The public health benefit of the vaccine is the main reason for its use.

Introduction Until recently, Drones and UAVs which were just a matter of curiosity, have fast become a critical part of military missions and low-enforcement operations. We are also witnessing commercialization of drones, as they are expanding their reach to oil and gas companies, news agencies, Survey Agencies, Land and Water resources protection agencies etc. However, the diminishing cost of drones and its easy access to public has resulted in a number of drones related incidents across the globe. The ever-evolving electronics and communication technologies have made drones smaller and light-weight, while increasing their efficiency in terms of payload capacity, speed, guidance and navigation, manoeuvrability, and range. These developments, though in many ways beneficial, also pose several threats, not only to public safety but also to security of critical infrastructures, defence establishments and installations, communication network and law & order institutions. Anti-social elements and insurgent groups 12

Law Enforcement and security agencies in our country strive to regulate and prevent these potential threats by adopting several measures. However, because of diverse frequency signature of drones and unavailability of an open source library for drone frequencies, it is a challenge to detect and neutralize these unmanned aerial vehicles effectively and efficiently.

Incidents that call for Attention! Last couple of years witnessed a growing number of drone related incidents worldwide. Let's look at some of these critical incidents reported, • UK: Following the reports of drone sightings close to the runway of Gatwick Airport, more than 1,000 flights were either cancelled or disrupted between 19th and 21st December 2018 impacting 140,000 passengers. • Saudi Arabia: The world's largest oil processing facility and oilfield was set on fire by a drone attack. The raids led to the interruption in the production of an estimated 5.7 million barrels of crude, which is about half of the country's total production. • France: Drones flew over the French Nuclear Power Facility in Normandy and dropped smoke canisters on the roof creating panic. • USA: A mysterious swarm of 17 to 30 large drones were spotted in the skies of Colorado and Nebraska, consecutively for several nights creating uncertainty among people and local authorities. • India: Arms & Ammunitions dropping incidents have been frequently reported at the northern borders using Drones • Spain: Flights were disrupted for over an hour at Madrid International Airport after reports of drone sighting in Airport zone. • Germany: Drone sightings at Frankfurt Airport resulted in suspension and diversion of several flights in May 2019 and March 2020. 67.7

Moreover, as shown in Figure-1, the worldwide shipments of consumer Drones have steadily increased over the past five to six years. In 2021, these numbers are expected to hit 67.7 Million and eventually by 2025 it is expected to be 4.1 Billion. With the rise in Drone population, the adverse incidents are also bound to exponentially increase, and it is paramount for any government to protect its borders, assets and people from these potential threats. If gone unchecked, these threats may result in loss of many lives and immense financial implications to the state. All the above discussed factors call for advanced C-UASs (CounterUnmanned Aerial System) with rapid detection capabilities and sophisticated jamming and neutralizing technologies.

Counter-Drone Systems - Key Technologies Counter-Drone Systems, also sometimes known as Anti-Drone systems or C-UAS, can be passive (simply looking or listening) or active (sending a signal out and analysing what comes back) and can perform several functions including, • Detection • Identification and Classification • Locating and Tracking • Generate Alerts and/or Trigger a Jamming System All the above functions do not occur or trigger at the same time, however, these are a chain of functions that perform almost in realtime once a drone is detected. There are several technologies that help detect a drone based on its distance, altitude, type, etc., the most common being Radars, optical sensors and acoustic sensors. These systems not only detect drones in the area of surveillance, but also detects birds, kites, other flying/floating objects and moving objects on ground. This is where Identification and Classification of objects come into picture. The system identifies various objects and classifies drones from the large clutter. Advanced C-UAS systems go one step further to even identify the drone detected by capturing its model, make, digital fingerprint, Radar signature, MAC Address (Media Access Control) etc. making it easy to trigger or deploy an appropriate counter-measure. It is great to detect, identify and classify a drone, however knowing its exact location enables the system to deploy effective counter measures. Advanced C-UAS systems can not only locate the drones with precision, but also provides information such as speed, flight direction and help track them in real-time. Drones have low Radar Cross Section (RCS) and relatively low speed these characteristics make the task of detection challenging, and thereafter, identification and localization even more so. Several approaches can be adopted to detect these aerial systems. These methods or technologies can broadly be classified as: • Radio Frequency (RF) Analysers • Radars • Video / Electro-optical (EO) Sensors (Cameras) and • Audio / Acoustic Sensors (Microphones) April 2021 - www.safesecuremagazine.com

