To me the answer is quite simply no. The fight was worth a reputed $300 million and this was apportioned between them. The amount of money that is earned by the top golfers, boxers, footballers and so on is obscene and in my opinion it is a bad example to the youngsters of today. The youth put the likes of Rory Mcllroy, Jordan Spieth and Floyd Mayweather on a pedestal based on the fact that they are so wealthy and famous. What about the top heart surgeons, architects, environmentalists etc. Don’t get me wrong, I admire sportsman of all codes but I also admire people who achieve greatness in other facets of life. I think there is a social responsibility to promote careers other than those in the sporting arena with the same fervour as those that are sporting related. I would not want my children looking to someone such as Floyd Mayweather for inspiration. Whilst I recognise that most sports stars probably
I do agree that the Mayweather/Pacquiao fight seemed to be an overly hyped money making affair and although it was denied, I am willing to bet that there will be a rematch in which even more money will be made. Children will always be enthralled by great sporting events; however the responsibility lies with their parents to point out just how hard it is to make it as a professional sportsman and how important it is to have a tertiary education. Lastly I think that Floyd Mayweather is an extreme example of money being the be-all and end-all. Most sportsman play for the love of the game and the money follows; Jordan Spieth is a fine example of this. Regards

“As an association we are 90 years old this year, and the new Seal more clearly defines the role and experience of our members within our overall vision to be a brand in action.” Following a three-year apprenticeship, a newly qualified PGA member is classed as a Class A Professional, and after a combination of time, additional studies and contribution to their personal work environment, they are upgraded in status.
T
he experience and status of this country’s PGA professionals will now be more clearly identifiable following the launch of the PGA of South Africa’s new Member Seal this month. The new Seal includes a section on the bottom that now clearly identifies the member as either a newly qualified Class A Professional or a veteran Master Professional with a minimum of 20 years’ experience in the industry. “The updated design affords the PGA Member the opportunity to share his/her class of Membership. This is also in accordance with the use of the PGA Seal worldwide and ties in with the best practices of the PGA World Alliance,” says Ivano Ficalbi, Chief Executive of the PGA of South Africa.

After three years as a PGA member, he or she graduates to a Class AA Professional. A six-year PGA member is classed as a Class AAA Professional. A decade in the industry is recognised as a Fellow Professional. A member with 15 years of experience is classed as an Advanced Fellow. And the ultimate recognition is that of Master Professional, which recognises 20 years or more in the industry. “This creates a more clearly defined career pathway for our members,” says Ficalbi. “But the progression is not just based on time. It’s dependent upon our Continuous Professional Development (CPD) programme whereby our members are encouraged to upgrade their skills and earn points as in any other professional association before they can progress.” The benefit for the golf industry is that the status of their PGA professional is now significantly enhanced through the visibility of his or her experience. Clubs seeking new PGA professionals can also now clearly advertise for the level of experience they require.

Tiger Woods and Lindsey Vonn split up
F
Former world number one golfer Tiger Woods and his girlfriend, US Olympic skiing champion Lindsey Vonn, say they have ended their relationship.
Both blamed the pressure of their busy schedules for the split. Ms Vonn said on Facebook that the decision was mutual. In a statement on his website, Mr Woods said he would “always cherish our time together”. The sports stars first publicly announced they were an item in March 2013 following weeks of speculation. “After nearly three years together, Tiger and I have mutually decided to end our relationship,” Ms Vonn, 30, said on her Facebook page.
The couple were last seen together in public at last month’s Masters golf tournament, where Ms Vonn was with Mr Woods’s seven-year-old daughter Sam and six-year-old son Charlie.
“I will always cherish the memories that we’ve created together. Unfortunately, we both lead incredibly hectic lives that force us to spend a majority of our time apart.
Mr Woods, 39, said in his statement: “I have great admiration, respect and love for Lindsey and I’ll always cherish our time together. She has been amazing with Sam and Charlie and my entire family.
“He and his beautiful family will always hold a special place in my heart.’’
“Unfortunately, we lead very hectic lives and are both competing in demanding sports. It’s difficult to spend time together.”

Since 2012 I have been playing consistantly and I’m inspired by sharing the wisdom with other women and the youth. 4. Who got you into playing Golf? Eddie Makeketlane, a staunch business man and entrepreneur. He encouraged me to start playing golf in 2003. In 2005 I enrolled with the Wits Golf Academy where I was taught about applying golf principles in life, career and business. I’m joining the Soweto Country Club which I will be working very closely with to build a business model that will put the club on the map and attract golfers from all walks of life. Soweto Country Club forms part of our rich South African heritage. My goal is to collectively work with the Soweto Country Club committee and community to preserve our heritage and identify future lady golfers in the township who will transform the golf landscape. 7. Which is your favourite golf course? Euphoria Golf Estate & Hydro - a course designed by the world’s former number one lady golfer, Annika Sorenstram. Strategic players who think about every shot are favoured by this demanding course. 8. What has been your most embarrassing moment on the golf course? My first ProAm - I was an hour early but got carried away with perfecting my driver at the driving range. When I got to the tee box I was two minutes late and all the Pros had played their first shots.

