Greetings...!!! Working towards providing a healthy, safe and secure workplace is crucial to maintaining and employees, guests, and facilities against accidents. You should review your safety procedure regularly with the help of the management team to ensure it stays updated.  Health The most effective health policy is one that works to inform and protect employees with a strong basis for training and education. Proper employee training in how to manage and prevent diseases in the workplace can reduce the fear that is likely to come in the face of a flu outbreak or when there is something more serious as present scenario of Pandemic. The right education also helps you and your employees understand the reality of communicable diseases, their effects, transmission, preventive measures and safety precautions at an individual and organizational level.  Safety A safe workplace begins with safe habits. A common workplace hazard is falling; ensure your policy addresses falling as a potential hazard and includes preventive measures such as removing obstacles a log walk ways and keeping the floor dry. Sanitizing the area properly and at the regular interval. Additionally, employees need to put clear warning signs if their work poses risks, such as cleaning in progress, beware of slippery floors, no mask no entry, maintain social distancing. Legible and Visible warning signs around danger zones are also quite useful in maintaining a safe environment.  Security One way to reduce work stress is to ensure you provide a secure environment. Better if you install a badge system that limits entry into specific areas to authorized individuals. In case you lay off or fire an employee, make sure you cancel their badge immediately and deny them further access to the facility. This prevents revenge accidents, where the employee can plot to re-enter your workplace and commit a violent crime. Additionally, upgrade your security system to include surveillance cameras to monitor everyone entering and leaving the building. You should also up skill your security personnel to better handle security breaches and improve their emergency response.

EXPERT TALK

Video Technology is Emerging as a Key Tool for Public Safety Post-Pandemic hospital beds and PPE equipment can be saved for pa ents who need it more.

Country Manager, Milestone Systems India.

 Public Spaces The threat of increased infec on has made social distancing and crowd control mandatory in public places, shops, offices and business establishments; wherever there is poten al for people to gather in large numbers. As businesses start to re-open, enforcing these measures will become even more of a challenge and virtually a ghtrope walk between safety and sustenance. Video Technology Solu ons, combined with an open pla orm Video Management So ware, can help provide a feature-rich tech pla orm to tackle the challenges ahead. With advanced features such as heat mapping and occupancy sta s cs, crowd coun ng for public spaces within retail or private sectors, distancing detec on and enforcement of one-way direc on in retail outlets, businesses can ensure be er compliance within safety measures.

Even as efforts to control the COVID19 pandemic intensify, the world is preparing to re-open economies and get back to business. Economies, jobs and livelihoods are in dire need of revival a er the long pandemicinduced hiatus, but businesses and governments also have the unenviable task of ensuring public health safety.

With an open pla orm VMS, business owners will be able to regulate access from a centralized loca on and benefit from sta s cs and data gathered. An open pla orm VMS will also allow the integra on of other devices such as audio, visual display systems and even mobile devices to help with challenging issues like crowd control. Drones and Robots can also be integrated with the VMS to aid with social distancing measures on a much larger scale.

Amidst all this, video technology solu ons have emerged as one of the key tools for governments and businesses to ensure the safety of customers, employees and the general public.

 Data Privacy Concerns Must be Addressed With visual and other forms of data being increasingly collected through the adop on of video and other technologies, data privacy is a key concern for both businesses and individuals to watch out for. Businesses and governments must use the powers of technology responsibly as outlined in the guidelines of interna onal legisla on such as the GDPR and Milestone's Copenhagen Le er.

Mr. Ritesh Deokar

 Video's Key Role in Fighting the COVID19 Pandemic Transportation Video came to the aid early in the ba le against COVID19. As the pandemic unfolded globally, immigra on counters at airports were equipped with thermal cameras that helped screen passengers for COVID-related symptoms. Thermal imaging, which ensures that scanning is contactless and safe for both the tester and the tested, is now being adopted more widely around transporta on. Interna onal Airports across nine Indian ci es have installed thermal cameras and Indian Railways is rolling it out across more and more railway sta ons in India.  Healthcare For healthcare providers and hospitals, video technology is providing safer alterna ves for pa ent care and treatment. Tele-Kiosks for instance are facilita ng video consulta ons with doctors, making contactless and distant consulta on possible. These kiosks are connected to devices which can monitor vital signs such as blood pressure, oxygen satura on and temperature. This enables healthcare workers and doctors to remotely monitor COVID-infected pa ents, with fewer in-person touch points required.

With the increasing need for provisions such as contact tracing, The EY Future Consumer Index found that the public is now more recep ve to make private informa on available if it's for the greater good of the society. For example, millions of people in India have downloaded the Arogya Setu app to stop the spread of COVID-19 through community-driven contact tracing even if that means having to constantly share their loca on with the App. In Singapore, we found that eight in ten Singaporeans are recep ve to the usage of video technology, such as thermal imagining cameras and crowd management video analy cs, when underpinned by a health benefit. Yet, there is s ll a significant por on of the popula on that is unfamiliar with the purpose and benefits of such solu ons, and therefore greater public educa on of benefits, protec on and privacy regula ons are required to sustain the overall acceptance of video technology. This shows that despite people's willingness to part with private data for a greater common cause, businesses s ll have the responsibility to priori ze data protec on and privacy as it emerges as a key tool, changing the ways we live and do business.

Innova on that ensures that businesses and governments can maximize the This could also enable telemedicine for less cri cal value add of data while respec ng individual privacy and data protec on pa ents so that resources in short supply such as regula ons will be the way forward in our future. 08

SMART PPE and COVID-19 parameters/condi ons of both, the body of the worker and the environment. Therefore in func onal terms these wearables collect data, adjust to condi ons, and warn of hazards. Bluetooth also allows smart PPE to connect to other devices in real me, o en using a so ware that is integra ng informa on from various PPE wearables. The poten al of smart PPE seems limited by a HSE professional ingenuity. Smart helmets detect impact, free falls, temperature, humidity, brightness, and in any other way you can program the chips to improve safety. When interfaced with GPS tracking you can map workers' loca on on large construc on sites or oil refineries. Similarly smart safety eyewear can display cri cal work data in the corner of the lens so the wearer is updated on changing informa on. This allows workers/operators to move out of control rooms for inspec ons. Smart safety gloves with built-in Near-field communica on (NFC) chips allow users to connect with informa on on their phone or tablet.

Mr. Monish Gulati Emergency Response Specialist and Security Consultant. Specializes in Emergency Response and Crisis Management Planning, Security Assessment & Advice.

Most safety professionals will light heartedly acknowledge that post COVID-19, the word 'PPE' has found a firm place in the common man's vocabulary. Most would also agree that the increasing focus and adop on of digital means within COVID-19 mi ga on measures across domains and sectors, has provided the much needed impetus to the concept of 'Smart PPE' which has been pilo ng around in the occupa onal safety space for last couple of years or more. Safety Managers constantly seek safer equipment and processes for their workers in high risk environments. Firefigh ng, construc on, oil and gas, manufacturing, mining, emergency response all require various types and levels of Personal Protec ve Equipment (PPE). For managers who make safety a priority and con nually seek the most efficient solu ons not just to comply but exceed the requirements of Occupa onal Health and Safety Administra on (OSHA) regula ons, the advances in technology by enhancing PPE has provided new 'Smarter' ways to protect workers. Smart PPE refers to wearable pieces of equipment, such as helmets, that connect to the internet or Bluetooth and deliver safety informa on to the wearer or others in the field, o en, a supervisor. To deliver this crucial informa on, smart devices can respond to 10

