Institutions around the globe have switched to online modes of working while global mobility has come to a standstill. The biggest enemy of mankind arrogance has disappeared giving way to humility and patience. Even confirmed atheists have turned theists overnight. The world has been in pandemic mode for a year and a half. The virus continues to spread at a slow burn; intermittent lockdowns are the new normal. An approved vaccine offers six months of protection, but international deal-making has slowed its distribution. An estimated 250 million people have been infected worldwide, and 1.75 million are dead. Scenarios such as this one imagine how the COVID-19 pandemic might play out. Around the world, epidemiologists are constructing short- and long-term projections as a way to prepare for, and potentially mitigate, the spread and impact of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. Although their forecasts and timelines vary, modellers agree on two things: COVID-19 is here to stay, and the future depends on a lot of unknowns, including whether people develop lasting immunity to the virus, whether seasonality affects its spread, and perhaps most importantly the choices made by governments and individuals. A lot of places are unlocking, and a lot of places aren’t. We don’t really yet know what’s going to happen. The future will very much depend on how much social mixing resumes, and what kind of prevention we do. Recent models and evidence from successful lockdowns suggest that behavioral changes can reduce the spread of COVID-19 if most, but not necessarily all, people comply.

CO2 Gas Hazards Carbon Dioxide (CO2) is a hazard throughout the brewing process, right through to packaging and bottling as prior to filling, beer bottles are purged with CO2 to remove air and protect the taste against oxidation. As CO2 is heavier than air, it collects at the bottom of containers and confined spaces such as tanks and cellars and can even spill out of fermenting tanks and sink to the brewery floor, where it forms deadly, invisible pockets. It is recommended to have a fixed gas detection system to alert people to the danger.

Dangers of CO2 Carbon Dioxide (CO2) occurs naturally in the atmosphere at a rate of 400 parts per million (ppm). It is odourless, colourless and tasteless. If levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere increase too much, it can be dangerous. An increase of CO2 to 30,000ppm, can result in a person having deeper breathing, reduced hearing, headaches and an increase in blood pressure and pulse rate. BMC Proposes Low-Rise Buildings to Get Self-Certification for Fire Safety Compliance For High Rises, NOC from the MFB will, However, Remain Mandatory. A Draft Policy has been Submitted to Municipal Commissioner I S Chahal for Administrative Approval. As per the Fire Safety Act, if a residential building does not have proper fire safety installations, the society or builder can be prosecuted under Sections 6, 7 and 8 of the legislation. In addition to the firefighting operation in the city, the fire brigade handles complaints of tree (or branch) fall during monsoon as many as 5,000 to 6,000 such incidents are reported each year. On average, the department also receives 10,000 calls for bird and animal rescue annually. The BMC has inked an agreement with these companies to buy electricity at the rate of Rs 4.75 per unit for the next 25 years.

TO LESSEN the non-firefighting responsibilities of the Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB), the civic body has proposed new low-rise buildings in the city to obtain self-certification for fire safety compliance. Under the proposed policy, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials said, buildings up to 30-metre high (roughly eight stories) or low-rise buildings will no longer need to obtain a no-objection certificate from the MFB to get an Occupation Certificate (OC). Instead, builders or architects can get a fire safety compliance audit done by a third party or an empanelled private agency with the civic body and submit its report to the building proposals department. For high rises, NOC from the MFB will, however, remain mandatory. A draft policy has been submitted to Municipal Commissioner I S Chahal for administrative approval. Currently, for new or under-construction buildings, MFB issues a “provisional fire compliance certificate” after builders or architects submit the plan, including all fire safety measures. Once the construction is completed, a joint inspection is conducted by officials from the building proposal department, health officer and fire brigade. All the data from the inspection is then fed to software and an auto-generated date is given. And within 24 hours, the MFB has to give a remark on the inspection. 26