None of the above by itself can effectively detect a drone reliably. An effective drone detection system needs to be designed based on the coverage range, angle and the surrounding environment. A multiple array of sensors with an overlapping coverage area in a layered architecture is the best and effective way of detecting the drones. Due to the rapidly evolving drone technologies, most military agencies are now embracing this multi-layered counter-measure approach, which offer higher detection ratios compared to the traditional systems.

RADIO FREQUENCY (RF) ANALYSERS Almost all drones use radio signals for communication, command and control. They receive commands from the remote controller and send data such as video, images, telemetry (GPS/GNSS location, battery status) etc. back to the remote control/ground station. RF Analysers consist of one or multiple antennas to receive signals and a processor to analyse the RF spectrum. They can be used in any type of environment, such as urban, hilly, noisy, forests, coastal, etc. to enhance and ensure airspace security. These RF sub-systems are designed to detect radio communication between a drone and its ground controller. Some RF Analysers can identify the drone make and model by analysing the waveform signature while some can even identify the MAC addresses of the drone and controller if they communicate over WIFI. Advanced RF Analysers can also facilitate real-time mapping of drones and the remote controller. There are several benefits of using RF Analyzers such as, relatively low cost, detects multiple drones 13

at a time, identifies the drone signature, and importantly works in real-time. By deploying multiple RF Analyzers simultaneously, the user can triangulate drones and its controllers. Since they are passive equipment, no license is warranted by lawenforcement authorities.

RF Analyzers have certain demerits though. If a drone is not using an RF sub-system (for instance, operating over 4G/5G mobile network or autonomous / pre-programmed drones), it will be totally invisible to an RF Analyzer. Moreover, RF Analyzers may also detect various other RF devices, such as WIFI routers, smart home appliances, industrial grade transmitters, etc. in the vicinity, making them less effective in crowded RF zones. Hence, RF Sensors alone may not be a reliable solution for drone detection.

Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) Radars are a type of phased array radars which use multiple antennas in a two-dimensional array to transmit the same phase-shifted waveform, using the principle of beamforming. These AESA RADARS works more like a human eye, where you must sweep retina from one corner to the other to observe the entire picture. Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) RADARS, on the other hand, can transmit different waveforms on all the antennas thereby working more like an eye of a fly, where you get the whole picture at once without any need of sweep. MIMO RADARS give amazing refresh rate, which dramatically improves detection and tracking, including swarms. It also helps in effective ground clutter removal.

RADARS RADAR is another popular technology for the detection of drones. Currently, various C-UAS use 2D as well as 3D RADARS for accurate detection and location of drones. 2D RADARS are quite good and can detect most types of drones in the market. However, they cannot provide information about altitude of the target. In real life scenario, real-time tracking, accurate classification, and precise cueing of other sensors/sub-systems on the target is a challenge without the altitude information. For example, a 2D RADAR can probably detect a drone which is 500m away and 15 deg on left, but it might be a drone or another moving object on ground. On the other hand, a 3D RADAR could provide the very crucial altitude information as well. Hence the data from a 3D RADAR is more legible and usable. In addition, a 3D RADARS can also precisely cue the Camera or a Jammer towards the detected drone. 14

One of the challenges of using RADARS is that drone's low altitude, flight velocity, and very small Radar Cross Section (RCS) make them extremely difficult to distinguish from the noise or clutter. This can be overcome by deploying other sensors in the C-UAS.

