With the onset of the festive season with Durga Puja, Dussehra, Diwali, many people have made plans to catch up with their friends and family. However, it is important to note that the pandemic is still not over and one needs to adhere to social distancing norms and follow hygiene protocols to stay safe. In fact, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also made an earnest appeal to citizens to follow precautionary measures. Union Health Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan also requested people to stay away from large congregations. No religion or God says that you have to celebrate in an ostentatious way, there is no need to congregate in large numbers to prove your faith. However, if you still do plan to go out, here’s what you need to know to reduce your risk of any disease, including coronavirus. Crowded places should be avoided; festivals should be celebrated with all precautions. Meet people in open areas and maintain required distancing; wearing a mask is a must once you step out of the house. Even if you get stuck in a crowd by chance, make sure you are wearing a mask and avoiding face-to-face contact. Consult a doctor without delay if you notice any symptoms. Experts suggest that those with respiratory complaints or a “weakened immune system” must refrain from venturing out at any cost. “This year, it is not normal. So, adhere to the ‘new normal’. We can’t become complacent and should not let our guard down till vacination drive is completed. With winters, pollution and smog coming up combined with the festival season, we should be more cautious. Psychologically, festivals will provide the much needed confidence to people. Industry and economy is coming back on track. Markets providing many lucrative offers and Covid-19 cases going down daily is ideal situation to provide psychological relief to people. Many have already stopped using masks and washing hands. But, this is risky. The festive season might be the biggest challenge yet. By remaining mindful of the highly infectious nature of coronavirus, we can still enjoy the things we love about the festivals.

October 2021

Celebrations should be done but with COVID-pertinent behavior. It is time to prioritize the safety and well-being of every individual. Get the vaccination done at the earliest. Your health has to be the priority everything else can wait.

Stay Safe! Stay Healthy! Wishing you a joyous festive season and a most prosperous and healthy New Year. May your festivals sparkle with moments of love, laughter, and goodwill, and may the year ahead be full of contentment and joy.

Importance of Gas Leak Detection System in Commercial/Industrial Kitchen Going to your favorite restaurant/hotel for a date, party with friends, or a family dinner-sounds good, but what if the place that you are hanging out is not Fire Compliant, as most of the hotels are always dotted with fire hazards at every corner. They have parking spaces, cooking oils, electrical connections, and paper products. One small spark can turn a great evening into a disaster. Fire will not only cause material damage but will cost lives, just because the owner of the restaurant was not aware of the hazards or didn't care about safety.

Frequently asked questions by our clients & potential customers/users:

“Safety isn't Expensive, it's Priceless” Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) and Piped Natural Gas (PNG) possess a constant risk to the chefs, managers, servers & the staff. Studies say 87% of the restaurants/eateries do not comply with the fire standards & regulations. Our Mission at Ambetronics Engineers Pvt. Ltd. is to provide the best quality and the optimum solution that is needed for the Human and Industrial Safety. We have designed a state of the art solution to tackle such hazards and prevent fire disaster. The solution consists of three major components: 1. LPG/PNG/CNG Gas Leak Detector 2. Gas Monitor (IoT Based Gateway) 3. Alarming System (Audio & Visual Alarm) 12

Q. What is the Gas Sensor used in Ambetronics Gas Detectors? Answer: We use Pellistor/Catalytic Bead Sensor that is capable of detecting the concentration of LPG/PNG Gases in 0–100%LEL range having a resolution of 1 and an accuracy of plus-minus 2% of Full Scale.

Q. Where will the Gas Detector be Located? Answer: LPG is heavier than air, hence it settles on the ground level. Therefore, we need to install it 6 inches or 1 foot from above the ground. October 2021 - www.visionmediahitech.com

Whereas PNG is lighter than air, so it would escape higher to the ceiling. Therefore, we install the detector one foot above the pipeline.

Q. Do you have PESO Approval for the following LPG, PNG, CNG, or LNG Detectors? Answer: Yes, we are approved and have a PESO Certificate, which is a must for all the restaurants/cafes/hotels, LPG Banks, LPG Bullet Yards.

Industries that Need to Install Fire Alarms on Priority

1. Hospitals - Hospital is one such place where fire safety needs to be treated as the number one priority. Not only because it has patients to be taken care of and thus evacuating the space can take more time. But for the primary reason being the medicines and medical instruments present in the hospital that are highly inflammable. Installing a conventional fire alarm control panel and regularly maintaining it can avoid the fire hazards and harm to life in the hospital. 2. Shopping Malls - Shopping Malls are usually crammed with people. With various types of stocks, lights and gadgets, fire safety becomes a significant concern in shopping malls. Apart from installing fire extinguishers on each floor, making fire exits and carrying mock drills for fighting against fire, it is essential to install a system sensor conventional smoke detector. This will help to detect smoke and give enough time to evacuate the space without causing any ruckus.

Fire safety will always remain to be a significant concern for different occupancies. Every day there are reports of fire accidents occurring across the country. With vivaciously growing constructions in India, especially that of skyscrapers, it has become mandatory to set fire safety laws. The fire safety norms are different for commercial premises than that of residential premises. The rapidly growing commercial areas and fire accidents taking place has urged major industrial complexes to install a fire security system. Amongst all there are a few commercial complexes that need specialised fire safety systems pertaining to the type of industry. In case of fire accidents taking place, the investigation following it highlights issues such as inadequate precautionary measures, non-compliant construction, negligence towards flammable material, etc. A sound quality fire safety system and time-to-time inspection can deter the fire accidents caused due to these drawbacks. In order to avoid such mishaps, there are specific laws in India for fire safety and governance. One such important law is the National Building Code of India (NBC). This law was made in 2016 and is titled as Fire and Life Safety - it covers the prevention of fire and ensures the safety of life. The code also includes guidelines for choosing the right type of fire safety system based on the building's requirements. Fire safety systems are now mandatory for all the major industries in India. Some of the industries that require fire safety system on priority are mentioned below. 16