To reduce the burden of administrative tasks and improve the operation of the fire brigade, various committees have made recommendations, however, none of them has been implemented so far. After four senior fire department officials were killed in a blaze at Kalbadevi in 2015, a fact-finding committee had stated: “Firemen should focus on fire-fighting and fire prevention, and not be burdened by administrative tasks.” In 2011, the BMC had decided to form a cell of 99 fire officers to only inspect high-rises and check their fire safety systems. The plan never materialised. After the Kalbadevi fire, the idea of a separate cell was mooted but failed to take off. In 2017, after 14 people died in the Kamala Mills fire, for the third time top officials discussed a separate cell in the fire brigade to handle non-firefighting responsibilities. Once again, it remained in the discussion stage. “The separate cell plan has been revised and now a fire brigade official is assigned to each of the 24 wards to handle the fire-safety inspections,” a senior fire official said. Fire Department Proposes Tech Upgrades, New Stations to Reduce Response Time In a Bid to Reduce Response Time, Officials have Proposed to Install GPS Trackers in all Fire Tenders and Link them to the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority’s (GMDA) Integrated Command Control Centre. In a bid to reduce response time, officials have proposed to install GPS trackers in all fire tenders and link them to the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority’s (GMDA) integrated command control centre. Further, the proposal to set up four fire stations to provide proper coverage to newer sectors has also moved forward. Officials of the fire department and GMDA said that this would notify the command centre about the ground situation and in case a fire tender is stuck in a jam, another vehicle could be sent via a different route so that there is no delay in response. “Often, our fire tenders get stuck in snarls and hence, get delayed in reaching the site of a fire. A tracker would help give us this information on a real-time basis and we can accordingly send a fresh batch of fire tenders through less congested routes,” said IS Kashyap, assistant divisional fire safety officer. The fire department has 25 fire tenders located at its fire stations in Sector 29, Sector 37, Bhim Nagar, and Udyog Vihar. Kashyap said that the matter of making all fire tenders GPS-enabled was discussed in a meeting with GMDA officials last week. “The matter was discussed with both representatives of the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) as well as the fire department. We want it to operate on similar lines as the police control room, which relays all complaints or distress calls to the nearest PCR vehicle. We want to build a similar system, where the official at the command control centre relays any fire incident to the nearest fire station or fire tender,” said a senior GMDA official who had attended the meeting. The official said that the proposal is currently at a nascent stage and its outlines are being chalked out. “For this system to function, we will have to create or make alterations to the existing software at the command centre. We will figure out the best way to make it operational in the coming weeks and subsequently, draft a comprehensive project model,” the official cited above said. Besides the GMDA, Kashyap also said that the state government is planning on making all fire tenders GPS-enabled across Haryana. “Soon after the GMDA meeting, we learnt that the Haryana government is also planning on enabling all fire tenders across the state with GPS and they are also in the process of starting an assessment survey in this 28

regard. The proposal has been floated at both the district and state levels, and whichever process is done earlier, will be implemented in Gurugram,” said Kashyap. Kashyap also said that a proposal sent to the Haryana Shahri Vikas Pradikharan (HSVP) in Gurugram by MCG in February last year for seeking land in sectors 9, 9A, 23A, 43 for setting up new fire stations has moved forward. The Gurugram fire department comes under the ambit of MCG. Kashyap said that due to the coronavirus outbreak, the matter was put on the back burner. “The proposal has just recently been cleared by the Haryana Shahari Vikas Pradhikaran (HSVP) within Gurugram and has been sent to the HSVP headquarters for final approval. The city has expanded a lot over the last decade and the existing four fire stations do not provide proper coverage, especially to those living in the newer sectors (sectors 58-115). Hence, new fire stations are urgently needed to reduce response time to such areas,” said Kashyap. The latest fire station to be opened in the city is in Udyog Vihar, in April 2012. Doubts Arise Over Fire Audit of Colleges Before Reopening responsible for the completion of the fire audit. The validity is for a year but the provision also tells them to get it done every six months. The B-form is like a certificate that says all systems are fine. “This should be submitted every January and July to the department. One copy must be kept with the institute while the other needs to be given to the fire department. However, nobody follows this process,” said Prashant Ranpise, chief fire officer at PMC. The Fire Officer of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) said no college had submitted the fire safety certificate despite making the audit of laboratories, hostels and electronic equipment at the institutes mandatory before reopening. The colleges need not approach the fire department to get the certificate. Institutes can approach any of the 500-odd licensed agencies in the state for the certificate as it is mandatory to submit it to the local self government body. Fire safety and other audits are essential as the institutions were shut for many months due to the lockdown. “Section 3 (3) Maharashtra Fire Prevention and Life Safety Measures Act, 2006, states that custodians of the building are