VISUAL SENSORS & IMAGE PROCESSING The Electro-Optical (EO) sensor (Bullet / PTZ / Thermal / Day-Night) Cameras combined with April 2021 - www.visionmediahitech.com

Artificial Intelligence (AI) based image processing software enable the visual detection & classification of drones. Based on the number and types of cameras, EO sensor can cover a Field of View (FoV) from 30 deg to 360 deg. The EO-based systems provide dedicated cameras for detection, classification and tracking. EO sensors provide a visual evidence of drone's presence in the coverage region. These systems can be made fully autonomous, but their range is usually limited by the focal length and optical zoom capabilities of the camera's lens. Currently, cameras in the market provide a detection range of up to 2-3 Km, which may further reduce based on climatic conditions such as cloud, dust, rain or fog.

Several arrays of microphones can be used for rough triangulation of the target. The acoustic sensors may not be ideal to locate the target, however, they can provide the direction of drone. They have several other limitations such as, inefficiency in noisy environmental conditions and short detection range (Max 300 - 500 meters), etc.

ACOUSTIC SENSORS Acoustic Sensors are a microphone or an array of microphones, which detect the sound made by drone and calculate its direction. These sensors can be used whenever the radars line of sight is obstructed. The acoustic sensors cost relatively less, which makes it economically feasible.

An effective and reliable Counter-Drone system needs to have all-weather detection, identification, classification, localization, tracking and countermeasure technologies along with an open C2 software, which allows integration of a wide variety of 3rd party sensors. The introduction of Artificial Intelligence is greatly enabling drone detection systems by increasing efficiency and reducing false alarms. Further, AI Algorithms provide the required intelligence for autonomous operation, thus reducing the dependency on humans to trigger a counter measure. An advanced C-UAS must have a minimum detection range of 10 kms, a combination of multiple sensors that include EO Cameras, Radar, RF Analyser, WIFI Detectors, Acoustic Sensors & Jammers, an extensive library of Drone Signatures, C2 Software integrable with the COTS sensors, along with continuous autonomous operation.

Enabling Better Fire Safety & Implementation. – Practical Guide Author - Abhishek Chhabra When people in India started writing the building codes around 6th century AD (Vastu Shastras) the options on methodologies of construction and materials were very limited and the behavior of people was fairly predictable. Not anymore! Nowadays the complexity and variables affecting construction have been changing very quickly. And unfortunately, the laws and rules (Building Codes) which define minimum requirements takes several years to change. This lag is a systemic challenge and is world-wide. But certain key guides that have been published by International Organization for Standardization (ISO) continue to help define quality and safety across all industries while the laws catchup. Whether it is electrical safety, industrial products, food, pharma or inspections inside factories, construction sites or hospitals. These guides provide the much-needed unbiased language to help procure and deliver products and services in a fastchanging world. Let us understand how to use these to ensure Fire Safety too.

Any procurement needs an unbiased system that brings about the basic assurance needed for any transaction - "getting what you want". With so many fire accidents happening in India (and the world); everyone wants these fires to not threaten Life and avoid Property Damage. This note suggests simple ways to implement actionable steps that can be added to Technical Specifications and Commercial Clauses across contracts to ensure Fire Safety. Thus, safeguarding investments and ensuring minimum damage to life and property in case of a fire incident.  Who are the Stakeholders? For the Construction Industry, the Image 01 defines some key stakeholders who need to enter into commercial contracts (to "get what they want") with each other. The key language used to define expectations is often a Specification Document. Now defining Fire Safety and its Implementation often slips out due to lack of awareness to ask "exactly" what is needed.

