VdS and FM Global Intensify Cooperation The mutual technical exchange between VdS and FM Global in the field of Fire Prevention and Protection has already been taking place in joint working groups for several years. Now the collaboration has been extended to include the coordination of German versions of selected "Property Loss Prevention Data Sheets" from FM Global. The jointly prepared regulations define the requirements for the planning, installation and operation of sprinkler systems.

The implementation of a consistently high quality of fire prevention and protection testing requires exact and unambiguous terminology, which makes a standardised testing process possible in the first place. In the past, deviations could therefore occur in the interpretation of tests by VdS or FM Global, which could be a hindrance to the comparability of the test results in every detail. Against this background, FM Global has translated some data sheets into German and, together with VdS, adapted four central data sheets to the German "sprinkler wording". These data sheets describe the most important requirements for sprinkler systems, which make up a large part of the extinguishing systems used in industry today. In the current quarter the translations on www.fmglobaldatasheets.com will be updated to the latest version.

One example is the revised VdS CEA 4001, which is expected to appear in a reworked version in January 2021. FM Global representatives have also contributed their know-how in the field of flammable liquids to this guideline.

"With the word-precise coordination of testing standards for sprinkler systems, VdS and FM Global not only offer a significant plus in planning and process reliability for companies. The main benefit is that VdS inspectors can also inspect systems that have been built on the basis of the FM Global framework. Of course, the same also applies vice versa," explains Claas Baier, division manager of the Technical Inspection Centre at VdS. "In this way, considerable efficiency and cost advantages can be unlocked for our customers in a specific case," he adds.

 How DSPA works DSPA aerosol generators consist of a solid aerosol forming compound in a non-pressurized red canister which aerosolizes ﬁnely divided solid par cles: the aerosol ﬁre ex nguishing agent. The aerosol is self-generated by a combus on process of the solid aerosol-forming compound, ac vated by an ac va on device, also known as the starter. 26

Extinguishing Mechanism Unlike many other ex nguishing agents, DSPA Aerosol interferes with the chain reac on in the fire, leaving oxygen levels intact. "Fire propaga on" radicals (OH, H, and O) are essen al elements to the chain reac on of the fire. DSPA Aerosol suppresses the fire (primarily) by chemical interference with these free radicals within the fire zone, thus interrup ng the on-going chain reac on of the fire. DSPA Aerosol is an ex nguishing medium of finely divided solid par cles, mainly potassium par cles, with a typically diameter of approx. 2 microns. When introduced into the flaming region of a fire, the aerosol reacts with the fire radicals produced during combus on (hydrogen, oxygen, and hydroxyls) resul ng in ex nguishment of the fire. It is argued that ex nguishing with aerosol will leave a small residue a er ex nguishing, and could be necessary to be cleaned. What about the standard cleaning procedures a er a fire has occurred?  Why is it Preferred Above Gas-Extinguishing Systems? D S PA a e r o s o l g e n e r a t o r s a r e unpressurized, nor do they increase pressure inside the room or object during discharge, making transport, installa on and use easy and safe. There is no need for expensive pipe work, and require far less maintenance compared to other conven onal systems. DSPA aerosol generators can be simply installed in the enclosure, elimina ng the need for safe cylinder storage. Gujarat Gets Fire Safety Policy

A er a string of gruesome fire tragedies and the Gujarat high court pulling up the state government and its agencies over fire safety preparedness, the Gujarat government announced that it has finalized and prepared a new fire safety policy.

The Policy will Come into Force th from January 26 , 2021. The highlight of the new policy will be that private en es and engineers will be allowed to inspect and cer fy buildings for their fire safety preparedness. The state government also announced se ng up of four new posts of ‘Director of Fire’ for four zones in the state. These officials will oversee the cer fica on of buildings for fire safety in their respec ve zones. An online portal is presently under development, which will be used for both empanelling fire safety officers who can cer fy buildings as well as making available all checklists required for fire safety clearances for different types of buildings.

The new policy is likely to propose penal ac on against agencies and individuals who cer fy buildings for fire safety, along with owners and office bearers of the building management in cases where lapses are found. “The new system for fire safety, which is being set up will be the first in the country in terms of transparency and efficiency. Private engineers will now be able to inspect and cer fy buildings for their preparedness against incidences of fires,” CM Vijay Rupani said in Gandhinagar. Since card issuance implies access rights, the recipient's iden fica on must be confirmed first before enabling the card and once the card has been issued, it cannot be retracted without another separate face-to-face interac on. In contrast, mobile access cards are designed to transfer authority safely to the user's smartphone based on TLS. In this way, creden als can be safely managed with authen cated users without face-to-face interac on. Mobile cards can be used not only at the sites with a large number of visitors or when managing access for an unspecified number of visitors, but also at the places like shared offices, kitchens and gyms, currently used as smart access control systems in shared economy markets. The market share of mobile access cards today is low even though the capability can offer real benefits to users and markets. For 13.56 MHz smart cards (which were designed to replace 125 kHz cards), it has taken 20 years since the standard was established but only about half of all 25 kHz cards have been replaced so far.