The versa lity of Smart PPE has allowed it to transcend the tradi onal PPE func onal matrix to interface with safety processes and procedures such as lock-out-tag-out, confined space working ect. Chips in PPE can prevent the wearer from entering dangerous areas without proper protec on. Chips may also be embedded in the soles of safety shoes to detect unsafe condi ons such as slip hazards. Sensors embedded in clothing can monitor gas, chemicals, heat, in the work environment and no fy of these dangers. Similarly safety gloves can be used as swipe cards for access control and prevent users from gaining access to unsafe areas or risking crosscontamina on. h ps://safetymanagement.eku.edu/blog/smart-technology-ppe-improvingworker-safety/  COVID-19 and Smart PPE COVID-19 mi ga on measures have placed the requirements of PPE, temperature monitoring, social distancing, hygiene and contact tracing on workplaces/shopfloors. Smart PPE such as safety glasses could be used prevent people from entering a hazardous area if they are not wearing the glasses. We can ensure the same for other PPE such as masks and helmets. Smart devices are available that buzz when a person comes within two metres of the device. These small devices can be worn on the workers' shoe, where they discreetly buzz if someone is closer than two metres. This allows shop-floors and other workplaces to con nue opera ons while following social distancing measures. However, more importantly, it would also be possible to tell if a par cular worker has been exposed to a COVID-19 posi ve case during the last 2 weeks. This would enable contact tracing, which has been proving to be very difficult in manufacturing units. PPE clothing are already in use in the oil, gas and mining sectors to monitor a worker's temperature to ensure they are not overhea ng or developing hypothermia. Similar arrangements can be put in place for workers in highly sani sed environments and subsequently for other workers. Such sensors placed in armpits yield more accurate results than the commonly used temperature gun.  Conclusion Smart PPE will lead to reduc on in errors, and therefore the number and severity of workplace accidents and injuries, giving rise to improved produc vity, performance and efficiency and consequent long-term cost savings. When coupled with analy cs it can iden fy pa erns or poten al dangers that could lead to injury or increased risks, par cularly in hazardous work environments, such as mining, oil and gas, where worker safety is cri cal. Smart PPE saves me and increases compliance, resul ng in improved worker protec on, comfort, health and safety and consequently a happier workforce. November 2020 - www.visionmediahitech.com

How to Prevent Snifng Attacks

Mr. Sonit Jain

Various types of sniffers are available and more are being created every day. Hence snifng is among the easiest hacking techniques out there. Sonit Jain, CEO of GajShield Infotech shares few precautions that can help enhance your data security and prevent snifng attacks.

CEO of GajShield Infotech

 Preventing Snifng Attacks You can prevent sniffing a acks by taking a few precau onary measures that can make it challenging for the hackers to either tap into your network traffic or peek into the data that is being transmi ed.

 Route Public WiFi Requests to Head Ofce Firewall Connec ng to unsecured networks can increase chances of sniffing a acks, but in this age when remote working is becoming the norm, it is challenging to monitor every connec on request. Leveraging services that can route all network requests to your head office firewall can help you prevent sniffing a acks through unsecured networks. For instance, you can use an Enterprise Cloud  Encrypt Your Communication with a VPN Sniffing a acks are performed to collect informa on solu on that can route all the network requests to your head office that is transmi ed over the network. Hence you can firewall, where you can apply security policies and protocols to all prevent sniffing a acks by encryp ng all the the requests and secure your connec on. communica on that is received or sent over your network. leak preven on policies. They can include both content and context in their policies to restrict any informa on containing those restric ve parameters from leaving the office network. For instance, if organiza ons include the keyword "customer" in their policy, then data leak preven on solu on will restrict any outgoing mail and fax containing it. It can prevent data leak on Sonit Jain, CEO of GajShield Infotech shares some of the various pla orms such as E-Mail, SaaS/Web Applica ons, web possible ways and best prac ces of data security are: uploads, IM chats, Social Media, etc.  Filtering Threats Filtering threat means to monitor data as it travels through various on-premise and cloud applica ons to detect any possible threat. It ensures that all data sent to and received from different applica ons are free from malware. This will help your cybersecurity team to prevent the entry of any possible malware into the enterprise network.

 Securing Roaming Users Most of today's businesses have adopted a work from home setup during this tes ng mes of COVID-19 outbreak. Being digital, at least partly, if not en rely has helped us all with the convenience of working remotely and maintaining business opera ons running. While remote working does bring ease of opera ons but a racts various threats as employees operate on various applica ons. Policies. For instance, if an employee connects to enterprise applica ons through a public network, then all the network ac vi es would be routed through the office firewall to ensure data security.

How Data Breaches can Impact Company Valuations Data reaches have reportedly been known to impact company valua ons during mergers and acquisi ons. Companies that suffer data breaches sell for lower values than they normally would be based on their financial health and performance. It has also been reported that companies that suffer data breaches lost their stock value by 7.5%. This is primarily caused due to the perceived loss in reputa on and the consequent loss in market share. Being affected by a data breach also limits a business’s opportuni es to grow and expand. It turns away poten al business partners and B2B organiza ons looking to form a supply chain. That’s because the cybersecurity of a supply

chain is only as strong as its weakest link, compromising the data security of the en re supply chain network. We have seen increasing cybera acks, especially during COVID-19 outbreak, targe ng remote uses for data breach. To prevent data breaches and consequent loss in value, it is thus essen al that businesses invest in reliable cybersecurity measures. An advanced firewall acts a potent layer of protec on against all threats, from planned a acks by hackers to uninten onal data leaks by employees. It helps secure remote users of the organiza on and helps organiza ons remain valuable and trustworthy for not just your customers but also your investors and partners.

Increase Work From Home Efciency With ‘Allow But Monitor’ Security Approach. This method is inefficient and can also hamper productivity, even more given the current work-fromhome situation. Sonit Jain, CEO of GajShield Infotech shares a solution to increase efficiency at work from home and shares a data-centric approach for safeguarding our data, and also ensure that tasks are carried out seamlessly.  The Problem with the Website and Application Blocking Approach Blocking an application or website naturally restricts complete usage. However, employees may need to access them in certain situations. For example, a client may require you to share files over collaborative apps such as Google Docs or employees might require access to certain blocked websites for professional work. Changing permissions to allow access to these sites can also result in misuses. Once a website or application is allowed, there is no control over the data being sent and received by the employees.  The ‘Allow But Monitor’ Solution with Enhanced Data Security The ‘allow, but monitor’ approach allows unrestricted access to the internet. However, every activity of the employees is monitored. With such an approach, data security is applied to the data itself. While applications and November 2020 - www.safesecuremagazine.com

websites are allowed, there are restrictions on the data that can be shared over these platforms. Administrators are notified if any unauthorized data is accessed or shared outside the enterprise. For instance, the ‘allow but monitor’ approach allows employees to access email applications and websites without any restrictions. However, their data handling activity, such as the emails sent, received, data uploaded to a website, portal etc. are monitored continuously, including data transactional and other contextually aligned details. The system will allow the user to send and receive emails, share files using the file-sharing application and upload files on business portals etc. in adherence to the security permissions, but will block data transactions that contain restricted data that the user is not authorized to access. Thus, such an approach enables employees to carry out their daily tasks seamlessly and proves to be a better approach than blocking access altogether. Blocking and banning websites and applications is no longer an efficient data security option. We need to take a data-centric approach for safeguarding our data, and also ensure that tasks are carried out seamlessly. GajShield’s Data Security Firewall adopts the ‘allow but monitor’ approach by applying security to the data ensuring the highest level of data protection on both stationed office employees and employees working from home by bringing such employees under the enterprise’s security infrastructure. 13

These hats were made of steamed canvas and glue, and were designed as daily protec ve headgear for miners.

AI Cameras Watching out for Workers In real life, ar ficial intelligence technology is being used around the world every single day to make workplaces operate more efficiently, more produc vely, and of course more safely.

Over the course of the 20th century, the hard hat evolved to become the brightly colored, impact-resistant headgear of choice for those working in hazardous environments. And today, many countries have legislated to ensure hard hats are worn at all mes in such places - with good reason.

How Logistics Parks can Improve Efciency and Site Security with Smart Video

Submi ed by Prama Hikvision India The leading smart video solu ons for logis cs parks add several layers of intelligence compared to tradi onal security cameras, helping operators to enhance personnel management, vehicle management, site management, and goods management.

Global supply chains, the booming online retail market, and rising demand for manufactured goods have driven growth in the logis cs industry. An array of materials and goods are constantly on the move by truck - arriving at logis cs parks before the last miles of their journey to stores or customers' addresses. With goods moving 24/7/365, logis cs parks need to work extremely efficiently to stay ahead of demand, and to ensure that goods are delivered on me. Addi onally, 16

security is a top concern for operators - from the moment shipments arrive, to the moment they are delivered to their final des na ons. When it comes to achieving these goals, security cameras are cri cal - helping operators to monitor vehicles and people entering facili es, and to track goods leaving the premises. However, next-genera on smart video solu ons provide a number of addi onal benefits that help operators to operate more efficiently and securely than ever before. These include: Enhanced Personnel Management With the latest smart video solu ons, such as Prama Hikvision's Smart Logis cs Park Solu on, site operators can protect staff more effec vely against accident and injury. This is achieved with automa c detec on of personal protec ve equipment (PPE), including eye wear, gloves, ear protectors and more. November 2020 - www.visionmediahitech.com

Personal Protec ve Equipment (PPE) Detec on

Optimized Vehicle and Dock Management With smart video, site operators can create an op mized vehicle and load management workflow – from truck entry to docking and cargo pickup. The Prama Hikvision Smart Logis cs Park Solu on achieves this with a dashboard that displays the status of each loading dock, allowing vehicles to be directed efficiently as soon as they register at the park's security checkpoint. Based on simple red, yellow and green indicators, vehicles can be processed more efficiently and queuing can be reduced.

