodland wrote in the post that he had been trying to treat the lesion, diagnosed “a few months ago,” with medication alone, but after consultation with specialists he decided to go in for an operation.

“I’m in good spirits with my family and team by my side and so thankful for the love and support of everyone,” he wrote.

The 39-year-old Woodland is a four-time PGA Tour winner, and most recently he captured the 2019 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach. He finished 94th in the recently completed FedExCup season, making 18 cuts in 24 starts with two top-10 finishes.

He also was a member of the victorious 2019 U.S. Presidents Cup Team.

Woodland did not give a timetable for his return.

“Thank you for your support during this time,” he wrote.

HOVLAND STORMS TO FEDEXCUP TITLE

Viktor Hovland played the best golf of his life in the final two weeks of the PGA Tour season, and it paid off with the biggest trophy of his career -- a FedExCup title along with the $18 million bonus.

Staked to a six-shot lead, Hovland didn’t flinch under a relentless challenge from Xander Schauffele. The 25-year-old Norwegian stayed on the attack and closed with a 7-under 63 for a five-shot victory at East Lake.

“It’s pretty surreal to be standing here right now,” Hovland said after receiving the silver FedExCup trophy. “I played basically my best golf the last two weeks and it couldn’t have happened at a better moment.”

Hovland capped off his best season with three victories. Even more staggering is that he played his final tournaments - the BMW Championship at Olympia Fields and the Tour Championship at East Lake, in 36-under par.

Schauffele made him work for that $18 million and got to within three shots with seven holes to play. Hovland ended the suspense with a 25-foot par putt on the 14th hole, and he put Schauffele away with a 10-foot birdie putt on the 16th.

Schauffele and Hovland put on a superb show. Playing in the last group, on a day that was delayed nearly two hours by thunderstorms, they had the best scores of the day.

The 63 by Hovland was the lowest Sunday score for a Tour Championship winner.

“I thought 62 would have let me get close to him,” Schauffele said. “He played unbelievably well. He made important putts and he’s just played like a champ.”

Hovland was ranked 2nd going into the Tour Championship, meaning he started at 8-under par. Hovland posted a 19-under 261 -- the same score as

www.sagolftrader.co.za September | October 2023 44

Schauffele, who started the tournament at 3-under par.

It was the second time in four years that no one scored better than Schauffele, and he left Atlanta without a trophy to show for it. Such is the nature of the FedExCup finale, and the importance of a strong season and a big performance in the two Playoffs events leading up to the Tour Championship.

“I’ll hold my head up high,” Schauffele said. “It was the most fun I had losing in quite some time. It’s such a weird feeling. I shot 62. I lost by five. Just kudos to Hovi. He played unbelievably well the last few weeks to get himself into this position and to really just put a cherry on top for himself and his team.”

Schauffele did everything he could. He was six shots behind when he left East Lake on the Saturday evening, knowing that his only hope was to put as much pressure on Hovland as he could over the front nine.

Schauffele shot 30. Hovland nearly matched him birdie for birdie, posting a 31 that included a key 15-foot par save on No. 2 after the two-hour delay from thunderstorms that slightly softened the East Lake turf.

Schauffele, for all his California chill, was simply relentless. He holed an 18-foot birdie putt on the par-3 11th hole and followed with a 12-foot birdie on the 12th, cutting the lead to three shots with seven holes to play. It felt like the margin was even smaller considering how well Schauffele was playing, and Hovland having missed three birdie chances from 10 feet or closer.

The putt that mattered came at the 14th, the toughest hole at East Lake. Hovland came up short of the green, about 100 feet from the flag, and his pitch

was weak and stopped just inside 25 feet from the hole.

He poured it in the heart and pumped his fist stronger than he had all day. The clincher was another pure short iron, this one to 10 feet on the 16th for birdie. At that point, the engraver went to work on the silver FedExCup trophy.

“When that putt went it, that was huge for momentum. Two shots with four holes to play is different than three shots, especially with 15 yet to play,” Hovland said, referring to the par-3 to a peninsula green. “After that, I just really relaxed.”

He closed with three straight birdies that only mattered for the margin of victory.

Now it’s a matter of how his peers judge his season. The PGA Tour player of the year was thought to be a two-man race between Masters champion Jon Rahm and his four wins and Scottie Scheffler with The Players Championship among his two wins and the No. 1 ranking from his remarkable consistency.

