Dear Ed I recently heard someone suggest that the days of a father playing ball with his children outside are numbered. The argument was that interactive computer games such as the Wii have taken over, and that children will gradually turn their backs on traditional sports in favour of televisions and computers. What utter nonsense.

As a parent of young children, my experience is quite the opposite. Outdoor play is very much alive and well. Children still crave the simple joys of kicking a ball around or hitting a few shots in the garden.

Golf, in particular, is a wonderful family activity.

It offers uninterrupted time outdoors and creates the perfect opportunity to enjoy quality moments with family and friends. Beyond that, it provides excellent exercise in a beautiful environment. Studies show that walking a golf course can reduce bad cholesterol, burn calories, help prevent heart disease, improve posture, and increase oxygen flow in the body.

Golf also teaches children valuable life skills. It encourages concentration and instils important values such as respect, integrity, sportsmanship, problem-solving and camaraderie. As they grow older, it can even become an effective tool for networking and relationship-building.

Above all, golf is a game for life. Few sports allow a parent, child and grandparent to play together on equal footing. Real sport, I believe, will always play a meaningful role in our children’s lives.

I couldn’t agree more that while computer games form part of modern life, there are very few activities more rewarding than playing rugby, soccer, golf, or any sport, in the park with your children.

Golf, in particular, deserves greater encouragement. More children should be introduced to the game through driving ranges, family rounds, and by attending tournaments, just as they do for rugby, soccer or cricket.

In his last shot of a defining year, Schaper chipped in for eagle to beat American Ryan Gerard in a playoff and win the AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open at La Réserve Golf Links in December.

In the last three weeks he finished second in the Nedbank Golf Challenge in honour of Gary Player, first in the Alfred Dunhill Championship and first in the AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open.

On a windy Sunday at La Réserve Golf Links, Schaper produced a final round of 64 including three birdies in his final four holes to finish at 22 under par. Gerard, playing behind him, was on the 18th one shot behind and had a scare when he thought his ball had moved when he addressed it on the fairway. He was cleared by a rules official and went on to make an incredible birdie from the greenside bunker to tie Schaper, closing with a 66.

“It is an incredible golf course. When we played it for the first time in 2023 it had only been open for a couple of months and it was a bit young.

But two years later it has matured incredibly well and the playing surfaces are as good as I’ve seen anywhere. It has to be perhaps the most stunning golf course I’ve ever seen in my 32-year tenure on the DP World Tour,” said Miguel Vidaor, Tournament Director for the DP World Tour.

John Collier Annual Survey SUSTAINABILITY AND THE HUMBLE SPEKBOOM During December and January break many golfers may have visited different parts of the country and may even have played golf within areas such as the Cape floristic kingdom with its famous fynbos or even in the Savannah bushveld area with its famous trees, i.e., the baobab, and grasses such as the red thatching grass.

However, how many golfers, as they travelled through the Karoo really appreciated the impact of the humble spekboom and the work being carried out within the Eastern Cape Albany thicket areas, to reintroduce this plant species, which over years has been decimated by urban development and agriculture - goats for one, love spekboom!

Many people do not notice or even appreciate what has been lost over a long time, as has been the case with the spekboom, which provided a closed canopy and micro-forest of unique plant species supporting birds, insects and small animals or mammals.

Now that 2026 is here, why not consider how the possible propagation of the humble spekboom at your golf club can support the

recovery of this marvelous plant species?

At the same time the initiative would neatly complement your club’s ESG sustainability journey and in particular the three pillars of sustainability namely (“E”), (“S”), and (“G”).

In terms of environmental responsibility (“E”) think about the benefits of spekboom, namely its carbon storage ability - a single hectare can store roughly 6 tons of CO2 a year, and may eventually generate revenue through high integrity carbon credits, or smart water usage or enhancing biodiversity revival – spekboom shades leaf litter, and builds a micro-climate which gives other plants a chance to germinate, while providing food and habitat for wildlife.

In terms of social responsibility (“S”) spekboom has a cultural value in that it is deeply embedded in indigenous knowledge and heritage.