One example of this is Prama Hikvision's embedded hard hat detec on technology, which triggers automated alerts when team members enter restricted areas without their hard hats on. This enables logis cs park operators to significantly improve health and safety, without deploying addi onal team members to supervise hard hat compliance. As an addi onal benefit, operators can improve security with facial recogni on technology, which ensures that only authorized personnel enter restricted areas. Facial recogni on can also make it faster and easier for employees to move around the logis cs park, helping them work more produc vely and reducing wai ng mes at park entrances and exits. Improved Site Management and Safety Apart from the access control facili es with face recogni on technology to prevent unauthorized visitors entering in the premise, logis cs parks need more intelligent perimeter protec on to improve security. This is now possible with Prama Hikvision's thermal cameras, which provide crystalclear video footage, even in zero-light environments. Radar and dome cameras can also be combined to detect any unauthorized people or vehicles entering the site, to trigger automated alerts for any suspicious movements, and to record clear video evidence of any incidents that occur. With high-defini on and low-light smart cameras, logis cs parks can also replace manual security patrols with 'remote' patrols. In this scenario, security teams check images from strategically placed, high-defini on cameras based on a patrol 'schedule' and raise alerts if any suspicious movements are observed. To further increase efficiency, remote patrols can be enhanced with AI technology, which enables regular security checks with no need to review video footage manually. In this case, only video images that iden fy a poten al security threat are sent to site security teams, drama cally reducing staffing requirements and costs. November 2020 - www.safesecuremagazine.com

Warehouse Dock Management

As well as improving the vehicle processing workflow, park operators can improve access security based on vehicle license plate recogni on technology. Smart cameras can also be used to monitor the speed of vehicles entering the logis cs park, to detect illegal parking, and to send automated alerts to security teams when rules are breached. Secure and Efcient Goods Management With smart video, logis cs parks can create an automated, secure, and fully trackable goods management process. This supports the secure flow of goods at one site or across mul ple sites and includes solu ons for accurate, secure goods scanning, tracking and delivery. One example of this the Prama Hikvision Smart Logis cs Park Solu on, which incorporates all the infrastructure needed for effec ve goods management, from monitoring cameras to smart code readers and scanners. Using embedded so ware tools, site operators can allocate an ID to every pallet or parcel and track it through to final delivery, easily search and view video footage rela ng to specific pallets or parcels, and generate daily inventory reports quickly and easily. Finally, logis cs park operators can drama cally reduce fire risks in the warehouse with Prama Hikvision. This is achieved by combining thermal cameras and smoke detectors, which alert security teams of poten al fires before any damage is done. 17

Small and medium businesses have many of the same surveillance and security requirements as larger organiza ons. They need to iden fy and react to perimeter breaches in real me, and they need to automate footage searches to fast locate true events. Another example could be the security and protec on for your residen al area. Why You Need Accurate Alarms? Imagine, when you need to look into the security of your house, the first line you probably would consider is its perimeter. The idea is to prevent intruders from breaking in. However, conven onal surveillance system may not do the job well enough. Why? Conven onal surveillance systems provide certain detec on features enabled by video content analysis (VCA), such as mo on detec on, line-crossing detec on and intrusion detec on, but, would simply compound all event detec ons, triggering frequent alarms when an object is detected. This could be an animal, a shadow, or other natural movements - we call them false alarms. As a result, you need to spend me to inves gate each one, poten ally delaying any necessary response and generally affec ng efficiency. So being able to iden fy the real threats - the presence of a human or a vehicle - would greatly improve the accuracy of perimeter VCA func ons. Prama Hikvision's hassle-free AcuSense technology can help achieve this goal, and give you a cost-effec ve way to protect your loca ons and assets. November 2020 - www.visionmediahitech.com

Use of Medium Velocity Water Spray Nozzles in Protection of Bulk Fuel Tanks A major can be extremely disastrous in a plant, if there are bulk fuel, flammable and combus ble liquid storage tanks in it. The primary purpose to installing a deluge water spray system around such tanks is to limit the heat transfer to such bulk fuel tanks from neighbouring fires, prevent tank damage and tank collapse due to such fires. It also gives more me so that emergency fire services can act swi ly. Medium Velocity (MV) spray nozzles are commonly used in fixed water spray deluge systems. The selec on of the proper MV spray nozzle is made considering the water spray coverage area and density required for the hazard being protected. The system is designed considering water demand for simultaneous opera on of all MV-nozzles installed around the tank. As per NFPA 15, water spray applied to vessel surfaces should not be less than 0.25 gpm/ 2 which is 10.2 lpm/m2 of the exposed surface area. The horizontal distance between the MV-nozzles should be such that their spray pa erns overlap each other, and the ver cal distance should not be more than 12 feet. Cooling by water run-down is expected in such cases. Minimum opera ng pressure of any MV-nozzle protec ng such hazards should be 20 PSI (1.4 bar). Medium Velocity water spray nozzle has an external deflector, which discharges water in a direc onal cone shaped pa ern of small droplet size. The water is uniformly distributed over the surface to be protected. The Nozzles are 22

effec vely designed to apply water to exposed ver cal, horizontal, curved, and irregular shaped surfaces to allow cooling to prevent excessive absorp on of heat from external fire and avoid structural damage or spread of fire. MV-nozzle placement and direc on should such that water spray covers exposed surfaces. Dry areas occurring because of incomplete nozzle coverage can also result in forma on of few hot spots which could be a weak point for fires to occur.

MV-Nozzle offers required water spray and coverage by selec on of k-factor and spray angle. Water discharge pa ers from all spray nozzles are observed to ensure that the coverage is properly achieved by nozzle posi oning and discharge pa erns. The water supply to the MV-Nozzle system is controlled by a deluge valve, which shall operate via electrically actuated solenoid valve, or via wet-pilot/dry-pilot detec on or a combina on of systems. While response me from detec on of fire to ac va on of the spray system deluge valve is considered maximum 40 seconds. Reverse Ac on MV-Nozzles are designed specifically to protect tank tops and are installed in upright posi on for wider-coverage through their hemi-spherical spray pa ern. Essential Components of Workplace Fire Safety Training Programs If there's heat, a source of igni on, flammable materials, fuel, and the like; employees need to understand the poten al for a fire that these things represent. If your employees can recognize situa ons where they're working with these things or observe them being used in a way and manner that they shouldn't be - you'll prevent a lot of fires from star ng in the first place.  What To Do If There's A Fire The next logical step is understanding what they need to do if there's a fire. There should be a clear-cut chain of command in the event of a fire alarm as well as a thorough once-over as to how fire alarm and fire suppression systems work. Employees should all know how to ac vate a fire alarm and how to call emergency services. While it's true that Manufacturers and Industrial facili es have a greater fire risk, the reality is that any kind of business can experience a fire in the workplace. Because of that, it's important that your employees are safe and protected from fire hazards, and training them on how to handle themselves in that kind of situa on should be a priority for any business owner. While the stakes are certainly higher when it comes to fire - fire safety is like anything else. The more you're trained and the more ready you are - the safer you'll be in the event they actually occur. That being said there are lots of fire safety companies out there who teach things in a variety of ways so what're the things you should look for in a fire safety program? That's what we're here to discuss today. Here are the four key components that any good workplace fire safety program should have.  Recognizing Hazards If we've said it once, we've said it a thousand mes - fire preven on is the best way to combat the threat of real fires occurring. Teaching employees to iden fy poten al hazards before they become actual threats is paramount to any workplace fire safety program. 24

Knowing gives your employee the base knowledge they need in order to react to a situa on. They'll know how to let people know there's a fire, how to call for help, and who to listen to and seek out.  Responding Properly To The Fire Outside of what we talked about, how should employees respond to a fire? This is where things can get ambiguous because some of it depends on the workplace you're in and the severity and loca on of the fire. But regardless of that, there are some must-have ingredients in your training. Things like: • Your company's evacua on plan • Your employee's specific roles in execu ng that plan • How to leave the building • What to do as they leave the building • Where to regroup • And what to do if they encounter fire, heat, or smoke as they leave the building. By covering these things, you can rest assured that your employees will be as prepared as possible. No one wants to think about a fire happening in your building, but if it does - it's vital that everyone knows exactly what to do.  Using Fire Extinguishers The last essen al ingredient of a workplace fire safety program is fire ex nguisher educa on. It's vital to teach employees how to use ex nguishers properly. In addi on, they'll be taught about the limita ons of these devices, how long they should try to use the device, and when they should flee and escape to safety. No workplace is worth losing someone's life. Understanding when to walk away from a fire is as important as knowing how to fight one. By inves ng in this aspect of your employees training, they'll be be er prepared to be able to respond to fire calmly, safely, and effec vely. November 2020 - www.visionmediahitech.com

Hospital Fires in India – Are We Ready to Handle This?  Hospital Fire Safety Audits It is mandatory for buildings in the country to conduct a fire safety audit every year (It may vary from state to state). It involves a fire safety officer visi ng a building to check whether the buildings have all the fire safety measures in place in case a mishap happens. (Though it varies from state to state in India, some states may have external cer fica on agencies or self assessments) A set of safety guidelines was published by the Na onal Disaster Management Authority for hospitals in February 2016 and yet we see the incidents of hospital fires on a daily basis. It has been observed that one of the major reasons behind hospital fires in India is an electric short circuit and improper storage of highly inflammable medical supplies. Also, in most of the major hospital fires in India, it was found that hospitals did not have safety measures like fire exits, no fire compliance cer ficate from relevant authori es and more. This indicated that these were, in a way, manmade accidents and could have been prevented.