Hovland ended the season with wins at the Memorial and two FedExCup Playoffs events, including the one that mattered.

U.S. Open champion Wyndham Clark won the B-Flight, closing with a 65 to finish third, 11 shots behind. That was worth a $5 million bonus. Rory McIlroy had a 65 to finish fourth and collected $4 million, while Patrick Cantlay (66) was alone in fifth to earn $3 million.

Vodacom is also proud to announce the renewal of the Vodacom Origins of Golf series for a further three-years,” said Andisa Ntsubane, Managing Executive for Brand, Marketing and Sponsorships at Vodacom South Africa.

“The Vodacom Origins of Golf series remains a valuable tool for interaction with our customers as they share the fairways with the professionals, but also to meet our objectives of always making an impact in our communities.

“Since the start of this series in 2004, it has been closely aligned with our overall objectives of supporting the elite

international stage.”

“We are truly grateful to be able to look forward to another three years of a series that is unique in its pro-am offering and the experience it provides, and which truly embodies the ethos of Vodacom and the Sunshine Tour to deliver greatness on our fairways.”

For two decades the Vodacom Origins of Golf has reflected the changes in the global game through innovative activations, from celebrating the game’s earliest roots with a theme of vintage cars and plus fours to paying homage to the careers of legends Gary Player, Ernie Els and Retief Goosen in the years that the series was played in honour of their contributions to South African golf.

“The philosophy has always been to keep innovating in terms of the ultimate golf experience and to evolve with the changes in the game. The experience is one that puts you at the cutting edge of not only the professional playing side of the game and the new generation of stars on the Sunshine Tour, but also the technology and style that is changing the face of the game. We look forward to raising that bar even higher in 2023,” said Jaco Beukes, CEO of SAIL and the rights holders of the Vodacom Origins of Golf series.

The Vodacom Origins of Golf has been the platform for a selection of South African golf’s stars to launch their careers.

Major champion Louis Oosthuizen won his first Sunshine Tour title in a Vodacom Origins of Golf tournament and fellow Major winner Charl Schwartzel has also

competed on the series. Branden Grace, George Coetzee, Dean Burmester, Thriston Lawrence, Justin Harding and Ockie Strydom have all claimed victories on the series on their way to international success.

From experienced professionals such as James Kamte, Madalitso Muthiya, Jean Hugo, Heinrich Bruiners, Brandon Stone, Toto Thimba Jnr., Zander Lombard, Keenan Davidse and Daniel van Tonder, to rising stars Dylan Naidoo, Wilco Nienaber, Yurav Premlall, Martin Vorster and Casey Jarvis, the Vodacom Origins of Golf series has been a vital platform for their careers.

This year’s Vodacom Origins of Golf series teed off in Limpopo at the Zebula Country Club in August, followed by tournaments at Devonvale Golf and Wine Estate in the Western Cape in September, the Wild Coast Sun Country Club in KwaZulu-Natal in October, and the Grand Final at the Pezula Championship Course in November.

LA RESERVE GOLF LINKS SET FOR SPECTACULAR DEBUT AS NEW HOST OF 2023 AFRASIA BANK MAURITIUS OPEN

The magnificent new La Réserve Golf Links will make its international championship debut when it hosts the 2023 AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open from 14-17 December, opening its fairways to the leading professionals on the DP World Tour and Sunshine Tour.

As the first and only contemporary links in the Indian Ocean, co-designed by Major champion Louis Oosthuizen and Peter Matkovich, La Réserve Golf Links is the latest and most keenly anticipated offering in Heritage Resorts’ golf portfolio, offering an unparalleled experience of pure golfing drama.

The new course’s professional tournament debut coincides with the 2023 AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open now occupying an even more prominent place on the Sunshine Tour and DP World Tour schedules as part of a newly created Opening Swing of events that usher in the DP World Tour’s new season.

The AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open will be the final tournament on this Opening Swing, with La Réserve Golf Links set to be the stage where two champions are crowned in that week.

In 1923 a visitor described the course as “A monument to the origins of golf played on a South African links next to a southern sea” Not much has changed since then. The undulating course snakes its way through thickets of pristine coastal forest and over hilly dunes always with the smell and sounds of the Indian Ocean close by whose blue waters offer the most panoramic views from many of the fairways. In true links tradition every slope, mound and dip remains untouched, demanding creative shot making and deft reading of angles. Adding to the allure and charm of the course is its resident wild life. Normally shy bushbuck will continue grazing contently as you walk by while springbok and impala pronk with delight. The blesbok, fallow deer duiker and giant tortoise peer at the golfers with suspicion and there is bird life in abundance. Come and see for yourself.

