The year 2021 has been quite a difficult one for most of us, the pandemic did not only wreck our health and sanity, but also left quite a lasting impact on most of our lives. One that will continue to affect our lives even when this whole nightmare is over. Yet, humanity is not be taken lightly either. We will continue to hold on to hope and persevere for a brighter and better tomorrow. The upcoming year has a lot of people's hope riding on it, and the start of a new year has never seemed more promising. Finally, this rollercoaster of a year is coming to an end and the anticipation for better times is contagious. People all over the world are already establishing their New Year resolutions and plans. This upcoming year will give us the opportunity to start a fresh and work towards rebuilding the world after the pandemic and even bettering ourselves in order to avoid such global suffering again. On a lighter note, the New Year celebration is a time for joy, great pomp and show across the world. Even though this New Year's Eve will be a quiet affair, with people celebration from the comforts of their own home and all the while following all safety protocols that are in affect due to the new strain of the coronavirus. Now that we are entering 2022, its best to let 2021 become a distant memory and celebrate the upcoming year with a lot of joy and happiness. Ready to Wear: Wearable Technology Could Boost Workplace Safety, but Concerns Remain

 'A Big Benefit’ One use for wearables is taking a device that's already in use, such as a personal gas monitor, and giving it the ability to send data to another interested party. They've always had the workers wearing them for personal safety but now that they can be associated with a wearable, or networked, or with the internet of things, a guy in an office can look at his desk and see what the monitor is measuring. Another potential use is proximity detection inside mines or at construction sites. A technology-focused defense, security and infrastructure firm, began using radiofrequency identification, or RFID, at some of its jobsites to study interactions between workers and machines.

 Other Measurements Lee has participated in a number of studies on wearable technology. One of his latest used electroencephalogram devices to monitor workers' stress levels at construction sites. When data was fed through two deep learning neural networks (a set of algorithms designed to mimic human thought), the researchers could discern which workers were stressed with an 86.6 percent accuracy, or "at least 6 percent" better than other stress recognition methods. In another study it found that using wristband-type biosensors to measure stress, physical demands and risk perception among construction workers was feasible.

 Change is Coming Cost and Concerns about privacy are among the reasons some safety professionals are at least somewhat hesitant about using wearable technology.

Wearable Technology entails attaching mobile electronics to the body for a broad spectrum of purposes. It covers all types of devices, from the small fitness device on your wrist to a full-body exoskeleton. In the safety world, "wearables" can include "smart" personal protective equipment, glasses with heads-up displays and hard hats with sensors. What most of these devices have in common is they give safety professionals and other employees a set of watchful eyes to help ensure the health and well-being of the workforce, particularly lone workers. "The greatest benefit of this technology is that, as a worker, you're not alone in terms of your safety," To some workers, however, these watchful eyes may be perceived as prying eyes. That's why experts say it's important to lay down the groundwork and gain the trust of employees before turning to these new wave devices. 14

However, more than half of the respondents (509 of 952) said they're in favor of using wearables to "track relevant metrics for several common OSH risk factors." Another 27.3 percent (260 of 952) said they have at least some interest. That acceptance likely will grow as "people eventually get used to it and it's just part of their normal day." According to a survey half of manufacturers plan to adopt wearable technology by 2022, and 55 percent of current users say they will expand their use. The overall wearable technology market, both at and away from work, is expected to reach $60 billion by that same year. The benefits are workers are more aware of their environment and the environment is more responsive to the worker. "Some of these biometric things where the workers are just healthier, better rested, not fatigued, not overheated and things like that, I think, again, it's productive. It's healthy to the worker. Electrical Hazards and Footwear What should I know about purchasing safety boots that can stand up to electrical hazards? Laying a foundation for worker safety truly starts from the ground up. Footwear Safety is paramount for skilled craft trades across the board. One small misstep or incident can result in varying levels of injury, causing lost time and compromised well-being. Finding protective footwear that is not only comfortable for workers, but also protective, is key to starting the workday out on the right foot. Craftsmen know they need the right tool for the right job. That same theory applies for footwear. When looking at a specific trade - in this case, working with and around electricity - special attention must be paid to footwear to reduce the possibility of electrocution or other electricity-related incidents on the jobsite.