“

 Why Do We Still Have Fire Mishaps in Hospitals?

Recently, a re broke out in a Covid-19 hospital in Ahmedabad, Gujarat claiming the lives of 8 Coronavirus patients. This isn't a solitary incident of hospital res in India claiming lives that could have been prevented had the proper norms been observed by hospitals.

There has been a clear lack of norms and safety measures when it is to do with preventing res in hospitals. According to the norms, all the buildings in India are expected to follow the National Building Code of India established by Bureau of Indian Standards.

“

November 2020 - www.safesecuremagazine.com

Most hospitals in India lack basic fire ex nguishing equipment like sprinklers and fire ex nguishers are o en old and in unusable condi on. Even the roads inside big hospitals, which should be 6 metres wide according to the NDMA guidelines, are blocked with parked vehicles. If a fire breaks out, the fire tenders cannot even enter. What makes hospital fires worse is the fact that in the event of a fire, most of the vic ms are immune-compromised, on life support or unable to move on their own. The responsibility of safeguarding hospitals and deploying fire safety measures and ensuring that the equipment like fire ex nguishers, sprinkler, hose pipes, etc is upon hospitals as well as building contractors. The onus also lies on the government bodies to make the process of NOC and other necessary compliance easier. Hospital fires in India are a serious issue that is o en neglected. It requires collec ve efforts from authori es, hospitals, contractors and architects to ensure that fire safety measures are deployed to contain the fire, as swi ly as possible. Hurdles like making sure that highly inflammable hospital supplies are stored in an appropriate manner. Hospital staff must receive specialized training to fight incidents of fire. We urge all concerned to address this with the seriousness it requires. 25

How to Survive the COVID Time Cyber Security Threats? tremendously. Fraudulent owners of such websites con nue to a ract vic ms to gather informa on from them and conduct financial fraud. There have been a lot of frauds associated with the sale of masks and sani zer, COVID treatment, and dona ons etc.

At a me when the world has transformed due to COVID, the cybercriminals found it as an opportunity for exploita on. In addi on to the exis ng a acks, new types of frauds are now spo ed in the cyber world. Almost all the companies, educa onal ins tu ons, and government func ons have gone online today and have created a void of opportuni es for such scams. Some firms with robust governance and related processes may be prepared to handle the new work condi ons and their associated external security threats. But it is not same with others, who are s ll lagging in their maturity in informa on security controls. Millions of new users, including children and adults, who previously had no access to the Internet, have now entered into the field and poten ally could be an easy target to these cyber-a acks and frauds.

So, What's New? Even if all forms of the scam are on the rise, the spam emails and other messages associated with "COVID" should be taken care of. Fraudsters send out false messages pretending as messages from governments or health centers. It is either intended to spread computer viruses, to collect personal or bank-related informa on, or to conduct financial fraud. Similarly, fraudulent emails that ask to donate to COVID pa ents and related organiza ons are rampant. Experts have found that registra on of domains using C O V I D-related names has increased 26

Some of the more serious cybercrimes are now on the rise in the form of blackmailing. There has been an increase in these kinds of campaigns, in par cular using fake profiles to carry out extor on using recorded naked videos of vic ms. The security threats to ins tu ons have reached different levels during this period. Just as workers cannot avoid using company informa on and services at home, they also pose new security threats. "Phishing" email messages, informa on breaches, and cyber-a acks can affect organiza ons' security standing. In the past, If the a ackers used bulk email spam (SPAMS) messages to target any random vic ms more targeted a acks are seen in the recent past. The criminals leverage the informa on available in the cyber world, including social media. Check your bank account regularly. The most important thing is to make sure that the money you have invested or in your account is s ll available. 3. If in doubt, immediately contact the bank and take appropriate ac on. 4. Making wri en complaints to the bank is of great importance. In some cases, we may need to file a complaint with the police. 5. Make sure your account is safe and secure by leveraging all the op ons available from the bank, including 2-factor authen ca on, SMS alerts, Call Backs for large amount transac ons etc. 6. Some mes printed statements may be required to be kept with us for records. Especially in this age of cyber security threats, this is the only way to avoid the loss of all electronic informa on. 7. Do not share bank documents or any related informa on with anyone for any reason. Whether it's a bank official (call center) or not. Many forms of fraud can take place once your personal and bank informa on has been leaked. 8. Always try to use strong passwords for online/bank accounts. If you have a bank with a token or similar technology, don't forget to enable it. In today's banking system, if there is no two-factor login, the en ty may not be giving enough importance to Cyber Security. 9. Avoid using public computers for banking ac vi es, as there could be many kinds of security vulnerabili es in those, where even your creden als can get stored in the system. 10. When you are downloading and configuring the mobile banking applica on, make sure it is the genuine one. There are many fake applica ons in the stores that could steal your creden als. 27

The First Step to Future-Proong? A Culture of Security. “Technology Always Seems to Leap Ahead, Leaving Society to Catch Up.”

Over the past decade, businesses and consumers have seen technological advancements automate business tasks and make paces toward an accessible society. With such cri cal implica ons of tech's role in our personal and working lives, though, we have seen the unfortunate results of leaving our now digitally-dependent businesses untended and unsecured. In today's connected world, human error can do just as much damage as a skilled hacker. Data has value, and cyber criminals know that. If we are to an cipate how broad-based the next digital revolu on will be, we should look to our increasingly connected working landscape-from our devices, to key func ons in our businesses. What do you need for your business to be ready, and how can you get there? It is observed that the responsibility to manage this massive change is twofold, and it begins with the ques on, 'What will this do to us?’ “It's about asking ourselves how we might be exposing people around us to unnecessary risk and to be responsible upfront”. The new analysis for any business venture should include the humanis c consequences of an innova on in ac on. 28

Security has become an undertaking for which we are all become responsible. According to the solu on to insecurity will be a change of culture, and it starts with the understanding that in order to build the robust and secure businesses urgently needed in tomorrow's landscape, there's an ini al cost. “Security shouldn't be a luxury. Buy it upfront. Organiza ons need to start adop ng an a tude of understanding-that preparedness, me spent on a disaster recovery plan, or dollars spent on cyber awareness for staff-is necessary to accommodate the changes in our cyber landscape.” To sum it up, the idea that the proac ve protec on of your organiza on's assets is an "extra cost", won't allow for the "security-first culture" that we need to adopt, promote and innovate around to foster a truly prosperous economy. These are conversa ons that we have to have with our own stakeholders and communi es as well. Widespread educa on makes for a safer society, without hindering the way we embrace innova on. “We need to incorporate that into our storytelling. They're looking to us in our myriad of business abili es for that understanding.” November 2020 - www.visionmediahitech.com

How to Keep Your Smart Home Safe from Hacking? As smart home popularity and curiosity keeps growing, ques ons around the security and privacy of connected devices are more prevalent. While smart devices can make daily tasks easier, connec ng everyday devices to the internet means there's a poten al for unwanted cyber intrusion. Security for the Internet of Things (IoT) is a hot topic, these ar cles are alarming whether you have a full-fledged smart home system or you're just beginning to research how to add connected devices to your home. It's important to first size up the security of each connected product you bring into your home. Once everything is online, take the following precau ons to keep your smart home safe If you share smart home devices with other members of your 1. Choose Devices Wisely family, make sure they each have their own account (rather As you look for smart home devices, check to see that they than passing along a shared password for one account). have security features in the first place.

