the Zone Grows
At the Telkom PGA championships last year Telkom Business and the PGA of SA joined forces to give school children an opportunity to experience golf in a fun and exciting way. ome 800 children from schools across Gauteng attended and participated in a Grow Golf Zone which included a Long Term Athlete Development Cyclone, Instruction nets and mini golf course.

Coverage of schools in the area will be more comprehensive and the general public invited to attend on an individual basis. Giveaway packs will be beefed up and radio Jacaranda will offer extended coverage.
A PGA professional and trainees from the Golf School of Excellence supervised each group on the circuit where activities relating to golf specific and more general physical literacy skills were performed. Kids enjoyed a free giveaway pack in a safe area. There was a jumping castle and live broadcasts from Radio Jacaranda added to the vibe.
At this year’s zone there will also be adult swing coaching with PGA professionals. There will be a daily lucky draw of a smart phone for children, a draw for a series of lessons with a PGA member for adults and 20 Level 1 certification courses and a year’s free membership of the Grow Golf Coaches Association up for grabs for school teachers.
Children also went down to the course, saw the big boys in action and experienced the atmosphere of a top Tour event. From the 14th to the 17th of March Telkom and the PGA are taking this winning formula, doing it all again and stepping up a notch.

Bigger purse and bigger stars for 2013 South African Women’s Open The 2013 South African Women’s Open will tee off at Southbroom GC from 19-21 April with an increased purse and a strong international field for this tournament co-sanctioned by the Ladies European Tour (LET) and the Women’s Professional Golf Association (WPGA). Following its return to the international schedule last year, South Africa’s oldest women’s professional golf tournament has raised the stakes in 2013 with an increase in the total prize money from €260 000 to €290 000. Players from at least 20 countries will be represented in this year’s tournament, including defending champion Caroline Masson of Germany and a strong South African contingent of Lee-Anne Pace, Tandi Cunningham, Ashleigh Simon, Stacy Bregman and Nobuhle Dlamini. “It’s extremely important for the development of the South African women’s game at a professional

and amateur level that we have a strong South African Women’s Open on our schedule, and which can offer our players an opportunity to compete against international competition,” said Margie Whitehouse, Chairman of the Women’s Professional Golf Association. “The South African Women’s Open is extremely important to our members and is one of the most eagerly anticipated tournaments on the schedule. With 70 LET participants out of a field of 108 competitors, we are bringing some of the world’s best golfers to South Africa and we are committed to seeing this tournament go from strength to strength,” said Ivan Peter Khodabakhsh, the LET’s Chief Executive Officer.

A visit to Phakalane, Golf Estate Hotel Resort We first visited Phakalane, Golf Estate Hotel Resort in July of 2012 whilst on a visit to Gaborone. Overall we were highly impressed and since we had limited time on that occasion we vowed to return; to play the golf course and to stay over and see exactly what they had to offer. The opportunity arose late last year and with temperatures soaring in Botswana we found ourselves in this wonderful oasis once again.

e arrived unannounced and I have to say that on arrival the staff come across as extremely friendly and welcoming. After settling in we strolled down to the pro-shop to have a chat with Jon Warburton (the club pro) and to book a teeoff time for the following morning. John told us that they had had very little rain since we had last been there however to us the course looked to be fairly green considering the lack of rain. To fill you in, Phakalane Golf Estate Hotel Resort is positioned within the municipal boundary of Botswana's capital city, Gaborone, and lies only 15 km's from the city centre. They have a fantastic Clubhouse and an international standard 18-hole golf course offering the corporate and leisure traveller a host of activities in flamboyant style. WINNING LETTER Dear Sir Quite a lot was made last year about Rory McIlroy arriving at Medinah just ten minutes before his teeoff time, and the fact that he would have missed it were it not for the police car helping him, and so on. I think the real question is: how long before his tee-off was he PLANNING on arriving? Let us do the maths. Had Rory not confused central time with eastern time, and had he gone through the exact same motions that he did, he would have arrived at Medinah at most AN HOUR and ten minutes before his tee-off. However, one has to deduct at least 20 minutes for the help he got from the police, and say another 10 for the rushed job he probably did in getting dressed and packed etc.

Even Saturday club golfers often arrive more than 40 minutes before a betterball round, with just a toaster on the line! Had Rory planned on arriving a few hours before his tee off (as per the usual preparation of a professional golfer before the final round of a major event) his time zone mistake would have been completely irrelevant. Does this maybe tell us something about the lack of importance of the Ryder Cup for Rory, or maybe about the hopelessness some of the Europeans felt when they were 10-6 down? Did Rory plan on warming up at all?

