WINNING LETTER Dear Editor I feel that there is a danger of golf becoming an enduring sport of power and top physical fitness, which could possibly alienate audiences. A reality not afforded to most other sports and one that should be celebrated is that the average club golfer could tee it up with the world number one and still enjoy a competitive game together. A unique relationship exists in golf between professional and amateurs and this relationship is often incorporated into successful tour events such as the Alfred Dunhill Links Pro-Am. This cannot be said for most other mainstream sports. The Ryder Cup once again proved itself to be immensely entertaining and one has to ask why this is so. I would say that it is the emergence of individual characters such as Jamie Donaldson who gave a disheveled interview after a celebratory night out on the town.

sacked for calling Ian Poulter a ‘little girl’
Ted Bishop has been removed from his post as the president of the PGA of America for “insensitive gender-based statements” about Ian Poulter on social media, the golf governing body has announced.

ishop called Poulter a “Lil Girl” in a series of outbursts on his personal Twitter and Facebook pages on Thursday in posts that have since been deleted. Bishop, the 38th PGA president, was reacting to the English Ryder Cup player making critical remarks in his recently released autobiography about the methods of Tom Watson and Nick Faldo as captains in the Europe v USA tournament. Bishop first wrote on Twitter: “@IanJamesPoulter – Faldo’s record stands by itself. Six majors and all-time RC points. Yours vs. His? Lil Girl. @NickFaldo006 @pgaofamerica.” Bishop then expanded his point on Facebook, saying: “Used to be athletes who had lesser records or accomplishments in a sport never criticized the icons. Tom Watson (8 majors and a 10-3-1 Ryder Cup record) and Nick Faldo (6 majors and all-time Ryder Cup points leader) get bashed by Ian James Poulter. Really? Sounds like a little school girl squealing during recess. C’MON MAN!”

Poulter, himself yet to triumph in a major, was taken aback by the remark. “Is being called a ‘lil girl’ meant to be derogatory or a put down?” Poulter said to Golf Channel. “That’s pretty shocking and disappointing, especially coming from the leader of the PGA of America. No further comment.” The vice-president, Derek Sprague, has been appointed the interim president until 22 November, when there will be an election.

Confirming the windfall for a local tournament, Nedbank Golf Challenge Tournament Director Alastair Roper said the change in one of the criteria for eligibility for ‘Africa’s Major’ was brought about by the change of date for the South African Open Championship announced earlier in the day. “One way into the tournament in its new 30-man format last

KNOW YOUR RULES LIFTING BALL FOR IDENTIFICATION
If a player believes that a ball at rest might be his, but he cannot identify it, the player may lift the ball for identification, without penalty. The right to lift a ball for identification is in addition to the actions permitted under Rule 12-1. Before lifting the ball, the player must announce his intention to his opponent in match play or his marker or a fellow-competitor in stroke play and mark the position of the ball. He may then lift the ball and identify it, provided that he gives his opponent, marker or fellow-competitor an opportunity to observe the lifting and replacement. The ball must not be cleaned beyond the extent necessary for identification when lifted under Rule 12-2. If the ball is the playeršs ball and he fails to comply with any part of this procedure, he incurs a penalty of one stroke.

Pitching basics 101 by Paul Cuningham, PGA Qualified Teaching Professional at Eagle Canyon
T
he Pro that can pitch, doesn’t need to putt! The stats speak for themselves in that the closer you pitch it the easier it is to convert it. In this modern age of the game, relatively speaking of course ;-) Top players convert on average 9 out of 10 one meter putts, 6 out of 10 from two meters and 3 out of 10 from just inside four meters. If you get it closer than most, you’ll always be in the game - you may even own it! Primarily, the set-up is everything to all things and swings. As your first point of connection to the club, a weak grip position as seen here in frame 2, set more into the fingers of your left hand will allow for more hinge in your wrists and make it easier for the club head to return back underneath your hands through impact. This will help add to the flight, spin and consistency of your pitches. Unless you are opening the club face up to a maximum of 45 degrees (know as the cut-pitch or lob), then there is no need to open up your stance way left of your target. This just complicates swing paths and strike points.