Some simple tips to remember when shopping for your next pair of work boots:

There are three general classifications for safety footwear from an electrical standpoint, and all three have very distinct purposes. Non-Conductive Footwear. Non-conductive footwear often is classified with an "EH" rating. This safety standard is designed to provide a secondary source of protection when accidentally coming in contact with live electrical circuits to reduce the potential of electric shock. When it comes to safety toes, EH-rated boots can have steel or composite toes. A common misconception is that metal in a boot is bad when working around electricity. The reality is, metal is conductive when it is in contact with other metal. Metal safety-toe caps, steel shanks, etc., are enclosed by non-conductive materials (often leather, rubber, insulation, etc.) and are therefore safe to wear in environments where live circuits are present. It also is important to select a boot with a rubber outsole that will help to ground any charges during an incident. Rubber outsoles also are long-wearing and slip-water-and abrasion-resistant and will help to protect the wearer from slips or falls on the jobsite. Anti-Static Footwear. Boots with this classification are designed for workers operating in environments sensitive to static electricity. Anti-static footwear helps to dissipate the accumulation of static electricity from the body while still providing a reasonable level of resistance to electrical hazards from live circuits. These boots are typically marked with ESD or SD tags. Conductive Footwear. Conductive footwear helps to protect the wearer in an environment where the accumulation of static electricity on the body can be a hazard. These workers often handle explosive or volatile materials. Conductive safety footwear is made with materials and cements that offer no electrical resistance. When shopping for boots, one might come across the term "static-dissipating." Static-dissipating does just that-it reduces the amount of static electricity accumulated from walking, movement, etc. The boots dissipate static electricity from the body to the ground to reduce the chance of ignition from a static electric spark. It is important to remember that these boots offer no protection from live charges or electrical equipment. As you can see, the first step to protecting yourself in electric or volatile environments starts with knowing what you need to be protected from. From there, it will be the performance and comfort features integrated into the boot that will set it apart from the rest. 16

Do your Research First. Find out what requirements you might have in your work environment and what personal needs you may have. Shop for Boots in the Afternoon or Early Evening. Feet tend to swell throughout the day, especially for those who work while standing. By trying on footwear when your feet are at their largest, your work boots will feel comfortable, even on the longest days. Come Prepared. Bring a typical pair of well-padded socks that you might wear to better understand how your boots might fit. Don't Forget about Comfort. Brands today incorporate many comfort features to partner with their performance and protection enhancements. Emergency Exit Routes

How would you escape from your workplace in an emergency? Do you know where all the exits are in case your first choice is too crowded? Are you sure the doors will be unlocked and that the exit access, such as a hallway, will not be blocked during a fire, explosion, or other crisis? Knowing the answers to these questions could keep you safe during an emergency. employees to evacuate safely. Exit routes must be located as far away as practical from each other in case one is blocked by fire or smoke. Exception: If the number of employees, the size of the building, its occupancy, or the arrangement of the workplace allows all employees to evacuate safely during an emergency, one exit route is permitted.

Q. What are some other design and construction requirements for exit routes?

Q. What is an exit route? An exit route is a continuous and unobstructed path of exit travel from any point within a workplace to a place of safety. An exit route consists of three parts:  Exit access - portion of an exit route that leads to an exit.  Exit - portion of an exit route that is generally separated from other areas to provide a protected way of travel to the exit discharge.  Exit discharge - part of the exit route that leads directly outside or to a street, walkway, refuge area, public way, or open space with access to the outside.