How to Prevent Industrial Fires? Industrial fires and explosions cost companies and governments billions of dollars every year, not to mention the loss of life, which can't be described in monetary terms. These disasters happen for many reasons, often because managers and employees are not aware of the risks that surround them at work every day. Here are five of the most common causes of industrial fires and explosions:

Combustible Dust Often overlooked, and highly deadly, combustible dust is a major cause of fire in food manufacturing, woodworking, chemical manufacturing, metalworking, pharmaceuticals, and just about every other industry you can name. The reason is that just about everything, including food, dyes, chemicals, and metals even materials that aren't fire risks in larger pieces has the potential to be combustible in dust form. The key ingredient in combustible dust fires and explosions is the presence of the dust itself. While you probably won't be able to eliminate dust entirely, you can make sure it doesn't accumulate to a dangerous level simply by following a regular housekeeping regimen.

Hot Work Although hot work is commonly equated with welding and torch cutting, there are many other activities including brazing, burning, heating, and soldering that pose a fire hazard. This is because the sparks and molten material, which reach temperatures greater than 1000°F, can easily travel more than 35 feet. Like combustible dust incidents, hot work disasters are preventable by following proper safety procedures. • Avoid hot work if possible. This isn't always a feasible solution, but if there's an alternative, take it. • Train Personnel. On the hazards associated with hot work, any site-specific hazards, the proper policies and procedures, and the use of safety equipment. • Ensure that the area is clear of flammable or combustible materials including dusts, liquids, and gases. • Use a written permit system. For all hot work projects, even where permits aren't required. BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY! • Supervise the work. Especially if you use outside contractors, make sure a safety professional is on hand to provide supervision.

Flammable Liquids and Gases These fires, which often occur at chemical plants, can be disastrous. These fires are often the result of explosions of flammable materials, such as rocket fuel (which produces a flammable gas), acrylic acid, and crude oil. There is certainly some danger inherent in any work involving flammable liquids and gases, but all available safety precautions should be taken to mitigate these risks. • Know the hazards. One major component of prevention is simply knowing the safety information for every liquid on your premises. This information is available on the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) that comes with such products. • Store flammable liquids properly. Make sure all hazardous materials are stored according to OSHA-compliant procedures. • Control all ignition sources. Except for when you're intentionally heating the flammable materials, keep ignition sources as far away from them as possible. • Provide Personal Protective Equipment. This is a must across all categories of fire hazards but especially when liquids and gases are involved.

Equipment and Machinery Heating and hot work equipment are typically the biggest problems here in particular, furnaces that aren't properly installed, operated, and maintained. Electrical Hazards Electrical fires are one of the top five causes of fires in manufacturing plants. Here is a non-exhaustive list of specific electrical hazards: • • • • •

Wiring that is exposed or not up to code Overloaded outlets Extension cords Overloaded circuits Static discharge

As with the previous risks, the key to preventing electrical fires is awareness and prevention. This involves training, maintenance, and following best practices. Here are a few to put into practice right now: • Don't overload electrical equipment or circuits. • Don't leave temporary equipment plugged in when it's not in use. • Avoid using extension cords, and never consider them permanent solutions. • Use antistatic equipment where required by NFPA or OSHA. • Follow a regular housekeeping plan to remove combustible dust and other hazardous materials from areas that contain equipment and machinery. • Implement a reporting system so that anyone who observes an electrical fire risk can report it without consequences.