Beyond the winner of the tournament, the Opening Swing will also have its own Order of Merit with the leading professional at the conclusion thereof winning an extra $200 000 and, if already a member of the DP World Tour, an invitation into the DP World Tour’s next scheduled Rolex Series tournament as well as a spot in each of the DP World Tour’s Back Nine series of tournaments.

“The AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open is a source of tremendous national pride and mirrors AfrAsia Bank’s vision to not only affirm Mauritius’ status as a major

international financial centre with a robust banking system, but also a vibrant epicentre to invest, work, live or retire. To

partner this vision with the exciting news of a new host venue as acclaimed as La Réserve Golf Links reinforces our belief of doing what others said cannot be done, and connecting local possibilities for a global impact,” said Thierry Vallet, Founder Executive of AfrAsia Bank.

La Réserve Golf Links adds significantly to the already world-class golf offering in the south of Mauritius and on the renowned Bel Ombre estate, with Heritage Golf Club having hosted the AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open on three previous occasions on its critically acclaimed Le Château Golf Course.

This new addition transforms Heritage Resorts into the only 45-hole golf destination in the Indian Ocean, establishing the south of the island as a

true home of golf.

“The 2023 edition of the AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open (ABMO) is set to be like no other,” said Thierry Montocchio, Executive Director and CEO of Rogers Hospitality. “Although we have previously hosted the event, the dramatic setting of La Réserve Golf Links promises to captivate players, viewers and spectators alike.

Visitors to Heritage Resorts will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in our distinctive blend of luxury, sustainability, and the inherent beauty of Mauritius, assuring a memorable stay that’s both indulgent and enriching, be that on or off the golf course.”

This will be the fourth new host course in the seventh edition of the AfrAsia Bank

Mauritius Open as the tournament continues to support the tourism objectives of Mauritius, with a global broadcast reach in excess of 550 million households showcasing what has become known as “Golf’s Most Beautiful Week”.

“We look forward to hosting the professionals and their families for a week that is indeed a highlight of the golf calendar.

The AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open is a key partner for Mauritius tourism as it brings the eyes of the golf world to our island and showcases our unique blend of spectacular golf courses and outstanding hospitality.

We have a history in the game that stretches back over a century, and we

are proud to be able to support the constant innovation in this industry that is represented by this tournament, and which reflects Mauritius as an island of energy and adventure,” said Arvind Bundhun, Director of the Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority (MTPA).

Since its debut in 2015, the AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open has also worked closely with the Mauritius Golf Federation (MGF) to grow the game on the island as Mauritian professionals vie for a place in the field.

“The AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open creates a strong aspirational effect for Mauritian golfers as they can see in a tangible way, right on their own doorstep, the wonders of this game and the doors it can open for them.

THE SECRET BEHIND ROOKIE BROOMHEAD’S SUCCESS

Jonathan Broomhead has a very simple secret behind his strong start to his ookie season on the Sunshine Tour and the four top-10s in eight tournaments that have carried him to the top of the Fortress Rookie of the Year standings. “Don’t make a big deal out of it,” said Broomhead. Standing on the putting green at Pretoria Country Club during last month’s Bain’s Whisky Ubunye Championship, Broomhead reflected on his Sunshine Tour journey to that point.

“When I earned my spot on the Sunshine Tour, I had a chat with my family and for me it was all about not making too much

of a big deal about being professional. I feel the more at ease you can be out here, the easier it makes it,” he said. With several goals to chase and a big summer of opportunity on the horizon in the DP World Tour co-sanctioned tournaments he’s hoping to qualify for, Broomhead is certainly keen to maintain his position at the top of the Fortress Rookie of the Year standings and claim more than just the honour of that title at the end of this season.

The leading rookie will also receive a bonus of R200 000.

But for now, he’s sticking to the plan. Don’t make a big deal out of it. And it seems to be working.

BACK NINE BLITZ EARNS MITCHELL SUNBET CHALLENGE TIME SQUARE TITLE

A strong back nine saw Malcolm Mitchell cruise to a remarkable four-stroke victory in the SunBet Challenge Time Square at Wingate Park Country Club in August and claim his maiden win on the Sunshine Tour.

