Growth story of the NRC

In India, 1 out of every 2 children under the age of 5 is affected by malnutrition. If these children do not get the required treatment early enough, the damage caused is long-term. Their ability to cope in school is affected and their chances of growth are reduced, thereby continuing the cycle of poverty.

Scaling up our efforts to fight the ravages of malnutrition, we are in the process of extending our support to Nutrition Rehabilitation Centres in Jharkhand and Rajasthan where the rate of malnutrition is considerably high. These NRCs provide immediate nutritional and medical treatment with proper care and affection.

This is the Nutrition Rehabilitation Centre in Tonk, Rajasthan. The NRC also referred to as the Malnutrition Treatment Centre has been operational in the city since April 2006.

However, it fell short of trained healthcare professionals and necessary infrastructural aids like cooking equipment, clean water, counselling kits, etc. These lapses proved an obstacle for children wanting to seek proper treatment and for mothers who wanted to admit their children at the centre.

Save the Children has supported the NRC by providing skilled doctors and trained health workers, and other basic amenities like counselling kits for mothers and nurses, equipment for growth monitoring, colorful curtains, stuff toys, black board for daily attendance, benches for the waiting area, blankets for children and their mothers, kitchen cabinet for stocking food items, LCD, and set top box connection for telecasting informative material on health and nutrition and as well as cartoons for the children.

This is a model NRC and there is a long way to go before the centre becomes fully functional to provide optimum care to the children in the entire district. We want to replicate NRCs at a national level so that with consistent efforts malnutrition can be rooted out of our country.