Circuits and Pathways in NFPA 72 In Greece, over 2500 years ago, near the small town of Marathon, there was a battle. After the battle, one of the winning Athenians ran all the way from Marathon to Athens carrying the news. He ran along a path. Nowadays, the message could be carried by a person running along a narrow mountain road, a verbal telephone call, a news story over the microwave towers, a data signal carried over fiber optics, Etc.; so may choices. The NFPA would consider all of these to be communication paths. The paths are no longer just copper wires, but wireless radio waves are also used, Ethernet data cables are also used, and fiber optic cables are also used in fire alarm systems. Because of all the different types of communication paths for fire alarm systems being used nowadays, the NFPA is addressing them all differently than they did in the past. Beginning with the 2010 edition of NFPA 72, National Fire Alarm and Signalling Code, all of the "styles" of circuits were deleted, and four "classes" were added. A new chapter, Circuits and Pathways, was added during the reorganization of this code. In the past, the styles only described the operation during an alarm or fault condition for initiating device circuits, notification appliance circuits and signalling line circuits. NFPA 72, National Fire Alarm and Signalling Code, defines the performance of fire alarm circuit and pathways in Chapter 12. While the terms "circuit" and "pathway" are often used interchangeably, they are different. The styles of initiating device circuits (IDC), notification appliance circuits (NAC) and signalling line circuits (SLC) were eliminated, and four new classes were added. The intent was to add information about all circuits and pathways, not just IDCs, NACs and SLCs. A circuit is 36

defined in Chapter 3 as "either means of providing power or a connection path between locations", while a pathway is "any circuit, conductor, optic fiber, radio carrier or other means connecting two or more location." Basically, a circuit is copper, while a pathway can be copper or any other type of connection. There are three things considered by the NFPA with the carrying of the signals on the fire alarm system paths: 1. Supervision - The method of self-checking for faults - the end-of-line resistor continuity check and handshaking using data signals are two common methods 2. Redundancy - The continued operation of the whole fire alarm system, or a second path to carry signals around a problem is redundancy - an open wire or wire-to-wire short are some of the problems addressed with redundancy 3. Protection from Damage - Conduit is one common method used to protect the path Pathway performance is defined in Section 12.3, using Class A, B, C, D, E, N, or X based on the circuit performance. NFPA 72 does not determine what class is used on a particular pathway, but rather defines the performance of the pathway. The specification, designer, AHJ determine what class of pathway is used. NFPA 72, Chapter 24, "Emergency Communications Systems," Section 24.3.14 is the only place I have found any requirements for survivability. Survivability for fire alarm pathways is typically only required for systems employing partial evacuation or relocation. Since building and fire codes require systems to be installed in accordance with NFPA 72, they do not have specific provisions for survivability. The Chapter 24 technical committee is proposing important changes to the 2022 edition of the code. A pathway classification describes more than that. have to be separated by a certain distance; the two paths cannot be inside the same conduit, for instance. Many designers and contractors do not include survivable cable or fire-rated enclosures in their designs for in-building fire Emergency Voice/Alarm Communications Systems (EVACS) wiring as required in the code or at least not until the authority having jurisdiction enforces the requirement because a designer missed it the first time around. This may be due in part to some confusion over where survivability is required in the first place. Pathway survivability is not required for all EVACS; it is only required where occupants will remain in the building during an emergency (i.e., relocation or partial evacuation). The intent is to ensure that we can still get subsequent instructions to those occupants if the situation worsens. For those systems where pathway survivability is required, it does not necessarily need to be applied throughout the entire system; it must be applied only where the circuit runs through multiple notification zones, so that a fire in one notification zone doesn't impair the ability to communicate with occupants in another. Additionally, the current edition of NFPA 72 permits the installer to use Level 1, Level 2, or Level 3, meaning that a sprinklered building (i.e., Level 1 pathway survivability) does not require the use of fire-resistant cabling or an enclosure. No wonder a contractor or installer might not include fire-resistive cable in an initial design. The reason behind survivability requirements is to maintain the operational reliability of the EVACS during a fire. Pathway survivability for emergency communications systems (including EVACS) is covered in 24.3.14; Section 12.4.5 includes the definition of Level 4 pathway survivability. The previous requirements for survivability said only that the cable had to be two-hour-rated or installed in a two-hour-rated enclosure. The technical committee changed the requirement so that it is now related to the fire resistance rating of the building construction. This relationship is important because the listing of two-hour fire-rated cable is required to be attached to a concrete wall or floor assembly, constructed with a minimum of two-hour rating or as otherwise identified by the UL FHIT systems assembly. Additionally, as stated in the Annex A of the code, “Installing a pathway survivability Level 2 or Level 3 in a building that is constructed with less than two-hour construction would not be installed within the listing of the product.” For building construction with a fire-resistance rating of one hour, March 2021 - www.safesecuremagazine.com