3. Hotels - One of the major factors a customer wants to ensure after checking in a hotel is the security system. There are many reasons due to which hotels are more prone to fire accidents out of which the primary reason is kitchen area activities. Installing a conventional heat detector system sensor can help you protect your premises against fire hazards. 4. Theatres - Any place that has a large number of people gathered needs proper security against fire. It is the responsibility of the theatre owner to ensure the safety of people who visit the theatre while present in the theatre premises. It is suggested to run a risk assessment in the theatre premises and then select a system sensor conventional heat detector that fits your requirements and place accordingly. 5. Educational Institutes - Importance of fire safety is often neglected in educational institutions. With multiple classrooms having combustible materials like furniture and labs and a large number of students, fire safety must be the priority concern. Conventional heat detector system sensor and conventional fire alarm panel can ensure complete security against fire mishaps. It is the fundamental responsibility of educational institutions and parents to make sure that the fire safety system is in place to avoid any type of fire accident taking place. Which Buildings Require A Fire Suppression System and When? quantity of grease that makes water a potentially dangerous liquid to use as a suppression agent. Similarly, some other buildings with sensitive equipment like data centers should use fire suppression systems. Therefore, such kinds of buildings need more effective extinguishers like suppression systems that consist of several fire protection components including, detectors, alarms, and suppression agents. After all, sensitive electronic equipment, priceless archives, and delicate paper documents could be damaged just as badly by water, plus spraying water on some types of fires is highly ineffective and only encourages them to spread. Fire Suppression Systems Caters to the following list of industries: Here are some specific industries that need a fire suppression system, especially when water isn’t a suitable extinguishing agent for the types of fires that could ignite in your building. It’s necessary to have the proper extinguishing equipment at the ready when it comes to protecting your life and property from fire. In this case, Fire Suppression System plays a crucial role in preventing a fire from affecting costly damages to your building and averting injury or even death of residents or employees by allowing them proper time to leave the building after a fire is detected. Automatic fire suppression is the most suitable option for safeguarding your assets such as sensitive electronic equipment, priceless archives, and delicate paper documents and due to this, it is the best choice for ordinary office buildings, retail stores, and similar commercial properties. A fire suppression system uses dry chemicals, gases, wet chemicals, liquids, or foam to suppress fires while it is used in minimizing property damage, and downtime for your business. Now the question is, What types of Buildings require Fire Suppression Systems? These are used in buildings, like industrial plants storing hazardous chemicals, where a sprinkler system doesn't work effectively. Apart from this, kitchens of any building should have suppression systems because of the high 18

Mobile Video Surveillance Cameras Act as a Visual Deterrent and Allow for the Investigation of Criminal Activities They are utilized at construction job sites, parking lots, businesses and for a range of remote site security applications such is their proven effectiveness.

Typically, these alarms are generated via Video Analytics - intelligent rule based surveillance algorithms built into security cameras that detect movement on your sites

• Cost-Effective: Security cameras, even when backed by remote monitoring, are up to 80% cheaper than the cost of a security guard • No Compromise: Cheaper doesn't mean less effective. A monitored security camera is always awake, always on guard and can spot criminals even in total darkness • Evidence and Investigation: A professional security camera operator can track every move a criminal makes, gathering critical evidence that will assist with Law Enforcement investigations • Reporting and Analysis: An ISOC will be able to provide you with a customized report of any incidents that take place at your locations, and give details on what action was taken • Alarms, Sirens and Audio Voice-Down Activation: If an intrusion is detected at your site, a remote operator can activate the inbuilt blue lights, siren and voice-down systems surveillance camera. These are a proven deterrent to any potential criminal activity • Fewer False Alarms: Having your security cameras monitored by professionals means they can detect things on site that may trigger false alarms, and they can also filter these out completely for you • Expertise: Partner ISOC is managed by a team of ex-military, police and law enforcement professionals who provide 24/7/365 vigilance when it comes to protecting your sites • Convenience: Rather than worry about late night call outs, reviewing your sites over the weekends and holidays - why not leave it to the experts and have complete peace of mind that your sites and properties are in the best hands?

The Key Benefits of Remote Monitoring • Crime Prevention: Alarm monitoring allows potential threats to your sites, businesses or property to be spotted in real-time and addressed • Caught Red-handed: If criminal activity is detected by your security cameras, the ISOC can raise an alert to Law Enforcement or security patrols who can respond to site and catch the offenders in the act

Who Should Use Remotely Monitored Surveillance Cameras? In our experience the key applications for remotely monitored security cameras include: • Construction site security • Parking lot security • Oil and Gas facility security • Major public events

But when surveillance cameras are backed by professional video monitoring services, a camera becomes a virtual security guard - always awake, always on guard and always protecting your sites. Mobile video surveillance cameras, explores the numerous benefits of remote video monitoring below. Benefits and Advantages of Remote Video Monitoring Before we detail the specific benefits, let's first explain what remote monitoring actually means - and how it occurs. Mobile Video Surveillance Cameras deliver live and recorded video via 4G LTE. The video can be accessed at any time, from anywhere with any connected device. For professional remote monitoring purposes, the video stream is sent directly to an Interactive Surveillance Operations Center (ISOC) where a security professional will receive an alarm or alert from your site, immediately review the footage to verify the alarm and then take appropriate action.

Before Buying Intrusion Alarm System By Arindam Bhadra

This is a short note on Intrusion or Burglar Alarm System. A burglar alarm system is not something you shop for regularly. That's because it's an important purchase for your business that is meant to last - so make sure you have the best. While you can always upgrade as new technology is released, you still need to trust that your alarm system will work when it needs to.

and avoid settling for a type of connection that is not already configured at your facility.

Question #3: How Much? The most important question to ask is the cost associated with the total installation. Some companies offer incentives like free installation while others may offer discounts on monthly subscriptions. Since there are so many types of commercial alarm systems available on the market, that suits your needs and your budget; just because a provider promises you the best, doesn't mean and could be more effective doesn't mean you necessarily need it.

In terms of cost, a high-quality alarm system can be expensive but it is an investment that provides peace of mind. The system charges are generally separate from the monthly subscription costs besides the installation fees. While there is a lot to learn about alarm systems, it's important to first learn which one would be the best fit for your home by reaching out to the professionals and asking the right questions. Here are three questions you need to ask before deciding on which home alarm system is right for your home or your small offices:

Question #1: Accreditation? The first question you should ask is to make sure that the company has the required accreditations to perform the service. There are a lot of companies who claim they have all the required levels of accreditations, but that might not be true. If they are able to produce some level of documentation that could authenticate that, it can't get much better than that.

Question #2: Type of System? The second question to ask is the type of system that is best for your business. Some homes are configured for both wired and wireless security systems while some are not. Hence, you need to be sure about it 28

Question #4: Installation by Whom? This is another most important questing to ask installation, testing & training of system that is best for your business. Both wired and wireless security systems recommended to involve certified installer. Non-certified experienced person may share password and backdoor entry details with hacker and connection that is not already configured correctly as per your needs. Hopefully, this post has provided you with the information you can use to determine if you going to install. If you're not sure, SSA Integrate can help. We have Texecom Certified (Level 3) Intrusion experts that can help you determine the best solution to meet your security needs while keeping you compliant with all the relevant codes. Video Security in SME Market is Getting More Intelligent and Connected Submitted by Hikvision India Small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) may not be as large as companies in the enterprise market, but they are equally important in contributing revenue to the economy. According to World Bank, formal SMEs contribute up to 40% of national income (GDP) in emerging economies. They represent about 90% of businesses and more than 50% of employment worldwide. SMEs grapple with tight budgets, fewer administrative resources, and lack of in-house IT talent, particularly in the face of the unique challenges brought on by the pandemic. However, in truth, with the technology being matured and more products available in the marketplace resulting in cost reductions, the security goals of SMEs are evolving and getting more advanced.