Q. How many exit routes must a workplace have? Normally, a workplace must have at least two exit routes to permit prompt evacuation of employees and other building occupants during an emergency. More than two exits are required, however, if the number of employees, size of the building, or arrangement of the workplace will not allow 26

 Exit routes must be permanent parts of the workplace.  Exit discharges must lead directly outside or to a street, walkway, refuge area, public way, or open space with access to the outside. These exit discharge areas must be large enough to accommodate the building occupants likely to use the exit route.  Exit stairs that continue beyond the level on which the exit discharge is located must be interrupted at that level by doors, partitions, or other effective means that clearly indicate the direction of travel leading to the exit discharge.  Exit route doors must be unlocked from the inside. They must be free of devices or alarms that could restrict use of the exit route if the device or alarm fails.  Side-hinged exit doors must be used to connect rooms to exit routes. These doors must swing out in the direction of exit travel if the room is to be occupied by more than 50 people or if the room is a high-hazard area.  Exit routes must support the maximum permitted occupant load for each floor served, and the capacity of an exit route may not decrease in the direction of exit route travel to the exit discharge.  Ceilings of exit routes must be at least 7 feet, 6 inches high.  An exit access must be at least 28 inches wide at all points. Where there is only one exit access leading to an exit or exit discharge, the width of the exit and exit discharge must be at least equal to the width of the exit access. Objects that project into the exit must not reduce its width.  Outdoor exit routes are permitted but must meet the minimum height and width requirement for indoor exit routes and must - have guardrails to protect unenclosed sides if a fall hazard exists; - be covered if snow or ice is likely to accumulate, unless the employer can demonstrate accumulations will be removed before a slipping hazard exists; - be reasonably straight and have smooth, solid, substantially level walkways; and - not have a dead-end longer than 20 feet.

Q. What are the requirements for exits?  Exits must be separated by fire resistant materials-that is, one-hour fire-resistance rating if the exit connects three or fewer stories and two-hour fire-resistance rating if the exit connects more than three floors.  Exits are permitted to have only those openings necessary to allow access to the exit from occupied areas of the workplace or to the exit discharge. Openings must be protected by a selfclosing, approved fire door that remains closed or automatically closes in an emergency.

Q. What are the maintenance, safeguarding, and operational features for exit routes? OSHA standards require employers to do the following:  Keep exit routes free of explosive or highly flammable furnishings and other decorations.  Arrange exit routes so employees will not have to travel toward a high-hazard area unless the path of travel is effectively shielded from the highhazard area.  Ensure that exit routes are unobstructed such as by materials, equipment, locked doors, or deadend corridors.  Ensure that safeguards designed to protect employees during an emergency remain in good working order.  Provide lighting for exit routes adequate for employees with normal vision.  Keep exit route doors free of decorations or signs that obscure the visibility of exit route doors.  Post signs along the exit access indicating the direction of travel to the nearest exit and exit discharge if that direction is not immediately apparent. Also, the line-of-sight to an exit sign must be clearly visible at all times.  Mark doors or passages along an exit access that could be mistaken for an exit "Not an Exit" or with a sign identifying its use (such as "Closet").  Install "EXIT" signs in plainly legible letters.  Renew fire-retardant paints or solutions often enough to maintain their fire-retardant properties.  Maintain exit routes during construction, repairs, or alterations.  Provide an emergency alarm system to alert employees, unless employees can promptly see or smell a fire or other hazard in time to provide adequate warning to them.

Q. What are the minimum elements of an Emergency Action Plan?  Procedures for reporting fires and other emergencies.  Procedures for emergency evacuation, including the type of evacuation and exit route assignments. 27

 Procedures for employees who stay behind to continue critical plant operations.  Procedures to account for all employees after evacuation.  Procedures for employees performing rescue or medical duties.  Name or job title of employees to contact for detailed plan information.  Alarm system to alert workers.

 Procedures for regular maintenance of safeguards installed on heat-producing equipment to prevent the accidental ignition of combustible materials.  Name or job title of employees responsible for maintaining equipment to prevent or control sources of ignition or fires.  Name or job title of employees responsible for the control of fuel source hazards.