2. Change Default Username As you tap through the smartphone app to set up a device, make sure it doesn't create a default username or account for you. This is especially true for wireless routers that help your smart home run smoothly, not just smart devices themselves.

4. Use Two-Factor Authentication When you enable two-factor authen ca on, it's a lot like a second password in case a hacker gets past your username and password. Even if they input the right login info, they won't get access without a special code (usually sent via text message or email). The best part is that you get a no fica on of suspicious ac vity so you can change your password.

One of the first things hackers look for is a list of default usernames, which does half of their work for them. Most smart devices don't have two-factor authen ca on, but Changing the default username gives you more breathing Google Nest, Ring, and Arlo all plan to add the feature later this room and takes you off the list of easy targets. year. Un l this feature becomes more common, it's a good idea to use a password manager with two-factor authen ca on.

3. Use Strong Passwords Don't lock your smart home behind a cheap luggage lock when it needs a deadbolt. The best thing you can do is to set up a secure password using a password manager. With a password manager, you don't have to remember dozens of passwords or hit the "Forgot your password?" link each me you log in.

5. Avoid Public Wi-Fi for Remote Access Public Wi-Fi networks are not secure because a hacker can monitor unencrypted traffic and send out malware. All online ac vity is vulnerable, including when you control smart home devices.

For quick commands, like turning on the lights at night Most password managers generate random passwords or locking your smart lock, you won't use much data, that are difficult for hackers to crack, even with the best so it's be er to use your cellular plan instead of a public tech. WHAT ARE BIOMETRICS?

1. What are Biometrics? At the most basic, biometrics can be best explained by breaking down the word: bio, as in biological; and metric, as in measurement. That is to say, Biometrics Are Biological Measurements. Thanks to the unique nature of many of these measurements, biometrics are par cularly suited for iden fica on. Fingerprints, facial measurements, the pa erns that your veins make and even the way you walk all of these characteris cs and more are unique to you and you only. At FindBiometrics, we focus on the technologies that measure biometrics and apply them to iden ty verifica on. Some mes that means proving to a computer that you are you and are allowed to access your email, other mes it means law enforcement officers uncovering wanted crooks. In every case biometrics allow for a high level of efficiency and assurance when it comes to every transac on dealing with iden ty and creden aling.

2. What are the Characteristics Measured by Biometric Technology? Some biometric measurements are easy to see and others are not. Those that are on the surface facial, iris, fingerprint – can be measured from a high resolu on image with an algorithm that compares physical details. There are also what are some mes called Invisible Biometrics: essen ally any type of unique biological quality that is not measured visually, usually because they rely on biological processes rather than outward appearance. 30

Voiceprint biometrics, for instance, which rely on the unique sound of a human’s voice, measure a trait that combines the uniqueness of your lungs, larynx and other vocal organs. Unique EKG readings similarly verify an iden ty by measuring a human heart via the user’s wrist. Invisible biometrics can be further refined to a subcategory of behavioral iden fica on. The way that you interact with connected devices (computers, tablets, smartphones) can be measured and a profile can be derived from the resul ng data. New so wares can then compare the way you usually type, use a mouse or scroll on a page with ac ve inputs to see if malware or a fraudster has hijacked your device.

3. How does biometric authentication work? Biometrics involve comparison. Whether visible, invisible or behavioral, biometric authen ca on technology centers on the capture of a measurement and comparing it to a previously derived string of numbers called a template. A template is not a whole image, but rather a code that describes certain unique features of said image within the context of a specific biometric technology. Through the administra ve process called enrollment, in which a biometric is ini ally scanned into a system, a template is derived and stored either on a server behind a firewall or in a secure element on a device (like an iPhone). A er enrollment, any me a biometric is scanned into a system in a request for access, the measurement of the November 2020 - www.visionmediahitech.com

presented biometric are compared to those described by the template. If there is a match, then access is granted, if there is not then it is denied. Of key importance in the case of biometric authen ca on is the fact that templates are not whole images. A compromised database of biometric templates is not the same as a security breach resul ng in the the of passwords, PINs or account numbers. A template can’t be reverse engineered, but if it could be, an ideal biometric system should require a live biometric be presented for access in the first place.

4. What’s the Difference Between Biometric Authentication and Biometric Identication? Authen ca on, as described above, involves matching one submi ed biometric feature and matching it with a specific authorized template. When it comes to iden fica on, rather than looking to issue a posi ve creden al, the aim of biometric technology is to simply find a match within a database. For instance: the FBI’s Interstate Photo System allows law enforcement officials to scan biometrics and have them compared to those associated with wanted criminals. Biometric Iden fica on also has applica ons in iden fying characteris cs held by groups of people. Some facial recogni on technology can scan the faces of a large passing popula on and provide es mates on its demographics like average age and gender. In general, a good way to dis nguish between biometric iden fica on and biometric

authen ca on is to look at what is being achieved with the matching. Is a user reques ng access to a secure physical or digital process? That is authen ca on. Is the person using the technology trying to discover something about a scanned individual? That is iden fica on.

5. What are the Ideal Uses for Biometric Technology? There are a huge number of applica ons for biometric technology and more are being invented constantly. Biometric authen ca on can be used to provide be erthan-password security to online accounts or personal hardware (like phones, tablets or PCs). Biometrics are increasingly being used to authen cate financial transac ons, especially payments. There are even applica ons in healthcare that help doctors and clinicians keep be er pa ent health records. Biometrics help law enforcement agents catch criminals and are making our airports more convenient; they help keep lunch lines moving quickly in schools and make sure no students get lost on field trips; biometrics are making our smartphones more usable and might be the key to helping users seamlessly interface with the growing Internet of Things. Biometric Technology can be used for everything from the everyday to the stuff of yesterday’s science fic on. work fine, but finding a secure Wi-Fi network is ideal if you don't have unlimited data. If you must use an unsecured public Wi-Fi network, use a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to encrypt your data so watching eyes can't read it. Check out our VPN reviews to learn more.

One of the biggest advantages of smart home devices is that they talk to each other, but this can work against your security.

6. Check App Permissions

• When you get rid of a device, or it stops working, make sure to unlink it from the rest of your smart home devices so a hacker can't use it as a backdoor into your system in the future. • If you get a new smartphone, it's worth removing the smart home apps from your old phone.

Some smart home apps collect data about how you use them. Look into what it's gathering and deny app permissions if you don't use specific features like loca on data and Bluetooth connec vity.

Whether or not you choose to protect your smart home on the digital front is up to you. But we think the extra effort is worth it.

ARTICLE Consider the following when using your Mobile Phone It is not only the choice of phone, but how you use it that is important when you want to control the amount of radia on you are exposed to. Here you will find a few simple ps that can considerably reduce radia on and therefore also health risks.

Use a Handsfree Set The further away from your body the phone is, the less radia on you are exposed to. Using a hands-free set is the easiest way to radically reduce the amount of radia on you are exposed to if you use a mobile phone.

Hold it at the Bottom By covering large areas of the phone with your hand, you reduce its ability to send and receive signals. The phone then increases its power and transmits stronger radia on to compensate this. So hold the phone as far down as possible, so it can operate at low power.

36

Get in the Best Position You can see the signal recep on strength in the display. When recep on is good, the phone reduces power and radia on. If recep on is poor, the phone uses maximum power and radia on.

Don’t Talk Too Long and Use Regular Phone if Possible The radia on you are exposed to is directly related to the me you spend talking on your phone. For linger calls it is safer “and cheaper” to call from a regular phone.

Hazardous Aeas of Use  Don’t use a mobile phone while driving a car. Stop at a safe place and talk.  Don’t use your mobile phone in places where there is a lot of electrical equipment, such as hospitals and aircra .  Don’t bathe with your mobile phone.  Don’t let small children talk on your mobile phone for long periods. They are more suscep ble than adults.

Intelligent Building Looks by Arindam Bhadra

Over the past 20 years, many different buildings have been labeled as intelligent. However, the applica on of intelligence in buildings has yet to deliver its true poten al. For the last three decades, the so-called intelligent buildings (IBs) were only a conceptual framework for the representa on of future buildings. However, today, IBs are rapidly becoming inherent cons tuents of influen al policies for design and development of future buildings. Undeniably, urbanized areas are expected to be highly influenced by IBs in order to promote smart growth, green development and healthy environments (Hollands 2008; Choon et al. 2011; Berardi 2013a). Various studies have tried to map the evolu on of the concept of IBs (e.g. ClementsCroome 1997, 2004; Buckman, Mayfield, and Beck 2014). In essence, the emergence of informa on and communica on technology (ICT), together with the development of automa on, embedded sensors, and other high-tech systems are key elements in IBs (Kroner 1997). "For commercial developments, intelligentbuilding technologies can result in above-market rents, improved reten on, higher occupancy rates, and lower opera ng expenses," says Arindam Bhadra president and founder SSA Integrate. Technology is changing what's possible for buildings. With the advent of smart building technology, hea ng, cooling, electrical, ligh ng, fire/life safety, and other systems need monitoring and intercommunica on for op mized efficiency and opera on.