Key activities to Ensure Fire Safety

These stakeholders get involved directly or indirectly in Design, Build and Maintain. Image 02 defines some key steps that ensure the learnings from past mistakes (captured in Building Codes and other guidance documents) are avoided. The tricky part is implementing these concepts with the limitations of time, money, availability of correct products or materials and lack of training, awareness and comprehension of implementation. A better understanding and usage of the referred ISO guides makes it easy to Design, Build and Maintain. A common thread across these steps is procurement of materials and repeatability of installation. Getting commercial and technical language to align across the contracts of stakeholders makes it easy to assure that what is designed is getting delivered.  Simplifying Procurement: Materials & Installation for Fire Safety Before reading on we should know the real difference between voluntary and mandatory. Making anything mandatory requires a Law to be enacted; this requires a consensus. Such laws require Technical Documents (like Building Codes) to be referred too. And these Technical Documents also require a consensus. Here lies the risk due to the lag which is well known. A lot of construction gets finished while these two consensuses are arrived at. Hence large hotels chains, hospitals, commercial and retail establishments and insurers and reinsurers never rely on just the minimum mandatory requirements in any given geography. They understand that the rate at which building materials and construction methodologies evolve; reliance on April 2021 - www.safesecuremagazine.com

minimum mandatory is high risk and will lead to loss of reputation, money and of course life and property. So, it is common practice to use more evolved and adopted Building codes and even more. Hence the Technical Specifications need to be current and updated. And these are implemented using advanced conformity assessment mechanisms for increased assurance. Conformity Assessment is all the activities completed to determine if a product or service meets specific requirements (Int). Let us read how experts from 165 countries (including India) making up the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) define these conformity assessment mechanisms. Below standards have been helping government bodies as well as large investors and specification writers on ways to assess and define "getting what you want". See Image 03 which gives an overview of the terms and definitions used by ISO's Committee on Conformity Assessment (CASCO). Below are the three standards whose references should be utilized effectively for procurement. These three are used to describe a case study below. • ISO/IEC 17025: General Requirements for The Competence of Testing and Calibration Laboratories. • ISO/IEC 17065: Conformity assessment Requirements for bodies certifying products, processes and services. • ISO/IEC 17020: Conformity assessment Requirements for the operation of various types of bodies performing inspection. 17

Terms and Definitions from ISO's Conformity Assessment committees

 Understanding simple steps with a Case Study A 300 room 5-star luxury hotel in Dubai would cost around 300-400 Million AED (600-800 Crore INR) to be built. The MEP works which is about 35% of this cost (~250 Crore INR) has key elements to create compartmentalization for ensuring Fire Safety. This includes Fire Doors, Partition Walls, as well as through penetrations which help ensure that a fire that gets initiated will be contained for 2 or 3 hours giving enough time for evacuation and rescue. If the specifications or implementation for this fire safety plan is weak or done incorrectly, the property may have a big fire and would be closed for about a year at the least. So, when re-negotiating with suppliers and contractors to save money here, it should be known what an impact such a savings could lead to. The impact of a small fire versus a huge fire! Without factoring in cost of land, the earnings of such a property (after removing operators' expenses, the earnings before interest, taxes, and amortization) are estimated to be about 50 Crore INR a year. In case of a fire which could be contained in a room, could turn into a massive accident. And the minimum time the Hotel would be closed is one year. In India this could be many years of lost earnings! Doing your 18

math here is easy. So, let us understand the steps that can be put in place to increase the assurance and minimize such a loss.  Step One (Designing & Specifying) To make sure the inherent fire safety (passive fire protection) will function let us look at the relationship between building materials, designs and installation. A board or a door cannot really contain a fire in a compartment on its own. Along with ensuring the repeatability of production of a (fire rated) board or (fire rated) door, a similar assurance is needed for all the components and verification of installation as per the design it has been validated by a conformity mechanism. Bear in mind that a Fire Test Report is only an indication that a Manufacturer and the Installer have the capability to produce and install a door/partition assembly that can contain a fire (for given number of hours). For assurance of supply to the project site you need to rely on a Certification and Listing Body. As it is uncommon to read how the Fire Door or Partition Assembly was installed in a test lab and impossible to find out how these were really manufactured from the test report! And of course, the certification body should be accredited by an independent accreditation body to certify based on April 2021 - www.visionmediahitech.com