In terms of governance and economic responsibility (“G”) consider re-imagining golf course employment roles as creating green jobs and work which is sustainable not only from planting and land preparation for spekboom but also for community

education which may lead to awareness campaigns on the benefits of spekboom for the community and simultaneously building on the ESG sustainability narrative about your golf club and the game of golf in general.

This approach is not a pipe dream.

Where recently the United Nations environmental program (UNEP) named South Africa’s thickets restoration programme as one of its world restoration flagships. Several organisations are involved at this flagship program, one of which is the Return to Thicket organisation based in Tokai, Cape Town with their primary restoration area around the Fish, Sundays and Gamtoos Rivers.

In this regard there are at least 10 golf clubs that fall within this primary restoration area which could embrace the UNEP flagship programme while in addition many clubs throughout South Africa could also implement their own restoration programmes.

Are there any challenges with planting, and looking after spekboom? Not really, it needs minimal water - it doesn’t like to have “wet feet’ to use a gardening phrase, and is hardy, so it will pretty much look after itself.

For many clubs the ESG sustainability journey may seem

overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be.

When sustainability sits with one person, it will fail. Because ESG isn’t a department, it’s an operating model. ESG sustainability lives in finance, procurement, human resources, operations, compliance, communications and public relations. Given to one person, with no mandate, no alignment nor cross-functional mandate it is no wonder club’s feel that ESG sustainability is difficult to implement. Much like the humble spekboom, which needs a team effort to propagate, the trick is to distribute responsibility and thereby if ESG sustainability is everybody’s responsibility, then it finally becomes nobody’s mystery.

KNOW YOUR RULES WRONG BALL In match play: If you make a stroke at a wrong ball, you get the general penalty (loss of hole). If you and your opponent play each other’s ball during the play of a hole, the first to make a stroke at a wrong ball gets the general penalty (loss of hole). But if it is not known which wrong ball was played first, there is no penalty and the hole must be played out with the balls exchanged.

In stroke play: If you make a stroke at a wrong ball, you get the general penalty (two penalty strokes) and must correct the mistake by continuing play with the original ball by playing it as it lies or taking relief under the Rules: The stroke made with the wrong ball and any more strokes before the mistake is corrected do not count. If you do not correct the mistake before making a stroke to begin another hole or, for the final hole of the round, before returning your scorecard, you are disqualified.

JAPANESE GOLF GREAT 'JUMBO' OZAKI DIES AGED 78 Japan’s most successful professional golfer, Masashi ‘Jumbo’ Ozaki, passed away on the 23rd of December at the age of 78.

Nicknamed Jumbo because of his length off the tee, Ozaki won 94 times on the Japan Tour and topped the country’s order of merit 12 times.

He was in the top 10 of golf’s rankings for nearly 200 weeks and was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2011.

Ozaki was a professional baseball player January | February 2026

before switching to golf and winning his first tournament in 1973 at the age of 26, with his last coming when he was 55.

He had top 10 finishes at The Open, Masters and US Open and used to take a sushi chef with him when he played away from Japan “so that he and his entourage would feel more at home outside of their homeland”.

Ozaki also ventured into singing and had three singles in the Japanese charts in the late 1980s.

Steenberg on the Rise Change in golf clubs is often spoken about in hushed tones, but at Steenberg Golf Club the last few months have been anything but uncertain.

Instead, they signal a clear intent: a resetting of leadership, a sharpening of focus, and a renewed ambition to elevate one of the Cape’s most respected courses back up the national rankings.

The period has seen the departure of a long-serving custodian of the golf course and the arrival of two new figures tasked with shaping Steenberg’s next chapter—one overseeing the golfing experience as a whole, the other entrusted with the condition and character of the course itself.

After nearly a decade at Steenberg, Golf Course Superintendent Robbie has moved on to pursue the next phase of his career within the golfing industry. His tenure coincided with some of the most important recovery and consolidation years in the Club’s recent history. Arriving during the aftermath of the challenges faced in 2016, he was instrumental in stabilising the course, refining cultural practices, and steadily improving green quality. Under his guidance, the course matured year on year, gaining consistency in both presentation and playability. His legacy is a solid agronomic foundation on which Steenberg can now build further.

