Real Heroes are Men who Fall and Fail and are Flawed, but Win Out in the End because they’ve Stayed True to their Ideals and Beliefs and Commitments:

EXPERIENCE OF REAL FIREFIGHTER HERO MR. GHOSH: A HERO HAS FACED IT ALL Mumbai Fire Brigade is not only dealing with Fire, House Collapse and Other Rescue incidents to save life and property risking their own life but also helped to make Mumbaikars safe by doing Sanitization work during Pandemic. In the process about 250 Fire Brigade Officers and Staff got infected due to Corona. Nine Covid employees lost their life also. But that did not deter the Firemen to continue their duty.

Mr. Deepak Ghosh Divisional Fire Officer (Marol, Mumbai) even donated Blood Plasma after his recovery from Corona to save lives of Two serious Covid Patients in Nanavati Hospital on occasion of Independence Day. His story in his own words: I was having fever, sore throat, body pain and headache. After medication for 3 days, I felt perfect. After 2 days again there was slight fever and uneasiness when I suspected something fishy and decided to go for Corona Test next day morning. th

Wednesday 24 June 2020 was very hectic in the office and I went to sleep at 12 in the night. After 1 hr at 1 am I had to responded to a major fire call at Marol as per Fire control room message. Fire was confined to oil, kerosene, machinery, plastic material etc in an Industrial Estate. I directed to surrounded the fire from three side with 4 water jets, 1 high pressure gun and later with two foam lines. 08

During firefighting I felt giddiness and breathlessness. So I went few steps back and sat on drum kept nearby. However suddenly I fainted but I managed to remove my Helmet and Balacava mask of PPE. My colleague Officer and fireman shifted me to Nanavati Hospital in ambulance with nasal oxygen. Though I gained consciousness immediately and was well oriented, was feeling sever weakness and heavy breathing. I was admitted in Casualty for further treatment. Unluckily I also tested positive for Covid swab test and my CT scan showed slight pneumoniatic patch. My wife also tested Covid positive and was admitted in September 2020 - www.visionmediahitech.com

COVID-19 STORY same room. My daughter managed herself in the home quarantine where my colleague officer, office staff and my friend took good care of her during our absence. We finished our prescribed medicine however we again th th tested positive twice after 6 and 9 day.

patients are testing positive again and again but plus point it is getting weaker. Don’t worry guys. Keep the morale high. What I felt as a sportsperson is Fighting with Corona is like doing Triathlon that is fighting on three fronts like Mental, Physical and Social.

With the Grace of God and blessings of Elders, we were discharged from Hospital after 9 days of good care and treatment by Doctors, Nurses and all Hospital staff. As per new guidelines We are home quarantine for 14 days. Both of us are now fine and without any Symptoms. Thanks a lot for all good wishes, support and concern of near and dear ones.

Our Mental strength is the key thing in the fight against Covid. During our battle remember you are the one and only person who will be there on the field. Our family, friends, relatives won’t be able to help us. So one should be in high mental frame. It’s your will that will help to heal.

First of all, Nothing to worry now as we can overcome Corona. Only thing is that should be detected and treated before it becomes fatal. Watch for symptoms like Fever, Cough, Cold, Headache, Body Pain, Sore Throat, Taste and Smell Loss, Loose Motion, Heavy Breathing and start early medical treatment. If severity increases or symptoms persist after 3 days then doing Corona test is advisable. CT scan is one of the IMP test for lungs condition. Most of us are mostly taking Kada and other imunity boosters. The most important thing is to monitor our SpO2 (Saturated Peripheral Oxygen in the Blood) level. It’s a vital parameter and I recommend we should have own Pulse Oximeter (Rs.1500-2000). Atleast check your and all family members oxygen level and pulse twice a day. Ideally it is around 97-99 percent. Be alert if it falls below 95 percent. In any case should not drop below 90 percent when you need medical attention. Higher level of pulse above 85-90 is also indicative of fever. In case of other symptoms present, check the O2 level min 4 times a day. As this virus affects our lungs and respiration system, we may feel heavy breathing/ breathlessness. So we can start medical treatment early if we monitor our O2 level and avoid emergency arising due to breathing trouble which is most critical thing to treat. Drink hot water and take water vapours. I repeat that taking continuous Hot water and steam are prevention as well as Cure which is free of cost. Corona is now spreading fast but loosing its fatality. Like human being it is also gaining immunity and hence September 2020 - www.safesecuremagazine.com

Physical fitness is what you do prior to your illness as we can’t do much during our fight. Have healthy and nutritious diet. We should do moderate exercise and Simple breathing exercise to keep our lungs and other organs healthy. Daily concentrate on your breathing for few minutes including deep and slow inhalation and exhalation (belly breathing using our diaphragm). Socially be in contact with Optimistic persons with positive vibes. Your own people may treat you like untouchable. Luckily we have very strong and supportive family of officers and staff in the Fire brigade who takes good care. Do not get more involved in news channels, fake videos, social media. One should use d electronic media judiciously to get info and knowledge but should not allow it to control our mind. Maintain good relationship with our neighbors as they are the first to respond and take care of our family. Remember this Pandemic has reminded and made us realise about our basic needs only and how all are at same level in this life. Last but not the least, take precautions so as to avoid Corona but do not fear and be brave if unluckily we get infected. Do follow SMS rule of Social Distance, Mask and Sanitise. We all can surely come out of it. It’s only matter of bad time that you have to encounter with symptomatic treatment. Keep some cash handy to deal with any emergency situation. Respect Doctors, Paramedics and all other Corona Warriors. Do not panic but Relax and get prepared for any eventuality. Do good for others, don’t forget humanity and Be blessed always. I am now daily counselling Corona patients to guide and increase their moral and wish to donate blood plasma for the treatment of Covid Patients. 09

How SMBs Security Benets From Thermal Cameras? Submi ed by Prama Hikvision India Some technologies that seem to be very common now were first used in military fields, such as radar, GPS, and others. However, over me, the technology matured and products can now be put into mass produc on, resul ng in significant cost reduc ons and making military technology more widely used in general civilian applica ons. Thermal technology is another example, and possibly the most exci ng right now. Here's why. Thermal technology works on the principle that objects above the absolute zero (-273°C) emit some amount of thermal radia on, or heat. Due to varying intensi es of heat radia on, people, animals, and even inanimate objects can be clearly observed using infrared technology, even in the absence of light. Thermal technology has long been used in the field of security, especially in complex environments such as border protec on, forest fire detec on, airport security, and so on. This imaging technology remains unaffected by visual impediments such as fog or mist and so offers a unique type of performance in harsh condi ons. While thermal technology is fairly well known, experience with thermal cameras is not so common. Users o en mistakenly believe that they are only installed in large and expensive projects as they are almost always associated with high-end PTZ cameras.

criminals can s ll quietly approach and damage power facili es under cover of darkness, suspending normal opera ons. Some core areas, such as the power room in an office building, have high standards for security requirements. Conven onal CCTV systems can cater to the needs of surveillance during the day, but at night, criminals can s ll quietly approach and damage power facili es under cover of darkness, suspending normal opera ons. Addi onally, increased opera ng costs due to false alarms is also a hot item for SMBs. The most common false alarms are caused by small animals and falling leaves. Here, thermal equipment is already making life easier for many users. Thermal cameras integrated with deep learning algorithms can classify people and vehicles, aler ng security staff only when these two objects enter the monitoring area to reduce false alarms. Therefore, thermal cameras, free from special ligh ng requirements, can and should be applied in a wider variety of scenarios since they can easily do the job needed. They have strong environmental adaptability and can bolster perimeter protec on with high accuracy detec on in unpredictable ligh ng or bad weather.