ISO 17065. A self-accreditation is like saying that, "I am checking myself that my work is correct or not". On the same lines the test reports used for certification or verification should come from a Test Lab who has been accredited by an independent accreditation body to test based on ISO 17025. Inspectors validating the installations at the site should have qualification and experience that has been ratified using ISO 17020 by an independent accreditation body. To avoid such a situation (where a product seller or a test lab or a certification body claims that they are good) referencing these ISO standards correctly in specifications is critical.  Step Two (Understanding Certification & Listing) If a building material or a system is getting ready for a fire test, it is known that a fire test will happen on a given sample/assembly. This is very different from

measuring the weight of a commodity on a weighing scale or flow rate in a pipe or a wire. Hence when the lives of people and property damage are at stake; a better understanding and implementation of the assurance system is important. See the table 1 (Copyright ISO) from ISO 17067 guide in Image 04. This is used by ISO 17065 (for certification) in defining different types of Certification & Listing mechanisms that are used to increase assurance. Many certification bodies have programs that follow a very stringent mechanism (type 5 or higher) to provide high levels of assurance. As an example, the Fire & Life Safety Code in UAE published by the Civil Defense mandates product conformity as per Type 5 of this table in the Building Code. Large contracts, insurance companies and procurement specifications often use reference to these standards in defining unbiased mechanisms to get high levels of assurance to great detail.

Image 05 shows a typical block-diagram to explain the working of one such certification & listing assurance process.  Step 3 (Verification and maintenance of what is procured) Unlike procurement of consumer products where rights of consumers are protected by certain laws, Business to Business (B2B) procurement calls for everything to be specified in great details. Ensuring Fire Safety with so many different stakeholders (who all have different commercial motivations) needs a robust system for increased assurance. Luckily; there are already proven

We started with clearly defining an implementable design using published guides (Building Codes) and ensured that the specifications use correct references to enable assurance of materials procured and installations inspected.

Steps of a typical Certification program

The Image 06 describes these three steps to explain assurance of fire rated doors (and even other systems). The procurement specifications are created when the Fire Safety Plan is created. As an example, a list of Fire doors with their design configurations as well as ratings in hours is released. Here the specifications need to clearly define certification & listing as procurement criteria. Next, when the contractors are using these specifications, they need to understand how certification can be verified (using listing directories like www.tbwcert.com). Procurement submittals need to be cross-verified. And then when the procured fire doors arrive at the site; Step 3 becomes critical. Traceability evidence like the certification labels should be verifiable. Often the online certification directories 20

mechanism followed around the world to implement this. After implementing assurance of materials via a stringent certification and listing process, the ISO 17020 provides the language to ensure that installations can demonstrate repeatability. Uninspected even my daughter will skip eating vegetables!