Stepping into this role is Jarryd Pietersen, appointed by Golf Data as the new Head Golf Course Superintendent. Jarryd brings with him a strong grounding in turfgrass management and agronomy, having worked in high-performance environments where detail, discipline, and long-term planning are non-negotiable. What drew him to Steenberg was not only its reputation, but the engaged and knowledgeable golfing community that surrounds it. His mandate is clear: to build on what already exists, refine standards further, and ensure that the course consistently challenges golfers while remaining enjoyable across all levels of play.

Alongside this transition on the course, Steenberg has also appointed a new Director of Golf, Quintin Byleveldt, whose arrival marks a significant moment for the Club’s broader strategic direction. Quintin joins Steenberg with

a career rooted entirely in the golf industry. After holding senior operational roles at Sun International, he moved to Pinnacle Point as Golf Operations Manager and was promoted to Director of Golf within two years. During his tenure, Pinnacle Point climbed from 20th to 10th in South Africa’s Top 100 rankings—an achievement that speaks not only to course quality, but to the overall experience delivered to golfers.

Quintin’s approach has consistently balanced course development, operational excellence, and member experience, with a strong understanding that rankings are not won through conditioning alone. A competitive golfer himself, playing off a low single-figure handicap, he brings both professional insight and a player’s perspective to the role. Since his arrival, he has

Together, these appointments point to a clear and deliberate goal: to raise Steenberg’s golfing experience and course standards to a level that naturally drives its rankings upward. This is not about quick fixes or cosmetic changes, but about aligning leadership, agronomy, and operations around a shared vision of excellence. Course conditioning, playability, pace of play, service

standards, and the overall atmosphere all contribute to how a club is perceived—by members, visitors, and ranking panels alike.

Steenberg’s ambition is to reclaim its place among the country’s top 30 courses and to push beyond that through strategic, sustainable improvements. With a strong foundation laid by those who came before, and fresh expertise now in place, the Club appears poised for a period of purposeful growth.

JARVIS WINS IN THRILLING PLAYOFF AT VODACOM ORIGINS OF GOLF FINAL Casey Jarvis claimed his second victory in three weeks on the Sunshine Tour when he won the Vodacom Origins of Golf Final in arguably the most thrilling finish on the Sunshine Tour this season at the Pezula Golf Estate in November.

Jarvis signed for a final round of 65 to finish regulation play tied for the lead with Barend Botha, who carded a 64, on 24 under par.

Both golfers had already thrown everything at each other over the closing holes of their final rounds as they each made twos on the par-four 17th and then both birdied the 18th hole.

Then they decided to take it further.

The drama continued in the playoff as they each birdied the par-five 18th twice to remain locked in a battle for the title.

But Jarvis eventually made the breakthrough when he eagled the third playoff hole against Botha’s birdie.

The victory comes shortly after Jarvis’ win in The Hyundai Open in early November.

It’s also the second victory in a short space of time with his new caddie

There were two holes-in-one during the week, as well as two rounds of 62 from Bryce Easton and Jarvis himself, who built his around a second nine of 29. And the halfway cut of six under par was the lowest on the Sunshine Tour for the season.

A CONVERSATION WITH MARY SIBIYA Golf course superintendent. Mount Edgecombe Country Club.

SAGT: When did you realise that turf management was the industry you want to take further?

Mary: I have been working at Mount Edgecombe Country Club for about 30 years but my love for turf management began around 2020 and that’s when I realised I wanted to pursue it as my career.

SAGT: How does your normal day start?

Mary: Waking up at 3:00 am, preparing myself to go to work and leave my house at 4:00 am. I start working at 5:00 am in summer and at 6:00 am in winter as we have to make sure that the golf courses here at Mount Edgecombe are maintained and immaculate before the golfers come to play. I thoroughly enjoy preparing the golf courses with my team to enhance golfers experience here at Mount Edgecombe Country Club – it is my pride and joy.

SAGT: What path did you follow to become a golf course superintendent?

Mary: Here’s the path I followed to become a golf course superintendent: • Studied Horticulture (B.Tech) at UNISA • B.C. in Landscape Turf Management • Currently studying an online Greenkeeping course with Turf Academy SAGT: Who has been your biggest mentor so far in your career?