Most Infrastructure Systems deployed in today's buildings are inherently "smart," with self-contained logical control that includes embedded performance op miza on and self-diagnos c algorithmic features. While it is understood that intercommunica on of these systems provides tremendous opportunity in op mizing building opera on efficiency, it is necessary for the engineer to think beyond the Building Automa on System (BAS) as the link to systems interoperability. With sophis ca on comes the need for a BAS and building controls that allow for nearly seamless opera on of this interrelated equipment. Smart buildings and smart ci es integrate the design of the infrastructure, building and facility systems, communica ons, business systems, and technology solu ons that contribute to sustainability and opera onal efficiency. Today's truly intelligent buildings interoperate on a common converged network where data is shared through an open-source pla orm. Middleware collects, analyzes, and communicates in a two-way fashion with the smart systems to best op mize the building response and enhance the occupant experience. To do this effec vely and efficiently, the engineer must bring together and align more stakeholders than in the past.

ARTICLE The BAS, with control over the building's HVAC systems, has long been viewed as the core smart system in a commercial building. However, modern construc on contains many more inherently smart devices and subsystems. Electromechanical mers for irriga on and ligh ng control have given way to microprocessors with real- me clocks and the ability to network together. Racks of clicking elevator-control relays have been replaced by robust and reliable programmable logic controllers. Mul ple networks crisscross the building, each one connec ng its specific group of devices, such as surveillance cameras, card readers, or fire alarm ini a ng and no fica on devices. Audio/Video Systems have grown from stand-alone racks of analog-source electronics to building wide distribu on of digital content. Ever more stringent building energy codes essen ally mandate that networked microprocessor ligh ng control systems be installed instead of an array of interconnected sensors and power packs. Smart features-such as microprocessor control, the ability to network together, and some form of user interface and configura on so ware-can now be found in irriga on systems, plumbing equipment, all sorts of submeters (including electricity, natural gas, domes c water, and hydronic energy), and even fire ex nguishers and exit signs. The next genera on of smart devices, coming to market under the Internet of Things (IoT) banner, promises the next stage in the evolu on of building performance monitoring with wireless communica on, low-power or completely ba ery-free opera on, low cost, small form factor, and a wide range of esoteric applica ons. These IoT devices frequently report to the vendor's cloud-based applica on for processing, analysis, repor ng, and user interface. Google's $3.2 billion purchase of Nest is a clear indica on of the bullish outlook tech firms have for future investment in building technology and the convergence of building systems and the Informa on Technology (IT) department. Benets of Integration Smart devices and IoT technologies are the conduits to capture be er and more relevant building data; however, if that data remains solely contained within the boundary of the original smart building system-BAS, ligh ng control system, electrical power monitoring system, ver cal transport system, etc. the power of the collected data cannot be fully realized. These independent "silos" of smart devices are, at best, inefficient to install, manage, and maintain. Each is typically sold and installed by a separate contractor, each is operated or monitored by a unique so ware system, and the massive collec on of disparate specialty devices makes it all but impossible for the average facility operator to become adequately trained to maintain most of it properly. 38

However, if these specialty devices become enabled to share their data through an opensource data pla orm, smart building systems become collec vely intelligent and their effec veness increases exponen ally. When elevators, HVAC systems, ligh ng controls, and other systems are integrated with intelligent building pla orms, they move beyond the collec on of data to allowing communica on across the systems to foster efficiency. Strong building data is the founda on of the intelligent building pla orm, which turns the collected data into building intelligence that can be applied to foster smarter use of the built environment. Two generic examples take advantage of common scheduling and occupancy/vacancy programming across these systems, as well as provide occupants with more control over their space. 1. Example No. 1: HVAC zones within the building can be reset to a "standby" condi on during normal working hours either by me schedule or when unoccupied as sensed by a zone occupancy/vacancy sensor. During this "standby" mode, the associated H VAC equipment serving the respec ve zone will revert to an intermediate, relaxed temperature setpoint and the ligh ng can be reduced or turned off completely-all reducing energy consump on. 2. Example No. 2: During off-hours, should an occupant (or occupants) enter the space, the elevator controls can signal the respec ve zone for which the occupant is des ned and the associated HVAC and ligh ng controls-just in that zone-can be automa cally ac vated to temporary occupancy. Once the occupant is in the zone, the occupancy/vacancy controls will adjust the HVAC and ligh ng controls as the occupant moves through or changes zones. The real power of each smart device gets unlocked when incorporated into an intelligent building so ware pla orm. The tradi onal approach to integra ng systems has been to expand the HVACcentric BAS, but there are prac cal limits to what a building management system can achieve. Due to the wide variety of devices and applica ons for integra on in a modern building, it is becoming more common to forgo the tradi onal approach November 2020 - www.visionmediahitech.com

The tradi onal building management system (i.e., temperature control system) remains an integral part of the mechanical systems. The building management system is specified within the mechanical division of project specifica ons and is typically provided by a subcontractor to the mechanical contractor. In similar ways, ligh ng controls are specified within the electrical division and provided by the electrical subcontractor, and plumbing controls are specified within the plumbing division and provided by the plumbing contractor, etc. Key Features of an Intelligent Building Software Platform are:  Mul ple protocol capability to allow flexibility in procurement of the various subsystems and devices  A common object/data model to encourage the normaliza on of the assortment of protocols and subsystems into a consistent framework  Open-source so ware to enable so ware development to extend the core features  Open distribu on to ensure that the owner/end user will have maximum future flexibility when expanding or maintaining the system  A suite of so ware features that match up with owner requirements, which could include advanced visualiza on/user interface, dashboards targe ng managers and occupants, fault detec on and diagnos cs, energy analy cs, advanced repor ng capabili es, and performance op miza on capabili es. November 2020 - www.safesecuremagazine.com

Stakeholders The best condi ons for success when crea ng an intelligent building occur when the goals of the diverse stakeholders can be aligned with intelligent building goals at the project outset. Just as it is necessary for a project team to find agreement on basic architectural programming details like loca on, size, height, and cost before any detailed construc on drawings can be dra ed, the "size and shape" of the intelligent pla orm must be agreed upon before any meaningful design can begin. Unfortunately, current prac ce is o en to skip an ini al programming phase with the stakeholders at the table. Instead, each subsystem design engineer or design-build contractor creates a solu on in a vacuum or with minimal coordina on between disciplines, and the opportunity to develop the most value at the lowest cost is lost. Much later in construc on, as the various stakeholders come to the table, features get added in a patchwork manner, leading to higher costs and unfortunate compromises that result in a system with diminished effec veness. Avoiding this situa on requires pulling together people from the organiza on who may be unfamiliar with the design and construc on process and who may have never before been asked to envision the technology features of a building, and conduc ng early workshops or design charre es. Quite a bit of educa on o en is required at these early mee ngs, because many team members will need an understanding of what is possible. The poten al posi ve results can be huge. When the team of tradi onal early-stage par cipants, such as architects, engineers, and general contractors, are all aligned around a set of minimum requirements for intelligence, the intelligence becomes a part of the DNA of the project. There are a limited number of stakeholders for a tradi onal building management system, including opera ng/engineering staff, building-management staff, and perhaps energy-management staff. In an intelligent building paradigm, there are many more stakeholders that should become involved, because an intelligent building is able to deliver benefits across a much wider spectrum. Of course, the specific involvement on any project will depend 39