Furthermore, with the implementa on of GDPR guidelines, thermal cameras are also increasingly being used in residen al communi es. According to regula ons in residen al perimeter protec on scenarios, cameras with visible light channels are not allowed to capture images in local neighborhoods due to privacy risks over personal data. In recent years, with the rapid development of thermal Fortunately, the "fuzzy" video rendered by thermal imaging does not detector technology, coupled with the populariza on of violate privacy issues while guaranteeing high-quality detec on. the use of thermal products in the applica on side, the cost of using thermal technology has dropped sharply.  Affordable Prices, Consistent Performance So, can thermal cameras be used in small and medium With breakthroughs in imaging, algorithms, and intelligent business markets, or even home security? applica ons, Prama Hikvision has introduced a new affordable thermal camera, which is designed for perimeter protec on and fire  Rethinking Thermal Cameras preven on. This thermal camera is specifically designed for shortFor SMBs users, preven ng intrusion is one of the most range monitoring - up to 70 meters - so they are really best-suited for important measures in protec ng property. Boon Edam’s Tourlock Security Door Reaches 40th Anniversary as Proven Tailgating Prevention Solution Reliable Security Revolving Door Has Evolved Over The Years, Con nuing To Meet Today’s Demand For Tailga ng And Piggybacking Preven on

 Preventing Piggybacking with Sophisticated Technology The Tourlock combines premium construc on with the op on to include the intelligence of a sophis cated, near-infrared detec on technology housed in the ceiling, called StereoVision®. StereoVision scans each compartment during rota on to verify that a user is alone before allowing them to enter a secure facility. If more than one person is detected, the door will stop rota ng and alarm, then slowly rotate backwards, forcing both users to exit the door.

Boon Edam Inc., a global leader in security entrances and architectural revolving doors, is th proud to announce the 40 anniversary of the launch of the company’s renowned Tourlock security revolving door. The demand for this reliable security entrance, first built in 1980, con nues to grow as the risks to organiza ons due to unauthorized entry increase. Today, the Tourlock is used in thousands of facili es worldwide including commercial campuses and government buildings due to its high level of throughput and ability to prevent unauthorized access without the need for manned supervision. In addi on, the Tourlock has always been an automa c, “touchless” security solu on requiring no contact from users during ac va on and opera on, making it as relevant today as it was decades ago.  Mitigating Tailgating by Design Tailga ng is the most common way intruders can slip into a secure facility. The Tourlock, by design, prevents an unauthorized user from following an authorized user in the trailing compartment. This working principle removes the burden on people to “be impolite” by refusing to hold open a swing door for a stranger. An added feature of the Tourlock is that it stops rota ng in the “plus posi on” during a tailga ng a empt. This places a “wall” between the intruder and the secure area and the intruder can only turn back and step out of the door, while the authorized user con nues onward into the secure area without any interference. 20

The technology in StereoVision has been enhanced con nuously over the decades and today is able to func on reliably in a wide variety of ligh ng environments, including outdoor ligh ng. Its reliable performance over the years has proven to be an extremely reliable method of preven ng piggybacking into a secure area without the excessive false rejec ons.  Add-Ons for Increased Security For added security, the Tourlock security door on a building envelope can be ou i ed with Level 3 bullet-resistant glass, capable of stopping three .44 magnum bullets. Addi onally, biometric iden ty verifica on devices can be a ached to the end post or a pedestal to provide a highly secure and touchless authoriza on method. The Tourlock is capable of integra ng with virtually any access system on the market.  Integrated Diagnostic Software for Fast Service Resolutions In recent year, the Tourlock was upgraded to include an integrated, IP-enabled so ware pla orm called BoonConnect that helps technicians diagnose the door and get it running quickly should there be an outage. An on-site technician simply logs in from a remote laptop, cell phone or tablet and can review performance data as well as diagnos c informa on about the door’s sensors, drive system, motor and more. This visibility can save hours or days of me resolving any issues. “We at Boon Edam owe a great deal of our success to the Tourlock in the last 10 years. It’s been cri cal in mee ng the growing security requirements of the Fortune 500 and along with our turns le offering has helped launch our Enterprise team to the level of success they have today,” says Valerie Anderson, President and Managing Director, Boon Edam, Inc. “Even a er 40 years, the demand for reliable security at the entry has only con nued to increase and the Tourlock con nues to prove itself me and me again.” For more informa on visit: www.boonedam.in September 2020 - www.visionmediahitech.com

As a result of these three features, the BoonAssist TQ is specified for many projects where user comfort and safety are considered essen al. In addi on, the BoonAssist TQ can be upgraded with extra security op ons: a remote locking capability, an instantaneous panic-locking capability (in case of a threat trying to enter the building) and integra on with access control systems to restrict access into public buildings during a erhours. “Boon Edam is driven to provide safe and secure entrances around the globe and we’re con nuously i n v e s n g t o e n s u r e o u r p r o d u c t s e xc e e d opera onal standards,” says Valerie Anderson, President and Managing Director at Boon Edam Inc. “When our entrances confirm with UL standards, our North American customers gain peace of mind knowing that a reputable 3rd party has rigorously tested and confirmed they will operate safely at any loca on.” UL was founded in 1894 and today helps companies demonstrate safety and confirm compliance. Services offered by UL include: inspec on, advisory services, educa on and training, tes ng, audi ng and analy cs, cer fica on so ware solu ons, and marke ng claim verifica on.

