Getting vaccinated is safer than getting infected A third wave of coronavirus in India is said to be ‘inevitable’. There is an urgent need to empirically identify the current trends of vaccine supply and immune profiles. It is imperative to add more nuances to the clamour around the third wave for both public consumption and policy action. Vaccines are a critical tool in the battle against COVID-19, and getting vaccinated is one of the best ways to protect yourself and others from COVID-19. Vaccines train our immune system to recognize the targeted virus and create antibodies to fight off the disease without getting the disease itself. After vaccination, the body is ready to fight the virus if it is later exposed to it, thereby preventing illness. Most people who are infected with SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, develop an immune response within the first few weeks, but we are still learning how strong and lasting that immune response is, and how it varies between different people. People who have already been infected with SARS-CoV-2 should still get vaccinated unless told otherwise by their health care provider. Even if you’ve had a previous infection, the vaccine acts as a booster that strengthens the immune response. There have also been some instances of people infected with SARS-CoV-2 a second time, which makes getting vaccinated even more important. On a positive note, I firmly believe that the 3rd wave is likely to be well handled both by the government and other relevant health authorities including hospitals and healthcare workers as the devastating second wave has taught many lessons and led to ramping up of infrastructure including that for Oxygen supplies. The fact that we were caught unawares led to an aggressive gear up by all concerned. A large part of the population has suffered Covid and would have reasonable immunity.

With all 18+ soon getting free vaccinations and the clinical trials for children already underway we may well be prepared to tackle the 3rd wave quite robustly. The people at large need to continue to tightly maintain Covid appropriate behavior. All this out together should help vastly and see us through. Safe and Effective Vaccines are making a significant contribution to preventing severe disease and death from COVID-19. As vaccines are rolling out and immunity is building, it is important to continue to follow all of the recommended measures that reduce the spread of SARS-CoV-2. This includes physically distancing yourself from others; wearing a mask, especially in crowded and poorly ventilated settings; cleaning your hands frequently; covering any cough or sneeze in your bent elbow; and opening windows when indoors. Strategizing Fire and Life Safety Assessment for Achieving Business Sustainability 1.0 Business Sustainability: If romance with risk is business, then romance with business must be sustainability. If it is so, the importance of inclusion sustainability approach during the business strategy formation and percolating it down to the rank & file level to effectively mitigating the HSE (Health, Safety & Environment) risk, needs no explanation. Business Sustainability is essential component for the sustainable profit generation and long-term prosperity of the organization. Sustainability principles are to provide maximize the business opportunities with minimum negative impact the environment, communities and economies in places where the business operates. For developing a Business Strategy, an eye towards business sustainability is something, which is always desired entity yet often ignored, as profit making is more luring.

2.0 Importance of Risk Assessment: Business Sustainability is largely dependent on the right & adequate Risk Assessment and Stringent adaptation of Risk Mitigation measures. For achieving business sustainability, the foundation of the business has to be made rock solid with Profit, People and Planet (3P). Hence, the concept of sustainability shall be included in the Business strategy. The convenient way for this could have been sincere implementation of ISO systems like ISO9001 for Quality, ISO 45001:2018 for Health & Safety, ISO 14001:2015 for Environment etc. However, inadequate and non-sincere methods of ISO certification have resulted into niche focus on sustainability. As a result, focused attention towards sustainability, especially in form of Electrical Fire & Safety Assessment shall be considered as an important option.

3.0 Electrical Fire and Safety Assessment: Business Sustainability is largely dependent on the right & adequate Risk Assessment and stringent adaptation of Risk Mitigation measures. Major risk that an industrial and commercial establishment faces is the risk of fire. Among all the fire incidents, which happen in the industries, fire caused by electricity is the upmost important one. Being an important constituent of the Business Sustainability, Electrical Fire & Safety Assessment finds its own importance. Inadequate or absence of Risk Assessment leads to accidents and disasters, which 12