Installation needs to be inspected to avoid voiding any warranties and to ensure that the money spent to design is not wasted by ensuring a validation and verification. In conclusion, stringent verification processes for the procurement of materials as well as affirmation of installation is easy to demand for. The Fire Safety Management in Factories, Residential, Institutional or Commercial Buildings pose major Fire Threats, mostly it is in latent nature. Unless and other wise the active and passive fire protects in place with its regular maintenance and upkeep, whatever the measures we propose will become futile. The frequent Fire trainings, mock drills and audits are the backbone of Fire Prevention. Consequences of a major fire represent real risk to businesses in terms of injury to people, property damage and business interruption. Key Definitions: Fire Load - is a measure of the amount of flammable material present. It is proportional to the quantity and heat capacity of flammable materials. Passive Fire Protection - are measures which do not require any outside intervention to provide protection in the case of a fire (e.g. fire walls). Active Fire Protection - are measures which require either manual or automatic intervention to detect and extinguish fires (e.g. sprinklers). 3. Assessment and Arrangements: • Each site, facility or location should assess the risk of fire and the resulting consequences and have arrangements to reduce these to an acceptable level. This assessment should be reviewed periodically. • Arrangements should include provision for the prevention and detection of fires, the protection of people, assets, and the environment. • There should be plans to deal with fires and its consequences should one occur. That should be documented, implemented, regularly tested, and reviewed. Persons nominated for specific actions in an emergency should be trained. Additionally, detailed 'Pre fire plans' should be prepared, communicated and reviewed regularly by sites e.g. refineries. • All fire incidents should be recorded, investigated and the lessons shared. • In-house firefighting facilities and equipment should be specified, additional arrangements agreed with local fire brigade and included in written procedures. • Employees should be trained in emergency response and evacuation. Designated employees should be trained in the use of available firefighting equipment. • Each site should have access to a person with appropriate fire safety expertise, who should advise on the adequacy of the plans and arrangements, assist in the assessment of the fire hazards associated with processes, materials and ignition sources ensure that the site procedures are soundly based and identify areas for improvement. 4. The following should be included when planning for fire prevention: • Fire and Explosion hazards of materials and operations should be made known to those who work with them. • Materials which contribute to the fire load should be controlled and stocks kept to a minimum • Incompatible materials which could react to cause a fire or explosion should be segregated. • Where appropriate, materials and/or equipment should be labeled to indicate a fire hazard. 5. In considering firefighting facilities the following should be taken into account: • The provision of appropriate equipment (portable extinguishers, hose reels, fire water system etc.) for use by local personnel. • The involvement of local 'external' fire brigades who should be given full access to any appropriate information. • The provision of specific on-site equipment (e.g. fire quenching systems) and/or occupants/floor

marshals and Fire & security personnel trained in Fire Fighting • The amount of firefighting water required including the means to ensure an adequate supply, together with drainage and containment facilities of contaminated run-off. • Training for those people expected to use fire suppression equipment (e.g. hose lines) 6. Controls and Monitoring: • Sources of ignition should be identified and controlled, and hot work permits used. • There should be regular inspection of workplaces to detect fire hazards e.g. machinery and equipment including electrical systems, HouseKeeping. • Where needed, the system of 'De matching at the Gate' should be implemented. • Control gates: Wherever the system of control gates are available for hazardous areas, depositing of mobile phones, matchbox, lighters etc. shall be practiced. • Appropriate separation distances/physical barriers should be maintained between potential sources of fire and equipment/facilities. • Fire detection and protection measures (passive and/or active) must be regularly inspected, tested and maintained. • Precautions against arson should be put in place including appropriate security to prevent unauthorized access. 7. Emergency response arrangements should include: • Systems to raise the alarm quickly in the event of a fire for the local and/or external fire service to be called; Assigning designated person(s) to call external fire service in case of emergency. • A written and rehearsed plan covering means of escape and evacuation of all personnel from all areas of the site. • Plans detailing how fires will be tackled, and what measures need to be taken to minimize harm to the environment by airborne and waterborne contamination. These plans should be regularly tested.

There are microbes (more commonly known as "germs") everywhere. In the air we breathe, in the food we eat, on our skin and within our entire body. Microbes are essential for our existence, but she are the bad guys and they are called pathogens. Pathogens are infectious microbes in the form of viruses, bacteria, parasites, or even fungi that can cause disease. Each pathogen has its own unique antigen. An antigen is almost like a pathogen's ID card. Antibodies are like our body's security guards. They check the IDs (antigens) of incoming microbes. Antibodies are proteins that identify and neutralise threats to our body. When a pathogen enters our body with a never-before-seen antigen, our body doesn't recognise the threat right away. It takes time for our body to develop antibodies capable of identifying the antigen and neutralising the threat. During that time, we get sick. Once we have antibodies that recognise the antigen of a particular pathogen, we become immune to that pathogen. Unfortunately, some pathogens evolve VERY rapidly, developing new antigens our body doesn't recognise. This can cause us to become repeatedly ill with similar diseases or get repeat vaccinations. Cold and flu viruses are prime examples of this.