The highly innova ve and unique solu on provides municipali es and organiza ons with the ability to automa cally detect, analyze, and differen ate human behaviors, such as an individual slipping and falling vs. being thrown to the ground, or two people embracing vs. figh ng, or a peaceful parade vs. a riot. viisights’ powerful solu on also delivers analy cs ideal for helping organiza ons get back to work safely and fight the spread of COVID-19 such as recognizing close proximity encounters between individuals that may violate social distancing mandates. “viisights unique solu on can accurately detect and analyze the behavior of individuals and groups of people using deep learning and me-based vision analysis,” said Asaf Birenzvieg, Co-Founder and CEO of viisights. “viisights behavioral recogni on delivers superior video intelligence that can help keep ci es and businesses safer and more secure while reducing the manpower and associated costs necessary to monitor vast numbers of live and recorded video sources.” 22

viisights behavioral recogni on solu on can be deployed onpremise or via the cloud, and is scalable to an infinite number of cameras with data analysis provided within seconds of a triggered event. The innova ve solu on is based on real- me temporal and holis c video streaming analysis using video clips rather than standalone images, and employs convolu onal neural networks and LSTM models for training its core AI engine. This creates a unique event signature that includes the scene par cipants and their extracted features, such as posi oning, movement, size, and rela onship with others. The informa on can be used to detect poten ally dangerous or high-interest situa ons in progress, and to automa cally send alerts to other inves ga ve applica ons. High-interest situa ons detected by the system include but are not limited to: people figh ng, riots and vandalism, people brandishing weapons, blood on individuals, contextual loitering, a person abandoning an object, people wearing or not wearing masks, movements such as running, walking, or climbing, groups of people gathering or running, people climbing over fences or loitering near a fence, people entering a perimeter without permission, people in roadways, vehicles on sidewalks, vehicle collisions, traffic jams, people riding bicycles or motorcycles, people entering or exi ng a vehicle, and smoke and fire detec on. viisights behavioral recogni on solu on successfully minimizes false alerts and their related costs while maximizing safety and security, providing a new level of video intelligence for predic ve analysis, incident preven on, response management, and risk mi ga on. By only analyzing general behavior pa erns of individuals, groups, vehicles, and traffic-flows, viisights technology does not iden fy faces or license plates to protect personal privacy. viisights advanced capabili es were recognized early on, when the company was designated as a “Cool Vendor” by leading analyst firm Gartner in its Cool Vendors in AI for Computer Vision: Balance Business Risk and Reward report published in August of 2018 which states “automated scene analysis used to generate real- me insight into human/object behavior is at the cu ng edge of video analy cs today”.

Covid-19 and the Future of Cities: 9 Emerging Trends in Digital Transformation By Manu Fernandez & Sergio García i Rodríguez | 2020

This ar cle is part of the series ‘Covid-19 & The Future of Ci es’ – by antever

The Covid-19 crisis has accelerated many technological adop on processes that were predicted to be more gradual. Two elements have fueled a shared dynamic by the countries affected by the pandemic: on the one hand, the ini al successes prompted by technology-intensive solu ons in Taiwan, Singapore or South Korea gave rise to an effect of imita on in other countries. On the other hand, the peculiari es of the virus have made it clear that the most successful immunological strategy – track and test – can only be highly effec ve if the case tracking rely on technologymediated devices and solu ons. The combina on of these two dynamics has served as a mul plier and accelerator – at a higher pace than any other measure or strategy in the last decade – of a previous and already widespread trend: The digital transforma on of all industrial sectors, social spheres and also, obviously, of the public administra on. Not surprisingly, need and urgency are great allies of innova on. Most of the public ins tu ons in charge of managing all levels of the response to the Covid-19 crisis have faced the urgent need to assess their current digital technological capabili es while facing sudden processes of technological adop on and implemen ng solu ons that needed a deeper public assessment. In this framework, they have found themselves at a greater distance from countries such as South Korea in terms of data analy cs, informa on integra on or resource and capabili es availability for the implementa on of technological ini a ves. In parallel, public authori es have met with the need to find effec ve ways to communicate the evolu on of the pandemic, the response and its implica ons for ci zens within a complex context of social distress and informa on oversatura on.

1 | Public Services: The Final Push for Digitalization The covid-19 crisis has been an unexpected accelerator of the digi za on of public services. The compulsory switch of the administra on internal procedures and the formali es for ci zens to the online mode marks a milestone in a tendency that is sure to be accentuated. 2 | Smart City Models Will Need to Be Rethought The links between ci es and pandemics are complex but undeniable. From a technological perspec ve, both the response to the crisis and its consequences require a reevalua on of the smart city models in order to connect them to the new priori es. 3 | We Need More Sophisticated Data Analytics The management of the pandemic has highlighted the need for much more robust and sophis cated sta s cal and data analysis mechanisms, especially for those sectors and services that have reached their limit capacity. Data governance will be a priority to ensure the public value of data and the democra c control of personal informa on.

TOWARDS A SMART DIGITAL FUTURE: 9 TRENDS IN URBAN MANAGEMENT 30

September 2020 - www.visionmediahitech.com

4 | The Time to Consolidate Digital Rights There is an urgent need to develop adequate frameworks to assess the impact of technology on privacy and digital rights. The implementa on of different digital responses (ar ficial intelligence, mobile applica ons, facial recogni on) is linked to very in mate spheres of personal privacy. 5 | Public Sector: The Potential of Innovation and Intrapreneurship Public administra on organiza ons have shown a large capacity for innova on in terms of digital transforma on. Due to its unexpected nature, the management of the crisis has revealed the poten al of innova on and intrapreneurship of the public sector to put in place agile imagina ve solu ons. 6 | Addressing the Digital Divide: A Priority Although in an accelerated and conjunctural way, teleworking, online educa on or telemedicine have become the norm. This has revealed the existence of a large digital divide with regard to both the opportuni es to access communica on technologies and the skills to use them – which will need to be addressed as a priority to close the vulnerability gaps.

A context of informa on oversatura on and ci zens’ constant exposure to a mul -channel, segmented reality where opaque algorithms condi on access to informa on are just some of the hurdles that they will need to overcome. 9 | Fake News: Also a Public Health Threat The covid-19 crisis shows that disinforma on and so-called fake news is also a threat to public health. And that the growing power of social media in the condi oning of public opinion and poli cal discourse – in form and content – exemplifies the gap between the poli cal rhythms and the current trends of digital communica on – in a paradigm of social communica on radically different from that of ten years ago. WHAT COMES NEXT? THE TIME FOR PLANNING AND ANTICIPATION In the past few weeks, the sense of urgency has been at the core of the world’s digital response to the covid-19. In parallel, the digital society is accelera ng at a pace that is difficult for our technical and poli cal leaders to keep up with. However, if we agree that the curve of the pandemic has been fla ened, the me has come for be er planning and a more op mal organiza on of new resources. Thus, in this new context, local, regional and na onal governments have the opportunity and the duty to reshape their strategy for the deployment of technology in city life in a short- and medium-term. And this applies to the way ci es work, to public services, to the interac on and communica on between public administra on and ci zens, to our daily rou ne. And to the internal transforma on of companies and the rethinking of their future plans.