I agree with former captain Colin Montgomerie who was quoted as saying “That is absolutely ridiculous at this level. It's quite unbelievable for the world number one golfer. How this happened I do not know”. Thankfully it didn’t affect his golf and he still beat Bradley but it could have worked out disastrously! I don’t think that this has to do with anything other than poor time management on Rory’s behalf and even though he has had similar incidences in the past I can’t see him doing this again. In my opinion, Nike have a sound investment with Rory Mcilroy. Regards

Slow Play Becoming Hot Topic On PGA If you were able to watch the final round of the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines which was played on a Monday a couple of weeks ago, you have to agree, it was painfully difficult to watch. Tiger Woods, who was leading the tournament needed to finish eleven holes due to the fog out on Saturday’s third round, was in the final group behind Steve Marino, Erik Compton, and Brad Fritsch, had to wait twenty to thirty minutes at each tee, and at times 10-15 minutes in the fairways. It took over four hours to finish that round.

n his post game interview, Woods used some language that I can’t put on this blog to define how he felt about having to wait on every hole. It took him out of his game to the point where he dropped four strokes in the final five holes. He had a nice lead when the day began, so was able to win by four strokes. On the final hole alone, while Tiger and his group waited in the fairway, Erik Compton hit his drive to the right, into the tents lining the fairway, and after taking 15 minutes to identify his ball, get a ruling, take his drop, he hit his second shot into the tents on the left. By the time his group putted out, Tiger had waited almost 45 minutes to hit his second shot. That’s ridiculous, and I don’t blame him for being upset. The action on television was so slow, I was watching re-runs of American Pickers waiting for the next shot. The slow play rules at the professional level are in place, but like a lot of rules with the PGA, are not enforced. As a fan, watching on TV, we get the announcement that a group is being put on the clock for slow play. They continue to play slow, but there is never a penalty, or punishment passed out. I have always thought the rule was unfair to the player in the group that was playing fast, but was March/April 2013
stuck with someone in the pairing that was slow. Why does the fast player get punished by association? Oh! that’s right, no one gets punished anyway. You might remember last year at the Players Championship, where Kevin Na was having trouble pulling the trigger on his shot. He would spend a lot of time in his pre-shot routine, get over his ball, but couldn’t get his backswing underway. He was on the leaderboard, and played the final round with Matt Kucher, who eventually won the tournament. Kevin was spoken to, and told he would have to speed up his game or else. Or else ..what? Na visited a sports psychologist and seems to have solved his problem, but is still a habitually slow player. Like everything else in life, if the PGA doesn’t address this problem, and put some teeth in the rules regarding slow play, it will continue. When the Pros play slow, people all around golf will play slow. It is affecting your round at the local club. The people in front of you are plumb bobbing every putt, and getting a look from four sides of the cup like Tiger does, and the next thing you know, your four hour round of golf has turned into five hours. They need to come down on the people who are habitual violators, without penalizing their playing partners. The PGA is the only one that can fix the problem.

Your Playing Assessment How you assess your round could radically improve your next one, your next event or even turn your season around! Pre event preparation: In your rookie year at what- the tee and what irons you will be hitting into the ever level you have progressed towards, you should greens. Once you have worked out what clubs are realistically have two practise rounds to settle into going to be used the most, these then will be the the course and get comfortable within the new en- ones you get comfortable with and factor into your vironment. Ja ek val ook onder daardie kategorie, want ons glo daar is nou iets nuuts wat my gaan help om die bal 20m verder te slaan.
Daar is nou tans ’n nuwe Cleveland drywer, Ping G25, die nuwe nuwe Taylormade (dit voel of Taylor elke maand iets nuuts uitbring) nuwe Titleist, nuwe Pro V1 balle, klomp nuwe ysters, Puma se nuwe reeks, ens. Dit maak ons almal mal en boonop baie armer want dit is altyd so tussen R 3000 en R 5000 wat nuwe toerusting ons elke keer uit die sak jaag, en hulle inruil waardes is so min dat jy sal gelukkig wees om R 500 te kry vir die ou model. Nou moet ons elkeen maar die vraag vra, is daardie drywer soveel beter. . . ? Mmmm, ek twyvel, wat kan soveel anders wees, bemarking wat vir jou sê hierdie is die laangste drywer ooit – al gehoor?? Daar is geen beter gevoel as om ’n nuwe drywer te koop en hy voel beter en trek beter as die oue. Dit mag miskien baie dieselfde wees, maar wie wil dit nou glo? Dit is mos nou pret om iets nuuts te hê wat almal wil hê, en jy slaan dit nog goed ook. Almal sê jy slaan hierdie drywer baie beter en verder en dit doen jou ego baie goed. Eintlik is dit baie dieselfde as die vorige een maar jy hou daarvan om dit te hoor. Ek het altyd geglo Taylormade bring te gou nuwe drywers uit, maar ek het my siens-wyse verander. Hoe “boring” sou dit gewees het as daar eers elke 2-3 jaar nuwe toerusting uitgekom het? Being the player actually hitting these shots is even more distressing. It can damage self-belief and dent one’s ego quite badly, even impacting other parts of the game. How can a simple shot from a mere 10 metres be so difficult?!

Poor chipping can often relate to a lack of confidence, but if all is in order between the ears then the following article could well address problems in your chipping action. Retaining your levels during the chipping action allows you to create the ideal impact position, giving you control over ball flight, spin and distance. So what are the important areas to look at from a technical and biomechanical point of view in order to keep your levels consistent? Knees and hips are the areas to address – you do not want either dipping or straightening while chipping.