Through your chips down & see if you can improve your odds ;-)
This drill is one of my all time favourites :-) It helps keep you focused on your strike, helps keep your body steady through your strike & helps you strike the horizontal axis of your putters sweet spot consistently. It’s a great drill to do on the carpet at home or on the practice putting green if it’s cut nice & low! You can even place your Z-Star or XV golf ball over your Srixon ‘casino chip’ ball marker & if your eye line is directly over the ball you shouldn’t see any part of the chip ;-) Then as a second drill, putt the chip out from underneath the ball. You will strike the ball above the horizontal axis of your putter but when your ball is back on the putting surface you will strike it true, keeping your Cleveland putter lower through the impact zone...

Drill number two helps keep your putter swinging down the correct path through impact & helps you strike the vertical axis of your putter more consistently. I’ve often used tees in the ground for the same effect but when it gets windy the top of the gate gets blown down! The Srixon boxes with Z-Star’s or XV’s in them are nice & stable, with sharp lines to channel your putter through. Line them up nicely. Line your Z-Star golf balls ‘aimline’ logo up so you can see if it rolls over itself correctly, miss the channel of boxes & stay steady enough to miss the top of the gate. Poor body alignment, ball positioning, looking up to soon, rocking out of your stroke or early left shoulder rotation may have the putter strike the boxes. Build repetition & confidence in your stroke - work on it! Drill number three helps you keep the putter face square through impact. If the toe strikes your Srixon dozen box first the box will spin left (with right handers). If the heel strikes first the box spins right. Strike the box correctly & it slides straight down your line. If your ball position is out, too far forward or back in your stance, the path or putter head rotation will also be out & it will spin the box off path :-( Poor shoulder alignment relative to your aim line can spin the box out & coming out of your strike to soon or disconnection of your arms through impact causes the toe or heel to lead or lag in your stroke. Putting the dozen box with no golf balls in it ;-) builds confidence in your path & your ability to square up your Cleveland’s club face consistently. This will take your putting to a HOLE new level :-) 6 inches under!!!

Rory McIlroy wins WGC Match Play by beating Gary Woodland

Rory McIlroy won his first WGC Match Play title with a 4&2 victory over America’s Gary Woodland.
The world number one shook off a nervy start with the putter to move clear with a string of birdies on the front nine. Woodland rallied on the inward half, but missed a critical short putt to win the 13th and cut the gap to one hole. The pressure on McIlroy was released and the Northern Irishman sealed the title. There was an edginess to both men early on in the round, as McIlroy putted poorly, while Woodland’s driving accuracy deserted him.

However, Woodland steadied at the start of the back nine and wins on 11 and 12 cut the deficit to two, but he passed up a glorious chance on the 13th to heap pressure on McIlroy, missing from five feet. Earlier in the day, McIlroy won the final two holes with stunning play to end Jim Furyk’s dogged challenge in the semi-final.
Yet McIlroy then three-putted and the hole was halved in bogey fives.The third hole epitomised the scrappy early play.
McIlroy - who needed extra holes to beat both Billy Horschel and Paul Casey in earlier rounds - was one hole down to Furyk on the 17th tee, but struck a pinpoint iron to seven feet and holed for a two to go all-square.
First, Woodland suffered a fate familiar to all amateur golfers when, having already hooked his drive, he then hit a tree with his approach and watched the ball trickle back to his feet.
He then ran in a huge putt across the 18th green for eagle to seal his final berth.

Naidoo claims Nomads Strydom powers to victoSA Boys U-19 Stroke Play ry in Western Province

ess than nine months since he won the Nomads SA Boys U-17 Stroke Play at Polokwane GC 17-year-old Dylan Naidoo from Fourways claimed a seven stroke victory in the Nomads SA Boys U-19 Stroke Play Championship at the same venue.
The Central Gauteng junior carded a final round 69 to triumph on 15-under-par 273, while defending champion Tristen Strydom finished a distant second after closing with a 75. The TuksSport Golf Academy player le d by one stroke going into the final round from playing partner Strydom, who also signed for a 65 in the third round. In the final round, Naidoo lipped out for bogey at the parfour first and Strydom walked away with an eight on his card after gumming his second shot over the green into the hazard. Strydom added to his woes by dropping another shot at the second and Naidoo found himself leading by five with 16 holes to play. “I almost couldn’t get my head around it,” Naidoo said. “I had a one shot lead and suddenly I’m five shots ahead. Naidoo paid tribute to Strydom, saying that playing with the country’s number one amateur for 36 holes was both challenging and inspiring.

ising junior Tristen Strydom lived up to his star billing when he replaced former number one Christiaan Bezuidenhout at the top of the South African Golf Association (SAGA) rankings at the end of last year. Five months on, the 17-year-old Serengeti golfer romped to a five stroke victory in the Western Province Amateur Championship at Rondebosch GC last month. I put my head down and gunned for the win,” said Strydom. “The wind was blowing a gale and it definitely wasn’t easy out there, but I was really motivated.
“It was absolutely fantastic playing with Tristen and I don’t think the results are a fair reflection, because we were neckin-neck all day,” Naidoo said.
“The Western Province Amateur is one of those titles that every amateur wants to own. We were so proud of Christiaan when he won the double in 2013 and defended his stroke play title last year. We are very good mates and I definitely want to follow in his footsteps.”
“He is an incredible fighter and we definitely fed off each other. Every time I made a birdie, he would answer with a birdie and vice versa. I only began to relax a little with four holes left to play.”
Strydom lagged two off the pace in the first round and trailed Central Gauteng’s Marco Steyn by four strokes after successive 71s. He moved into contention with yet another 71 in the third round.