but less than two hours, the technical committee has proposed a new Level 4 pathway survivability. With the more common use of timber construction for larger buildings, the expectation is these buildings would be classified as one-hour fire rated. Two-hour cable, as it is presently listed, would not be allowed when using the proposed Level 4 wiring or with wiring that meets the proposed separation requirements. That prohibition is due to the concern that a fire causing an open, ground-fault, or short-circuit fault on the communication and control circuits between rooms or enclosures could affect the operation of the in-building fire emergency voice/alarm control equipment within these rooms or enclosures. It is well known that the insulation on fire alarm cabling can melt when exposed to heat and flames, causing the conductors to short circuit. When this condition occurs, it is possible for an entire signaling line circuit to fail, seriously impacting communication and control circuits. To help guard against these kinds of catastrophic failures, the proposed code would require the use of fault circuit isolators to ensure that the entire circuit is not disabled during a fire. These proposed changes to the 2022 code would provide guidance in Annex A to assist designers, contractors, and AHJs in the proper separation of circuits as well as the location of fault circuit isolators to ensure both compliance with the code and a high degree of operational reliability. It is important to remember that for fire alarm systems designed for relocation and partial evacuation, communication must remain operational on all floors other than the fire floor during a fire. The primary fire protection goal is reliable communication during the fire. 39

Step 1: In your EVO Console, add a new video wall. For the current setup, the wall layout will be simply one screen, 1x1 grid. We shall use the same video wall screen for both the showroom and the operator's room.

To make the most out of the tiled video wall, remember a few aspects: • make sure the video cards meet the hardware requirements for EVO Monitor • calibrate your displays to match the brightness and color settings • use displays with the same aspect ratio and resolution • choose displays with the near-zero bezel (frame) and minimize the gap between them

Step 2: Install EVO Monitor on all client workstations. The client application does not require a license, and you can use either 32 or 64 bit packages. Each application instance may have one or several windows. Therefore, the four panels can be split between two, three, or four workstations. Let's assume we have two client PCs here, each driving two displays. Step 3: Link physical displays to video wall screens. In this case, we have only got a single video wall screen, and we shall use it twice. First, in the showroom, all 2x2 displays will belong to the video wall screen with a "tiled" option. To do this, open the multi-display settings, select a window, tick the Video wall screen setting, then also tick the Tiled display option on the right. In the mosaic preview, enter the grid size and then select the part of the big screen that is occupied by the underlying physical display. Second, in the operator's room, simply point the monitor to the same video wall screen, without selecting the "tiled" setting. As a result, the same output will be produced on a single preview display.

Step 4: have fun managing the video wall remotely or with E&A. For manual remote administration, there is a separate tab in the EVO Monitor application called - who would have thought? - Video wall. To start, drag and drop your video wall from the Resources section on the left. And then, place the desired layouts, channels and maps onto the preview area below. All adjustments will take instant effect and you will notice the changes in both rooms. Hotel Safety and Security Checklist It is important to run a hotel security program that doesn't compromise customer service. Some hotels see this as a challenge because they think security and customer service are at odds. But the right tools and business practices actually help you do both well. The business advisory firm agrees that finding the right balance of customer service and security is essential for the long term sustainability of hotels. To help you get a complete picture of your hotel security program we've developed a top-to-bottom hotel safety and security checklist. It walks you through 12 major aspects of hotel security that you will want to evaluate. Facility Protections Securing your hotel's facilities requires a wide variety of protections including access control, vehicle security, key management, video surveillance, and building identification and accessibility.  Access Control If you don't already have an inventory of all locks in your venue, start creating one. Are there locks on all doors and windows? How about slideand-chain bolts on guest room doors? Guest room inventories can be easily delegated to service staff as they turn over rooms or perform other tasks. Are you tracking spare guest keys? Regardless of whether your hotel uses swipe cards, proximity cards, or hard keys, make sure you know how many spares you use each quarter. Then schedule reorders that keep you ahead of that rate. 62