Keep them stable during the chipping action and you are well on the way to hitting quality chip shots. Of course a proviso to this statement is that once the fundamentals are in place some practice will be required relative to strength and depth of shots. Becoming aware of the correct motion is the first step towards improvement and Jan’s advice will help you stabilise the hips and knees while chipping - be it on a flat, uphill or downhill lie. To have stability in the knees and hips when standing on a slope, or even on a flat surface, requires the ability to carry your weight and even a force more than your full weight on one leg, without losing your balance. Physics teaches us the following: Force = Mass x Acceleration This means that when you stand on a scale it will give you your weight, but if you jump onto a scale the force that is initially registering on the scale would be more than your weight. The same is true when standing on one leg. Maintaining balance when carrying your weight on one leg and standing still is one thing, but add a movement like the golf swing, and it requires a lot more strength in those hip and knee stabilizers. Chipping from a slope, whether it’s uphill (Photo) or downhill (photo) requires you to tilt your spine angle towards the lower part of the slope in order to retain “your level”. This means you have to stand in an unnatural position, almost perpendicular to the slope, and still remain stable and balanced to perform the shot. In gym I use a variety of one-legged exercise, like a 1-leg Mini Squat, 1-Leg Dead Lift or step ups to strengthen the hip and knee stabilizers. One can even do things like balancing on one leg when doing Bicep Curls or Tricep Push Downs to improve your hip and knee strength and stability. Maintain your levels and you could well walk off the golf course level headed and score intact.

Tourism Development Centre with golf course planned in Surat, India One of the world’s fastest-growing cities has approved plans to build a destination-worthy convention centre that will be flanked by an 18-hole golf course. The recently approved Tourism Development Centre will bring more growth to Surat, the secondlargest city in the state of Gujarat and the eighth largest in India. The centre is expected to include large-scale meeting space and possibly a hotel. “We are ready to make a dream come true,” Dilip Ravani of Ravani Infrastructures told the Times of India earlier this year. Ravani, which was founded by Virjibhai Ravani, is best known for residential, office, and commercial projects. As best we can determine, the TDC is its largest undertaking.

LPGA unveils International Crown The Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) has announced the launch of its first national team The International Crown is a biennial, global match play competition. Commencing in 2014 it will feature teams from eight countries battling for the right to be called the world’s best golf nation. The tournament will comprise a four-day, match-play format with a total purse of US$1.6 million – of which $100,000 will go to each member of the winning team. Each of the eight countries will be represented by four players.
“At the LPGA, we celebrate great players from all over the world on a weekly basis, but this is the first time we’ll pit country versus country for global bragging rights,” said LPGA commissioner Michael Whan. “Only countries that have produced the best female teams can compete and only four players from any one country will be invited. The International Crown will take women’s golf to the next level and allow fans to rally behind their homelands.” The inaugural tournament will debut July 21-27, 2014 at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Maryland, outside Baltimore in the US. In 2016, the Crown will also take place in the US at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Illinois, host of the 2009 Solheim Cup. The LPGA said the International Crown will feature a limited number of ‘Ambassador Sponsors’ which will be announced in the coming months. This elite level of sponsorship associated with the International Crown will provide media exposure and premier hospitality as well as invitations to participate in the official pro-am of the event. 28

Strong 2012 for US golf industry Figures from the National Golf Foundation show that 2012 was among the US golf industry's strongest years in the last decade. Total rounds played in 2012 were up by 5.7 per cent on the previous year, or more than 26 million extra rounds of golf. Rounds played figures have declined for much of the past ten years, by a total of 11 per cent – the 2012 growth alone recovers more than half of that drop. Almost every state saw an improvement over 2011, but the engine for growth was the northern half of the country, where year-on-year growth average was 9.5 per cent. Improved weather was the biggest influence on rounds played: PGA PerformanceTrak reports a 6.5 per cent increase in playable days nationwide in 2012.

But NGF notes that weather isn't the only driver, with national measures of consumer confidence and spending showing consistent moves upward from the numbers seen at the depths of the recession. PerformanceTrak also reported that median golf fee revenues were up 6.6 per cent at member facilities. But competition remains fierce: the national average for rounds-per-18 holes – approximately 32,000 – is more than 20 per cent lower than it was prior to the start of the building boom in the late 1980s. Course closures also dramatically outweighed openings for another year.

Plans for a new golf complex in Russia A high-powered, government-controlled group hopes to build a 27-hole golf complex in an area of south western Russia famous for two things: its mineral waters and its political turmoil. The complex will be among the featured attractions of Grand Spa Yutsa, which is to take shape in a 2,100-acre special economic zone outside the city of Pyatigorsk, in the Stavropol Krai. This is a part of the nation – the Caucasian Mineral Waters region – that reportedly has more than 130 hot springs, some of which are said to have “unique healing properties”. For more than a century, these steamy waters have helped to make the area a popular vacation destination. > 34