Gaining a Proactive Approach with AI Security installers around the world have been asked for optimal solutions that can help SMEs balance budget and security needs. With a lack of administrative resources, it is less likely for SME customers to have dedicated security personnel to look after daily security operation and management. Sometimes when a security breach occurs and loss suffered, there could be a gap in security for a

considerable amount of time until they have noticed it. Today, technology has taken video intelligence to the next level with increased accuracy and performance, thanks to AI development and Deep Learning algorithms. There are many industries and markets where AI already is making an impact in significant ways, including SMEs who used to be faced with thousands of recorded videos finding evidence of an event. Now, they can enjoy real-time and accurate alerts with fewer distractions. They also gain a proactive approach by identifying potential hazards before they happen. And all this at only a small incremental cost to their business. One example is use of Hikvision's security devices with AcuSense technology powered by AI. AcuSense works to distinguish between human, vehicle and other objects using its smart algorithms. This means it can filter out security alerts associated with human (and/or vehicle) only triggered those for further attention and action. This greatly helps SME customers save on the overall labor cost that could otherwise be used for business improvement.

Seeing with Clarity and Color Video systems have embraced the evolution of resolution for some time - from 480 pixels, 720 1

pixels, to 1080 pixels and now 4K. People want to see more and see more detail when they are needed. For SME customers, this is not an area they would risk compromising in a security system. Why? Imagine if they found a video clip containing key evidence of an event, but the video images were grainy and unclear. This would make it difficult to see a face, or to distinguish the color of clothing or of an automobile. All efforts would be in vain. Research shows that color is important to aid clarity, improving object recognition. It also shows us that in the CCTV world, there is a 'strong correlation' between camera performance and color fidelity. The ability to see detail and color in the dark is one of the most important aspects of a security camera and there are many technical factors that influence this ability. For example, the sensitivity of the image sensor, the lens aperture, and applied image processing. Today's new technologies have empowered modern video cameras to see better in any light and in high resolution. Hikvision's security cameras with its signature ColorVu technology are a great example of this. They guarantee video with colorful details even in extremely dark scenarios. A next-generation series of the cameras goes even further, using 4K Ultra high definition (UHD) to deliver crisp images that provide richer detail.

Checking in Remotely and Respond Promptly The enhanced ease of connectivity and scalable bandwidth made possible by Cloud technology is stimulating more companies, including SMEs, to connect a lot more video security cameras to their networks. Having all the security systems and data tucked away in an IT closet is no longer in the best interests of many SMEs. Push notifications, remote viewing of video, and cloud services are now mainstream for SME customers and their security solutions must support these capabilities. Among others, Hikvision's Hik-Connect app offers seamless connection with all its security devices, allowing SME customers to view real-time videos, playback, and receive event notifications remotely wherever they are. October 2021 - www.safesecuremagazine.com

This means they can monitor remotely, or even open a door with audio communication for example. This really saves SME customers some time as they go about their busy day.

Looking to the Future Beyond security and monitoring use cases, SME companies are taking advantage of a raft of new technologies like AI, cloud service, technological convergence to undertake a range of tasks. Whether it is by utilizing a proactive security approach to look after their people and assets, or by upgrading their standard security system to high definition to look clearer and act precisely. Or expanding the system with audio, intercom and access control to automate processes. Or keeping a watchful eye on their day-to-day business operations remotely. All in all, they are quick to seize on the possibilities offered by today's next-generation video systems to maximize return on investment (ROI) with the lowest cost of ownership. With international organizations such as the World Bank lending more services and improving their access to finance, SMEs will continue to grow and embrace more possibilities. 2

AI Security for Homeowners and SMEs has Arrived…with AcuSense from Hikvision

Submitted by Hikvision India For the very first time, AcuSense technology from Hikvision is bringing the power of AI security to homeowners and SMEs. That means customers in this important market can now boost their security and respond to incidents faster, while also saving time and reducing their workloads and costs,” says Kevin You, Product Management Director at Hikvision. Most technology innovations are a continuation of what's come before. This results in products that are smarter, more efficient, or more cost-effective, but basically just a marginal improvement on the previous version. And then there are technologies that change the game. Technologies like AcuSense from Hikvision.

A major step-change in home and business security 32

By making AI security features available to homeowners and SME organizations for the first time, AcuSense technology is powering more effective security, more efficiency, and faster ROI for customers in these important markets. Here are 3 key ways that AcuSense technology is revolutionizing security for residential and SME customers: 1) AcuSense technology supports faster, more effective responses to security incidents With traditional CCTV solutions, end users may not even know an incident has occurred until after the event – when damages and losses have already been incurred. AcuSense changes this with real-time alarms triggered to end users' mobile devices – allowing them to respond in real time to minimize the negative impacts of a ecurity breach. October 2021 - www.visionmediahitech.com

As an additional benefit, certain AcuSense-enabled camera models offer built-in sound and strobe alarms to startle intruders when they enter restricted areas, stopping them in their tracks. This helps to prevent break-ins in the first place, further protecting people and assets.

dramatically improve home and business security, the technology is fast and easy to deploy in a range of settings – from residences to factories, warehouses, and other restricted areas. In fact, Hikvision cameras, NVRs and DVRs with AcuSense technology are almost as simple to deploy as regular CCTV cameras and use similar mounting and configuration processes. In part, installation is so easy because the Motion Detection 2.0 function of AcuSense-enabled cameras and DVRs is turned on by default. This means that accurate human and vehicle detection is possible with no configuration necessary. Finally, but equally importantly, residential and SME customers can deploy AcuSenseenabled NVRs to their existing camera estates to take advantage of new, AI-powered security features. This means that they can still boost their security provision with AcuSense, while also extending ROI on their existing camera investments.

2) AcuSense technology delivers major time and cost savings for homeowners and businesses Another way AcuSense revolutionizes home and business security is by differentiating between humans and vehicles, and other moving objects such as animals, falling leaves, or heavy rain. This minimizes false positives and ensures that end users are only alerted in the event of real security threats. With AcuSense technology, homeowners, SME security teams, and alarm-receiving centers can also find footage of security incidents extremely quickly and easily, with no need to review video manually. This is achieved with 'tags' added to the video timeline every time a person or vehicle appears in the camera view – which eliminates the need for timeconsuming, expensive, manual video searches. 3) AcuSense technology is fast and simple to deploy, delivering a truly easy upgrade path to AI Although AcuSense offers security features that October 2021 - www.safesecuremagazine.com

Hackers are Laying Siege to Critical Infrastructure:

Here's How to Fight Back are so high that the victims often pay the ransom to maintain service continuity. The Colonial Pipeline ransomware attack in the US that took down the largest fuel pipeline temporarily in the country caused fuel shortages up and down the East Coast. The company admitted paying the hackers nearly $5 million in ransom just a day after discovering malware on its systems.