7 | Civic Tech for a More Inclusive Digitalization Civic Technologies – and par cularly digital manufacturing technologies have been made known to the general public, offering viable alterna ves and showing a large capacity to involve stakeholders and an enormous diversity. This will foster a more inclusive understanding of how the technology ecosystem can contribute to smart ci es and to the digital society. 8 | Effective Digital Communication for an Operational Leadership Public ins tu ons will have to re-evaluate and reinforce their digital communica on strategies in order to consolidate their opera onal leadership in periods of crisis like the current one. September 2020 - www.safesecuremagazine.com

It is highly convenient that this rethinking process looks beyond the immediate social and economic consequences of the crisis and places people and human needs at the center of technological adop on. And that it does so by encouraging the innova ve capacity of society and a aching greater importance to the synergy between science and technology for a be er, more accurate decision making. This in turn must be performed without losing sight of the ethical implica ons of this process. In short, we are on the verge of a moment where governments, industries and companies have the challenge to move towards technological resilience. To harness technology and innova on not only to minimize the current risks, but also to an cipate possible future adversi es and emerge stronger from the crisis. 31

Online Safety and Security During COVID-19 Cyber Threats are not new, but in the midst of the global COVID-19 Pandemic, the risks to society, the economy, and to our children, have mul plied enormously. Cyber Criminals and other malign actors are using the COVID-19 crisis to launch social engineering a acks: individuals are facing online threats and harms from increased fraud, phishing, and extor on whilst ransomware a acks have compromised mission cri cal systems, such as governments, companies, media facili es, and even the United Na ons, including the World Health Organiza on (WHO). Tech companies have seen a spike in phishing traffic of 300 per cent across their networks. Tens of millions of daily malware emails and COVID-19 related spam massages were detected by social media, such as Google in just one week. Meanwhile, there has been an alarming increase in online child abuse, which has led to the doubling of suspected online child exploita on cases reported to the US Na onal Center for Missing and Exploited Children. 32

“I suspect we're only seeing the p of the iceberg, with many countries simply lacking the technical and human capacity to track the level of malicious content passing through their networks," said Doreen Bogdan-Mar n, Director of ITU's Te l e co m m u n i ca o n D eve l o p m e nt Bureau at the fourth Digital Co-opera on webinar on 'Online Safety and Security during COVID19'. "Can we envisage a future where we get the upper hand, or where we stamp out cybercrime and online abuse?" asked Director Bogdan-Mar n.  Protecting Vulnerable Populations "The nega ve impact on our digital safety and security affects everyone, in par cular the most vulnerable, our children" said Fabrizio Hochschild, Under SecretaryGeneral and Special Adviser to the Secretary General on Digital Coopera on. September 2020 - www.visionmediahitech.com

“This is the me to do everything in our power to keep children safe online. The virus knows no borders. And online perpetrators respect no borders. Therefore, we need to work together across borders," said Her Majesty Queen Silvia of Sweden. "Making sure that the recommenda ons that have been developed are turned into concrete ac on, is one very good way to start." Her Majesty welcomed global efforts to protect children online, highligh ng the Broadband Commission COVID Agenda for Ac on, the joint technical note on COVID-19 and the joint call for ac on to protect children during COVID-19 by several global leaders.  International Collaboration Protec ng vulnerable popula ons and cri cal infrastructure from cyberthreats during the COVID-19 pandemic calls for proac ve ac on by mul -stakeholder ac on, greater capacity building to reduce vulnerabili es in underserved areas, and cross border collabora on, agreed leaders assembled for the webinar. Catherine De Bolle, Execu ve Director of Europol, highlighted the importance of monitoring the impact of the COVID19 pandemic on the cybercrime landscape, and advocated for inves ng in preven ve educa onal campaigns and law enforcement ac vi es to tackle increased cyber risks - in par cular online child abuse. "The right informa on at the right me can save lives," said Ghada Fathi Waly, Execu ve Director, United Na ons Office on Drugs and Crimes (UNODC). "This problem brings together the very actors we need to help improve global responses, so that children and vulnerable groups can be safe.”  Reasons for Optimism Despite the Cybersecurity challenges that we are currently facing, some members of the panel noted reasons for o p m i s m . From the collec on and exchange of vital health informa on to remote working and the use of various digital services to limit physical contact, "digital development has allowed us to cope with

the crisis and provide mely responses in every face of its environment," said H.E. Urmas Reinsalu, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Estonia. "We have an unprecedented opportunity, coming out of COVID-19 over the coming months and years, to protect children more in the short term, triggering new levels of awareness, new levels of resources new levels of ac on to keep children safe online for the future," said Howard Taylor, Execu ve Director of the Global Partnership to End Violence Against Children.  Actions to Limit Cybercrime Several concrete ac ons that have been implemented in response to the cyber risks surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic were presented to the group. Mauri us, for example, has bolstered repor ng systems, increased awareness campaigns launched by their Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT) and issued cyber security alerts to the public. Mauri us is also upda ng guidelines and best prac ces on a regular basis, said Deepak Balgobin, the Minister of Informa on Technology, Communica on and Innova on of Mauri us. "It is important to have comprehensive measures to educate our ci zens on how to respond to cyber threats," he said. R.S. Sharma, Chairman, Telecom Regulatory Authority, India, agreed: "Governments can use the opportunity while communica ng about the virus and the spread of the disease, to flag the a en on of people towards threats that lurk in cyberspace." Verizon is also working with their customers to quickly address challenges with child online safety for the children. "We only have a usage today of roughly 25 per cent of the parental control in the network. That is why we doubled down in the last eight weeks enormously on the advocacy to all our 120 million consumers about how to turn on the parental control service," said Hans Erik Vestberg, Chief Execu ve Officer, Verizon. BitSight, meanwhile, have created a program to help reduce the cyber risk of cri cal infrastructure, such as hospitals and energy and electricity providers, by monitoring security issues and sharing informa on quickly.  More Needs to be Done Panellists agreed that all stakeholders - from government to the private sector - have an important role to play in tackling this serious issue. But "more needs to be done", said Under Secretary-General Fabrizio Hochschild. "We're only going to solve it to the extent we can work effec vely together co-opera on between different stakeholder groups needs to be stepped up," he urged. The webinar brought more than 400 par cipants, represen ng government, policymakers, members of civil society and private sector companies to discuss specific security challenges that the world is facing during the COVID-19 crisis and the strategies that are being implemented to create safer and more secure access to digital service, as well as protec ng younger genera ons from poten al online threats.