Today, despite thinning traffic, only the resorts along the nation’s Black Sea attract more tourists. Grand Spa Yutsa is being developed by Resorts of Northern Caucasus OJSC, an entity whose chairman, Akhmed Bilalov, is an influential player on Russia’s sports scene. Bilalov, who reportedly speaks fluent English, was a member of the group that prepared Sochi’s winning bid for the 2014 Winter Olympics, and he currently serves on the executive board of Russia’s Olympic committee. In addition, he’s the chairman of the Russian Golf Association. At Grand Spa Yutsa, Bilalov hopes to build a mineral spa, several other spas, a dozen or more hotels, an indoor water park, an equestrian center, a para-gliding area, and other recreational attractions, including nine- and 18-hole golf courses. Both Bilalov and Russian government officials hope that Grand Spa Yutsa will spark the construction of similar resorts in the area, but the venture is no sure thing. The main reason: The mineral waters region is a hotbed of ethnic strife. March/April 2013
“Hundreds of people are killed every year in violent attacks in the region,” the Eurasia Daily Monitor noted earlier this year, and many of those attacks take place in the politically volatile republics of Chechnya and Ingushetia, which are just a short drive from Pyatigorsk. as the region is a hotbed of ethnic strife. This strife has already proved to be a stumbling block. In 2010, Bilalov’s firm set out to build some ski resorts in the North Caucasus Mountains that it hoped would be comparable to those in Chamonix, France and Park City, Utah. But the effort hasn’t gone far, largely because investors are wary of security risks. What’s more, while the Russian government may have good intentions, these days it doesn’t have deep pockets. It’s willing to spend some money on Grand Spa Yutsa’s infrastructure but private groups will have to foot the bill for the resort’s many attractions. No doubt, Bilalov has major obstacles to overcome. But Russia’s golf business will benefit if he can get it into hot water.

Trump files plans for second course The Trump organisation has submitted preliminary plans for the second course at its new Scottish resort in Aberdeen. To be known as the Mary MacLeod Course, after Trump's Scottish-born mother. The new 18 has been designed by Martin Hawtree. No timings have been confirmed for the planned development of the new course. Trump had previously pledged to invest no more money in the resort unless a projected offshore wind farm was blocked by the Scottish Executive, though he later backtracked on this, and has hinted that the resort's hotel may also go ahead in the near future. The first stage of the detailed application process with Aberdeenshire Council has now begun with the submission of indicative plans for the new course to the southern side of the site. Joint and Several Liability for Events Organisers, Sponsors,Venue and Owners South Africa’s stature as a world-class destination for large sporting events, most notably the recent Afcon Cup and the Soccer World Cup before that, is growing tremendously. Given this status, there is increasing scrutiny by regulators, noted in the recently promulgated Safety at Sports and Recreational Events Act (the “SASREA”), to address the inadequacies which have been prevalent in many sports and entertainment events. This is according to Deon Francis of Routledge Modise Inc. “Some of these inadequacies include insufficient emergency and essential services, insufficient resources being made available by local authorities, inadequate public liability insurance, a lack of proper safety certification and structural engineering certificates for temporary structures, a lack of proper safety and security measures including crowd control at events. Much of the flouting of these requirements has been driven by the fact that enforcement of punitive measures to ensure proper safety and security measures at events has 38
been left wanting, but these days are long over. An event that is found to be lacking in proper controls and safety measures could find all involved coordinating parties from organisers, sponsors, venue operators and owners all held liable for any damages and legal claims,” warns Deon. In order to address these inadequacies the Department of Sports and Recreation, through the promulgation of the SASREA has now placed the responsibility of ensuring safety and security at events on the shoulders of controlling bodies, event organisers and stadium/venue owners. >

Given the spirit of the Act, it is evident that these entities will be jointly and severally liable in the event of any civil liability arising at any given event. Dani Ettridge, of Aon South Africa, a leading insurance brokerage and risk consultants, adds that SASREA has serious implications in terms of insurance liability cover. “SASREA has a very similar effect as the Consumer Protection Act. In terms of the CPA, where damages arise as a result of defective products, consumers can seek recourse against any one of the parties in the supply chain, be it the manufacturer, the wholesaler or the retailer. Similarly, in terms of the SASREA, in the event of individuals being injured at events, they can choose to seek recourse against any of the stakeholders in the event, be that a sponsor, a supplier or indeed an advertiser. It would then be for the parties to sort out amongst themselves who should be liable and to what extent. This would not affect the injured party though in that the injured party could look to any of these entities for compensation,” she says. March/April 2013
“According to the provisions in SASREA, it is no longer viable or sufficient for only controlling bodies, event organisers and stadium/venue owners to have public liability cover. Whilst the SASREA does make public liability insurance cover mandatory, in practice usually only your controlling bodies and venue/stadium owners would enjoy public liability cover whilst the other parties would, in most instances, either not have public liability insurance or be indemnified by those who do have such cover. However, such indemnity clauses are now unlikely to be enforceable against third parties. It is imperative that each and every party involved takes out sufficient public liability to protect their own risks and not rely on the insurance policies of others,” explains Dani. The Act now demands that all parties involved, including sponsors, need to take an active role in vetting the planning of events. They can no longer associate their name with an event with no knowledge of the safety and security measures in place.