In addition, you must designate and train employees to assist in a safe and orderly evacuation of other employees. You must also review the emergency action plan with each employee covered when the following occur:

 You Will Smell the Smoke Some people do not think to check their smoke alarms on a regular basis. Their belief is that the smoke will alert them to a fire in the building. That is not the case. Unfortunately, most fires happen at nighttime when everyone is sound asleep. By the time you do smell the smoke, it could be too late to get out as the fire has traveled closer to your room. Always keep your smoke detectors in good working order and check them regularly throughout the year as part of your fire safety plan.

 Residential Fires Have Fewer People Who Perish than Business Fires Sadly, most deaths in fires come from those who are at home. Make sure you have a fire safety plan in place and that your family is aware of what to do should an alarm sound. You want to practice getting out of the building safely and ensuring everyone understands 32

where to go when they are outside. Have a designated spot and be sure to run through a fire drill at home, just like your children do at schools.

 Go Back Inside to Get Someone if Help Hasn't Arrived Never do that! It can feel like an eternity while you're waiting for help to arrive. However, if you go back in you have now put two people in danger for when the firefighters do arrive on the scene. Many times, when people go back in they do not come back out. Even if you are armed with a portable fire extinguisher, don't risk it. If you're outside, then stay outside until help arrives and the fire is under control.

 Flames Cause the Most Problem and Injuries One common myth about fires is that the actual flames are what is causing the injuries or deaths. That is not true. Most injuries and fatalities from a fire are caused by the smoke, not the flames. Your apartment building can fill up with smoke and be as dark as night, even during the day. Making sure that you have a fire safety plan in place and your family is aware of it is key to avoiding a tragic ending to a possible fire in your home. In Mumbai, any building taller than 32 meters (approximately 10 floors without a podium) is a considered a high-rise, according to BMC’s Development Control and Promotion Regulations (DCPR) 2034, and any building taller than 120 metres (approximately 40 floors without a podium) requires an approval by a special stateappointed committee comprising a structural engineer, a geotechnical consultant and the city’s chief fire officer. “International studies show it takes about 7.5 minutes for a fire to become a full blown major fire,” a senior fire officer said. “The Mumbai fire brigade’s response time after we receive a fire call is about 15 minutes. A building’s firefighting system can respond right away, within the first 7.5 minutes. In cases where this is not operational, the fire would have already intensified by the time our firefighting system starts.” The officer added, “During this time, the smoke generated due to building furniture, beds, curtains, etc, will hamper visibility of any trapped residents, and of firemen, and increase the time taken to access the spot of the fire once we are inside the building. Every minute counts.” At present, Mumbai fire brigade’s tallest ladder is of 90 meters. This can access a fire up to a maximum of 30 floors from outside the building. If there is a fire on higher floors in a building where the firefighting system is not operational, the fire brigade has to set up a ‘series pumping network’ using its own apparatus, which is carried to the floor either using a fire lift or the staircase of the building. “This can take up to one hour. Called Form B, all buildings in the city need to submit this to the fire brigade after getting their premises inspected by licensed agencies, the official said. “This is different from the original NOC a building is given soon after construction.” After the fire at Kamala Mills Compound in Lower Parel in December 2017, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) set up fire compliance cells to inspect if buildings have submitted their fire safety audits. The parameters that decide if a building is not following fire safety rules include a nonfunctional internal fire-fighting system - fire alarms, sprinklers, hose pipes and riser systems - blocked fire exits, and non-functional fire lifts. Mumbai’s chief fire officer Hemant Parab said, “This is now routine procedure. Apart from these inspections, the Fire Brigade has been conducting awareness camps for residents, elected representatives, security firms, students and volunteers. Disaster Response training workshops are conducted in the Disaster Management Training Institute in Parel.” Vilas Nagalkar, senior architect said, “Fire safety in high-rise buildings includes not just riser systems, but also a fire lift, sprinklers, and smoke detectors. A large number of casualties in fires happen due to inhalation of smoke, so air vents are a must on every floor. It is also pertinent that an operational riser system has high water pressure, as we saw in case of the fire at One Avighna Park, where the water pressure in the firefighting system was weak. Occupants must ensure refuge areas are kept free of encroachment. In many cases, we have seen the building managements lock up refuge areas so that they are not used as store rooms, or the corridors are occupied hampering movement in case of a fire.” 49

