New Year's Eve is really special for all of us, and given these times - it might be the only special celebration some of us can count on. Yes, New Year celebrations this year might not be the same as every year, but there are still some ways to make some memories. As 2021 came to an end, everyone got very excited to enter into the new year. 2022 will be the year where everyone can start afresh. For the past two years, people have taken to their homes to abide by the social distancing rule due to the coronavirus pandemic. We have now been considering celebrating this occasion within the comfort of their homes. The New Year marks the beginning of new promises, resolutions and life decisions. The year 2021 started with hope as life-saving vaccines were rolled out to about 60 percent of the world's population. Due to the emergence of the Omicron variant has pushed the number of daily new COVID cases past the one million mark since the pandemic began in March 2020, according to a tally. On-again-off-again restrictions have prompted vocal and occasionally violent anti-lockdown, anti-vaccine and anti-government protests. The most effective steps individuals can take to reduce the spread of the COVID-19 virus is to implement the effective public health measures.
January 2022
Protect yourself and others from infection and focus on mending everything for the new year to come. Another year and another set of a whole new change will come up but what you won't have to change is the formula of hard work to get good results. Keep working hard and persevere to achieve your desired success.
Happy New Year 2022

How Smart Logistics Management Helps you Boost Performance and Security The question for every logistics company is how to maximize performance and supply chain security. The latest generation of smart logistics solutions can help, with tools for optimized vehicle and dock management, end-to-end order tracking, fleet management, employee health & safety, and more, says Harvey Zheng, Senior Solution Manager for Logistics Industry at Hikvision. Submitted by Hikvision India Supply chain globalization, the booming e-commerce market and rising demand for manufactured goods have all driven growth in the logistics industry. To take full advantage of this industry boom, logistics companies need to maximize their performance and throughput, while tracking and securing many thousands of orders and deliveries every day. But optimizing logistics operations is easier said than done. One major issue is that logistics managers often lack the real-time information they need to make fast, 20
accurate decisions. For example, they may not be able to see which facilities are experiencing performance issues, which orders have been delayed and why, or which partners are missing their delivery SLAs.
The Solution: Next-Generation Logistics Management Solutions To solve these and other challenges, more companies are turning to advanced technology for help. They're implementing the equipment, applications, software, and tools needed to gain better visibility and control over their logistics operations. January 2022 - www.visionmediahitech.com

equipment, or if they get to close to dangerous machinery, for example. • Optimize Vehicle and Dock Management: With dashboards that display the status of each loading dock in real time, which allow vehicles to load and unload more quickly and help to maximize efficiency and throughput. • Improve Goods and Order Tracking: Based on the ability to create an automated, secure, and fully trackable goods management process. This supports the secure flow of goods at one site (or across multiple sites) and includes solutions for accurate, secure goods scanning, tracking and delivery. Next-generation logistics management solutions also make the global supply chain more customer-centric and sustainable. By automating logistics processes, for instance, organizations can enhance the productivity and efficiency of their workflows; increase transparency and traceability in their supply chains; and maintain flexible and dynamic relationships with their stakeholders.
The Role of Smart Video in Logistics Management One key technology for next-generation logistics management is smart video, an evolution of the cameras that companies have been using in their warehouses, distribution centers (DCs), and yards for decades. While traditional cameras were used for security monitoring only, smart video solutions use AI, machine learning and other advanced technologies to boost efficiency, productivity, and even worker health and safety.
• Increase Site Security: Based on perimeter protection solutions that provide crystal-clear video footage, even in zero-light environments. Radar and dome cameras can also be combined to detect any unauthorized people or vehicles entering the site; and to trigger automated alerts for any suspicious movements. • Optimize Fleet Management: With on-board infrastructure that monitors vehicles' interiors and their surroundings. These systems also feature a powerful software platform for live view, video playback, GIS map locations, device health monitoring, fuel consumption checking, goods quality monitoring, emergency alarms, and more.
The Top Benefits of Smart Video By taking the decision to deploy industry leading smart video solutions as part of their logistics management environment, companies can: • Enhance Personnel Management and Health and Safety: with AI algorithms that send alerts automatically if employees are not wearing the required protective January 2022 - www.safesecuremagazine.com

3 Top Tips for your HD 'Retrot' Deployments With high-denition video, you can see more, react faster, and take better care of your people and assets. But getting the full potential of HD requires an in-depth review of your end-to-end security infrastructure. Here are our 3 top tips for making the jump to HD. Everyone knows that high definition (HD) is amazing, dramatically improving viewing quality and experience. For security, that's super important. For example, HD images can significantly assist in event investigations, particularly in terms of reviewing incidents and verifying claims. On the other hand, if video of license plates or other key evidence is grainy and blurry, it can make cases time-consuming, difficult, and expensive to solve. Likewise, for business owners that are looking for peace of mind, high-definition footage supports faster, more effective incident responses. But HD deployments don't always give the benefits customers expect, especially if it's a retrofit, meaning that cameras are being upgraded at the front end. In fact, getting an upgrade right requires an in-depth review of your end-to-end security infrastructure to ensure that HD cameras can be supported effectively.
Some HD cameras are designed to give visibility across large areas, while some focus on small spaces; and some can zoom in on a person or vehicle of interest while others can't. That's why you need to choose cameras that are right for your specific needs, whether you're looking to monitor a large parking lot, or the front yard of a family house. You can ensure you choose the right HD camera by clarifying the use case you're with your local security installer. They can help you choose the right kit and the right lens and image resolution options based on whether you need to detect, observe, recognize, or identify an object and on how far, and how clearly your cameras need to 'see'.
For example, many networks can only handle three to four Mbps (megabits per second), while HD cameras typically require 5-8 Mbps to stream videos. In such a case, the performance of HD cameras would be negatively impacted, and investments wasted. Here are our three tips for ensuring that your end-toend security infrastructure can support new HD cameras, and deliver all the benefits your organization expects:
• Select a High-Definition Camera that Suits your Needs 22
When it comes to analog… It is obvious that network cameras or IP cameras have gained a lot of popularity in the market as they are flexible to deploy, expandable, and can incorporate a number of intelligent functions based on algorithms. January 2022 - www.visionmediahitech.com
However, this doesn't mean that customers with existing analog system can't upgrade their systems to HD. On the contrary, they can deploy HD capabilities without replacing the whole infrastructure. This is made possible with the High Definition Transport Video Interface (HDTVI) standard, which is available with Turbo HD products from Hikvision. With Turbo HD, HD-over-coaxial solutions allow customers to achieve superior picture quality in the analog world.
• Choose Technologies that Maximize Storage Efficiency and Lower Costs Compared to conventional CCTV, the transmission of HD images consumes more network bandwidth and storage space. This means limiting the bitrate from HD video streams is critical. Advanced video encoding technology like the Hikvision H.265+ can solve this problem, greatly reducing the bitrate of recorded footage, as well as bandwidth and storage costs. According to a 24-hour testing in a busy café restaurant, with cameras at the same resolution and frame rate, we found that the H.264 codec yielded an average of 22.7 GB. Strikingly, Hikvision's H.265+ averaged only 3.9 GB, demonstrating an 83% improvement in storage consumption. It's also possible to maximize transmission and storage efficiency with the right video recording plan. In some cases, for example, when it's important to capture specific events in a video timeline, customers can implement a video recording plan only when the pre-defined event rules are triggered. In other cases, full-time video recordings is necessary, which requires a continuous recording plan. Alternatively, a mixed recording plan can be used, for example, for continuous video recording on weekdays and event recording on weekends, or for any other configuration of times and days.
• Make Sure your Monitor Delivers the Right HD Viewing Experience It would be a shame if you have had good quality HD security cameras and network environment, but the video images on the monitor are in low resolution. In other words, if you deployed an HD camera at 2 MP, and your monitor supports up to 720 P, ultimately you would get video January 2022 - www.safesecuremagazine.com
images with 720 P resolution, instead of 1080 P your camera is able to provide. So, to get the most out of the HD cameras and infrastructure you have, you need a monitor that is at least 1080 pixels. Preferably, it should also be equipped with proper image rendering and processing technologies to deliver true-to-life HD images. Only this way will you get the crystal-clear images that the leading HD cameras can provide. Basically, the more pixels per inch (PPI), the higher the resolution is. Therefore, with the same 1080 P resolution, monitors in a 22-inch format will provide sharper images than monitors in a 24-inch format. So, if customers need monitors for small business use, for instance, a café restaurant, a monitor with smaller size would do the job well. For larger scenarios like industrial parks and stadiums, big-sized video walls with 4K resolution are ideal.
