LE T TER TO THE EDITOR

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Send us your letters, giving us your views, opinions or articles of interest (max 500 words). The most interesting letter will be published in the next edition of SA Golf Trader. To the Editor Firstly, thank you for another enjoyable edition of the magazine. I thought I’d share an experience that surprised me recently. Over the past few months, I had noticed my back becoming increasingly sore after walking a round of golf. It made me wonder whether using a pushcart was placing more strain on my back than simply carrying my clubs. The current winter conditions certainly don’t help. Between the pushcart itself, a full cart bag, extra clothing, an umbrella, and all the other bits and pieces we golfers seem to accumulate, I realised I was probably pushing at least 10 kilograms more than I would be carrying in a lightweight stand bag. With the weather looking good one morning and knowing I was playing a course with long walks between greens and tees, I decided to leave the pushcart at home and carry my bag instead. That meant travelling light, an ultra-light carry bag, only the essentials, no ball retriever, no umbrella. The difference was remarkable. Whether it was the lighter load, the more natural walking motion, or simply wearing lighter clothing, I finished the round feeling far fresher than I normally do. In fact, I almost felt like playing another nine holes, although perhaps that would have been pushing my luck! Instead, I went home and took the dog for a two-kilometre walk. The following day I still had a slight ache in my back, but nothing that would have stopped me playing another round if the opportunity had arisen.

4

My pushcart is a modern, low-resistance model, so I wasn’t expecting such a noticeable improvement. I had suspected that pushing the cart might have been contributing to the discomfort, but I certainly didn’t expect the difference to be so significant. Regards, Ronald Murphy

Dear Ronald Thank you for sharing your experience. It’s an interesting observation and one that I’m sure many golfers will relate to. While pushcarts are designed to reduce the effort of carrying a golf bag, everyone’s body responds differently. For some golfers, pushing a cart may place additional strain on the back, while others find it far more comfortable than carrying. That said, thousands of golfers happily use pushcarts without any problems at all. The important thing is finding what works best for your body. If carrying your clubs has eased your back pain and left you feeling fresher at the end of the round, then perhaps you’ve found your answer. Regards

ROOKIE MAKAMA SETTLING IN WELL AMONG THE ELITE

Vuyisani Makama says while turning professional has had its own challenges in the early stages of the season, he is beginning to find his feet among the elite in the professional ranks. The 19-year-old Makama turned pro early in the year and has had a fair taste of the professional game, having started several events on both the Betway Big Easy Tour and the Sunshine Tour.

his early observations of what professional competition feels like. “There’s a lot more consistency here and that means a lot of hard work must be put in. For me, the main thing has been trying to get comfortable because I was a little nervous in the first few events. I’ve had to adjust to a lot of things, travelling expenses and all. But it has been fun with a lot of lessons along the way.”

“Through the first six events, I think the main difference is the quality of the players; better players,” said Makama of

The Soweto-native has played a few Betway Big Easy Tour events this season, with the bulk of his starts coming on the Sunshine Tour. “I have played two Big Easy events this season and a couple of the main Tour events, and I know I still have a lot of work to be done,” he said, while assessing his campaign so far.

“That’s why I kind of turned pro a little early so that I can have a bit of time to learn and settle and find my feet; and have time to learn from my mistakes.” Regarding his short-term targets, Makama, like many others, aims to retain his Sunshine Tour status this season and build on from that when the next season begins. The Betway Big Easy Tour is the Sunshine Tour’s feeder circuit and enjoys the support of the legendary Ernie Els, among other patrons.

“The key, I think, is for me to keep learning and behaving more professionally on and off the golf course. Because there is a big difference between playing amateur golf and professional; in the open amateur events, a 10-over score will make the cut sometimes, whereas here, if you don’t have numbers in the negative, you’re going home.

