Editor’s letter

If this is your first time holding Safe Place... hi. I’m glad you’re here, the whole idea of this issue came from a moment I had where I realized something embarrassingly simple: Most of us are walking around with power we don’t even claim. Not because we don’t have it but because life gets loud, people get in our heads, we become parents and we forget who we are when no one’s watching. This issue isn’t here to preach at you. I’m not here to tell you to “believe in yourself” like a motivational poster in a middle school hallway. I just want to invite you to check in with yourself for a second. Think about how far you’ve actually come. Think about the things you never talk about the stuff you handled quietly, the changes you made when no one was clapping, the soft wins only you noticed. That’s discipline. That’s strength. That’s you taking your life back, piece by piece, that’s YOU. BE YOURZ is a reminder that your story is still yours to shape. And no matter how old you are or how many times you feel like you’re “starting over,” it’s never too late to love yourself better or to step into the version of you that’s been waiting. These pages aren’t about perfection. They’re about taking a step each day, real moments that make us stop and breathe and say, “Okay... maybe I’m doing better than I thought.” If anything in here makes you feel seen even a little, then this issue did its job. Welcome to Issue 8. Take what you need. Leave the rest. And whatever you do, just be yourz. Editor-in-Chief, Safe Place Magazine

Somewhere between who you were and who you’re becoming, there’s a quiet space we don’t visit enough. It usually shows up late at night. When the world finally slows down. When the noise fades just enough for your thoughts to get loud. That’s where reflection lives. SAFE PLACE MAGAZINE

Not the Instagram kind. Not the “look how far I’ve come” caption. The real kind; where you replay moments you don’t talk about. Where you think about choices you made just to survive. Where you wonder if you’re behind, or right on time, or exactly where you’re supposed to be. If you’re being honest, you’ve been through more than you give yourself credit for. You’ve carried responsibilities that didn’t come with instructions. You’ve made decisions without knowing how they’d turn out. You’ve kept going on days when quitting would’ve made more sense. And somehow, quietly, you adapted. That matters. We spend so much time rushing toward what’s next that we forget to acknowledge what’s already happened, the growth that didn’t announce itself, the strength that showed up without permission, the lessons that came disguised as setbacks.

PAUSE HERE. NOT TO JUDGE YOURSELF. NOT TO REWRITE THE PAST. JUST TO NOTICE. WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU SURPRISED YOURSELF? WHAT DID YOU SURVIVE THAT YOU ONCE THOUGHT YOU WOULDN’T? WHO WERE YOU BEFORE THE WORLD TOLD YOU WHO TO BE? REFLECTION ISN’T ABOUT LIVING IN THE PAST. IT’S ABOUT UNDERSTANDING IT; SO IT DOESN’T CONTROL YOU. YOU DON’T HAVE TO ROMANTICIZE YOUR JOURNEY TO RESPECT IT. YOU DON’T HAVE TO HAVE EVERYTHING FIGURED OUT TO ADMIT YOU’VE GROWN. SOMETIMES REFLECTION IS AS SIMPLE AS REALIZING, “I’M NOT WHO I USED TO BE… AND THAT’S NOT A BAD THING.” IF YOU’RE FEELING TIRED LATELY, IT MIGHT NOT BE BECAUSE YOU’RE WEAK. IT MIGHT BE BECAUSE YOU’VE BEEN STRONG FOR A LONG TIME. SO SIT WITH YOURSELF FOR A MOMENT. LET THE NOISE PASS. LET THE COMPARISON FADE. LET THE TIMELINE STOP CHASING YOU. YOUR LIFE ISN’T A RACE - IT’S A STORY, AND EVERY CHAPTER COUNTS, EVEN THE QUIET ONES. BEFORE YOU TURN THE PAGE, ASK YOURSELF:

What version of me deserves more credit than I give them? What am I proud of, even if no one ever noticed? What am I ready to release so I can move forward lighter?

HOYD What does HOYD mean?

It means numerous things. Obviously, if you’re putting God first, it determines where you’re going to go in life, but also whatever you’re holy to on a day to day basis also determines that too.

How did you get into hats? my father; I always watched my father grow up wearing hats. It could have been a fitted baseball cap, football cat, and so I always seen that, and kind of put it into my own swag. Would you say your father is your inspiration? Most definitely. I see him work hard every day, and so every day I try to wake up myself and reach that potential that he set forward for me, what was your vision behind the flannel fitted? one of my favorite shows growing up was Fresh Prince of Bel Air, and I saw Will Smith wear a flannel type of hat. So I kind of just wanted to make it into my own with the fitted.

N I K C LO WIN T Most of us already know what we need to do. The way you know when you’re avoiding something. The way you know when you’re not showing up for yourself the way you used to. The way you know what small habits made you feel more like you before life got busy. Somewhere along the way, we got distracted. Not because we’re lazy but because the world keeps pulling at us. Work, bills, expectations, notifications, survival. Days start blending together, and suddenly we’re moving through life on autopilot, telling ourselves we’ll get back to ourselves “soon.” BE yourZ is just a reminder to slow down and remember. Remember the little things that grounded you. The routines that made your days feel intentional. The moments where you felt present instead of just productive. Becoming who you already are doesn’t happen through massive, dramatic changes. It happens through small choices; the ones that don’t look impressive from the outside, but quietly change how you move through the world. Choosing to wake up with purpose. Choosing to protect your energy. Choosing to keep promises to yourself, even the small ones. That’s control. Not forcing life but participating in it. ~

Control doesn’t come from having everything figured out. It comes from choosing, deliberately, how you spend your time, your energy, your focus. From realizing that every day you wake up, you’re either reinforcing old patterns or building new ones. And the wild part? It only takes one choice to start taking your life back. One honest “I’m done doing this to myself.” One “I know this is uncomfortable, but I’m choosing it anyway.” One moment where you stop waiting to feel ready and decide to act with what you have.

BE yourZ is owning your pace, your process, your path. It’s choosing yourself even when it’s inconvenient. It’s realizing that no one is coming to save you and that’s not scary, it’s powerful. You don’t need permission. You don’t need a perfect plan. You just need to decide and then decide again tomorrow. This isn’t about pressure. It’s about respect. Respect for the person you’ve been. Respect for the person you’re becoming. So stand on what you’ve learned. Move with intention. Build discipline where motivation can’t reach. And take control of your life, not all at once, but one deliberate choice at a time.

you’re not powerless. You’ve always had a choice. This is just your reminder to use it.

You wake up every day entitled to nothing. No guarantees. No shortcuts. No one owes you anything. You can have talent(plenty of it) but without discipline, without focus, without execution, what does that get you? Nothing. If you get complacent… if you stop paying attention to details… if you assume things will just work out what does that lead to? Nothing. And that’s the point. Nothing is acceptable except your best. Everything comes down to what you choose to do each day; how you prepare, how you focus, how you show up. Being your best isn’t about one moment or one performance. It’s about stacking the right habits and building on positive execution, day after day.

That’s the standard. That’s the expectation. And it shouldn’t be anything else.