After turning in one under for his round, Mitchell made five birdies on the back nine for a final round of 66 to win on 14 under par. He finished well clear of second-placed Louis Albertse, who had a great last day with a 65 to end on 10 under par.

Mitchell’s victory was his first on the Sunshine Tour in his 73rd event, and comes after he was the runner-up to

Estiaan Conradie in the same event at Wingate two years ago.

Starting the final round two strokes behind overnight leader and travelling companion Jaco van Zyl, Mitchell was still trailing the leaders when he reached the turn in just one-under for his round, despite making an eagle on the par-five second.

But a birdie on the par-four 10th kicked off an astonishing back nine that saw him pick up further shots on the 13th, 14th, 15th and 18th holes as he pulled clear of the field.

“I was absolutely in the zone after I woke up this morning – just feeling good and happy. I know I play well here. There’s something about this course that just suits my eye. I just love it here and it’s one of my favourites.

“I spoke with Estiaan on the morning of the final round and I said the event two years ago actually brings me a lot of confidence. It might have looked comfortable today, but the first nine was actually very hectic and I made some very good up-and-downs.

“But then on the back nine I just felt the calmest I have ever felt in my life. My ball

striking was unbelievable. I was making putts, and before I knew it, I opened my eyes and I had three birdies in a row from nowhere,” Mitchell beamed.

His caddie, the well-travelled Zwelithini “Terence” Ngoma, also had reason to feel delighted.

“It might sound arrogant, but I have this thing with my caddie. I have a very nice watch at home which I told him I would give to him when I get my first win on tour. And I don’t know why, but I actually packed it in the car this morning, I just had a feeling, I guess,” Mitchell explained.

competitive streak is one of Albertse’s prime traits and starting the day seven strokes behind Van Zyl did not bother him. A tremendous start saw Albertse birdie seven of the first eight holes to claim the lead. The Pretoria local bogeyed the par-four ninth hole, but birdied 10 and 11 to regain the lead. But dropped shots at the 12th and 15th holes ended his brave challenge.

Ryan van Velzen also mounted a charge on the back nine, with an eagle on the par-five 15th leaving him on five-under for the round. But he bogeyed the 17th and could only par the par-five closing hole to finish with a 68 and alone in third place on nine-under.

Overnight leader Van Zyl stumbled to a 75 in the final round, with just one birdie, finishing in a tie for sixth place on

KRUYSWIJK WINS VODACOM ORIGINS OPENER AT ZEBULA

Jacques Kruyswijk claimed his third victory on the Sunshine Tour with a one-stroke triumph in the Vodacom Origins of Golf at Zebula Country Club in August.

Kruyswijk laid the foundation for his win with a final round that saw him at six-under-par through the first 15 holes. It allowed him a bogey at the last as he signed for a 67 and victor yon 13 under par. Heinrich Bruiners took second place on 12 under as he also closed with a bogey for a 70.

The Centurion-based Kruyswijk began the final round two shots behind

Bruiners, but three birdies in his first six holes on Sunday saw him overtake the Fancourt golfer and sit handily just one stroke behind his playing partner and new leader Pieter Moolman, who also went out with three birdies in his opening six holes.

Further birdies on the 11th, 13th and 15th holes drew Kruyswijk level at the top, and he had the sole lead in the clubhouse after Moolman was undone by a triple-bogey seven at the 16th hole.

Bruiners bogeyed the par-four first hole, but thereafter played very solid golf and his fourth birdie of the day, on the 16th, kept him in the hunt before his bogey on the last hole.

Moolman finished with a 71 to end in a tie for fifth on 10-under-par, alongside Adam Breen (66), Jean Hugo (67), Nikhil Rama (67), Luca Filippi (67), James Hart du Preez (68) and Neil Schietekat (70).

The young duo of Jonathan Broomhead (68) and Gerhard Pepler (69) shared third place on 11-under-par.

In the historic first appearance of the Sunshine Ladies Tour

professionals in the same tournament, playing for the same prize money as the men, Cara Gorlei was the only woman to make the cut and she closed with a 75 on Sunday to finish level-par and in a tie for 52nd place.

Whatever happened

In this edition of South African golfing greats from the past we chat with Kevin Stone. Kevin takes us back to where it all began, the highs and the lows and what he is up to today.