You should also inventory and test locks on doors to all back-of-the-house spaces. Make sure that those doors are out of sight whenever possible. If staff aren't considering the security implications, interior design changes can accidentally expose these doors.  Vehicle Security Evaluate your guest parking facilities. Good lighting and sightlines are the best crime deterrents. Are all lights working? Have any trees or bushes grown to obstruct sightlines from building entrances? Resorts and hotels with their own carts or vehicles need to evaluate their security as well. Are those vehicles and their keys secured when not in use? Can you accurately track who is using them? If you've had problems with these tasks in the past, fleet management software might be a good tool to implement as your fleet grows.  Key Management There should be a mechanism for tracking and auditing all key usage. Are all back-of-the-house keys kept in a secure location? If lost or misplaced keys are a common problem at your hotel, consider whether an electronic key management system might be able to track keys more cost-effectively.  Video Surveillance Your surveillance system is only as good as the footage that you can play back. Do you have a documented retention policy for camera footage? Do you have a mechanism to confirm that staff are actually following it?  Building Identification and Accessibility Make sure there is a clear line of sight from staffed locations, such as the reception desk, to each main entrance. Outside entrances should be well lit and clearly labeled so that guests are able to locate your facility when they're unfamiliar with the area.

Policies will guide staff behavior, allowing you to better manage guest experiences and reduce liability for wrongful actions. Conduct annual security training on all policies and security checklists (including this one).

Human Protections Keeping your guests and employees safe requires stringent security procedures and state-of-the-art technology. Three vital human protections include:  Duress Alert Systems (Panic Buttons) Many cities and states have laws requiring hotels to provide duress alert buttons for service staff. Many other jurisdictions have similar legislation in the works. If you don't yet have a duress alert system, take the time to investigate what might be the most effective way to implement one in your venue. The costs and features of these systems can vary widely, so planning now could save you money and effort later on. If you already have a duress alert system, schedule periodic drills to ensure that it is working properly and give staff an opportunity to practice responding to an alarm. Also, decide whether it makes sense for your venue to have policies for documenting expected response times and handling potential misuse.  Security Staffing Consider whether your current security staffing will provide adequate coverage for the next five years. If you don't have any staff now, would it make sense to work with a security contractor or to hire in-house? If you have security staff, make sure you have an ongoing process in place to ensure that they're properly licensed and registered. This could mean asking your contract agency for annual reports or running your own checks for in-house staff. Regardless of your staffing arrangement, you need policies detailing how you want staff to handle sensitive situations that might arise in your venue.  Evacuation Procedures Do you have a documented Emergency Action Plan (EAP)? Make sure it's updated to reflect any recent changes in your hotel's operations. In the U.S., OSHA requires an EAP for all businesses with more than 10 people on staff. To simplify this process, OSHA offers a useful EAP development app. Even if you don't yet need a documented EAP, you should build a summary of your evacuation plans into your hotel safety and security checklist. Has your venue's floor plan changed in any way? Does this impact evacuation routes and any posted signage? As for equipment, make sure smoke alarm testing is conducted annually. At larger hotels and especially resorts, it might also be worth considering whether an automated mustering system makes sense to record staff and guest locations during emergencies.

Asset Protections One of the most challenging aspects of hotel security is protecting both hotel and guest assets. Here are four protections you can put in place to keep valuables safe.  Phone and Mobile Device Security Audit guest rooms and business phones in your hotel to confirm that emergency services are available on all of them. This is especially important if your hotel has recently changed telecom carriers or PBX systems, which can disrupt how dialing out works. Also, do you have a policy in place for staff to contact emergency services if phone lines are down? Radios, mobile phones, and tablets are all now standard issue equipment.