Strydom runs up Cape double in Hermanus Tristen Strydom further cemented his position as country’s number one ranked amateur when he seized his second victory in as many weeks in the Boland Amateur Stroke Play Championship at the end of April.

ust seven days after his Western Province Amateur Stroke Play Championship triumph at Rondebosch GC Strydom enjoyed another come-from-behind conquest at Hermanus GC. The Ekurhuleni amateur lagged two off the pace heading into the final round and fired a flawless four-under-par 68 to claim a one stroke victory on nine-under-par 207. Strydom was tied for the lead with Clayton Mansfield heading down the 18th, but he denied the KwaZulu-Natal player victory with a solid birdie at the closing hole. “The last two weeks have been incredible,” Strydom said. “In both tournaments, I was struggling a lot at the start but managed to work out the problem and come through the field to win. “I also have to thank my caddie, Nicholas Sauls from Caledon, who was also on the bag in the Western Province Amateur. He

kept me focussed and his input was definitely a factor in my success. “It doesn’t matter if I play well or stink, I love competing here. I always have a great time here and I really enjoy the course. It’s been a really great tournament and I would like to thank everyone here at Hermanus GC for a fantastic week.”

Central conquers Ekurhuleni for SA U-23 IPT title
Gauteng retaliated with a spirited challenge to defeat Gauteng North with an impressive 9.5 – 2.5. Central Gauteng won three Foursomes games, while Ludovic Bax and Rupert Kaminski squared against Rosswell Sinclair and Albert Venter to give Central Gauteng a 3.5 – 0.5 lead heading into the Singles. Matthew Kiewitz, Kyle Barker, Jason Rossiter, Werner van Wyk, Jason Viljoen and Bax reeled in the victories to hand Central Gauteng the victory.

ust an hour after the Western Province seniors denied the Central Gauteng by half a games point in the INDWE South African Senior Inter-Provincial, the Under-23 team put the smile back on the union’s members when they beat Ekurhuleni by the same margin. Both teams began the final round on seven points, but Central Gauteng held a slender one games point edge over Ekurhuleni after four rounds at CC Johannesburg. The 2014 winners produced a champion’s innings against KwaZulu-Natal to triumph 8 – 4 and gain two crucial points and 13.5 games points for the podium finish. Central Gauteng threw everything into their match against KwaZulu-Natal, but came up an agonising half a games point short after beating the coastal side 7.5 – 4.5. Province topped the log with 12 points and 51.5 game points, while the 2013 champions had to settle in second place with a dozen points and 51 game points. Western Province sealed their fifth title with eight points, finishing one point clear of KwaZulu-Natal. The coastal side saved their best for last, defeating Ekurhuleni 7.5 – 2.5 and beating Boland 4 – 2 to climb to second in the standings. Gauteng North thumped Central Gauteng 5.5 – 0.5 to finish third on six points, edging Central Gauteng into fourth on games points.

Giant-killer Nel claims WP Amateur glory Nel hit the golfing radar with a joint 10th finish in the Sanlam SA Amateur Championship Stroke Play Qualifier in March, but was summarily dispatched 6 & 4 by Western Province’s Carlo O’Reilly in the second round of the Match Play Section. He made some noise again during the ProShop Northern Amateur Qualifier where he tied for second behind fellow KeNako Academy player, Jade Buitendag, who also hails from Border. Once again, he exited the Match Play Division early. This time, however, better control and a solid game helped him stay the course. The Southern Cape golfer exacted his revenge on O’Reilly with a 3 & 2 first round victory and downed top Province amateur Ian Snyman at the 20th hole to reach the quarter-finals. He handed Central Gauteng’s Darin de Smidt a 6 & 5 drubbing and dispatched Rupert Kaminski, another Central Gauteng standout, 3 & 2 in the semi-final.

SA lifts fifth successive RAACT title

outh Africa celebrated their fifth consecutive victory in the All-Africa Challenge Trophy (RAACT) with an impressive final round performance at Omeya GC in Windhoek, Namibia at the end of April. For a third day running, Cara Gorlei partnered Demi Flanagan to post a final round 145 that secured the victory for South Africa on a winning total of sevenover-par 439. The South African team finished 30 strokes clear of nearest challengers Zimbabwe, who overhauled Namibia with to claim second. Western Province number one Gorlei was once again the only player in the field to break par. The Milnerton golfer returned a two under 70 to lead the South African team, while Flanagan from Border carded a 75. Gauteng’s Shawnelle de Lange signed for a non-counting 77.
“Cara’s rounds of 69, 74 and 70 earned her the top spot in the Individual Standings with a 13 stroke lead on even-par 213,” said Womens Golf South Africa president, Karen Olivant.