Implement your HD retrofit plan with Hikvision From high-quality image capturing, to efficient HD image transmission and storage, HD image display and viewing, Hikvision has thought about all of these key steps and designed our solutions to optimize your HD deployment. As an IoT solution provider with video as its core competency, Hikvision provides a wide range of HD cameras featuring various resolutions and topnotch image processing technologies, which dramatically address customers' needs under different scenarios and budgets. The company's inhouse H.265+ video encoding technology ensures that HD images can be transmitted and stored in an efficient way without compromising image quality. Its display products including monitors, video walls, and the latest LED products offer unrivalled visual experience to suit every security need, indoor and outdoor. Hikvision Adds Network Bullet Cameras with 25x Optical Zoom to its DeepinView Range Improving Large-scale Facility Protection with Ultra-Long Focal Length and Outstanding Image Quality
Hikvision, an IoT solution provider with video as its core competency, recently announced the launch of a new addition to its signature AI-based DeepinView network camera range - the 4MP vari-focal bullet camera (iDS-2CD7A45G0-IZ(H)S(Y)). It is the first camera in the DeepinView range to incorporate 25x optical zoom capability which allows customers to monitor large spaces more cost-effectively than before. This makes it ideal for transportation hubs like airports and railway stations, highways and stadiums, as well as industrial settings like steel mills and chemical plants. "When we were meeting with our customers, we found that there are places where security is paramount but without the appropriate environments to install several cameras. That is always the case for open areas, for example airports and ports, and heavy industries like steel manufacturing, because power supply and network connectivity cannot be stretched to every 26
corner of the facility," says Rogers Gan, Product Manager for Network Cameras at Hikvision, "A camera that covers wider spaces and longer distances can solve this issue, providing the security necessary, even across large distances."
Why 25x Optical Zoom Makes a Big Difference Featuring a 4.7 -118 mm focal lens and 25x optical zoom, the camera is able to capture targets with clear images from a distance. This gives customers a number of benefits. • Saving on Overall Expenditure and Maintenance Costs. One camera can cover large spaces that would otherwise need several cameras to do the job. This also delivers cost savings in the future, as customers only need to pay maintenance costs for 'one' camera. January 2022 - www.visionmediahitech.com
• Improving Facility Protection and Employee Safety. Places like steel mills and metal production plants generate extremely high temperatures. That means to secure the key areas, cameras need to be deployed from a safe distance. An HD security camera with 25x zoom ensures quality footage can still be captured from a farther but safe operating environment. • Boosting Security with Strengthened Target Identification. The ultra-long focal length coupled with 4MP resolution enables images to be captured in detail. Employed with Deep Learning algorithms, the camera is able to meet more advanced security needs including perimeter protection, facial recognition, and multi-target-type recognition for people and vehicles.
clear pictures in harsh environments, and this is particularly useful for outdoor places like airports, harbors, forests and much more. To cover wide areas, the camera needs to be mounted at certain heights. Accordingly, its performance can also be impacted by exterior environments such as high winds or passing traffic, which could result in shaking and blurry images. Hikvision's new DeepinView camera is engineered with Gyro Image Stabilization (GIS) technology that minimizes the effects from vibration and allows the camera to constantly produce clear images. The camera features long range IR, capable of object detection at distances of up-to 200 meters, ensuring optimal vision at night. This is an unusual feature on a bullet camera, making it more valuable.
Reliable Outdoor Operations in Severe Weather The camera is reliable in extremely-cold weathers thanks to a built-in window heater to protect the lens from snow or ice. The window heater also prevents fogging on the lens in case of sudden temperature shifts. In this way, customers can always get crystal-

The growing popularity of Personal Safety Apps The past year has elevated consumer awareness about personal safety, from COVID-19 issues to social unrest, making safety top-of-mind and the need for personal safety solutions, even more prevalent. In addition, consumers spent more time at home, as schools closed, events were canceled and remote work increased. This prompted two major shifts that, in my opinion, most significantly opened the need for and raised the popularity of mobile safety solutions. Demand for grocery and food delivery apps surged Rise in use of app-based delivery services During the past 18 months, the use of app-based delivery services has skyrocketed. With more use comes more interactions among strangers in homes and businesses, and while the majority of these moments are completely safe and convenient, incidents are happening, ranging from uncomfortable situations to physical assaults. And, with more delivery drivers on the road, there are going to be more accidents among gig-economy workers. Based on recent estimates, food and grocery delivery are expected to remain popular, even as we get back to normal life.
High popularity of mobile security apps and wearables With more work shifting from stationary locations to working on-thego, mobile security apps or wearables can be a lifeline in all sorts of situations. It's important for these mobile safety products to be comprehensive, dynamic and designed to address the full range of people's safety and security needs, from providing simple human reassurance to dispatching emergency help. Domestic violence cases increased According to the National Domestic Violence Hotline, due to COVID19 lockdown restrictions, domestic violence rose as a result of many victims being stuck at home with their abusers, while sheltering in place and working from home. Mobile safety apps These situations necessitate the need for discreet ways for victims to call for help. Officials have endorsed mobile safety apps as a tool to help victims of domestic abuse, safely call for help, without alerting their abuser. Over the past year, the mobile safety app market has seen tremendous innovation, including more user-friendly ways to make SOS calls. Today, within a single app, a person can summon help hands-free, by saying a secret phrase, by text or by swiping a button. Extension of mobile safety into wearable devices And, users can connect with people trained to help in unsettling situations over video, which can be an effective deterrent and provide video evidence. We've also seen the extension of mobile safety into wearable devices, in order to make these devices more discreet and usable. There will always be some safety risks in our lives. However, the good news is there's no need to live in a constant state of fear. The easiest, most direct way to be prepared and ready to 'fight back' is by having a personal safety tool in your pocket, a mobile safety app that is there, when you need it most.
A Three-Point Plan for Enhancing Business Video Surveillance
Cyber threats hit the headlines every day; however digital hazards are only part of the security landscape. In fact, for many organisations - physical rather than virtual security will remain the burning priority.
The companies must consider while implementing modern-day business surveillance systems.
1) Protecting more than Premises Video surveillance systems are undoubtedly more important than ever before for a huge number of businesses across the full spectrum of public and private sector, manufacturing and service industries. One simple reason for this is the increased use of technology within those businesses. Offices, workshops, and other facilities house a significant amount of valuable and expensive equipment - from computers, and 3D printers to specialised machinery and equipment. As a result, workplaces are now a key target for thieves, and ensuring the protection of such valuable assets is a top priority. A sad reality is that some of those thieves will be employees themselves. 32
- Video Surveillance System Of course, video surveillance is often deployed to combat that threat alone, but actually, its importance goes beyond theft protection. With opportunist thieves targeting asset-rich sites more regularly, the people who work at these sites are in greater danger too. - Effective and efficient surveillance is imperative not just for physical asset protection, but also for the safety From this perspective, effective and efficient surveillance is imperative not just for physical asset protection, but also for the safety of colleagues as well. Organisations need to protect the people who work, learn or attend the premises. A video surveillance system is, therefore, a great starting point for companies looking to deter criminal activity. However, to be sure you put the right system in place to protect your hardware assets, your people, and the business itself, here are three key considerations that make for a successful deployment. January 2022 - www.visionmediahitech.com
2) Fail to prepare, and then prepare to fail Planning is the key to success, and surveillance systems are no different. Decide in advance the scope of your
step is to make sure the cameras specified are up to the job for each location. Do they have the right lens for the distance they are required to cover, for example? It is not as simple as specifying one type of camera and deploying it everywhere. - Devices that can use multiple power sources, Direct Current, or Power over Ethernet well are far more versatile You have to consider technical aspects such as the required level of visual fidelity and whether you also need two-way audio at certain locations? Another simple consideration is how the devices are powered. Devices that can use multiple power sources, Direct Current or Power over Ethernet as well are far more versatile and reliable. Answers to these questions and a lot more need to be uncovered by an expert, to deliver a best-of-breed solution for the particular site.
