A message from our leaders

Across Sheltering Arms Institute, it was a remarkable year. In addition to providing exceptional rehabilitation services to individuals across Virginia and the MidAtlantic, we achieved several milestones that make us very optimistic about the future and the potential to help more people regain function and independence.

A successful corporate transition aligned inpatient and outpatient care, as well as support services, into one structure. This alignment enables a more comprehensive focus on improving access to the highest quality rehabilitation services available.

For example, more patients are benefiting from advanced therapeutic technology. We renovated and expanded services at our East End location and launched outpatient services at the hospital. These resources, made possible by generous donors, allow our teams to generate patient outcomes that were not possible a few years ago.

All of this is happening because an incredible community of healthcare professionals, generous donors, and community partners believe in new possibilities. And people are noticing.

We were named one of Virginia Living magazine’s Top Hospitals, accredited by DNV, and recognized with a renewal in the Traumatic Brain Injury Model System designation. Throughout this report, you will see many other examples of how this community’s courage and teamwork are reinventing rehabilitation.

We are grateful for everyone’s contributions and another outstanding year!

OUR MISSION: Deliver personalized care in an environment that supports recovery and restores possibility through the integration of collaborative science and research, interprofessional education, community engagement, and stewardship.

OUR VISION: Reinventing rehabilitation for life beyond limits

OUR VALUES:

COURAGE: Courage calls on us to create an environment that inspires confidence and a belief in what is possible.

INTEGRITY: We lead with integrity in all actions, hold ourselves to the highest possible standards, and work to strengthen our capacity to grow.

POSITIVITY: Positivity is the energy that allows us to support and care for others, to overcome obstacles, and to create a healthy environment for all.

COMMUNITY: Our belief in the power of relationships drives us to build lasting and meaningful connections.

DISCOVERY: We are relentless in our exploration of the art and science of rehabilitation, driven by our passion for care and for cures, to break down silos in the full spirit of our transdisciplinary care model.

ACCESSIBILITY: Our desire to be open to all compels us to minimize financial and other barriers within our environment of care.

LABURNUM CLINIC Expands

to Better Serve Our Community

In May 2022, construction began at our East Laburnum location to renovate and expand the clinic by more than 2,000 sq. ft. The end result is a brighter, more open, and modern space with state-of-the-art equipment, new floors, and updated lighting.

The fresh, modern look of the clinic mirrors the look and feel of Sheltering Arms Institute’s main therapy gym at the hospital, making for a more seamless transition for patients as they progress from inpatient to outpatient therapy. This expanded multi-disciplinary clinic is now able to better serve more patients who live in East Richmond.

Sheltering Arms has been meeting the needs of our community and those needs have evolved significantly. Over the last year, we’ve redoubled our effort to better serve those vulnerable communities in our city.

LaFonya Hines was our honorary ribbon-cutter at the re-opening ceremony for the Laburnum clinic on August 25, 2022. In June of 2022, LaFonya suffered a stroke and had little mobility on the left side of her body. She spent two weeks at Sheltering Arms Institute for inpatient rehab and described her progress as “miraculous.” She continued her recovery journey at the newly renovated Laburnum clinic and described it as a “seamless transition with the same level of care, same dedication, and same technology. It was like leaving one family and coming to the next for the second part of my rehab.”

BRIGHTER FUTURE FOR MORE PATIENTS

Outpatient Clinics & Corporate Services Move Under SAI, Partner for L.I.F.E. Services Positioned for Growth

When Sheltering Arms Corporation and VCU Health set out to reinvent rehabilitation, the first major milestone came to fruition in 2020 with the opening of our state-of-thescience inpatient rehab hospital that brought together both organizations’ inpatient care programs. The next major milestone was formally realized in July 2022, when outpatient therapy services and corporate support services transitioned under the Sheltering Arms Institute umbrella. Partner for L.I.F.E. Services, which include fitness and Club

Rec, continue to operate under Sheltering Arms Corporation. These extraordinary community services complement the inpatient and outpatient care offered through Sheltering Arms Institute.

Across this continuum, we work together to enhance the value we bring to patients and the community. In the field of rehabilitation, we are in a truly unique position, offering expertise, care, service, and technology to help our patients achieve the best possible outcomes.

ADVANCED THERAPEUTIC TECHNOLOGIES

Make the Simple Possible

Entering rehabilitation, patients are typically laser focused on getting back to life’s simple pleasures — activities that are often taken for granted like walking a dog or driving a car. For one young patient named Hayden, it was fishing. Today’s therapeutic technologies are making those simple pleasures possible.

In the hands of our clinicians, leading-edge equipment, such as the Bioness Vector bodyweight support system, virtual reality, Motek RYSEN, Neofect Smart Pegboard, and Tyromotion DIEGO, helps patients get the most benefit from their time in therapy.

Using a variety of technology in combination with a rod and reel, Hayden’s care team designed therapy sessions that simulated fishing right in the therapy gym. They also customized his treatment around other things he loves such as playing games and making sushi.

In addition to allowing patients to practice activities that bring them joy, clinicians can use technology to measure progress and adjust treatment as needed. Ultimately, technology empowers therapists to achieve their professional calling—helping patients achieve the best possible outcomes.

Different technologies enable clinicians to create programs tailored to patients’ goals

Hayden has made a full recovery and is once again enjoying one of his favorite activities thanks to the dedication of his care team combined with advanced therapeutic technology.