We developed a frame work for assessing the sustainability of the organization with a focus on the intersection of environmental, social/cultural and economic systems through the lenses of the sciences, social sciences and humanities. We named this frame work as "Winners' Sustainability © Model" (Copy Right Registration No. L - 104410/2021), which is one such low-cost generic, fairly simple and straight forward tool that helps the organization to achieve a high level of sustainability. 7.0 Implementation: Focused attention towards sustainability can be achieved conveniently if the model is incorporated as 'Frame Work' of the business strategy, which are then percolated as lead & lag measurement parameters in the corporate Balance Score Card or unit level SMART HSE objectives and even upto KRA & KPI of the individuals covering a wide spectrum of Electrical, Fire and Life Safety issues. Training shall be provided to the associates to implement the protocol points of the frame work. An audit or assessment is conducted by a third party and the organization is then assessed for its sustainability performance and a score in form of Organizational Sustainability Index. 13

India has a very long coast line of 7516 km - 5422.6 km of mainland coastline and 1197 km of Indian island. Indian coastline touches nine states. These states are Gujrat, Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, West Bengal and Two Union Territories - Daman and Diu and Puducherry. The Two island territories of India are Andaman and Nicobar island in Bay of Bengal and Lakshadweep Island in the Arabian Sea. India is a country in South Asia that is bounded by the Arabian Sea, the Indian Ocean and the Bay of Bengal, while it shares land borders with Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, Myanmar, Nepal and Pakistan. India is also located within the vicinity of Sri Lanka and the Maldives, while its Andaman and Nicobar Islands share a maritime border with Thailand, Myanmar and Indonesia. On average around 2 to 4 tropical cyclones impact India every year, while most of these tropical cyclones impact the east coast of Indian states of West Bengal, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu. The West Coast of India is less prone to cyclones with one cyclone out of 2 to 4 hits the

 Super Cyclonic Storm Amphan May 2020 This cyclone was a powerful and catastrophic tropical cyclone that caused widespread damage in Eastern India, specifically West Bengal, Odisha and in Bangladesh in May 2020. It was the strongest tropical cyclone to strike the Ganges Delta since Sidr (was a tropical cyclone that resulted in one of the worst natural disasters in Bangladesh) of the 2007 season and the first super cyclonic storm to have formed in the Bay of Bengal since the 1999 Odisha cyclone. Causing over US$13 billion of damage, Amphan is also the costliest cyclone ever recorded in the North Indian Ocean.

On the next day, Nisarga further intensified to a severe cyclonic storm and turned to the northeast, ultimately making landfall approximately 95 km (60 mi) south of Mumbai. Nisarga rapidly weakened once inland and dissipated on 4 June.

Amphan originated from a low-pressure area persisting a couple hundred miles (300 km) east of Colombo, th Sri Lanka, on 13 May 2020. Tracking northeastward, the disturbance organized over exceptionally warm sea surface temperatures; the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) upgraded the system to a tropical depression on 15th May while the India Meteorological Department (IMD) followed suit the following day. On 17th May, Amphan underwent rapid intensification and became an extremely severe cyclonic storm within 12 hours. th

On 18 May, at approximately 12:00 UTC, Amphan reached its peak intensity with 3-minute sustained wind speeds of 240 km/h (150 mph), 1-minute sustained wind speeds of 260 km/h (160 mph), and a minimum central barometric pressure of 920 mbar (27.17 inHg). The storm began an eyewall replacement cycle shortly after it reached its peak intensity, but the continued effects of dry air and wind shear disrupted this process and caused Amphan to gradually weaken as it paralleled the eastern coastline of India. On 20th May, between 10:00 and 11:00 UTC, the cyclone made landfall in West Bengal. At the time, the JTWC estimated Amphan's 1-minute sustained winds to be 155 km/h (95 mph). Amphan rapidly weakened once inland and dissipated shortly thereafter. Coastal areas in West Bengal comprising East Midnapore, North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, Kolkata, Hooghly and Howrah as well as Odisha were affected by the cyclone. It also caused significant destruction in Bangladesh

 Severe Cyclonic Storm Nisarga Strongest tropical cyclone to strike the Indian state Maharashtra in the month of June since 1891. Nisarga originated as a depression in the Arabian Sea and nd moved generally northward. On 2 June, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) upgraded the system to a cyclonic storm, assigning the name Nisarga.