Roux goes wire-to-wire in SA Mid-Amateur Stroke Play Gerlou Roux fired a closing 72 to complete a wire-to-wire victory in the South African Mid-Amateur Stroke Play Championship.
T
he country’s top ranked mid-amateur was in imperious form over four days at Victoria CC in KwaZulu-Natal, having opened with a five-under-par 66 en route to an impressive seven-under-par 277 total and a four stroke victory over fellow Western Province player Elton James. The winning display – his fifth on the mid-amateur circuit this season – left the 38-year-old Roux extremely satisfied. “I had the lead from day one and kept it, but that was quite a lot of pressure and it feels really good that I was able to pull it through,” Roux said. “I just felt my game was there, but more importantly, I had to sleep on the lead for three nights and needed a lot of patience out there to keep the focus going. “It’s a wonderful feeling to know that I have excelled on both the Open Amateur and Mid-Amateur circuits. I wasn’t just a one-day-wonder, and this victory gives me a lot of confidence.” Roux cemented his spot at the top of the Mid-Amateur rankings, but hopes he has done enough to earn double national colours this season. “One of my goals this year was to become the first player to wear the green and gold on Open Amateur and Mid-Amateur level,” he said. “I represented South Africa at the Leopard Trophy and the Southern Cross Invitational. Hopefully this victory will be good enough to get me in the Mid-Amateur team for France later this year.”

Porteous and Stone both held the number one spot in the South African amateur rankings in before Stone turned professional in 2013, and Porteous made his pro debut at the M2M Russian Open in July last year. The pair locked heads many times in the past and the humdinger final certainly didn’t disappoint. The pair both birdied the 18th to finish in a dead-lock at

“It was nerve-wracking out there and certainly not boring,” Porteous said.
“Then came the once in a life-time eagle. It was a great way to finish and this is what I was playing for - to win and get an exemption on the Challenge Tour. Hopefully if I have a good season now and I will get a European Tour card, so to win was unbelievable. “I handled the pressure okay, apart from on the greens where I struggled a little with the nerves. Apart from that I kept the ball in play and all the other things I needed to do to keep myself in it. Then at the end of the day, to win in a play-off was great. “It is not ideal to have to beat one of your friends, but at the end of the day there has to be a winner, and unfortunately for him he was runner-up.” Three-time Sunshine Tour winner Louis de Jager closed with a 70 to tie for 19th on seven under 281 and compatriot Dylan Frittelli shared 34th on four under 284 after signing off with a 74.

Jordan’s Spieth’s history-making Masters win, by the numbers Unbelievable. That’s about all you can say after Jordan Spieth’s fourround performance at this year’s Masters. In what was supposed to be Rory McIlroy’s coronation or Tiger Woods’ winning comeback, the 21-year-old Texan stole the show, earning his first major title, living up to the hype that accompanied his decision to go pro and showing that there’s a new golfing star on the block. Some of the amazing numbers Spieth put up at the Maters. 1. Spieth set record for best 36-hole (-14), 54-hole score (-16) and tied the best 72-hole score (-18) in Masters history. Spieth was historic on almost every day at Augusta. His first-round 64 was one off the Augusta single-round record. He came back with a 66 to break Ray Floyd’s 36-hole record from 1976, then set the 54-hole mark held jointly by Floyd and Tiger Woods from 1997. Tiger, of course, held the overall record from his miracle coming out party in ’97, which Spieth tied on the Sunday. 2. He set the record for most birdies at one Masters. Phil Mickelson (2010) previously held the record with 25. Spieth tied that on No. 8, then broke it on No. 10 with a 20-footer that hit the center of the cup. “I’ve never seen anything like it,” Jim Nantz said afterward. Tiger has 19 birdies at his famous Masters in 1997, but also had two eagles to help keep his score low. 3. The Texan became the only man to reach -19 at The Masters.
In the 77 playings of the Masters, only one player had ever gotten to -18 on the scoreboard. That was Tiger Woods, who accomplished the feat on the 16th hole of the final round in 1997 and parred out from there. Spieth did it a few times on Saturday and Sunday, the got to -19 to make everything foot.

4. He’s just the second man in 100 years to go wire-towire at major while 21 years old or younger. A young Walter Hagan stayed atop the leaderboard for the entire 1914 U.S. Open, but no one had done that since Spieth on that weekend. 5. He’s the first golfer since 1976 to go solo wire-to-wire at Augusta. Ray Floyd did that in 1976 tournament we’ve mentioned before. Trevor Immelman (2008) had been the last first-round leader to win the tournament but was tied for lead after the end of the first round, not in sole possession of the position. Spieth is only the fifth man in history to go wire-for-wire.
6. Spieth is the second player since before World War II to card three victories before turning 22. Take a guess as to the other. Oh, and Spieth is the second-youngest to win the Masters also. Again, the youngest won’t come as a surprise.