 Idea for Implication (Use Case) One example of IoT for disaster management systems is a fire incident monitoring system. This system consists of a network of internet connected devices right from alarm systems in buildings, to remote monitoring and communication modules in vehicles of first responders like fire fighters, paramedics, police, disaster response forces, etc. and real time tracking of events on the ground by authorities in control rooms. We implemented a prototype of the above system that alerts first responders of the occurrence of a fire accident as well as sends real time data of the situation on the ground. Our system also allowed first responders to communicate with one another and the control room. The system is specific to fire incidents but can be easily modified to assist in any kind of calamity. The system provides real-time data of fire accidents and other such calamities to base stations and enables synchronisation between police, fire department, medical help, NDRF teams, etc. So that no component of the response-team is unaware of the situation and lacks support for the fight. This system contains a drone which can be used for monitoring from heights and get knowledge of people stuck inside the site of disaster. Drone is like an e-attendant for help. The system consist of three modules; 1) Module-A: Module inside building 2) Module-B: Module with fire vehicle 3) Module-C: Module mounted on Drone 53

1) Module-A: Module inside building: This module is basically a fire alarm system. It consists of a temperature sensor and smoke sensor/gas sensor. When the sensors cross the threshold value an alarm is raised and the fire department is intimated. Once the alarm is raised the module starts collecting the data from the sensors and sends it to the cloud. This module will also provide the location through GPS. This data is accessed by the team handling the second module. 2) Module-B: Module with fire vehicle: The second module will be present on the fire truck. This module will access the data from the building via the cloud. All this data will be collected from the cloud by FPGA. This module will perform processing of data and segregate data so that each first responder team will get access to only required data; for example a) traffic police will get information about only the location so they can manage traffic in that area. b) Medical helpers will be provided data for casualties to take care of their procedures. More importantly this module will be in complete touch with the base station appointed to control the crisis. This module will also acquire data from a drone and have control over it. All communication will be enabled through Wi-Fi. 3) Module-C: Module mounted on Drone: Third module consists of a camera mounted on a drone. This camera can be used for monitoring from heights and getting knowledge of people stuck inside the site of disaster. Traditional IoT systems use embedded devices like microcontrollers but in this system we have used an FPGA. It can greatly surpass the capabilities of microcontrollers due to their parallel architecture and concurring processing. This can significantly reduce the processing latency and increase processing power. A Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) is a semiconductor device that consists of an array of configurable logic blocks. They are potentially a great option for IoT based systems because of their reconfigurability and faster processing. Nowadays, many FPGA manufacturing companies are creating devices that are specifically tailored for IoT applications 54

It is believed that drivers searching for a parking are estimated to be responsible for around 20 percent traffic congestion in major cities. In light of the current situation, respective municipal corporations have started taking actions by catering various solutions to these problems. To speak of parking problems, municipal corporations have/is creating many parking spaces. But eventually, most of them go empty all around because of lack of awareness and negligence. This problem is not only a worry for the Government, even large institutions, malls, private parking providers have a difficulty in managing parking spaces. So, to solve this problem, we came up with an idea of 'Smart Parking Solution'. Smart parking can be defined as the use of advanced technologies for the efficient operation, monitoring, and management of parking within an area. It aims to provide a more balanced view by managing proper demand and supply of a parking slot(s). It has been adopted by many countries (especially European countries). But due to its complexity, it has not been accepted widely on a larger scale. This article aims to build a fully automated system which helps users find the number of free or empty parking slots in real-time. Here, an idea has been proposed wherein a camera module is attached to a raspberry pi board which continuously takes live feed of the designated parking slots. The raspberry pi board has been fused with deep learning algorithms which process the feed and give a live update on the number of empty parking slots available. This availability is replicated on an android application which has to be installed in the user's mobile phone. 74