Nisarga was the second cyclone to strike the Indian subcontinent within two weeks' time, after Cyclone Amphan, the first super cyclonic storm to have st formed in the Bay of Bengal in the 21 century, devastated the state of West Bengal in May 2020. Making landfall in Maharashtra with winds of 110 km/h (70 mph).

 Taukate Cyclone Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm Tauktae was a powerful, deadly and damaging tropical cyclone in the Arabian Sea that became the strongest tropical cyclone to make landfall in the Indian state of Gujarat since the 1998 Gujarat cyclone and one of the strongest tropical cyclones to ever affect the west coast of India. Tauktae originated from a tropical disturbance, which was first monitored th by the India Meteorological Department on May 13 . The disturbance drifted eastward and organized into th a deep depression by May 14 . The storm soon took a northward turn, continuing to gradually intensify, and the system strengthened into a cyclonic storm and was named Tauktae later that same day. th Tauktae continued intensifying into May 15 , reaching severe cyclonic storm status later that day. Tauktae began to parallel the coast of the Indian states of Kerala, Karnataka and Maharashtra, before rapidly intensifying into a very severe cyclonic storm,. th On May 17 , Tauktae intensified into an extremely severe cyclonic storm, reaching its peak intensity soon afterward. After making landfall, On May 19th, Tauktae weakened into a well-marked low-pressure area. Tauktae brought heavy rainfall and flash floods to areas along the coast of Kerala and on

Lakshadweep. There were reports of heavy rain in the states of Goa, Karnataka and Maharashtra as well. Tauktae resulted in at least 169 deaths in India, and left another 81 people missing the storm displaced over 200,000 people in Gujarat. The cyclone also caused widespread infrastructure and agricultural damage to the western coast of India. Upwards of 40 fishermen were lost at sea when their boats were caught in the cyclone. Mumbai also experienced impact from the storm, with airports being closed for safety reasons. The city experienced their highest ever recorded wind gust at 114 km/h (70 mph). Power outages and other electrical problems also prevailed in the impacted regions. The cyclone made landfall in Gujarat the same day as India recorded its, at the time, highest singleday COVID-19 death toll, with 4,329 deaths reported.

The cyclone also caused a large number of maritime incidents as it moved along the coast of western India. Hundreds were missing from various barges; however, most of them have been rescued. Other larger ships also experienced problems, such as structure or power losses. At least 37 bodies have been recovered from rescued barges, with over 40 people still missing. Losses from Tauktae are estimated at ?15,000 crore or US$2.1 billion.

In preparations for the storm, many electrical companies in West Bengal and Odisha prepared additional generators and transformers for possible electrical problems. Evacuations were also ordered, starting on May 24th on low-lying areas in East Midnapore and West Midnapore and Jhargram. Hooghly, Kolkata and North 24 Parganas and South 24 Parganas are now placed on high alert. Railway operations and marine activities were halted due to Yaas, while rescue authorities and medical teams were deployed in for possible emergencies. In Bangladesh, over two million individuals were ordered to be evacuated in coastal areas of the country due to the storm's approach. Food supplies and emergency funds were also released for the evacuees. 20 people across India and Bangladesh died due to Yaas. The total damages in West Bengal, the most heavily impacted Indian state from Yaas, were estimated to be around `20 thousand crore (US$2.76 billion). The cyclone also caused an estimated `610 crore (US$83.63 million) in damage in Odisha.

Very Severe Cyclonic Storm Yaas was a strong and very damaging tropical cyclone that made landfall in Odisha and brought significant impacts to West Bengal during late May 2021. Yaas formed from a tropical disturbance on May 23rd. Conditions in the basin favored development as the system became a deep depression later that day, before intensifying into a cyclonic storm on the next day, receiving the name Yaas. Evacuation became more difficult and harder as most of the evacuation center have already been used as a quarantine center. The cyclone has also magnified existing inequalities, with poor families more likely to have stayed in crowded, enclosed shelters, which could be a recipe for spreading the virus more. With streets and suburbs flooded, and sanitation systems decimated, the risk of cholera is very high in these areas.