If the four rounds were devoted into eight nine-hole segments, Spieth’s score would look as such: -4, -4, -3, -3, -1, -1, -1, -1. 8. The winnings at this year’s Masters were $1.8 million. That’s just about four-times as much as Tiger Woods made when he won the tournament in 1997. Tigers’ check from that year: $476,000. Spieth, and all other players, should be writing thank you notes to Tiger for what El Tigre did for golf purses.
10. Spieth avoided a Norman-esque and Rory-esque collapse. A. The last person to lead The Masters by himself through three rounds was Greg Norman in 1996. That year, he was paired in the final group with an Englishman (Nick Faldo) who went on to capitalize on one of the great collapses in golf history. Justin Rose was no Faldo on that Sunday.
9. Spieth moves to No. 2 in the world with the win.
B. Four years ago, another 21-year-old held a four-shot lead going into Sunday at Augusta then blew up for an 80 thanks, in part, to one of the worse tee shots you’ll ever see at No. 10. But Rory McIlroy seems to have recovered nicely from that blow up. 11. And still, this wasn’t quite as dominant as Tiger in 1997. That year, the second-place finisher was at -6, 12 shots behind Woods. This year, Spieth’s win was “only” by four strokes. That’s irrelevant — stuff for the historians and stat geeks to fight over. Regardless the margin of victory, welcome to the big leagues, Jordan. It’s just the beginning.
This means the combined ages of the Nos. 1 and 2 players (Rory is No. 1) are about two years more than Phil Mickelson’s actual age. Though, as Lefty (age 44) showed at The Masters, he’s far from done. Prediction: He breaks Jack Nicklaus’s record for oldest player to win the Masters (46) and Julian Boros’s mark for oldest player overall to win a major (he was 48 when he won the the 1968 PGA Championship). It’s amazing that record has lasted so long.

Lamb Shank Golf 12 Marsh Street, Mossel Bay – 044 691 0057
Directions Preheat oven to 180 degrees celsius. Season the lamb shanks with salt and pepper. 3. In a large frying pan brown the lamb shanks on all sides in the olive oil; remove from pan and put into a large casserole dish to keep warm. 4. In the same frying pan put in the carrots, onions, garlic, bay leaves and rosemary and cook slowly until nicely coloured. 5. Pour in the red wine, beef stock, and brown sugar into the frying pan and stir gently bringing it to a low boil. 6. Pour the wine mixture over the lamb shanks; top up with water if needed. 7. Cover; put in oven and cook for 2-3 hours until very tender. 8. Remove the lamb shanks and keep warm and skim the fat off the top of the red wine juices. 9. Mix together the corn flour with just a bit of cold water and whisk the corn flour mixture into the red wine juices until desired consistency. 10. Serve with mashed potatoes & and a mint sauce to compliment the dish. 1. 2.

eet julle hoe swaar voel ‘n gholfsak? Veral met al die ekstras soos warm klere, reënklere, sambreel, energie drankies, ekstra handoekke en handskoene om van die gholfballe nie eens te praat nie. Nie gewoonlik nie, maar nadat ek nou vir ongeveer 4 maande nie opi sak was nie, voel die outjie nogal ekstra gewigtig. Miskien is ek net ‘n bietjie onfiks. Maar dit was baie lekker om die afgelope 4 maande bietjie kwaliteit tyd saam met my familie te kon deurbring terwyl Greg ( Hear-

mon) mos opi sak was. Greg en Louis het ‘n baie suksesvolle 4 maande gehad met 5 uit 7 afsnypunte wat ingesluit het 4 top 10 posisies en 1 top 20 in die Masters. Ek sal my sokkies moet optrek om seker te maak dat ek en Louis ook sulke sukses saam sal proe. My eerste toernooi terug opi sak was die Cadillac Putjiespel Toernooi in San Francisco gedurende die eerste week van Mei. Sommer met ons eerste oefenrondte saam het ek besef hoe ek dit die afgelope 4 maande gemis het. Dit was werklik lekker om weer saam met Louis

