History Meets the Future A Networked Solution from Bosch Ensures A High Standard of Security in Dresden's "Palace of Culture" The building experts from Bosch implemented a customized solu on for the Palace of Culture with a host of cleverly integrated components for fire protec on, evacua on, access control, video surveillance and building management. The result is a harmonious overall system that meets the en re range of security needs.

It took six years to remodel the interior of the “Palace of Culture”, a monument to socialism built in the 1960s under East German communist rule. Now Bosch is contribu ng intelligent solu ons to make sure that visitors feel safe there, without detrac ng from its historic charm. It takes the right se ng for culture to flourish. Various things are essen al: an ambiance in which visitors feel at ease, excellent acous cs, and flawless organiza on. Now that the Palace of Culture has been completely renovated to ensure all of this, the city of Dresden boasts a new, modern venue for promo ng the arts. A completely new, state-of-the-art auditorium is the heart of the building. It meets interna onal standards with its striking architecture and topnotch acous cs, providing ideal condi ons for the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra and all kinds of other musicians to give concerts. There is also a new municipal library branch, emphasizing the Palace of Culture’s new, open character. Spacious lobbies containing a restaurant and cket sales link all of the facili es and rooms with one another. “Bosch convinced us that they were right for the job” Many of the events held here in central Dresden are sold out. The main auditorium seats 1,700 people, and the building as a whole can accommodate up to 2,800. Crowds like these call for sophis cated security solu ons that can be smoothly integrated into the overall design. “We wanted a cost-effec ve overall solu on that would do jus ce to the Palace of Culture and its unique architecture,” says Steffen Meyer, the building’s manager. “We published an invita on to bid for the project and of all the applica ons we received, Bosch convinced us that they were right for the job.”

22

A Historic Landmark with Great Ambi ons “As a public facility where people gather, we have to comply with very strict fire protec on rules,” explains Meyer. “We also had to meet some special requirements.” Since the Palace of Culture has protected status as an historic landmark, the appearance of the walls, ceilings and floors may not be no ceably altered. Now virtually invisible smoke detectors preserve the ambiance of the concert hall. Special calcula ons were even carried out to avoid impairing its acous cs. Advanced video technology automa cally counts visitors to prevent the building’s capacity from being exceeded. Security staff can also tell whether anyone is s ll in the building, an important piece of informa on in case it is ever necessary to evacuate it. In cri cal situa ons, special speakers powerful enough to be heard over the orchestra or even a rock concert are lowered from the ceiling to make sure that everyone hears important announcements. All of the individual components are networked via the Building Integra on System from Bosch. It makes it easy for the well-trained security guards to monitor and control everything. And to ensure that everything func ons reliably in the long term, experts from the Bosch center in Dresden will regularly check and service the system. Meyer stresses that “we don’t want our culture fans to run any risks.”

DEMYSTIFYING PLASTIC By Ar. Shrreyash Sarmalkar

Man's one of the greatest inven on ll date "Plas c", that doesn't occur naturally on its own. We are surrounded by various plas c products like drinking water/ aerated drink bo les, cups, glasses, etc. As we all are aware, many more items are made with plas c, too! Most computers use plas c, phones, furniture pieces like chairs are o en made from plas c, and even lots of cars are made with plas c! The word plas c is derived from the Greek word plas kos, which means able to be shaped or moulded. The name "plas c" refers to the property of plas city, which is the ability to deform without breaking.

Let's understand what plas c is all about! Study shows plas c products are very common in our modern life. According to an es mate, every year we use approximately 1.6 million barrels of oil just for producing plas c water bo les. plas c is any synthe c or semi-synthe c organic polymer. In addi on to other elements which may be present, plas cs always include carbon and hydrogen. This is why many plas cs begin with "poly," such as polyethylene, polystyrene, and polypropylene. Polymers o en are made of carbon and hydrogen and some mes oxygen, nitrogen, sulphur, chlorine, fluorine, phosphorous, or silicon. While plas cs may be made from just about any organic polymer, mostly industrial plas c is made from petrochemicals.

polythene. Polythene is produced from crude oil and natural gas, two non-renewable resources found underground, through a process known as the tubular film process. According to the U.S. Energy Informa on Administra on, "plas cs are made from liquid petroleum gases (LPG), natural gas liquids (NGL), and natural gas. LPG is byproduct of petroleum refining, and NGL are removed from natural gas before it enters transmission pipelines. (Source: h ps://myplas cfreelife.com Jul 27, 2007)

Thermoplas cs and thermose ng polymers are the two types of plas c. The polymer used to make a plas c is almost always mixed with addi ves, including colorants, plas cizers, stabilizers, fillers, and reinforcements. These addi ves affect the chemical composi on, chemical proper es, and mechanical proper es of a plas c and also affect its cost.