Facial Recognition Technology (FRT): Touchless Systems for a Safe, Post-Pandemic World FRT uses the almost a blueprint of facial features and their distance from one another for identification against a "pool" of faces with similar physiognomies. These physiognomies can be derived from both a stagnant or video image/s. Utilizing information, facial recognition algorithms can measure the differences between the face being searched and the enrolled faces in a pool. The smaller the variance, the more likeness that faces will match.

How Face Recognition Technology is Harnessed? An improved face algorithm in today's Face Recognition Systems (FRT) are useful for firming up security systems, building personalized products, tracking employee performance, and more. FRT algorithms work by filtering large chunks of data including appropriate 2D and 3D human images. AI subset, Data mining and Deep learning is essential for scanning and tracing discrete facial features from images in real-time. It produces a "inimitable face print" for each image by analysing nose measurement, eye distance, and other features or 'nodal points'.

Consequently, it has become critical for businesses to guard entry gateways, regulated areas, and other crucial access points with cutting-edge check-in ports. Here are a few use cases of FRT for access controla) Security cameras with in-built facial recognition propensities can enhance scrutiny of systems. b) Power-driven by deep learning, the cameras can recognise, authenticate and segregate between employees and culprits in realtime. Also, it is effective at detecting replicas. c) Huge organizations can easily integrate FRT into turnstiles or baffle gates to ensure legitimate access into office premises. Social Media conglomerate, Facebook launched DeepFace in 2014 to pioneer FRT applications. The FRT backed program verified 97.25% accuracy in identifying if two faces in an image belong to the same person. It was followed by Google's FaceNet that confirmed a 100% accuracy score.

2) Tracking Attendance Nothing like biometric attendance systems which are disposed to to hacking, FRT-powered attendance tracking is more responsive and insusceptible to hacks. For instance in Dec 2014, Jan Krissler, a prominent hacker, disrupted the fingerprint-enabled security systems by using high resolution photos, including one from a government press office, to efficaciously reconstruct the fingerprints of Germany's defence minister Ursula von der Leyen. This kind of successful attacks against fingerprint identification has led security researchers to avoid use them as replacement for passwords, as they should be used as second factor of authentication.

Conclusion: Facial Recognition Technology has come a long way since its inception and extensive usage in airports and other critical infrastructures. Originally beleaguered with technical challenges and widely viewed as an exorbitant futuristic solution, facial recognition is now firmly entrenched in numerous consumer and business products and applications. Innovative advancement in software, specifically in the domain of algorithms, neural networks and deep learning and/or artificial intelligence (AI), have all dramatically improved both the performance and accuracy of facial recognition, further intensifying its use for an increasing number of applications. Catching Waste Fires Before They Happen

9M Building, No Basement: You Can Self-Attest Fire Safety

The government’s decisions come days after the Gujarat high court pulled it up over the issue of fire safety in buildings and establishments in the state

GANDHINAGAR: The Gujarat government informed that the educational institutes located in buildings up to 9 metres in height and without basement will not be required to obtain a fire safety No-Objection Certificate (NOC).

OTHER DECISIONS  In addition to eight metros, six new fire regions will be added in the state to expand the coverage of fire services.  A fire region will be set up in the jurisdiction of each regional commissioner of municipalities in the districts of Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, Gandhinagar, Rajkot, and Bhavnagar. A senior IAS officer will act as the fire officer of these regions.  Chief fire officers of municipal corporations will also issue fire NOCs for the areas including those falling under the Urban Development Authority of the respective corporation. Now, such institutions will instead have to submit a self-certified document, assuring that they have put in place all the fire safety systems in line with the prescribed rules, an official release said. The selfcertified fire NOC will have to be submitted to the officer concerned in the education department. In another significant decision, the government said a building should not be denied a fire safety NOC for not having the required Building Use (BU) permission. This implies that if a building satisfies all requirements of a fire safety NOC, it will get such an NOC even if it does not have the BU permission. 32

Officials of the fire service should understand that issuing a fire NOC is required for a building to obtain the BU permission, the statement said. The statement added that if a building meets fire safety provisions, it does not require BU permission to get the fire NOC. In response to a public interest litigation (PIL) filed in the HC, local authorities had said that hundreds of hospitals, educational institutes, and residential and government buildings in Gujarat do not have fire safety NOCs. Jharkhand Focus on Fire Safety at Covid Hospitals Across State Districts Asked Share Details of Action Taken, Appoint Nodal Officers to Ensure Compliance