Sponsors, as stakeholders in an event, can be drawn into a suit alongside the event organiser, venue owner and others. It is essential that all parties take a pro-active approach to ensuring that certain minimum standards are met around the planning and organising of any event and ensuring compliance with SASREA. “Most crucially, sponsors should also ensure that they have adequate events liability in place with an insurer who is aware of their exposure in this regard, and not rely on a standard business public liability policy. Each stakeholder must ensure protection by way of a policy in their own name and not rely on cover arranged for the other parties,” explains Dani. One of the major concerns coming out of the industry is that the regulatory change imposes harsh penalties, and there is a lot of uncertainty as to how this legislation will be interpreted and how the requirements can be incorporated into pre-event planning. “Without precedent there is always the fear of being the proverbial guinea pig in a test case. It is true that the majority of event organisers and meeting planners welcome the opportunity to add a professional approach to their business and to raise industry standards to the benefit of their clients. To this end, it is essential to cover all your bases and make sure you have adequate liability covers in place for any eventuality. And most critically, it is imperative to provide your insurance broker with a copy of any legal contracts you have in place in terms of an event, to ensure that any provisions in your legal contract will be covered under your insurance liability cover,” concludes Dani. Routledge Modise and Aon have produced “A Practical Guide to SASREA” which provides an essential guide to any company party to an event to ensure that all their bases are properly covered.

USGA to Direct Resources toward Pace of Play Issues In Golf As part of its ongoing commitment to promote a more welcoming, enjoyable and sustainable game, the United States Golf Association (USGA) has announced that it will develop a broad set of initiatives to identify challenges and solutions regarding pace of play issues in the game of golf. Speaking at the Association’s annual meeting in San Diego, USGA President Glen D. Nager outlined the main components of the multifaceted program, which will include: • Analysis of key factors known to influence pace of play • Development of a pace-of-play model based on quantifiable data • Improvements to the USGA Pace Rating System • On-site assistance at golf courses to help managers assess and improve pace of play • Creation of player education programs “The cry that pace of play has become one of the most significant threats to the game’s health has become only louder over the last year,” said Nager. “Industry research clearly shows that slow play and the amount of time it takes to play a round of golf detract from the overall experience and threaten to drive players away from the game. This problem touches every golfer, from the professional to the elite amateur to the collegiate player to the millions of recreational golfers at both public and private facilities.” 42

PGA of SA honours Els and Oosthuizen Major winners Ernie Els and Louis Oosthuizen were named Honorary Members of the PGA of South Africa. The duo was presented with a letter from the Chairman of the PGA, Paul Marks and Honorary Member player badges by PGA of SA chief executive Ivano Ficalbi during the final round of the European Tour’s Volvo Golf Champions at Durban CC. Ficalbi said the PGA of SA is proud to acknowledge Els and Oosthuizen for their achievements, their service to the game of golf and their ambassadorship of South Africa. “The PGA of SA honours those professional golfers who have achieved extraordinary heights in golf, like winning a Major or a World Cup of Golf, with Honorary Membership,” Ficalbi explained. “Ernie was first presented with Honorary Membership when he won the World Cup of Golf with 54
Wayne Westner in 1996, but the Board unanimously agreed that we should honour Ernie again after his fourth Major victory at the Open Championship at Royal Lytham & St Annes last year. “Louis won the 2010 Open Championship with a runaway victory at St Andrews and came agonisingly close at the Masters last year. The Jock History The Jock of the Bushveld Tournament which is being played at the Nelspruit Golf Club (6-12 May 2013) has an interesting history as one sees from the following extract: In 1967 J.J. Van Rensburg and Rip Riphagen created a new topic of conversation in the pub at the Nelspruit Golf Club - a place where most bright ideas originate. Lively discussion ensued amongst the "manne" for many a memorable evening with major contributions from Christo Basson and Ken Myers and the concept of Jack was born.
until 4.00am on Sunday morning then curled up in the lounge and went to sleep. He was awakened for his tee off time but informed Ken Myers that he required some "hair of the dog". The wow duly retired to the pub for a "few" gins after which the old maestro recorded a 141 gross for the day and ken retired to bed - for the day!
The idea was taken to Committee where it was met with very mixed feelings. However the first Jock was played from Thursday to Sunday and consisted of two 18 hole competitions each day with the 36 hole Lowveld Open on the Sunday.
Jock has not only survived since those early days, it has prospered and since 1969 the tournament has been oversubscribed each year and it is reputed to be the largest amateur tournament of its kind in the world.
A feature of the first Jock was the presence of Bobby Locke who entertained with his ukulele

SA Women’s Amateur Match Play Champion Bonita Bredenhann earns her 2013 European Tour Card Bonita, who did not have to pre-qualify for the event due to her WAGR points, was lying 3rd on 16 under par after 4 rounds. The field of 140 was then cut to the top 66 players for the 5th and final round. Bonita shot a 77, 5 over par, and finished tied 9th and joined an elite group of 30 players, one of only 4 amateurs, who earned full playing rights for the 2013 European Tour. As a Namibian citizen, in January 2011 the WGSA decided to include non-SA citizens in their Player Rankings and in two years Bonita climbed quickly up the ladder and finished in 4th position last year. Qualifying for the European Tour was a fantastic achievement and we heartily congratulate Bonita and wish her every success as she pursues her dream.