3) Flexibility Breeds Resilience Understanding exactly what you need is the start. Ensuring you can install, operate and manage your video surveillance system is the next step. Solutions that are simple to install and easy to maintain will always be favoured - for example, cameras that have multiple sources of power can be vital for year-round reliability.
desired solution. Each site is different and the reality is that every solution is different too. There is no 'one-size-fitsall solution and only by investing time on the exact specification can you arrive at the most robust and optimal solution. For example, organisations need to consider all the deployment variables within the system's environment. What is the balance between indoor and outdoor settings; how exposed to the elements are the outdoor cameras; what IP rating to the need? A discussion with a security installer will help identify the dangerous areas that need to be covered and the associated best sites for camera locations. - Camera Coverage After determining location and coverage angles, indoors and outdoors, the next January 2022 - www.safesecuremagazine.com
Alongside the physical aspect of any installation, there is also the software element that needs to be considered. The last thing organisations need is a compatibility headache once all their cameras and monitoring stations are in place. Selecting cameras and equipment with the flexibility to support a variety of different operating systems and software is important not just for the days following the installation, but also to futureproof the solution against change. - Easy does it Once the system is up and running, the real work of video surveillance begins. Therefore, any organisation considering deploying a system should look to pick one that makes the dayto-day operation as easy as possible to manage. And again that is all about the set-up. - Cameras can also provide alerts if they have been tampered with or their settings changed The most modern systems and technology can deliver surveillance systems that offer smarter detection, enhanced activity reporting so you learn more about your operations, and also make off-site, remote management easy to both implement and adjust as conditions change. 33
For example, camera software that immediately notifies controllers when certain parameters are met-like motion detection that monitors a specific area for unauthorised access. Cameras can also provide alerts if they have been tampered with or their settings changed without proper authorisation. - Remote Management of HD footage What's more, the days of poor quality or unreliable transfer of video are long gone. The high-quality HD footage can be captured, stored, and transferred across networks without any degradation, with hard drives or cloud-based systems able to keep hundreds of days of highquality recordings for analysis of historical data. Finally, the best surveillance solutions also allow for secure remote management not just from a central control room, but also from personal
devices and mobile apps. All this delivers 'always-on' security and peace of mind. - The watchword in security Modern video surveillance takes organisational security to the next level. It protects physical assets, ensures workplace and workforce safety, and helps protect the operations, reputation, and profitability of a business. However, this is not just an 'off-the-shelf purchase'. It requires proper planning in the form of site surveys, equipment and software specifications, as well as an understanding of operational demands and requirements. Investing time in planning will help businesses realise the best dividends in terms of protection. Ultimately, that means organisations should seek to collaborate with vendors who offer site surveys-they know their equipment best, your needs, and can work with you to create the perfect solution.

Guide to Buying a Vehicle Barriers by Arindam Bhadra Whether you need to enhance security at a building or increase safety at a specific locale or job site, you will need vehicle boom barriers to help you achieve your goal. Access control is the mechanism that is used for controlling, restricting and monitoring the movement of assets, vehicles and people in or out any building. A drop arm Automatic Boom Barrier is commonly used for controlling the unauthorized entries of any personnel while enforcing access control system. It assures that one token one-person policy is followed 24 x 7. The levels of security that a boom barrier offers depends on style and type of products being used. For example, if the Automatic boom barrier is used with a lockable sliding gate, then it is easier to keep a check on each and every person or vehicle entering. You should know that these are not meant to be used as a pedestrian passage, as a boom barrier is a horizontal bar that is positioned on a pivot that moves up and down. This technology can also be integrated with other systems like visitor management, ANPR, CCTV, BMS and more which eventually saves costs and offer better security services. If you are a system integrator or gate automation installer or even a gate barrier distributor (like SSA Integrate), it is important to know how to select the best gate barrier system on behalf of the customer. Majority of the datasheets and catalogues are not really useful unless you already know what you are getting into. 36
What are Vehicle Barriers? Vehicle barriers refer to any device that causes cars to slow down, usually purposefully but not necessarily. They are most often used in areas with high pedestrian traffic, especially when children and seniors make up a large portion of that pedestrian traffic, such as schools/ roads zones. However, you can find them in many places, including highway mediums, parking lots, railroad crossings, commercial districts, private communities, and construction sites.
What are Boom Barriers? A boom barrier, also known as a boom gate, is a bar, or pole pivoted to allow the boom to block vehicular or pedestrian access through a controlled point. Typically the tip of a boom gate rises in a vertical arc to a near vertical position. Boom gates are often counterweighted, so the pole is easily tipped.
What are the primary benefits of an Automatic Boom Barrier? 1. Enhanced Security: Security is one of the most crucial things nowadays for residential and commercial buildings. When there is boom barrier installed, the gatekeeper can ensure that entry is given to the people based on their credentials. If a particular vehicle is blacklisted from entering the premises, then its entry can be easily blocked. 2. Traffic Flow can be Managed: For controlling the flow of traffic on and off your property boom gates are the best option. If your space has limited parking, then also boom barrier can be a great help to maintain the number of vehicles. When the parking is full, you can prevent any more vehicles from entering the premises. January 2022 - www.visionmediahitech.com
3. Efficient Use of Space: With a boom gate, you can make the efficient use of space because installing sliding gates or swinging gates needs larger area. A boom barrier requires a small amount of vertical space in order to swing upwards. The most important thing is to get the boom barrier installed from a service that does the job once and for all.
What you should consider before buying a Vehicle Barrier? At SSA Integrate, we always strive to share our research and learnings with our customers and the gate automation professional community. Here is our attempt to provide you with a checklist that captures the essential questions and the likely answers to look for. This guide must help you avoid the common mistakes and traps that the uninformed fall into. The questions are presented under 1. What is your use case? 2. What are the physical attributes? 3. How do you want to control access to the facility? 4. Safety features to consider 5. Additional features to consider
What is your Applications? Before purchasing a boom gate, one has to decide where it will be installed, and the operating model. There are boom gates that are specifically designed for a simple application like parking areas, traffic control to the large railway and industrial crossings. It is necessary to understand the application, space availability and use frequency.
challenge of limited space and high-frequency usage. Most of these structures need continuous opening and closing of barrier gates. Some of the must-have requirements for these facilities are 100% duty cycle, arm articulation and easy access control system integration. Magnetic Access Pro barrier has 3.5m width boom and improved opening and closing time, that can be adjusted to 1.3, 1.8, or 2.5 seconds independently of one another. For high frequency wider space For the installation at traffic junctions and toll gates on highways, there is a requirement for barriers that support the lifting of extended boom lengths. They are required to block access to tunnels and lanes but also to manage traffic junctions with alternating traffic flows. Some of the must-have features you should look for include - 100% duty cycle, Traffic lamp integration, support for extended beam sizes. Magnetic Traffic H1 Horizontal Barrier has multiple application for high frequency wider space. Magnetic Access XXL Barrier are excellent for extrawide or multi-lane entrances and comes with MHTM™ drive capability. With its barrier width of up to 10m and the optional security grating or security grating with climb-over prevention Access XXL offers range of functions. Magnetic Access XL2 Barrier are ideal for extrawide or multi-lane entrances and comes with optional security grating or security grating with climb-over prevention. The opening and closing time for Access XL2 can be set at 6, 8, or 10 seconds independent of one another. For long life and energy efficiency Commercial use barrier gates are used very frequently and require constant energy supply. Two most important features required by the barriers operating in such operational environments are long operational life and energy efficiency.
If you are System Integrator ask your Customer 1.Is it for commercial or industrial or residential use? 2.Is it for heavy traffic or low traffic area? For high-frequency and limited space Buying a barrier gate for under-ground or multistoried car parking lots presents the January 2022 - www.safesecuremagazine.com
What is the Duty Cycle? The duty cycle for an automated gate operator is the number of times the gate can open and close without overheating the motor. Duty cycle is normally expressed in percentage. 100% duty cycle is meant for continuous use, eg: high intensive use cases like a shopping mall, toll plaza etc. 37
There are two most common categorisations: Residential (40-70% duty cycle) and commercial (100% duty cycle). As you can imagine, a gate barrier in a mall will be used much more time than one in an apartment. When calculating the required duty cycle, calculate for the worst-case scenario.
