La creación En el principio creó Dios los cielos y la tierra.

La tierra estaba desordenada y vacía, las tinieblas estaban sobre la faz del abismo y el espíritu de Dios se movía sobre la faz de las aguas.

3 Dijo Dios: «Sea la luz». Y fue la luz.

4 Vio Dios que la luz era buena, y separó la luz de las tinieblas.

5 Llamó a la luz «día», y a las tinieblas llamó «noche». Y fue la tarde y la mañana del primer día.

Luego dijo Dios: «Haya un firmamento en medio de las aguas, para que separe las aguas de las aguas».

E hizo Dios un firmamento que separó las aguas que estaban debajo del firmamento, de las aguas que estaban sobre el firmamento. Y fue así.

8 Al firmamento llamó Dios «cielos». Y fue la tarde y la mañana del segundo día.

9 Dijo también Dios: «Reúnanse las aguas que están debajo de los cielos en un solo lugar, para que se descubra lo seco». Y fue así.

10 A la parte seca llamó Dios «tierra», y al conjunto de las aguas lo llamó «mares». Y vio Dios que era bueno.

Después dijo Dios: «Produzca la tierra hierba verde, hierba que dé semilla; árbol que dé fruto según su especie, cuya semilla esté en él, sobre la tierra». Y fue así.

Produjo, pues, la tierra hierba verde, hierba que da semilla según su naturaleza, y árbol que da fruto, cuya semilla está en él, según su especie. Y vio Dios que era bueno.

13 Y fue la tarde y la mañana del tercer día.

14 Dijo luego Dios: «Haya lumbreras en el firmamento de los cielos para separar el día de la noche, que sirvan de señales para las estaciones, los días y los años, 15 y sean por lumbreras en el firmamento celeste para alumbrar sobre la tierra». Y fue así.

16 E hizo Dios las dos grandes lumbreras: la lumbrera mayor para que señoreara en el día, y la lumbrera menor para que señoreara en la noche; e hizo también las estrellas.

17 Las puso Dios en el firmamento de los cielos para alumbrar sobre la tierra, 18 señorear en el día y en la noche y para separar la luz de las tinieblas. Y vio Dios que era bueno.

2 The earth was without form, and void; and darkness wasa on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.

3 Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light.

4 And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness.

5 God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. So the evening and the morning were the first day.

6 Then God said, “Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.”

7 Thus God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament; and it was so.

8 And God called the firmament Heaven. So the evening and the morning were the second day.

9 Then God said, “Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear”; and it was so.

10 And God called the dry land Earth, and the gathering together of the waters He called Seas. And God saw that it was good.

11 Then God said, “Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb that yields seed, and the fruit tree that yields fruit according to its kind, whose seed is in itself, on the earth”; and it was so.

12 And the earth brought forth grass, the herb that yields seed according to its kind, and the tree that yields fruit, whose seed is in itself according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.

13 So the evening and the morning were the third day.

14 Then God said, “Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs and seasons, and for days and years; 15 and let them be for lights in the firmament of the heavens to give light on the earth”; and it was so.

16 Then God made two great lights: the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night. He made the stars also.

17 God set them in the firmament of the heavens to give light on the earth, 18 and to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good.

19 So the evening and the morning were the fourth day.

20 Then God said, “Let the waters abound with an abundance of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the face of the firmament of the heavens.”

I was also blameless before Him, And I kept myself from my iniquity.

Therefore the Lord has recompensed me according to my righteousness, According to my cleanness in His eyes.a “With the merciful You will show Yourself merciful; With a blameless man You will show Yourself blameless; With the pure You will show Yourself pure; And with the devious You will show Yourself shrewd.

You will save the humble people; But Your eyes are on the haughty, that You may bring them down.

“For You are my lamp, O Lord; The Lord shall enlighten my darkness.

For by You I can run against a troop; By my God I can leap over a wall.

As for God, His way is perfect; The word of the Lord is proven; He is a shield to all who trust in Him. “For who is God, except the Lord?

And I have destroyed them and wounded them, So that they could not rise; They have fallen under my feet.

For You have armed me with strength for the battle; You have subdued under me those who rose against me.

You have also given me the necks of my enemies, So that I destroyed those who hated me.

They looked, but there was none to save; Even to the Lord, but He did not answer them.

Then I beat them as fine as the dust of the earth; I trod them like dirt in the streets, And I spread them out.

Entonces envié mensajeros para decirles: «Estoy ocupado en una gran obra y no puedo ir; porque cesaría la obra si yo la abandonara para ir a vosotros».