op die skoonvelde te kon loop en deel te wees van die span. En Louis se gholf is mooi op vorm wat dit sommer nog lekkerder gemaak het. Gedurende die eerste 3 dae was dit ‘n rondomtalie kompetisie en het Louis eers teen Keegan Bradley, toe Miguel Jimenez en toe die baie belangrike een teen Bubba Watson gespeel. Julle weet mos hoekom die een so belangrik was... die uitspeelstryd in die 2012 Masters waar ek ook opi sak was en Bubba ons met daardie haakhou getroef het! Die eerste twee was redelike maklike oorwinnings maar die wedstryd teen Bubba was ‘n naelbytstryd soos min. En natuurlik moes dit weer op ‘n uitklopstryd uitloop. Beide Louis en Bubba het baie goeie gholf gespeel en die wedstryd het lekker wipplank gery. Dit was natuurlik vir my fantasties toe Louis die wen-set vir voëltjie inslaan, Bubba se set rakelings mis en Louis sodoene kwalifiseer vir die Top 16. Die volgende rondte was teen Ricky Fowler. Die jong man kan gholf speel hoor. Weereens was dit ‘n op-en-af wedstryd en toe ons op die 18de bof staan was alles gelykop. Louis stoot sy bofhou effens regs in die ruveld en Ricky slaan een in die middle van die skoonveld. By die bal aangekom sien ek dat dit sommer kwaai diep lê en toe Louis vir my vir die 5 hout vra, wonder ek nogal wat nou gaan gebeur. Louis slaan die mees ongelooflikste hou wat ek in baie jare gesien – grawe die bal uit die dik rof en reguit setperk toe. ‘n Wip en ‘n rol later is ons sowat 12 voet vanaf die putjie met ‘n set vir arend wat wag. Louis verplaas die druk vierkantig op Ricky se skouers en hy

slaan amper sy swakste hou van die dag – mis die setperk heelwat regs, ook in baie diep rof. Na ‘n paar plofskoot pogings het hy maar die wedstryd gewonne gegee en gaan Louis deur na die Top 8 rondte. Ek moet sê Ricky is ‘n baie aangename jong man en die wedstryd was in ‘n gemaklike gees gespeel. In die Top 8 rondte wag die immergroen Jim Furyk vir ons. Ek het geweet dit gaan ‘n moeilike wedstryd wees want Jim maak nie foute nie en sy gholf was witwarm soos sy oorwinning die vorige week van kan getuig. Van die begin as sit Jim druk op ons met sy baie akkurate naderhoue. Louis se houe is ook nie so skerp soos aan die begin van die week nie en ons moet op die ou einde die knie buig voor Jim. Hy is ook ‘n baie aangename persoon alhoewel hy ‘n taai opponent is wat nie ‘n duim grasie gee nie. My eerste toernooi opi sak was dus baie suksesvol en ek sien uit na die volgende 6 weke wat ek die sak gaan dra. Nou is ons oppad na “The Players Championship” by TPC Sawgrass. Dit is mos die gholfbaan met die eiland setperk by die 17de putjie en alombekend as die 5de Major. Daar is ook $10miljoen op die spel wat dit een van die heel grootste en belangrikste toernooie van die jaar maak. Louis se beserings is iets van die verlede en hy is huidiglik nommer 24 op die wêreldranglys. Ek is van mening dat met sy huidige vorm hy weer binnekort in die top 10 gaan wees. Hou julle oë op julle T.V. stelle en hou asseblief stuif duimvas vir ons volgende klomp toernooie.

Luckily for me things went my way.” He got his final round going after a quiet third round, his worst of the week, which was a twounder-par 71. “Actually, I putted much better today,” he said. “I told myself before the round if my putting came right, I’d do well.” The victory got him into the historic AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open, tri-sanctioned by the Sunshine Tour, The European Tour and the Asian Tour – and that’s something he’s looking forward to. “Watch me – I’m 40 years old and I’m coming!” he said.

e hadn’t won on the Sunshine Tour since 2006, so Vaughn Groenewald really made it count when he took the Zambia Sugar Open at Lusaka GC by four strokes after a closing round of five-under-par 68. He took his third title by holding off the challenge of Jean Hugo, who also finished with a 68, while Zimbabwe Open winner Dean Burmesterfinished with a two-under 71 to finish third, five shots behind Groenewald. “I really didn’t know if I would ever win again over the last few years,” said Groenewald, “so I’m almost in tears thinking about it.” Groenewald made a bogey on the second, but that was the only time he wavered as he quickly recovered from that lapse with two consecutive birdies, and he turned in one-under-par and very much in contention, if not in control. And then he put his foot on the pedal as he came home with four more birdies. “I had

Horan, one quarter of the world’s most famous band at present, caused a stir at the usually reserved Augusta National Golf Club during the traditional par-three event last month. The singer signed autographs for fans, played a tee shot that landed in the water and then tripped over before a television interview while carrying McIlroy’s bag. “Niall and I had a good fun together in the par-three contest at the Masters and I’m looking forward to seeing him again at Wentworth,” McIlroy said.