If you are system integrator ask Your Customer 1. What is the average usage (open/close cycle) per day? (consider worst-case scenario)
• The Electro-mechanical units require at least 220v/single-phase power, which is typically 12-15 more amps of power than what the hydraulic motor requires.
What are the Physical Attributes? Arm length Boom gates come with different beam lengths and boom barrier shapes to suit the width of the passage you wish to control. Beam length from 2 metres to 12 to 13 metres, which are especially suitable for use when companies have oversized vehicles, such as mine sites and rail crossings. They come in round or rectangular shapes, wherein rectangular is a bit more expensive
What is Barrier Operator? Barrier operators mostly come housed in the barrier body mounted on the floor or foundation plate. The barrier operator usually comes with a motor that operates on either hydraulic or electromechanical motors. Some latest products like FAAC b680H also have hybrid motor technology with a Hydraulic Brushless motor in one barrier operator. Hydraulic motors are usually more suitable for heavy-duty, high frequency usage. Hydraulic vs Electromechanical Motor Hydraulic Motor • Hydraulic controllers are very reliable and pose very few maintenance issues if installed properly. • They are a very effective deterrent in case a vehicle runs into the barrier or in stopping tailgating vehicle. • Cold can be a problem; too cold weather can cause oil thickening in the hydraulic unit. However, this can be solved with a temperature control unit. Electromechanical Motor • The electromechanical unit is much quieter than the hydraulic motor. • A bit slower than Hydraulic but they offer more control, one can set variable speed for how quickly the beam rises. • Most security professionals find the electromechanical unit easier to maintain. 38
If you are Customer ask Your Vendor / System Integrator 1. What is the drive-way width? Arm articulation Arm articulation makes it possible to articulate the rigid beam to a maximum height according to the ceiling. They are used in parking garages or in areas with limited or low overhead clearances.
If you are system integrator ask Your Customer 1. What is the height of the installation area or overhead clearance available? January 2022 - www.visionmediahitech.com
How do you want to Control? Barrier Access Control: Another most important requirement you need to decide is how you want to control the boom barrier - with reader, remote controller, or push button. They can be configured with UHF readers and tags, with a control switch for security officers, remote controllers and receivers, or with push buttons or biometrics. Biometrics Readers: The barriers can be controlled with biometricreaders like fingerprint, face, Iris options. Swipe Card Readers: Access control via RFID cards. Type: Magnetic, proximity cards, and proximity cards with a magnetic stripe, key-chain FOB. Support for GSM Module: This module helps you open the gate barrier remotely by making a call to the SIM inserted in the GSM module. UHF Readers & Tags: This feature allows the barrier to be opened when a vehicle approaches the barrier with authenticated tags. Remote Controller & Receiver: The barrier gates operated using the remote controller and a radio receiver installed in the barrier. Switch to Exit Button: For the facility security team to control the to and fro access. If you are system integrator ask Your Customer 1. What kind of access control is required to the facility - biometric or remote or ANPR or RFID tag or swipe card based? 2. Is the entry/exit point manned, does the security team need an exit button for the manual opening?
Safety features to Consider January 2022 - www.safesecuremagazine.com
Anti-Crushing Sensor Gate boom barriers feature safety components like sensors for automatic detection of approaching vehicles, anti-crushing sensors that reverse the beam on impact if the barrier boom automatically closes on the vehicle. The anticrushing sensor only stops repeated impact only after hitting the object once. That's why you need to have an additional detection mechanism in place-Photocells. Photocells Photocells (motion sensors) are electronic devices that improve security by automatically detecting vehicles or obstacles to enable automatic rising of booms. This infrared setup will have a transmitter and receiver at each of the ends of the driveway and whenever an obstacle is detected the barrier will prevent the gate from closing and raise the barrier boom. Micro Drive Break: The barriers can also be equipped with a flange set (FLVB02) is designed especially for the parking industry. It enables the ejection of the whole barrier boom after it was hit by a vehicle. The beam can be simply reinstalled after the crash. Loop Detector: Barrier gates come with other solutions like vehicle detection loops (inductive loop), which are installed on the barrier that detects vehicles and passing or arriving at a certain point. The loop detectors are connected to create a magnetic field, and the vehicle is recognised when it enters this field.
Barrier Housing The barrier housing is attached by four foundation anchors via two attachment profiles. The housing of Magentic barrier is painted RAL 2000 and comes with an IP 54 protection rating.
Battery Back-up If you want the barrier to operate even at the time of main power failure. Look for a continuous duty cycle(in hours) supported by the battery backup.
Opening and Closing speed Most conventional barrier gates provide running speed from 1.5 seconds to 6 seconds. 39
should be protected from dust, water and other solid objects. Look for the international standard Ingress Protection(IP) ratings like IP 54 or IP 56.
Temperature Range If you are system integrator ask Your Customer 1.What is the average opening time? 2.Look for 1.5 seconds+
Again consider the worst-case scenario, watch out for maximum and minimum temperature tested and supported. Look for -20°C ÷ +55°C.
The shape of the boom/beam
Integrated flashing traffic light and reflector kit
Magnetic offers a variety of boom lengths, numerous extras like illumination elements and expansion sets, allowing the tailored implementation of Magnetic barriers for various uses. The booms come with skirt elements made of plastic and aluminium, over-climb protection and break-away flange. The types of booms offered include Varioboom, Microboom and Articulated booms. Also the round booms and soft booms. SSA Integrate will guide you what actually you need.
These optional modules help especially at night.
Support for modular beam/boom What if the barrier needs more length than the standard beam length? When there is support for modular beams, the total length can be extended. Look for a boom extension set.
Colour of the gate barrier Many manufacturers support your preferred colour for the enclosure. Ask for the supported colours.
Anti-vandalism valve or Antipanic unit Most barriers come with safety features that stop forced opening or closing, and the anti-vandalism valve protects the hydraulic system in case the beam is forced. While an anti-panic unit is used for the manual opening of the barrier arm in the event of a power failure. Since an anti-vandalism valve prevents manual/forced movement of the beam, both anti-vandalism and anti-panic units cannot be installed together in a barrier system.
Pedestals The pedestal is required when you need support for holding the access control device. For truck entry gates you need a dual height pedestal while a single height pedestal is used for car access. SSA Integrate will give you perfect solution as per your needs.
International standards or regulations Look for compliance with international standards (European/ISO) when it comes to safety and quality.
Maintenance and Operating cost You can always buy a cheap gate barrier but watch out for maintenance and operating cost. Operational cost is as important as the capital cost not just in terms of money but the availability of spare parts and technicians.
Enclosure rating Gate barriers are of course installed outside and the motors and the other internal components 40

Preamble 'A small fire which started in a plastic scrap at a warehouse near Sanauri Adda, Patiala on night of October 31st quickly became a major accident. Plastic scrap acted as a readymade fuel for the fire. Though, no one was hurt in the incident, a major tragedy was averted due to presence of mind and immediate action from local fire services. It took as many as 23 fire tenders around 11 hours to control the blaze.' A news like this is increasingly finding place in the everyday newspaper. As India is witnessing rapid industrial growth with newer industrial hubs flourishing day by day, the need for fire protection is also increasing significantly. Many of the industries are moving towards larger factories, bigger warehouses and larger confined areas for critical application. High expansion foam systems definitely answers to these constraints and requirement making it one of key system whose time has arrived to make Indian industry safer. With improvement in India's rank in ease of doing business, new and more industrial hubs are being built and flourishing with increased FDI having favourable environment for industries. With this new trend in industrialization, there is a considerable increase in investment in industries and sectors such as Petrochemical, Chemical, Pharma, Automobile, Aviation, Oil & Gas, and Warehouses etc. As per latest data from GOI's national investment promotion and facilitation 42
agency, India is the 5th largest market in terms of aircraft passengers (domestic and international), we are 3rd largest biotech destination in the Asia Pacific Region having 9 Biotech parks, we are 6th in the world in Chemicals sales and contributes 3% to global chemical industry, we are 2nd largest refiner in Asia having 4.56% CAGR for Gas consumption, we are 3rd largest pharmaceuticals industry in the world by volume and 4th largest vehicle market having 40% share in global R&D. With this there is significant increase in chemical and petrochemical warehouses, aircraft hangers and LNG consumption, automobile manufacturing etc. there are the industries which has large number of critical application and processes including confined areas for machineries, storage of materials and products, process areas etc. Critical industrial applications and process areas are largely confined structures and size of which varies as per process requirement. These are termed critical as they handle the vital process part of any industrial processing and may contain high value machineries, materials, products or process areas etc. Whenever a fire breaks out in any such critical confined area, we depend primarily on a firefighting system that detects & deploys quickly, is effective and safe for personnel. Generally and majorly it includes initial water sprinkler/spray systems that immediately detects the fire on occurrence and deploys the water application quickly. However the purpose of these primary systems is limited to their immediate activation and to contain the further fire spread till any emergency personnel are deployed at site to January 2022 - www.visionmediahitech.com
HIGH EXPANSION FOAM SYSTEMS FOR CRITICAL CONFINED AREAS
take the fire further to its complete extinguishment using various applications that includes hand nozzles, monitor equipment etc. Many a times the firefighting at these critical areas with such equipment has limitations of space or resources availability during actual fire scenario.