4 Cuatro veces me enviaron mensajes sobre el mismo asunto, y yo les respondí de la misma manera.

5 Entonces Sanbalat me envió a su criado para decir lo mismo por quinta vez, con una carta abierta en su mano, 6 en la cual estaba escrito: «Se ha oído entre las naciones, y Gasmu lo dice, que tú y los judíos pensáis rebelaros y que por eso edificas tú el muro, con la mira, según estas palabras, de ser tú su rey; 7 y que has puesto profetas que, refiriéndose a ti, proclamen en Jerusalén: “¡Hay rey en Judá!”. Estas palabras van a llegar a los oídos del rey; ven, por tanto, y consultemos juntos».

Entonces envié yo a decirle: «No hay nada de lo que dices, sino que son invenciones de tu corazón».

Porque todos ellos nos amedrentaban, diciendo: «Se debilitarán las manos de ellos en la obra, y no será terminada». «¡Ahora, pues, oh Dios, fortalece tú mis manos!».

10 Después fui a casa de Semaías hijo de Delaía hijo de Mehetabel, porque estaba encerrado. Él me dijo: —Reunámonos en la casa de Dios, dentro del Templo, y cerremos las puertas, porque vienen a matarte; sí, esta noche vendrán a matarte.

Pero yo le respondí: —¿Un hombre como yo ha de huir? ¿Y quién, que fuera como yo, entraría al Templo para salvarse la vida? No entraré.

12 Reconocí que Dios no lo había enviado, sino que decía aquella profecía contra mí porque Tobías y Sanbalat lo habían sobornado.

13 Pues fue sobornado para intimidarme, para que así yo pecara. Ellos aprovecharían esto para crearme mala fama y desprestigiarme.

14 «¡Acuérdate, Dios mío, de Tobías y de Sanbalat, conforme a estas cosas que hicieron; también acuérdate de la profetisa Noadías y de los otros profetas que procuraban infundirme miedo!».

Fue terminado, pues, el muro, el veinticinco del mes de Elul, en cincuenta y dos días.

16 Cuando lo oyeron todos nuestros enemigos, temieron todas las naciones que estaban alrededor de nosotros; se sintieron humillados y reconocieron que por nuestro Dios había sido hecha esta obra.

17 En aquellos días los principales de Judá enviaban muchas cartas a Tobías y recibían las de éste.

18 Porque muchos en Judá se habían aliado con él, pues era yerno de Secanías hijo de Ara; y Johanán su hijo había tomado por mujer a la hija de Mesulam hijo de Berequías.

So I sent messengers to them, saying, “I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down. Why should the work cease while I leave it and go down to you?”

4 But they sent me this message four times, and I answered them in the same manner.

5 Then Sanballat sent his servant to me as before, the fifth time, with an open letter in his hand.

It is reported among the nations, and Geshema says, that you and the Jews plan to rebel; therefore, according to these rumors, you are rebuilding the wall, that you may be their king.

And you have also appointed prophets to proclaim concerning you at Jerusalem, saying, “There is a king in Judah!” Now these matters will be reported to the king. So come, therefore, and let us consult together.

Then I sent to him, saying, “No such things as you say are being done, but you invent them in your own heart.”

9 For they all were trying to make us afraid, saying, “Their hands will be weakened in the work, and it will not be done.”

Now therefore, O God, strengthen my hands.

10 Afterward I came to the house of Shemaiah the son of Delaiah, the son of Mehetabel, who was a secret informer; and he said, “Let us meet together in the house of God, within the temple, and let us close the doors of the temple, for they are coming to kill you; indeed, at night they will come to kill you.”

11 And I said, “Should such a man as I flee? And who is there such as I who would go into the temple to save his life? I will not go in!”

Then I perceived that God had not sent him at all, but that he pronounced this prophecy against me because Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him.

13 For this reason he was hired, that I should be afraid and act that way and sin, so that they might have cause for an evil report, that they might reproach me.

14 My God, remember Tobiah and Sanballat, according to these their works, and the prophetess Noadiah and the rest of the prophets who would have made me afraid.

The Wall Completed 15 So the wall was finished on the twenty-fifth day of Elul, in fifty-two days.

16 And it happened, when all our enemies heard of it, and all the nations around us saw these things, that they were very disheartened in their own eyes; for they perceived that this work was done by our God. 17 Also in those days the nobles of Judah sent many letters to Tobiah, and the letters of Tobiah came to them.

18 For many in Judah were pledged to him, because he was the son-in-law of Shechaniah the son of Arah, and his son Jehohanan had married the daughter of Meshullam the son of Berechiah.

Then they despised the pleasant land; They did not believe His word, But complained in their tents, And did not heed the voice of the Lord.