ARTICLE greatly on the individual experiences and expecta ons of each stakeholder, from end user/occupant, to IT and network technicians, to corporate management-level execu ves, to regulatory compliance officers. Some of the stakeholders in a modern building may be new to the idea of an intelligent building, and may be accustomed to performing their job func ons without real- me so ware. For these stakeholders, addi onal conversa ons will be necessary to educate them and to encourage ac ve involvement in the project. A Brief Summary of the Benets of Intelligent Building Strategy Implementation:  Improved opera onal efficiency/use. This class of stakeholders (facili es manager, opera ons manager) is focused on keeping the building func oning on a day-to-day basis. Inwardly, they are concerned with occupant sa sfac on, ease of opera on, access to cri cal systems informa on, and produc vity of the maintenance staff. The visibility provided by the intelligent building pla orm allows a real- me and more organized response to maintenance concerns, making their jobs easier and improving their ability to keep the occupants comfortable and happy. These stakeholders are concerned with the produc vity of the non-staff occupants in the building and strive for op mal building comfort. They want access to informa on about the effec veness of the building's spaces and how integra on can improve produc vity.  Reduced u lity consump on. Beyond improved maintenance prac ces that can reduce the amount of wasted energy, the aggrega on and analysis of data from devices, such as power meters alongside HVAC controls, within the intelligent building pla orm can allow a facility to predict its u lity demand and implement more focused energy-management strategies to maximize efficiencies and minimize costs. Facili es can reduce their dependency on the power u lity grid when these strategies include the installa on of onsite renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind. The power of integra on is ul mately op mized when this intelligence from the building pla orm is used to drive a net zero facility. 40

 Improved financial performance. Expanding from the objec ves of those stakeholders concerned with opera onal efficiency, knowing the financial effects of opera onal inefficiencies can foster more informed decisions. More efficient responses to opera ng problems can lower the maintenance costs and inevitably promote a more op mal, therefore, more energyefficient and cost-effec ve opera on. Customized reports comparing financial metrics across the en re enterprise also can be provided to the financial stakeholders who are interested in how the intelligent building systems are impac ng the company's financial metrics and the bo om line revenue/profitability.  Enhanced occupant experience. These stakeholders (End User, Owner, Facili es Manager, Opera ons Manager) are concerned with the comfort and safety of the building occupants. Many studies have associated a strong link between occupants' comfort and produc vity levels. These stakeholders also want the intelligent building to help disseminate messages during an emergency, including pre-ac on and warnings. Addi onally, they are interested in how the building's intelligence can be leveraged to maintain proper access control and improve emergency communica ons as well as tenant/employee a rac on and reten on.  Sustainability. Sustainability stakeholders are concerned with energy and water efficiency, u lity op miza on, and how to reduce emissions and save resources. These stakeholders will want to show performance data from throughout the intelligent building in lobby displays to promote the building's sustainability ini a ves.  Compe ve advantage and value. When increased efficiencies, lower resource consump on, and posi ve financial performance are coupled with an engaged, empowered, and seamless occupant experience, real estate value and compe ve advantages are created. A building where systems are integrated and converged is capable of capturing embedded opportuni es that create value through both con nuously improving performance and the ability to respond to marketplace desires and demands.  Pres ge/Recogni on. Pres ge and recogni on are mo va ons for mul ple stakeholders who want to create a high-profile image for the building, company, and/or community, showcasing the company's commitment and dedica on to all occupants, visitors, and investors. Visualizing Success Strong visualiza on tools organize and present the building data so that stakeholders can be er understand the building to make necessary adjustments for op miza on. Individual dashboards for each of the building's stakeholders can be built to concentrate on targeted data sets. For example, the day-to-day building operator will need the most inclusive dashboard that features an overall picture of the facility as well as certain granular-level sta s cs specific to each facility, while the financial stakeholder will want to know how the day-to-day numbers play out in the overall budget. ARTICLE How a Smart Building May Function If a building is not performing to its designed standard, than a smart building should be able to gather informa on as to why and adapt to perform differently in the future. This 'adaptableness' should span across the four main principles of building progression. See below Figure.  Intelligence: the methods by which building opera on informa on is gathered and how to respond  Enterprise: the methods by which a building uses informa on that is collected to improve occupant and building performance  Materials: the building's physical form  Control: the interac on between the occupants and the building Building Management Pillar

Example 1

Example 2

Enterprise

Combining hardware, and so ware to overcome fragmented non-proprietary, legacy systems.

Integra ng BMS and real- me systems with smart analy cs to predict building faults before the BMS picks up an alarm.

Materials

Based on occupancy counts, a smart building could close or open zones during periods of low or high occupancy.

Adap ng to future climate condi ons by replacing features that can account for change.

Control

Warning occupants of the likely temperature of their building before they set off from home

Using real- me environmental informa on to enable occupants to see what part of the building suits their preferences best.

Cost and Budget Issues With all the features and benefits that have been described, why are more buildings not incorpora ng the truly intelligent, converged building system approach? One common mispercep on is that it must cost more. If the intelligent concept is an a erthought and is applied as an overlay late in the building design process, there indeed could be a budgetary impact. However, if the intelligent building concept is a key ini a ve considered from the project incep on and supported by the project owners and stakeholders, the individual smart systems can be planned and designed to minimize-and even remove-the budgetary impact. Early involvement allows the project to eliminate common redundancies, such as mul ple parallel networks, mul ple so ware systems configured to create separate user interfaces, and even mul ple electrical installa on subcontractors. Early involvement also enables the many granular design decisions to be made in alignment with the overall intelligent goals. This can result in the elimina on of costly details with marginal incremental benefit, with a corresponding budget shi into items that deliver maximum value. At the same me, it can prevent design- me gaps in the planning of smart systems that are sufficient to a ain the intelligent goals, reducing costly last-minute change orders. November 2020 - www.safesecuremagazine.com

As an example, a recent client engaged Environmental Systems Design as a partner for the design of its new headquarters facility early in the project. This client recognized building occupants have high expecta ons in regards to their modern built environment. This client commi ed to providing their employees, colleagues, and customers a heightened experience in terms of efficiency, comfort, safety, and increased produc vity through the implementa on of the intelligent building concepts. Environmental Systems Design was tasked with developing, designing, and delivering an intelligent building pla orm. Early involvement, in-depth coordina on across all trades, and unwavering client support has led to an intelligent building design that will be implemented in a cost-neutral way when compared with the ini al budgetary line item costs for the individual mechanical, electrical, plumbing (MEP), and associated systems. The intelligent building design will integrate BAS (HVAC temperature control), an intelligent ligh ng control system, ver cal transport systems, and building metering and submetering onto one common, converged pla orm where fault detec on, diagnos cs, building analy cs, and informa onal dashboards are applied to deliver on the efficiency, comfort, safety, and produc vity ini a ves iden fied and agreed upon by the project stakeholders. The demand for building intelligence through a converged pla orm is being recognized by building owners and operators as a primary and future-oriented component of mee ng market expecta ons, crea ng value, and maintaining a compe ve advantage. The intelligent facility of today and tomorrow will be strikingly different even from that of the current, highperformance building. While both feature smart MEP systems and the latest equipment op miza on, the intelligent building will stand out behind the scenes for its ability to collect data from each disparate system, collaborate it into dashboards for individual stakeholders, and-most importantly-to use the collected data to impact the building posi vely and enable con nuous improvements. How to Write an Evacuation Plan for Gas Stations The Na onal Fire and Protec on Associa on es mates that in every year an average of 5,020 fires and explosions occurred at gas sta ons. That means about one in every 13 gas sta ons experienced an emergency situa on and underscores the need for every sta on to have an evacua on plan. To be truly effec ve an evacua on plan must be incorporated into an overall emergency plan, tailored to the needs of each specific business. General guidelines can, however, provide a good star ng point for the evacua on por on of the plan.  Identify Evacuation Emergencies Iden fy emergency situa ons for which full or par al evacua on is either required or is the best solu on. In general, a full evacua on scenario involves a risk that must be dealt with urgently and immediately to prevent injuries up to and including loss of life. Examples include open flames, visual evidence of sparks or sta c electricity in outdoor areas surrounding gas pumps, significant gas spillage or an explosion. Incidents inside the building, including threats of violence, personal injury or robbery may require either the reloca ng occupants to unaffected areas of the building or evacua ng occupants when doing so is possible.  Create an Evacuation Map Create a detailed interior and exterior site map or use an exis ng floor plan to use as an evacua on plan visual aid. Highlight the loca ons of both underground gas storage tanks and above-ground pumps. Also, highlight the loca ons of everyday and emergency exits located within the building. Map out evacua on routes, then decide on and note the November 2020 - www.safesecuremagazine.com

loca ons of post-evacua on assembly points for employees and customers. Iden fy and note the loca ons of fixed and portable emergency response systems and equipment used to signal an emergency evacua on situa on or use during the evacua on. These include onsite and off-site alarm systems, safety and shutdown switches on pumps and other equipment, fire ex nguishers and water-drenching or foam flooding equipment's.  Write Evacuation Procedures Dra detailed evacua on procedures for each iden fied emergency situa on. Procedures should clearly and succinctly iden fy ac ons in a step-by-step fashion, leaving absolutely no room for personal interpreta on. Delegate procedural responsibili es to ensure the shi supervisor isn't responsible for performing the bulk of evacua on procedures. Detail ac ons employees should carry out to contact emergency services, get customers out of the building and list any ac ons employees must take before exi ng the building. Include a list of emergency service contacts and personnel trained to administer emergency first-aid.  Conduct Evacuation Training Training is vital to successfully carrying out an emergency evacua on. Review the evacua on plan as part of newhire orienta on. Conduct periodic training drills focusing on different evacua on situa ons as part of ongoing emergency training. Invite a representa ve from the gas supplier to par cipate in safety training. Consider invi ng emergency service personnel such as representa ves from the local fire department to demonstrate safety procedures to employees or as a community service, to interested persons from the general public. 47

