As we gather for the 15th Annual Dancing for Safe Haven, I am filled with immense gratitude and pride. This year marks not only the 15th anniversary of this incredible event but also the 40th anniversary for Safe Haven Family Shelter. That is four decades of unwavering commitment to serving families experiencing homelessness in our community. This milestone is a testament to the enduring support of our community, donors, volunteers and partners. I invite you to not only enjoy this evening of dance and celebration but also to reflect on the impact of your support. The funds raised through this event play a crucial role in providing shelter-to-housing services and resources to families experiencing homelessness in our area.

For Safe Haven’s 40th anniversary, Joyce Lavery Roman is the 2024 Hero Award recipient for transformative leadership in her role as CEO from 2009-2021. When Joyce entered the doors of Safe Haven in 2009, she saw a lot of opportunities for enhancement, as the organization had recently weathered a leadership transition and an economic downturn.
She looked at the strengths---a critical mission, a devoted staff, a beloved family of donors and volunteers---and cast a vision for the organization to take an even larger leadership role in addressing family homelessness in Middle Tennessee.
Prior to joining Safe Haven, Joyce led the Nashville Chapter of the National Conference for Community and Justice for nearly a decade. With her research background and expertise in nonprofit leadership, she wanted to align Safe Haven’s programs with national best practices by working with organizations across the nation who were making strides in reducing family homelessness. She also fostered community systems improvement by collaborating with like-minded agency partners in Nashville.
Joyce hired Trey Lipman, an esteemed event director, to create a fundraising gala to celebrate the organization’s 25th anniversary, and Dancing for Safe Haven began in 2010, bringing a new audience to learn about the mission. That same year, Safe Haven took home the Center for Nonprofit Management’s Marvin Runyon Award for the biggest turnaround for a nonprofit organization. In 2011, Safe Haven began to plan for a capital campaign to expand the shelter facility, which was completed in 2013. In 2014, Safe Haven and United Way began a partnership that is now known as The Family Collective, comprised of 30 community partners collaborating to serve families experiencing homelessness in Middle Tennessee. This partnership helped Safe Haven to build capacity from serving 45 families to now serving over 330 families annually through shelter and housing programs.
Joyce was an influential and inspirational leader—bringing new donors and partners to strengthen the organization. She was a champion of staff, empowering them to step into larger leadership roles and encouraging professional and personal development. Many of her organizational accomplishments paved the way for Safe Haven to be where it is today.
Joyce is an alumnus of Leadership Nashville and has won several awards for her nonprofit leadership including the NBJ's Most Admired Nonprofit CEOs (2016 and 2018), CNM's CEO of the year finalist (2015), Bank of America Neighborhood Builder Award (2015), NBJ's Dynamic Duo Award (2013, with her colleague and friend, Trey Lipman). She holds a B.A. in English and an M.A in Applied Anthropology. Joyce has and continues to mentor young nonprofit leaders.
Her life in St. Louis began after marrying her new husband over two years ago, Dick Roman, a native St. Louisan. They enjoy photography, traveling (recently to Tanzania for a photo safari), and spending time with their combined eight grandchildren and extended families. Joyce now is a nonprofit consultant and serves on the boards of Home Sweet Home, which distributes furniture and household items to clients from partner organizations transitioning to stability and S.O.S., (Spirit of St. Louis), a women's philanthropic giving circle. We are grateful for Joyce's imprint on our history and for being the hero for Safe Haven and our families, just when we needed her most.

Our hearts are heavy from the loss of a beloved member of our Safe Haven Family, Steve Lowry. Steve was a supporter and volunteer of Safe Haven for over 22 years, donating countless hours of photography to capture Safe Haven’s signature events and most significant milestones. Tonight’s event will not be the same without him, as he is usually chatting with dancers and attendees, working to get the perfect shot. Steve was not only a great volunteer, but a wonderful friend. His gentle spirit coupled with humor and a positive outlook in the
midst of life’s challenges will always be remembered. He was known for his saying, “enjoy the day and those around you.” Steve was loved by Safe Haven, and the Nashville community as a whole.
Lowry started his photojournalism career as a teenager in Kentucky. He came to Nashville to work for the Nashville Banner, where he spent several years photographing happenings around the city. Lowry then spent time at TNN before becoming a freelance photographer with clients in all types of industries. Prior to the pandemic, he was the in-house photographer for the Ryman Auditorium for 14 years.
Steve photographed hundreds of events and gatherings on Music Row, including No. 1 parties, concerts, celebratory gatherings, benefits and more. Lowry’s photos have graced Nashville Banner, The Tennessean, Billboard, Rolling Stone, MusicRow, American Songwriter and many more publications.
In addition to Safe Haven, Steve was also passionate about supporting Music Health Alliance and Second Harvest Food Bank. He was also active in his service at Woodmont Christian Church. Steve’s contributions to Safe Haven are immeasurable, as he documented Safe Haven’s growth, celebrations and moments that will be cherished in his photos for years to come. He gave us the irreplaceable gift of memories frozen in time. In honor and memory of Steve, may we all remember to enjoy our days and those around us.