Plas cs are o en referred to by the acronyms for their chemical formulae: • Polyethylene terephthalate-PET or PETE • High-density polyethylene-HDPE • Polyvinyl chloride-PVC • Polypropylene-PP • Polystyrene-PS • Low-density polyethylene-LDPE

One common ques on which comes to almost everyone's mind is, where did the plas c come from and how it is manufactured? Study reveals plas c bags are made out of polyethylene or

Let's look into the harmful effects of plas c on human health! Study shows due to the use of chemical addi ves during plas c produc on, plas cs have poten ally harmful effects that could prove to be carcinogenic or promote endocrine

disrup on. Some of the addi ves are used as phthalate plas cizers and brominated flame retardants. Collec vely, these harmful chemicals are known to cause the following severe health problems: cancer, endometriosis, neurological damage, endocrine disrup on, birth defects and child developmental disorders, reproduc ve damage, immune damage, asthma, and mul ple organ damage. (Source: h ps://www.motherearthliving.com) Few advantages and disadvantages of using plas c! The advantages of using plas cs are that they are economical, durable, strong, water resistant, lightweight, and resistant to corrosion and chemicals. Some disadvantages of using plas cs are that they pose a danger to wildlife, pollute the environment, pose difficul es during recycling and do not degrade quickly, rather takes many centuries before nature is able to degrade it. Chemical dangers are also high, because both crea on and recycling of plas c produce toxic materials of many kinds. Further the study reveals process of plas c product decomposi on can last from 400 to 1000 years. In the current scenario waste plas c will con nue to clog our waterways, oceans, forests, and harm other natural habitats that are filled with animals who mistake dangerous plas c for food. As a green ini a ve below are few easy ps to replace plas c in your daily life!  Our daily day to day grocery shopping can be done by using a fabric/ paper/ reusable shopping bag  Use own brass/ copper/ silver metal glass to drink water  Use your own coffee cup mug  Say a big NO to plas c straws  Incase of invita ons save paper and plas c by using e-cards  Replace plas c wrapping paper with recycled wrapping paper or a paper bag  Use non-plas c ice cube trays  Avoid use of plas c toys  Replace plas c spoons with steel/ wooden/ edible spoons  Stop use of nylon ropes, instead use jute ropes  Skip the disposable razor  Avoid use of ballpoint pen! Use your phones and laptops to write something. Try using stainless steel ink or fountain pens  Stop using plas c soap dispensers

 A majority of the vegetables and fruits come in plas c packaging. A simple solu on is to prefer buying fresh foods and freeze them in reusable containers  Stop using garbage plas c bags  Replace plas c hairbrush with a wooden hairbrush.

To mi gate the problem, lots of recycling programs have become easily available and many scien sts and researchers are looking for ways to make plas cs more biodegradable. Let's see how long it really takes for various wastes to decompose in landfills (based on waste category) with some relevant sta s cs. It should be noted that the rate of decomposi on can depend upon landfill condi ons. Plas c Waste Plas c waste is one of many types of wastes that normally can take up to 1000 years to decompose in landfills. But plas c bags we use in our everyday life take 10-1000 years to decompose, while plas c bo les can take 450 years or more.

Disposable Diapers Just in the United States alone, every year more than 18 billion disposable diapers are thrown away. These disposable diapers take approximately 250-500 years to decompose in landfills, thus underscoring the efforts of programs offering diaper and absorbent hygiene product recycling.

depends on the type of food. Normally, an orange peel takes 6 months but an apple core or a banana peel takes around one month to decompose.

Aluminium Cans Every minute, of the day, more than 120,000 aluminium cans are recycled only in America. But, at the same me, in every three-month period, enough aluminium cans are thrown away in America that can rebuild the en re American commercial air fleet. Aluminium cans take 80-200 years in landfills to get completely decomposed. Glass Normally glass is very easy to recycle mainly for the fact that glass is made of sand. Simply breaking down the glass and mel ng it, we can produce new glass. But the shocking fact is that if glass is thrown away in landfills, it takes million years to decompose. And according to some sources, it doesn't decompose at all. Paper Waste Based on volume, paper the largest element in American landfills. Normally, it takes 2-6 weeks for landfills to get completely decomposed. If we recycle paper items, we can easily save a lot of landfill space, while reducing the energy and virgin material requirements of making non-recycled paper.

The Time Taken By Other Waste Items to Decompose Different sources have different informa on on actual me various waste items take in landfills to decompose. Cigare e Bu s - 10 - 12 years; Monofilament Fishing Line 600 years; Rubber-Boot Sole - 50 - 80 years; Foamed Plas c Cups - 50 years; Leather shoes - 25 - 40 years; Milk Cartons 5 years; Plywood - 1 - 3 years; Painted board - 13 years; Co on Glove - 3 months; Cardboard - 2 months; Styrofoam - It does not biodegrade; Nylon Fabric - 30 - 40 years; Tin can 50 years; Ropes - 3 - 14 months; Waxed milk carton - 3 months; Aluminium cans - 200 - 250 years; Train ckets - two weeks, Canvas products - 1 year; Ba eries - 100 years; Lumber 10 - 15 years, Sanitary Pads - 500 - 800 years; Wool Clothing 1-5 years; Tinfoil - It does not biodegrade. (Source: h ps://www.thebalancesmb.com) Seven Dials' book "101 ways to free yourself from plas c and save the world" talks about the need to combat plas c pollu on and explores some interes ng alterna ve solu ons.

Food Waste Food waste is a big problem in India (Food waste is seen in marriages, par es, etc.). This goes in landfill, instead can be composted. The me taken for food waste decomposing

Today mankind's major concern is the day a er day increasing waste volume. To mi gate this we can avoid use of products that generate waste materials that take more than a year to decompose in landfills through a proac ve effec ve recycling design. Moreover, the amount of energy required to recycle a product is excessive and unreasonable. Suggest to be Green with your Plas c by installing recycling equipment located at a convenient place in your society premises, thereby helping save our WORLD!