Where we can we want to return the club squarely with the full face of the grooves presented at impact, the true loft returned for best flight and bounce characteristics striking the turf directly under your ball. To achieve pinpoint accuracy, square up your stance and create mini golf swings of different lengths for distance control, down your target line. The centre point of your swing is your “BOP”, your “bottomout-point”. Make sure you fit the bounce of your sole to the strike point underneath the golf ball. Take note of the impact point in your practice swings and then fit it to your strike. The narrower we stand the more top heavy it makes us and because of the sense of instability we get with this it heightens our internal senses towards making us more stable during the motion. That’s why so many Teaching Pro’s love throwing at us the feet-together-drill ;-) For pitches inside the 50 meter zone keep your shoes just inside your shoulder-line, imagine you have a soccer ball between your shoes. Pitches or distance wedges over 50 meters, let your feet stabilize and fit your frame, shoulder width apart.

A. Good posture in any of the art forms in golf is crucial to the consistency of your strike and distance control. Setting your spine angle correctly will enable you to rotate more efficiently and help keep your swing more on plane. This will allow your club head to bottom out more consistently underneath the ball. Push your bum out and upward slightly, hollowing out your lower back and then raise your chin slightly with an air of arrogance looking down your nose at the ball. This will get all the disks in your spine seated comfortably and aggravate it less during the rotation of your movement. Never over flex your knees, once again this overloads the muscle groups in your legs or lower back and could put strain on your natural mobility and a corrective impulse could occur causing you to miss strike shots. Let your knee flex just support your tilt over the ball, no strain, no pain but much to gain ;-) Finally before you attempt to swing, make sure you are loaded onto the balls of your feet. This is your position of ultimate mobility, stability and your bodies point of dynamic balance. Ready? Green light on? Let’s Go! B. Now that we have a good set-up it’s time to get the pitch in motion. We want to keep the move as simple and effective as possible. Its important that we are not too “handsy” with this shot, the job of the hands are to keep connection to the club and maintain a sense of feel to where the club head is throughout the swing - so keep them soft! Next we want as little moving parts as possible in your action and more of a bigger muscle, arms/body motion that allows the club head to have controlled acceleration through the strike. C. Some of my favorite drills for gaining synchronization to your pitches is the towel drill under both arms and weighted ball swings. The towel connects your arms to your body and gets your arms working in unison with your body. The ball helps keep us connected and the arm/body motion constant. Its also harder to lift the ball in the backswing, so assists us more in a one piece take-away and shorter backswing options. It’s also harder to throw a heavy ball in this manner and as you get a little tired the hands start working less and the bigger muscles take over more - this is the feeling you want in practice! When you release the ball towards your target (the person playing catch) make sure you commit it towards them - let it GO; extend it down your target-line.

D. Always finish your swings in your pitches or make sure your follow-throughs are longer than your backswings. Through hip height both back and through, always make sure the butt of your club is always pointing at your belly button. we’re looking for width in the pitch action, shallow or sweeping strikes through impact and a fancy “Y” with the forearms/club shaft through impact. When you train your pitching, not only do you want consistency in your flight and strike but you also want a nice compact scatter pattern of balls in your nominated scoring circle surrounding the target. Anything around 2 meters and in is great from around the 15 meter zone up to 50 meters and from there up to 100 meters, inside of 3 meters would great.

Central Gauteng lifts 54th at SA IPT
Central Gauteng’s youthful exuberance, grit and determination was unparalleled for five days as they marched to an unbeaten victory in the 54th South African Inter-Provincial held at Westlake GC in September.

“This is an incredible moment for the whole team,” said captain Louis Taylor as the team shared a round of high fives at the 18th green after the last putt dropped.
The six bankers and two rookies dovetailed to perfection against Western Province, Southern Cape, Ekurhuleni and defending champions, Gauteng North and defeated Boland 7.5 – 4.5 in the final scuffle to lift the title for a record 26th time.
“In my first SA IPT we came up just short and last year we had to fight like demons to survive relegation,” Taylor said. “I think only the past winners of this tournament can understand the incredible pride we share as a team right now. This was a team effort all the way and everyone deserves to take credit.
hile this year’s tournament delivered the usual mix of upsets and jostling for position, it proved once again that even when teams look strong on paper, golf is still played on grass.

he 15-year-old Ruimsig golfer took a commanding five stroke lead in the Gus Ackerman Division with an opening 73 and protected her advantage with a second round 76. The Gauteng golfer weathered a slight stumble towards the end of the final round and rallied with a closing birdie after a double bogey at the 15th and bogey at the 17th for a 71 to win by five strokes from Amy Henning on four-over-par 220.

ising Limpopo star Hennie du Plessis was full of smiles when he landed back on South African soil after a fruitful debut in the MCB Indian Ocean Amateur Golf Open in Mauritius last month. Du Plessis upstaged fellow South Africans Jason Smith and NJ Arnoldi at the Tamarina GC to claim a four stroke victory in the second edition of the prestigious international event on Sunday. The 17-year-old Sesambos golfer lagged four off the pace after an opening 75, but carded a second 71 to catch up to reigning SA Amateur Stroke Play champion, Smith.