The Jharkhand government has directed district administrationsof the state to share details of action taken to ensure fire safety at Covid hospitals. A letter addressed by National Health Mission (NHM) Director to all the deputy commissioners stated that the districts should submit details regarding the measures taken for monthly fire safety audit of all Covid hospitals, appointment of nodal officers for fire safety at each and ensuring fire safety NOC for the hospitals. A detailed report on the compliance of fire safety norms in Covid hospitals will be shared by the districts with the health department in a virtual meeting.

However, no major fire incident at Covid hospitals have been reported in Jharkhand since March 2020, when the deadly virus made its entry in the state, officials said. As per government records, at least 15 hospitals in the state were running full-fledged Covid care facilities with Ventilators and ICUs.

From cell phones to refrigerators, we live in an interconnected world. The Internet of Things (IoT) is the network of physical objects - such as cars, thermostats and watches - that have the ability to exchange data and interoperate with existing network infrastructure. They transmit data to manufacturers, owners or other devices, and can be sensed and controlled remotely. It provides us with real-time control and information from IoT-enabled products and systems. Networked fire Alarm systems have a number of advantages over these traditional ones. If an alarm goes off, for instance, a networked system can tell you exactly where it is and when it was activated, giving you more information that you can use to take action. It can also allow you to link different parts of a building or site without running cables between them, and can allow you to operate it remotely, either to turn it off or for testing. Today's IoT smart buildings include two types of connected technologies: Information Technology (IT) and Operational Technology (OT). Fire Alarm Control units, intrusion detection systems, mass notification systems and access control systems reside on the OT side usually managed by facilities operations. Both systems have vulnerabilities that commonly include equipment tampering as well as inside and outside threats. Firewalls and other cyber protection processes and devices can help mitigate the potential for a widespread attack and protect the individual components of the IT or OT systems. Cyber vulnerabilities can have a dramatic consequence if these products and systems are not properly protected. Building sensors can provide early detection of 44

unwanted events such as intrusion or fire. Cameras are used for monitoring and remote surveillance that may communicate with alarm control units that can in turn provide information to end users and monitoring stations. Historically these products were hardwired, but technology has enabled us to communicate either wirelessly or wired through an IT infrastructure that is also linked to the internet. Electronic life safety and physical security infrastructures include emergency communications systems, fire alarm systems, alarm receiving systems, automated teller machine systems, access control systems, surveillance cameras, DVRs, NVRs and the like. There are a variety of codes, standards and best practice guidelines that can help guide creation of a cybersecurity program. Fire alarm control units may include two types of software: executive software and site-specific software. These applications are covered by UL 864, the Standard for Safety of Control Units and Accessories for Fire Alarm Systems, and NFPA 72. Under part of UL 864, thirdparty certifiers execute and test the equipment's software for integrity of normal operation. UL 5500, the & Standard for Safety for Remote Software Updates, covers best practices for software patches and updates. UL 5500 offers guidance on technical attributes necessary for the remote connection to smart devices and safe functionalities and securely executing remote software downloads. Most smart systems rely on the ability to update software remotely or onsite. UL 5500 applies to these applications in conjunction with the product's end standard. • If sprinklers are unavailable, a simple hose pipe which is connected to a water source can also help. In most buildings they have hose reels for such purposes. • Fire Extinguishers - The right kind of extinguishers should be installed in the appropriate area, ICU, passageway, kitchens, electrical rooms, etc. - Ensuring that sufficient number of extinguishers are kept at regular intervals – every 15 metres. - Extinguishers should be installed at chest level, for easy access. - Instructions have to be posted along with the extinguishers so that in an emergency anyone can deploy it. • Public Address (PA) System: Provides hospital operators with a way to disseminate instructions. • Signages: Ensuring that luminescent signages are placed at floor level also. In the eventuality of a fire, smoke rises above ground. For people crawling under the smoke at ground level, these signages are visible. • Kitchen and Laundry - Avoid grease fires by emptying appliances’ grease traps on a regular basis. - Store flammable liquids, oils or other items far away from cooking equipment. - Keep portable fire extinguishers (including dry chemical extinguishers) close by and ensure that the staff knows how to operate them. • Chemicals - Pay special attention to areas where flammable chemicals are stored. These areas should not be accessible to the general public. - Ensure that no fire/smoke comes in contact with this area such as cigarette, agarbatti, candle, etc • Fire lift is meant for fire personnel only, not for public, during an evacuation. Fire lifts are designed to withstand heat for an hour or so, to help fire personnel reach higher floors for containment and rescue. Public should always use the staircase in case of fire and not any lift.