INDUSTRY TALK High expansion foam system is uniquely placed to address these challenges. Introduction to high expansion foam system High expansion foam system was first developed and experimented with in Buxton, England through the Safety in Mines Research Establishment in order to cater to a difficult solution of quickly extinguishing fires in coal mines in the year 1950s. The objective of the system was to quickly flood the available space with expanded foam to smother the fire. High expansion system creates foam at an expansion ratio in excess of 200:1. The effectiveness of High expansion foam systems is very high as it attacks fire in 4 ways 1. Smothers the fire 2. Insulates of the combustibles from air 3. Penetrating effect of the water/foam solution 4. Cooling
Understanding the criticality and value of assets protected under these critical areas, there is a need of having a reliable and fixed systems that not only includes detection and initial application but also has an ability to extinguish the fire completely and quickly minimizing the damage to process area saving larger costs. High expansion foam systems is a perfect solution for such hazards and conditions. High expansion systems include fixed as well as portable equipment and aim to create foam at an expansion ratio in excess of 400:1. As the systems are designed in consideration of actual fire contingency, hence the application and operation of firefighting is available without any resource or space constraints. This helps in faster extinguishment of system and in turn limiting the commercial losses as time a factor that decides quantum of loss in these scenarios. These areas are demand a specialized solution which is fast, effective, and cost efficient. Conventionally, larger covered/confined areas are protected by deluge sprinkler system or foam water sprinkler system. Both these systems are designed to contain the fire rather than extinguish the fire. Also these conventional system are water intensive thus require large water storage and availability. When in many of the parts of the country, industries are struggling to meet their process water demand, conventional systems stretches this further and intensifies the problem. Working Principle & Conclusion High expansion foam system equipment such as generator works by blowing foam solution against a net or screen, creating many large bubbles, allowing a blanket of foam to take up a large volume.
The complete system comprised of storage unit, proportioning unit and discharge units. Storage and proportioning units can be installed closer or away from actual application area depending on space availability and system hydraulic calculations. The storage unit functions for storage of high expansion foam whereas proportioning unit function for proportioning of foam as per foam concentrate composition in a ratio of 1% to 3%. The size and quantity of storage is based on proportioning ratio, operation time, volume of confined area and total foam solution demand of discharge equipment. The capacity of discharge equipment is selected based on minimum operation time to completely fill the volume hence making these system highly effective in quick extinguishment.

The environmental impact of the fluorocarbon surfactant used in some firefighting foams has been criticized in recent years. High expansion foams do not contain this surfactant and are overall low in toxicity making them environment friendly. 44
As High expansion foam has large volume it covers a large area quickly. The high expansion foam hence are effective in extinguishing fire and insulation of material surface. Because of presence of large number of bubbles and very light weight nature, it contains a large amount of air and January 2022 - www.visionmediahitech.com
hence it is not recommended for outdoor use or confined indoor areas. Another limitation includes its non-ability to be projected. For generation of High expansion foam, equipment used includes portable and fixed foam generators. The water content in expanded foam compared to low expansion version is minimal. High expansion foams are unique as their expansion ratio is very high - more
Low expansion foam 1m3 of low-ex foam solution (foam + water) can practically only expand 10m3 of foam (expansion 10)
than 200 times of its original concentrate volume. That means the quantity of foam concentrate required to cover larger space is very little unlike the low expansion foams. In the event of system activation, the entire volume of these spaces are quickly filled with expanded foam in a matter of minutes, eliminating oxygen and cooling the fire. The quick expansion of this foam in these high risk environments can stop and limit major catastrophes, saving lives and assets.
High expansion foam 1m3 of hi-ex foam solution (foam + water) can expand to 1000m3 of foam (expansion 1000)
Fig.4 Difference showing effectiveness of Low Vs High Expansion Foam
Applications The criticality of highlighting the new trends for high expansion foam system application arises with recent major incidents resulting in large scale damages that includes critical and larger areas such as Aircraft hangars, cellars, and large enclosed spaces, Cable tunnels & ducts, high flammable liquid storage, Gas turbine generators, LNG facilities, Hazardous Chemical and waste storage, Machinery spaces, Mining Paper product & tire warehouses, Power stations, Ship engine rooms, Transformer rooms etc. The applicable generally includes dry product fires or within the premises/contained areas with mixed fire risks (class A and class B fire) Some major fire incidents recently hit the news headline that includes major fire incidents in chemical warehouses, product storage warehouse, process areas, LNG gas etc. (Refer the news publishing as mentioned in references). Considering the assets under fire, the cumulative effect on operation and losses are huge. High expansion foam system can solve this problem and limit these losses to a larger extent. Apart from these, high expansion foam systems also finds application in power stations and transformer rooms. Hence overall these systems can act as a solution to wide range of fire scenarios covering multiple industries. High expansion system is one of the most effective system for suppressing LNG vapours after accidental spill. Foam is an effective method for reducing and January 2022 - www.safesecuremagazine.com
controlling fire intensity and decreasing LNG vapour generation. It also has an effective application in suppression of ammonia vapours which is a part of ammonia storage facility in all fertilizer industries. Medium and high expansion foams are suitable for liquefied gas spills in tank farms both for fire extinguishment and vapour suppression purpose. The surface of the foam in contact with the liquid forms an icy appearing slush which insulates and protects the upper layers of foam, and that in turn acts by reducing the evaporation rate from the liquid. Another important advantage is the relatively low amount of heat transmitted to the liquid by water draining from high expansion foams.
Conclusion Hence considering the overall reliability, effectiveness & cost implication the high expansion foam systems proves to be highly efficient for fire extinguishment of critical confirmed areas. With the increasing need of high quality and most effective systems, high expansion systems is a need of an hour to protect high assets in confined areas. As the similar systems can be extrapolated for wider industry application, these systems proves to be one of the best in class.

CHALLENGES & CONQUESTS OF FIRE FIGHTERS
The Alarming Fire Realities in Mumbai Mumbai! Alarmed by the many fire incidents that have occurred over the past few years it's time for Mumbaikars to take cognizance that fire makes for a good servant but a bad master. Unfazed by the prospect of losing life, our fire fighters' focus is always on dousing fire, saving human life & property. The fire fighters use the principles of engineering and science to defend people from risky scenarios. Their job is one of the most challenging & daring professions that demands utmost precision, planning, carefulness, meticulousness and lots of commitment that too with very limited time to prepare and yet they aim to carry out the work flawlessly incessantly. This field deals with the avoidance of fire. It also deals with diluting the casualty which occurs on day-to-day basis by allowing safety measures and growing the parameters of standard of living, thereby reflecting higher efficiency levels of performance. Having said so sprinklers too play a crucial role containing local fire. Smoke detectors and sprinklers are the real first responders in case of high-rise fires. The fire fighters wear their hearts on their sleeves & are very passionate about their job. Fire fighters possess know-how of tackling fires- avoiding an outbreak, controlling it & surviving it. Having said so, they have been known to fall short of luck on some occasions, and injuring themselves during rescue operations. Sometimes even at the cost of their lives. Fire fighters too have their family just like ours but they are determined to risk their lives against all odds to save common man, birds, animals, property, etc. Issues related to fire safety had taken a centre stage after Kamala Mills, Lower Parel fire incident in December 2017. Though the Mumbai Fire Brigade took action against restaurants & hotels for noncompliance, the ESIC hospital blaze highlighted lack 46
of fire safety measures at public buildings. Another fire broke out at the ESIC hospital at evening just two days after a blaze claimed 10 lives, when a meter box caught fire. As per reports around 309 fire incidents have been reported between 1st to 20th December 2018 across the city. Source: DNA, 21st December 2018, Mumbai.