Porteous defends SA Stroke Play title Haydn Porteous became only the third player in the history of the South African Stroke Play Championship to defend his title at the Hyatt Regency Oubaai Golf Resort and Spa last month. Porteous closed with a final round of 69 to win by two strokes on 13-under-par 275. Werner Ferreira took second place on 11 under with a final round of 69, and Argentina’s Alejandro Tosti finished third on 10 under with a closing 70. Porteous joins Dale Hayes (1969 and 1970) and David Suddards (1978 and 1979) as the only players to have defended their national Stroke Play titles. “It was something I wanted to do, and I’m very proud to have achieved it, and to be named alongside those players as having done it. That’s quite something,” he said. “It was important for me to defend this title because I’m hoping that by next year I’ll be professional,” said Porteous. That process has already begun, with Porteous employing caddie Douglas Mthembu, who is a regular on the Sunshine Tour and has worked with Richard Sterne and Trevor Fisher Jnr. Ferreira was not too dissatisfied with his runners-up finish. The Pretoria golfer can look back on a successful week in which he earned his national colours as a member of the senior team to compete in a test against Scotland at Leopard Creek in March, and was a constant challenger in the Stroke Play, which he led for 36 holes. “Haydn play really well and deserved to win. I’m just glad that I didn’t throw it away on the final day. I shot 69 under the pressure of a final round, and he went out and won it,” he said.

SA Juniors win International Triangular South Africa's top juniors claimed an emphatic victory over their peers from the SAGDB and Scottish Golf Union National Squad in the fourth Triangular Invitational at Randpark GC last month. 68

They have all competed at provincial level and they really enjoyed going up against the top South African juniors. “They are hungry for competition and they are at the stage now where they want to play these guys regularly. They want to improve and to learn and
this Triangular Invitational experience will give them some great motivation. “Personally, looking at the talent I watched out there on the course, I think South African junior golf is going to produce an amazing amount of champions in the future.”
Nobuhle does it again Horizontal rain and strong winds greeted the players at the 36-hole Eastern Cape Stroke Play Championships, but this did not seem to bother the two visiting Gauteng North players, with Nobuhle Dlamini shooting a one-under par 72 and Magda Kruger a solid par 73. Carrie Park and Monja Richards both followed closely on 75. In the afternoon, Bianca Theron found her form and shot a level par 73 in spite of the windy conditions. Carrie only managed a 77 and Nobuhle and Monja carded 78’s. Nobuhle’s morning subpar round was enough to ensure that she retained her title. Tuesday’s weather was more favourable for the start of the Match Play Championship. Maggie du Toit clinched her match on the 27th hole against Nicole Fourie, and in the afternoon, lost to Nobuhle on the 17th hole. In the Semi Finals, Nobuhle had an easy win against Crystal Cooper 5/4 whilst Ji Sun Kang had to go down the 19th to beat Chevonne Botha. Nobuhle played flawless golf in the final match with three birdies on the front nine leaving Ji Sung a big hill to climb. The match finished on the 13th hole, and Nobuhle remains the double champion for the second year in succession. Justine Botten “B” division and Cathy Bezuidenhout “C” division, both won the stroke and match play trophies in their respective divisions.
Gauteng North player dominates at home Junior Championship Magda Kruger laid down her marker by winning the GNGU Junior Girls Open in superb style. Magda, who has just returned from participating in the Annika Invitational in the US, was playing in her first event on home soil in 2013. Services Golf Club hosted the tournament and although the morning started with a light drizzle, perfect weather prevailed for the rest of the day. After a level par March/April 2013
first round, Magda came out for the afternoon round determined to lift the trophy. With an eagle on the 9th, five birdies and only one bogey, her gross 66 was unbeatable. In second place Bianca Lohbauer from Paarl Golf Club played steadily over the two rounds but could not catch Magda. Golf is worth €15.1 billion annually to Europe’s economy a new study has revealed.
Golf’s €15.1 Billion Impact T
he report, produced by SPORTS MARKETING SURVEYS INC. (SMS INC.) and commissioned by The Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA) and supported by other leading bodies including the European Tour and European Golf Association, highlights the importance of the golf industry across the continent. The game’s impact is particularly significant in Great Britain & Ireland where it is valued at €6.1 billion – a total that accounts for 41 per cent of the European total.
Key economic findings across the 27 European Union nations plus Norway and Switzerland, which represent a combined population of 510 million, show the sport is responsible for a minimum of 180,000 full time jobs and employee wages of €4.4 billion. And based on models employed by the Australian Golf Industry Council (2010) and Golf2020 in the USA (2011), the results show total expenditure per golfer throughout Europe of €1,911 which is in line with Australia (€1,917) and America (€2,007) golfing counterparts. 70

BRS Golf: Online Green Fee Revenue Up By 15% In 2012
O
nline tee time booking revenue continued to grow in 2012, according to the latest results from BRS Golf, developer of the UK & Ireland’s market leading online booking system. Total online revenue for golf clubs using the BRS system during 2012 was £7.5 million, an increase of £1 million or 15% compared to 2011. Managing Director of BRS Golf Dr Brian Smith commented: “It’s reassuring to see that in spite of the challenging economic climate and the wettest summer in 100 years, online booking revenue is continuing to grow for the seventh year in a row.”