A Comprehensive Overview of Safety and Security in the Workplace Learn about What comprises Workplace Security, Why Security is Important and How you should go about creating a Safe and Secure Workplace? • • • • • • • •

Access Control Policy Importance of Security Security Issues in Workplace Security Tips for Workplace Unauthorized Access Emergency Exits Server Room Security Facility Maintenance

 What is Workplace Security? It is basically the process to protect an employee from work related illness and injury and to make the workplace (building etc) secure from intruders. Every company should have an Environmental, Safety and Health Policy Statement, in other words, a workplace safety plan. Security is one of the most vital aspects that a person looks in a workplace before joining the company. It is the duty of the firm to provide a secure working environment to its employees. Therefore, proper Security Systems like CCTV and other security equipment should be in place so as to monitor the incomings and outgoings. Using biometric scans or other such devices ensure that only employees can enter or leave the office building. It is also important to conduct security checks from me to me such that the loopholes (if any) can be can be looked into. The security system in place will thus be strengthened. Which are the Various Aspects of Workplace Security? • Office Security Guidelines • Workplace Surveillance • Security Audit Checklist • IS-906 • Workplace Security Awareness • Informa on Security 34

The Importance of having a Workplace Security Plan Along with the physical security of the employees, it is essen al to ensure that important data, networks, so ware, equipment and company's assets are also protected. According to a research, near about 2.8 billion customer data records were hacked into by the end of the year 2017.  A Productive Work Environment with a Secured Plan As men oned earlier, a company must have a security program in place. A person will feel secure knowing that the building she works in is secured. When it comes to data security, it is important to have a protected network such that it is not easy to hack into. Moreover, the network should not be shared with any outsider and should be strictly for office purposes.  Lower Employee Turnover Rate if the Work Environment is Safe Employees will, of course, be insecure if the area the office is situated is not too secure. Furthermore, if the building does not have any security system then they will slowly back out of the company. The number of absentees will gradually increase. September 2020 - www.visionmediahitech.com

To avoid more dropouts or absentees it is important to implement security in the workplace.  Higher Standards of the Workplace With a proper security program in place, the company premises will have higher standards. It will also ensure that a neat and clean environment is maintained.  Happier Employees with a Proper Security Plan If the cri cal data of the company and its employees are secured, the working environment is much healthier. Communica ons among employees will increase and it contributes towards a happier workplace.  Fewer Insurance Claims if the Employees are Protected Insurances are as important as security in the workplace. A firm should take all the precau onary steps to protect its cri cal data and employees. Regular security checks should be done to check whether the plan is foolproof or not. Changes must be brought in from me to me as it becomes easy for the hackers to into an old system. These steps will lead to fewer insurance claims by the employees.  The Employees-A Company's Most Valuable Asset is Protected The employees form the backbone of a company.  Security Tips for the Workplace One of the best ways of implemen ng a strong security system in the workplace is to have access control facility. An access control system runs on so ware that is essen al for managing and monitoring who has access to the doors, printers etc. As a ma er of fact, unauthorized access to buildings is one of the biggest threats for companies.  Gates: If the opening and closing of the main gates of the office building are a part of the access control system then, the security check starts at the entry level itself. It should be paired with a surveillance device like CCTV such that the staff can confirm the entry of a visitor. The opening and the closing of the gates are generally operated through specialised locks.  Exterior Doors: A er the main entrance (gates) comes the security of the exterior doors. The employees can simply use their ID cards to open the doors or use biometric scans while the visitors are directed to a par cular entrance. A visitor's card should be given to them for the me they are in the office building.  Accoun ng Areas: There should be limited access to the HR and accoun ng areas. The employee or the visitor should have to take permission to get clearance to these two departments.  Data Closets and Warehouse Areas: Network security should be another priority of the company. Access to server rooms or data closets should thus be limited. The same goes for warehouse areas. For more info, check out our server room security guide.  Electrified Lock: The three types of electrified lock (electric strike, electromagne c lock and electrified hardware) are easy to install in the frame of the door.  Contactless Readers: It includes contactless smart card and standard prox. It has an easy installa on process. If the access control system is changed in the then, it necessitates changing the smart cards.  Biometrics: The biometrics has become a common part of the security system used in the office buildings. Fingerprint, Re na and Hand Geometry are some of the common varia ons of the biometrics. A company should thus employ a strong security system and the employees should also co-operate to ensure their safety and the safety of cri cal informa on. 35

Entrance Gate Safety By Arindam Bhadra

For anyone directly or indirectly responsible for security within an organiza on, it is important to ensure that all of your security doors and turns les are UL-listed. UL is one of a limited number of na onally-recognized tes ng laboratories (NRTL), a designa on given to those labs allowed by the Occupa onal Safety and Health Administra on (OSHA) to perform cer fica on of products to ensure they meet general industry, construc on, and electrical standards.  What is the UL 325 Standard? The UL 325 standard allows all applicable products to be tested at a na onally recognized tes ng laboratory. The new standard also:

One of the best-known brands in the realm of electrical and electronic equipment isn't a manufacturer, a distributor or a dealer. It's UL - formerly known as Underwriters Laboratories, recognized by users across the globe by the small symbol which appears on many of the devices you own today, such as toasters and children's toys. UL is a cer fica on organiza on that verifies the safety of the products it tests. For users, the UL symbol communicates trust. When a product has been UL-cer fied and listed as such, it means that it has been thoroughly tested by 3rd-party engineers to verify that it meets relevant standards and has been deemed safe for use in its intended condi ons. With this assurance, users have confirma on that the product is safe to use and it will perform properly -- they can trust in its quality.  Why is a Listing Important for Entrance Gate? There are good reasons to make sure that every electrical or electronic product used within a facility is UL-listed. That said, when you are purchasing a security product, there is a standard of responsibility that is even higher than that for other electronics. There are nega ve consequences for any non-func oning element in a building; however, a nonfunc oning security product introduces the poten al for a greater level of risk. Nowhere is this more true than for security doors and turns les. Installed at the perimeter of a facility and at any entry points which need to have controlled access, security entrances permit only authorized individuals to enter. *For a horizontal swing gate operator, at least two independent entrapment protection means are required in each direction of travel. Except, if there is-no entrapment zone in one direction of travel. only one means of entrapment protection is required in that direction of travel; however, the other direction must have two independent entrapment protection means.  Gate Denition and Classications UL 325 defines a gate as "a moving barrier such as a swinging, sliding, raising, lowering, rolling, or the like, barrier that is a stand-alone passage barrier or is that por on of a wall or fence system that controls entrance and/or egress by persons or vehicles and completes the perimeter of a defined area." The main types of gate operators/systems addressed in UL 325 are barrier, ver cal pivot gate, horizontal slide gate, swing gate, and ver cal li gate. It is important to note that all gate operators included in UL 325 are defined to be used with vehicular gates and NOT PEDESTRIAN GATES. gates provide a safe way for pedestrians to enter or exit a property and help to keep people away from vehicles and automa c vehicular gate systems. Four Distinct Types of Classications Have Been Established: Class I - Residen al Vehicular Gate Operator A vehicular gate operator (or system) intended for use in a home of one to four single family dwellings, or garage or parking area associated therewith. Class II - Commercial/General Access Vehicular Gate Operator A vehicular gate operator (or system) intended for use in a commercial loca on or building such as a mul -family housing unit (five or more single family units, hotel, garages, retail store or other building servicing the general public. Class III - Industrial/Limited Access Vehicular Gate Operator A vehicular gate operator (or system) intended for use in an industrial loca on or building such as a factory or loading dock area or other loca ons not intended to service the general public. Class IV - Restricted Access Vehicular Gate Operator A vehicular gate operator (or system) intended for use in a guarded industrial loca on or building such as an airport security area or other restricted access loca on not servicing the general public, in which unauthorized access is prevented via supervisions by security personnel. 37

