Safeguarding the rights of animals

It is time for the voices of Aotearoa’s animals to be heard loud and clear.

In our previous annual report we highlighted the urgent need to repair New Zealand’s broken animal welfare system. Our efforts centred around the establishment of a new Commissioner for Animals role, aimed at safeguarding the rights and wellbeing of animals across Aotearoa.

Since its inception in 2021, the campaign for a Commissioner for Animals has gained momentum and support, rallying individuals, organisations, and policymakers alike. Last year, SAFE launched a petition calling for a  Commissioner for Animals, attracting over 17,000 signatures. This past year we have gained further momentum, with 19 local and international animal advocacy organisations endorsing our campaign.

Over the past year SAFE has run a targeted national advertising campaign, engaged with members of Parliament, and spoken out in the media, highlighting specific instances of cruelty and explaining the impact a Commissioner for Animals could have for these animals.

We hope you will join us in calling for an independent voice for animals, to ensure that their legal rights are upheld.