Preparation: Establishing a Routine • Training: Conduct regular training exercise for staff on how to identify the sources and types of fire, how to use fire fighting equipment, mock drills and evacuation strategy. • Check all electrical cords for frays or tears. At Least two people should be assigned to check all the electrical equipment/room/shafts etc. • On a daily basis such as hose, hydrants, extinguishers, etc., to ensure that they are in working condition. Only the Sprinkler system cannot be checked on a daily basis, hence it is kept in automatic mode. Make sure the functioning of the fire protection system is working in automatic mode. • Inspect all electrical points every couple of hours to see that they are not overloaded. Switch off any device not in use. • Communication: Ensure that the PA system is functioning properly, utilize it to manage crowds/instruct people regularly so that people learn to pay attention and follow instructions given. • Fire and Smoke alarms, etc have to be in working condition at all times. So, all the staff can be alerted at once if there is a fire. Fire suppression systems are some of the best ways to keep small fires from turning into large emergencies, keeping them serviced and working order. • Ensure that sprinklers, hose systems, hydrants are connected to a functional water source and the sprinklers are kept on an Automatic Mode.

There are many kinds of objects and materials to handle, each posing different hazards. There may be individual objects or groups of objects in boxes, bins, totes, or pallets. We use buckets and scoops of various types to handle bulk materials, like grain, gravel, earth, and loose parts. For example, in humans, we see sprains and strains of backs, arms, and legs. • A crane boom may buckle, a chain or wire rope that is part of the lifting device may break, rigging that restrains load may fail, or conveyor support may collapse.

Loads Another class of hazards is falling loads. • Materials may fall on people and cause injury, or they may fall on property and cause damage. • A load may shift and tip over. • A load may be inadequately rigged, restrained, or anchored.

Motion Another class of hazard is material in motion. The speed and mass of materials and equipment are important considerations. • Objects may strike something else and cause damage or strike a person and cause injury. • One may operate equipment too fast, tip it over, and be out of control or unable to stop it quickly. • People may be run over or have their hands or bodies caught, crushed, or pinched. • The rate of flow is important, particularly when materials are handled in different ways in an overall process. Unless there is a balanced flow, materials will pile up at certain points, possibly causing workers to rush and do things in an unsafe manner.

Controls There are many different controls for preventing materials handling accidents. Controls are related to the kind of activity, kind of equipment, and kind of material. There are also controls for the environments where material handling occurs. Eliminate Handling Analysis of operations may identify ways to eliminate material handling tasks. If material handling steps are eliminated, there are fewer opportunities for handling hazards, which makes sense from a safety point of view as well as making good economic sense. Material handling takes time, costs money, and increases the likelihood of damage to items handled.

Planning If materials handling is needed, one should plan the details. • Handling locations should be clear of hazards. • Planning should include a selection of correct equipment, identification and analysis of steps that may go wrong, and establishment of procedures for dealing with contingency problems. • Hand signals, two-way radio systems, and other means of communication must be arranged, and participants must understand the plans. • Even a seemingly simple, two-person lift requires planning. • Participants should, as a minimum, go over how they will proceed from start to finish, what they will do if something starts to go wrong, and how they will communicate during the process. Mechanical handling is generally preferred to manual handling. Manual handling is usually more expensive than mechanical handling. Design and Selection Materials handling tools, devices, and equipment require proper design. • Standards from various sources may be applicable. • Design considerations must include : 1. structural strength, 2. operational features, 3. control systems, 4. visibility, 5. failure modes, 6. incorporation of safety features, and other factors. • Even permanently installed materials handling equipment must have safety features. For example, 1. Conveyors that move above workers in a factory must have overhead protection for the people below to prevent objects and materials from falling on them. 2. Some materials handling equipment must have access ways and guardrails for maintenance and lubrication tasks. 3. There may be a need for exhaust ventilation or sprayers to isolate or control dust. 4. Power equipment may need emergency shut off controls and guards may be required. • Each design requires an analysis of uses and use environments. Selection of equipment must match