Green Reading: Mastering the Art of Reading the Break

Key Fac

Green Reading: Mastering the Art of Reading t

Performance Tip brought to you by Chris Wright – BSI Coach

Putting is often regarded as the most delicate and mentally demanding aspect of golf. While many players devote hours to refining their stroke mechanics and distance control, one of the most decisive skills on the green is the ability to read it correctly. Green reading is the art of interpreting how slopes, contours, and surface conditions will influence the ball’s path. Mastering this skill can dramatically lower scores and instil confidence in every putt. What Is Green Reading? At its core, green reading involves analysing the putting surface to predict how the ball will roll. It requires visualizing the intended path and adjusting aim and stroke accordingly. A skilled green reader can detect subtle breaks and account for factors such as grass type, moisture, and surface texture. These details, often overlooked, can be the difference between a missed opportunity and a clutch putt. Why Is It Important? Many missed putts are not the result of poor technique but of misjudging the green. Correctly reading the terrain can turn a near miss into a make, saving valuable strokes and building confidence. It is a skill that distinguishes average golfers from accomplished ones. How to Read the Green 1.

Study the Layout – Observe the green from behind the ball and the hole. Identify slopes, ridges, and valleys, and note the overall tilt.

2. Look for Clues – Grain direction, patches of longer grass,

Putting – Aim at a spot along the break rather

System – Visualize the hole as the centre of a e slope runs toward 3 o’clock, aim left of the hole nsate.

Conclusion Green reading blends science and intuition. With patience, observation, and practice, golfers can transform putting from guesswork into strategy. Techniques like aim point targeting and the clock system simplify complex reads, helping players save strokes and elevate their game. Next time you step onto the green, take a moment to study the terrain—your scorecard will reflect the difference.

Behind every successful golf club is a dedicated team working tirelessly to ensure everything runs smoothly, and at Heron Banks Golf Course, Retha Benson is one of those invaluable people. Having been with the estate for five years, including the past three in her current administrative role, Retha has become a familiar and friendly face to members while helping to keep the club’s day-to-day operations running efficiently. Interestingly, Retha’s path to golf club administration wasn’t a conventional one. Before joining Heron Banks, she studied Psychology and Sociology, skills that undoubtedly help her in dealing with the diverse personalities and relationships that form such an important part of club life. Ask Retha to describe a typical day, however, and she’ll quickly tell you there really isn’t one. “I don’t think there is ever a typical day at work,” she says. “There is always something that happens that influences the day you had planned in your head.” While administration forms the backbone of her responsibilities, her role extends far beyond paperwork. A large part of her day involves interacting with members and organising the social events that have become a popular

WATERFALL CITY TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS SUPPORTED BY ATTACQ AND WCMC Caitlyn Macnab may have only turned professional in 2025, but the past season’s R&A Rookie of the Year on the Sunshine Ladies Tour showed massive composure to win the Waterfall City Tournament of Champions supported by Attacq and WCMC by one shot on eight under par. It was a tense finish though, with three players tied for the lead with only one hole to play on Royal Johannesburg’s East Course. Macnab had to sink an eagle putt on the 18th hole to win the tournament outright, and she did just that for a 69 to win by one shot from the Sunshine Tour’s 2025/26 Fortress Rookie of the year, Luis Carrera (69). July | August 2026

Macnab, who led from day one at Royal Johannesburg, started Sunday’s final round with six pars in a row before birdies on the seventh and ninth holes got her round going. Drop shots on the 11th and 14th holes however opened the door for Mexico’s Luis Carrera who took the outright lead on seven under par after sinking a birdie putt on the 18th hole. Pieter Moolman (66) ended in third place on six under par after finishing with four birdies over the last five holes, and one shot clear of Gabrielle Venter (70), who ended on five under par and secured fourth place.

WILSON GOLF LAUNCHES NEW DYNAPWR FORGED IRON -Ultimate players distance iron constructed using cutting-edge AI Technology-

Wilson Golf has unveiled the new DYNAPWR Forged iron, designed using the latest cutting-edge AI Technology for golfers seeking the ultimate players distance iron with a softer, more responsive feel, combined with a premium look at address.