“I was born in 1966 in a small mining town in the Free State called Harmony. My dad worked on the mines there so that’s where we were based at that time. Having my dad work on the mines, we used to move pretty often. That was until we eventually moved to Rustenburg where we stayed from 1974. My parents both still live in Rustenburg.

“It was in Rustenburg that I met my love of my life and wife Desiree. We met in school in 1984 and eventually got married in 1990 on the 9th green at the Gary Player CC”

“It was there that I fell in love with the game of GOLF. My dad started playing a few years before we moved there and he joined the Rustenburg golf club. I used to caddy for him and that led me to start playing as well. I was pretty fortunate that I found golf a pretty easy game and was a scratch golfer by the age of 14. In those days there were pretty strict rules for juniors who wanted to play on the weekends. For example, you had to be a single handicap and had to play with two adult members as well.

I was out of action for a very long time. Once I was healthy again I started playing the local Senior Tour. I managed to win a few events as well. It was only when I managed to score 61 in the final round and win by 10 shots at JCC (the week before lockdown) that I decided to quit on a record that no other golfer has……not even Tiger. My lowest recorded score and biggest winning margin of my career….. What a way to END my playing career.

“To this day I have no regrets…….my only advice I can give ANY sportsman is YOU WILL ONLY GET BACK WHAT YOU PUT IN”.

Welcome. Yo 're home.

Umkomaas golf course was first constructed, as a 9-hole layout, in 1913 but was expanded to 18 holes in 1926. In 1932 reknown course designer Robert "Bob" Grimsdell re-designed the course, capitalising on the natural contours of the land and taking advantage of the glorious sea views - in fact, most holes offer great views of the warm Indian ocean. The course layout has remained largely unchanged and as a result, one of Umkomaas' unique features are the raised greens, thanks to over 100 years of top-dressings and treatments.

Although not overly long, the course offers a great challenge for low handicappers, especially when the coastal winds blow. It is however forgiving for even an occasional golfer making it the perfect option for families and groups. Well placed bunkers and undulating fairways mean that those seeking to card a low round need to think their way around the course whilst those looking to simply have fun will enjoy themselves too.

Umkomaas is a great choice for those wanting to get the whole family out into the fresh air. We offer exceptional family membership packages and the opportunity to learn to play via our KidzGolf programme

Living up to our reputation as the Friendliest Club, Umkomaas offers a warm welcome to visitors both on and off the course. Competitions are held weekly on Wednesdays and Saturdays and visitors are always welcome.

We look forward to welcoming you soon!

KARMIS BREAKS WIN DROUGHT AT FNB

ESWATINI CHALLENGE

Peter Karmis had not won on the Sunshine Tour since August 2018, but the 42-year-old showed he still has the bottle for it as he clinched a thrilling one-stroke victory in the FNB Eswatini Challenge at the Nkonyeni Lodge and Golf Estate at the end of July.

Karmis fired a two-under-par 70 in the Saturday final round to finish on 10-under-par overall, edging out Stuart Krog (69) on nine-under for his seventh Sunshine Tour title.

Matthew Spacey, who enjoyed a four-stroke lead going into the last day,

stumbled to a 76 on Saturday and ended up sharing third place on eight-under-par with Louis Albertse (67), last week’s winner CJ du Plessis (68) and Ruan Korb (69).

Although Karmis started brilliantly with a birdie on the par-four first hole, and gained two more shots on the seventh and eighth holes to reach the turn on three-under, he endured a rollercoaster back nine that saw him sandwich a birdie on the par-five 13th hole with bogeys on the 11th and 15th holes.

& Golf Superintendent

WITH NEIL SCHEEPERS

Stellenbosch Golf Club

1. When did you realize that turf management was the industry you want to take further?

In 2001 I started studying landscaping at Technikon Pretoria (Tshwane University of Technology) and I went to help a school friend out at Loftus Versfeld who was busy over seeding and prepping Loftus for what was at that time still the “Super Rugby season”. That’s where I realised this is more my line, rather than traditional landscaping.

2. What is the best and worst part of being a golf course superintendent?

- Best part of being a Superintendent – is working outside, working with people, working with, and in nature and trying your best to create a great playing surface at arguably the busiest 18-hole golf course in SA with more than 52 000 eighteen-hole golf rounds a year. Seeing the sun rises and sun sets whilst still at work is also very special. There’s nothing more satisfying getting a compliment from a golfer saying “well done” to you and your team “the course played and looked great”.