use requirements to availability of necessary features to ensure safe use. 1. Selection of the right handling equipment for a job also is important. 2. Specific jobs require particular handling equipment. 3. Special features may be needed for certain uses. 4. Whoever makes the selection must know the task, the equipment, and the use environment. Use People must use the equipment correctly. Many examples of proper and safe use can be cited. Loads on materials handling equipment must not exceed safe load limits. Operators must drive mobile equipment safely. Cranes should not be operated within certain distances of power lines. Training The use of each kind of materials handling equipment requires particular knowledge and skill. Operators and those involved in the area of use must learn what hazards equipment and its use impose and how to control the hazards.

They need to develop skills in operating controls, develop skill in recognizing when things could and do go wrong, and be knowledgeable of the suitable action to take. They must develop skills in the procedures and judgments related to planning and executing materials handling tasks. They must know what conditions in the use environment add to the hazards of the material handling task, and they must know when stopping the activity is more important than the loss of equipment or materials or more important than injury or loss of life. Environments There are many different and important use environment factors. • Lighting, visibility, weather, terrain, properties of materials (weight, toxicity, stability, etc.), and location of people on or near a site must be evaluated. • Proper controls must be in place before handling tasks start. • Even communication means have to be worked out on loading docks where workers do not speak the same language.

It includes the organization's efforts to prevent and/or mitigate loss, risks to or from personnel, threats to its physical assets, damage to its technology and intellectual property, or risks of any other kind arising from all elements surrounding the work environment. It also includes matters that focus on careers, communications, legal and regulatory issues, technology, metrics and outsourcing in the safety and security field, as well as effective safety and security practices and global safety and security issues. OVERVIEW Safety and Security encompasses two overlapping areas of practice. In the following discussion, safety and security issues are sometimes treated separately and are sometimes combined, as appropriate. It does not include matters involving workplace wellness or health maintenance programs, or Workers' Compensation, which are encompassed in the benefits functional area. WORKPLACE SAFETY Workplace Safety is a process that seeks to eliminate or reduce risks of injury or illness to employees. The chief aim of workplace safety is to protect an organization's most valuable asset its people. Workplace safety is achieved through a variety of methods, including policies, procedures and specific hazard control techniques. Policies and Procedures are devised and integrated into the organization's overall management and administrative processes. They usually involve specific job task procedures established for working with or around equipment, hazardous environments or other forms of high-hazard conditions. Safety procedures and policies include accountability requirements to ensure that prescribed practices are followed. Safety Professionals apply a well-recognized hierarchy of measures to eliminate or control specific workplace hazards. The measures are applied as part of an orderly decision-making process, as follows: Substitution - Can the existing process, material or equipment be replaced with a less hazardous process, material or equipment? Isolation - Can barriers or limits be placed between people and the hazard? This could be physical barriers, time separation or distance. Ventilation - Can the potential hazardous airborne substances be ventilated through dilution or capture? Administrative Controls - Can the hazards be effectively mitigated through specialized operating practices? Examples include restricting access to certain high-hazard areas to authorized personnel only, adjusting work schedules or adopting preventive maintenance programs to address potential equipment breakdown. Personal Protective Equipment - If the preceding methods are not sufficient or feasible, can Personal Protective Equipment be provided (e.g. safety glasses, gloves, hard hats, hearing protection, safety footwear, respirators). WORKPLACE SECURITY The chief aim of Workplace Security is to protect employees from internal and external security risks. Workplace security has gained much attention in the last several years due to an increase in workplace violence, the necessity of background investigations of prospective and current employees, Internet and technology-based security needs, threats of terrorism, and increased legal liability to organizations for not taking reasonable measures to safeguard the workplace due to security threats. Workplace security risks vary depending on an organization's business, its location and its hours of operation. A fundamental element of any workplace security initiative is a security risk assessment. Risks need to be properly identified to establish appropriate methods, either procedural or physical barriers and systems. The scope of workplace security has continued to expand. Ground or first obstruction Whether you are working in a cradle, on scaffolding, or performing any other type of work at heights, the fall arrest system is of no help if you reach the ground before your fall is stopped. Although it sounds obvious, we, unfortunately, see all too often inadequate fall arrest systems. The source of the problem is usually a lack of training or a solution developed without the assistance of a qualified person. Miscalculating the fall arrest distance always leads to the same result: injuries or death. Many workers don't fully understand how a fall arrest system works and don't adjust the system according to the actual data of the situation. Often, when adding the length of the safety harness, the lanyard, the anchorage as well as the height of the