Mr. Nikhil Korgaonkar, Regional Director, Arcserve India & SAARC Critical Infrastructure is vital for the proper functioning of our society and economy. It is almost impossible to imagine life without a robust network of hospitals, airports, power utilities, and schools. While many people may take these services for granted, you can be sure that cyber attackers understand how dependent we are on them. Critical infrastructure is vulnerable precisely because it is so important. These essential services can significantly disrupt public life when shut down for even a day or two. The bad guys know there is a lot at stake if they disrupt these systems. They know they have a solid chance to make a quick profit because the costs and labor associated with manually recovering from ransomware 36

Back in India, the Stuxnet virus targeted Indian servers, infecting between 10,000 to 80,000 Computers. Though there were no reports of any significant disruption, this did make India the third largest victim of the Stuxnet, after Iran and Indonesia. In another major incident, a malware attack in September 2019 on Kudankulam nuclear reactor in Tamil Nadu breached its administrative network. The malware was reportedly custom-designed, signifying that it was a deliberate hack. Most recently, a hacker group RedEcho targeted India's power sector, ports and parts of the railway infrastructure. This attack on the power sector can be blamed for a massive power outage in Mumbai in October 2020.

 A Problem that is Getting Worse The reality is that critical infrastructure, operated by federal, state, and local agencies, is getting hit by increasingly frequent ransomware attacks. Data from India's Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT) and National Critical Infrastructure Protection Centre (NCIIPC), the two government bodies which keep an eye on malicious cyber activities, have noted several attacks on India's critical infrastructure. These attacks have only increased in scale and frequency over the year making critical infrastructure protection a major cybersecurity priority for India. And it is safe to say we can expect more of the same. Why? Because while ransomware has evolved and attacks have accelerated, spending on critical infrastructure modernization has failed to keep pace. The public sector broadly relies on tried-and-true technologies that worked in the past but are getting long in the tooth. Indeed, many agencies continue to use outdated hardware, software, and networks vulnerable to today's persistent threats. Add to this the rapid shift to virtual operations in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Organizations create, share, and access data from remote locations on less secure networks, and hackers have pounced. Bitdefender reports that ransomware attacks jumped an eye-watering 485% in 2020, and many of the targets are in the public sector. October 2021 - www.visionmediahitech.com

There is even a new trend called Ransomware-as-aService (RaaS). This subscription-based model enables virtually anyone to use already-developed ransomware tools to launch attacks. The developers of the malware line their pockets by taking a percentage of each ransom payment received. Overall, the cybercrime problem is now immense, with damages totaling $6 trillion a year, notes Cybercrime magazine. Put all the cybercriminals in one place and make them a nation, and they would have the world's third-largest economy, after the U.S. and China.

 3-2-1-1 Data-Protection Provides Defense All government agencies must improve their efforts to identify, deter, protect against, detect, and respond to these actions and actors. So, what can the public sector do to defend itself and our critical infrastructure? One of the first steps it should take is to adopt the 3-2-1-1 data-protection strategy. The 3-2-1-1 strategy states that you have three backup copies of your data on two different media, such as disk and tape, with 1 of those copies located offsite for disaster recovery. The final one in this equation is immutable object storage. Immutable object storage safeguards information continuously by taking snapshots of it every 90 seconds. Even if disaster strikes, you can quickly recover your data. Immutable snapshots are read-only versions of metadata for data and files. These snapshots provide point-in-time data recovery. Snapshots enable you to roll back to a previous file state in downtime, natural disaster, or ransomware attack. Immutable snapshots cannot be altered, overwritten, or deleted, so they safeguard data integrity from loss due to human error, hardware failure, or ransomware attack. With immutable snapshots, schools could better safeguard student, faculty, and business records and protect data from accidental deletion or cyber theft. Healthcare organizations, for their part, could ensure the smooth and uninterrupted delivery of services and operations-even during a disaster or ransomware attack. Critical Infrastructure can be kept up and running with the right cybersecurity strategy and ultimately withstand the worst that cybercriminals can throw at it. Data Center Security

Mr. Samrendra Mohan Kumar MD, MitKat Advisory.

 General Data is the new oil; Data Centers (DCs) its reservoirs. India is witnessing unprecedented interest and investment in DCs. A modern Data Center (DC) is much more than a warehouse with racks, servers, storage, switches, routers, and applications - it's truly a business-enabler and technological marvel designed with security best practices in mind. Trust and security are fundamental pillars of a DC business. With the rising importance of data to the national economy, and accompanying proliferation of threats, there has been urgency on the part of political and business leaders to secure data, DCs and digital assets. Nations are enacting laws on data sovereignty, privacy, and security. Digital transformation and cyber security have moved up on the agenda of business leaders. DC security managers are busy adopting zero-trust frameworks in a perimeter-less, low-trust world. 38

The DC eco-system is rapidly evolving. In India, there is no comprehensive federal regulation or regulator to govern the DC eco-system. Individual states (UP, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and others) are bringing in new legislations and/or tweaking some old ones to make them businessfriendly.

 DC Eco-System: Rapid Growth across APAC and India Asia-pacific (APAC) has become the world's fastest growing region for DCs. Key destinations are Singapore, Hong Kong, Mumbai, Sydney, Seoul, and Tokyo. Growth markets include Hanoi, Bangkok, Shanghai, Kuala Lampur and Jakarta. Investment in Indian DC market is likely to increase to $8 bn and across APAC to $26 bn by 2026. Indian market is currently witnessing significant attention and investment - not only from Microsoft, Amazon, Goggle and Alibaba, but also from colocation service providers. Global and regional majors (usually through joint ventures with local partners) - Equinix (with GPX), Digital Realty (with Brookfield), NTT (Netmagic), ST Telemedia, CapitaLand, Princeton Digital Group (PDG), Colt, EdgeConnex (with Adani) and Web Werks are now active in India. Jio, CtrlS, Sify, Nxtra, Next Gen Infinite, Bridge, Pi and Mantra Data Centers, Yondr, Yotta, and Iron Mountain DC are ramping up. Mumbai is the fastest growing market in APAC. Low risk of earthquakes, good power situation and basic infrastructure, high submarine cable deployments that connect to key markets across the region and the world, city's reputation for its work culture and as the financial hub, October 2021 - www.visionmediahitech.com

make Mumbai a very attractive destination. Chennai. Bengaluru, Delhi National Capital Region (NCR, including Gurgaon & Noida), Hyderabad and Pune are the other markets of opportunity. Edge DCs are planned in Tier 2 and 3 cities as well. Government and private enterprises are building their own DCs. The eco-system also comprises PMCs and EPCs, TVRA, ESA and other Consultants OEMs, SIs and real estate players, infra and service providers. Each of these is benefitting from the DC boom and scaling up.