 Installation Effects The UL 325 Gate Operator Provisions Have an Effect on Gate and Fence Dealers: 1. Gate and Fence dealers should look for an indica on of the class of each operator, which will be specified by the gate operator manufacturer. 2. Fence dealer sales personnel must match the site applica on with the class of operator. The gate operator manufacturer should be contacted if there is any ques on about the site applica on. 3. Ensure that all poten al entrapment zones are protected as required in Tables 32.1 and 32.2, which must be described in the instruc on manual for the gate operator. For most automa c gates, external entrapment protec on sensors will be required. The exper se of dealers is required to apply the provisions of the standard to the wide variety of site specific condi ons that are encountered in the field. 4. The gate operator manufacturer will provide extensive guidance and instruc ons which must be followed at all mes. Any ques ons should be directed to the gate operator manufacturer. 5. A minimum of two (2) warning signs must be displayed in the area of the gate. UL 325 includes specific requirements on the format, content, and placement of these signs.

emphasize the care and a en on that each device must be given prior to and during installa on. All external entrapment protec on sensors must be monitored, and the operator must verify the presence of every device at least once during each open and close cycle. According to the standard, "Upon monitoring, should any device not be present, or a fault condi on occur that precludes the sensing of an obstruc on, including an interrup on of the wireless signal to the wireless device or an open or short circuit in the wiring that connects the external entrapment device to the operator and the device's supply source, the operator shall func on with constant pressure…for the direc on of travel being protected, or shall only be able to be moved manually…." There shall be no modifica on made in the field to bypass, interfere with, or otherwise defeat the monitoring func on by adding, suppressing, or changing, either on the operator or on external entrapment protec on device(s) by the connec on of wires; terminals; switches; jumpers; or components supplied with the operator or with the external entrapment protec on device. For gate operators u lizing non-contact sensor devices (Type B1), instruc ons should be consulted for placement for each applica on and care should be exercised to reduce the risk of nuisance tripping. One or more of these devices must be installed in all poten al entrapment zones.

Factors Related to Automatic Gate Construction and Installation • Vehicular gate operators can ONLY be used on vehicular gates and never pedestrian gates. • A separate pedestrian gate must be provided for all sites where pedestrain access is likely. • The design and construc on of all automa c gates and the adjacent fence must conform to ASTM F2200. • Adequate clearance should be provided between a swinging gate and adjacent structures to reduce risk of entrapment. • A sliding gate should work smoothly with easy rolling/movement in both direc ons prior to the installa on of the operator. • All gate ac va on controls should be as far away from the gate as possible and must be at least 6 feet from the gate to reduce the opportunity for "reach-through" injury. • Warning signs and placards must be installed and be must visible in the area of the gate opening from both sides of the gate. • See ASTM F2200, Standard Specifica on for Automated Vehicular Gate Construc on for informa on about gate construc on.

For gate operators u lizing a con nuous pressure ac va ng device (Type D), controls must be placed so that a user has full view of the gate area when the gate is moving. A placard must be placed adjacent to the controls, and no other ac va on device shall be connected.

Device-Specific Installa on Instruc ons There are also specific installa on requirements for each type of external entrapment protec on sensor. These specific requirements

38

For gate operators u lizing contact sensor devices (Type B2), several requirements are spelled out in UL 325. One or more contact sensors shall be located in all poten al entrapment zones. A wired contact sensor shall be located, and its wiring arranged, so that communica on between the sensor and the gate operator is not subjected to mechanical damage. A wireless contact sensor shall be located where the transmission of the signals is not obstructed or impeded by building structures, natural landscaping, or similar obstruc ons, and shall func on under the intended end use condi ons.

6 Facts about Sprinkler System Corrosion and Steps to Help Minimize its Effects Corrosion is a costly problem for sprinkler systems. It can cause leakage which can lead to impaired sprinkler systems, water damage, and eventually replacement of the entire system. This blog looks at what corrosion is, where we can nd it, how it affects a sprinkler system, and how to spot and prevent it.  What is Corrosion? Generally, when we refer to corrosion we are talking about when a metal reacts with its environment which leads to deteriora on of the metal. In sprinkler systems this is o en when oxygen reacts with iron to form iron oxides, which we commonly refer to as "rust." This is further accelerated when it occurs in the presence of water, which helps the reac on. While this is the most common, there are other types of corrosion that can affect a sprinkler system such as microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) and galvanic corrosion. For any metallic component of a sprinkler system there is both external and internal corrosion. While both of these issues can lead to system failure, internal corrosion is more difficult to detect and causes more issues. Internal corrosion usually begins to form at the air/water interface while external corrosion is more dependent on the environment.  Where does Corrosion Occur? There are many loca ons where piping and sprinklers are more suscep ble to external corrosion. Most of these loca ons have different elements in the atmosphere that can speed up corrosion. A few common examples include:

Internal corrosion on the other hand occurs most commonly where metal, water and air are in contact with one another. This occurs in both wet and dry pipe systems. For wet pipe systems, corrosion occurs most o en near the pockets of air that could be trapped in high points. For dry and preac on systems the corrosion occurs most o en at the low points because that is where any residual water builds up.  How does Corrosion affect a Sprinkler System? Corrosion has a detrimental effect on sprinkler systems, causing the components to fail. For piping this can take the form of pinhole leaks or having rust buildup limit the flow of water (see image below). For sprinklers, corrosion can clog the water discharge orifice, affect the deflector and discharge pa ern, or completely seal the plug, preven ng water from reaching the fire. Other components such as piping hangers and fi ngs can also be suscep ble to corrosion, which can lead to further complica ons.