After the fire incidence at Sargam building in Chembur, the Mumbai Fire Brigade inspected around 377 structures across the city between 27th- 30th Dec. 2018. Of the 377 structures inspected, 346 structures were found to be complying with fire safety norms. Necessary action was taken by Mumbai Fire Brigade to the ones who had flouted the safety measures. In this year alone, the Mumbai Fire Brigade has inspected over 32,000 structures which included residential buildings, restaurant, commercial establishments, malls, cinema halls, etc. Out of these, MFB has served notices to 17,730 structures for non-compliance. The MFB has commenced legal proceedings in 9,407 cases & sealed 32 premises. Source: DNA, 1st January 2019, Mumbai.
Over 300 Mumbaikars have lost their lives in fires over the last six years. Seven among them were firefighters. There have been over 29,000 instances of fire across the city since 2012. A whopping 710 cases have been recorded till May 2018 alone. Source: The Quint.
As per the draft Development Plan unveiled by the BMC, if 100 percent FSI is consumed, a built-up area of 56,808 hectares can be added on to the city in the next 20 years, most of it vertically. This is equivalent to the size of 6,380 Oval Maidans! 90 meters is the reach of the firefighting snorkel van the department has purchased 18 meters is the expected length of the van, which means it will require a large radius for turning. Issues related to fire safety had once again taken a centre stage after the Crystal Towers at Mumbai's upscale Parel area in August 2018 till One Avighna Park, Parel - Lalbaug in October 2021. These fire incidents & many more have turned the spotlight on fire safety in high-rises buildings. An article in Mumbai Live states, Mumbai: In 10 Years, Nearly 50,000 Fire Incidents Reported. RTI activist Shakeel Ahmed Sheikh had filed an RTI application with the Mumbai Fire Brigade seeking information on the number of fire incidents in Mumbai from 2008 to 2018. The Mumbai Fire Brigade has informed RTI activist Shakeel Ahmed Sheikh that there have been a total of 48,434 fire incidents in Mumbai in the last 10 years between 2008 to 2018. The cause of most incidents, which is about 32,516 fires, is reported to be short circuit. As many as 1,116 fires have started due to gas cylinder leakage. In addition, 11,889 fire incidents have been reported to various other reasons. As per the RTI information, property damage to the tune of INR 89,04,86,102 has occurred in these fire incidents. • A total of 9,887 fires broke out in Circle-I, including 325 skyscrapers, 1,546 residential buildings, 987 commercial buildings & 75 huts. • The highest number of 10,719 fires were reported in Circle-II, including 129 skyscrapers, January 2022 - www.safesecuremagazine.com

Responsibilities & Duties of Firemen A fireman's responsibilities extend beyond fighting fires; they are also responsible for controlling the risk to people and properties, saving lives, and carrying heavy equipments. Firemen are also responsible for maintaining their job skills and equipments when not responding to emergencies. They must engage in practice drills and ongoing training in areas of fire prevention and control, as well as the preservation of life and property. These responsibilities and more are required during time at the station when firemen are not actively engaged in fire fighting at a hazardous site. A fireman is charged with duties ranging from saving lives to keeping fire fighting equipments clean. At a moment's notice, a fireman must be ready to perform job functions such as rescuing people or animals from burning or collapsed buildings, fighting fires and providing emergency medical assistance. Firemen also work with police, providing general assistance at accident and crime scenes. Firemen who aid in controlling and extinguishing forest fires sometimes parachute into areas vehicles can't reach and assist in creating and maintaining fire lines. Other common duties include: Carrying hoses, climbing ladders, hooking hoses up to hydrants, breaking through walls, protecting those in danger due to a fire, Ensuring integrity of the property ablaze. Challenges & Difficulties faced by the firemen • While extinguishing fires that occur at higher floors of skyscrapers the major concern is Wind Velocity & deployment at such heights while dousing fires in tall buildings. 47
• Velocity of wind is another challenge. The wind displaces the water from a high-pressure hosepipe. • Lack of time to assess the fire condition in the little time fire fighters have as a first-responder during a fire. • Lack of good number of snorkel vans. • Limitations on the height of the snorkel vans as compared to the height of the skyscrapers • Lack of proper ventilation leads to dense smoke being accumulated reducing the vision. • Arranging for uninterrupted water supply. • Lack of motivation in common man to join MFB. • Illegal parking of vehicles obstructing fire engine's movement. • Obstruction in fire escape staircases by local residents stacking unwanted materials. • Heavy vehicular traffic during pick hours. • Narrow lanes in town side making life tough for MFB team reaching at the destination. • Lack of turning radius for the MFB snorkel van in especially in congested areas. • Areas like Nariman Point, BKC and Back-bay are on reclaimed land and there are chances of caveins due to the high pressure of the vehicle's jack if the snorkel is used at these locations. Source: https://www.mid-day.com
• Also very difficult to use these vans in areas where the gap between two buildings is less. • Weaker wireless signals are a big impediment above the 20th floor. • In absence of sound functional fire safety system the firemen have to physically carry the firefighting equipment up the stairs to as high as 20 floors or even higher, to the floor where the fire has broken out. • The tallest turntable ladder available with the Mumbai Fire brigade is 90m long, which can access up to 30-32 floors of a high-rise. However, the city is rapidly seeing a spurt in 60-70 storey buildings. "In such cases, the building's own robust internal fire fighting system is the only way to effective fight fires, or prevent them. • The 90-m ladder owned by the Mumbai fire brigade weighs 52 tonnes. Mumbai's roads and flyovers are designed to handle a load of around 60 tonnes, as there are utility chambers under all of them. Some roads in the island city have century-old arch drains under them. These are few life-threatening challenges that skyscrapers may pose today and in the coming days. Risks Involved: Wooden furniture burns to produce nitrogen and 48
carbon monoxide, making the air toxic. Inhaling such smoke could cause death due to asphyxiation. Unaware about risks on the other side of the fire barrier. Sudden blast of cylinders, flammable materials stored, etc. Fire fighters are susceptible to burns and crush injuries from collapsing structures and many more unseen risks are faced by fire fighters. It is necessary that we not only recognize the efforts taken by our fire fighters, but also integrate fire awareness within the very social fabric of our culture. Building's own robust internal fire fighting system is the only way to effectively fight fires, or prevent them with smoke detection system planned & installed as per NBC standards which plays the first responder's role till such time fire fighters arrive & commence dousing fire. Also as a daksh nagarik we should avoid parking vehicles other than parking slots properly marked for parking thereby maintaining unobstructed passage of snorkel vans to reach the incident spot well intime. In addition to this we should avoid use of combustible materials in our interiors & enhance use of fire rated - fire retardant materials, unobstructed floor passages & exits, a big NO to storing flammable materials in residence, office or exits which can assist trapped people to evacuate safely incase of untoward incidents. Also conduct timely periodic inspections to ensure that by-laws are not flouted post approval of the plan or once the building is occupied. Thus periodic inspections are critical for high-rises or any premise. Fire and life safety mechanisms like Smoke Detection System, Sprinkler Systems, unhindered access to fire exits and staircases are some of the most basic measures that need to be repeatedly examined by competent fire inspectors/authorities. Mock drills been equally important to create awareness among the end users with knowledge necessary for emergency preparedness in a high-rise building which indicates early warning through an alarm or voice communication system, familiarity of evacuation route, use of fire extinguishers, etc. Practising the same through Periodic Mock Drills is a must for every premises. This will reduce loss of human lives in a panic situation. Mock drills can prove to be life-saving incase of any such untoward incident, where occupants are trained to evacuate themselves safely even before help reaches them. These mock drills will be only effective if and only if the premises fire fighting systems are properly operational and in working condition at all times. This can be made sure by periodic third party Audits for keeping the Fire Safety Systems in check, up & running. The dues we owe to the selfless act of these fire fighters will only be realized when we, the citizens of Bharat, sensitize and educate ourselves, thereby safeguarding our gen-next with fire and safety awareness.