“We’re confident this growth trend will continue for many years. Firstly, because more golf clubs are adopting online booking each year and selling tee times online. Secondly, it’s becoming easier for golfers to go online, find and compare prices, and book their round of golf at their convenience. Thirdly, golf clubs are starting to improve their use of yield management, marketing and working with 3rd parties to distribute their tee times. All of these factors are fuelling the growth of online booking.”
Average online revenue per club down An anomaly that has emerged from this year’s statistics is the 13.5% drop in the average online revenue per club, decreasing from £16,600 in 2011 to £14,337 in 2012. Smith said “This should be no surprise. I would put this down mainly to the awful summer weather in 2012, and the fact that it is being compared to 2011 when the growth rate at 81% was unusually high. The continuing economic situation has also had an impact. Nonetheless, £14,337 still represents a significant amount for many clubs’ bottom lines.”
Average green fee price reducing slightly Smith also reported that the average price of a casual online visitor green fee across all clubs using the BRS system has again gone down, albeit marginally: “The average green fee across all our customers in 2010 was £24, in 2011 £23 and in 2012 £22. This is symptomatic of more clubs going online, and the continuing development of a more open and increasingly competitive market place.” Continued on p74

Third parties playing their part The impact of the 3rd party re-sellers is revealed to be growing at the same rate. “According to our research,” Smith explained, “the 3rd party distribution companies – including Teeofftimes.co.uk, GolfNow.com and Teetimes.co.uk – also experienced growth of 15% in 2012. Of the £7.5m booked through BRS Golf, £1.5m was booked through 3rd parties i.e. a 20% share of the overall revenue, underlining the contribution these 3rd party re-sellers are making to golf clubs.”
Getting to grips with yield management In view of all these factors and trends revealed by the BRS Golf market research, Smith has some useful guidance: “Golf clubs looking to maximise the benefit of selling tee times online should focus on getting a system like BRS Golf in place. It has all the tools you need to sell tee times online, build a marketing database of visitors’ e-mail addresses and mobile ‘phone numbers, implement a marketing campaign, create reports, and make yield management work for your club.” “One way to develop a better understanding of yield management is to work with the 3rd party resellers. They are experts in yield management and have a wealth of knowledge that you can tap into, on top of the potential additional revenue.”

Fichardt steps up to win windy Africa Open Darren Fichardt coped better with the wind than his pursuers on the final day as he managed his way around East London GC to a two-stroke victory in the €1-million Africa Open Golf Challenge. He beat South African compatriot Jaco van Zyl and France’s Gregory Bourdy with his 16-underpar, and Garth Mulroy was alone in fourth, one stroke behind the second-placed pair on 13under-par after his closing 67. “I knew it was going to be a tough day playing with Jaco,” he said. “I know his game, I know he’s good, I know he can putt, I know he can get it up and down – and when I saw the wind was blowing like it was, I knew it was going to be a tough test.” It gave Fichardt his 13th Sunshine Tour title and his fourth on the European Tour. It was also the second year in a row that he has won a European Tour title after he won last year’s Saint-Omer Open, and it brought him his first European Tour title on home soil. vantage when he gets it: He has a 100 percent record of winning his European Tour events when he has led or shared the lead going into the final round. He led by three at the 2001 Sao Paulo Brazil Open (reduced to 54 holes); led by three at the 2003 Qatar Masters; five at the 2012 Saint-Omer Open and two at the 2013 Africa Open. It’s time to aim higher for Fichardt now. “I want to move that one step further – I’ve won on the European Tour four times now and I need to start getting into the majors and world events. I want to contend in those events; that will be my next step forward,” he said.

Tandi on Tour The 2013 Ladies European Tour has kicked off with the start of the season commencing in Australia and New Zealand earlier this month.
T
he first event, the Volvik RACV Ladies Masters was played at the RACV Royal Pines Resort on the Gold Coast, Queensland. Always very tropical with the weather conditions and the course presents itself to be very scorable even though in past years the event has been reduced to a 3 round tournament due to flooding and high winds. This year the winning score of -13 was posted by Karrie Webb and the only South African’s participating were Connie Chen, Lee Anne Pace and Laurette Maritz who all missed the half way cut. From there the next event was the ISPS Handa New Zealand Woman’s Open held at Clearwater Golf Club in Christchurch, New Zealand. This event was won by teen sensation and amateur Lydia Ko on a score of -10. The highest finishing South African was Connie Chen on -3, tied 14th place, followed by Lee Ann Pace on score of +3 and 50th position.