• Areas with fer lizer or manure (animal pens) • Pools or areas containing pool chemicals • Areas near the ocean that are exposed to outside salt air • Salt storage • Pipe is in contact with soil • Areas with excessive moisture (steam room) Listed corrosion resistant sprinklers and corrosion resistant piping, fi ngs and hangars are required to be installed in places where corrosive condi ons are known. Meanwhile all pipes and fi ngs installed on the exterior of the building are required to be corrosion resistant. 40

 What can I do to Minimize Corrosion? Completely elimina ng the possibility of corrosion is nearly impossible, however there are some steps that can be taken to help reduce the amount of corrosion in a system: September 2020 - www.visionmediahitech.com

• Be er Pipe Material: When trying to delay corrosion a great place to start is looking at the material used. Certain types of piping are more resistant to corrosion, such as plas c CPVC, copper or galvanized steel. There are also benefits to using thicker piping since rust will not eat through the wall of the pipe as quickly. Using higher quality material may cost more up front but it will extend the life of the system and increase reliability. • Corrosion Resistant Sprinkler: When sprinklers are installed in areas suscep ble to external corrosion, they need to be corrosion resistant. This means that they need to be either made out of corrosion resistant material, covered with a special coa ng such as wax, or plated with a corrosion resistant metal (see image below). • Water Supply: NFPA 13, Sandard for the Installa on of Sprinkler Systems, requires the water supply to be evaluated to determine if it contains any unusual corrosive proper es or is likely to contain MIC. If it does, then you need to either install piping that is corrosion/MIC resistant, treat the water with water addi ves, implement a monitoring plan, or fill your system with nitrogen for dry or preac on systems.

• Dry Pipe: Nitrogen: For dry pipe or preac on systems nitrogen can be used to fill the sprinkler piping network instead of air. When a system is filled with nitrogen it contains very li le oxygen, which is a vital ingredient in the corrosion process. Nitrogen can be provided through cylinders or a nitrogen generator.  How can I Spot Corrosion? Some corrosion can be easily iden fied while others can be hidden. During your annual floor level inspec on of piping, fi ngs and sprinklers be sure to keep an eye out for exterior corrosion which can be iden fied by its orange-brown color and rough texture. Internal corrosion is more difficult to iden fy during your annual inspec on so an assessment of the internal condi on of piping is required to be conducted every five years. Outside of that assessment, the effects of both internal and external corrosion can be seen by looking for water stains or leaking pipe where corrosion could have created pinhole leaks in your system by ea ng through the wall of your piping (see image below).

• Wet Pipe: Air Ven ng: NFPA 13 requires a vent to be located at a high point in the system to allow air to be removed by either a manual or automa c valve. This can be a reasonable approach on wet pipe sprinkler systems to reduce corrosion ac vity. The purpose of the air ven ng valve is to exhaust as much trapped air as possible from a single loca on every me the system is filled, thus having less oxygen for the metal to react with. • Dry Pipe: Drain Water Out of System: Just like how in wet pipe systems you want to remove the air out of the piping, for dry pipe or preac on systems you want to remove the water. Dry pipe and preac on systems are required to be pitched to a low point drain so that water can be removed from the system. Since most corrosion occurs at the air/water interface this will help prevent corrosion. September 2020 - www.safesecuremagazine.com

 What do I do if I See Corrosion? When there is significant corrosion buildup that is detrimental to sprinkler system performance, that sec on of piping, or sprinkler needs to be replaced. If corrosion is bad enough some mes an en re system needs to be replaced. Addressing these issues will help ensure the reliability of your sprinkler system, increase the life expectancy of your system and in the long run save you me, energy, and money. Share your experience working on a system that was installed in a corrosive atmosphere in the comments below. What was the biggest challenge or lesson learned? 41

BEIRUT'S ACCIDENTAL CARGO: How An Unscheduled Port Visit Led To Disaster

and succeeded in having it arrested. Months later, for safety reasons, the ammonium nitrate was unloaded and put in a dock warehouse. That stockpile caught fire and exploded not far from a built-up residen al area of the city. The huge blast killed 145 people, injured 5,000, fla ened buildings and made more than a quarter of a million people homeless. The ship might have succeeded in leaving Beirut, had it managed to load the addi onal cargo.

The chemicals that went up in flames in Beirut's deadliest peaceme explosion arrived in the Lebanese capital seven years ago on a leaky Russian-leased cargo ship that, according to its captain, should never have stopped there. "They were being greedy," said Boris Prokoshev, who was captain of the Rhosus in 2013 when he says the o w n e r t o l d h i m t o m a ke a n unscheduled stop in Lebanon to pick up extra cargo. Prokoshev said the ship was carrying 2,750 tonnes of a highly combus be chemical from Georgia to Mozambique when the order came to divert to Beirut on its way through the Mediterranean. The crew were asked to load some heavy road equipment and take it to 44

Jordan's Port of Aqaba before resuming their journey onto Africa, where the ammonium nitrate was to be delivered to an explosives manufacturer. But the ship was never to leave Beirut, having tried and failed to safely load the addi onal cargo before becoming embroiled in a lengthy legal dispute over port fees. "It was impossible," Prokoshev, 70, told Reuters of the opera on to try and load the extra cargo. "It could have ruined the whole ship and I said no," he said by 'phone from his home in the Russian resort town of Sochi on the Black Sea coast. The captain and lawyers ac ng for some creditors accused the ship's owner of abandoning the vessel

The crew had stacked the equipment, including excavators and roadrollers, on top of the doors to the cargo hold which held the ammonium nitrate below, according to the ship's Russian boatswain, Boris Musinchak. But the hold doors buckled. "The ship was old and the cover of the hold bent," Musinchak said by 'phone. "We decided not to take risks." The captain and three crew spent 11 months on the ship while the legal dispute dragged on, without wages and with only limited supplies of food. Once they le , the ammonium nitrate was unloaded. "The cargo was highly explosive. That's why it was kept on board when we were there. That ammonium nitrate had a very high concentra on," Prokoshev said.

Is Safety a Priority in Your Organization? policy, they are much more likely to follow that policy. Involving your employees doesn't mean that your organiza on has to create safety standards by commi ee, but being open to sugges ons can go a long way to ensuring that employees feel like they have a voice in their crea on. It's much easier to hold high expecta ons in a workplace when it's apparent that those expecta ons have been set by the majority. “When it comes to safety, without employee buy-in employers are likely to see their efforts wasted.”

 Making Safety Part of the Routine in Your Workplace

WHAT YOU CAN DO TO SET A STANDARD FOR SAFETY IN YOUR WORKPLACE? Safety is about more than just policies, equipment, and training. A safe work space should make safety a priority throughout the organiza on. In this ar cle, we'll look crea ng the kind of safety culture that your employees will want to follow.

 Setting Safety Standards For Your Employees The most difficult part of workplace safety is ge ng employees to actually follow the standards set by their employer. Compliance is important, because employers will want to see a return on their investment in safety equipment and safety procedures. When it comes to safety, without employee buy-in employers are likely to see their efforts wasted. To get employee par cipa on, it's important for them to be involved early.

Setting Safety Standards With Your Employees Ge ng employees involved with the crea on of standards and procedures will help to ins ll a sense of commitment. When an employee sees that his or her values are reflected in your safety 48

A lot of people are resistant to change, so it shouldn't be surprising when employees reject new safety procedures. By presen ng safety as part of regular work procedures, employees will feel more open to engage in safe work prac ces. Some of the ways that you can make safety more rou ne in your workplace include: • Place a safety bulle n in a highly visible loca on and keep it current so that employees check it regularly. • Include safety in every mee ng to help improve the reten on of informa on. • Model safety for others in your organiza on to help encourage compliance.