“We wanted to build on the success of the previous award-winning model, while taking strides to elevate the performance to the next level” Building on the success of its predecessor and the critically acclaimed return of the DYNAPWR® franchise, the new DYNAPWR Forged iron is crafted from Forged 8620 Carbon Steel and features a PKR-CUP face design combined with the brand’s

AI-generated Variable Face Technology for greater distance and consistent launch windows to elevate playability. Every model in the DYNAPWR irons family incorporates the unique AI-driven PKR-CUP face design, engineered to maximise ball speed and consistency across the entire hitting surface. By wrapping the face onto the sole, PKR-CUP creates a thinner, more responsive hinge region that flexes efficiently, particularly on low-face strikes, to generate faster ball speeds and higher launch. This construction also relocates the weld line away from the striking area, giving engineers greater control over face performance, reducing part-to-part variation, and ensuring more forgiveness and enhanced consistency.

S P E C I A L F E AT U R E - W I L S O N - S TA F F M O D E L I R O N S Harnessing the power of advanced AI simulation, Wilson engineers have removed the power holes found on its predecessor and meticulously optimised clubface thickness to enhance flex and energy transfer at impact. The result is explosive distance and accelerated ball speeds, achieved without compromising the precision and control demanded by discerning players.

“The new iron is a statement of Wilson’s dedication to innovation and tradition. By combining forged precision with AI-driven design, we’ve created an iron that delivers distance, control and feel in perfect harmony” The cavity back design of the new DYNAPWR Forged iron is strategically infused with TE-031 Urethane in irons 3 through 9, precisely engineered to dampen vibrations at impact. The result is refined acoustics and a noticeably smoother, more satisfying feel with every shot. “We wanted to build on the success of the previous award-winning model, while taking strides to elevate the performance to the next level,” said Ben Hanser, CAD Engineer at Wilson Golf. “The new iron is a statement of Wilson’s dedication to innovation and tradition. Complementing its premium look, the iron’s high MOI construction and strategically lowered centre of gravity promote greater stability and consistency, producing higher launching and more forgiving shots with exceptional stopping power on the greens. Joining the lineup, the new DYNAPWR Forged iron complements the DYNAPWR range, which is designed primarily for aspirational golfers who value added distance and forgiveness on occasional mishits. Alongside these sits the DYNAPWR Max, the longest and most forgiving iron in the range, offering maximum playability for golfers seeking confidence and consistency throughout their game. John Collier Annual Survey WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY Friday 5 June was World Environment Day, a moment established by the United Nations in 1972 that has grown into one of the largest global platforms for environmental awareness and urgent action. In the golf world, few organizations have answered that call more consistently than Johncolliergolf. For over twenty years, the John Collier Survey has been the most authoritative benchmark of sustainability in South African golf. Every March, clubs across the country are guided against the three pillars

of ESG: environmental stewardship, social responsibility, and governance excellence. The findings are published, the data is shared, and club leadership walk away with the practical insight they need to make better decisions for their ESG journey, their members, and their business. This year, Atlantic Beach Links was named the top ESG performing club in the country for 2025/26. Furthermore, the Stellenbosch Golf Club and the Arabella

Estate Golf Club were recognised for special mention. In a country with so many world-class golf courses, that recognition means something. It is proof that the work is landing, that clubs are responding, and that the bar keeps rising. The timing of this award, announced on World Environment Day, is not coincidental. It is a deliberate statement. Golf and ESG responsibility are not opposites. Managed well, golf clubs can be genuine custodians of environmental stewardship, social responsibility and governance excellence. The John Collier Survey exists to make sure that potential is recognized, measured, and realized. From a tourism perspective, this matters enormously. The modern golf traveller is asking questions that go beyond course conditions. They want to know that their July | August 2026

travel expenditure supports something responsible. South Africa’s combination of world-class golf, Big 5 safari, and independently benchmarked sustainability credentials is a genuinely differentiated proposition. The John Collier Survey gives that story credibility. To Atlantic Beach Links, Francois Swart, CCM, CHA: congratulations. Your recognition is fitting. South Africa is not just a great golf destination. It is developing into one of the most responsibly managed golf landscapes on the planet. If you have any queries, why not contact the John Collier Survey through our website at https://johncolliergolf.com/, or via email ajcollier@telkomsa.net.