 DC Security as a BusinessEnabler Security is integral to our lives. We want to send our children to schools which are safe. Cities and residential societies with reputation for good security command a premium. Hotel chains perceived to be secure report better occupancies. Investments in defence of a nation spins off into commercial success, technological prowess, and economic prosperity. Security is a critical element of DC design. protect their company's techno-infra backbone, they want definite assurances on security and resiliency. Intensifying threat environment (geo-political, socio-economic, environmental, technological, regulatory, health and safety issues, criminals and IP thieves, non-state actors, sometimes supported by states, malicious and ignorant insiders etc), regulations (data localization, privacy and security) and service level agreements (SLAs) with customers (uptime, availability, security and business continuity) necessitate that security be built into the design of DCs, and not be bolted on as an afterthought. Security is most economical and effective, if incorporated at the planning and design stage itself. Customer Security teams come with exhaustive check lists - compliances, adherence to best practices, threat-vulnerability-risk assessment (TVRA) and environmental sustainability assessment (ESA Phase I and II), multi-layered security, surveillance, access control, redundancies, access-lists, zero-trustframeworks, business continuity planning and disaster recovery (BCP-DR) measures, whether security policies and SOPs have been defined, documented, implemented, rehearsed/tested and are being sustained, skilled, background checked professionals, and well-functioning 24x7 security command centers. 39

Customers want integrated and gap-free security - IT security, information security, physical and environmental security, OT security and IoT security. They want compliances - be it ISO IEC 20000 -1 or SSAE certification or SOC certification and compliance with all the national regulations.

A good security posture once obtained must be sustained through audits/assessments, training, operations and maintenance (O&M), and be supported by budgetary allocations.

 The Nuts and Bolts of DC Security DCs must be well-located and secure against potential physical and electronic threats. They must be located far from areas frequented by natural disasters, and potential causes of other disasters such as airports and chemicals. Customers want stable political climate, minimal local issues, robust perimeter surveillance, single entry/exists, secure access to DCs, good identity and access management, network, application and data security, and adequate redundancies (of power, batteries, HVAC, water, power and telecom). DCs must have a comprehensive, multi-layered security so that a potential intruder should be forced to breach several layers of security before reaching the crown jewels in the server room. Access lists, exit procedures (and removal of privileges when no longer required or mandated) and zero-trust frameworks are important to prevent theft or unauthorized access. DCs have comprehensive surveillance arrangements - Pan-Tilt-Zoom (PTZ) cameras usually monitor external access points, interior doors and data floors. Defined and documented policies govern the retention of camera feed backups and its archival offsite. BCP-DR measures are of vital importance. Customers want to be reassured about back-up sites, equipment, and personnel in case of failure of primary locations (redundancy in internet access and alternative cloud hosting). They want to see welltrained, skilled, fit-for-purpose, background-verified security professionals implementing well thought-out, clearly defined and documented policies and processes in business as usual (BAU) as well as crises situations. How much to invest in security is always a tricky question. The investors, the developer, the operator, the customer, other stakeholders - everyone wants to be reassured that while security is foolproof, the return on investment (RoI) in it is justified. DC security professionals have an important duty to understand the business imperatives, on ground realities, security requirements and communicate well with the stakeholders to justify the RoI in security. Security leaders must always remember that security exists to support the business this cardinal principle must govern development of all security frameworks, policies, and SOPs. 40

 Conclusion DCs should be designed, built, and operated with high availability and efficiency in mind; they should also be highly secure from internal and external threats - both natural and man -made. Security and Resiliency is not only a differentiator in the eyes of the customer; it is truly a business-enabler and business transformer. In sum, trust and security are fundamental to building and sustaining a great DC business and brand and merit the highest attention. October 2021 - www.visionmediahitech.com

EOL Resistor Not a Termination Resistor By Arindam Bhadra

Early security systems used simple electrical circuits to monitor the status of doors and windows. The circuit was either closed or open, and therefore returned full voltage or no voltage at all to the control panel; that was all the system wanted or needed to know. Although such circuits are still in use today, the digital age gave manufacturers the opportunity to make systems more secure. A resistor is a small semiconductor which resists the flow of electrical current. The current is permitted to flow, but is reduced by the value of the resistor. If a resistor is connected, in series, with a sensor on an alarm circuit, then the control panel no longer sees full voltage across the circuit, but rather a reduced voltage, when the circuit is closed. Now there are three possible conditions for the control to measure: full open-circuit voltage (if the circuit is open), reduced voltage (if the circuit is closed and secure), and no voltage if the wiring has been compromised. For if the two sides of the circuit are making contact at some point between the control and the resistor, the current has a shortcut back to the control, thus bypassing the resistor. The control will see this no voltage (or very low voltage) as a fault and will alert the user.

In fire alarm and security systems, at the end of the input circuit (Initiating Line Circuit or IDC), and at the end of the output circuit (Notification Appliance Circuit or NAC), there's an End-of-Line Resistor. Both the Terminating Resistor and the End-of-Line Resistor (EOL) are across the conductors at the end of the circuit. The difference between the two types of resistor, though, is not where they're at or even what they're made out of. They're both at the end of the line, and both across the conductors. They can even come out of the same package from the store or distributor. The difference between the two is why they're installed at the end of the line. 42

 Terminating Resistor In signal carrying systems, especially between equipment like between the TV camera and the video recorder (Closed Circuit TV or CCTV), or an RF amplifier for a Master Antenna TV (MATV) system and the TV set, there's a Terminating Resistor. On a Video Input, inside the DVR (Digital Video Recorder or Security Recorder) there's a Terminating Resistor. With Master Antenna TV (MATV), the Terminating Resistor is at the last "tap" when several taps are used in a single line from the amplifier. When the TV set is at the end of the line for the MATV system, inside the TV set there's a Terminating Resistor. For a true RS485 communication control circuit, there's Terminating Resistors at each end of the daisy-chain.

 Purpose of the Terminating Resistor A Terminating Resistor is a Signal Quality component. It is used to soak up an AC signal, preventing reflections or ghosts on the line. It takes time for signals to travel along wire, and the energy of the signal cannot be created or destroyed; it has to go somewhere. At the end of the line where the wires end, if the wire is just cut off, the signal hits the end of the line and bounces straight back. If the wires at the end are shorted together to prevent the bouncing straight back, the signal takes a U-turn and returns in reverse voltage. Because of the time it takes for the signal to travel to the end of the wire and back, the bounced back signal is an extra, unwanted signal on the line. It degrades the video or control signals, or if the wire is long enough even returns as an extra erroneous video or control signal. The value of the Terminating Resistor is chosen very carefully to be able to soak up this signal when it reaches the end of the line so the signal doesn't bounce back. Tech-Updates Without termination resistors

As opposed to the terminating resistor, which is there to prevent signal reflections, the End-of-Line Resistor is a Life-Safety and Property Protection component. It's important to understand that the "signals" used in fire alarm systems are DC, either on or off, not AC, which carries information like video or data.

Node 2

Because there's no AC, there are no reflections from the end of the loop; the End-of-Line Resistor is used to pass DC current.

With termination resistors

The End-of-Line Resistor used in fire alarm systems and security systems may look the same as a Terminating Resistor, however the function of the End-ofLine Resistor is completely different. The "End-of-Line Resistor" confirms that the wiring in a building remains undamaged. It's across the end of all the wire in each pair of wires (loop) for all inputs (Initiating Device Circuit or IDC) and outputs (Notification Appliance Circuit or NAC).