“I would love to make this a habit,” joked Du Plessis, who also lifted the Zambia Amateur Open title a little over a year ago. “I’m absolutely thrilled with this victory,” said Du Plessis after finishing on two under 214. “Going up against top amateurs like Jason, NJ and Ludovic was pretty challenging. The field wasn’t massive, but it was stacked with top ranked players from Mauritius, Reunion Island and Madagascar and the two top ranked amateurs from India. “It was a great experience for me to go up against them and come out winning.” The Pretoria amateur began the final round in a tie for the lead with fellow Gauteng North golfer, Chris Delport, on six under and a two stroke advantage over evergreen Jock Wellington, a three-time winner of the prestigious senior championship. Hendrikse produced a clinical, comprehensive two-underpar 70 to triumph on eight under 136, finishing a magnificent five strokes clear of Delport and Wellington, who carded respective rounds of 73 and 75. “At our age, you grow old fast in a year that it is really an incredible privilege for anyone to win this championship twice, let alone three times like Jock did,” said the delighted champion. “I am so thrilled to put my name on the trophy and, if I am even halfway as competitive as I am now, I’ll definitely have another go next year.”

Province number one Gorlei boxed a crucial pressure putt to halve her game against Woo Ju Son and force 4.5 all draw against Gauteng B to hand the local favourites their first victory in the prestigious team championship since 1999. Double Ekurhuleni joy at A Boys U-13 Champs
Ekurhuleni junior Liam van Deventer delighted in a double celebration after the young gun scored a play-off victory in the prestigious Nomads SA Boys U-13 Championship and helped his team to win the Team Competition at Wingate Park CC last month.

he leaders finished the first extra hole in par, but during the third trip down the 18th, Van Deventer turned the tide in his favour. He timed his second shot perfectly and finished 20 meters before the green, while Duminy overshot the pin. The Ekurhuleni junior chipped to six feet and drained the birdie putt for victory. Meanwhile Yurav Premlall carded a 79, Zamokuhle Nxasana returned 82, Casey Jarvis registered an 82 and Jaryd Venter contributed an 84 to win the Team Competition. The runner’s up last year, Ekurhuleni scored 392 in the first two rounds and combined for a 399 in the final round to defeat Central Gauteng by two shots.

Monks Cowl is Par for the Course The Drakensberg is one of the country’s most beautiful golfing destinations and certainly ideal for the city slicker who needs a truly peaceful spot to unwind with a good game of golf.

he mild summer climate coupled with the spectacular backdrop of the Drakensberg make many of the golf courses in the region an attractive option – none more so than the recently upgraded Monks Cowl course. Regarded as one of the Drakensberg’s top 10 courses, Gooderson Leisure’s Monks Cowl Golf Resort’s 9 hole, 18 tee golf course is certainly one of the most scenic with views of the magnificent Champagne Valley – including Monks Cowl itself, which is between the towering Champagne Castle and Cathkin Mountains and took on its name because it resembles a cleric’s attire - from every tee.

It serves as the perfect introduction to the 260,000 hectare Ukhahlamba Drakensberg Park World Heritage site and the Mdedelo wilderness area. The course itself has a couple of dams and a river. It is generally level. The fifth hole is accessed via a swing bridge which crosses the gorge at Hattingspruit. The fairways are planted with Kikuyu, and the greens with Cynodon dactylon. For those golfers still at “caddy” status or wanting some good exercise in the crisp mountain air, there’s a pleasant walk around the course. Alternatively motorised golf cars are available.

alf of the victorious European Ryder Cup team as well as two Major winners and three former world number ones are amongst the first group of players to confirm their place in this December’s Nedbank Golf Challenge.
Tournament Director Alastair Roper, in announcing the first 12 players that will tee it up in the 4-7 December tournament co-sanctioned by the European Tour and Sunshine Tour and played at one of Sun International’s flagship golf courses in the Gary Player CC, said he was delighted with the response of Europe’s Ryder Cup stars. The European Ryder Cup stars in the Nedbank Golf Challenge field include Thomas Bjørn, Martin Kaymer, Victor Dubuisson, Jamie Donaldson, Stephen Gallacher and Lee Westwood. Spain’s Miguel Angel Jiminez, who was a vice-captain on the team, is also in the field. Charl Schwartzel, the 2011 Masters champion, leads the South Africans in the group, which includes 2013 Sunshine Tour Order of Merit winner Dawie van der Walt. LTA in collaboration with PelePele Travel and Marketing held the 2nd Annual Limpopo Tourism Golf Extravaganza at Legend Golf & Safari Resort on 10 September 2014.