KNOW YOUR GOLF CLUB’S

GENERAL MANAGER Interview with Johan Hugo, Silwerstrand Golf & River Estate

SAGT: Please tell us a little about yourself prior to your appointment at Silwerstrand Golf & River Estate? Johan: My background is in Management Accounting, but my career has taken me through several different industries. I started in the corporate manufacturing sector before spending 12 years running my own real estate business. I then took on the role of General Manager at an electrical construction company before joining Robertson GC and Silwerstrand Golf & River Estate. My wife and I have three young boys, and we were looking for the opportunity to raise our family in a close-knit country community. Having grown up in a small town myself, and with my wife originally from Robertson, this felt like the perfect place for us. SAGT: What led you into pursuing a management career in the golfing industry? Johan: Golf has always been a passion of mine, but what attracted me most was the opportunity to work with people. A golf estate is a unique environment where hospitality, sport, property management, finance and community all come together. Every day presents new challenges, and I enjoy working across so many different areas to create an 42

environment where people feel welcome and proud to be part of the club and estate. SAGT: In your opinion, what is the most important thing to run a successful golf club? Johan: Without question, it’s the people. You can have outstanding facilities and a beautiful golf course, but it’s the team behind the scenes that creates the experience. Building a strong culture, communicating openly and empowering staff to take ownership are essential. I’ve always believed that people make the difference, and when your team shares the same vision, success naturally follows. SAGT: Describe a typical workday for you at Silwerstrand? Johan: There really isn’t a typical day, and that’s one of the things I enjoy most about the role. My mornings usually begin by catching up with our department heads to discuss priorities and operational matters. The rest of the day is filled with planning, meetings, emails, administration and working closely with our Trustees and Golf Club Committee. Whenever time allows, I make a point of

www.sagolftrader.co.za

July | August 2026

getting out onto the golf course and around the estate to engage with staff, members and homeowners and to stay connected with the day-to-day operations. SAGT: What are your biggest challenges managing a golf estate? Johan: Managing a golf estate means balancing the interests of many different stakeholders, all with their own expectations. One of the biggest challenges is building trust through clear and consistent communication while helping members and homeowners understand the governance structures, Constitution and rules that allow the estate and golf club to operate effectively. It’s not always possible to please everyone, but it is important that every decision is fair, transparent and made in the best interest of the community. SAGT: At Silwerstrand you don’t have the typical Western Cape Weather conditions with a lot less rain, how do you manage the water situation throughout the year? Johan: Water management is one of our highest priorities. Fortunately, we have a valuable water allocation from the Breede River, which provides a reliable primary source for irrigation. During the hotter summer months, neighbouring farmers also assist us with temporary water allocations when required. We continue to invest in our irrigation infrastructure and manage our water usage carefully to ensure we maintain excellent playing conditions while using this valuable resource responsibly. SAGT: With consumers already being careful on how they spend their money these days, what is your plan to attract people to the club? Johan: Our goal is to provide genuine value for money. We want visitors to enjoy an outstanding golf course, quality food, friendly service and a welcoming atmosphere at affordable prices. At the same time, we want the club to be more than just a place to play golf. July | August 2026

Through family events, themed evenings and social gatherings, we’re creating a destination where members, homeowners and visitors can spend quality time together. We want people to leave feeling that they’ve had a great experience and can’t wait to come back. SAGT: Slow play is one of the biggest problems in golf today, how do you manage slow play at Silwerstrand? Johan: Pace of play is a challenge faced by golf clubs around the world, and it’s something we take seriously. We’re strengthening our on-course management through dedicated marshals, improved monitoring and ensuring tee times are managed correctly from the very first group. Good communication, efficient management of golf days and keeping the course flowing all contribute to a more enjoyable experience for every golfer. SAGT: Does your position require you to be available on weekends, evenings, and holidays, and if so, does this place demands on your personal life? Johan: Absolutely. Golf and estate management don’t operate according to normal office hours, so there is always an expectation that the General Manager is available when needed. Finding the right balance between work and family life is important, and I’m fortunate to have a very supportive family who understand the demands of the role. Having that support allows me to give my best to both my family and the community I serve. SAGT: What do you enjoy doing in your free time? Johan: Family always comes first. I enjoy spending as much time as possible with my wife and our three boys, whether it’s outdoors or simply enjoying the slower pace of country life. Like most South Africans, I also enjoy getting together with family and friends around a braai. Those moments are a great way to unwind and recharge.