Finally, Ludhiana Fire Department Gets New Tenders, Gadget Upgraded The Modernised Fire Brigade now has Thermal Imaging Cameras, Life Detectors, Inflatable Lighting Towers, Battery Operated Cutters, and Aluminium Fire Safety Suits Among Other Hi-Tech Gadgets in its Arsenal; Four New Mini Tenders have also been Procured. under the Smart City Mission to the fire brigade at its headquarters near the railway station.

Firefighters in Ludhiana have been having a tough time dousing flames without proper fire safety equipment and outdated gadgets. After a long wait, the underequipped fire department in the industrial hub has been contemporised and stocked with hi-tech gadgets and four new fire tenders, which will help minimise destruction and streamline rescue operations. The modernised fire brigade now has thermal imaging cameras, life detectors, inflatable lighting towers, battery operated cutters, and aluminium fire safety suits among other hi-tech gadgets in its arsenal. Cabinet Minister Bharat Bhushan Ashu and Mayor Balkar Sandhu dedicated the advanced firefighting and rescue equipment purchased 44

The Congress leaders said that four mini-fire tenders with water and foam tanks, which had been purchased for `88.64 lakh, had been provided to the fire brigade to douse flames in narrow streets in the Old City areas. To improve the chances of survival for those buried under debris during a blaze, three life detectors worth `66.02 lakh have been provided to the fire department, Ashu said, adding that the `69.5 lakh combi tools will also help save time and improve efficiency during rescue operations. The tools can cut through iron and steel rods easily. Five thermal imaging cameras, which cost `41.79 lakh, will help to firefighters see through smoke and monitor the spread of fire. Besides, five aluminium firefighting suits worth `51 lakh have also been purchased for firemen so that they may safely enter burning buildings and douse the flames from inside. Five portable inflatable emergency lights have also been bought for

`11.74 lakh, said Ashu, while adding that the lights are based on a petrol engine system. Lights are required during a fire incident as the power supply of the area is snapped after a fire breaks out. Ashu said, “More equipment will be purchased for the department. We are actively monitoring smart city projects and our ranking has improved from the 54 to 37 in terms of projects proposed and completed under the mission.” The local bodies department has also provided two bullet motorcycles equipped with water mist extinguishers for quick response.

 Shortage of Firefighters Meanwhile, the fire brigade officials say they are understaffed and have asked the state government and municipal corporation to fill the vacant posts and sanction more posts for fire fighters in the industrial hub. A firefighter, requesting anonymity, they were facing an acute staff shortage. “Against 15 sanctioned posts of sub-fire officers, only five posts have been filled, and there is

Fire Safety Norm Violations: AMC Issues Final Closure Notice to 214 Schools The Action Was Taken as a Part of Drive Undertaken by AMC to Check Violations of Building Control Regulations by Commercial Establishments Including Hospitals, Nursing Homes, Restaurants and Hotels. (AMC) limits are required to get fire safety certificate or fire No Objection Certificate (NOC) under Gujarat Fire Prevention and Life Safety Measures Act 2013 and the Amendment Act 2021. The certificates issued are also required to get renewed from time to time.

Firefighters have been facing a tough time dousing flames without proper fire safety equipment. The resourceful firefighters have been making do with what they had. They have been using a dampened cloth to cover their faces while entering smoke-filled buildings and have used headlights for illumination during rescue operations at night. Fire safety suits were not available at all, which endangered due to which made the team vulnerable to burns. The fire brigade does not have a hydraulic ladder, a proposal for which was made around 15 years ago. After 16 people, including nine firefighters died in the ‘plastic factory tragedy’ in 2017, the fire fighters had demanded that the ladder be made available. MC officials said that a hydraulic ladder is also being purchased under the smart city mission. They have also demanded more fire stations in the industrial hub.

The Fire and Emergency Services department of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) issued final closure notice to 214 schools running in the city for violation of fire safety norms. The action was taken as a part of drive undertaken by AMC to check violations of building control regulations by commercial establishments including hospitals, nursing homes, restaurants and hotels. Already, similar notices have been issued to 42 hospitals and nursing homes and 13 restaurants and hotels. The notice issued to schools with a seven-day period are primary as well as high schools spread across the city in areas like Jamalpur, Shahpur, Panchkuva, Gomtipur, Naroda, Odhav, Maninagar, Prahladnagar, Sabarmati, Bodakdev, Aslali, Jashodanagar, Thaltej and Navrangpura. “Owners, trustees, managements of these 214 schools have not obtained fire safety certificate, fire NOC or have failed to get these renewed. They were final closure notice with a time limit of seven days,” AMC stated in an official release. The AMC started taking action against commercial establishments starting with hospitals and nursing homes following the Supreme Court’s stay last month on a state notification granting time until next year for buildings in violation of building control regulations. There were already accusations levelled by medical associations against the civic body for being partisan and questioned action was taken against hospitals and nursing homes and why it was turning a blind eye towards other commercial buildings for similar violations. 45

Protect your Skin Do you work with wet cement, paints or plaster? Maybe Adhesives? These are just some of the materials that can irritate your skin because they can contain harsh substances such as hexavalent chromium, calcium hydroxide, toluene, xylene, epoxy resins and lime. This can result in burns, dermatitis and other skin disorders, and even cancer. Symptoms of skin disorders include: • Red and/or swollen hands or fingers • Cracked or Itchy skin • Crusting or Thickening of the skin • Blisters • Flaky or Scaly skin • Burns Here's How you can protect your Skin: Prevent Exposure. Try to keep your arms and clothes dry. Wear protective clothing, including gloves, coveralls and boots. If you work outdoors, always apply sunscreen with a sun protection factor of 30 or higher. Clean your hands and skin before applying the sunscreen.

Cleaning Chemicals: Know the Risks Breathing problems, Itchy skin, rashes, burns & Irritated eyes. For some workers, including maintenance workers, janitors and housekeepers, these symptoms may have a common factor: Cleaning products. Chemicals in certain cleaning products also can cause asthma or trigger asthma attacks, OSHA cautions, adding that “some cleaning products contain hazardous chemicals that can enter the body through skin contact or from breathing gases into the lungs.” What can be done to keep workers who use these products safe? Stay Informed A number of factors should be considered before choosing a cleaning product, including ingredients, how it will be stored, whether ventilation is adequate where it's being used, if it can come in contact with a worker's skin, and whether mists or vapors are released.

Wear Gloves. Make sure you're using the right glove for the materials you're handling. The gloves should fit and keep your hands clean and dry.

If employees will be using hazardous cleaning chemicals, they need to be trained. Required training under OSHA's Hazard Communication Standard (1910.1200) includes understanding: • The health and physical hazards of cleaning chemicals. • How to properly handle, use and store the products? • What type of Personal Protective Equipment to wear? • How to use the hazard information, including labels and Safety Data Sheets? • Procedures to follow in the event of a spill.

Keep your Skin Clean. Wash your hands with soap and clean water if you come in contact with a hazardous substance. Use a pH neutral soap if you work with wet cement or other caustics.