Therefore He raised His hand in an oath against them, To overthrow them in the wilderness, To overthrow their descendants among the nations, And to scatter them in the lands.

They joined themselves also to Baal of Peor, And ate sacrifices made to the dead.

Thus they provoked Him to anger with their deeds, And the plague broke out among them.

Then Phinehas stood up and intervened, And the plague was stopped.

And that was accounted to him for righteousness To all generations forevermore.

They angered Him also at the waters of strife,a So that it went ill with Moses on account of them; Because they rebelled against His Spirit, So that he spoke rashly with his lips.

‘This people honors Me with their lips, But their heart is far from Me. And in vain they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’a

For laying aside the commandment of God, you hold the tradition of menb —the washing of pitchers and cups, and many other such things you do.”

He said to them, “All too well you reject the commandment of God, that you may keep your tradition.

10 For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother’;c and, ‘He who curses father or mother, let him be put to death.’d 11But you say, ‘If a man says to his father or mother, “Whatever profit you might have received from me is Corban”—’ (that is, a gift to God), 12 then you no longer let him do anything for his father or his mother, 13 making the word of God of no effect through your tradition which you have handed down. And many such things you do.”

14 When He had called all the multitude to Himself, He said to them, “Hear Me, everyone, and understand: 15 There is nothing that enters a man from outside which can defile him; but the things which come out of him, those are the things that defile a man.

16 If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear!”e 17 When He had entered a house away from the crowd, His disciples asked Him concerning the parable.

18 So He said to them, “Are you thus without understanding also? Do you not perceive that whatever enters a man from outside cannot defile him,

because it does not enter his heart but his stomach, and is eliminated, thus purifying all foods?”f 19

And He said, “What comes out of a man, that defiles a man.

21 For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, 20

31 Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.

No One Knows the Day or Hour 32 “But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.

33 Take heed, watch and pray; for you do not know when the time is.

34 It is like a man going to a far country, who left his house and gave authority to his servants, and to each his work, and commanded the doorkeeper to watch.

35 Watch therefore, for you do not know when the master of the house is coming—in the evening, at midnight, at the crowing of the rooster, or in the morning— 36 lest, coming suddenly, he find you sleeping.

The Plot to Kill Jesus After two days it was the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread. And the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might take Him by trickery and put Him to death.

2 But they said, “Not during the feast, lest there be an uproar of the people.”

The Anointing at Bethany 3 And being in Bethany at the house of Simon the leper, as He sat at the table, a woman came having an alabaster flask of very costly oil of spikenard. Then she broke the flask and poured it on His head.

4 But there were some who were indignant among themselves, and said, “Why was this fragrant oil wasted?

5 For it might have been sold for more than three hundred denarii and given to the poor.” And they criticized her sharply.

6 But Jesus said, “Let her alone. Why do you trouble her? She has done a good work for Me. For you have the poor with you always, and whenever you wish you may do them good; but Me you do not have always.

8 She has done what she could. She has come beforehand to anoint My body for burial.

9 Assuredly, I say to you, wherever this gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be told as a memorial to her.”

Y vosotros estáis envanecidos. ¿No debierais más bien lamentarlo y haber quitado de en medio de vosotros al que cometió tal acción?

3 Ciertamente yo, como ausente en cuerpo pero presente en espíritu, como si estuviera presente he juzgado ya al que tal cosa ha hecho.

For who makes you differ from another? And what do you have that you did not receive? Now if you did indeed receive it, why do you boast as if you had not received it?

To the present hour we both hunger and thirst, and we are poorly clothed, and beaten, and homeless.

And we labor, working with our own hands. Being reviled, we bless; being persecuted, we endure; 12

being defamed, we entreat. We have been made as the filth of the world, the offscouring of all things until now.

Paul’s Paternal Care 14 I do not write these things to shame you, but as my beloved children I warn you.

15 For though you might have ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet you do not have many fathers; for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel.

16 Therefore I urge you, imitate me.

17 For this reason I have sent Timothy to you, who is my beloved and faithful son in the Lord, who will remind you of my ways in Christ, as I teach everywhere in every church.

18 Now some are puffed up, as though I were not coming to you.

19 But I will come to you shortly, if the Lord wills, and I will know, not the word of those who are puffed up, but the power.

20 For the kingdom of God is not in word but in power.

21 What do you want? Shall I come to you with a rod, or in love and a spirit of gentleness?

Immorality Defiles the Church It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and such sexual immorality as is not even nameda among the Gentiles—that a man has his father’s wife!

2 And you are puffed up, and have not rather mourned, that he who has done this deed might be taken away from among you.

3 For I indeed, as absent in body but present in spirit, have already judged (as though I were present) him who has so done this deed.