 How do Traditional Vaccines Work? Traditional vaccines inject a weakened or inactive part of a pathogen into your body. This way, our body has time to recognise the threat and develop antibodies without us getting sick. Vaccines work well majority of the time, but there are cases of people reporting mild symptoms after getting a vaccine. These symptoms are typically minor compared to the full-blown disease, however. This is how the world effectively coped with the dreaded smallpox pandemic. People were exposed people to cowpox, a virus similar to smallpox, but much weaker and prevented people from getting smallpox. We are now on the verge of completely eliminating polio. The near-elimination of polio is particularly noteworthy because like COVID-19 there are many asymptomatic cases that make it difficult to trace. Therefore universal vaccination is a very good idea. The COVID-19 vaccines now developed are unlike traditional vaccines. They are messenger RNA vaccines which do NOT contain a weakened or inactive part of a pathogen. They do not contain any part of the coronavirus or any other virus, for that matter.

Clinical trials first start with a small batch of volunteers, followed by several (usually) stages of trials where each subsequent trial has larger group of volunteers across wide range of age, race, weight, body types and other factors.

 How do COVID-19 Vaccines Work? Our body's cells contain DNA. This DNA is a software code for how our body works. Like a script or blueprint. This code gets copied into RNA messages. The RNA messages get translated into proteins that do various jobs. Imagine a construction blueprint for an entire city. The blueprint contains instructions for where to pave streets, where to build City Hall, where to build police and fire departments, commercial districts, residential districts, a sewage system, power lines, etc... There are foremen who supervise all the different construction projects. These foremen read the blueprint and give directions to the construction workers. In this comparison, we are the city. The blueprint is our DNA. The supervisors are RNA messengers. The workers are proteins. As mentioned earlier, that antibodies are proteins... The job of these particular proteins is, to recognise and neutralise threats to our body. In the city metaphor, they're our body's police officers. A Messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccine sends a message to your body's cells to create antibody proteins that recognise a pathogen's antigen. Once those antibodies are created, our body's cells throw those instructions in the trash. Quite frankly, mRNA vaccines are a remarkable scientific achievement. The speed with which the COVID-19 vaccines were created is particularly impressive. In order to do this, scientists had to sequence the genome of the COVID-19 virus. Coronavirus is a bit of a weirdo in that it has no DNA. It only has RNA, which is common among viruses. Scientists then studied the RNA and identified which messages do what. Once they identified the RNA message responsible for creating a protein that acts as an antigen, they knew what to put in the vaccine. The beauty of vaccination by this method is that our own body creates the antigen. Our body follows the instructions of the RNA message to create the antigen itself. It is then able to develop antibodies trained to recognise and neutralise that antigen. Half of the volunteers received the vaccine; half received the placebo. The placebo is a harmless imitation that lacks any therapeutic value beyond the psychological effects of thinking you received the vaccine. The vaccine is administered in 2 doses. The clinical trials observed that new cases of COVID-19 tapered off 10 days after the first dose. The efficacy after this first dose was observed to be approximately 60%. Clinical trials found the efficacy to leap to 92% to 95% after the second dose. Thus scientific data suggests COVID-19 vaccines work just fine for the vast majority of people. This is consistent with the efficacy of most other vaccines.

 Are the COVID-19 Vaccines Safe? Experts and authorities who reviewed the results of the clinical trials, found the vaccines effective and with no major issues. Some adverse effects noted are that many people who were vaccinated experienced fatigue, headaches, and a few other minor side effects that only lasted a day. One of the concerns many people have about the COVID-19 vaccines is the speed with which they were developed. There is a natural fear that corners were cut in the usual safety regulations.