Mary: My mentor is Mike Wallington, a professional

agronomist who has worked for Matkovich Maintenance for many years. I have learned a lot from him, not just about the day-to-day work of greenkeeping, but also how to handle the different challenges that come up, whether it’s weather, turf health, or keeping all the machinery running. His guidance has helped me improve my skills and make sure the golf course is always in top condition for members and visitors.

SAGT: What is the best and worst part of being a golf course superintendent?

Mary: The best: Seeing the golf courses in great condition and the greens running smoothly. My main focus is on presenting healthy, carpet-like greens for golfers to enjoy. I also value the feedback from golfers who compliment me and my staff on the courses. Proper planning with my head mechanics ahead of weekly programs is another highlight, ensuring all machinery is ready for our maintenance days.

The worst: Managing the balance between golf course maintenance and the expectations of members can be challenging, especially when preparing the course ahead of golfers while minimising complaints about noise from blowers, brush cutters, and other equipment. Summer brings extra stress on the greens, and turf diseases can be difficult to manage, even when I stay up to date with treatment programs. On-the-spot decision-making is also a challenge, as a wrong decision can have significant consequences for the golf courses.

SAGT: What are the biggest challenges for yourself maintaining 2 x 18 Championship golf courses?

Mary: The biggest challenge is not being able to be on both courses at once. It would be great if I could be in two places at once. Running two separate 18-hole championship golf courses at the same time can be a bit chaotic, but with the support of the Golf Director at Mount Edgecombe Country Club and my assistant greenkeepers, we

SAGT: How big a difference does climate and location play in golf course maintenance?

Mary: Climate and location make a huge difference, especially here in KwaZulu Natal. The hot and humid months bring a lot of rain. When the courses are very wet, it is difficult to maintain them because we cannot use our machinery to cut the fairways and rough. This can put the maintenance schedule behind. Golfers also don’t enjoy playing when it is too wet.

During the dry winter months, we need to stay on top of irrigation to keep the grass and root systems healthy. We have two separate pump houses, one for each course. If the pumps fail for any reason, the heat could cause serious problems.

SAGT: What are the differences in grasses (fairway, rough, greens) at Mount Edgecombe Country Club to other parts of the country?

Mary: The Woods Greens: Paspalum and Bent grass.

The Lakes Greens: Royal Blue Cynodon and Bent grass.

Tees (both courses): Royal Blue Cynodon. Fairways (both courses): Royal Blue Cynodon.Rough (both courses): Bermuda grass.

SAGT: Does one need different machinery, on course, for different types of grass around the country?

Mary: Yes, the type of grass makes a difference and can vary in different parts of the country depending on the weather. For example, on closely mowed areas like greens, tees, and collars, we use cylinder mowers. On higher-cut areas, we use rotary mowers. Using the right machinery for each type of grass helps keep the areas on the golf course looking defined and well maintained.

SAGT: Do you think it should be mandatory for January | February 2026

Mary: Yes, definitely. Closing a golf course for one day a week allows us to maintain it properly without disrupting golfers and helps prevent injuries to staff from stray golf balls. At Mount Edgecombe Country Club, we close The Lakes on Mondays and The Woods on Tuesdays so we can cut, clean, and repair the courses for the upcoming week. Fortunately, with two golf courses, our members always have a course to play on, and there are always customers here even when one course is closed.

SAGT: People always complain about inconsistent bunkers, how difficult is it to maintain consistent bunkers and do you implement general checks and how?

Mary: It is extremely difficult to maintain perfect bunkers as the sand in the bunkers moves quite a bit. Rain, wind, or frequent use by golfers can cause the sand to shift a lot. We perform weekly checks on each and every bunker on both courses to make sure the sand levels are correct, and we monitor the bunkers after a heavy downpour to ensure the drainage is working.

SAGT: What’s the most surprising thing about your job that people wouldn’t expect?

Mary: The most surprising thing about my job is all the daily challenges and emergencies that people don’t see. For example, we sometimes need to hand-water or syringe greens while golfers are playing to keep them healthy. We also deal with sprinklers that don’t work properly, fallen trees, repairing divots, flooding, machinery breakdowns, and turf diseases that need attention straight away. Most people don’t realise that the beauty and smoothness of a course come from hours of detailed, often unseen work, all while making sure the golfers can keep playing without any problems.