 How this idea protects the security of the user having a major parking concern? The camera not only can be used for parking purposes but also a whole lot of other things related to security. It will give us a constant recording of 24 - hours feed of the parking spot and with feeds from multiple cameras the security of the entire parking lot is taken care of where the cameras would work as CCTV cameras. Even though more people can now buy a car, there are still people who cannot afford one, but everyone today needs a car for their work and if they cannot afford one, they steal. In such a case if the deep learning model is trained with images of car robbery, so when the robbery takes place, the app notifies the user. These days it is very difficult to find a parking space so many times it is observed that people park their vehicle in other's slot. Using this idea, we can avoid this parking. The user of the app can be notified if someone is parking in their slot thus avoiding wrong parking.  How this idea will benefit its end users? The idea in the article is a good product for the government as well as for private organizations who can use it to solve the parking issue that they have been currently facing. This can help the people in a way where they can have so many benefits. Beginning with the time they save where they initially used to spend so much time looking for a place to park, now they can just find the right place from the app and go there directly. Secondly, they can save on fuel as earlier one has to drive to and from around the place for finding a place that is suitable for parking but now, they can directly drive to the place where they need to. Thirdly, people will know exactly where to park thus driving the people to parking zones directly and hence reducing the risk of eliminating heavy fines incurred due to parking in the "NO PARKING" zones. These are just a small part of the few benefits of having a smart parking system. The actual list of this can be huge and once the advantages are realized the actual need for a smart parking system will be understood.  What are the different types of Smart Parking Systems available? and has been practiced since a greater period of time. When the term Smart Parking was introduced, Artificial Intelligence and Machine learning algorithms were not that developed or in use. So, pertaining to that situation a smart parking system 1.0 was developed using various different technologies like radio frequency identification (RFID), Wireless Sensor Network (WSN), Bluetooth, Wi-Fi etc. Smart Parking 1.0 A smart parking system 1.0 was developed using sensors. The sensors played a major role in the system by detecting the presence of a car in a parking space. Here, sensors need to fitted/placed either on the ground or at a height in order to detect a car's presence. This leads the authorities to shell out or dedicate a huge of amount of money for the installation and maintenance of the system. Under Smart Parking System 1.0, an RFID based smart parking application was also developed which implements an automated check in and check out of the car by scanning the RFIDs on the cars.

After studying about these developments, we came up with Smart Parking 3.0 which automates the system by using IOT and machine learning algorithms. Smart Parking 3.0 To start with the hardware part, it includes a camera module which is interfaced and powered by a raspberry pi board. The camera module must be placed at a decent height so as to capture a proper frame of parking slots. The camera module when powered on starts taking live feed of the slots, which is fetched by the processor embedded on the raspberry pi board. The processor has been fused and trained by very long, efficient and complex deep learning algorithms which would play a major role in our idea. The model is trained with thousands of car images along with its different parking positions. The number of training images are very high so as to include each and every possible scenario and achieve a greater efficiency. This also makes it more complex, which may lead to speed latency. This latency problems can be solved by shifting to hardware with better specifications. A live feed is taken from the camera and is broken down into frames. The algorithm then checks the frames and determines whether a space is empty or not. An appropriate status is stored in the database which gets updated regularly. Now, for the user to know the status, an android application has been created. The user will have an option to know the available status. On clicking, he/she would be able to see the real-time status. Now, coming on to the back-end part, the app is integrated by a database which is responsible for storing user's data and displaying the real time status of the parking slots. So, to display the parking status, we query the database to fetch live parking status and display it on the screen of the end user (updated regularly).