ACOURAGE

Functional improvement is a multifaceted measurement of physical skills and abilities between admission and graduation. On average, patients who receive inpatient rehabilitation from Sheltering Arms Institute accomplish gains in mobility and selfcare that are significantly greater than the national average.

NUMBERS AT A GLANCE

Patients who receive physical rehab at Sheltering Arms Institute have a higher chance of returning home versus returning to acute care or going to a skilled nursing facility.

UNWAVERING OPTIMISM

Samar Lemons

Determined to Overcome the Odds After Paralyzing Injury

It was a chilly day in March 2021. Samar Lemons’ senior football season at Henrico High School had been postponed to the spring due to the COVID pandemic. During a midgame kickoff return, Samar was hit by an opposing player, causing him to sustain a C4 spinal cord injury at the base of his neck and lose all function and mobility below his chest. “I thought my life was over,” Samar recalls.

After receiving care at VCU Health and transitioning out of state for inpatient rehab, Samar returned home and began outpatient therapy at Sheltering Arms that summer. “I’ve basically been on every machine in here,” he chuckles. When his time in outpatient therapy was up, Samar continued his progress with Sheltering Arms, this time in NeuroFit, an exercise program for individuals with neurological conditions.

Once a week, he is guided through a customized, hour-long workout complete with a warm up, strength and cardio exercises, stretching, and more. “NeuroFit definitely helps me a lot. It gets me loose, makes me stronger, and I can tell a difference when I go home because I go straight to sleep,” Samar says with a smile. While the workout is great, he says it’s the people who keep him coming back. “It just makes me happy to work with them. They laugh and joke with me, and they’re very encouraging.” Clearly, Samar’s experience at Sheltering Arms has supported him to continue living by his motto: “Keep pushing because the only way you’re going to fail is if you don’t try.”

MIND, BODY & SPIRIT

Kevin Brown

Mental and Physical Recovery Journey

In October 2022, Kevin Brown suffered an anoxic brain injury due to a massive pulmonary embolism and was rushed to VCU Medical Center. Just six days later, he suffered a stroke, resulting in the loss of his eyesight. After conducting research and speaking with his medical team, Kevin’s wife, Toni, decided that Sheltering Arms Institute (SAI) was the best next step.

When Kevin first arrived at SAI, he was unable to walk or sit up on his own and had limited vision. Throughout his inpatient stay, he worked diligently with his team on improving the mobility in his arms and legs utilizing the Bioness Vector for bodyweight support, but also on improving his mental health. “It wasn’t just the physical type of care, but it was the

emotional side of it too,” Toni said. “That there is a light at the end of the tunnel because it was a really, really dark tunnel we were in for a long time.”

Upon graduating from inpatient rehab one month later, Kevin began outpatient therapy at SAI able to walk with assistance and transfer to and from his wheelchair independently. By January, Kevin surprised his therapist by arriving to one of his sessions without his wheelchair and walking on his own.

Today, Kevin has regained nearly all of his sight and has plans to return to work this spring. Until then, he’s cherishing his time at home with Toni and their children.

If you put in the effort, you will see results. If you are willing to do the work, they will 100 percent get you where you want to be.

CLIFTON HOUSE

A RECORD YEAR OF GIVING

Sheltering Arms Foundation

As we celebrated Ability Day during National Rehabilitation Awareness Week in September 2022, the giving power proved to be amazing! The response of support by donors was incredible. Not only was a challenge gift met by reaching 100 gifts, but Sheltering Arms Institute leadership also made an incredible donation of $12,000. Our first Ability Day to support Project Gratitude was a big success, and we are proud to share that the Foundation received 160 gifts totaling more than $83,000!

Gifts from Project Gratitude funded new advanced therapeutic technologies at the Laburnum and Hanover outpatient locations as well as welcome bags and wheelchair totes for every hospital patient. Because of this special generosity, Project Gratitude will continue to support programs that improve patient outcomes.

The Clifton House Circle honors individuals who have made legacy gift commitments by naming Sheltering Arms Foundation as a beneficiary in their estate plans.

CAREGIVER TURNED TEAM MEMBER

Husband’s Inspirational Care Launches Nursing Career at Sheltering Arms Institute

In August 2022, Donnie Foster had an accident at work that caused him to lose his left leg. He underwent an above-the-knee amputation at VCU Health before transferring to Sheltering Arms Institute for rehabilitation. “I was admitted for two weeks, and then I came back later for bootcamp after my prosthetic arrived for another week,” Donnie said about Sheltering Arms Institute’s limb loss program.

During her husband’s inpatient stay, Cindy Behr visited often and got an inside look at what goes on behind the scenes at Sheltering Arms Institute. A nurse herself, Cindy was impressed. She says she never pictured herself working in rehabilitation nursing until she saw Sheltering Arms Institute. “Now, I can’t think of anyplace else that I’d want to work. It’s very rewarding because the patients are all very grateful for everything that you do for them. People appreciate you.”

As for Donnie, his recovery journey continues. He attends outpatient therapy twice a week at Sheltering Arms Institute Bon Air, participates in SAI’s support group for individuals with limb loss and limb difference, and has plans to become a peer mentor for other patients coping with limb loss. “Don’t give up. You’re going to have your good days, and you’re going to have your bad days, but just try to stay positive and focused,” Donnie said. “It’s not a race; it’s a slow and steady pace.”

All the people who took care of Donnie were so kind and caring and very professional. The nurses all said, ‘We love working here, it’s great. Come join us!’ So, I did.