A Regal Estate that has stood the test of time. From humble beginnings back in 1994, when the clubhouse was officially opened by their first director of golf Hugh Baiocchi and when the pro-shop was a wooden shack atop of the tenth tee, Prince’s Grant has matured like a fine red wine. The Peter Matkovich designed golf course which is part links, part parkland was and still is unique in the fact that it took precedence and was given first bite of the land. The magnificent fifteenth hole which occupies prime real estate which in most developments would probably have been allotted to housing is testament to this. We last played Prince’s Grant some years back so it was with great anticipation that we made our way from King Shaka International to the Estate. For some reason their signage on the freeway has been removed and Stanger is now known as KwaDukuza so keep an eye out for the turn off. We arrived mid-morning and were greeted by Neeta, the cheerful receptionist who showed us to our rooms in the Lodge. The “wow” factor here cannot be over emphasized as you walk into lodgings with panoramic views across the golf course and out over the Indian Ocean. After purchasing some balls and other odds and ends from the well-appointed proshop and having a quick chat with Golf Director Frans Strauss we headed to the driving range to hit a bucket of balls before setting out onto the course. 52

The front nine
• The first offers you a really good chance to get off to a good start; it is a generous par-4 with a wide fairway which is well bunkered on the right. The green is fairly big and the only danger for your approach shot is one bunker left and two right. • The par-4 second is much tighter than the first with a dog-leg to the right, water in front of the green and a steep slope on the left of the green which caught my stray shot and left me with a tough uphill chip. • The third is a fantastic par-3 which sees you off an elevated tee-box with a 15 to 20 meter drop down to the green which has a stream running in front of it, definitely one of their signature holes.
• The fourth is a slightly uphill par-4 with a dog-leg to the right when you get to the raised green. I had a gentle wind behind me but if the wind was stronger or coming into you here club selection can be difficult. Always remember that you can add 10% to your yardages at the coast.
• Fifth is much the same as the fourth with sugar cane fields on the left, both are pretty holes where the wind plays a big role. Both holes offer birdie opportunities. • The first of back to back par-5’s the sixth is touted as Prince’s Grants answer to Amen Corner. It is downhill over a large lake, fairly short but good club selection here is imperative.
• Seven is tighter than six and has a stream running down its entire length. Also downhill with a dog-leg right. The fairway narrows towards the green and with the stream on the right and thick bush on the left you really need to keep it straight.
• A short par-3, eight is fairly straight forward with the wind once again being a factor.
• Stroke 1 for the ninth is fully deserved as this is a tough closing hole with a two tiered green. Out of bounds on the right and a big descent off on the left means that keeping it on the fairway here is the order of the day.

Halfway house
After a really pleasurable front nine it was time for us to enjoy a beer and some food and what else would one have when in KZN than a pie with curry gravy. Absolutely delicious and just what was needed to set us up for the closing nine. Breakfast & lunches are available but as much as the health nuts will disagree, there is little to beat this and when all the latest fads have come and gone remember – the only way to go is a pie and gravy (preferably curry) and a beer!
The back nine
• Ten is very similar to the first from a generous point of view however I found the green to be somewhat tricky. Very scenic as you look out towards the Indian Ocean and when you look back the clubhouse is resplendent and you can see why they use this aspect in so many promotional brochures. • Eleven is a tough par-3 and my four iron into the teeth of the wind was five short, the green is big but there is no bail out left or right.
• A downhill hill par-4 with bunkers galore, the twelth is one of those risk and reward holes where you can take out driver and have a dip at the green, which I did and was rewarded with an eagle two.
• Thirteen is a fantastic par-4 going uphill with a dog-leg right, really, really tight and luckily I played this downwind. An errant tee shot here guarantees a reload. If we had played this nine first I would have been convinced that this was the stroke-1 hole of the course. It is stroke 2. • A blind tee shot makes the fourteenth challenging; it is the third par-4 in a row and a word of caution here not to go long or right with your approach shot. • One of the best and most picturesque holes that we have played in the country, the par-5 fifteenth is tough with bush to the left and out of bounds to the right. Four bunkers lie in wait for a misplaced tee shot and five bunkers jealously guard the green. Of interest here is that the small house on the beach behind the fifteenth green was the first building on the property and it is to be retained in its present form. The house, through which the fence runs, was the Bodasing family’s original beach cottage. Babu Bodasing was an indentured cane cutter who owned the farm in years gone by. It has been redesigned but the foundations remain those originally built by the Bodasings seventy or eighty years ago. • The sixteenth is a fairly short par-4, a long iron off the tee will leave you with a short iron to the green and a good chance to get one back. Don’t stray left though as there is a hazard running from tee to green waiting for new Pro V’s, a real risk and reward hole. This hole is named “Paddyfield” paying homage to the fact that this area was planted to rice by Babu Bodasing. • Seventeen is a delightful par-3 with a long narrow green. A tee shot to the right should feed off the slope towards the green. • Eighteen is a really nice closing hole, with a stream running alongside the left and then in front of the green. This short par-5 is very reachable in two and my birdie here closed off a most enjoyable round of golf on a fantastic golf course.