Smart Parking 2.0 Smart parking 1.0 was further improved and various new models and modifications came up like, an intelligent parking guidance and information system that uses webcam to detect free parking slots and provides SMS based reservation service to the driver. The Smart Parking 1.0 which is currently present in the market uses different types of sensors that are integrated with some hardware and are placed at each and every parking slot. This makes the system hardware dependent, increasing the cost and maintenance. Whenever there is some issue where the sensor stops detecting, it is very difficult to find the problem due to hardware dependency and long interconnections which reduces the growth of this system. The Smart Parking Solution (SPS) 2.0 uses GPS based techniques, where they detect free parking locations based on the number of users present in a particular area. The flaws in the technique makes it inaccurate as there are no actual coordinates available of the free parking, especially in an underground parking where GPS tracking becomes an issue because of network problems. camera used would decide the distance from which the system should be placed, a less megapixel camera would have to be placed closer to the parking slots then a camera with high megapixel. Thus, based on the distance at which the camera is placed, the coverage area would be decided. Also, it is difficult to sense the availability of the parking if the car is wrongly parked. Another constraint is of the deep learning model which is used to detect different types of cars. The process of training the model is time consuming and the resources required are rare to find. Since, new cars are being introduced in the market at a fast face thus to train the model each and every time will make the system difficult to update as well as adapt the situation.  Future Aspects

Source: Vedcyeplta.Top The future aspect of this idea is that the accuracy of the model can be further increased by training it with more images and varying parameters of the model, interface of the android application can be modified and google maps can be integrated to help the user with directions of the available parking space. Hardware compatibility can be eradicated by using CCTV cameras and a server computer. This system can be integrated with various independent organizations like commercial complexes, hotels, malls, etc.  Conclusion We at S.P.I.T wish to undertake some sincere effort to develop appropriate automated systems. In this context we also love to dwell upon those areas where innovations related to IOT fields are considered. Thus, a camera based Smart Parking System which provides a novel parking management solution for both on-street and offstreet. They must also be such that anyone could be able to understand them and be tempted to apply considering their simplicity and ease of practice. While doing so the main purpose for which they are created is duly achieved - Ease in finding parking spaces. Also, we plan to expand the scope of research work on better design and development of technologies. Like the Yolo deep learning model in the article. In sequel, this would not only help provide an effective solution to a real - life problem but also support the MAKE IN INDIA initiative that would boost our economy. 76

Electric Strike Installation Guide Follow this guide and you will install a strike correctly everytime. As we detail in this post, installing electric strikes successfully is mostly good preparation, but when done right provides years of trouble-free use. We use our test door to walk through the practical installation steps needed to get it right. Even if you never will install a strike in your life, do you know if your doors are right enough? In this note, we walk through the steps needed to get it right, everytime.

Factory Notched Frames: The scenario requiring the least amount of prep work is a door frame factory notched to work with a certain strike, as was the case with our door. However, even a factory notched requires filing down sharp edges and bending or adjusting mounting tabs so they do not interfere with the strike. In our door, the strike pocket was slightly undersized so we had to use a file to enlarge the opening. When performing this step, test fitting the strike to the frame is helpful, with attention paid to potential spots where the frame touches the strike. Any pressure or tight fit can warp the strike or cause it to bind, and the strike should fit easily into the pocket.

The Steps The process of installing strikes correctly is not complicated, but care should be taken to perform each step: • Door/Frame Alignment • Strike Box/Jamb Prep • Strike Prep • Power Connections • Final Checks If all the steps are followed, installing strikes can take minutes and involve minimal troubleshooting. We cover the steps in detail below:

Field Notched Frames: However, many frames are not factory built to work with strikes, and more drastic modifications are required. In many cases, the existing strike box (called a dust box) needs to be cut out to make room for the new strike. The strike's installation manual generally includes specific instructions to take when modifying the frame, and the needed cuts can be made with a high-speed rotary tool (like Dremel) for steel frames or with chisels for wood. Door/Frame Alignment Making sure the door and frame is aligned is a critical pre-requisite. Strike Box Preparation The next step is to cut the frame so the strike fits. Even 'zero cutting' surface mount strikes used with surface hardware may require frame modification, and it's a sure step when using mortise mount strikes. We break down these steps into two parts depending on the frame: • Factory Notched Frames • Field Notched Frames

A good instructional video on how to cut out a mortise strike into a wood frame can be found below: Strike Prep After the frame has been readied, fine tuning the strike for install is next. That process follows these points: • Fail Safe Configuration • Trim Plate Installation (optional) • Power Cabling We cover these steps in the video below: Fail Safe Adjustment: Many electric strikes are 'field adjustable' for either power failure condition. Changing from one state to the other usually entails changing position of springs, solenoids, or even small levers. In the case of our strike, you must change the position of two small screws hidden under a label:

Most strike installations will use a 'fail secure' position regardless of where they are installed, and this is the default condition most are shipped with. We confirmed our strike was configured correctly, and left it as shipped.