Selecting Hand and Arm Protection What are some of the most important factors to consider when choosing hand and arm protection? Of course, the first thing to consider is your application. Any cut, puncture, abrasion, heat, impact or other hazards involved in the job will change what you choose. Knowing the type and level of protection you need is an important first step, but it can be more complicated than that. For example, if your team is experiencing cut injuries, it's best to think about more than just cut level. What may look like a cut could actually be the result of a puncture because it's human nature to jerk your hand away when injured, causing a laceration. Factor in variables such as metal burrs that may puncture even a high cut-resistant glove, and investigate all options such as special reinforcements that might make gloves last longer or even special palm coatings to improve grip and abrasion performance. Remember, too, that gloves with the same ratings can still vary slightly in their protection, so it can be helpful to test 50
gloves and sleeves in your working environment. Edge testing by a safety professional can be the best way to try a product without putting anyone at risk. This involves filling a glove or sleeve with something such as closed-cell foam to simulate a hand or arm and then running the item over the work hazard, ideally with more force than is expected under normal working conditions. Perhaps just as important as protection is comfort. Studies have shown that up to 70% of workers who suffer a hand injury weren't wearing gloves during the incident. The culprit in many of these cases isn't that the company didn't provide the right personal protective equipment, but that it didn't provide PPE that was comfortable enough for workers to keep it on. Ironically, it's possible to end up with a higher injury rate when you overprotect your workers with gloves that are too thick, hot or bulky for the job. This problem is now much easier to solve with the advent of technologies that offer extremely high cut protection in lighter, cooler fabrics. Instead of the bulky, cumbersome gloves of the past, you can get gloves that provide protection as high that fit with the comfort of a second skin in fabrics that are as much as 30% lighter than comparable gloves. Other materials provide coreless cut protection to keep workers with sensitive skin from developing contact dermatitis, and are actually cool to the touch to keep hands and arms comfortable. Finding the best gloves and sleeves for your workers can be a daunting task for busy safety managers. Remember, you always have the option to call in a safety expert who can evaluate your facility, recommend changes to how you do various jobs to make them safer and guide you through choosing the best PPE for the job. What are some recent innovations in Women’s Footwear that Workers and Safety pros should consider? New technologies can provide workers with a custom fit to address the unique size, shape, arch height and pressure points of each foot. Material innovations have played a significant role in the creation of safety footwear that’s remarkably lightweight yet performs well under tough conditions.
Many companies, trade schools and organizations are working to enhance their programs as more women join the trades. These actions include creating apprenticeship programs and scholarships, as well as expanding product lines, to support a more diverse workforce. There’s no better time, as diversifying the workforce and attracting new talent of all backgrounds are critical to closing shortage gaps and ensuring continued progress. Although many initiatives that support women in the trades exist and should be considered, one of the first steps is to review Personal Protective Equipment programs that offer proper fit while keeping everyone safe and comfortable on the job. Safety Footwear, in particular, is a personal and crucial purchase for workers. Historically, it’s often been even more difficult for female workers to find the right footwear that fits well and still provides the comfort and protection needed on the job. Footwear manufacturers are closely examining the differences and introducing purpose-built options for women, offering new technologies and enhancing styles to achieve a true female fit. From the arch to the heel, a woman’s foot is different than a man’s foot. Footwear providers and product teams have the opportunity to develop footwear that fits properly by using gender-specific lasts (a foot-shaped form) and patterns to ensure the best fit possible. In addition, the right size and width of a work boot can help ensure all-day comfort and minimize the chances of injury. 52
For example, the use of nonmetallic safety toe caps can help lighten the weight of a shoe or boot while still providing the same level of safety as steel toe caps without the extra weight and bulk, allowing for more all-day comfort. In addition, many new lightweight outsole and upper materials offer superior protection and durability without sacrificing performance. Further, more breathable components are being added to safety footwear. New cooling textiles are being used as lining in shoes and boots to make a long day on the job more comfortable for workers in warmer climates or hot work environments. Freezing temperatures, on the other hand, require insulation, and paper-thin aluminum technology that reflects and retains body heat is being implemented in some modern safety footwear – adding warmth without bulk. As the industry evolves, new innovations – from lighter materials to the right textiles – continue to help safety professionals. And above all, recognizing diversity and achieving a variety of fits not only can make the purchasing process easier, but support a more diverse workforce and safety for all. Hand Tools: What's the right size for you? “In a normal workday, you may work with these tools for six or more hours," the website states. "Using the right size handle can reduce fatigue and increase productivity, improve the quality of your work, and reduce the risk for hand and wrist problems.”
Determining your Hand size Before using a hand tool, perform a few measurements to help you select the tools that are the right size for you. Start by determining your hand's length, grip and palm size. To find out the length of your hand, measure the distance from the fold in your wrist below your palm to the tip of your middle finger. For grip, 20 percent of your hand length equals your grip diameter, For palm size, measure the widest part of your palm. Once you've figured out these measurements, it's time to put them to good use. Picking a Tool When picking a hand tool, measure its length. Whenever possible, select a tool with a handle length
54
longer than your palm size, as a handle that's too short “may cut into the base of your hand and cause discomfort and possible injury.” When considering grip size, you want the tool to match or be as close to your own grip size as possible. If that doesn't work, you can modify the tool's grip: If it's too small, add a sleeve or cushion made out of duct tape to make the handle bigger. If it's too big, try sanding the handle to a smaller diameter. Keeping the tool's weight in mind, as “choosing the lightest-weight version of a tool may reduce the amount of effort and force needed to perform a task and reduce hand and wrist fatigue.”

Ready, Set, Go: Evacuation safety If local officials suddenly issued an evacuation order for your area, would you be ready? Preparedness is important. "Evacuations are more common than many people realize," the City of Evanston (IL) says. "Fires and floods cause evacuations most frequently across the U.S., and almost every year, people residents are forced to evacuate because of emergencies. In addition, hundreds of times a year, transportation and industrial accidents release harmful substances, forcing many people to leave their homes.” Ready.gov lists the steps to follow before, during and after an evacuation.
Before: • Identify several places you could go in an emergency, such as a friend's home in another town. Pick destinations in different directions so you have options. • Familiarize yourself with alternate routes out of your area.
58 58
• Create a family/household plan to stay in touch in case you become separated. Choose a meeting place and update it depending on the circumstance. Include your pet in your plan. • Prepare an emergency supply kit. Learn more at ready.gov/kit.
During: • Secure your home by closing and locking doors and windows. • Unplug electrical equipment such as radios, TVs and small appliances. Leave freezers and refrigerators plugged in unless flooding is a risk. • If instructed to do so, shut off water, gas and electricity before leaving. • Follow recommended evacuation routes.
After: • Check with local officials before returning. • Once home, if the power is out, only use a portable generator outside and away from your home.

Cloud-Based Lone-Worker Monitoring Are monitoring devices cloud connected? In other words, are they sending data in realtime on the location, state and wellness of employees?
system. If an organization required a call every two hours and something happened shortly after, that lone worker could need help for up to two hours before a response was initiated. Now, this dated check-in system can be replaced with new cloud-connected technology. Devices can now provide increased safety tracking without interrupting productivity. If an alert is triggered, a fast, accurate response is crucial for your team's safety. If an organization doesn't have a supervisor available or an around-the-clock safety control room, outsourcing 24/7 monitoring services is an option to ensure worker safety. When choosing monitoring services, select one with professionally trained agents who address an alert from the moment it comes in until the situation is completely resolved.
When investing in your safety program, look for a vendor who will provide:
When an organization decides to invest in a lone worker safety monitoring system, lives are on the line. It's important to consider safety features and technological advances-not all devices are created equal. Cloud connectivity is key when moving your organization's safety program to the next level. Cloud hosting makes it easier for employers to focus on creating high-quality applications instead of worrying about managing on-premises servers or how services are distributed through networks to users. For cloud users, software is typically delivered through a browser or app, making it easy to access its functionality. When safety monitoring software is delivered through an online interface, employers benefit in numerous ways. Having no software to install, update and manage is critical and means that support isn't required from busy information technology professionals. Look for software that's deployed to wearable devices automatically when connected. Data should be securely stored and available whenever you need access, including alert records, gas exposures, health events and more. Traditionally, lone worker safety monitoring included employees periodically disrupting their work to check in and confirm their well-being. This could mean calling a co-worker, supervisor, call center or automated call-in 60

Climbing New Heights in Material Innovation for Safety Footwear crucially provides a useful rebound boost of around 55% of the energy back to the wearer with each step taken, helping reduce fatigue. Wearers are thereby empowered to work safely, comfortably and agilely on their feet throughout the day, without getting footsore or backaches.