worker, the total length can cause injuries. Therefore, to learn how to efficiently calculate the fall distance and leave the necessary clearance is crucial.

The Components of a Fall Arrest System A fall arrest system (Personal Protective Equipment for working at heights) is essentially composed of three integral elements: a body harness, a fall-arrest device (lifeline, shock absorber, carabiner, connector, cable, etc.), and an anchorage system. The greater the free fall distance, the more energy the fall will produce and the more violent will be the shock. The free fall is the distance traveled during a fall before the fall arrest system is triggered. July 2021 - www.visionmediahitech.com

It is important to minimize the free fall distance (maximum of 1.8 meters according to the CSTC). In order to achieve this, the user must whenever possible, attach his lanyard to an anchorage connection point just above his shoulders. In case of a fall, this will reduce the impact force, the risks of contact with an obstacle, and the injury severity while facilitating emergency and rescue operations. Specific anchorage points should be located directly above the user - "above" in order to reduce the fall distance and "directly" to minimize the pendular movements. The risk of swing fall increases in direct relation to the horizontal distance between the user's harness and his anchorage connection point. For that reason, anchors (on the roof) must not be spaced more than 3 meters (10 feet) in between on a right angle from the building's facade and applied along with with with the traction axis corresponding to the worker's potential fall. Also, the angle created by the offset must not be over 22 degrees.

Factors to Be Taken into Consideration When Calculating the Fall Arrest Distance 1. Length of the Lanyard, the Harness, and the Anchorage Connector For an untrained worker, a lanyard of six feet may seem enough when working at a height of 10 or 12 feet. Still, the length of the harness and the anchorage connectors must be added. A fixed anchor is easy to calculate as the only distance to add is the ring. However, when the anchor is part of a horizontal lifeline, the calculation is more complex. Horizontal lifelines are not tight in their initial design and can stretch in the event of a fall. This collapse must be taken into account. Calculating the collapse may be as simple as tightening the rope to calculate the distance, but determining the collapse during a fall is more complicated. The force applied on a lifeline will pull it farther than you could measure when only tightening the line. On average, calculate about 3% of the total length of the tight line to 15% of the length of a lifeline using a shock absorber. Ideally, an engineer should calculate the collapse for a fall according to the number of people attached to the lifeline. (Find out: How to choose your fall protection anchorage). 2. Deceleration Distance We often forget the deceleration device. When deployed, it adds 3.5 feet more to the length of the lanyard. Also, the harness can stretch so the anchorage point is moved higher than the head during a fall.

In this example, the distance to be considered is not 6 feet, but 10.5 feet. 3. Height of the Worker Although apparently simple, this information is often overlooked when calculating the fall arrest distance. It is imperative to take the height of the worker under the anchorage point into account. A fall arrest system that stops a worker at 12 feet is not efficient when the lowest level is 14 feet, unless the worker is less than 2 feet tall, which is highly unlikely! On average, at least 5 feet must be added to the calculation to take into account the person's height. (Find out: How to inspect your fall harness when working-alone) 4. The Safety Factor Section 8 of the CSA Z259.16-04 standard: Design of Active Fall-Protection Systems, offers the necessary guidelines to evaluate the required clearance underneath the worker using a fall protection anchorage system. In most cases, the required minimum clearance for using a harness as a fall prevention device must be greater than 4.5 meters (15 feet).