The safest method of dealing with fires is to take steps to prevent them. The leading causes of property fires are faulty wiring and power outlets, yet these are also arguably the most easily avoided fires. This ar cle covers some basic steps in Fire Preven on and looks at the importance of Fire Safety Awareness.  Fire Safety Awareness - Prevention Check all the cords in your premises for signs of fraying or wear and tear, replacing any damaged wires that you find. Make use of surge protectors, especially on high voltage electronics, to prevent them catching fire during power spikes. You should also avoid placing rugs or other coverings over wires wherever possible, and otherwise not pinching them. The kitchen is the place where most people will imagine fires star ng in, and there are also steps you can take to make it a safer place. Built up grease or residue can ignite, so frequently cleaning cooking appliances is a vital step to take in reducing fire risks. Unfortunately, the easiest way to prevent kitchen fires is the most o en neglected way; never leaving pans or pots una ended. Simply keeping an eye on what you're cooking can be the greatest way to prevent a devasta ng accident. 52

 Fire Safety Awareness Prevention in Residential or Care Homes In residen al or care homes another u lity that is o en the ca u s e o f fi re s i s t h e d r ye r. The ps for electric wires apply to dryers, but they also have their own special requirements too. Cleaning out the lint filter a er every load, in addi on to cleaning any debris that collects beneath or behind the dryer, can prevent the dryer from overhea ng and catching alight. You should also clean the dryer vent out regularly. The final main cause of residen al fires (and office blocks) comes from hea ng systems. If the premises s ll use a classic fireplace, having the chimney cleaned on a regular basis is vital to allow the heat and ashes to rise naturally and thus prevent a fire. You should also only use the correct fuel; damp wood, cardboard, trees, paper, and boxes are all fuels that can easily spark chimney fires. If you want to use a pellet or wood stove, then make sure you either follow the installa on instruc ons to the le er or have it installed by a professional. If you choose to use a space heater, then ensure it is away from furniture or other flammable items, ensuring you never turn it on if you can smell gas.  If a Workplace or Residential Fire Breaks Out When a fire breaks out, the very first thing to do surprisingly is not to call 999 as many would think. Your priority is to alert everyone in the building. If it is a pa ents private home, then shout and gather everyone together. If you are in a public building or workplace, sound the fire alarm. Leave the building calmly and quickly using the designated escape routes. All businesses should have a fire safety checklist and escape plan.

November 2020 - www.visionmediahitech.com

If leaving a clients home, the exit should normally be the entrance to the house, so it is important in advance to clear this area of any possible blockages; having access to a second exit could be an op on should the primary exit be blocked. When escaping a burning building, do so quickly. Don't go back for any valuables. If there is heavy smoke, and the pa ent is well enough to get on all fours encourage them to crawl to ensure they stay below the smoke line as it rises. Check every door with the back of your hand before opening it, if it is warm, there is a chance that fire has spread to that room. In this instance do not open the door.  Fire Safety Awareness Infogram Fire Safety Awareness What to Do in a Fire?

Once you leave a room, you should make sure to close any doors behind you, as this will slow the spread of fire. Always try and stay with another enabled person if possible - since that way you can guide each other and people will know you are missing quicker if you get stuck. Should your clothes catch fire, then the simple advice of stop, drop, and roll is the best op on since this reduces the damage that will be caused to your face and is an efficient way to smother out the flames. Hopefully, whatever building you're in will have an appropriate fire ex nguisher. All places of work and care homes should have these as standard. While anyone can use a fire ex nguisher, it is important to know what you are doing with them. If you have never used one before do not waste me trying to operate one unless absolutely necessary. Different types of fire require different ex nguishers to put a fire out safely. For example, you should never use a water-based ex nguisher on an electrical fire. If you know what is burning, then check the ex nguisher, as it will display what type of fire it is to be used with. If you are in a workplace or care home that has an elevator do not be tempted to use when a fire has been discovered. Always use the stairs. Finally, once you are safely outside, call Fire department. If anyone is missing, do not go in under any circumstances. Inform the fire-fighters who is missing and give them details of any disabili es they may have as well as last known loca on. Returning to the property puts yourself and the firefighters at further risk when they could be helping others.

Safety Procedures at Work Workplace Safety Procedures are designed to keep employees, visitors and customers safe while helping to reduce the stress associated with the work area. Company management should take the time to develop safety procedures at work that get the entire staff involved in making company safety a priority.  Reporting Process One of the ways to help get employees and management involved together in the safety procedures of your company is to implement a repor ng process. When employees see poten al safety problems, they should be trained to avoid trying to handle the problems on their own. Employees should be aware of the safety repor ng process, and report safety issues immediately. When the staff knows how to report safety concerns, it will keep everyone more vigilant on looking out for problems. This creates a culture of safety within the company that can help the company maintain a safe work environment.

54

 Evacuation When an emergency happens within your facility, such as a fire or explosion, it is important for everyone in the company to know the evacua on procedure. Develop an evacua on procedure that covers everyone in the company. Point out the closest emergency exit to each department, and develop a set of procedures for the safe evacua on of the building. Those procedures would include what p e rs o n a l i te m s to b r i n g w h e n evacua ng, the route each person should take and how to report to a member of the management team once an employee is outside the building. Post evacua on maps

throughout the building, and check emergency exits regularly to make sure they remain accessible.  First Aid Kit Well-stocked first aid kits should be a part of any company safety program. Place first aid kits in each work room, and have a small first aid kit in every manager's office. A first aid kit should contain sterilized bandages, medical adhesive tape, headache medica on, an bacterial ointment, surgical gauze and over-the-counter pain medica on. It should also include any site-specific emergency items, such as an eye wash for areas that use potent chemicals.

A Safety Audit Checklist for Manufacturing  Emergency Procedures Check fire exits and other emergency evacua on routes for appropriate signage. Emergency exits should be clearly labeled, and exit signs should be illuminated at all mes. Check to see that evacua on procedures are posted in high traffic areas, and that emergency equipment such as fire ex nguishers, first aid kits and automa c defibrillators are stocked, visible and in working order.

 Clean Work Areas

Manufacturing Companies face a wide range of dangerous situa ons that can result in serious injury to employees and significant financial liability to the company. Because of this, comprehensive safety management programs are a must in any manufacturing se ng. Guidelines set forth by the Occupa onal Safety and Health Administra on (OSHA) can provide a solid founda on, but organiza ons can s ll benefit from producing their own safety audit checklists tailored to their specific risks and exposures.

 Hazardous Chemicals Check to ensure that all hazardous chemicals and supplies are stored in designated areas, and that they are clearly labeled. Keep Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) on hand; these sheets list each hazardous compound used in your opera ons, the risks of each and the proper response to various types of exposure.

 Protective Equipment Ensure that all staff has access to appropriate personal protec ve equipment, like goggles, ear plugs, gloves and face masks. Make sure that all employees wear appropriate protec ve equipment at all mes by including these items in your workplace rules and discipline programs. November 2020 - www.safesecuremagazine.com

Make sure that all work areas are clean and free of obstruc ons. Garbage and debris should not be le lying around; spills should be sec oned off and cleaned as soon as possible, and "wet floor" signs should be placed around recent spills. Cleaning supplies and warning signs should be easily accessible from all work areas, and all employees should be aware of their role in keeping work areas clean.

 Employee Training Audit new-hire and current-employee training programs regularly to ensure that the safety component remains relevant and comprehensive. Include training on the iden fica on, repor ng, and preven on of hazards, as well as responses to accidents and emergencies. Examine employee training test scores to ensure that this informa on is being relayed effec vely.

 Job Process Safety Analyze individual jobs to spot possible causes of injury. Design jobs to reduce prolonged repe ve mo ons as much as possible. Ensure that adequate hazard signage is present in all work areas. Check ven la on and air-filtra on systems to ensure a healthy atmosphere in work areas. Inspect all vehicles and motoroperated machinery regularly, and keep inspec on reports on hand. 55