- Worst part of being Superintendent – golfers, being disrespectful of the team’s hard work. Essentially taking the hours and dedication that you and your team have put in to provide an excellent a golf course, for granted. Missing out on family days especially in summer, kids sporting events over weekends. The worst is however without doubt a drought. There is nothing worse than a drought as it just breaks your heart and your team’s spirit and there’s nothing you can do about it.

3. You are at Stellenbosch GC, not to far from the coast, does the coastal climate have an

influence on the course maintenance?

No not really, Stellenbosch is 20+kms from the coast. During summer we are about 10°C warmer than the areas directly on the coast. We don’t suffer as much from the wind than the coastal courses but we do get our August winds which, at times have caused major damage to the course with trees being blown over.

4. What are the differences in grasses at Stellenbosch to other parts of the country?

We are very similar to other parts of the country.

- Bent / Poa mix on the greens (cool season grasses)

- Kikuyu on tee’s, fairways, and rough (warm season grass)

- Veld grass / Kikuyu mix in the deep rough (warm season grass)

During winter there’s more Poa Annua on tee’s, fairways and in the rough, which, off course, dies back in the summer.

5. Does one need different machinery on

www.sagolftrader.co.za September | October 2023 88 SPECIAL FEATURE - ALL ABOUT GREENKEEPING
Q A

course for different types of grasses around the country?

Not really, your basics stay the same throughout the country, but you need different machinery for different areas on the course.

- Greens: walk behind cylinder mowers

- Tee’s and Fairways: ride on cylinder mowers just different size for bigger or smaller areas

- Rough if its only kikuyu with no veld grass mix in between: a cylinder mower can be used but on Stellenbosch we use a rotary blade mower as your cylinder mower tends to struggle to mow your veld grass with more upright growth.

7. Do maintenance staff ever come into conflict with golfers and how do you deal with this?

There is from time to time a grumpy person on the course which will find fault with something and will accost the closest staff member. I normally try and keep calm and will address the golfer and explain why that person is busy working there or why he is making a noise with a machine. Golfers must please remember that staff member woke up just after 4am to be at work at 5am to provide a well-manicured golf course to play on.

8. People always complain about inconsistent bunkers how difficult is it to maintain consistent bunkers and do you implement general check and how?

It is one of the most difficult areas to achieve the ever elusive “consistent” bunker. There are so many factors that are influencing the consistency of a bunker. First of all do, is the sand “consistent”, generally not. Do the course have “back to back” irrigation, do you have consistent drainage in every bunker, is all the bunker slopes exactly the same in relation to the wind direction, sand levels etc, etc. Unfortunately it’s not possible to check each and every bunker everyday but we try our best to keep them consistent. It remains a mystery how the condition of a hazard has become universally the number 1 complaint in golf.

6. Do you think it should be mandatory for each golf course to close one day per week for maintenance?

Yes please ! With a busy course like Stellenbosch it is always quite tricky to get a head start if you need to do maintenance especially, verticutting, dusting or spiking of greens or other cultural practises on other areas like tee’s or fairways. We start at 5 in the morning to get that head start before golfers arrive. I’m very fortunate ‘that we close the course twice a year for 5 days to complete my 2 hollow tining procedures.

I find this far better than a rushed 2 day process during which the course is closed and golfers playing again on day 3.

All being said and done it’s a very rewarding job that I enjoy immensely 95% of the time.

Karmis showed his mettle, however, by finishing with three straight pars, while Krog suffered a costly double-bogey on the par-four 16th hole.

“You need a bit of luck and things went my way, especially at the death,” Karmis said. “I was trying not to get too excited and on the last couple of holes I was very nervous.

“Some guys shy away from nerves, they try and fix it, but that can become very difficult. I prefer to

embrace it and enjoy the nerves.

“I know it’s been five years since I won, but we were in lockdown for a long time and I had a struggle with injury. So it feels like I had three years off,” Karmis said.

Whatever the final round held in store for Karmis, he knew the Nkonyeni Golf Estate course was one he enjoyed. Saturday’s victory is his fourth in Eswatini, having won the Lombard Insurance Classic twice (2007 & 2009) and the Investec Royal Swazi Open in 2017.