SAGT: What advice would you give young women considering a career in turf management?

Mary: In life, there is nothing impossible. All you need is commitment, to be confident, continuous learning, and seeking help from others. There is a saying that says: “If you want to go fast, go alone, but if you want to go far, just go with others.”

SCHAPER’S MIRACLE SHOT EARNS HIM GLORY IN ALFRED DUNHILL CHAMPIONSHIP South Africa’s Jayden Schaper hit one of the best shots of his career to beat Shaun Norris with an eagle in their playoff and win the Alfred Dunhill Championship at Royal Johannesburg in December.

It was an incredible end to a day where Norris stunned the field with his 62 to set the clubhouse target at 16 under par, and Schaper then matched him on that total with a run of three birdies – including a chip-in on 16 – in his final five holes for a 67.

Playing the par-five 18th in the playoff, Schaper hit his drive into the right fairway bunker. Norris, in the middle of the fairway, hit his second to the heart of the green. Schaper responded with a rescue club out of the bunker that finished on the back edge of the green, and he holed that putt for eagle and the win.

Umkomaas golf course was first constructed, as a 9-hole layout, in 1913 but was expanded to 18 holes in 1926. In 1932 reknown course designer Robert "Bob" Grimsdell re-designed the course, capitalising on the natural contours of the land and taking advantage of the glorious sea views - in fact, most holes offer great views of the warm Indian ocean. The course layout has remained largely unchanged and as a result, one of Umkomaas' unique features are the raised greens, thanks to over 100 years of top-dressings and treatments.

Although not overly long, the course offers a great challenge for low handicappers, especially when the coastal winds blow. It is however forgiving for even an occasional golfer making it the perfect option for families and groups. Perhaps even more significant is that early in his professional career in 2020 Schaper had the chance to win the Alfred Dunhill Championship at Leopard Creek and lost out to the experience of Christiaan Bezuidenhout that day. It was a devastating blow for the young professional, and it made this victory even sweeter.

There was every bit the sense of a far more experienced and ferocious competitor at Royal Johannesburg’s East Course as he stared down Norris in the playoff. In fact, Schaper’s bunker shot was of such a high quality that it even drew applause from the other side of the fairway from Norris.

Interview with David Weyers, Highland Gate Golf & Trout Estate

SAGT - How long have you been in the golf industry, and what originally drew you to this career path?

David: I began my career in the residential estate industry in 2009 and transitioned into my first golf estate role in 2016 when I was appointed General Manager of Dainfern Golf Estate. That move marked the start of my journey in the golf industry and opened my eyes to the complexity and uniqueness of managing a golf estate environment.

SAGT - Was golf always your intended direction, or did you work in other industries before joining the golf sector?

David: Golf was certainly not my original career plan.

I only started playing the game in my thirties and was immediately drawn to the individual challenge it presents—it teaches you a great deal about yourself. Prior to this, I owned and operated my own businesses and entered the estate management space largely by chance. That said, I found the challenge incredibly rewarding and never looked back. Ironically, I had far more time to play golf before I started running a golf estate.

SAGT - In your view, what are the key elements required to run a successful and sustainable golf club today?

David: Adaptability is critical. The golf industry can be volatile, and it is essential to stay in tune with both the sport and the evolving expectations of members and visitors. I have been fortunate to work across a variety of industries, which has provided a strong foundation for managing the many moving parts of a golf and residential estate—from infrastructure, construction, and landscaping to HR, legal compliance, finance, and governance. A solid working knowledge across these disciplines, supported by strong teams, is essential for long-term sustainability.

SAGT - What does a typical workday look like for you at Highland Gate Golf & Trout Estate?

David: Most days begin early, often with the call of a fish eagle waking me around 4:30am. Without Johannesburg traffic to contend with, I usually arrive at the office in a good frame of mind. After scanning emails for anything urgent, the priority is connecting with the team. At Highland Gate, the weather plays a major role in daily planning, so maintenance and projects are adjusted accordingly.

Ongoing communication and coordination with the team are essential to managing the day effectively.

SAGT - Having previously managed estates such as Dainfern Valley, what are the biggest differences between managing a golf estate in

Gauteng versus a rural environment like Highland Gate?

David: The most significant difference is remoteness.