 Making Your Investment in Safety Count Ge ng your employees the resources they need to stay safe in the workplace is only one piece of a larger puzzle. Crea ng a safety culture within your organiza on is important when you want your employees to use the tools that you've given them. By asking for employee input and making safety visible in your workplace, you can create effec ve safety standards that everyone feels invested in. September 2020 - www.visionmediahitech.com

A SAFER REOPENING As many employees begin returning to a more typical work environment, employers must remember to priori ze safety. Here are steps the Na onal Safety Council - based on recommenda ons from its SAFER task force - says employers should take before reopening:  Phasing: Create a phased transi on to return to work aligned with risk and exposure levels.  Sani ze: Disinfect the workplace a n d m a ke a ny a l te ra o n s needed so employees can easily prac ce physical distancing.  Screenings: Develop a health status screening process for all employees.

50

 Hygiene: Create a plan for handling employees who get sick, and encourage good hygiene.  Tracing: If workers get sick, follow proper contact tracing steps to curb the spread of COVID-19.  Mental Health: Commit to suppor ng the mental and e m o o n a l h e a l t h o f yo u r workers by sharing support resources and policies.  Training: Train leaders and supervisors at your organiza on on the fundamentals of safety. These fundamentals include risk assessment and hazard recogni on, as well as the mental and wellness-related impacts of COVID-19. Your employees will

feel the effects of the pandemic long a er it's over.  Engagement Plan: No fy employees in advance of the return to their pre-coronavirus workplace. Consider categorizing workers into different groups based on job roles and bringing back groups or departments one at a me.  C o m m u n i c a o n : C re ate a communica on plan that involves being open and transparent with workers about returning to work.  Assessment: Outline the main factors you're using as guidance to provide a simple structure for the extremely complex returnto-work decision.

Now Is the Time for Schools to Re-Evaluate Safety Plans COVID-19 has challenged schools in a way that none of us have ever experienced before. In order to help tackle this challenge, the Centers for Disease Control and Preven on has released a set of guidelines that schools should follow to safely reopen and operate this fall. As schools make plans to adhere to these guidelines they should think beyond the scope of just COVID-19 and keep their school's overall safety plan front of mind. Many of the CDC's guidelines can be met through the use of technology, and schools should be inves ng in and implemen ng technology solu ons that not only helps them adhere to CDC guidelines this fall, but bolsters their overall school safety now and in the future. One commonality that stands out most in the CDC's guidelines is the need for two-way communica on between staff, parents/caregivers, and students. For instance, the CDC states that schools should "Educate staff and families about when they/their child(ren) should stay home and when they can return to school," and that "staff and families [should] self report to the school if they or their student have symptoms of COVID-19, a posi ve test for COVID-19, or were exposed to someone with COVID-19 within the last 14 days.” One way to achieve this is with a communica on portal. With a communica on portal, schools can provide their staff, students, and parents/caregivers with personal logins to an online portal that contains important informa on and ways to streamline communica on with one another. Emails, text messages, and phone calls are a common way many schools communicate with parents, but a portal allows school administrators to ensure their informa on is always up-to-date because it can be edited in real- me and it's always available to the people that need it, so there's no need to worry about a missed phone call or email. Not only is a communica on portal going to be helpful for adhering to many of the CDC's guidelines, but it will help communicate far beyond COVID-19.

The C D C also recommends that "If feasible, conduct daily health checks (e.g., temperature screening and/or or symptom checking) of staff and students." This can be a difficult task, especially for schools with higher popula ons, if done manually. Instead, with thermal imaging technology schools can monitor their students and staff for irregular temperatures throughout the en re day. This is far more effec ve in both saving me as well as spo ng people who may poten ally be sick. If a student comes into school and has their temperature checked just once, they can s ll develop a fever over the course of the hours-long school day. However, thermal imaging will monitor everyone throughout the en re day, so even if a student or staff member develops a fever or higher temperature later on, it can s ll be addressed.

A communica on portal can also offer other func ons such as video conferencing and e-learning. Both of these will be very important in maintaining social distancing and other guidelines, such as, "Offer op ons for students at higher risk of severe illness that limit their exposure risk (e.g., virtual learning opportuni es)" and, "Pursue virtual group events, gatherings, or mee ngs, if possible." Parents are going to be discouraged from entering the school as much as possible, so video conferencing is a great way that parents can con nue to meet with teachers face to face. This is going to be important for conduc ng parent-teacher conferences and even conduc ng staff mee ngs. A communica on portal with video conferencing also allows students the ability to access school work and learn from home if needed, which will be important in ensuring that no kid is le behind.

Although thermal imaging is useful, it should be treated as part of a larger solu on and not be implemented as a quick fix. Alone, thermal imaging will only create a log or record of when elevated temperatures are detected, but what's actually important is ac ng quickly on that informa on to limit the possibility of spread. When thermal imaging technology is combined with an aler ng pla orm, staff can immediately receive an alert when an elevated

temperature is detected rather than digging through records a er the fact. With this informa on in their hands, staff can isolate the individual and conduct further screening to determine whether it's safe for that person to remain in the school. These alerts can be even more detailed if schools also implement facial recogni on, which is o en as simple as equipping their current camera system with addi onal so ware. With facial recogni on, these alerts can tell staff which specific person has been detected with an elevated temperature to speed up the iden fica on process even more.

The advantages of an aler ng pla orm and facial recogni on go far beyond the circumstances of COVID-19. An aler ng pla orm can e all of a school's disparate systems together, such as the fire systems, door access control, environmental monitoring, etc., to create a more connected, holis c, and effec ve safety solu on. And facial recogni on can be used to enhance access control and monitor who should and should not be in the building. This can be useful in permi ng access to approved groups of people, such as students and staff, while making it harder for intruders to enter the building and quickly spo ng them if they do. The CDC has also pushed the importance of proper hygiene and safety measures such as the need to "Discourage sharing of items that are difficult to clean or disinfect." One of the first things that comes to mind is the use of physical hall passes. Instead schools should consider using an a endance and virtual pass applica on. This allows staff to mark a student as being "out of classroom" on the applica on. On the applica on, any other staff members can see that the student has permission to be in the halls and when the student returns to class their teacher can check them back in. Not only does this decrease the need for shared items, but it can help improve overall school safety now and going forward. For instance, if the school needed to evacuate or go into lockdown while students are out in the halls, they can join another classroom or staff member who can mark them as accounted for. This allows students to be easily found during emergency and high-stress situa ons. Whether opera ng during COVID-19 or not, student and staff safety should always be a school's top priority. This is why being aware of how the technology schools are implemen ng now will be useful not just to meet the CDC's guidelines, but to expand and improve the schools' overall safety infrastructure and protocol is impera ve.