Spring Treatment is a wonderful opportunity to ensure you have a healthy functioning root system:

Turf requires a root zone with 50 % air & oxygen to fully function

Should your greens be draining poorly you will have less oxygen in the root zone

Check you drainage by finding the daylight point (point green drains out)

Find centre drainage line – centre back of green – open up inspection point (should be 1 metre behind green) and run a hose pipe through this

If low areas you can add a smile drain to increase drainage at the front of back of the green

Run off water can be diverted using a cut off drainage or a sump pump – both effective & cost effective solutions

If you green is draining below the water level of an adjacent dam you will need to install a sump pump to avoid the water pushing back up into the green

Prior to spring treatment:

1. Soil test – check your macros, micros & sulphur in ppm

Feel free to email your results to sales@talkingturf. co.za and we will gladly assist you with a sound nutrition & integrated pest management programme.

2. Hollow-tyne – 12mm and broom in your original construction sand into the holes

The image below of BLACK LAYER – develops from organic matter which compacts over the years. This layer is broken by hollow tyning. It is also aggravated by high sulphur levels in the soil (soil testing is critical – avoid feeding sulphur based fertilizer if your sulphur is ppm is 20-40 or higher.

THOMAS TO TEE IT UP AT

AFRICA

S MAJOR

Major Champion Justin Thomas will tee it up at the Nedbank Golf Challenge as ‘Africa’s Major’ returns to Gary Player Country Club from November 9-12.

Two-time US PGA Champion Thomas will make his debut in Sun City, with the US$6,000,000 event being the penultimate tournament on the 2023 DP World Tour schedule, carrying an increased number of Race to Dubai Ranking Points as the 64-man field vies for a place in the season-ending DP World Tour Championship.

The Ryder Cup star and Major winner will bid to become the first American winner

of this event since Jim Furyk’s second victory in 2006 and is thrilled by the prospects of teeing it up in South Africa for the first time.

“I am so excited to get to Sun City for the Nedbank Golf Challenge and experience everything South Africa has to offer,” said Thomas.

“It is a country I’ve always wanted to visit and this tournament gives me the opportunity not only to do that, but to compete in such an historic event.

Strydom qualified for the November 9-12 showpiece at the Gary Player Country Club after winning the 2022/23 Sunshine Tour Order of Merit delivered by The Courier Guy in what was a groundbreaking season in his career.

He joins the exclusive 64-man field chasing the US$6,000,000 prize money as well as the increased number of Race to Dubai Ranking Points and a possible place in the season-ending DP World Tour Championship.

“The Nedbank Golf Challenge is a tournament every South African professional grew up watching and wanting to compete in one day. It’s one of those iconic sports events that has witnessed incredible moments in golf over the years, and to be able to make

my debut and be a part of this is another very special moment in my career,” said Strydom.

Tournament Host Gary Player said he looked forward to welcoming Strydom onto the first tee at the Gary Player Country Club.

“The Nedbank Golf Challenge has always had an aspirational effect on South African golf. Generations of young South African golfers have grown up watching this tournament and dreamt of playing in it one day. They’ve seen all of our great South African golfers progress from the Sunshine Tour to international success, and the reward of then securing a place in this exclusive field. That will always

be one of the great legacies of ‘Africa’s Major’ – its ability to inspire greatness. In my own career, I realised full well the power of having a target to aim for and a goal to achieve. Ockie has now realised this dream for himself, thanks to the opportunities provided by our Sunshine Tour and the strong alliance with the DP World Tour.”

Strydom secured his place at Sun City thanks to a remarkable 2022/23 season in which he won twice in the space of three months on the DP World Tour in the Alfred Dunhill Championship and Singapore Classic.

“There was a time when I wondered whether I would ever win on the DP

World Tour, and then to win twice in three months was incredible for me. It’s given me the self-belief to know I belong out here and that I can compete against the top players in the world. I can’t wait to test myself against a very strong field and in front of the South African fans,” said Strydom.

The Nedbank Golf Challenge has been a highlight of the South African sporting calendar since its first edition in 1981, with defending champion Tommy Fleetwood among a glittering list of winners including South African golf icon Ernie Els – a three-time winner of the event – the legendary Seve Ballesteros, and Major champions Bernhard Langer, Ian Woosnam, Sir Nick Faldo, Retief

The 2023 Nedbank Golf Challenge will once again be included on the DP World Tour schedule in partnership with Nedbank and Sun International and will be the penultimate event before the season-ending DP World Tour Championship, Dubai.