Summary
Prince’s Grant has won many awards over the years and it is easy to see why. The well-groomed golf course offers remarkable fairways and excellent large paspalum greens. With sweeping vistas of the Indian Ocean and heady coastal forests it is an experience not to be missed. It certainly offers opportunities to both the conservative and the adventurous golfer. With two prevailing winds it can become almost two entirely different courses, in which case course management becomes essential. Creatively designed, this is a golf course of exceptional quality that deserves to be played.
Accommodation The 4 star Lodge at Prince’s Grant has 15 rooms, split between the main Lodge building and the Umdoni Suites annexe. The lodge is decorated with a golfing theme, and has a warm welcoming ambiance. The Umdoni suites are a short walk from the Lodge, and comprise 8 large rooms surrounding a swimming pool in a central courtyard. They are ideal for golf or family groups, and have a small dedicated bar and entertainment area. These rooms were completely refurbished and modernized in 2013. He hasn’t changed. “People like the way he plays, he’s a bit of a gun slinger, goes for all his shots and people want to play like him. It’s not boring old golf. “We need those guys. They’re not going to bring back more senior players but what they’re going to do is make a lot more younger people want to try the game.” Charley Hull

recent Sport England survey found that the numbers of people participating in golf have dropped over the last year. The number of people playing once a week in the year up until October 2014 had dropped from 751,900 to 730,300. Golf’s elitist and exclusive image has, in the past, proved a barrier to attracting new players but Douglas Poole, project director of National Golf Week in the UK is confident clubs are changing. “The newer people running golf clubs are much more commercial,” he said. “It’s like running a fitness centre you need to have members. “It’s the view of many that, when you have an event now, we don’t put on blue blazers and white shirts and collars and ties to present prizes. We do it in our golf gear. “This old fashioned image of plus-fours and thick socks is finished. Within five years we will have changed the face of golf in the UK.”

T
hough they come from different parts of the world — McIlroy from Northern Ireland and Spieth from Texas — there are common threads that weave through both, beginning with a refreshing humility to go with their ridiculous talents and accomplishments, and ending with the simple fact that they both simply get it. Both have a mature-beyond-theiryears veteran mentality about how to handle themselves in the white-hot spotlight. Spieth, as he should be, is highly deferential to McIlroy, who has 17 worldwide wins, including four majors, to Spieth’s five wins and one major. “Hypothetically, if I were to have worked my way up to closer to where McIlroy is at in the world rankings and maybe create separation,

I think that would be really, really cool,’’ Spieth said. “That doesn’t mean that it’s going to be me or him at each event, because the way this game goes and how many great players there are, anybody in this field can easily come out and win. Q - How long does it take to build a green? A – This will depend on a number of things like, - Size of the green - Access to the site - Availability of the amendments - Design - Size of the crew - Complexity of drainage and many more. I would however determine an average size green to take between the region of 2-3 months from the beginning of construction to seeding. Q - What is the average cost of a USGA spec green? \ What is the lifespan of a green? A – Again this will be determined by many factors like, - transport distance between worksite and supplier - size of the green - design and many more factors The average lifespan will be between 10-15 years depending on the location of the course, with this I mean that weather plays a huge role in the lifespan of a green. The upkeep and maintenance procedures by the Superintendent will be the single biggest factor that will determine the longevity of a green.

Q - Can and how do you lengthen this timespan? A – Maintenance procedures like Hollowtining, to ensure good drainage and promote air movement through the soil on a regular interval will help a lot to ensure a healthy green. A consistent program with regards to all maintenance procedures on greens must be followed, this includes a good fertilizing program along with soil samples taken once a year to ensure optimal growth. To me the biggest factor that shortens the lifespan on greens must be drainage. Waterlogged greens causes compaction, lack of air movement, and diseases on the greens. Q - Do you have to rebuild the green completely after this time? A – It is usually recommended to ensure a new growing medium through the entire green Q - What are the different grasses you get on greens? A – We are looking at predominantly bent on most greens, but Paspalum, cynodon(Kweek) and Poa are also great grasses to use on different courses.

A – Grasses that will be used on greens will be determined by factors like, - What you would like to achieve with the grass, factors like green speeds, mainte nance costs, durability, rounds per year, machinery in hand to maintain the grass, water quality and availability and soil conditions. In Natal you will find many Paspalum greens that are very salt tolerant and grows well in the humid conditions. It does take a good maintenance program to keep this grass firm and responsive and for this reason I take my hat off to Superintendents that get these surfaces to perfection. Inland you will find predominantly bent greens along with Cynodon (kweek) in the warmer regions. Most of these greens will have some amount of POA on them! Q - Poa annua is a problem for a lot of golf courses, yet there are courses like pebble beach that uses this grass for the entire golf course. How does courses fight “Poa” and why don’t more courses use this as their preferred grass? A – Poa and the word problem always seems to go hand in hand for some reason, this is and will remain one of those debatable subjects for as long as golf will stick around. If you can provide a good playing surface from POA, then why fight it? If it grows the best in your conditions and you can maintain it, why not use it? What determined that POA is a bad grass? Is it a grass, YES. Can you have beautiful putting surfaces with POA, YES. Why

don’t people like POA then? If I open the floor now to comments we will have to be ready for a very very long debate. To finally answer your question, Pebble beach does get POA perfect, the cost to control POA is very high due to chemical prices, yes it can be controlled with a few products, but be warned that it always looks bad for a long time and then it gets better, and as soon as it gets better, then it is time for the next chemical application. It is a vicious cycle, and that is why I have chosen to maintain it to such an extent that people can’t complain about POA. I have good friends in the industry that inter-seed their greens with POA trivialis every year with great success.