The inaugural Limpopo Tourism Golf Extravaganza last year, was part of the 2013 September Tourism Month celebrations. This was officially launched at the Golf Tourism Seminar hosted by the National Department of Tourism (NDT), Limpopo Economic Development Environment and Tourism (LEDET), PelePele Travel and Marketing and LTA on the 22nd July 2013.

Growing on last year, this year’s tournament included twenty two (22) PGA golf professionals and seventy (74) amateur golfers from various provinces and media. In attendance at this year’s event was the MEC for LEDET, Mr. Seaparo Sekoati, PGA Chief Executive, Mr. Ivano Ficalbi and LTA Board Chairperson, Mr. Mashilo Matsetela. Professionals battled it out for the R50 000 cash prize purse. Winners were announced in the evening of the 12th September 2014. The Pro Prize purse of R50 000 was broken down from 1st – 15th place for the Pros. Pieter Kruger was the

Golf’s 2020 Vision Golf has become a global game, with new markets developing in Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe. In researching and writing Golf ’s 2020 Vision: The HSBC Report, it has been striking that a game that is often regarded as traditional and conservative has embraced change so readily. In doing so, it is laying the foundations for the development of the game well into the 21st century, aligning itself with the trends which will shape life on the planet in the coming decades. By 2020 and beyond, we see a sport that will be in the process of transforming itself.
It will be more international. Historically, golf has been associated with countries in the richer world, in particular the US and the UK. As courses develop it will increasingly become more international, with more world-class competition golf being played in more countries. It is only a matter of time before the European Tour spends more time competing in the Gulf, adding a second ‘Desert Swing’ to the itinerary, and there are more top flight events added to the schedule in China and elsewhere in Asia. This is to be welcomed; in turn it will 58
encourage the emergence of more homegrown professionals from these countries, creating a virtuous circle of greater coverage, enabling youngsters to identify with local success, and encouraging local sponsors and brands to move into the market, creating more funding and more opportunities for development. The women’s professional game is already some way down this road. The professional men’s game of 2020 will also be more diverse.

Participation will be broader. As golf is identified as a more active game requiring greater levels of fitness, so more young people are attracted to it rather than to other sports. In China this is reinforced by perceptions that golf teaches children important personal values. At the same time, women’s engagement with the game, and participation in it, is also increasing—a source of growth even in those markets where the sport has seen a decline since the financial crisis. The result will be a game that is both younger and less male. The development of golf ‘destinations’ such as the planned Indoor Golf Arena will also encourage participation by attracting players of a wide range of ability and experience. Golf clubs and golf courses will need to respond, and we expect that by 2020 most clubs will be more family-friendly, in the clubhouse, in the practice areas, and on the fairways. This is good business as well as being socially appropriate.
The game will be more flexible. Golf is increasingly moving away from the expectation that a game involves a full round of 18 holes, to a model where shorter versions of the game are encouraged. Extending participation in a more urban world will need shorter courses closer to where people live and work. We expect to see this extended by a range of new competitive formats
which enable professionals to play against each other in events which take only a few hours rather than the four days of a full strokeplay event. Power Play can be thought of as the first steps in this direction, and we anticipate that broadcasters will be active in developing such formats to help to promote their investment in the game. The rapid evolution in the quality of golf simulators will help, as they become sophisticated enough to replicate the full range of game situations, and enable people to ‘keep their eye in’ by playing indoors for an hour or two.
Golf will be more accessible. The public perception of golf is still, to some extent, influenced by the attitudes of a small number of exclusive clubs. The development of short courses, of versions of the game that can be played in urban spaces, and of technology-enabled play will open the game up to people who are as interested in the sport of golf as its reputation. There are still challenges here for the game: there will need to be more locations where the business model is based on pay-and-play or the multicourse carnet rather than the membership model. Many of the youngsters taking up the game in China and India are from families without experience of golf, helped by the growth in academies and discounted green rates. continued on p62