Workers' safety shoes have come a long way since the days wooden clogs were used. For workers across numerous industries-be it automotive, logistics, manufacturing, food, health care and so on - safety toe shoes have transitioned from heavy natural materials to more lightweight, yet robust, synthetics. They've also gone from clunky utilitarian to a more sports-casual look-enabling workers to wear the same pair of shoes comfortably (and potentially stylishly) in and outside of the workplace, a timesaving convenience.
E-TPU is highly robust and retains its performance qualities even in extreme heat or cold. It stays elastic down to minus 4° F. This allows the safety footwear to last for years, remaining comfortable and protective (including against joint stress and fatigue) even throughout constant use in cold rooms and across the widest range of environments. Originally used to revolutionize running shoes This material technology was in fact originally used in running shoes to enhance athletes' performance and safety - it's even said to have revolutionized the running experience.
This trend to incorporate style and ergonomic comfort without compromising on safety and functionality has been made possible through the innovative use of new high-performance synthetic materials that have come on the market successively over the years.
Empowering Users to Make Sustainable Choices Importantly, Infinergy has been formulated to have the lowest possible environmental impact. The material is bisphenol A-free (thus, nontoxic), can be created using bio-based raw materials and can be molded using lowtemperature (and thereby low-energy and low-emission) processes.
More significantly, continuing advancements in materials technology means footwear designers now have the means to create shoes that don't just provide workplace safety, but also reduce fatigue and repetitive strain or joint stress injuries. These developments can help improve the quality of work life and save on lost downtime.
Because the material is so durable-able to retain its integrity and performance for years-products such as your favourite sports shoes, safety work boots or dress shoes made with Infinergy can continue to give you comfortable service without further expense for a long time.
An instance of an advanced technology material that lends itself to these improvements is Expanded Thermoplastic Polyurethane (E-TPU). This comprises small, lightweight beads of synthetic material blown up, like popcorn, and molded together. The advanced material, which is commercially known as Infinergy, uniquely combines several properties that are rarely found together: It's both super soft like a foam, yet ultraspringy (like rubber, but significantly more bouncy and lighter in weight). The compression technology characteristic of E-TPU provides unparalleled and durable shock absorption. Incorporated in safety shoe design, the material with these qualities provides not only optimal and constant cushioning underfoot, protecting against spinal and joint stress, it also January 2022 - www.safesecuremagazine.com
Moreover, at the end of its use, Infinergy E-TPU can be fully recycled and regenerated to its original highperformance qualities-enabling it to contribute to a circular economy geared to reducing, reusing and recycling. The Future of Safety Footwear We may well see more safety shoes incorporating sustainable high-performance technology in future. The more that advanced materials can add value to safety shoes-such as fatigue reduction and other worker-performance and quality-of-life enhancing aspects, moreover in a sustainable way the more likely there will be a demand for it and, indeed, an expectation of it. 61

Today, in all the major cities of Maharashtra, the number of high-rise buildings, commercial buildings, shopping malls, multiplexes, factories, hospital buildings, high school buildings, star hotel buildings, underground railways, metros, markets, etc. are increasing rapidly. While providing good facilities in all these buildings, one needs to address the increasing risk of fire due to the various flammable materials used in them and the large number of occupants in the building. The conclave featured Moderator Shri. Chintu Asher, keynote speakers from the fire industry like Mr. Kapse & Mr. Muthukrishnan guiding topics ranging from sprinkler system design to model checklists and the benefits of digitization for the fire industry. "We have decided to set up a special cell soon to take up the issue of the fire licensing agencies directly with the authorities and undertake training for them," Mr. Suresh Menon, National President, FSAI said. NEW DAT E JUN E 20 22
Hannover, Germany. The dates for INTERSCHUTZ have been changed, with the event now taking place from 20th to 25th June 2022. The decision to reschedule the world's leading trade fair fire, rescue, civil protection and safety/security was taken by Deutsche Messe after a process of thorough deliberation and intensive discussion with key market players. In a context that has affected numerous other trade fairs and events, the move was driven by the latest developments in the global status of the COVID 19 pandemic. “Flagship trade fairs like INTERSCHUTZ have a long-range planning horizon and require a lead time of several months. In addition, the industries that participate at INTERSCHUTZ, either as exhibitors or visitors, are among the people most heavily involved in dealing with the current pandemic across the globe,” comments Dr. Andreas Gruchow, Member of the Deutsche Messe Managing Board. “INTERSCHUTZ takes place every five years. The community of people involved in fire and rescue services as well as civil protection has been eagerly awaiting the next edition of the event. Against this background, the decision to reschedule was a difficult one. But a series of intensive discussions with our partners and exhibitors as well as representatives of key visitor target groups made clear to us that this move was unavoidable. A staging of the event in the summer of 2022 has been welcomed by all stakeholders. This is the only way we can offer everyone the necessary planning security for their trade fair appearance. A flagship fair like this one thrives on a large number of international visitors and, in particular, face-to-face encounters. Based on the current international travel restrictions, our clients would not be able to adequately prepare for such a major, globally significant trade fair,” Gruchow concludes.
New Date for INTERSCHUTZ: June 2022 For us, INTERSCHUTZ is the most important international trade fair for the industry. And our expectation is that it will seamlessly follow on from the great success of 2015. We are certain that the conditions will be in place in 2022. Our highly innovative industry will have numerous exciting new products in its program by then. And the German and international visitors will make INTERSCHUTZ 2022 the big live event of the year as we know it,” said Dr. Bernd Scherer, Executive management member of the German Mechanical Engineering Industry Association (VDMA) and Managing Director VDMA Fire Fighting Equipment, commenting on the new date of INTERSCHUTZ in June 2022. Dirk Aschenbrenner, President of the German Fire Protection Association (vfdb), also welcomes the decision to postpone INTERSCHUTZ until 2022: “Our emergency services are and will continue to be extremely busy in the coming months. As we know, INTERSCHUTZ is always a welcome opportunity for thousands of them to obtain information, exchange experiences and network. None of this would be possible at present in this tense situation. However, without the many visitors, including those from the non-material world, INTERSCHUTZ would not be what it has always been. Exhibitors also appreciate the direct contact with those who ultimately use their products and services. The industry needs this exchange between suppliers and users.” Dieter Siegel, CEO of Rosenbauer International AG, welcomes the new date for INTERSCHUTZ in the summer of 2022: “Unfortunately, the COVID-19 crisis still has a firm grip on all of us and does not yet allow us to hold trade fairs and major events safely at the present time. However, the safety and health of people is of course our top priority as a system provider in firefighting and disaster protection. We are therefore in favor of postponing INTERSCHUTZ until 2022, because we all want nothing more than an INTERSCHUTZ as we know it: an unforgettable trade show experience and a meeting place for fire departments from all over the world, without compromising on the safety of our customers, visitors and guests.”
“The auspices for INTERSCHUTZ have been excellent for a long time,” adds Martin Folkerts, Global Director of INTERSCHUTZ at Deutsche Messe, continuing: “We had already signed up a record number of exhibitors for the originally planned edition of the event in June 2020. We are confident our exhibitors will now join us in organizing INTERSCHUTZ 2022, which will be staged for the first time as a hybrid event. The pandemic has made us all aware of the importance of the fire department, rescue services and civil protection. In addition, we expect significant increases in investment in these sectors all over the world, which will present the ideal conditions for our marketplace. More than any other event, INTERSCHUTZ thrives on personal contact and direct networking. It is THE platform for the worldwide community.”
The next INTERSCHUTZ will take place from 20 th to 25th June 2022 at the Hannover Exhibition Grounds.
“The manufacturers of fire fighting technology within the VDMA expressly welcome the postponement of INTERSCHUTZ to 2022.