COMEBACK KROG SEALS MAIDEN SUNSHINE TOUR TITLE IN MOPANI ZAMBIA OPEN under par, one shot clear of Jason Roets, who signed for a final round of 75. Krog, who ended in joint seventh place at this tournament two years ago and who has had multiple top-10 finishes in his Sunshine Tour career, went into the final round in joint 14th place on one over par. Zimbabwean Stuart Krog became a first-time Sunshine Tour winner by clinching the Mopani Zambia Open title by a single shot at the Nkana Golf Club in June.

“It’s something I’ve dreamt of for the last couple of years and I’ve had a couple of close calls. I can’t really process any of the feelings right now. It’s going to take a while,” an overjoyed Krog said.

Krog closed with a 66 to finish on five July | August 2026

It was an impressive comeback after Krog opened the tournament with a 76 that left him in joint 68th position, before he climbed the leaderboard thereafter with rounds of 72 and 69. “I’m so excited. I mean, being four over par through two rounds I knew I was going to need a big weekend and a big final day. I just played dream golf. I loved every second of it and still can’t believe it. “I just tried to keep calm, putt well, and hit good shots. I’m glad I got it done” Krog said. In a tournament where only 10 golfers finished under par, and with overnight leader Roets struggling on the final day, Krog rolled in seven birdies and dropped

46

only one shot on his way to the clubhouse lead on five under, with a tense wait for the final group to finish behind him. A birdie for Roets on the 11th hole saw him move two shots clear, but a run of three bogeys in three holes on the 13th, 14th and 15th dropped him to one shot behind Krog, and from which he was unable to recover from over the closing holes. Haydn Porteus, the Sunshine Tour’s Comeback Player of the Year last season, finished in joint third place on three under par with fellow South African Keagan Thomas, both signing for final rounds of 73. Defending champion Samuel Simpson (70) shared fifth place on two under par with Frenchman Pierre Viallaneix (75).

WALTERS BACK IN WINNER’S CIRCLE AFTER 15 YEARS IN SUNBET CHALLENGE Justin Walters not only had to wait 15 years for another title, he had to also dig deep to achieve it in winning the SunBet Challenge hosted by Sun Boardwalk at Humewood Golf Club in May. Walters closed with a 72 to finish on 15-under par, one shot clear of Daniel van Tonder (67) and Jacques Blaauw (69) to become a three-time Sunshine Tour winner. He went into the final round with a four-shot lead but found trouble on the front nine with three bogeys in four holes and turning in three over for his round. This opened the door

for the chasing pack to not only close in, but to also move past the overnight leader. With the lead changing hands a couple of times during an eventful final round, Van Tonder took the clubhouse lead on 14 under par with his trademark strong finish that included three birdies over his final four holes. Blaauw came home just as strong, also finishing with three birdies in his last four holes. But Walters edged ahead with his two birdies on the 15th and 16th holes on his way to victory.

environment featuring golf, residential and lifestyle components, this project is designed to deliver a seamless living and hospitality experience.

The announcement follows the formal signing of the agreement during a recent visit to South Africa by Mr. Tonino Lamborghini and his executive team, who spent time experiencing both Zimbali Lakes and the surrounding region before establishing the partnership.

Beyond the project itself, the partnership is expected to contribute positively to the regional economy through employment creation, tourism growth and foreign investment opportunities.

This milestone represents a significant chapter in the international expansion of the Tonino Lamborghini brand and reflects growing confidence in South Africa as a destination for luxury hospitality, investment and globally recognised lifestyle developments. For Zimbali Lakes and its developer, IFA Hotels & Resorts, the partnership represents an important step in positioning the destination within an international luxury landscape.

Set against the backdrop of coastal landscapes, indigenous surroundings and an evolving lifestyle destination, Tonino Lamborghini Suites and Residences Zimbali Lakes represents the meeting of two shared philosophies, a commitment to quality, an appreciation for design excellence, and a vision centred on creating places intended to endure across generations. The introduction of the Tonino Lamborghini brand to Africa is not simply the arrival of a new hospitality and residential name; it is the beginning of a legacy defined by international prestige, thoughtful design and enduring sophistication.