Final Installation At this point most of the work is complete and the payoff is close. There are just a few more check to make as the strike is finally installed into the frame: • Faceplate Selection • Power Connections • Installation/Shimming • Final Function Checks These final steps are covered in the video below: Faceplate Selection: Strikes generally ship with two or more faceplates, and selecting the correct one is critical during use. The 'keeper' area of the strike is bigger than the door lock's latches, and the faceplate narrows down the opening to match the specific type of door lock. This increases the 'tamper resistence' of the installation by eliminating potential gaps to insert prying tools behind the keeper. Other door lock features, like the deadlatch, need a positive surface to rest on when the door is closed, and the faceplate provides this surface. Our strike was furnished with two options, and because it will be installed with a mortise lockset, we will use the 'mortise faceplate':

'Trim Plate' Installation: For sloppy cutouts that may be unsightly or slightly oversized, most mortise strikes ship with an optional trim piece that hides the cutout. This trim, called an 'enhancer' or 'skirt' provides no security or operational benefit, just serves to cosmetically improve sloppy preparation work. Power Cabling: Many strikes ship as 'Dual Voltage' compatible, meaning they operate given either 12 VDC or 24 VDC supplies. Some models include a dual voltage transformer in the housing with a single pigtail, while others are sold with two different pigtails trailing from the case. After confirming which supply voltage is available, the strike can be configured for use, typically involving twisting or jumping certain wire pairs together. Mortise Cylindrical OR Faceplate Faceplate

Power Connections: Power cabling for strikes should be 'run-to' rather than 'run-from' the strike. This means that the power cablings are most easily routed from the source (typically a controller), through the frame, down into the strike box. Especially when mortar shields are prepped into the frame, the actual opening to run cable out of the box is likely difficult to find. When using a fishtape or glowrods, they can be driven up and out of the frame, taped to the end of the cables, and the power leads are drawn down into the strike area. 79

Once the leads are in the box, they can be connected to the strike's pigtails. The image below shows our strike, which included a factory snap-style connector for both ends of the power splice:

If the strike appears to be too far forward or too far back into the frame, or if it can be 'wiggled' in the enclosure, then shims should be installed to take up the slack. Most strikes include shims and designate their installation locations without causing interference to the strike's action. The aim of shimming the strike is to give it a solid mount with the frame, not compensate for alignment issues. If those conditions are noted, then we recommend checking the squareness of the frame and alignment of the door. Final Function Checks: At this point, the installer should check the strike's alignment with lock. Visually confirming the latches of the door lock are enclosed by the keeper is key. If the door latches do not physically make contact with any part of the strike when the door is shut, then the strike has been properly installed.

Making the Power Connections

Installation/Shimming: After power connections are made, the strike body should be inserted into the strike box, being careful not to pinch or crimp the cabling. If the prep beforehand has been done properly, this should be one of the easiest steps in the process:

The goal of the installation is a strike flush mounted to the frame with no backpressure on the door's latches. If these situations are noted, the should be corrected before calling the job finished.

Insert Strike into Frame

The strike itself is not ready for use without sandwiching the faceplate down on top of the strike. At this point, with the faceplate seated onto the strike, it should be secured into the frame with the included screws or bolts. The strike itself should be square in the pocket, with no parts of the frame touching the strike except for the mounting tabs.

Final Thoughts Most of strike installation is unglorious and even rough, but doing the basic prep work is necessary for trouble-free use. If the installer does a thorough job on the 98% preparation work, then actually installing the strike is an easy 2% effort.