It will be more technologically engaged. We are moving quickly towards a world in which digital technology is ubiquitous, even in emerging markets, and these technologies are rapidly becoming mobile, local and social. Courses and clubs are already using social media for marketing, communications, and bookings, and payment will not be far behind. Beyond the mobile device, sensors are now so cheap that it is possible to embed them in objects just in case, rather than having to build a business case. There will be some trivial but useful benefits from this, such as the end of the lost ball, automatic scoring, and a host of richer applications and benefits. These could include learning and coaching applications, such as the ‘smart club’ which can remember your grip and swing for a bad (or good) shot, allowing you to analyse it later. The use of video as a coaching aid will be increasingly widespread. Sensors will also be valuable to groundsmen and women in improving the maintenance and management of courses, enabling, for example, precision application of water or nutrients only where needed.
Courses will be more sustainable. Golf has to some extent been behind the curve on sustainability, with some

regarding it as a compliance cost rather than as an opportunity for the sport to develop expertise while also reducing costs. Water consumption will have to be reduced for courses in many parts of the world, and there is likely to be growing concern over the impact of fertiliser on runoff and local water systems. But all of these also represent huge opportunities for golf. The land management expertise of golf groundspeople is already high, and they have the potential to become repositories of knowledge about good local environmental practice. Courses will find that sustainable management is a cost-saving, not a cost. The future golf course will be embedded in the local water systems of their communities, helping them to manage their water resources, sharing good practice, and supporting local biodiversity through the design and management of courses.
Some of these issues will represent a challenge. The game is likely to see quite rapid change over the next decade. But they are changes that will help the game of golf—one of the oldest sports in the world—to grow and to prosper in the 21st century.

ews from Koro Creek Bushveld Golf Estate is that the journey to a new greener golf course is progressing well. As can be seen from the advertisement above the new logo has been completed and the connection between logo and estate solidified with the addition of the wording. The past month has seen a lot of innovation coming out of Koro Creek Bushveld Golf Estate, new golfers experience is in full swing and feedback from visitors is very positive. A new concept for the restaurant finalized so expect to see great new dishes on the menu soon. As for the golf course, tons of fertilizer has been applied to the entire course, a soil correction

done to improve the overall balance of the soil and the greens are on a program to improve even more on the already excellent surface. In addition over twenty trees have been planted on the new 18th fairway which is nearing completion with only the two fairway bunkers needing to be finalized.
A very successful IGT event was recently held at Koro Creek Bushveld Golf Estate and the feedback from the players was overwhelmingly positive. LEE-ANNE GOES FIRST . . . South Africa’s Lee-Anne Pace followed Sally Little into the winner’s circle on the LPGA Tour. The legendary Major winner won 15 times on the LPGA Tour between 1976 and 1988 and Pace ended a 26-year South African title drought with a 3 stroke victory in the Blue Bay LPGA last month. Coming off a sublime victory at the Cell C SA Women’s Open, the Pearl Valley golfer arrived in China a day after her SA Open victory and carried her hot form straight into the Blue Bay LPGA Championship.

ee-Anne has been building her season around the week of the Cell C SA Women’s Open, and it paid off when she beat England’s Holly Clyburn in a playoff to win the title at San Lameer CC. Pace closed with a strong back nine including an eagle and birdies at two of her final three holes to finish with a 67 and tied for the lead with Clyburn on five under par. Then she birdied the par-four 18th, the second hole of a sudden-death playoff, to claim her ninth victory on the Ladies European Tour, but by far her most special.
Then she lipped out for a birdie on 17, but closed with a birdie on 18 to force the playoff. Both golfers parred the 18th the first time around. And then as Clyburn hit a poor approach, Pace put hers three feet from the hole for a birdie to take the title. “I was just trying to have fun in the playoff. Four strokes ahead with five holes left when play was suspended on the Sunday because of darkness, Pace finished off a 5-under 67 for a three-stroke victory over Germany’s Caroline Masson. The victory was her third in China, following the LET’s Sanya Ladies Open in 2010 and 2013. “I can’t actually believe it,” Pace said. “I’m still so in the moment of one shot at a time that I think it’s going to hit me. It’s like, literally, now I can relax. It’s amazing. Obviously, one of my life goals, not only on the golf course, but to do something like that very special.” Pace made a 6-foot birdie putt on the par-5 18th to finish at 16-under 200 at Jian Lake Blue Bay. “I look back at last week and how I actually played better toward the end,” Pace said. “So, I thought, ‘Just do the same thing.’ I hit some really nice iron shots coming in on the last few holes. To close out with a birdie is obviously a bonus. I saw Caroline making a move.” Masson birdied the final three holes for a 67. “I’m happy with that finish and that was all I could do,” Masson said. “Obviously, I wanted to play. I was in a good position and wanted to play. I knew we were going to play and we probably were going to play in any condition. ... I fought hard.” Michelle Wie and Jessica Korda tied for third at 11 under. Korda, tied for the second-round lead with Pace, closed with a 72. Rain delayed play for nearly four hours on the Sunday with the leaders halfway through the round, leading to the Monday finish in the tournament cut from 72 to 54 holes after play was washed out Friday. The start Monday also was delayed by showers. “I woke up and heard the weather outside,” Pace said. “So, I had a fairly good idea it was going to be delayed. I took my time, got coffee, went for a lengthy breakfast. I had a lot of coffee. Felt tired this morning, but all in all, felt pretty confident. I knew I was hitting well. I knew I could do it down the stretch. I’ve done it before.”