SAGA AND WGSA USHER IN NEW LEADERSHIP WITH VAN SCHALKWYK AND DE WET North West’s Peet van Schalkwyk and Gauteng North’s Madeleine de Wet were elected as the new Presidents of The South African Golf Association (SAGA) and Women’s Golf South Africa (WGSA) respectively in May. Van Schalkwyk, who managed the South African team to a historic first Eisenhower Trophy triumph at the 2025 World Amateur Team Championships in Singapore, succeeds Henk Smith after serving four years as Junior Vice-President and Vice-President, while De Wet takes over from Susan Andrew following a distinguished three-year term as WGSA Vice-President. Thinus Labuschagne from Limpopo was elected SAGA Vice-President after serving two years as Junior Vice-President, while WGSA welcomed Mpumalanga’s Petricia Buurman as its newly elected Vice-President. Mpumalanga’s Coenie du Preez steps into the role of Junior Vice-President. Van Schalkwyk assumes office exactly 50 years after competing in his first Inter-Provincial Tournament. He represented North West from 1979 to 1998 and began managing the province’s premier team in 2000. His administrative career started in 1995 and included terms as North West Golf Union Vice-President and President, while he has also served on the SAGA Election Committee since 2020. “It is a tremendous honour to be entrusted with the leadership of The South African Golf Association,” Van Schalkwyk said. “The game in South Africa continues to grow because of the strong partnerships between SAGA, Women’s Golf South Africa and GolfRSA.

Umkomaas golf course was first constructed, as a 9-hole layout, in 1913 but was expanded to 18 holes in 1926. In 1932 reknown course designer Robert "Bob" Grimsdell re-designed the course, capitalising on the natural contours of the land and taking advantage of the glorious sea views - in fact, most holes offer great views of the warm Indian ocean. The course layout has remained largely unchanged and as a result, one of Umkomaas' unique features are the raised greens, thanks to over 100 years of top-dressings and treatments. Although not overly long, the course offers a great challenge for low handicappers, especially when the coastal winds blow. It is however forgiving for even an occasional golfer making it the perfect option for families and groups. Well placed bunkers and undulating fairways mean that those seeking to card a low round need to think their way around the course whilst those looking to simply have fun will enjoy themselves too. Umkomaas is a great choice for those wanting to get the whole family out into the fresh air. We offer exceptional family membership packages and the opportunity to learn to play via our KidzGolf programme. Living up to our reputation as the Friendliest Club, Umkomaas offers a warm welcome to visitors both on and off the course. Competitions are held weekly on Wednesdays and Saturdays and visitors are always welcome. We look forward to welcoming you soon!

in recent years, particularly among women and girls, and I believe there is tremendous opportunity to build on that momentum. “I look forward to working closely with GolfRSA and SAGA to continue creating pathways for young talent, strengthening our unions and ensuring that more players across the country have access to opportunities within the game.” Labuschagne, a respected businessman and long-serving golf administrator, earned his PGA diploma in 2008 and began his service in amateur golf as Club Captain at Chrome Golf Club. He served as President of Limpopo Golf Union from 2017 and joined the SAGA executive in 2019. He also managed the victorious July | August 2026

South African teams at the 2025 Africa Region 5 Golf Tournament and the 2026 All-Africa Junior Team Championship in Kenya. “Junior golf remains incredibly close to my heart,” said Labuschagne. “I am passionate about growing the game among young players and helping create opportunities for the next generation to develop their skills and compete at the highest level.” Buurman, currently the Vice-President of Mpumalanga, has been involved in golf administration since 2014 and served in several roles within Mpumalanga golf before being elected President of Mpumalanga Women’s Golf in 2024. A CONVERSATION WITH JESSE VERSTER Golf course superintendent. Port Shepstone Country Club.

SAGT: - You have been in the industry for a very long time, what made you choose this career? Jesse: When I was young, I knew quite a lot about greens, and being a scratch golfer I knew what golfers wanted on the course. The greenkeeper at the time left and the Executive pulled me in to help and the rest is history.