Those short term goals would be to stay focused on my routines for each and every shot. Ideally to eliminate bogeys entirely from the scorecard would also be great so I would like to have more bogey free rounds of golf this season. Staying focussed more on the process and shot routines rather than the outcome helps you to stay in the present while playing as well as manage tension or excitement.
So while some of the South African girls have already started their season, the rest of us, myself included, will be starting in China or Morocco for our first events. Morganna Robbertze will be back on Tour this year after having secured a provisional card at Tour School in December. It will be great to have more players on Tour and strengthening the South African contingent. Also with a new season come new and revised goals, dreams and ambitions so I thought I would share mine with you: I would very much like to win an event this year. I feel that I have been knocking on the door a few times the last few years but maybe just been lacking the confidence to pull it off. The constant struggle for sponsorship and financial aid still seems to be very elusive for all of our South African Woman Professionals and a win would be life changing. However, this will be my fifth season out on the LET now and I am very comfortable with the travel, logistics, planning and the level of competition. So with that in mind, I feel that with all my preparation over the last three months and a more determined attitude that a win is on the horizon for me. It is tough to set goals for where you would like to finish on the Order of Merit as they need to be realistic and achievable. You also never know how the year will pan out so I rather set goals for myself within each round and event that I play. Having these short and mid-term goals will give you small steps of success while heading towards the ultimate goal which is to win and have best season possible. March/April 2013
Statistically, my putting average has been a bit too high at times so that is another aspect that I will continue to work on throughout the season, hence the saying, “drive for show and putt for dough”. My off season practice and training has gone well and I will continue to work on all aspects of my game through the year. My mental approach is to be relaxed and confident yet I am also very hungry for a win and to play each and every event to the best of my ability. I have finally felt this last year that I am a part of the Tour and I am comfortable being out there competing and that I am having so much more fun which I think is key to enjoying golf and bringing in good results. At the end of the day, do what you love and love what you do.

A new vision for SA women’s golf After a period of intense planning by many dedicated parties in which the challenges of the past were addressed, South African women’s golf is on the brink of an exciting future and the Women’s Professional Golf Association is driven to take it there.

outh African women’s professional golf has entered a new era with the Women’s Professional Golf Association (WPGA) electing a new board with a more business-like structure, and with a commitment to consolidate and revive women’s professional golf in this country. The return and huge success of the South African Women’s Open in 2012 was a seminal point in the local women’s game, and a starting point for not only a return of South Africa’s oldest women’s professional tournament to the international calendar as a full Ladies European Tour event, but also a renewed injection of enthusiasm into women’s professional golf. 84
With the support of South Africa’s leading touring professionals such as Lee-Anne Pace, Tandi Cunningham, Ashleigh Simon and Stacy Bregman who are delighted to be playing on home soil once again in the prestigious 2013 SA Women’s Open to be played at Southbroom GC on the Hibiscus Coast in KwaZulu-Natal from 19–21 April, women’s professional golf should have a solid foundation to build on. This will also be one of the first Ladies European Tour and WPGA events to have live international and local TV coverage. An exciting development tour, The IGT Ladies Pro Tour, is being supported by the WPGA and is spearheaded by player representative Morgana Robbertze. Five tournaments will be played between now and the SA Women’s Open to assist the local professionals and amateurs to get tournament ready leading up to the SA Women’s Open. The first tournament will tee off at Centurion Country Club from 26-27 February. “The standard of golf on the South African women’s amateur circuit is incredibly high and this growing wave of talent is desperately in need of a competitive local platform to gain experience in preparation of joining the international professional ranks,” said former professional and administrator Barbara Pestana. “We have several South Africans playing on the Ladies European Tour and five players who are ranked in the top 50 on the LET Order of Merit, and if the top amateur tournaments are anything to go by, there is a wave of talent waiting in the wings and more coming through the junior ranks. “We need investment in the future of our rising stars. We need to provide these players with a competitive platform to bridge the gap between amateur and professional golf. And we need to give non-travelling professionals the chance to make a living in South Africa.” Mandy Adamson, a three-time winner of the South African Women’s Open, has echoed these sentiments. Torben triumphs at Sunshine Tour QSchool Torben Baumann shot an incredible 62 at Schoeman Park Golf Club on the final day to reach a 26-under-par total and claim victory at the Sunshine Tour's Qualifying School. The German was electric over the final 18, carding 31 on either side of the turn to finish the tournament 10 shots better than last year's winning total of 16-under-par. "This is really special and I feel very good now. The 265 Qualifying School entrants played two rounds at both Bloemfontein and Schoeman Park Golf Clubs before a cut to the top 60 and ties, who played a final round at Schoeman Park, after which the top 30 and ties received cards. This year the mark fell at six-under-par, with 36 golfers making the grade and earning playing privileges for the 2013 Sunshine Tour season. The scoring was incredible over the week and Baumann led the charge, carding 33 birdies and two eagles on his way to rounds of 70, 70, 67, 65 and 62. On Saturday the final three-ball carded a collective 18 birdies and two eagles. The tournament had 42 international entrants and reflected the growth of the Sunshine Tour, which now carries six events co-sanctioned with the European Tour. "I decided in November to come here where it's warm during the European winter," said Baumann. "I plan to try for a European Tour card in the future, and the co-sanctioned events are a big advantage of the Sunshine Tour. I am really looking forward to the year." In spite of the quality field, nine amateurs earned cards, all of them South African. Leading the amateur front was Duane Keun, who carded a finalround 67 to claim sixth place. The full 68 players who made the cut will receive Big Easy Tour cards, but Saturday's happiest were the 36, who eagerly signed entry forms to the Telkom PGA > 86

They are only worried about the PSL where the money is. 9. What does South African soccer have to do to be more competitive? I think they have to play more games together – simple.

5. Was it always soccer or did you have other sporting interests? No not just soccer, I played all sports during my schooldays; cricket, rugby, tennis etc.