Workers also should know to never mix different chemicals, because life-threatening gases potentially can be released. For example, OSHA warns that mixing cleaning products that contain bleach with ammonia can result in severe lung damage or death.

Gas Detection in Confined Spaces A direct-reading portable gas detector to test the atmosphere in a confined space before my workers enter. Why is a direct-reading monitor needed instead of an alarm-only monitor? Confined spaces are defined by OSHA as spaces large enough for workers to enter yet not intended for continuous use. Confined spaces have limited or restricted entry and exit points. These characteristics mean that gas levels can change rapidly, rendering the atmosphere hazardous with little warning. For this reason, it's important for confined space entrants and hole watchers to not only know - at any given moment - whether the space is safe or not, but also whether conditions are trending toward danger so they have time to make informed decisions about their safety.

reading monitor, they would have known that the space had a nearly unsafe oxygen level before entering and been able to ventilate the space or delay the entry. Direct-reading monitors show workers how safe the atmosphere is as well as give them a chance to recognize patterns and respond to shifting gas levels. In addition to testing the atmosphere with a directreading monitor before entering a confined space, it's a best practice to continuously monitor atmospheric conditions.

So, How can you protect your workers in confined spaces? Supply them with direct-reading monitors. In fact, OSHA requires the use of direct-reading monitors when testing the atmosphere of a confined space before entering.

Gas levels can be unpredictable and change quickly even between periodic checks. A personal gas monitor with a slide-on sampling pump allows workers to use their device for pre-entry sampling, then remove the pump and wear it on a lapel for continuous monitoring while within the confined space.

You might be tempted to use alarm-only gas monitors because of their promises of simplicity - your workers only have to know whether the device is in alarm mode and, when it is, they evacuate the space.

Workers inside confined spaces aren't the only ones who can benefit from using direct-reading monitors - 60% of confined-space deaths are would-be rescuers.

However, alarm-only monitors don't give workers the information or time they need to prepare for risky situations.

There are personal and area monitors that can wirelessly connect to share gas concentrations and alarms in real time.

Let's say that a worker takes a reading of the confined space with an alarm-only detector before entering and the alarm doesn't activate. The oxygen level is above the minimum safe level of 19.5%, but only barely. The worker then assumes the space is safe and enters. It might only take a few minutes for the oxygen level to drop below the safe amount, giving the worker no notice that they need to leave the confined space. This can lead to a rushed exit if the worker is lucky and a tragedy if they're not.

This gives all workers onsite the information they might need to execute a safe rescue. This connectivity keeps your workers visible to attendants even when they can't be seen or heard.

On the other hand, if the worker had used a direct50

Confined Spaces are dangerous, but you can reduce the risk by following OSHA guidelines and best practices. Providing your workers direct-reading monitors - especially those that monitor the atmosphere continuously and wirelessly connect - is the best way to help them return home safely at the end of the day. The Faults in EU and US PPE Standards… and How Both have their Uses. to have the same minimum PPE performance requirements and PPE in every factory. Yet despite this well-meaning objective, the strategy often comes unstuck, partly because of the problem of meeting the differing standards that apply in the different regions. A useful approach however might be that various standards can be used as opportunities to improve safety globally by developing an understanding of both (or all). The different approaches of North American and European standards are nowhere more apparent than in those for chemical protective clothing, starting with different governing principles; in Europe the approach is prescriptive; CE certified products are a legal requirement. In the US however the approach is advisory; most standards in the US are optional. There are no legal obligations to sell or buy firefighters clothing, FR workwear or chemical suits that are certified to a standard.

Mr. Martin Lill Marketing Manager Emea/row Director: Lakeland Europe.

As the world gets smaller, it becomes increasingly anachronistic that different regions use different standards for the same PPE. EN standards in Europe or ASTM, NFPA and OSHA standards in North America dominate. In other regions, if standards are used at all, one or the other tends to be used - or sometimes both, depending on product. Global Manufacturers develop facilities in multiple regions, so it's not uncommon to try to standardise PPE used. After all, its common sense that a business ought 52

In the case of chemical hazmat suits the different approaches are stark.

 European EN Standards for Chemical Protective Clothing Four standards define five "Types" of clothing based on the protection offered: gastight protection (Type 1), liquid jet spray, spray and aerosol protection (Types 3, 4 and 6), and dust protection (Type 5). Certification involves three types of testing: physical properties of fabric, chemical penetration resistance (for Type 6) or permeation resistance (for Types 1, 3 and 4), and whole garment "Type Tests". It is the "Type Tests" that assess the whole suit, attempting, with limited success, to provide an indication of real-world performance. They include very specific criteria for pass or fail. To be certified a chemical suit must have passed its relevant Type test. There are drawbacks. Attempts in a lab to replicate real-world scenarios always fail to some extent. Real-world scenarios are never standard, so any test will almost never cover the parameters of a specific variation. The consequences are users' risk assuming misleading indication of protection offered for their own specific application - especially when in many cases users too often assume certified PPE is safe to use in any circumstance within the protection type anyway. Worse, the prescriptive nature of EN standards can result in a tendency to fail to properly understand the application, the protection and the PPE, simply shifting the responsibility for selection onto the question of "is it certified or not?". (Every PPE sales representative has been involved in a negotiation that consists of two questions: "Is it Certified?" and "How much is it?") October 2021 - www.visionmediahitech.com

EXPERT TALK And because prescriptive standards fail to cover all possibilities there is a tendency to try to expand the scope. Hence EN standards are growing and become more complex with each new version (witness the new versions of standards for gas tight suits and fire-fighters clothing!). When users' understanding of the most basic standards is often already limited, increasingly complex standards make the problem worse. There is a real danger they become so complex, and that so few properly understand them, that the standards themselves become a hazard, because what accompanies misunderstanding, is assumptions that are often just wrong. Finally, the European focus on product means standards tend to address different types of PPE in isolation, whereas in the real-world it is invariably used with other PPE. This, again, risks users making assumptions about protection. (A classic case is wearing a standard disposable coverall over FR workwear when flame and chemical protection are both required. Many fail to realise that the disposable will literally destroy the protective properties of the FR coverall).