SAGT: You are also the golf director at Port Shepstone CC, how do you manage your time between all the duties? Jesse: Yes I am. I have the pro-shop as well with two staff members working in the shop. I have daily meetings with them over a cup of coffee to make sure things run smoothly.

SAGT: You also had a very successful amateur career, did you ever consider a playing career? Jesse: Yes, I was very fortunate, i represented Natal for five years at amateur level and then turned Pro 20 years ago when I also did my PGA degree.

SAGT: You have a very interesting nickname, tell us a bit about it? Jesse: I got the nickname Papwa at the age of six because of my grip which is the same as the late Papwa Sewgolum.

SAGT: What path did you follow to become a golf course superintendent? Jesse: I basically taught myself. I did a lot of reading, and I also learned a lot from other greenkeepers helping me at times.

74

SAGT: What is the best and worst part of being a golf course superintendent? Jesse: The best part is when you get compliments and everything at the club runs smoothly, the worst is when diseases start hitting you on the greens, that’s when you need to be on top of your game!

S P E C I A L F E AT U R E - A L L A B O U T G R E E N K E E P I N G SAGT:Do you think it should be mandatory for each golf courses to close one day per week for maintenance?

SAGT: Port Shepstone CC has always been known for its superb greens, what are the biggest challenges to maintain such good putting surfaces?

Jesse: I would love to be able to do that but unfortunately here at Sheppy we need the feet, finances is key for us. We only have six staff and me cutting now and then in summer time when it gets really busy.

SAGT: People always complain about inconsistent bunkers, how difficult is it to maintain consistent bunkers and do you implement general checks and how? Jesse: For me the key is regular aerating, testing the soil and using the correct fertilizer. You have to be on top of things everyday.

Jesse: We test our bunkers on a regular basis and with me playing twice a week, I also make sure to go into bunkers just to double check.

SAGT: How big a difference does climate and location play in golf course maintenance? Jesse: We are very fortunate at Port Shepstone CC, we always have nice weather here, but it definitely plays a role at other golf courses with changing weather conditions.

NPL BRINGS CREATINE NITRATE TO SOUTH AFRICAN MARKET FOR THE FIRST TIME Two creatines. One serving. South Africa hasn’t seen this before. New formula combines two forms of creatine in a single, stimulant-free serving Most creatine supplements do one thing. NPL’s latest does two… and the South African market is getting it first. NPL Creatine Nitrate combines Creatine Monohydrate and Creatine Nitrate in a single formula, pairing the most researched creatine on the market with a newer compound that brings something monohydrate alone cannot: nitrates. That combination - 3g of each form per serving, 5g total creatine and 1g of nitrates - has not been available as a local product in South Africa until now. The science behind it is easy enough to understand. Creatine Monohydrate feeds the ATP system, which is how muscles access energy fast under load. Creatine Nitrate adds nitric oxide production to that equation. More nitric oxide means wider blood vessels, better blood flow and more oxygen reaching muscle tissue mid-workout. The two mechanisms work in parallel: one pushes energy production, the other improves delivery. Gym-goers know the end result as muscle pump. Endurance athletes will feel it as sustained output rather than the familiar drop-off in the final sets or the closing kilometres. Even outside the gym or training grounds, the broader effects are worth noting. Regular creatine use is associated with increased muscle mass, reduced cramping and measurable improvements in cognitive function, making this relevant to people who train as much for mental sharpness as for physical output.

than it might initially appear. A large section of the fitness market, particularly women and those managing caffeine sensitivity, has long wanted creatine’s benefits without the pre-workout cocktail that often comes bundled with them. NPL Creatine Nitrate works as a standalone supplement or alongside an existing programme. “South African athletes and gym goers have been asking for more from their creatine,” said Cherrie Blackmore, Marketing Manager at NPL. “Stacking two creatine forms with nitrates in a clean, stimulant-free formula gives them the performance and the pump in a single product. That’s a meaningful step forward for what the local market has access to.” NPL Creatine Nitrate is available now through NPL’s retail and online channels. The winter shakedown: 7 bulking mistakes that are costing you gains 1. You’re eating more, but not enough of the right things Volume without structure is just eating. If your protein is low, your body has nothing to build with regardless of how much food you’re moving. Fix the structure first: set a daily protein target (a useful starting point is 1.6g per kilogram of bodyweight) and treat hitting it as non-negotiable. Calories matter, but protein is the one number that determines whether those calories build anything.

