Summer Intensive 2018 Welcome to the 2018 L.A. Conservatory Summer Intensive!

We are hoping there is something for everyone: improv, standup comedy, a chance to work on accents, a motion capture Q&A,a free-your-voice workshop, self-taping workshop and a panel with some of Los Angeles’ most esteemed television broadcasters.

We are grateful to have four workshops by SAG-AFTRA staff, who will answer questions regarding the theatrical, commercial and new media contracts, as well as questions about residuals.

Our theme this year for the Summer Intensive is “Be The Room Where It Happens: Create Your Career”. We chose this theme because we are now living in an era in which the number of delivery platforms exceed the amount of excellent content — which is great for you as a performer! You now have virtually unlimited opportunities to inexpensively create, post and share your work. Artists are able to get together with friends and associates and make a web series that becomes a network or cable television series. How and why? Because everyone in show biz is looking for “the next big thing.” A remarkable Twitter feed has led to an actor writing a film. A young actress doing a series of “rants” on YouTube became the star of a hit cable show.

Remember, your input is invaluable. Our goal is to offer you workshops and panels that are not a part of our regular curriculum. We also want to bring back favorite teachers as well as introduce new instructors. So PLEASE fill out the evaluation cards provided at the end of each session.

Which teachers are invited back, which new classes should be added to the roster and any suggestions as to how to make the Summer Intensive better next year are greatly informed by what you tell us. Taking a weekend to dive into exploring the possibilities available to you as an artist is a gift you give yourselves. We hope that this weekend of inspiration and exploration will renew your commitment to your career and provide you with ideas and methods to get from here to “there” — wherever “there” might be for you.

The Summer Intensive provides workshops and panels with fellow artists who can help guide you towards realizing your own creative potential, from the inner landscape to the outer one. You will have the opportunity to work with teachers who can help you focus, get rid of creative blocks and then find your niche, your voice and your essence.

Instructors will work with you on basic auditioning and acting and experts will offer advice in the area of marketing and social media. We have a number of voiceover classes from commercials to looping to video games. There are also commercial and theatrical casting directors, both teaching classes and sitting on panels answering your questions.

By Lee Garlington Like thousands (millions?) of others, count me among those blown away by Hamilton. The musical is more than a play. It is an experience. I wept when the play ended and I still think about it. I was touched, moved, impressed and completely inspired.

There’s a powerful song called The Room Where It Happens. Hamilton wants to be in that room. I posit that today, as artists, we can be the room where it happens. We have a magnificent role model for that in Lin Manuel Miranda.

Our theme for this year’s Summer Intensive is “Be The Room Where It Happens - Create Your Career."

Miranda read a book that moved him. He then took a biography of a seminal figure, an integral part of early American history , at least white peoples’ history, and had an idea, a vision. His take on that chunk of history became music and movement and he told us a story that was mesmerizing. Would Hamilton be the phenomenon it is if there were a bunch of historically accurate white people up on that stage singing and dancing? I don’t think so. Why? I’m not sure, but hazarding a guess, I would say seeing these characters performed by actors of color makes us experience the story with fresh eyes. Those historical figures become more relatable, more here and now, more interesting in the “what if” realm of the imagination.

This panel is chock full of performers who have manifested careers that are diverse and creative.

I know the word “genius” is bandied about like candy canes at Christmas, but there’s no doubt in my mind that Lin Manuel Miranda is one. However, if we break that word genius down, I think there are aspects of genius we each possess, pieces we can water and grow.



INSPIRATION. What inspires you? If we’re going to be the room where it happens, that probably means the room didn’t exist before we became the room. It’s thinking outside of the box, not coloring within the lines. I don’t think Miranda worries about the exact shape and structure of a musical. He gets inspired and creates something new, something we haven’t seen before. What is that in you? If there were no limitations — no worries about money, practicality, time or resources — what story or idea excites and inspires you? What do you fantasize about? What vision can you imagine that’s not yet in the world?

CREATIVITY AND CONFIDENCE. I’ve never had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Miranda, but I’m guessing he doesn’t put any limitations on his imagination. He probably doesn’t worry whether his ideas fit in a formulaic structure, if they’re salable, if other people will judge him. I bet he has fun and feels free to manifest whatever he’s imagined. I’m betting his creative streak runs deep, fast and wide. And, with the success he’s had, he’s probably fairly confident that his creativity will be welcomed and rewarded. If you had the time, money or energy necessary, what would you like to create? Maybe start small, something for friends and family. See if it works. Then grow it.

MESSAGE AND STORY. Do you ever see a movie or play, or read an article or book, and think, “That’s not my experience, never happened that way for me.” So what’s your story? Tell the story you want to see, share and experience. Maybe you need someone else to write it, but that doesn’t mean you can’t be a creator. We are creative people in an era where there are many platforms and abundant opportunities to perform and communicate, to be and tell the story that is within us. What do you want to say? What’s

your message to the world? What niche do you fill that no one else can?

I recently went to the wedding of my friends Michael and Andre, and it was as much fun as I’ve ever had. Why? They completely thought outside of the box. After dinner, the room where they took their vows was filled with a bouncy castle so large it would not fit in my backyard. They came up with something that adults don’t often get to do – especially in gowns and tuxedos – which is jump up and down, fall, roll around and laugh with joy. They created a magical, thoughtful, totally fun experience for all of their guests.

Give your imagination carte blanche. Think about the story you want to tell, the part you want to play, the series you’d like to be a part of. Remove limitations, get inspired and allow creativity to blossom. Who knows where it will lead? You can’t possibly know until you give yourself permission to be the room where it happens.

Bring an audition, a monologue, your headshot, demo and/or marketing questions. The more specific you are, the more you can get out of your time.

Remember: If you are signed up for a private session with an instructor who teaches standup comedy, don’t bring in a dramatic monologue! Know your chosen teacher’s area of expertise.

This is not a substitution for the instructor’s scheduled workshop, but you don’t have to go to their class in order to sign up for the diagnostic.

Beth Haynes Join the SAG-AFTRA Commercials Department for an educational seminar for members on the basic terms and conditions of the 2016 Commercials Contract and the 2016 Audio Commercials Contract. The first half of the presentation is based on the life of a commercial from the perspective of a principal performer — from audition to residuals. The second half is from the perspective of a background performer.

WHERE DO I PARK? Limited parking is available on the AFI campus as well as at the Immaculate Heart High School. Parking will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis. Please be kind to volunteers who will be available to assist with parking directions. If you arrive late, be prepared to hike up the hill to get to your classes. If you are directed to park off campus, please read street signs carefully. We will not be responsible for parking tickets. We recommend carpooling or taking alternate methods of transportation. FROM THE CHAIRS My fellow co-chair Jane Austin and I are excited to begin the new season of the L.A. SAG-AFTRA Conservatory.