In urban environments, contractors and suppliers are close at hand, making emergencies easier to resolve. In a rural setting like Highland Gate, planning and preventative maintenance must be exceptionally precise. We manage our own water, sewerage, electrical infrastructure, and waste systems, which requires a high level of preparedness. Operations, including the clubhouse, must be well stocked and well planned—you cannot simply run to the nearest store if something is overlooked.

SAGT - Does Highland Gate’s natural setting and unpredictable weather influence how you manage operations and the golfing experience?

David: Absolutely. The weather is often the first topic of conversation here, much like in London.

SAGT - Slow play remains a challenge across the industry. How are you actively managing pace of play at Highland Gate?

David: Pace of play has been a key focus area for us.

Over recent months, the team and I have implemented several changes, including wider tee-time intervals during peak periods, the introduction of spotters at key points on the course, and strategic rate adjustments earlier in the week to accommodate larger groups and corporate events.

While these measures have financial implications— such as limiting rounds and increasing staffing—we firmly believe that investing in the quality of the golfing experience is essential for long-term success.

SAGT - Your role requires availability outside traditional working hours. How do you manage these demands, and how does this affect your personal life?

David: My family remains based in Johannesburg due to their commitments, which allows me to be highly focused on the estate. Living on-site enables January | February 2026

close involvement in all aspects of operations, although it is not something I would recommend indefinitely without balance. Fortunately, the beauty of the environment often makes the role feel less like work. I am grateful for a highly supportive team and directors who trust me to lead with autonomy, which makes a significant difference.

SAGT - What are your short- and long-term goals for Highland Gate?

David: In the short term, my focus has been on first impressions—improving aesthetics, infrastructure, and attention to detail across the estate. This has led to numerous maintenance and upgrade projects, supported by a committed and motivated team.

Significant capital investment has allowed for major course improvements, including the bunker project and new equipment, which have had a noticeable impact.

Long term, our vision is to continue developing Highland Gate as a destination that offers something for every member of the family, while remaining attractive to investors and international visitors. Expanding lifestyle offerings, particularly for younger family members, is a priority, and the potential development of a spa is certainly on the horizon.

SAGT - When you do get time to yourself, what do you enjoy doing?

David: Simply being immersed in this environment is one of the greatest rewards. I enjoy walking along the river, photographing the landscape, spotting rare bird species, and appreciating the smaller details of nature. The estate provides endless inspiration and content, which we often share through our newsletters and publications.

SAGT - Do you still manage to get out and enjoy a round of golf yourself?

David: I do make a point of getting out onto the course at least once or twice a week, often enjoying a quiet nine holes on a Sunday afternoon. From experience, it is easy to become consumed by operations and forget to enjoy the results of the work. My advice to managers in similar roles is simple: make the time. It matters.

• She is one of Canada’s true legends of the game.

• Born in Oakville, Ontario on 4 June 1948, this Canadian professional golfer showed extraordinary talent from a very young age. By just 13, she was already competing in Ontario provincial events, beginning a junior and amateur career that was nothing short of remarkable. Along the way, she claimed the Ontario Junior Girls Championship and the Canadian Junior Girls Championship three times each.

• Her transition to the professional ranks was seamless. In 1968, she was named LPGA Rookie of the Year, and that same year she rewrote history by winning the LPGA Championship at just 20 years and 11 days old, becoming the youngest player ever to win an LPGA major at the time. That record stood for nearly four decades, only being broken in 2007 by Morgan Pressel.

• Her accolades continued to accumulate. In 1978 and 1979, she captured the Colgate-Dinah Shore Winner’s Circle in consecutive years, becoming the first player to win one of the LPGA Tour’s premier events back-to-back. In recognition of her impact both on and off the course, she was named Canada’s Female Athlete of the Year in 1979 and was later inducted into both the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame and the Royal Canadian Golf Association Hall of Fame.

• After stepping away from full-time tour golf, she successfully reinvented herself as one of the sport’s leading instructors. She founded a highly respected School of Golf, now operating in multiple locations across Canada. Her influence extended further through a signature line of golf clubs with Canadian company Jazz Golf, as well as a book and several instructional golf videos.

• A true pioneer whose legacy continues to shape the game.