4. You’re under-eating on rest days

2. You’re skipping the hardest meals to prepare

Muscle is not built in the gym. It’s built during recovery, which means rest day nutrition still matters. Keep your protein target the same and drop calories only slightly - no more than 200 below your training day intake.

Breakfast and post-training are the two windows most people cut corners on. Cooking a proper high-protein meal at 6am or straight after a session takes time most people don’t have, so plan for that instead of pretending it won’t happen. 3. You think dirty bulking is a shortcut It isn’t. Eating everything in sight adds fat as efficiently as it adds muscle, sometimes even more effectively which is not the goal. Work out your maintenance calories, add 300 to 500 on top and hold that range. A controlled surplus is enough to drive growth without burying it under fat you’ll spend summer trying to shift.

5. You’re training the same way you did during summer Cut-season training is built around preserving muscle. Bulk-season training should be built around adding it. Shift towards compound lifts: squats, deadlifts, rows, presses -then increase your weekly volume gradually and pull back on cardio. If your programme hasn’t changed since cut season, your results won’t either.

6. You’re not hitting your protein target consistently 50 grams of protein per meal sounds straightforward until you work out how many whole-food meals it takes to get there three times a day, every day. A high-quality mass gainer (something like NPL’s ProGains, which delivers 50g of protein per serving alongside a meaningful calorie load) fills that gap on the days when a full meal isn’t happening. It is not a replacement for food. It is a solution for the meals that don’t.

your calories and protein are landing where they should. Use a free app for two weeks, not forever, just long enough to calibrate your eye. Most people who feel like their bulk isn’t working are under their targets by more than they think. Knowing that is the first step to fixing it. https://www.npl.za.com/

7. You’re not tracking anything Gut feel is not a bulk strategy. You do not need a spreadsheet obsession, but you do need a rough daily sense of whether

Tees are one of the highest traffic areas on the course.

Turf types: Bermuda – Good for non-frost regions

We need to improve our maintenance if we want to improve our ability to withstand traffic. It is not always practical to enlarge tees however we can improve our wear tolerance through maintenance.

Kikuyu – Good for frost regions

Tees are hammered by constant traffic and deserve a little TLC.

Turf Tips

ng Tees Rye - Great option for overseeding in autumn

4. Pigments – a cheaper alternative to overseeding. These are not colourants – they are scientifically formulated products to protect your plant from cold or heat stress. 5. Wetting agents – Qualibra is a fantastic tool I use year round. It removes water off the playing surface, holding 21 % more moisture in the root zone and improves rooting and plant health considerably. Winter:

Fescue - Heat and drought tolerant – a great option for high traffic areas

Start your “winter foliar” programme with the Talking Turf Recovery Mix + Ryder – this biweekly spray makes the world of difference to your plant health and traffic tolerance SPRING: (ONCE YOUR SOIL TEMP REACHES 18 DEGREES CELCIUS AT 12H00)

All Tees deserve TLC: 1. Water – are you applying 65 -75 % of ET? 2. Nutrition – are you feeding according to your soil results? 3. Plant growth regulators – a great tool in summer to improve density, reduce divots and increase rooting.

1. VERTICUT 2. HOLLOW TYNE – 16MM TYNE & DRAG THE SURFACES – USE YOUR GOOD CORES TO BUILD A NURSERY OR FILL IN WEEK SPOTS ON OTHER TEES 3. APPLY A GRANULAR FERTILIZER ACCORDING TO YOUR LATEST SOIL RESULTS 4. APPLY YOUR INSECTICIDE TARGETING EGGS TO REDUCE YOUR POPULATION & DAMAGE DURING THE SEASON 5. ONCE YOUR PLAYING SURFACE IS COVERED START YOUR PGR (Nomow) PROGRAMME (500 ML/ HA NOMOW EVERY 21 DAYS IS A GREAT RATE) to improve density, reduce divots and improve wear tolerance. Please free to contact sue@talkingturf.co.za or willem@talkingturf.co.za if you are ready to take your tees to a new level.