Turning back the clock is the Golfer from the past?
WHO
• Our mystery golfer was born in Brunswick, Australia on the 23rd August 1929. • He was a prolific tournament champion around the world, winning the national championships of ten countries, including the New Zealand Open nine times. • He won five British Opens between 1954 and 1965. • He enjoyed a successful senior career. In 1985 he won nine times on the Senior PGA Tour in the United States, and finished top of the money list. His last tournament victory came at the 1988 British PGA Seniors Championship. • He was president of the Australian PGA from 1962 to 1994 and a victorious non-playing captain of the international team in the 1998 Presidents Cup. • He was a guest at the presentation ceremony of the 135th Open Championship, which was won by Tiger Woods. The event marked the 50th anniversary of his third Open victory. • He has designed over a hundred golf courses in Australia and around the world.

Two will always be better than one! Hello and welcome to this final edition of SA golf trader for 2014. In this article I would like to talk about the importance of a solid support structure in our golfing industry. With this I mean finding the people within the golfing industry, whether it is on the course maintenance side or within club operations, but find people that you can relate to and share information with.

ou will be surprised how much you learn from other people in the same industry, and how much they learn from you, all because no two golf courses are the same! And this calls for different approaches to ensure that your specific club thrives. One example of a simple, but extremely

effective tool of communication is “Whatts app”. I am part of two separate groups within our course structure that communicates about projects and machinery on a day to day basis, this ensures that every person involved knows what is going on immediately without a meeting. Special meetings will be held for big projects, but “whatts app” will stay our first line of communication.

The latest group that I have started comprises of Golf Course Superintendents that can ask questions about grass diseases, course management, and many more issues that we have to deal with on a daily basis. We have Superintendents from as far as New Zealand sharing their information and learning from us as well. We discuss matters such as weather conditions, and the diseases that may follow after such weather, also the effectiveness of the products used for these diseases. Recently I posted some of our old machinery on this group and almost sold it all within a day. This would not have been possible if I didn’t surround myself with people that I know I can trust and ask any questions too. Once a month we have a Club managers/Course Superintendents meeting at a different golf course. I have been part of the Southern Cape association for over 10 years now, and not a meeting goes by that I don’t learn something. I call these people my friends and it feels like family, this is my support structure that I value very highly and this is what makes our course and other courses successful.

Connie Chen Connie Chen has secured her first win on the Ladies European Tour with her win in October of the Open de Espana, in Tenerife on a total of -12 and earning a first prize cheque of Eur 52,500.00 (+-R682,000) This put her on 24th place on the Order of Merit with a total of Eur 73,123.00.

Lee Anne Pace Lee Ann Pace has gone from strength to strength this year having won the South African Ladies Open at San Lameer, (her first title on home soil in over 5 years and her first SA Open title) in a spectacular play off which lasted 2 holes. Recently she has had her first LPGA win (following on from the SA Open) with the Blue Bay Classic in Sanya China. This event sees her winning a total purse of $300,000 and securing her 2 year playing exemption on the LPGA. Well done Lee Ann! Lee Ann is also currently 5th on the LET Order of Merit with a total of Eur 159,893 and 70 CME Rankings (LPGA) and 29 in the Rolex World Rankings.

German aircraft from Norway would fly on missions to northern England Because of the icy weather conditions, the barrels of their guns had a small dab of wax to protect them. As they crossed the coast, they would clear their guns by firing a few rounds at the golf courses. Golfers were urged to take cover.