 North American OSHA Protection Levels The US approach is very different. In fact, for chemical suits there are no specific standards. Rather, OSHA, the Occupational Safety & Health Administration, has developed the simple guidance of four general protection levels for chemical hazards. These focus on the level of hazard and give prime importance to respiratory protection. The highest is Level A (High level respiratory, dermal and optical hazards) down to the lowest, Level D (no respiratory or dermal hazard) These protection levels provide general guidance for users on the totality of protection required, including suit, respiratory protection, gloves, boots and so on. Arguably, this approach scores some benefits over the EN counterpart: • It addresses the whole PPE ensemble rather than individual items of PPE seperately

October 2021 - www.safesecuremagazine.com

• Not only is it easier to understand, it allows more flexibility in PPE selection and combination • Rather than attempting to prescribe PPE with specific minimum performance levels, it provides a simple overall PPE framework, thus shifting responsibility to the specifier, and forcing better understanding of the application and individual PPE. There is at least a case to argue this is a safer policy, given that no matter how prescriptive and complex is a standard, it can never cover all eventualities in the market, whilst the specifier that properly understands his individual application can account for all the possibilities that could develop. On the other hand, the lack of testing and prescriptive elements of the U.S. guidance also has drawbacks. • It fails to provide any or easy performance comparison of different chemical suits. • It fails to identify minimum performance requirements, design features or construction elements, and therefor fails to indicate whether any individual PPE product will do the job of protection that it should. (Again, this responsibility falls back to the specifier) There are other advantages and drawbacks of both systems. However, the obvious conclusion for the diligent safety manager is that both may be of use. It is worthwhile taking the time to understand both as each has its place in contributing to effective PPE selection. In the case of chemical suits, OSHA protection levels provide a useful framework guide to selection of the overall ensembles of PPE required. Meanwhile EN standards provide a more detailed guide to assessing performance of individual PPE, ensuring that it achieves minimum performance and will do the job it should. So, ignoring standards that don't apply in your region might not be the best policy if your objective is to ensure the best protection. Whether European, US or any other standard, each can play a role and offer useful tools in ensuring the best PPE for the job. For a more detailed review and comparison of European EN standards and U.S. OSHA Protection Levels for chemical protection, and how they can both contribute to better PPE selection, read our recent blog at blog.lakeland.com/europe.

Visual Literacy in the Workplace

How does incorporating visual literacy with connected worker solutions lead to safer workplaces? Every year, more than 5,000 people are killed on the job and more than 2.8 million suffer jobrelated injuries or illnesses. It's paramount that employees be fully engaged and aware of their surroundings to identify and mitigate hazards. Finding innovative ways to educate teams on hazard identification and support them in making the right decisions in the moment can result in Safer Work Environments.

Hazards in the workplace are often overlooked, which is compounded by the fact that more than half of the workforce is disengaged with its work. Safety suffers when people are disengaged, with reports indicating that disengagement can double the number of incidents and injuries. Ninety percent of workers with access to good technology reported being more productive on the job, but many on the front line do not feel equipped or supported with the proper tools.

Lockout/Tagout Needs What features should be looking for in a lockout padlock?

Keyed-Different Padlocks: With each padlock having its own unique key, this option often provides the most unique key code variety. When it's mission critical to ensure every lock in the facility is unique, request keyed-different padlocks with key charting or key recording. This is ideal for avoiding key duplication when multiple maintenance personnel need to lock out equipment. Keyed-Alike Padlocks: Also providing the most unique key code variety, this option uses the same key to open each padlock. Keyed-alike padlocks are beneficial when multiple locks are assigned to a single employee, as long as you remember that OSHA requires that no employee should be able to open a lock applied by someone else. Master-Keyed Padlocks: The master key can open all locks, including keyedalike and keyed-different locks, but delivers fewer unique key codes. This option makes it easier for a supervisor to remove a lock in an emergency. Grand master-keyed padlocks: The grand master key can open all locks grouped into two or more master-keyed systems, but limits the number of unique key codes available. Use this option for larger teams requiring multiple levels of supervisory access.

Organizing Your Padlocks

Quite a few factors should be looked at, including your lockout program size and complexity, organizational needs, and specific application needs – such as electrical or nonelectrical. Large facilities with complex lockout/tagout programs Managing a lockout/tagout program for multiple departments or facilities creates additional complexities to consider when selecting safety padlocks. Finding a lock with a secure keyway (where the key can't be duplicated at a hardware store) and enough unique key codes to ensure there's no key duplication is a big challenge made even greater by key systems that can limit the number of available key codes. Look for a padlock with the highest number of unique key codes, even with these different keying options: October 2021 - www.safesecuremagazine.com

After determining the right key system, consider the most efficient organization to keep track of your padlocks. Colorcoding, engraving or lock labels help identify machine maintenance status, personnel or departments involved, as well as reduce the incidence of misplaced or lost padlocks to help ensure compliance. Color-coding helps differentiate locks by trade, department or job function, and visually communicates who's still working on a machine. Or, color-code your locks by facility location to help reduce losses when working with outside contractors. Engraving is a more permanent way to 55

Cont. from pg. 54

keep organized. Consider engraving the department name on each lock and key code for easy matching. Lock labels easily organize padlocks that can be quickly updated with employee names or pictures using an onsite printer. Pair them with longbodied padlocks to accommodate languages or additional details such as department, phone number or photo.

Electrical Implications for Padlocks When locking out equipment where there's risk of arc flash or electrical conductivity, make sure to use a padlock that fits your workspace and won't increase the risk of injury. Nonconductive and Nonsparking materials: Look for nylon-body padlocks with nylon shackles and nonconductive ball bearings and drivers to ensure the padlocks don't close any circuits or create an arc flash point. Compact Padlocks: When space is at a premium (e.g. a circuit breaker), compact padlocks are ideal and can often still accommodate a closed breaker box or electrical cabinet door. Cable Padlocks: For lockout needs for multiple circuit breakers, cable padlocks are ideal. This one padlock easily fits through a line of circuit breaker lockout devices so you only have to apply one lock overall. 56

Further, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, companies pay more than $1 billion a week for workplace injuries. Safety leaders and supervisors have the opportunity to engage employees with the right training and smart technology that uses leading indicator data, such as moving vehicles and trip hazards, resulting in early hazard identification and mitigation. Investing in connected worker solutions that incorporate visual literacy training and are implemented directly on a mobile phone or tablet enhances workers' ability to see hazards and communicate them appropriately. This combination of tools supports the determination of what risk the hazards present and the appropriate action to mitigate potential impact. Collecting this data in real time through connected worker solutions can help leaders understand the risk profiles of their work areas and proactively resolve safety concerns before incidents occur. One of the key ways to address this issue is through innovative training augmented with modern connected worker technology that provides in-the-moment support, reinforces training and enables data capture that can be acted on. Innovative visual literacy training helps workers better understand what is behind the data they are capturing, and therefore is central to safety performance. The four key benefits of incorporating connected digital solutions with visual literacy training are: • Daily work practices that include visual literacy and enhanced hazard recognition can dramatically improve risk mitigation and reduce serious injuries and fatalities. • Leaders have the opportunity for real-time visibility to capture insights into trends and top areas of risk for agile continuous improvements. • Visual literacy training helps workers truly see their environment so they can identify concerns and communicate risks before an incident occurs. • Developing the ability to think critically. By following a disciplined process of improving what we see, assessing what it means and determining what action to take simplifies complicated work environments and focuses our attention on what really matters. This can help everyone from feeling overwhelmed by the amount of data being captured through audits, observations, checklists, work permits and more. Visual literacy training and connected worker software that provides leading indicators in real time can truly improve your safety program, improve engagement, and identify and mitigate risks at the earliest point.
